Multichannel recordings of visual evoked potentials (VEPs) have proved to be useful in the evaluation of visual field defects. We studied the topographic distribution of transient VEPs in 15 migraine patients (8 with visual aura and 7 without) and 15 age-matched controls during the migraine-free interval. All the subjects included in the study had normal visual fields. VEPs were recorded from 9 electrodes placed on the posterior scalp. Stimuli were full-field and hemifield reversing square wave grating patterns of medium spatial frequency (4 c/deg). The groups did not show significant differences in latencies and amplitudes of the major components (N70, P100) recorded from the midline. However, migraine patients with visual hemianopic aura showed definite asymmetries in the VEP amplitude distribution. Significantly reduced, absent or polarity-invered VEP responses were recorded ipsilateral to the side of the prodromic visual symptoms. Direct comparison of affected and unaffected hemispheres by partial field stimulation confirmed these findings. According to the VEP cortical generator theory, these abnormalities suggest a functional anomaly consistent with the clinical syndrome and detectable also in the migraine-free interval. None of the migraine patients without aura or the controls showed VEP amplitude asymmetries. We conclude that multichannel VEP recordings may discriminate between different subtypes of migraine and contribute important physiopathological information to the study of this disease.  相似文献

Chromatic and achromatic visual evoked potentials (VEP) were evaluated in 39 patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) (age 64.0 ± 8.6 years) and 43 healthy controls (age 62.8 ± 8.7 years). The following pattern-reversal checkerboard stimuli were performed: (1) achromatic with luminance contrast 86% (achr.hk.); (2) achromatic with luminance contrast 20% (achr.lk.); (3) chromatic isoluminant blue-yellow (by.); (4) chromatic isoluminant red-green (rg.). The mean latencies N70, P100, and N135 of chromatic and achromatic VEP were significantly delayed in patients with PD as compared to controls. The highest rate (41.0%) of pathological findings could be demonstrated by achromatic stimulation (luminance contrast 86%). Isolated abnormalities of chromatic VEP (in combination with normal achromatic VEP) were found in 5 (12.8%) patients. The delay of VEP-latencies was significantly correlated with the severity of motor symptoms in PD patients. We conclude that VEP are valuable tools to demonstrate a dysfunction of the visual system in PD. Although chromatic VEP are less sensitive than achromatic VEP, the combination of both will increase the diagnostic yield. Therefore, there seems to exist a variety of individual characters of visual impairment in PD.  相似文献

Fast-frequency (ca. 100–110 Hz) oscillatory potentials superimposed on waves N2 and P2 of conventional broad-band VEP were magnetically recorded in man from occipital locations in response to monocular transient flash stimulation with full-field flashes (3.5 cd s−1 m−2 intensity) and in spots (1, 1.5, or 2.0 cm in diameter). These oscillations proved replicable between- and within-subject and were phase-locked to retinal oscillatory potentials, with maximum correlation at approximately 35 ms and mean delay (as measured between the first measurable peaks) of 27.4±1.6 ms. When stimuli were in spots at increasing eccentricity (5, 15, or 25°) from foveal fixation, broad-band VEP were recorded regardless of diameter and eccentricity of spot, whereas oscillatory responses were not detectable at eccentricity of, or greater than, 15°. This observation suggests that broad-band VEP and the oscillatory response are generated by (partly) distinct neuronal populations and/or functional arrangements and that there is some functional connection between cortical oscillatory responses and stimulus-related events triggered in central retina.  相似文献

Antidopaminergic drugs delay the pattern-reversal VEP (P-VEP) and the flash VEP (F-VEP) and, in separate studies, reductions in the amplitude and increases in the latencies of scotopic ERGs have been reported. This study investigated the effects of chlorpromazine (CPZ) on the pattern ERG (P-ERG), P-VEP, flash ERGs and VEPs and oscillatory potentials (OPs). Normal volunteers (N = 15) were administered a placebo, or a single dose of CPZ 100 mg or oxazepam (OZP) 15 mg at weekly intervals, in a double-blind crossover design. A gold foil-ipsilateral ear derivation and an Oz′-Fz derivation were used for the ERG and VEP recordings, respectively. The latencies of ‘mixed’ and cone ERGs were significantly prolonged after CPZ compared to both placebo and to OZP. Amplitudes of rod- and cone-dominated ERGs were reduced following CPZ administration. All components of the OPs were significantly delayed after CPZ administration. No significant intertreatment differences were found in the F-VEP results. The P-ERG P50 peak and the P-VEP N70 and P100 peaks were significantly delayed after CPZ in the case of 28′ checks but not 55′ checks. Retinocortical times and P-ERG and P-VEP amplitudes were not significantly affected. In contrast to CPZ, the administration of OZP had virtually no significant effects compared to placebo. These findings suggest that the antidopaminergic CPZ has a primary effect on retinal electrophysiology. Similar findings have been reported in Parkinson's disease and in animal models.  相似文献

