Measurements related to gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence emission were taken from healthy and diseased bean leaves with rust, angular leaf spot, and anthracnose during lesion development for each disease. The experiments were performed at different temperatures of plant incubation, and using two bean cultivars. The main effect of temperature of plant incubation was in disease development. There was no significant difference between cultivars in relation to disease development and in magnitude of physiological alterations when disease severity was the same for each cultivar. These diseases reduced the net photosynthetic rate and increased the dark respiration of infected leaves after the appearance of visible symptoms and the differences between healthy and diseased leaves increased with disease development. The transpiration rate and stomatal conductance were stable during the monocycle of rust, however, these two variables decreased in leaves with angular leaf spot and anthracnose beginning with symptom appearance and continuing until lesion development was complete. Carboxylation resistance was probably the main factor related to reduction of photosynthetic rate of the apparently healthy area of leaves with rust and angular leaf spot. Reduction of the intercellular concentration of CO2, due to higher stomatal resistance, was probably the main factor for leaves with anthracnose. Chlorophyll fluorescence assessments suggested that there was no change in electron transport capacity and generation of ATP and NADPH in apparently healthy areas of diseased leaves, but decreases in chlorophyll fluorescence emission occurred on visibly lesioned areas for all diseases. Minimal fluorescence was remarkably reduced in leaves with angular leaf spot. Maximal fluorescence and optimal quantum yield of photosystem II of leaves were reduced for all three diseases. Bean rust, caused by a biotrophic pathogen, induced less damage to the regulation mechanisms of the physiological processes of the remaining green area of diseased leaves than did bean angular leaf spot or anthracnose, caused by hemibiotrophic pathogens. The magnitude of photosynthesis reduction can be related to the host–pathogen trophic relationships.  相似文献

Variability in leaf gas-exchange traits in thirteen soybean (Glycine max L. Merr) genotypes was assessed in a field experiment conducted at high altitude (1 950 m). Leaf net photosynthetic rate (P N) exhibited a high degree of variability at all the growth stages studied. P N and other gas-exchange parameters exhibited a seasonal pattern that was similar for all the genotypes. P N rate was highest at seed filling stage. P N was positively and significantly associated with aboveground dry matter and seed yield. The area leaf mass (ALM) exhibited a strong positive association with leaf P N, aboveground dry matter, and seed yield. The positive association between ALM, P N, and seed yield suggests that this simple and easy to measure character can be used in breeding programmes as a surrogate for higher photosynthetic efficiency and eventually higher yield.  相似文献

Using bean seedlings, the effects of benzyladenine (BA) on stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration rate (E), and net photosynthetic rate (PN) were examined in order to find out dose and time responses. In bean seedlings, BA appli roots in concentrations of 1, 5, 10, and 20 µM increased gs and PN of leaves already 1 h after application. E was not markedly affected and water use efficiency (WUE) was increased. However, the effects were mostly transient and after 24 h PN only at 1 and 5 µM BA was increased, and other parameters were not affected or even decreased. In sugar beet seedlings, the effects of hydroxybenzyladenosine (HBA) in addition to those of BA on the same parameters were determined. The both cytokinins were applied in 1, 5, 10, and 20 µM concentrations either to roots or sprayed on leaves However, the effects were inconsistent and the positive effect was observed only after 24 h on PN in plants with roots immersed in 5 and 10 µM BA, or 10 µM HBA, and on E in plants sprayed with 5 µM BA or 10 µM HBA. Thus the stimulation of gas exchange by exogenously applied cytokinins is rather exceptional than general.  相似文献

In bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) seedlings well supplied with water, rates of transpiration (E) and CO2 assimilation (P N) of the primary leaves were measured under blue (BR) or red (RR) irradiance of 150 µmol(photon) m–2 s–1. The leaf conductance to H2O vapour transfer (g H2O), as well as the intercellular concentrations of H2O vapour (e i) and of CO2 (C i) were calculated. Under BR, g H2O was significantly greater, but P N was lower, and E similar as compared with corresponding values found under RR. The increase of stomata aperture under BR was evident although C i was higher and e i was lower than under RR. Results agree with the suggestion that BR directly activates guard cell metabolism and in well watered plants determines mainly the stomata aperture.  相似文献

