Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) provide a non-muscular communication channel for persons with severe motor impairments. Previous studies have shown that the aptitude with which a BCI can be controlled varies from person to person. A reliable predictor of performance could facilitate selection of a suitable BCI paradigm. Eleven severely motor impaired participants performed three sessions of a P300 BCI web browsing task. Before each session auditory oddball data were collected to predict the BCI aptitude of the participants exhibited in the current session. We found a strong relationship of early positive and negative potentials around 200 ms (elicited with the auditory oddball task) with performance. The amplitude of the P2 (r  =  −0.77) and of the N2 (r  =  −0.86) had the strongest correlations. Aptitude prediction using an auditory oddball was successful. The finding that the N2 amplitude is a stronger predictor of performance than P3 amplitude was reproduced after initially showing this effect with a healthy sample of BCI users. This will reduce strain on the end-users by minimizing the time needed to find suitable paradigms and inspire new approaches to improve performance.  相似文献

Using a dual-task paradigm with an oddball secondary task, P300 amplitude and latency were studied as a function of factorially manipulated oddball probability (low = .22, high = .44) and primary task type. In addition to a Baselinecondition (oddball task only), three primary tasks were used: (1) Pure Sensory;watching a movie; (2) Pure Motor (manipulating a flashlight); and (3) Sensory/Motor(using the flashlight to trace the outlines of characters in a movie). The findings included the usual significant effects of probability on amplitude. There was also a significant effect of task type on amplitude, and a significant interaction of oddball probability with task type. In the low but not high probability condition, a pure Sensory task depressed P300 amplitude. In both probability conditions, the Sensory/motortask depressed P300 amplitude. Only task type had a significant effect on P300 latency. The results confirm the ability of other labs (using Sensory/motor primary tasks) to demonstrate P300 depression at high oddball probability, in view of the difficulty in our lab of achieving P300 depression with pure sensory tasks and high oddball probabilities. The results are discussed in terms of partial overlap of processing resource pools. A preliminary report of these data was presented at the 1990 meetings of the Society for Psychophysiological Research.  相似文献

This study assessed the effect of alternate nostril yoga breathing (nadisuddhi pranayama) on P300 auditory evoked potentials compared to a session of breath awareness of equal duration, in 20 male adult volunteers who had an experience of yoga breathing practices for more than three months. Peak amplitudes and peak latencies of the P300 were assessed before and after the respective sessions. There was a significant increase in the P300 peak amplitudes at Fz, Cz, and Pz and a significant decrease in the peak latency at Fz alone following alternate nostril yoga breathing. Following breath awareness there was a significant increase in the peak amplitude of P300 at Cz. This suggests that alternate nostril yoga breathing positively influences cognitive processes which are required for sustained attention at different scalp sites (frontal, vertex and parietal), whereas breath awareness brings about changes at the vertex alone.  相似文献

Objective

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) provide a non-muscular communication channel for patients with late-stage motoneuron disease (e.g., amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)) or otherwise motor impaired people and are also used for motor rehabilitation in chronic stroke. Differences in the ability to use a BCI vary from person to person and from session to session. A reliable predictor of aptitude would allow for the selection of suitable BCI paradigms. For this reason, we investigated whether P300 BCI aptitude could be predicted from a short experiment with a standard auditory oddball.

Methods

Forty healthy participants performed an electroencephalography (EEG) based visual and auditory P300-BCI spelling task in a single session. In addition, prior to each session an auditory oddball was presented. Features extracted from the auditory oddball were analyzed with respect to predictive power for BCI aptitude.

Results

Correlation between auditory oddball response and P300 BCI accuracy revealed a strong relationship between accuracy and N2 amplitude and the amplitude of a late ERP component between 400 and 600 ms. Interestingly, the P3 amplitude of the auditory oddball response was not correlated with accuracy.

