Eleven light-breed pregnant mares (335 to 347 d gestaton) were used to evaluate the use of prostaglandin E2 as a cervical ripening agent prior to induction of parturition during the months of April and May. Six hours prior to induction, each mare's cervix was examined per vagina for softness and dilation. Each mare was then assigned to 1 of 2 treatment groups: Group PGE mares (n = 7) received 2.0 to 2.5 mg prostaglandin E2 deposited intracervically; Group SAL mares (n = 4) received 0.5 mL of sterile NaCl deposited intracervically. Six hours later, the mares were readied for parturition by wrapping the tail, scrubbing and rinsing the perineum and udder, and examining the cervix as previously described. Each mare was then administered 15 U, i.v. oxytocin at 15-min intervals until the chorioallantois ruptured. Intervals from initial oxytocin injection until rupture of the chorioallantois, from initial oxytocin injection until delivery of the foal, from delivery of the foal until the foal stood unassisted, and from delivery of the foal until the foal suckled were recorded. Mean cervical dilation immediately prior to induction of parturition tended to be greater in Group PGE mares (3.9 +/- 1.7 cm) than in Group SAL mares (1.9 +/- 1.9 cm; P = 0.10). Mean change in cervical dilation over the 6-h period prior to induction (3.4 +/- 1.9 cm vs 1.5 +/- 2.1 cm), mean number of injections of oxytocin required until the chorioallantois ruptured (1.9 +/- 0.7 vs 2.5 +/- 1.0), and mean intervals from initial injection of oxytocin to rupture of the chorioallantois (20 +/- 10 min vs 28 +/- 19 min) and delivery of the foal (28 +/- 7 min vs 34 +/- 22 min) were not different between Group PGE and SAL mares, respectively (P > 0.10). The proportion of foals that stood within 1 h of birth also did not differ between Group PGE foals (6/7; 86%) and Group SAL foals (3/4; 75%; Chi-square = 0.17; P > 0.10). The proportion of foals that nursed within 2 h of birth was higher in Group PGE foals (6/7; 86%) than in Group SAL foals (1/4; 25%; Chi-square = 4.02; P < 0.05). Premature separation requiring manual rupture of the chorioallantois at the vulvar labia occurred in 1 Group PGE mare (cervical dilation of 1.5 cm at time of induction) and 1 Group SAL mare (cervix closed and firm at time of induction). Foals born from the 2 mares with premature placental separation had the longest intervals from initial oxytocin injection to delivery, delivery to ability to stand unassisted, and delivery to suckling within their respective treatment groups. In summary, it appears that cervical ripening prior to induction of parturition favors shorter deliveries and foal vigor. Intracervical administration of prostaglandin E2 may prove useful for ripening the cervix of the mare prior to induction of parturition. Further studies are indicated to determine optimal dosage and method of administration of prostaglandin E2.  相似文献

The objective was to determine if long-term treatment with trimethoprim sulfamethoxazole (antimicrobial), pentoxifylline (anti-inflammatory/anti-cytokine) and altrenogest (synthetic progestin), would improve pregnancy outcome in mares with experimentally induced placentitis. Seventeen normal, pregnant pony mares were enrolled in the study at 280-295 d of pregnancy. Placentitis was induced in all mares by intra-cervical inoculation of Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus (107 CFU). Five mares served as infected, untreated control animals (Group UNTREAT). Twelve mares (Group TREAT) were infected and given trimethoprim sulfamethoxazole (30 mg/kg, PO, q 12h), pentoxifylline (8.5 mg/kg, PO, q 12h) and altrenogest (0.088 mg/kg, PO, q 24h) from the onset of clinical signs to delivery of a live foal or abortion. Blood samples were cultured from all foals at delivery and fetal stomach and thoracic contents were obtained for culture from dead fetuses. More mares in Group TREAT delivered viable foals (10/12; 83%; P < 0.05) than mares in Group UNTREAT (0/5; 0%). Ten of 12 foals (83%) in Group TREAT had negative blood cultures at birth. All foals in Group UNTREAT (5/5; 100%) had positive cultures from one or more samples (blood, stomach contents, and thoracic fluid). Bacteria were recovered from uterine culture samples in both groups. Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus was the predominant organism recovered from fetal/foal or mare culture samples. The authors inferred that administration of trimethoprim sulfamethoxazole, pentoxifylline and altrenogest may improve the viability of foals from mares with experimentally induced placentitis.  相似文献