Diurnal and seasonal changes in the leaf water potential (), stomatal conductance (g s), net CO2 assimilation rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), internal CO2 concentration (C i), and intrinsic water use efficiency (P N/g s) were studied in grapevines (Vitis vinifera L. cv. Touriga Nacional) growing in low, moderate, and severe summer stress at Vila Real (VR), Pinhão (PI), and Almendra (AL) experimental sites, respectively. In VR and PI site the limitation to photosynthesis was caused more by stomatal limitations, while in AL mesophyll limitations were also responsible for the summer decline in P N.  相似文献

Gas exchange, photochemical efficiency, and leaf water potential (l) of Salix matsudana (non-indigenous species), S. microstachya and S. gordejevii (indigenous species) were studied in Hunshandak Sandland, China. l of all the three species decreased from 06:00 to 12:00, and increased afterwards. S. matsudana showed higher values of l than others. Net photosynthetic rate (P N) and stomatal conductance (g s) of S. matsudana were the lowest among all, with the maximum P N at 10:00 being 75% of that of S. gordejevii. Compared with the indigenous species, the non-indigenous S. matsudana had also lower transpiration rate (E) and water use efficiency (WUE). The values of Fv/Fm in all the species were lower from 06:00 to 14:00 than those after 14:00, indicating an obvious depression in photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 in both non-indigenous and native species. However, it was much more depressed in S. matsudana, the non-indigenous tree. P N was positively correlated to g s and negatively related to l. The relationship between g s and vapour pressure difference (VPD) was exponential, while negative linear correlation was found between g s and l.  相似文献

Relationships between leaf nitrogen (N) content and leaf gas exchange components of a single cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) leaf subtending the fruit during ontogeny were investigated under field conditions. A 20-d old leaf exhibited the highest physiological activity characterized by net photosynthetic (PN) and transpiration (E) rates, stomatal conductances to CO2 exchange (gsCO2) and water vapor transfer (gsH2O), and nitrogen (N) content. With the advent of leaf senescence, the gas exchange rates declined as exhibited by the 30-, 40-, and 60-d old leaves. Regression analysis indicated close relationships between gsCO2 and PN, and gsH2O and E as the leaves advanced towards senescence. Both PN and gsCO2 were related to N as they declined with leaf age. Thus, the declines in PN were associated with stomatal closure and removal of N during leaf ontogeny.  相似文献

A field study was conducted to evaluate the drought tolerance of three sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] cultivars, Gadambalia, Arous elRimal and Tabat, and quantify the physiological bases for differences in their drought tolerance. Water stress reduced shoot dry mass of Gadambalia, Arous elRimal and Tabat by 43, 46 and 58 %, respectively. The respective reduction in leaf area of the three cultivars was 28, 54 and 63 %. The reduction in net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance and transpiration rate due to water stress was lowest in Gadambalia and highest in Tabat. The leaf water potentials and relative water contents of Gadambalia under wet and dry treatments were similar, while those of Tabat were significantly reduced by water stress. The lowest and highest liquid water flow conductance was displayed by Tabat and Gadambalia, respectively. Drought tolerance in Gadambalia is associated with its smaller leaf area, higher liquid water flow conductance, and ability to maintain high leaf water potential, relative water content, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate and photosynthetic rate under drought stress. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Abstract: Diurnal courses of gas exchange were measured throughout one year in fully expanded current-year leaves in the uppermost canopy (sun leaves, 18 m above ground) and in the lower canopy (shade leaves, 12 m above ground) of Myrica faya Ait., a dominant component of the Canarian laurel forest in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain.
M. faya showed large differences between sun and shade leaves in gas exchange characteristics (about 50 % of maximum carbon assimilation rate (Amax) reduction in shade leaves, but this reduction can be higher on specific days) that were modulated by strong light attenuation and high leaf area index (LAI) of the stand. This species presented low Amax, about 10 μmol m-2 s-1, high maximum transpiration (E, 8 mmol m-2 s-1) and stomatal conductance (gs, 750 mmol m-2 s-1) and very low instantaneous water use efficiency (WUE, mean maximum 1.1 mmol mol-1) and A/gs (mean maximum 23.5 μmol mol-1). M. faya responded to high air vapour pressure deficit (VPD), decreasing its gs but maintaining relatively high values of A and E during the studied period. Stomatal response to VPD showed a higher sensitivity than its congeners, M. cerifera, and Laurus azorica, tree species co-occurring in the Canarian laurel forest. In general, all these gas exchange characteristics lead us to consider this species more similar to subtropical plants of humid regions than to species of the Mediterranean region.  相似文献