Conclusions

Event-related potentials recorded during a standard auditory oddball session moderately predict aptitude in an audiory and highly in a visual P300 BCI. The predictor will allow for faster paradigm selection.

Significance

Our method will reduce strain on patients because unsuccessful training may be avoided, provided the results can be generalized to the patient population.  相似文献

The parameters of an event-related EEG potential (ERP), P300 wave, are now extensively used as objective neurophysiological indices of the state of cognitive functions. At the same time, information on the effects of the autonomic nervous system on the parameters of P300 is limited. In Parkinson’s disease clinics, in addition to the leading motor disorders, more or less clear psychoemotional, cognitive, and autonomic (in particular cardiovascular) impairments are usually observed. This allows one to study the dependence between the cardiovascular dysfunction and intensity of cognitive disorders in Parkinsonian patients. In our study on this contingent, we analyzed correlations between the parameters of P300 potential, indices of the state of the cognitive sphere (determined using a questionnaire, Mini Mental State Examination, MMSE, and a Luriya’s test), and indices of variational pulsometry. Thirty-five Parkinsonian patients (49 to 74 years, severity of disease 1.5 to 3.0 by the international classification) were examined. We found a negative influence of excessive sympathetic tonus in cardiovascular control on the state of cognitive functions. The latency of P300 potential was longer in patients with greater intensities of sympathetic influences on the cardiovascular system. The coefficients of correlation of the latency of P300 with the amplitude of mode of R-R intervals (AMo), index of tension in the regulatory systems by Baevskii (IT), and index of autonomic balance by Baevskii (IAB) were 0.52 (P < 0.01), 0.36 (P < 0.05), and 0.37 (P < 0.05), respectively. The above autonomic indices demonstrated significant negative correlations with the volume of short-term memory measured by Luriya’s test. The P300 latency, in turn, showed negative correlations with the memory volume estimated by the MMSE scale and Luriya’s test. With increase in the age of patients, the degree of the above-mentioned correlations between the P300 latency, memory volume (by Luriya’s test), and parameters of variational pulsometry increased. Our data emphasize the expedience of “routine” studies of the balance of sympathetic and parasympathetic control in pathological states accompanied by clear or subclinical cognitive disorders. Early recognition of cardiovascular dysfunction and its corresponding therapeutic correction should improve the state of brain functions and quality of life in patients suffering from neurodegenerative diseases, in particular from Parkinson’s disease. We studied auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) in 40 patients with dementia of the Alzheimer type (DAT). Peak latencies and amplitudes of N100, P200 and P300 components were measured. To study the possible relationships between the ERPs and monoaminergic neurotransmitter functions, CSF neurotransmitter metabolites were also analyzed. In patients with DAT, the P300 amplitude was significantly reduced and the P300 latency was prolonged. CSF concentrations of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) and homovanillic acid (HVA) were decreased. The P300 amplitude was significantly correlated with the 5-HIAA concentration. There were no correlations between the P300 components and the HVA concentration. These findings suggest that the serotonergic system modulates the P300 component of ERPs in patients with DAT.  相似文献

The effects of stimulus probability on P300 from a 3-tone paradigm were examined in two experiments. Experiment 1 manipulated the probability of the non-target tone as 0.10, 0.45, or 0.80, while the target tone probability was always 0.10. Experiment 2 manipulated the probability of 3 tones as 0.10, 0.30, or 0.60, with one of the infrequent tones assigned as the target in each condition. Subjects were required to press a button in response to the target stimulus in both experiments. The results indicated that the P300 to the target and the non-target were both affected by the probability of the eliciting stimulus, such that component amplitude was inversely related to probability; no reliable P300 latency effects were found. Target tones elicited larger P300 amplitude than the non-target tones at the same probability. The findings suggest that probability effects on P300 amplitude are independent of responding to a specific target stimulus and are discussed with reference to the clinical utility of the 3-tone paradigm.  相似文献

