Summary Some extensions of the theory of adapting coincidence scaling are presented in the context of neural theory and modelling.Previously the theory of adapting coincidence scaling has been successfully applied to quite a number of specific problems mainly drawn from psychophysical theories of vision: van de Grind et al. (1970a, b); Koenderink et al. (1970a, b). Here emphasis is on neurophysiological problems and after a brief discussion of the coding and component problems of neural network modelling and a survey of basic coincidence scaling mechanisms a paradigm for neural encoding is treated in some detail. This paradigm (Fig. 6A) is similar to the neuromimes developed and studied by Harmon (1959, 1961) and Küpfmüller and Jenik (1961) for deterministic input signals. On the basis of the introductory discussion of the coding problem it is assumed that the neural code in the peripheral part of the nervous system that we choose as our hunting ground, viz. the retina, is an average event rate code with a Poisson point process as a carrier. Thus the paradigm for neural encoding is studied for such a stochastic input point process. It is then among other things shown that such a simple encoder can generate a wide variety of multimodal interval distributions for certain choices of its parameters. Next we turn to a classic coincidence model of vision and give extremely accurate simulation results to substitute for the lacking analytic solution of the underlying K-fold coincidence problem.A shortcoming of this model is analysed in terms of elementary neural operations and it is shown that the problem of specifying a generalized version of the model ties in with the problem of developing models to explain the quantal signals (bumps) observed on the generator potential during intracellular recordings from the eccentric cell of Limulus. A cybernetic principle for bump size adaptation is formulated on the basis of the apparent and possibly significant similarity of this adaptation process with the event rate reduction principle embodied in the so called V R-machine (van de Grind et al., 1970a) which is one of our set of adapting coincidence scalers.  相似文献

Various species of bruchid beetles including Callosobruchus chinensis, C. maculatus and C. analis cause postharvest damage of azuki bean seeds, an important East Asian grain legume. The -amylase in the midguts of these insects is inhibited by the -amylase inhibitor (AI) present in common bean seeds. Transformation of azuki bean with the AI gene driven by the promoter of phytohemagglutinin results in high levels of AI in the seeds and the complete block of bruchid development on the seeds. Zabrotes subfasciatus, a South and Central American bruchid that is a storage pest of common bean, develops normally on the transgenic azuki bean.  相似文献

Summary Two double heterozygous 0/0 thalassemic sibs of Mexican descent were studied. The father had a 0/0 genotype, while the mother, one sib and several maternal relatives were 0/0 heterozygotes. Parental consanguinity and an apparently low frequency of thalassemia among Mexicans suggested a possible common origin of both 0 and 0 genes. A hypothesis to explain such a possibility is proposed on the basis of a partial mispairing between 0 and genes followed by a crossing-over which would results in a 0 recombinant gene. This hypothesis could also be extended to explain the 22 gluala, 22 alaglu and 116 arghis Hb variants as recombinants from double crossing-over between and mispaired genes for which the name interstitial-Lepore is proposed.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Die vielfach als Stipeln angesprochenen basalen Blattanhänge einiger Taxa der GesneriaceengattungRhytidophyllum Mart. können nicht als solche gelten, da ihnen wesentliche Merkmale echter Stipeln fehlen, insbesondere konstante Ausbildung bzw. Auftreten in der Blattfolge, praekursive Anlegung und proleptische Entwicklung. Gleichwohl sind sie aber als Bildungen des Blattgrundes zu betrachten und daher als vaginale Öhrchen im Sinne vonWeberling zu bezeichnen. Die bei manchen Taxa auftretenden sitzenden Laubblätter mit verbreiterter, teilweise stengelumfassender Blattbasis werden durch laubige Verbindung von Blattspreite und Öhrchen erklärt.Infolge Fehlens echter Stipeln bildet somitRhytidophyllum keine Ausnahme hinsichtlich der Blattgestaltung unter den Tubifloren.

Summary The foliar appendages at the base of the short petiole in some taxa ofRhytidophyllum are often called stipules. But this term is not applicable, because these appendages lack important characteristics of true stipules, f. i. constancy in form and appearence during leaf succession, early ontogenetic origin and prolepsis. Nevertheless they are effigurations of the leaf base (Unterblatt) and have therefore to be regarded as vaginal auricules in the sense ofWeberling. The sessile and partially sheating leaves in someRhytidophyllum taxa result from foliar connections between lamina and auricules.Because of the absence of true stipulesRhytidophyllum fits well into the general leaf morphology of Tubiflorae.