Net photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), and stomatal conductance (gs) during water stress and after rehydration were measured in Phaseolus vulgaris, Beta vulgaris, and Zea mays. Immediately before imposition of water stress by cessation of watering, plants were irrigated with water (control), 100 M abscisic acid (ABA), and/or 10 M N6-benzyladenine (BA). In all three species, application of ABA decreased gs, E, and PN already 1 h after application. However, during water stress gs, E, and PN in plants pre-treated with ABA remained higher than in plants pre-treated with water. Positive effects of ABA application were observed also after rehydration. In contrast, the effects of pre-treatment with BA were species-specific. While in bean plants BA application ameliorated negative effect of water stress, only very slight effects were observed in maize, and in sugar beet BA even aggravated the effects of water stress.  相似文献

Forty two-month-old plants of Dalbergia sissoo and D. latifolia were subjected for 56 d to water deficit induced by withholding water. Drought stress caused a significant reduction in plant height, stem diameter, net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), and stomatal conductance (g s) in both species, but the reduction was greater in D. sissoo than in D. latifolia. Water use efficiency (P N/E) was adversely affected due to water stress only in D. latifolia, and intrinsic water use efficiency (P N/g s) was increased in both species. There was a slight effect of water stress on variable to maximum fluorescence (Fv/Fm) (quantum yield of photosystem 2) in both species, but the species did not differ significantly in this attribute.  相似文献

Stress-induced restrictions to carbon balance, growth, and reproduction are the causes of tree-line formation at a global scale. We studied gas exchange and water relations of Polylepis tarapacana in the field, considering the possible effects of water stress limitations imposed on net photosynthetic rate (P N). Daily courses of microclimatic variables, gas exchange, and leaf water potential were measured in both dry-cold and wet-warm seasons at an altitude of 4 300 m. Marked differences in environmental conditions between seasons resulted in differences for the dry-cold and wet-warm seasons in mean leaf water potentials (–1.67 and –1.02 MPa, respectively) and mean leaf conductances (33.5 and 58.9 mmol m–2 s–1, respectively), while differences in mean P N (2.5 and 2.8 mol m–2 s–1, respectively) were not as evident. This may be related to limitations imposed by water deficit and lower photon flux densities during dry and wet seasons, respectively. Hence P. tarapacana has coupled its gas exchange characteristics to the extreme daily and seasonal variations in temperature and water availability of high elevations.  相似文献

Leaf gas exchange and plant water relations of three co-occurring evergreen Mediterranean shrubs species, Quercus ilex L. and Phillyrea latifolia L. (typical evergreen sclerophyllous shrubs) and Cistus incanus L. (a drought semi-deciduous shrub), were investigated in order to evaluate possible differences in their adaptive strategies, in particular with respect to drought stress. C. incanus showed the highest annual rate of net photosynthetic rate (P N) and stomatal conductance (g s) decreasing by 67 and 69 %, respectively, in summer. P. latifolia and Q. ilex showed lower annual maximum P N and g s, although P N was less lowered in summer (40 and 37 %, respectively). P. latifolia reached the lowest midday leaf water potential (1) during the drought period (–3.54±0.36 MPa), 11 % lower than in C. incanus and 19 % lower than in Q. ilex. Leaf relative water content (RWC) showed the same trend as 1. C. incanus showed the lowest RWC values during the drought period (60 %) while they were never below 76 % in P. latifolia and Q. ilex; moreover C. incanus showed the lowest recovery of 1 at sunset. Hence the studied species are well adapted to the prevailing environment in Mediterranean climate areas, but they show different adaptive strategies that may be useful for their co-occurrence in the same habitat. However, Q. ilex and P. latifolia by their water use strategy seem to be less sensitive to drought stress than C. incanus.  相似文献