The P300 component is influenced by task relevance which is typically achieved by employing an active task involving the evoking stimulus. This study explored the possibility of making use of the subject's name, which is innately relevant to the subject, to achieve stimulus relevance.Dependence of P300 amplitude on auditory presentation of the subject's name was assessed in two experiments in which no response was required: (1) a passive 2-word “oddball” paradigm where the low probability word was the subject's first name; (2) a passive 3-word “oddball” paradigm consisting of two low probability words, one of which was the subject's name, and a third, high probability word.In the first experiment, a typical active 2-word “oddball” paradigm, which did not include the subject's name, was compared with the passive paradigm.P300 amplitude was larger in response to the subject's name compared to the other word in the two-word paradigm, indicating that the name can be used to evoke P300 in a passive paradigm. It was also larger than either of the other two words in the 3-word paradigm, suggesting that stimulus relevance has an additional effect on P300 amplitude beyond rarity.  相似文献

Diurnal variation in the P300 component of the human cognitive event-related potential (ERP) was examined. The P300 component is considered to be a measure of neuroelectric activity related to cognitive functions such as attention allocation and information processing. Nine diurnally active healthy male subjects whose sleep-wake rhythms were synchronized prior to the experiment were studied. The P300 components oral temperature, heart rate, left- and right-hand grip strength, reaction time, subjectively rated sleepiness, attention level, and fatigue were measured at 08:00, 11:00, 14:00, 17:00, and 20:00. Significant diurnal variations in P300 latency, P300 amplitude, oral temperature, heart rate, left- and right-hand grip strength, subjectively rated sleepiness, and attention level were observed. The P300 latency at 08:00 was significantly longer than at 11:00, 17:00, and 20:00, while the P300 amplitude at 08:00 was significantly greater than at 17:00 and 20:00. The P300 latency was correlated positively with subjectively rated sleepiness and negatively correlated with subjectively rated attention level. The P300 brain-computer interface (BCI) is currently the most efficient BCI. This interface is based on detection of the P300 wave of the brain potentials evoked when a symbol related to the intended input is highlighted. To increase operation speed of the P300 BCI, reduction of the number of stimuli repetitions is needed. This reduction leads to increase of the relative contribution to the input symbol detection from the reaction to the first target stimulus. It is known that the event-related potentials (ERP) to the first stimulus presentations can be different from the ERP to stimuli presented latter. In particular, the amplitude of responses to the first stimulus presentations is often increased, which is beneficial for their recognition by the BCI. However, this effect was not studied within the BCI framework. The current study examined the ERP obtained from healthy participants (n = 14) in the standard P300 BCI paradigm using 10 trials, as well as in the modified P300 BCI with stimuli presented on moving objects in triple-trial (n = 6) and single-trial (n = 6) stimulation modes. Increased ERP amplitude was observed in response to the first target stimuli in both conditions, as well as in the single-trial mode comparing to triple-trial. We discuss the prospects of using the specific features of the ERP to first stimuli and the single-trial ERP for optimizing the high-speed modes in the P300 BCIs.  相似文献

FOXO1 is an important downstream mediator of the insulin signaling pathway. In the fed state, elevated insulin phosphorylates FOXO1 via AKT, leading to its nuclear exclusion and degradation. A reduction in nuclear FOXO1 levels then leads to suppression of hepatic glucose production. However, the mechanism leading to expression of Foxo1 gene in the fasted state is less clear. We found that Foxo1 mRNA and FOXO1 protein levels of Foxo1 were increased significantly in the liver of mice after 16 h of fasting. Furthermore, dibutyrl cAMP stimulated the expression of Foxo1 at both mRNA and protein level in hepatocytes. Because cAMP-PKA regulates hepatic glucose production through cAMP-response element-binding protein co-activators, we depleted these co-activators using adenoviral shRNAs. Interestingly, only depletion of co-activator P300 resulted in the decrease of Foxo1 mRNA and FOXO1 protein levels. In addition, inhibition of histone acetyltransferase activity of P300 significantly decreased hepatic Foxo1 mRNA and FOXO1 protein levels in fasted mice, as well as fasting blood glucose levels. By characterization of Foxo1 gene promoter, P300 regulates the Foxo1 gene expression through the binding to tandem cAMP-response element sites in the proximal promoter region of Foxo1 gene.  相似文献