Summary 1H, 13C and 15N NMR assignments of the backbone atoms of subtilisin 309, secreted by Bacillus lentus, have been made using heteronuclear 3D NMR techniques. With 269 amino acids, this protein is one of the largest proteins to be sequentially assigned by NMR methods to date. Because of the size of the protein, some useful 3D correlation experiments were too insensitive to be used in the procedure. The HNCO, HN(CO)CA, HNCA and HCACO experiments are robust enough to provide most of the expected correlations for a protein of this size. It was necessary to use several experiments to unambiguously determine a majority of the -protons. Combined use of HCACO, HN(COCA)HA, HN(CA)HA, 15N TOCSY-HMQC and 15N NOESY-HMQC experiments provided the H chemical shifts. Correlations for glycine protons were absent from most of the spectra. A combination of automated and interactive steps was used in the process, similar to that outlined by Ikura et al. [(1990) J. Am. Chem. Soc., 112, 9020–9022] in the seminal paper on heteronuclear backbone assignment. A major impediment to the linking process was the amount of overlap in the C and H frequencies. Ambiguities resulting from this redundancy were solved primarily by assignment of amino acid type, using C chemical shifts and TOCSY ladders. Ninety-four percent of the backbone resonances are reported for this subtilisin. The secondary structure was analyzed using 3D 15N NOESY-HMQC data and C secondary chemical shifts. Comparison with the X-ray structure [Betzel et al. (1992) J. Mol. Summary Four types of chromosomes with a deletion between the human embryonic and globin genes were identified among 2.8% of 321 Black Americans from Georgia. Two deletions of approximately 11 kb which differed by about 300 bp occurred on chromosomes with or without a polymorphic Xba I site 5 to the globin gene [(X+) or (X-)]. The deletions are identifiable in Xba I digests of genomic DNA using an or a globin gene probe which yield fragments of 23 kb from (X+)–* chromosomes or 27 kb from (X)–* chromosomes. Digestion with other enzymes and probing with both and probes gave fragments typical of the two globin gene deletions previously identified in Polynesians. Among Black Americans, these globin gene deletions have been found in combination with globin gene deletions in trans but not in cis. Homozygotes have not been found. Hematologic data on carriers of the globin gene deletions in association with Hb AS, SS, and SC suggest that these deletions have no effect on the function of the adult globin genes.  相似文献

Résumé L'autoradiographie révèle, au niveau du pied, une incorporation massive et sélective de la 3H-Proline dans la glande blanche de Mytilus edulis. Cette étude a permis de suivre le processus qui mène de la synthèse de la sécrétion dans la partie basale des cellules jusqu'a son émission dans le sillon pédieux où elle participe à la formation du filament. La collagénase détruit la presque totalité du marquage, attestant ainsi la nature collagénique du produit sécrété. Les autres glandes pédieuses ainsi que la glande du byssus proprement dite, située à la base du pied, montrent une incorporation très faible, sans commune mesure avec celle de la glande blanche. Ceci démontre de façon définitive que le collagène présent dans le filament prend naissance dans cette glande et justifie la dénomination de glande du collagène. Des contrôles réalisés dans différentes régions (bords du manteau, manteau, branchies) montrent que l'injection du précurseur dans le bord palléal constitue une méthode satisfaisante pour marquer de façon relativement rapide et différentielle le collagène de la glande.
The collagen of the byssus in Mytilus edulis L.II. Autoradiographic study on the incorporation of 3H-Proline
Summary Autoradiographic studies reveal a strong specific incorporation of 3H-Proline in the white gland in the foot of Mytilus edulis. The author could trace the radioactive secretory product from its synthesis in the basal part of the cells down to its outflow into the pedial groove where it takes part in the formation of the filament. Purified collagenase takes out radioactivity from the sections. This observation confirms the collagenous nature of the secretion.The other foot-glands as well as the main byssus gland located at the base of the foot show but a very weak labelling not comparable with that of the white gland. This clearly evidences that the collagen occuring in the filament originates from the latter. The white gland may be properly called: collagen gland.Control sections through different parts of the body (mantle-edge, mantle, gills) confirm that our injection technique of the precursor into the palleal margin is a suitable method for a rather quick and specific labelling of the glandular collagen.