Leaf internal, or mesophyll, conductance to CO2 (gm ) is a significant and variable limitation of photosynthesis that also affects leaf transpiration efficiency (TE). Genotypic variation in gm and the effect of gm on TE were assessed in six barley genotypes (four Hordeum vulgare and two H. bulbosum). Significant variation in gm was found between genotypes, and was correlated with photosynthetic rate. The genotype with the highest gm also had the highest TE and the lowest carbon isotope discrimination as recorded in leaf tissue (Δp). These results suggest gm has unexplored potential to provide TE improvement within crop breeding programmes.  相似文献

The combined effects of water status, vapour pressure deficit (VPD), and elevated temperature from heading to maturity were studied in barley. Plants growing at high VPD, either under well-watered or water deficit conditions, had higher grain yield and grain filling rate than plants growing at low VPD. By contrast, water stress decreased grain yield and individual grain dry matter at any VPD. Water regime and to a lesser extent VPD affected 13C of plant parts sampled at mid-grain filling and maturity. The differences between treatments were maximal in mature grains, where high VPD increased 13C for both water regimes. However, the total amount of water used by the plant during grain filling did not change as response to a higher VPD whereas transpiration efficiency (TE) decreased. The net photosynthetic rate (P N) of the flag leaves decreased significantly under water stress at both VPD regimes. However, P N of the ears was higher at high VPD than at low VPD, and did not decrease as response to water stress. The higher correlation of grain yield with P N of the ear compared with that of the flag leaf support the role of ear as the main photosynthetic organ during grain filling under water deficit and high VPD. The deleterious effects of combined moderately high temperature and drought on yield were attenuated at high VPD.  相似文献

Gas exchange, water relations, and leaf traits were studied in the tuberous-root producing legumes ahipa (Pachyrhizus ahipa) and yambean (P. erosus) under different environmental conditions. Differences in leaf traits (hairiness, leaf area, areal leaf mass, stomatal density) and paraheliotropism were found between ahipa and yambean. Under sufficient water supply, the increase in air temperature and decrease in air humidity increased stomatal conductance (g s) and net photosynthetic rate (P N) in yambean but reduced them in ahipa. In a drying soil (14 d after irrigation), inter-specific variation in gas exchange was only observed in the early morning, and yambean showed a greater sensitivity to water restriction than ahipa. High g s at low humidity increased P N of P. erosus but resulted in lower water-use efficiency (WUE). However, long-term WUE, estimated by leaf carbon isotope discrimination, showed little variation between species. Daily-irrigated ahipa and yambean grown in the greenhouse did not show significant differences in gas exchange. However, leaf temperature was significantly greater in yambean than in ahipa while a steepper relationship between E and P N and g s was observed in ahipa.  相似文献

