Populations of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis were monitored in three small ponds in a marsh on the Mediterranean coast. Samples were taken approximately every three weeks from July 1992 to November 1993. Salinity, temperature, conductivity, pH and oxygen concentration were measured in the field. Population density was determined from preserved quantitative samples. Individuals were classified as mictic females, amictic females, non-ovigerous females, and males, differentiating between two morphotypes (S and L). From these counts, a level of mixis was calculated. We also determined the proportion of mictic females in natural populations by culturing females isolated from fresh samples. From these data, mictic patterns over time and correlation between levels of mixis and environmental and population parameters were analyzed. From a previous study S and L morphotypes were known to correspond to genetically different clonal groups. Our data showed that reproduction was predominantly parthenogenetic in these clonal groups, but mictic females were found in most samples, the proportion of mictic females ranging from 0 to 29%. The clonal groups showed different patterns of mixis. L clonal group presented a continuous sexual reproductive pattern. In contrast, S clones showed a rather punctuated mictic pattern. A positive correlation between levels of sexual reproduction and population density was found for S and L groups. However, they differed in their density threshold for mictic reproduction. The adaptive meaning of these patterns and their implications in maintaining genetic diversity within and between populations are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Evidence for the origin and dating of crop weed communities composed of summer annuals is to be found in palaeobotanical and archaeological data. There is archaeological evidence that around the middle of the first millennium BC fields were taken into permanent cultivation, even on the poorer soils.Fertilization with lime and manure and Plaggenwirtschaft were evidently involved in this early agriculture. In this paper the idea is put forward that Plaggenwirtschaft resulted in a sudden increase in the number of weed species brought together in cornfields and that this practise led to the very first beginning of our modern weed communities.Translated into English by Drs. Summary The radial nerve cords of members of the class Ophiuroidea consist of two parts, the ectoneural and the hyponeural tissues, which are separated by an acellular basal lamina. The hyponeural tissue is composed entirely of motor fibres. The cell bodies of the hyponeural neurones are arranged in ganglia, one to each segment of the arm, and each containing approximately one hundred cell bodies. Synaptic contact between the two tissues occurs across the basal lamina. Ultrastructural evidence shows that the majority of these synapses operate in the ectoneural to hyponeural direction. Three pairs of nerve bundles, each containing approximately thirty five large motor fibres arise from each ganglion and innervate the intervertebral muscles. The large motor fibres divide into a number of pre-terminal axons in the region in which the motor fibre enters the muscle block. The terminal axons run at right-angles across the muscle fibres and neuromuscular junctions are found at the points of contact between the two; each terminal axon makes contact with a large number of muscle fibres. The hyponeural axons also pass through the juxtaligamental tissue before they reach the muscle blocks and there is some evidence of synaptic contact with the juxtaligamental cells. The juxtaligamental tissue is thought to be associated with changes in the structural properties of the collagenous ligaments of the arm during arm autotomy (Wilkie 1979). Degeneration studies confirmed the layout of the hyponeural motor axons.  相似文献

The morphological stability of hairy root cultures of Pimpinella anisum was studied using cultures grown in four different media, both in darkness and under photoperiod conditions of 16 h light; they were first subcultured every eight days and then later on every three weeks. From the four media tested, the hairy root cultures grown in SH medium both in darkness and under photoperiod conditions showed a marked morphological stability with no de-differentiation or greening, when compared with the other culture systems. The time-course study of the essential oils, isolated by distillation-extraction and analysed by GC and GC-MS, showed only quantitative differences in the composition of the oils. A clear heterogeneity in the accumulation pattern was found with regard to the five dominant compounds (pregeijerene, geijerene, zingiberene, -bisabolene and trans-epoxypseudoisoeugenyl 2-methylbutyrate), i.e., those that appeared in a relative amount higher than 5% at least once during the time-course study of the oils from the eight culture systems.  相似文献