A tendency for deslorelin implants to suppress subsequent follicular growth and delay return to estrus following induced ovulation has been documented in nonlactating mares. To investigate this phenomenon in lactating mares, 22 broodmares in southeast Texas were administered either deslorelin or hCG to induce ovulation in the first postpartum estrus during February and March 2001. Mares were teased daily and examined twice weekly (Tuesdays and Thursdays) by transrectal ultrasonography. When a follicle >35 mm diameter was detected on Tuesday, mares were treated with either 2,500 U hCG administered intravenously or with one implant (2.1 mg) deslorelin administered subcutaneously. Mares were bred every other day until ovulation was detected or until they ceased behavioral estrus, and were examined 16 days after treatment to detect pregnancy. Follicular measurements were recorded for all mares during each examination, and interestrous intervals were recorded for mares not becoming pregnant. Treatment of mares with either hCG or deslorelin resulted in similar ovulatory responses and pregnancy rates. Deslorelin-treated mares had fewer ovarian follicles >20 mm in diameter 16 days after treatment than hCG-treated mares (P < 0.01). Interestrous intervals for mares failing to become pregnant on foal heat breeding were prolonged in deslorelin-treated compared to hCG-treated mares (P < 0.01). Date of treatment was negatively correlated with length of the interestrous interval in deslorelin-treated mares (P < 0.01), but was not correlated with length of interestrous interval in hCG-treated mares (P > 0.10). All mares failing to become pregnant from foal heat breedings became pregnant from later breedings, but the parturition to conception interval was prolonged in deslorelin-treated compared to hCG-treated mares that did not become pregnant on foal heat (P < 0.01).  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to compare serum calcium and magnesium concentrations in mares with or without a retained placenta (RP) and to evaluate treatment of mares with RP with oxytocin versus oxytocin combined with Ca-Mg-borogluconate solution. Blood samples were obtained within 12 h of foaling from Friesian mares with and without an RP (n = 90 and 65, respectively). Serum Ca and Mg concentrations were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. In total, we treated 112 cases of RP in 101 Friesian mares by infusion of either oxytocin dissolved in saline solution or oxytocin dissolved in Ca-Mg-borogluconate solution. We defined RP as the failure to expel all or a part of the fetal membranes up to 3 h after delivery of the foal. We defined a positive response to the treatment as the passage of the entire placenta within 2 h after the infusion. Mares with RP had significantly lower serum calcium levels within 12 h of foaling than mares without RP. Serum magnesium levels showed no difference. Sixty-four percent of the mares treated with oxytocin in Ca-Mg-borogluconate solution responded positively to the treatment, compared to 44% of the mares treated with oxytocin in saline solution (P < 0.05).  相似文献

Plasma FSH and LH response to a synthetic GnRH analog was measured in adult ovariectomized pony mares (OVX) and in pony foals (<70 days of age) during late spring (May-June). FSH and LH responded in a similar fashion (200% increase) in the OVX mare, which is different from other reports for intact mares. There was a greater mean response to a comparable dose of GnRH in the prepubertal foal for both FSH (500%) and LH (900%) than in the OVX mare. There was a positive correlation between age and the maximum FSH response to GnRH in male and female foals. The LH response was positively correlated with age in male foals, but not in females. The response to GnRH in the prepubertal foals was consistent with the previously observed patterns of gonadotropin secretion during this age period.  相似文献

During the 1976 breeding season 68 mares (56 Thoroughbred and 12 Quarter Horse) were allotted to 4 treatment groups. On day 7, 8 or 9 post-ovulation or day 6, 7 or 8 after foal heat each of 28 mares was injected intramuscularly with 250 μg of the prostaglandin analogue ICI-81,008 (generic name fluprostenol). In the second group, 32 mares were bred at foal heat. Group 3 consisted of 9 mares, which were passed at foal heat and bred at the second postpartum estrus. In group four, 12 of the mares which had failed to conceive at foal heat were bred at the second estrus. Twenty-four prostaglandin treated mares returned to estrus 4.2±.4 days post-injection. The interestrual interval was shorter (P<.05) for prostaglandin treated mares (11.4±.6 days) than for previously mated second heat control mares (19.2±2.3). Also, the interval between parturition and second estrus was decreased (P<.05) in treated mares (24.5±.8 days) compared to group three (32.8±2.5 days). Duration of the second postpartum estrus was similar for both treated and control mares. Plasma progesterone levels in prostaglandin treated mares as determined by RIA were 7.5±.5 and 6.9±.5 ng/ml before treatment and at l hour post-injection, then dropped precipitously to near undetectable levels at 48 hours after injection. Pregnancy rate at 45 days was significantly higher (P<.05) in prostaglandin treated mares (78%) as compared to foal heat mares (48%) and mares which were passed at foal heat and bred at the second postpartum estrus (44%).  相似文献