Background and Objective

The auditory cortex modulates auditory afferents through the olivocochlear system, which innervates the outer hair cells and the afferent neurons under the inner hair cells in the cochlea. Most of the studies that investigated the efferent activity in humans focused on evaluating the suppression of the otoacoustic emissions by stimulating the contralateral ear with noise, which assesses the activation of the medial olivocochlear bundle. The neurophysiology and the mechanisms involving efferent activity on higher regions of the auditory pathway, however, are still unknown. Also, the lack of studies investigating the effects of noise on human auditory cortex, especially in peadiatric population, points to the need for recording the late auditory potentials in noise conditions. Assessing the auditory efferents in schoolaged children is highly important due to some of its attributed functions such as selective attention and signal detection in noise, which are important abilities related to the development of language and academic skills. For this reason, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of noise on P300 responses of children with normal hearing.

Methods

P300 was recorded in 27 children aged from 8 to 14 years with normal hearing in two conditions: with and whitout contralateral white noise stimulation.

Results

P300 latencies were significantly longer at the presence of contralateral noise. No significant changes were observed for the amplitude values.

Conclusion

Contralateral white noise stimulation delayed P300 latency in a group of school-aged children with normal hearing. These results suggest a possible influence of the medial olivocochlear activation on P300 responses under noise condition.  相似文献

The auditory P50 ERP component has previously been studied either in the repetitive click or the conditioning-testing (C-T) paradigm. For 20 subjects, we compared 4 repetitive click and 4 C-T protocols in a single experimental session with identical recording techniques and with interclick intervals comparable to the C-T intervals. In the C-T protocols, a long interval between click pairs ensured full recovery of P50 to the C click. The analysis of P50 topographies provided strong evidence that the same component was measured in the two paradigms. For both paradigms, P50 amplitude was progressively suppressed as the interclick or C-T interval decreased (P<0.0001), with parallel interval vs. P50 amplitude regression lines for the two paradigms. There was a strong trend (P=0.08) for the repetitive click amplitudes to be smaller than T amplitudes for comparable repetitive click and C-T intervals. Equivalently, this strong trend suggests that repetitive click intervals must be longer (by about 300 ms) than the C-T interval to generate equivalent amplitude P50 responses. We conclude that the same component is measured in both paradigms, that P50 amplitude decreases with decreasing interstimulus intervals in both paradigms, and that in normals, for comparable inter-click and C-T intervals, there is greater P50 suppression in the repetitive click paradigm. Finally, we note that the comparison of paradigms within normals does not necessarily apply to clinical samples.  相似文献

This study investigated how both sex and individual differences in a mental rotation test (MRT) influence performance on working memory (WM). To identify the neural substrate supporting these differences, brain electrical activity was measured using the event-related potential technique. No significant sex differences were observed in a test of verbal WM, however males were significantly faster than females to respond to probe stimuli in a test of spatial WM. This difference was no longer significant after controlling for differences in MRT score, suggesting that rotational ability mediates performance in the spatial memory task for both sexes. A posterior P300 was observed in both tasks as participants encoded information into memory, however the amplitude of the P300 correlated with RT in the spatial task but not in the verbal task. Individual differences in the MRT also correlated with RT and with the amplitude of the P300, but again only in the spatial task. After splitting the analysis by sex, partial correlations controlling for MRT revealed that for males, individual differences in rotational ability completely mediated the correlation between the P300 and RT in the spatial task. This mediating effect was not observed for the female participants. The results therefore suggest a relatively stronger association in males between innate mental rotational ability, spatial memory performance, and brain electrophysiological processes supporting spatial memory.  相似文献