Summary In this paper, we report the construction in vitro of chimerae between lambdoid replacement vectors (Murray et al., 1977) and the miniF Apr plasmid: pSC138 (Timmis et al., 1975). F recombinants were shown to be chimerae between the and the F replicons. By genetical tests, we have demonstrated that both and F replication mechanisms are functional: the F recombinant behaves as a non defective plaque forming phage on sensitive bacteria and establishes itself as a stable plasmid on recA F- homoimmune bacteria. In the extra-chromosomal state, the F recombinant apparently retains the controlled autonomous replication and the FI incompatibility characteristics of the F plasmid. The potential experimental uses of these phages are discussed.  相似文献

Primers were developed for 118 microsatellites isolated from grape (Vitis vinifera) genomic libraries enriched for (AC)n repeats. Only one microsatellite sequence matched other grape SSR-sequences in the GeneBank database. Genotyping was carried out in the parental lines and four offspring of two pseudo-test-cross populations, Cabernet Sauvignon x Seyval and Chardonnay x Bianca, and a further six other grape genotypes (V. vinifera Sultanina, Merlot, Syrah, Müller-Thurgau, Vitis Regent and V. riparia Gloire de Montpellier). A total of 108 microsatellites showed easily scorable alleles and 100 of them segregated according to a configuration suitable for mapping in either cross. A further 8 SSRs, although unsuitable for mapping in those crosses, showed polymorphism in the other genotypes tested. This set of markers was used, along with 75 microsatellites of other repeat-types, to fingerprint 46 offspring of the cross Chardonnay x Bianca. For each full-sib, individual heterozygosity and distance in repeat units between pairs of alleles at each locus (mean d2) were calculated as a tool for predicting highly outbred recombinant individuals. Six microsatellites with segregation ratios significantly distorted towards the lack of homozygous sibs were identified and mapped to linkage groups LG 3 and LG 5. Estimation of heterozygosity at genome-wide level and genotyping at loci for which homozygous sibs are discriminated against are discussed for marker-assisted background selection in outcrossing grapevines.  相似文献

In the theoretical part of the present work the input-output relation for a multi-input system is developed into a functional power series. This is formally equivalent to a decomposition of the system into a sum of all possible combinations of 1-, 2-, 3-... input subsystems. The average response of the system to a uniformly moving patern is known to be a Fourier series with respect to spatial frequency. The coefficients of the series are linear combinations of the weights by which different subsystems contribute to the total reaction. If a system can be shown to have essential nonlinearities of no higher than second order it is possible to calculate, from a Fourier analysis of the average movement response, the weight by which the nonlinear interaction between any two input elements contributes to the total reaction. This interaction is termed elementary movement detector. By the analysis presented here the arrangement of the elementary movement detectors may be determined for a two-dimensional array of input elements and the strength of their contributions to the total movement reaction may be calculated. Special experimental methods have been developed which allow one to apply this analysis to the visual system of the fruitfly Drosophila. The preliminary data presented show that the direction sensitive optomotor response of Drosophila can be attributed predominantly to the contributions from two elementary movement detectors which interconnect neighbouring visual elements. The detectors are oriented in the hexagonal array of the compound eye at +30° and at-30° with respect to the horizontal line of symmetry. A weak contribution from a detector between neighbouring elements along the horizontal line of symmetry is suggested by the present data. In the course of the analysis the contrast transfer properties of the compound eye are characterized.  相似文献

Extreme resistance in cultivated potato (Solanum tuberosum) to potato viruses Y and A (PVY and PVA) conditioned by the presence of Ry genes introduced from Solanum stoloniferum was described by Cockerham (1970). Cockerham detailed a number of genes which controlled a variety of reactions, including extreme resistance to both viruses (i.e. little or no visible reaction of plants and no viral replication following graft and manual inoculation) controlled by gene Ry sto. In the present study, cvs Pirola and Barbara, which contain a Ry gene, were found to have extreme resistance to PVY isolates from the ordinary (PVY°), veinal necrosis (PVYN) and potato tuber necrotic ringspot (PVYNTN) subgroups, and PVA. The inheritance of this phenotype was examined in seedling progenies obtained by crossing Barbara and Pirola with susceptible cultivars. Segregation data for resistance to PVY and PVA in a progeny involving cv Pirola best fitted a genetical model of one gene controlling extreme resistance to both PVY and PVA, although the possibility that there are two genes, each controlling resistance to one virus but closely linked, cannot be excluded. Segregation data from progenies involving cv Barbara best fitted a genetical model in which there are two independent genes, one controlling extreme resistance to PVA and PVY and a second gene controlling extreme resistance to PVA but not to PVY. This previously unrecognised gene conferring extreme resistance to PVA only, should be given the notation Ra in keeping with nomenclature used for other resistance genes.  相似文献