Because the incidence of retained placenta in Friesian mares is estimated to be high, and no reports have been published on the reproductive performance of Friesian mares after retained placenta, we studied postpartum reproductive performance in Friesian brood mares with (n = 54) and without (n = 50) retained placenta. We defined a retained placenta as the failure to expel all fetal membranes within 3 h after the delivery of a foal. We subdivided the group of mares with retained placenta into mares in which the placenta had been removed manually (n = 30) and mares in which it had not (n = 24). Within each group, we compared reproductive performance after breeding in the foal heat and breeding in a subsequent heat. We also recorded the age of the mares, number of mares treated with antibiotics after insemination, and number of mares treated with prostaglandins. The interval between delivery and conception, efficacy rate (number of served cycles divided by the number of mares that had a positive pregnancy diagnosis), seasonal pregnancy rate, pregnancy rate after first insemination, pregnancy loss rate, and foaling rate did not differ between mares with and without retained placenta or between mares with and without manual removal of the retained placenta. Within each group, the pregnancy rate after first insemination did not differ between breeding for the first time in the foal heat and breeding for the first time in a subsequent heat. We concluded that reproductive performance did not differ between (1) Friesian mares with and without retained placenta and (2) Friesian mares with and without manual removal of the placenta. With regard to reproductive performance, retained placenta and manual removal of the placenta are not valid reasons to avoid foal heat breeding in Friesian mares.  相似文献

A female, horse-like foal was apparently born to a mare mule from mating to a Shetland stallion. The presence of three pregnant Shetland mares in the same pasture, however, raised some questions about parentage, even though all three mares apparently gave birth to single foals within 6 weeks after the birth of the propositus. The transferrin system indicated that the foal was not born to the mare mule but was the offspring of one of the Shetland mares. Apparently one Shetland mare gave birth to twins 3 to 6 weeks apart, and the mare mule came into lactation spontaneously and adopted the first twin. The offspring was determined to be a horse by appearance, karyotype, blood type, and voice.  相似文献

Breeding of mares at the foal heat is desirable, but the low pregnancy rate and the not infrequent occurrence of subsequent anestrus are a deterrent. A PGF2a analogue, Synchrocept? (prostalene), as a single 2 mg subcutaneous injection was used to induce ovulation, either during the corpus luteum phase subsequent to a foal heat (test group 1) or at a fixed interval of 20 days from parturition (test group 2) in mares that also had a foal heat. Mares with no signs of a foal heat were treated 20 days postpartum (test group 3). A total of 80, mostly Thoroughbred, mares were treated in more than 15 breeding centers in Northern Germany between mid-January and mid-May 1975. At the same locations and over the same time periods, 60 control mares (control group 1) were bred at the foal heat and 40 additional control mares (control group 2) were bred later than 25 days postpartum. In groups 1 and 2, treatment induced estrus in 95% of the mares and in group 3 estrus was induced in 68% of the mares. Of these animals, 92% were bred and 81% conceived on the average 28 days after parturition. The number of services per conception in mares treated was 25% lower (2.5) than in controls (3.2). Synchrocept acted as a luteolysin, but seems also to have induced heat and estrus in animals with plasma progesterone levels below 1 ng/ml, as has been reported previously. Neither mares nor foals showed detectable clinical signs of drug intolerance.  相似文献