Pattern-electroretinograms (P-ERGs) and visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were simulataneously recorded in 112 normal individuals aged 20–75. Two sized checks subtending 15′ and 31′ were used as stimuli. A weighted regression analysis was used to determine which of the variables, sex or age, was significant. The latency of the a and b wave of the P-ERGs showed a progressive increase with age but no difference between sexes. The effect was statistically significant for both 15′ and 31′ checks. There was no statistically significant aging effects for VEPs elicited by 31′ checks. Aging, however, affected N70, P100, and the interpeak interval between b wave to N70 and b wave to P100 for responses to 15′ checks. Shorter VEP latencies were noted in females for both 15′ and 31′ checks. The simultaneous recording of P-ERGs and VEPs has demonstrated that aging is a major variable at the retinal level. The effects on the a and b waves are mostly due to optic changes with aging and only partially to aging changes in the neuronal retinal circuitry. The effect of aging on VEPs is different for different size stimuli. The cause is a random neuronal cell loss in the visual pathways from the optic nerve to the visual cortex as the individual ages. The difference in VEP data between sexes may be related to anatomical size and hormonal influences.  相似文献

We recorded visual evoked potentials, VEP, elicited by presentation of a reversal chess pattern; 35 healthy persons were examined. A recording electrode was in point Oz, according to the 10-20 system; dimensions of the chess pattern square fields and their contrast varied from 1.8 to 120 and from 2 to 100%, respectively. Peak latencies, PL, of the N75 component depended on the contrast of stimulus elements in a U-like manner with the minimum within a 20-25% range. The PL of the P100 component monotonically increased with a decrease in the contrast, while the dependence of the PL of N145 was complex: a trend toward a decrease with a decrease in contrast to 30%, a local maximum in about 25%, a decrease and stabilization within a 15-4% range, and a sharp increase at the minimum contrast. The amplitude of N75 decreased with decrease in contrast down to 20-25% and then stabilized; the amplitude of P100 decreased in an S-like mode, with a plateau within 25-4%. The dependence of the N145 amplitude was complex, with a plateau-like maximum at 30-15% contrast. The amplitudes of the negative VEP components, N75 and N145, increased with an increase in the square dimensions to 7.5 and then decreased. Changes in the P100 amplitude included two phases, with a local minimum within an angular dimension range of 30-15O. The PL of all analyzed components in general increased with a decrease in the angular dimension of the pattern components. The above data are discussed considering concepts on the genesis of different VEP components and on the existence of specialized channels in the visual system, which are responsible for detection of different parameters of a visual object. The complex dynamics of the PL of the analyzed VEP components and of the P100 amplitude related to variation of the contrast and angular dimensions of the elements of a complex stimulus are considered to be determined by a module principle of the organization of the elements constituting different levels of the visual system and by transformations of the receptive fields of these elements on the level of cortical modules, which are related to changes in the stimulus parameters.  相似文献

Recognition of joy, anger, and fear by face expression in humans   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Behavioral and neurophysiological characteristics of a visual recognition of emotions of joy, anger, and fear were studied in 9 young healthy men and 10 women. It was shown that these emotions were identified by subjects with different rate and accuracy; significant gender differences in recognition of anger and fear were found. Recording of visual evoked potentials (VEP) from the occipital (O1/2), medial temporal (T3/4), inferior temporal (T5/6), and frontal (F3/4) areas revealed differences (related with the type of emotion) in the latencies of P150, N180, P250, and N350 waves and in the amplitude of VEP components with the latencies longer than 250 ms. These differences were maximally expressed in T3/4 derivation. The subjects could be divided in two groups. The first group was characterized by increased VEP latencies and higher amplitudes of VEP components later than 250 ms in response to anger (in comparison with other types of emotions). These phenomena were observed in all the derivations but were most pronounced in T3/4. In the second group, only late P250 and N350 components had shorter latencies during recognition of fear. VEP amplitude variations related with the type of emotions were insignificant and were recorded in the occipital and frontal areas. The two groups of subjects also differed in psychoemotional personality characteristics. It is suggested that primary recognition of facial expression takes place in the temporal cortical areas. A possible correlation of electrophysiological indices of emotion recognition with personality traits is discussed.  相似文献