A novel 134 kDa, calcium-independent chitin-binding lectin, chitovibrin, is secreted by the marine bacteriumVibrio parahemolyticus, inducible with chitin or chitin-oligomers. Chitovibrin shows no apparent enzymatic activity but exhibits a strong affinity for chitin and chito-oligomers >dp9. The protein has an isoelectric pH of 3.6, shows thermal tolerance, binds chitin with an optimum at pH 6 and is active in 0–4m NaCl. Chitovibrin appears to be completely different from other reported Vibrio lectins and may function to bindV. parahemolyticus to chitin substrates, or to capture or sequester chito-oligomers. The Government of Ghana has recently declared five coastal wetlands to be Ramsar sites. This requires the wise use of wetlands of international importance for bird habitat, but does not preclude human habitation or ecologically friendly development. The sites are Muni-Pomadze, Densu Delta, Sakumo, Songor and Keta. An attempt was made to identify and assess a range of development options for initiation within the sites that would be compatible with the environmental concerns of Ramsar, while also being technically and economically viable and socially acceptable to the communities in the sites. The appraisal included developing a detailed understanding of the physical, biological, human and institutional resources of the areas, the land uses and prevailing livelihood systems of local people, and the pressures placed on the natural resources of the wetlands. Many of the developments nominated by stakeholders were rejected, but twenty topics passed the initial tests. These were considered in more detail using information collected for the study by national specialists. Most of the options were considered suitable for local level implementation by community groups or local entrepreneurs. Government assistance will be needed to ensure an enabling institutional framework for small-scale business development is provided.  相似文献

The GAC (Global Area Coverage) by the NOAA-AVHRR satellites represents an excellent data set for studying global and regional patterns of variations in surface conditions driven in part by climatic variation. In this pilot study we examined whether biodiversity hotspots, defined from peak concentrations of neoendemics as well as geographically relict forms, differ in ecoclimatic stability from surrounding areas under present-day climatic conditions. Coefficients of variation of the ratio between brightness surface temperature (Ts) and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) based upon 10 years' monthly composited scenes of tropical Africa revealed distinctive geographical patterns of interannual variability in surface conditions. Regions with a predominance of old species are characterized by spatial uniformity in the ecoclimatic variability, while regions where rapidly radiating groups dominate are spatially complex in this respect. However, the exact hotspots, with peak concentrations of endemic species, are characterized by a local reduction in ecoclimatic variability, or placement on the boundary to a stable region. This relationship was supported statistically by comparing ecoclimatic profiles across montane forests representing hotspots, and those of other montane forests. It is suggested that, because of interactions between prevailing atmospheric flows, topography and vegetation, the impact of extreme weather is moderated locally. The correlation between current stability and aggregates of neoendemics as well as old relics indicate that local moderation of climatic extremes persist through shifting climatic periods, permitting populations of unique species to survive in these places. The results are used to identify study sites for better ground truthing and for paleoclimatological studies which may be useful for more thorough studies of these relationships.  相似文献

Field experiments show that the spatial light distribution in the shore region determines the preferred direction of migration. Sequences encoding the immunoglobulin heavy-chain variable (VH) domains were engineered in a new general purpose vector to transform plants via Agrobacterium. The expression of an isolated VH domain (IVD) after introduction into the plant genome has been monitored by northern, western and immuno-histochemical analysis. Immunoblotting showed that the polypeptide was stably expressed and accounted for up to 1% of the soluble protein fraction. It is therefore proposed that single immunoglobulin domains of suitable specificity expressed in plants may constitute an effective system to inhibit the activity of molecules involved in plant pathology or plant development.  相似文献

Summary A comparative analysis of eight cultivars of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum) classified by height as tall (T), semi-dwarf (D1), dwarf (D2) and very dwarf (D3) was conducted to study their efficiency of oxygen exchange during photosynthesis and dark respiration. Two cultivars were included in each height group.Cultivars carrying Norin 10 dwarfing genes (D1, D2 and D3) were found to have a significantly higher photosynthetic rate per unit leaf area than talls (T) that lack these genes. Among the Norin gene carriers, dwarf group (D2) was most efficient, followed by very dwarf (D3) and semi-dwarf (D1).Photosynthetic rate and respiratory rate were found to have a positive relationship.  相似文献