The present study examined whether intention to conceal knowledge affects P300 amplitude and detection accuracy in the concealed information test. Eighteen university students were told to choose one card from five and to hide it. In the conceal condition, participants made an effort to leave their chosen card undetected by suppressing their brain response to it. In the transmit condition, they attempted to inform the experimenter of the chosen card by enhancing brain response to it. In the no secret condition, participants showed the chosen card to the experimenter beforehand and lost their motivation to conceal it. The difference in P300 amplitude between the chosen and unchosen cards was significant only in the conceal and transmit conditions. The results suggest that a larger P300 amplitude for the chosen card was not due to a deception-specific process but rather to increased significance of the item caused by additional processing.  相似文献

Event-related potentials (ERPs) were elicited with an auditory discrimination paradigm in 20 adult female subjects on the first day of their menstrual cycles and approximately 14 days later. The amplitude and latency of the N1, P2, N2 and P3 (P300) components were measured for the two assessment times. No differences in either amplitude or latency for any of the components were observed as a function of menstrual cycle. Half the subjects who took oral contraceptives were compared to the other half who did not. No differences or interactions between these subgroups were obtained for any component amplitude or latency. It was concluded that menstrual cycle and use of oral contraceptives do not affect the P3 or other ERP components.  相似文献

Background: An open challenge of P300-based BCI systems focuses on recognizing ERP signals using a reduced number of trials with enough classification rate.Methods: Three novel methods based on Filter Bank and Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) are proposed for the recognition of P300 ERPs using a reduced number of trials. The proposed methods were evaluated with two freely available EEG datasets based on 6x6 speller and were compared with five standard methods: Mean-Amplitude, Step-Wise, Principal Component Analysis, Peak, and CCA.Results: The proposed methods outperform significantly standard algorithms for P300 identification with a maximum AUC of 0.93 and 0.98, and an average of 0.73 and 0.76, using a single trial.Conclusion: Proposed methods based on Filter Bank are robust for the identification of P300 using a reduced number of trials, which could be used in real-time BCI spellers for rehabilitation engineering.  相似文献

Purpose: Primary Sjogren syndrome (PSS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by symptoms of a dry mouth and eyes, in which other organs and systems are widely involved. Central nervous system (CNS) involvement in PSS is reported in a wide range between 2.5–60%. The reason is that the clinical picture can remain asymptomatic despite the presence of CNS involvement in the disease process. In this study, our aim was to evaluate subclinical cognitive impairment in patients with PSS by investigating P300 potential parameters.

Method: Forty-three female patients with PSS (mean age: 52.6?±?11.4 years) and 35 healthy female controls (mean age: 54.5?±?8.09 years) were included in the study. Mini-Mental State evaluations (MMSE) and brain MRI were performed in the patient and control groups. An event-related evoked potentials test (P300) was applied to those with normal MMSE.

Results: The P300 latencies of patients with PSS were significantly longer compared with the control group (p?=?.019). In patients with PSS, there was no difference in P300 parameters between ANA, Anti-SSA, Anti-SSB-positive and negative patients, and patients with or without sedimentation and CRP elevation. In addition, brain MRI revealed no statistically significant difference between patients with PSS with and without ischemic gliotic lesions (p=.48).