Steady-state pattern electroretinograms (PERGs) and visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in response to sinusoidal gratings (2 c/deg), sinusoidally counterphased at closely spaced temporal frequencies (TFs) between 4 and 28 Hz, were recorded from 11 patients with unilateral optic neuritis (ON; 11 affected eyes and 10 healthy fellow eyes) and 7 age-matched normal subjects (7 eyes). Amplitude and phase of responses' second harmonics were measured. Responses' apparent latencies were estimated from the rate at which phase lagged with TF. When compared to control values, mean PERG and VEP amplitudes of ON eyes were reduced (by about 0.4 log units) at both low (5–10 Hz) and high (16–20 Hz) TFs. Mean PERG amplitudes of fellow eyes were selectively reduced at low TFs (by about 0.3 log units). Mean PERG apparent latencies of both ON and fellow eyes were delayed (by 15 and 9 ms, respectively). Mean VEP apparent latency of ON eyes was delayed at both low and high TFs (by 24 and 30 ms, respectively), while that of fellow eyes was selectively delayed at high TFs (by 28 ms). The results in ON eyes indicate non-selective abnormalities of PERG and VEP generators responding at both low and high TFs. VEP TF losses may be in part accounted for by corresponding PERG losses. In the fellow eyes of patients, more selective PERG and VEP TF abnormalities may suggest differential impairment of retinal and postretinal subsystems responding better to low and high TFs (i.e. parvo-and magnocellular streams).  相似文献

We recorded the monocular and binocular VEPs to the alternation of sinusoidal gratings in order to evaluate the binocular interaction in each component of transient and steady-state VEPs in 13 normal subjects. Three spatial frequencies (1.3, 2.6 and 5.3 c/deg) with a 90% contrast were used as visual stimuli. The latencies and amplitudes of N70 and P100 of the transient VEPs were measured. The steady-state VEPs were Fourier analyzed, and both the phase and amplitude of the second (2F) and fourth (4F) harmonic responses were obtained. Binocular interaction was influenced by spatial frequency such that a binocular summation or even an inhibition occurred. For the transient VEPs, a binocular summation was more pronounced in the amplitude of N70 than in that of P100 at all spatial frequencies. There were no significant effects of binocular stimulation on latencies of N70 or P100. However, the latencies of N70 and P100 showed different spatial frequency characteristics. For the steady-state VEPs, the amplitude of 2F revealed a binocular summation that was more pronounced at 5.3 c/deg, whereas the 4F amplitude showed binocular inhibition at 2.6 and 5.3 c/deg. The 2F phase showed binocular inhibition at all spatial frequencies, whereas no such inhibition was observed in the 4F phase. These results suggest that individual components of transient and steady-state VEPs are physiologically distinct and may therefore be generated from different neuronal populations in striate cortex.  相似文献

Electroencephalograms (EEG) and visual evoked potentials (VEP) in mice were recorded to evaluate loss of cortical function during the first 30 s after euthanasia by various methods. Tracheal cannulae (for positive-pressure ventilation, PPV) and cortical surface electrodes were placed in mice anesthetized with inhaled halothane. Succinylcholine was used to block spontaneous breathing in the mice, which then underwent continuous EEG recording. Photic stimuli (1 Hz) were presented to produce VEPs superimposed on the EEG. Anesthesia was discontinued immediately before euthanasia. Compared with that obtained before euthanasia, EEG activity during the 30-s study period immediately after euthanasia was significantly decreased after cervical dislocation (at 5 to 10 s), 100% PPV-CO2 (at 10 to 15 s), decapitation (at 15 to 20 s), and cardiac arrest due to KCl injection (at 20 to 25 s) but not after administration of 70% PPV-CO2. Similarly, these euthanasia methods also reduced VEP amplitude, although 100% PPV-CO2 treatment affected VEP amplitude more than it did EEG activity. Thus, 100% PPV-CO2 treatment significantly decreased VEP beginning 5 to 10 s after administration, with near abolition of VEP by 30 s. VEP amplitude was significantly reduced at 5 to 10 s after cervical dislocation and at 10 to 15 s after decapitation but not after either KCl or 70% PPV-CO2 administration. The data demonstrate that 100% PPV-CO2, decapitation, and cervical dislocation lead to rapid disruption of cortical function as measured by 2 different methods. In comparison, 70% PPV-CO2 and cardiac arrest due to intracardiac KCl injection had less rapid effects on cortical function.  相似文献