Using mathematical modeling, we studied the biophysical aspects of the growth of the cell membrane and the growth of the actin network of the cytoskeleton of a neuron cultured on the rigid sublayer and the correlation between these processes. To describe the dynamics of the growth of the cytoskeleton limited by the cell membrane, we used the model of the thermal ratchet. Using the approaches of theoretical biophysics, we obtained a simple biophysical criterion that governs the selection of an alternative scenario of the formation of the cell, either growth of a single neurite or growth of a number of neurites. This criterion depends on the value of the adhesion between the cell and the substrate, the dimension of the actin monomer, and the thermal energy determining the frequency of thermal fluctuations of the cell membrane.  相似文献

Fifteen shrub stands of Amelanchier alnifolia vegetation were studied using Braun-Blanquet procedures, tabulated, and ordered by Twinspan, Decorana, and field experience into 5 groups of stands. The stands occurred on the lower slopes of the southwestern Teton and southeastern Big Hole mountains of eastern Idaho and in-and outside a U.S. Forest Service exclosure above the Hoback River in adjacent Wyoming. The ecology of this Amelanchier vegetation as a whole and of the 5 groups of stands is discussed using Jenny's factors of soil formation (1941, 1958, 1980) as a framework. Plant indicator values (Ellenberg 1979, 1988) which rank species on their occurrences in relation to light, temperature, continentality of climate, water availability, soil reaction (pH), and soil nitrogen supply, were independently assigned to the 121 species of vascular plants encountered in the described stands.  相似文献

Electrophoretic patterns of seed storage proteins, the high-molecular-weight glutenins and gliadins, were studied in 468 plants of the common wheat cultivar Chinese Spring regenerated from callus culture of immature embryos, in 115 plants grown from seeds treated with nitrosoethylurea and in 260 control plants. From 5 to 21 single grains were analysed from each plant. In these three groups, the frequency of inherited mutations causing the loss of all proteins controlled by a locus (null-mutations, probably caused by a chromosomal deficiency) was 0.69%, 2.07%, and 0.05% per locus (the differences were statistically significant), respectively, while that of mutations causing the loss of a single protein band was 0.11%, 0.33%, and 0.05%, respectively. The loss of all of the gliadins controlled by Gli-B1 or GH-B2 (mutations were probably caused by a deletion of satellites of the corresponding chromosomes), was significantly higher than the loss of gliadins controlled by genomes A and D. Gene mutations altering the electrophoretic mobility of a single protein band in the pattern were found only in the second group of plants (0.44%). Therefore, chemical mutagenesis which produced not only more mutations than cultivation of immature wheat embryos in vitro, but also a higher ratio of mutations that altered DNA sequences, can be considered as an easier and comparatively more promising way for obtaining new improved variants of loci controlling biochemical characteristics in wheat. Somaclonal variation, on the other hand, was probably mainly caused by chromosomal abnormalities and could therefore hardly be considered as a useful tool in wheat breeding.  相似文献

Summary Seeds of two cultivars, each of macrosperma and microsperma varietal groups of lentil were mutagenised with gamma-rays and NMU to determine their mutagen sensitivity and mutability. The increasing doeses of gamma-rays and NMU decreased germination, root and shoot length, pollen fertility and plant survival, but increased the occurrence of leaf spots. The root system was found to be more sensitive to both mutagens than the shoot. The macrosperma varietal group was more sensitive to both the mutagens than microsperma group. In microsperma group, variety Pusa-1 was more sensitive to both the mutagens than L-259, while in the macrosperma group L-1491 showed more sensitivity to the mutagens than L-1492. Radio-sensitivity corresponded positively with chemosensitivity in both varietal groups. There was a positive relationship between radio- and chemo-sensitivity of the genotypes and their mutability. The results also revealed the existence of a parallelism between radiomutability and chemo-mutability. Due to saturation in the mutational events and vigour of both diplontic and haplontic selection in the biological material, the mutation frequency either decreased or remained constant at higher doses of the mutagens.  相似文献