Summary The clearish plaque mutants virC which were isolated from true-virulent, virLvirCvirR (virLCR), do not complement CI mutants but CII, CIII and mutant (c 42) for lysogenization. No complementation for lysogenization was observed between virCR and any CI, CII, CIII or y mutants. No lysogen was obtained when virC or virC carrying susN, susO or susP was infected to -sensitive sup - host. This was also true for virCR. Infection of ind - lysogen with virCRsusNO(P) or virCsusNO(P) results in marked prophage induction. Effect of virCRsusNO(P) on prophage induction is stronger than that of virCsusNO(P). These results suggest the existence of gene(s) for anti-repressor. When virCsusNO(P) or virCRsusNO(P) was infected to W3350 sup - at high m.o.i., lysogen in anti-immune state and that in weak-immune state was obtained, respetively. Wild type phage forms clear plaque on virCsusNO(P) lysogen with e.o.p. of one and no plaque on virCRsusNO(P) lysogen. T4rII can plate on both lysogens. This weak-immunity caused by virCRsusNO(P) prophage is different from CI immunity and not abolished by irradiation of ultraviolet light (hereafter this is referred to as the vir-immunity). Action of anti-immunity and vir-immunity are almost specific. Possible functional sites for anti-and vir-immunity substances are suggested to be virL and virR regions. A hypothesis was presented that the vir-immunity may caused by the overproduced anti-immunity substance coded from x region.This material has been published as an abstract in Jap. J. Summary One hundred and twenty-two varieties, lines and wild accessions of Lycopersicon were screened under three different regimes during the autumn/winter season of 1982–83 and 1983–84 for resistance to tomato leaf curl virus (TLCV). L. hirsutum f. glabratum (B6013) and L. hirsutum f. typicum (A1904) proved to be highly resistant to TLCV in all three environments. Various accessions of L. peruvianum were also highly resistant. L. pimpinellifolium (A1921) exhibited no TLCV symptoms within 90 days. Of the cultivated varieties, Acc 99 exhibited the minimim score for susceptibility; AC 142, Collection No. 2, Kalyanpur Angurlata and HS 101 had a low rating for virus incidence. The inheritance of resistance was studied in the interspecific crosses between a TLCV resistant line of L. pimpinellifolium (A1921) and five (HS 101, HS 102, HS 110, Pusa Ruby and Punjab Chhuhara) susceptible cultivars of L. esculentum. Parents, F1, F2 and backcross progenies were artificially inoculated with local strains of TLCV using vector the viruliferious whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Genn.). Data indicated that the resistance of L. pimpinellifolium (A 1921) is monogenic and incompletely dominant over susceptibility.  相似文献

Summary A comparative study was performed on the fibre populations in tibialis anterior muscles of mouse, rat, guinea pig, rabbit, cat and dog using the two different methods of histochemical staining for myofibrillar ATPase after acid (Brooke and Kaiser 1970) or alkaline preincubations (Guth and Samaha 1970). For all species a complete correspondence existed between type I (Brooke and Kaiser 1970) and fibres (Samaha et al. 1970). Gross correspondence (>85%) existed between IIA and IIB (Brooke and Kaiser 1970) and and fibres (Samaha et al. 1970) respectively in mouse, guinea pig, rabbit, cat and dog. In the case of mouse and dog, this high degree of correspondence was based on the assumption that mouse tibialis anterior contains no type I and the dog no type IIB fibres. For the rat, a pronounced overlap existed between IIA fibres on the one hand and and fibres on the other hand as well as between IIB fibres and and fibres. These observations lead to the conclusion that the two classification schemes are not interchangeable for all species and that the two terminologies should be used only in relation with the methods from which they were derived.  相似文献

The main carotenoid of Flavobacterium strain R1560 has been identified as (3R,3R)-zeaxanthin. Also present were small amounts of 15-cis-phytoene, phytofluene, -carotene (7,8,7,8-tetrahydro-, -carotene plus 7,8,11,12-tetrahydro-, -carotene), neurosporene, lycopene, -zeacarotene, -carotene, -carotene, -cryptoxanthin, rubixanthin, 3-hydroxy--zeacarotene and several apo-carotenals. Zeaxanthin production was inhibited by nicotine (10 mM), and lycopene and rubixanthin accumulated. The biosynthesis of zeaxanthin is discussed in terms of pathways and also of half-molecule reaction sequences. The presence of zeaxanthin may be a characteristic of a group of Flavobacterium species, and may thus be useful in the taxonomic classification of these organisms.  相似文献

A novel expression vector based on the rmf promoter (Wada et al. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA (1995) 87: 2657–2661) was developed. Using lacZ gene as a model, protein production depending on cell growth phase and growth rate was found. In addition, by subjecting the recombinant cells to temperature downshift and substrate famine, the strain was capable of producing 35000–40000 units of -galactosidase. These characteristics indicate the potential application of this expression vector to bioprocessing such as protein production in continuous or batch fermentation, biotransformation using entrapped cells, and in situ bioremediation.  相似文献