We studied monocular pattern ERG (PERG) in 10 normal subjects and a patient with optic neuritis. No clinically significant PERG could be recorded from the occluded eye with any reference (ipsilateral ear or temple, or midfrontal), indicating that cross-contamination is not present with binocular testing. Ipsilateral temple reference minimized VEP (P100/N100) contribution to the PERG N95 which occurred with ipsilateral ear or midfrontal reference. The conclusions were confirmed by results from the patient, who had marked monocular delay of a normal amplitude P100. Twenty-four subjects were tested with monocular and binocular stimulation using an ipsilateral temple reference. There were differences in PERG latencies and amplitudes although the interside amplitude ratio showed smaller differences with binocular stimulation. Increasing check size (17, 35 and 70 min) decreased P50 and N95 latencies and increased P50 amplitude.  相似文献

We compared the visual evoked EEG potentials (VEP) elicited by presentation of a reversal chess pattern in patients with glaucoma and in the control group. Amplitudes, peak latencies of the main VEP components (N75, P100, and N145), interpeak intervals, and interpeak magnitudes were measured, and a spectral analysis of the averaged VEP was performed. In patients suffering from glaucoma, the latencies of the N75 and P100 components were greater, while the interpeak intervals P100-N145 and N75-N145 were shorter, than those in the control group. Glaucoma-related changes in the VEP spectral characteristics, in particular a drop in the spectral power of oscillations corresponding to the alpha rhythm, were observed.  相似文献

Physical exercise and the training effects of repeated practice of skills over an extended period of time may have additive effects on brain networks and functions. Various motor skills and attentional styles can be developed by athletes engaged in different sports. In this study, the effects of fast ball sports and dance training on attention were investigated by event related potentials (ERP). ERP were recorded in auditory and visual tasks in professional dancer, professional fast ball sports athlete (FBSA) and healthy control volunteer groups consisting of twelve subjects each. In the auditory task both dancer and FBSA groups have faster N200 (N2) and P300 (P3) latencies than the controls. In the visual task FBSA have faster latencies of P3 than the dancers and controls. They also have higher P100 (P1) amplitudes to non-target stimuli than the dancers and controls. On the other hand, dancers have faster latencies of P1 and higher N100 (N1) amplitude to non-target stimuli and they also have higher P3 amplitudes than the FBSA and controls. Overall exercise has positive effects on cognitive processing speed as reflected on the faster auditory N2 and P3 latencies. However, FBSA and dancers differed on attentional styles in the visual task. Dancers displayed predominantly endogenous/top down features reflected by increased N1 and P3 amplitudes, decreased P1 amplitude and shorter P1 latency. On the other hand, FBSA showed predominantly exogenous/bottom up processes revealed by increased P1 amplitude. The controls were in between the two groups.

The Authors have studied the behaviour of checkerboard pattern visual evoked potential (VEP) latencies by using different spatial frequency stimuli and different stimulating visual fields in order to demonstrate whether spatial frequency might constitute a parameter capable of exciting different retinal regions like different stimulus fields. According to the recent literature low spatial frequency stimuli generate VEP with latencies which are significantly shorter than high spatial frequency stimuli, making this method more reliable for the differentiation of macular and peripheral retinal fields.  相似文献

We studied 54 patients with Behçet's disease, 41 males and 13 females, mean age 28 years. Forty-four patients had auditory brain-stem evoked potential (BAEP) recordings, 39 had pattern reversal visual evoked potentials (VEP), 27 had median nerve somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) recordings, and 25 tibial nerve SEPs. BAEPs were abnormal in 16 patients (52%) with neurological manifestations and in 4 (31%) without, because of decreased amplitude of wave V, prolonged I–III or III–V interpeak latencies, or uncertain/absent waves III and/or V. Eleven patients (40%) with neurological symptoms and 3 patients (25%) without, had abnormal VEPs. Absent potentials, decreased amplitude, with or without prolonged P100 latency, were found in 75% of the cases, the rest had prolonged P100 latency only. Median SEPs were abnormal in 8 patients (38%) with neurological manifestations. Four patients (21%) had abnormal tibial SEPs. Decreased amplitude with or without mild slowing in central conduction was the predominant SEP abnormality. SEPs were normal in all patients without neurological symptoms. In total, 84% of patients with, and 38% of patients without, neurological symptoms had abnormalities of one or more EP modality. When used cautiously, EP studies in Behçet's disease might be helpful to separate neuro-Behçet from other disorders with similar symptomatology, to disclose subclinical CNS involvement, to evaluate and monitor CNS disease activity, and to provide objective measures of treatment response.  相似文献