Conclusion: In our study, P300 latency was also found to be significantly longer in patients who had no white matter change. We believe that prolonged P300 potential latencies without associated white matter lesions in brain imaging may be associated with subclinical CNS involvement.  相似文献

Breeding values for feed intake and feed efficiency in beef cattle are generally derived indoors on high-concentrate (HC) diets. Within temperate regions of north-western Europe, however, the majority of a growing beef animal’s lifetime dietary intake comes from grazed grass and grass silage. Using 97 growing beef cattle, the objective of the current study was to assess the repeatability of both feed intake and feed efficiency across 3 successive dietary test periods comprising grass silage plus concentrates (S+C), grazed grass (GRZ) and a HC diet. Individual DM intake (DMI), DMI/kg BW and feed efficiency-related parameters, residual feed intake (RFI) and gain to feed ratio (G : F) were assessed. There was a significant correlation for DMI between the S+C and GRZ periods (r = 0.32; P < 0.01) as well as between the S+C and HC periods (r = 0.41; P < 0.001), whereas there was no association for DMI between the GRZ and HC periods. There was a significant correlation for DMI/kg BW between the S+C and GRZ periods (r = 0.33; P < 0.01) and between the S+C and HC periods (r = 0.40; P < 0.001), but there was no association for the trait between the GRZ and HC periods. There was a significant correlation for RFI between the S+C and GRZ periods (r = 0.25; P < 0.05) as well as between S+C and HC periods (r = 0.25; P < 0.05), whereas there was no association for RFI between the GRZ and HC periods. Gain to feed ratio was not correlated between any of the test periods. A secondary aspect of the study demonstrated that traits recorded in the GRZ period relating to grazing bite rate, the number of daily grazing bouts and ruminating bouts were associated with DMI (r = 0.28 to 0.42; P < 0.05 - 0.001), DMI/kg BW (r = 0.36 to 0.45; P < 0.01 - 0.001) and RFI (r = 0.31 to 0.42; P < 0.05 - 0.001). Additionally, the number of ruminating boli produced per day and per ruminating bout were associated with G : F (r = 0.28 and 0.26, respectively; P < 0.05). Results from this study demonstrate that evaluating animals for both feed intake and feed efficiency indoors on HC diets may not reflect their phenotypic performance when consuming conserved forage-based diets indoors or when grazing pasture.  相似文献

Evidence of visual-auditory cross-modal plasticity in deaf individuals has been widely reported. Superior visual abilities of deaf individuals have been shown to result in enhanced reactivity to visual events and/or enhanced peripheral spatial attention. The goal of this study was to investigate the association between visual-auditory cross-modal plasticity and speech perception in post-lingually deafened, adult cochlear implant (CI) users. Post-lingually deafened adults with CIs (N = 14) and a group of normal hearing, adult controls (N = 12) participated in this study. The CI participants were divided into a good performer group (good CI, N = 7) and a poor performer group (poor CI, N = 7) based on word recognition scores. Visual evoked potentials (VEP) were recorded from the temporal and occipital cortex to assess reactivity. Visual field (VF) testing was used to assess spatial attention and Goldmann perimetry measures were analyzed to identify differences across groups in the VF. The association of the amplitude of the P1 VEP response over the right temporal or occipital cortex among three groups (control, good CI, poor CI) was analyzed. In addition, the association between VF by different stimuli and word perception score was evaluated. The P1 VEP amplitude recorded from the right temporal cortex was larger in the group of poorly performing CI users than the group of good performers. The P1 amplitude recorded from electrodes near the occipital cortex was smaller for the poor performing group. P1 VEP amplitude in right temporal lobe was negatively correlated with speech perception outcomes for the CI participants (r = -0.736, P = 0.003). However, P1 VEP amplitude measures recorded from near the occipital cortex had a positive correlation with speech perception outcome in the CI participants (r = 0.775, P = 0.001). In VF analysis, CI users showed narrowed central VF (VF to low intensity stimuli). However, their far peripheral VF (VF to high intensity stimuli) was not different from the controls. In addition, the extent of their central VF was positively correlated with speech perception outcome (r = 0.669, P = 0.009). Persistent visual activation in right temporal cortex even after CI causes negative effect on outcome in post-lingual deaf adults. We interpret these results to suggest that insufficient intra-modal (visual) compensation by the occipital cortex may cause negative effects on outcome. Based on our results, it appears that a narrowed central VF could help identify CI users with poor outcomes with their device.  相似文献