An acyltransferase hydroxycinnamoyl-Coenzyme A: -hydroxypalmitic acid O-hydroxycinnamoyltransferase (HHT; EC 2.3.1.-), which transfers hydroxycinnamic acids from hydroxycinnamoyl-CoA thioesters to several hydroxylated fatty acid derivatives, was characterized from tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. Xanthi nc) cell-suspension cultures. It exhibited the same properties as the enzyme previously detected in wound-healing potato tuber discs (Lotfy et al., 1994, Phytochemistry 35: 1419–1424), and especially a marked specificity for -hydroxypalmitic acid and feruloyl-CoA. It was purified 300-fold to near homogeneity from late logarithmic-phase cell suspensions. The apparent molecular mass of the native protein was 55 kDa and its isoelectric point, estimated by electrofocusing, was 4.6. The purified enzyme conjugated ferulic acid to -hydroxypalmitic acid and to 1-tetradecanol, its main lipidic substrates, suggesting that the same enzyme probably synthesizes the different esters of 1-alkanols and of -hydroxy fatty acids which are formed in vitro.Abbreviations ABA abscisic acid - IEF isoelectric focusing - HHT hydroxycinnamoyl-Coenzyme A: -hydroxypalmitic acid O-hydroxycinnamoyltransferase - pI isoelectric point  相似文献

Shoot tips of York and Vermont Spur Delicious apples (Malus domestica Borkh.) were cultured in vitro to test the influence of K+, Mg++ and gelling agent concentrations on vitrification. These concentrations were 20.05, 14.05 and 8.05 mM K+, 1.5 and 3.0 mM Mg++, 7.0 g/l Difco Bacto agar and 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 g/l Gelrite. The lowest K+ level produced a higher percentage of vitrified shoots, affected tissue appearance, reduced shoot number and shoot elongation and apparently altered shoot metabolic activity. Gelrite consistently produced vitrified leaves and stems, even though media gelled with 1.5 g/l Gelrite presented the same apparent gel firmness as using 7 g/l Difco Bacto agar, which did not induce vitrification. Less shoot elongation, fewer total shoots, and more usable shoots of York were obtained on Bacto-agar, while similar but less noticeable effects were obtained with Vermont Spur Delicious. The results presented here show that vitrification can be studied in a standardized system in which the only change is substitution of one gelling agent for another.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Nach Röntgenbestrahlung vonArabidopsis thaliana wurde in der X1-Generation auf Grund einer intraindividuellen Musteranalyse sowie entsprechender Kreuzungen eine gesicherte Erhöhung der Rate von plasmonisch bedingten Blattfarbveränderungen festgestellt. Bei der Mehrzahl dieser X1-Pflanzen waren die mutierten, zumeist weißen Gewebe sektorialchimärisch angeordnet; Schecken, wie sie durch eine zufallsgemäße Entmischung erblich verschiedener Plastiden entstehen, fanden sich nur in 8,3% aller Fälle. Verschiedene der induzierten Formen konnten durch einen cytologischen Nachweis von Plastiden-Mischzellen als Plastom-Mutanten identifiziert werden. Insgesamt stieg die Häufigkeit der sicher erwiesenen Fälle von Plasmonabänderungen im Mittel zweier Versuche von einer Spontanrate um max. 0,07 nach Samenbestrahlung auf 1,95 und nach einer Bestrahlung von Zygoten auf 0,95. Damit wurde erstmalig die Möglichkeit aufgezeigt, auchdie Mutationshäufigkeit extrachromosomaler Erbstrukturen durch eine Röntgenbestrahlung zu erhöhen.Mit 5 TextabbildungenHerrn Professor Dr. A.Scheibe zum 60. Summary A new bacteriophage from Halobacterium halobium has been isolated and partially characterized. It is not homologous to the phage H (Schnabel, et al. 1982) which infects the same bacterium, though it appeared spontaneously in a culture of H adapted to H. halobium NRL/JW. The size and morphology of N are comparable to that of other known halophages. The genome of N consists of linear double-stranded DNA, 56 kb in size, whose dCMP is totally replaced by 5-methyl-dCMP. This is the second case of a fully cytosine-methylated genome, the bacteriophage XP12 from Xanthomonas oryzae, being so far the only one reported. Like H, the N, genome seems to have terminal redundancy and circular permutation. N is the first halobacterial phage which survives prolonged exposure to low ionic strength environments. After 48 h incubation in distilled water a loss in infectivity of less than 50% is observed.  相似文献