Twenty healthy volunteers aged 21-48 years (10 males, 10 females) were submitted to pattern reversal visual evoked potentials with 15' and 30' checks. The recordings were repeated after 7 days to assess reliability and upper normal variability limits of the following parameters: latencies of N70, P100, N140 and peak-to peak amplitudes of N70-P100, P100-N140. Reliability was tested with intraclass correlation coefficient, which was excellent or good for all parameters. Test-retest variability limits were computed with = 0.01 for absolute latency differences and relative amplitude differences.  相似文献

To establish normal values for flash visual evoked potentials WEN in the preterm period, we analyzed 356 records from 63 neurologically normal infants (26–35 weeks gestation) followed longitudinally. Using both sleep and drowsy state recording within the same session and a mean of 5.7 weekly recording sessions per infant, we hypothesized that the prominent negative wave (N1) consisted of 2 negative components, Nla (early) and N1b (late). This hypothesis could explain the previously reported variability in VEP indices. With a precise definition of the Nla peak, we were able to establish reference ranges for Nla peak latencies at various postmenstrual ages (PMA) which, unlike those previously reported, are narrow enough to be clinically useful. From a cross-sectional analysis we found that the Nla peak latency decreased with maturation at about 4.6 msec/week between 30 and 40 weeks PMA (P > 0.001).We also analyzed the N1 wave form and demonstrated its developmental maturation during this period. There were significant decreases in the amplitudes of both the Nla and N1b peaks with maturation (P > 0.001), but the decrease of the Nla amplitude was steeper than that of N1b The N1 wave form changed from a wave in which the early peak (Nla) was higher than the late peak (Nlb) into the reverse with N1b higher than Nla. This wave change may be related to developmental processes in the visual system. Longitudinal follow-up revealed that extra-uterine life may accelerate the maturation of the N1 wave form but has no effect on the decrease of the absolute values of peak latencies.  相似文献

We recorded visual evoked responses in eight patients with Parkinson's disease, using a depth electrode either at or below the stereotactic target in the ventral part of the globus pallidus internus (GPi), which is located immediately dorsal to the optic tract. Simultaneously, scalp visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were also recorded from a mid-occipital electrode with a mid-frontal reference electrode. A black-and-white checkerboard pattern was phase reversed at 1 Hz; check size was 50 min of arc. Pallidal VEPs to full field stimulation showed an initial positive deflection, with a latency of about 50 ms (P50), followed by a negativity with a mean latency of 80 ms (N80). The mean onset latency of P50 was about 30 ms. P50 and N80 were limited to the ventralmost of the GPi and the ansa lenticularis. Left half field stimulation evoked responses in the right ansa lenticularis region while right half field stimulation did not, and vice versa. These potentials thus seemed to originate posterior to the optic chiasm. The scalp VEPs showed typical triphasic wave forms consisting of N75, P100 and N145. The location of the recording electrode in the ansa lenticularis region did not modify the scalp VEP. These results suggest that P50 and N80 are near-field potentials reflecting the compound action potentials from the optic tract. Therefore, N75 of the scalp VEPs may represent an initial response of the striate cortex but not of the lateral geniculate nucleus.  相似文献

Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were obtained from the surface of teh cat visual cortex in response to contrast reversing sinusoidal gratings. Gratings of different spatial frequency were presented either separately, using signal averaging to increase the signal-to-noise ratio, or as a spatial frequency sweep, in which spatial frequency was sequentially increased every 5 sec during a 40 sec trial (3.99 Hz) or every 3 sec during a 24 sec trial (6.65 Hz). The second harmonic amplitude- and phase-spatial frequency functions derived from averaging or from sweep trials were similar, indicating that the swept stimulus method can be used to provide a rapid and reliable measure of the VEP-spatial frequency function. Intravenous administration of physostigmine, an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, evoked a spatial frequency-dependent change in VEP amplitude. At 3.99 Hz, responses to low spatial frequencies were enhanced to a greater extent than were responses to high spatial frequency stimuli. At 6.65 Hz, responses to mid-range spatial frequencies were enhanced to a greater extent than were responses to low and high spatial frequency stimuli. VEP phase at both 3.99 and 6.65 Hz was advanced to a greater degree at the higher spatial frequencies. These results indicate that the swept spatial frequency method may be useful in studying spatial frequency-dependent pharmacological effects on the VEP and support the possibility that pharmacological disruption of the cholinergic visual system can produce such changes.  相似文献