The objective was to evaluate the efficacy of domperidone in the prevention of reproductive complications of fescue toxicosis in periparturient mares. Pregnant mares at ≤310 days of gestation were fed ≥200 μg ergovaline per kg diet daily in endophyte-infected fescue hay and seed, starting ≥30 days before their expected foaling date (EFD: 340 days after breeding). Thirty-five mares were randomized to a treatment group to receive either domperidone gel (n = 20, 1.1 mg/kg, PO, once daily) or placebo (n = 15). Treatment was initiated 10 to 15 days before the EFD and continued for 5 days after foaling. “Treatment success” was defined as foaling within 14 days of the EFD, adequate mammary development on the day of foaling, and adequate lactation for 5 days postpartum. Twenty-seven mares were included in the effectiveness analysis. More mares in the domperidone group (12/13, P < 0.0001) were treatment successes than in the control group (1/14). Gestation length was shorter (P = 0.0011), and lactation at foaling (P = 0.0011) was better for the domperidone-group mares. Foals from two control mares were born dead and four others died or were euthanized within a few days after birth, compared with one foal death (an autolyzed twin) from a domperidone-treated mare. Plasma IgG concentrations were evaluated in 24 foals. Failure of passive transfer of immunoglobulins (IgG <800 mg/dL) occurred in 13/16 (81%) foals of domperidone-group mares and 7/8 (88%) foals of control mares. In conclusion, the reproductive complications of fescue toxicosis in periparturient mares induced by a fescue seed/hay model were prevented by treatment with domperidone.  相似文献

Uterine secretion was collected from five normal mares during estrus by the use of a tampon. In subsequent estrus cycles, mares were inseminated with 1 x 10(9) spermatozoa from a stallion of known fertility, and uterine secretion was collected randomly at 6, 12, and 24 hours after insemination. All mares had negative endometrial cytology before insemination. At the time of uterine secretion sampling, semen was collected from two stallions and extended with Kenney's extender to a concentration of 50 x 10(6) spermatozoa/mL. Extended semen was diluted 2:1 with uterine secretion; semen extender; and centrifuged uterine secretion (noncellular). Samples were kept at room temperature and sperm motion characteristics (corrected motility (CMOT), progressively motile spermatozoa (PMS), and mean path velocity (MPV) were evaluated using a computer-assisted semen analyzer every 40 minutes for a total of 4 hours. Sperm motion characteristics of spermatozoa were significantly better when incubated in semen extender compared to uterine secretion (P < 0.05). The CMOT and PMS were significantly better in uterine secretion collected before, compared to after AI with the lowest values observed in samples collected at 12 hours after breeding (P < 0.05). Sperm motion characteristics of spermatozoa incubated in centrifuged uterine secretion was only slightly suppressed compared to spermatozoa incubated in semen extender, suggesting that the altered motion characteristics were mostly due to the presence of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) in the samples. It was concluded from this study that spermatozoa can survive in inflamed uterine secretion, but that sperm motion characteristics in vitro are altered.  相似文献

Small samples of mammary secretion were taken for analysis from Thoroughbred mares during the last 3 weeks of pregnancy up to the time of foaling. The concentrations of sodium and chloride decreased while those of lactose, potassium, citrate, phosphate, calcium, magnesium and protein increased. The time-course of these changes showed marked variation between animals. The concentration of whey proteins began to increase about 10 days before parturition. The appearance of the secretion and the size of the mammary glands increased in the last few days of pregnancy. It is suggested that the concentration of calcium in mammary secretion could provide the basis of a test for impending parturition in this species.  相似文献

Over a 2-yr study period, we investigated possible endogenous transplacental transmission of Neospora hughesi in 74 mare and foal pairs following the diagnosis of neuronal neosporosis in a weanling foal. Presuckle and postsuckle serum of each foal, serum and colostrum of each periparturient mare, and serum of each mare and foal pair, collected at 3-mo intervals thereafter, were tested for N. hughesi using an indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT). Furthermore, whole blood and colostrum samples and placentae were tested for the presence of N. hughesi by real-time PCR. The mares' seroprevalence at foaling based on IFAT (titer ≥ 160) was 52 and 6% in 2006 and 2007, respectively. Colostral antibodies against N. hughesi were detected in 96 and 11% of the mares in the 2-yr study. With the exception of 3 foals, all remaining foals were born seronegative to N. hughesi. Passive transfer of colostral antibodies to N. hughesi was documented in 15 foals. Three foals born from 2 different mares had presuckle antibodies at a titer ranging from 2,560 to 20,480. All 3 foals were born healthy. Two foals were born to the same dam that also gave birth to the weanling diagnosed with neuronal neosporosis in 2005. The third foal was born to a second mare with no previous foaling history at the farm. Seroconversion was documented in 10 foals and 9 mares over the 2-yr study. All blood and colostrum samples tested PCR negative for N. hughesi. Only 1 placenta collected in 2007 from the mare with the 2 congenitally infected foals tested PCR positive for N. hughesi. In conclusion, N. hughesi persisted in this population via endogenous transplacental infection.  相似文献