Summary A population of nerve fibres in the gastro-intestinal tract of mice showing a high affinity for quinacrine was revealed by fluorescence microscopy. Similar results were obtained in rats and guinea pigs. Whole-mounts of sheets of the smooth muscle layer following incubation in 10-6-10-7 M quinacrine for 15–60 min revealed fine fluorescent varicose nerve fibers in the myenteric plexus of Auerbach both around nerve cell bodies and in the interconnecting strands. Many fibers were also present between the strands of the plexus, especially running parallel to the circular muscle layer. Such fibers were not seen in similarly quinacrine-incubated irides. A proportion of the cell bodies in Auerbach's plexus also showed quinacrine accumulation. These cells were apparently smaller neurons, sometimes with fluorescent processes. Intraperitoneal injections of quinacrine failed to demonstrate nerve fibers, but some cell bodies in Auerbach's plexus were positive. Subsequent paraformaldehyde treatment for monoamine visualization showed persistent adrenergic nerve terminals in the intestine and iris. These nerves seemed to be fewer and had a more yellow fluorescence than normally. The identity of the quinacrine-positive fibers is discussed with respect to recent suggestions that purinergic, substance P, enkephalin, and somatosin-containing nerves, in addition to adrenergic and cholinergic nerves, are present in the gut wall.Supported by the Swedish Medical Research Council (04X-03185). Synopsis Small microcharacidsCheirodon pulcher were netted during the dry season in pools of the savanna llanos at a considerable distance from the main river channel. Fish could have moved from the river to these pools using sun-compass orientation. Orientation responses of these fish were tested in a four-armed experimental device, exposed to direct sunlight or to azimuth-inverted sunlight reflected by a mirror. Groups of 20 fish were placed in a central area, released and then counted in the arm traps. When exposed to direct sunlight, fish oriented south, both in the morning and afternoon. Nevertheless, when the sun azimuth was inverted they oriented north, indicating that they use a sun-compass and that they compensate for sun-azimuth inversion at noon in a way that geographic headings remain constant throughout the day. These results reinforce previous laboratory interpretations which suggested that these flood plain species migrate inland during the high-water period and return to the main river channels before the dry season begins.  相似文献

Summary Organic matter was extracted with a mixture of 0.1M Na4P2O7 and 0.1M NaOH from soil and a commercial organic matter product, Aqua Humus, and separated into humic and fulvic acids according to their solubility in acid and alkaline solutions. They were purified by passage through a cation exchange resin, freeze-dried, and used for characterization and seedling growth studies. The CEC increased with pH for both humic and fulvic acids. Data from tobacco seedling studies show that humic and fulvic acids from both sources increased root number and length at low concentrations while at high concentrations, humic acids inhibited length and number of roots but fulvic acids had no effect. The results support the proposition that fractions of organic matter referred to as humic and fulvic acids affect root development by means other than as a source of nutrients.  相似文献

The proteinaceous extracellular material (PEM) synthesized by the cells of the slime strain of Neurospora crassa (see Martinez et al. 1989) was solubilized by treatment with urea or guanidine. Removal of these chemicals by dialysis, caused reassembly of the solubilized proteins into material with the same microscopic appearance as the original PEM. Polypeptide patterns from both native and reassembled structures were identical. Dialysis-mediated reassembly of the solubilized proteins appeared to be dependent on both concentration of the soluble macromolecules and time. Gel chromatography of PEM solubilized with different agents revealed two discrete populations of complexes with molecular masses of 1,500 and 500 kDa respectively.