We examined differences in net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), water use efficiency (WUE), ratio of substomatal to atmospheric CO2 concentration (C i/C a), cuticle thickness (CT), epidermis cell size (ECS), mesophyll cell size (MCS), vascular bundle size (VBS), tissue density (TD), and coefficient of water loss (k) in Sabina vulgaris as related to sex, shoot form, and leaf form. P N, E, WUE, C i/C a, MCS, VBS, and k varied with sex, whereas CT, ECS, and TD did not. These differences in physiology and anatomy between the female and male plants may be closely related with their reproduction behaviour. P N, E, C i/C a, CT, ECS, MCS, and VBS were significantly smaller in the erect shoots than in the prostrate shoots, WUE was just opposite; TD and k did not vary with shoot form. These changes in physiology with shoot form indicate that erect shoots may be more tolerant of water stress than prostrate shoots. P N, E, C i/C a, TD, and k were significantly greater in the spine leaves than in the scale leaves, whereas WUE, CT, ECS, MCS, and VBS followed the opposite trends. The changes in physiology and anatomy with leaf form suggest that scale leaves have higher drought-resistant and water-holding capacities than spine leaves. Measurements of field gas exchange showed that three-year-old seedlings had lower drought-resistance and higher water loss than five-year-old seedlings, which provides some evidence that seedling survival decreases with decreasing plant age.  相似文献

The symbiotic association of endophyte fungus, Neotyphodium lolii, and ryegrass improves the ryegrass resistance to drought. This is shown by a 30 % increase in the number of suckers in infected plants (E+), compared to plants lacking endophyte (E−), and by a higher water potential in the E+ than E− plants. The E+ plants have higher stomatal conductance (g s), transpiration rate, net photosynthetic rate (P N), and photorespiratory electron transport rate than the E− plants. The maximal photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) and the actual photochemical efficiency (ΦPS2) are not affected by the endophyte fungus. The increase in P N of the E+ plants subjected to water stress was independent from internal CO2 concentration. An increased P N was observed in E+ plants also in optimal water supply. Hence the drought resistance of E+ plants results in increased g s, P N, and photorespiratory electron transport rate. The net photosynthetic rate (P N), intercellular CO2 concentration (C i), stomatal conductance (g s), transpiration rate (E), water use efficiency (WUE), and leaf biomass production of four American flue-cured tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) cultivars K 326, K 358, and Speight G 28 were compared with three local Indian cultivars 16/103, Special FCV, and PCT-7, during 1994 and 1995 crop seasons under irrigated and rainfed production systems (Northern light soils, NLS, and Karnataka light soils, KLS) in India. By comparison, the American tobacco cv. K 326 showed the highest P N and g s. A positive correlation was found between P N and biomass production in all the varieties tested (r = 0.55 in NLS and 0.73 in KLS). The American cultivars were superior than the local cultivars in their biomass production and P N under Indian farming conditions.  相似文献

Biomass, leaf water potential (l), net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (g s), leaf to air temperature difference (T diff), and instantaneous water use efficiency (WUE) were measured in the seedlings of Dalbergia sissoo Roxb. grown under irrigation of 20 (W1), 14 (W2), 10 (W3), and 8 (W4) mm. Treatments were maintained by re-irrigation when water content of the soil reached 7.4% in W1, 5.6% in W2, 4.3% in W3, and 3.2% in W4. Seedlings in a control (W5) were left without irrigation after maintaining the soil field capacity (10.7%). Seedlings of W1 had highest biomass that was one tenth in W5. Biomass allocation was highest in leaf in W2 and in root in W4 and W5 treatments. Difference between predawn leaf water potential (Pd) and midday (mid) increased with soil water stress and with vapour pressure deficit (VPD) in April and May slowing down the recovery in plant leaf water status after transpiration loss. P N, E, and g s declined and T diff increased from W1 to W5. Their values were highly significant in April and May for the severely stressed seedlings of W4 and W5. P N increased from 08:00 to 10:00 and E increased until 13:00 within the day for most of the seedlings whereas g s decreased throughout the day from 08:00 to 17:00. P N and E were highest in March but their values were low in January, February, April, and May. Large variations in physiological variables to air temperature, photosynthetically active radiation, and vapour pressure deficit (VPD) indicated greater sensitivity of the species to environmental factors. WUE increased from W1 to W2 but decreased drastically at high water stress particularly during hot summer showing a kind of adaptation in D. sissoo to water stress. However, low biomass and reduced physiological functions at <50% of soil field capacity suggest that this species does not produce significant biomass at severe soil water stress or drought of a prolonged period.  相似文献