Equine relaxin has been previously determined in a small number of pregnant Thoroughbred mares. To better define the normal pregnancy pattern of relaxin, the current study reports on a much larger number of mares. It also was designed to determine if all equids have the same gestational pattern of relaxin secretion. Plasma samples were collected weekly in 24 Standardbred mares, every 7-10 days in 10 pony mares, and daily in late pregnancy from 16 burros. Standardbreds had higher concentrations of relaxin than that reported for Thoroughbreds during most of gestation and did not exhibit the midpregnancy nadir in relaxin concentrations observed in Thoroughbreds. Relaxin concentrations in Standardbreds showed a small but steady decline from Day 150 until delivery. Pony mares had lower relaxin concentrations throughout pregnancy than other mares and had continuously increasing concentrations during gestation. Burros had relaxin concentrations intermediate to ponies and other mares in late gestation. Burros induced to foal with oxytocin showed a sharp increase in relaxin concentrations. No effect of the sex of the offspring was observed in relaxin profiles in Standardbred mares. Each of three Standardbreds with abnormal termination of pregnancy exhibited abnormally low relaxin concentrations at some point in the gestation prior to termination of the pregnancy. Thus, relaxin may be an indicator of placental functioning and used to assess at-risk pregnancies in mares.  相似文献

Thirty-four mares were inseminated with frozen semen from one stallion during 2 oestrous cycles, every 48 h until ovulation took place and within 12 h after ovulation. Semen was frozen using the Colorado method. The insemination dose was from 200 to 400×106 progressively motile spermatozoa. Ovaries were examined every 12 h to determine time of ovulation. Examination for pregnancy was carried out using ultrasonography, 15 days after ovulation. Thirty-five per cent of mares inseminated < 24 h and 23% of mares inseminated between 24 - 48 h before ovulation were pregnant (p = 0.388). The pregnancy rate in all mares inseminated before ovulation was 30%. In the mares inseminated within 12 h of ovulation, it was 18% (p = 0.253). Younger mares (aged 4-10 yr) had a higher pregnancy rate (59%) than older mares (aged 11-15 yr) (23%), but the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.057).  相似文献

In stud management, broodmares are commonly fed concentrates in late pregnancy. This practice, however, was shown to correlate with an increased incidence of osteochondrosis in foals, which may be related to insulin sensitivity. We hypothesized that supplementation of the mare with barley in the last trimester of pregnancy alters the pre-weaning foal growth, glucose metabolism and osteoarticular status. Here, pregnant multiparous saddlebred mares were fed forage only (group F, n=13) or both forage and cracked barley (group B, n=12) from the 7th month of pregnancy until term, as calculated to cover nutritional needs of broodmares. Diets were given in two daily meals. All mares and foals returned to pasture after parturition. Post-natal growth, glucose metabolism and osteoarticular status were investigated in pre-weaning foals. B mares maintained an optimal body condition score (>3.5), whereas that of F mares decreased and remained low (<2.5) up to 3 months of lactation, with a significantly lower bodyweight (-7%) than B mares throughout the last 2 months of pregnancy. B mares had increased plasma glucose and insulin after the first meal and after the second meal to a lesser extent, which was not observed in F mares. B mares also had increased insulin secretion during an intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT). Plasma NEFA and leptin were only temporarily affected by diet in mares during pregnancy or in early lactation. Neonatal B foals had increased serum osteocalcin and slightly increased glucose increments and clearance after glucose injection, but these effects had vanished at weaning. Body measurements, plasma IGF-1, T4, T3, NEFA and leptin concentrations, insulin secretion during IVGTT, as well as glucose metabolism rate during euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamps after weaning, did not differ between groups. Radiographic examination of joints indicated increased osteochondrosis relative risk in B foals, but this was not significant. These data demonstrate that B or F maternal nutrition has very few effects on foal growth, endocrinology and glucose homeostasis until weaning, but may induce cartilage lesions.  相似文献

At a thoroughbred equine breeding farm near Hissar (Haryana), three mares aborted in their seventh month of pregnancy. The vaginal swabs of all aborted mares, and stomach contents, heart blood, liver, spleen and placenta of aborted fetuses yielded pure culture of Aeromonas hydrophila. In addition, A. hydrophila was also isolated from the vaginal swabs of three repeat breeding mares and faecal sample of a diarrheic foal. The source of infection was possibly water supply as all the water samples collected from taps, mother tank and storage tank were found to be positive for A. hydrophila. The antibiogram of all the isolates was similar showing resistance to ampicillin, carbenicillin, gentamicin, kanamycin and amikacin but sensitive to chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, cefuroxime, ceftriaxone, cotrimoxazole, cotrimazine, nitrofurantoin, streptomycin and tetracycline. All the 20 sera samples collected from three aborted and three repeat breeding, and eight in-contact mares, a diarrheic foal, three cows and two male buffaloes maintained at the same farm contained antibodies against A. hydrophila with titres ranging from 80 to 640. The water supply was instantly chlorinated using 0.05% sodium hypochlorite for three consecutive days and all the culturally positive mares were treated with intravaginal administration of 1 g ciprofloxacin, while the foal was given nitrofurantoin for three days. After one month, A. hydrophila could not be isolated either from mares or from their environment and antibody titre in all the seropositive animals showed a declining trend. Later, all the aborted and repeat breeding mares were confirmed to be pregnant. Thus, the present study indicated that water-borne A. hydrophila might be associated with equine abortions and infertility, and diarrhea in newborn foals.  相似文献

The effects of oxytocin and two prostaglandin (PG) F(2)alpha analogues, prostalene and alfaprostol, on uterine pressure in the mare were measured using balloon-tipped catheters connected to pressure transducers. The PGF(2)alpha analogues caused increased uterine pressure beginning 7 to 15 min postinjection and persisting for the duration of each 60 min recording session. Forty postpartum mares of light-horse breed were used to evaluate the effects of prostalene on postpartum pregnancy rate. Eighteen mares were injected by aseptic technique subcutaneously with 1 mg prostalene twice daily, beginning on the day of foaling (Day 0) and continuing for 10 consecutive days (Day 10) or until the mare was first bred at foal heat. Twenty-two postpartum mares were injected with 1.0 ml sterile saline by the same technique as the controls. Of treated mares, 76.9% were diagnosed pregnant after breeding versus 44.4% of the control mares (P = 0.07). Of treated mares, 66.7% bred at their second postpartum estrus became pregnant versus 28.6% of control mares (P = 0.03). Prostalene, given at 1 mg twice daily for 10 d postpartum, produced an increased pregnancy rate after both foal heat and second postpartum estrus breedings in the mare.  相似文献

Lactation is the most energy demanding part of parental care in mammals, so parent-offspring conflict arises over milk provided by the mother. In some species females commonly become pregnant shortly after parturition of previous young. This further intensifies mother-offspring conflict due to concurrent pregnancy and lactation. In equids it has been well established that pregnant females wean their foals earlier than non-pregnant ones. Intensified mother-offspring conflict was presumed to associate with pregnancy also during the period of intensive lactation, i.e., before the weaning process starts. We investigated the effect of pregnancy on suckling behaviour characteristics as indicators of mother-offspring conflict in domestic horses. Contrary to expectation, here we provide evidence of a decreased mother-offspring conflict related to pregnancy in lactating females during first two trimesters of pregnancy. Pregnant mares provided longer suckling bouts and did not reject or terminate suckling of their foals more often than non-pregnant mares. Our results suggest that pregnant mares cope with parallel investment into a nursed foal and a foetus through enhancing nursing behaviour in early stages of pregnancy before the initially low requirements of the foetus increase. They compensate their suckling foal with the perspective of its early weaning due to ongoing pregnancy.  相似文献

Despite a large body of safety data, concern exists that porcine zonae pellucidae (PZP) immunocontraception--used to manage wild horse populations--may cause out-of-season births with resulting foal mortality. Our study at Assateague, Maryland indicated the effects of immunocontraception on season of birth and foal survival between 1990 and 2002 on wild horses from Assateague Island. Among 91 mares never treated, 69 (75.8%) of foals were born in April, May, and June (in season). Among 77 treated mares, 50 (64.9%) were born in season. Of 29 mares foaling within 1 year after treatment (contraceptive failures), 20 (68.9%) were born in season. Of 48 mares treated for greater than 2 years then withdrawn from treatment, 30 (62.5%) of 48 foals were born in season. There were no significant differences (p <.05) between either treatment group or untreated mares. Survival did not differ significantly among foals born in or out of season or among foals born to treated or untreated mares. Data indicate a lack of effect of PZP contraception on season of birth or foal survival on barrier island habitats.  相似文献
