An increase in soluble carbohydrate occurred in December as compared to September 1985 in all structures of the seagrass Halophila engelmannii Ascherson suggesting a storage function. Protein levels in the leaves were constant (10.4–11.5% dry wt.), indicating continued growth in December. Lipid levels were low (0.1–1.5% dry wt.) Ash levels were lower in the estuarine population (23–44% dry wt.) than in the population having higher salinities (35–64%). Cellulose levels were higher in the rhizome (20.5–25.0% dry wt.) than in the leaves (11.6–14.3% dry wt.) unlike other seagrasses. Lignin did not account for more than 3.8% of the dry weight. Photosynthesis saturated at approximately 500 μE m−2 s−1 and photoinhibition occurred at higher photon flux densities. Photosynthetic responses to 12 combinations of temperature and salinity suggest broader tolerancesin the oceanic than in the estuarine population. Higher photosynthetic responses in plantscollected from both sites in December support the suggestion of continued growth.  相似文献

Activity of the enzyme glutamine synthetase (GS, EC 6.3.1.2) was determined in vitro for roots of the marine angiosperm Zostera marina L. (eelgrass) collected from a population in Great Harbor, Woods Hole, Massachusetts, U.S.A. The GS synthetase activity was lowest in roots of plants collected from the shallow region of the eelgrass bed (12.0 μmol·g−1 (fresh wt)· h−1) and increased in the mid (3.0 m, 40.3 μmol·g−1 (fresh wt)·h−1) and deep (5.0 m, 72.3 μmol·g−1 (fresh wt)·h−1) plant collection depths. GS transferase activity increased with collection depth in a similar manner: shallow, 28.6 μmol·g−1 (fresh wt)·h−1; mid, 52.0 μmol·g−1 (fresh wt)·h−1; deep, 92.8 μmol·g−1 (fresh wt)·h−1. When sediment-embedded plants were held in continuous darkness for 2 days to create extended root anoxia, root GS activities nearly doubled. In contrast, in vivo incorporation of 14C-glutamate into glutamine and protein residue remained constant or declined under short-term hypoxia and anoxia. During aerobic recovery from anoxia, root labelling of glutamine and protein increased markedly. Free amino acid patterns of eelgrass roots growing in situ were determined over a diurnal cycle. Total free amino acid content was maximal at dawn and decreased 50% by noon. In contrast, the proportion of glutamine was lowest at dawn and maximal at noon for both shallow and deep-growing plants. Despite differences in depth-specific plant sizes, root/rhizome/shoot ratios, and relative growth rates, the daily whole plant nitrogen demand of shallow and deep growing plants were equivalent. When corrected for assay temperature response, the enzyme synthetase activities measured in vitro suggest that all of the plant nitrogen assimilation requirements can be met within daylight hours during the period of peak summer biomass.  相似文献

An attempt has been made to enhance colchicine biosynthesis in Iphigenia indica L grown in vitro by exogenous supply of precursors and elicitors during culture. Addition of tyrosine at 30 mg l?1 enhanced colchicine accumulation up to 6.1 mg g?1 dry wt (control 0.99 mg g?1 dry wt), while 25 μM NiSO4 stimulated maximum colchicine accumulation (10.25 fold of control value). The colchicine accumulation was recorded as 16.25 mg g?1 dry wt when NiSO4 was added with tyrosine.  相似文献

Background

Ligia isopods are widely distributed in the Pacific rocky intertidal shores from central California to central Mexico, including the Gulf of California. Yet, their biological characteristics restrict them to complete their life cycles in a very narrow range of the rocky intertidal supralittoral. Herein, we examine phylogeographic patterns of Ligia isopods from 122 localities between central California and central Mexico. We expect to find high levels of allopatric diversity. In addition, we expect the phylogeographic patterns to show signatures of past vicariant events that occurred in this geologically dynamic region.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We sequenced two mitochondrial genes (Cytochrome Oxidase I and 16S ribosomal DNA). We conducted Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic analyses. We found many divergent clades that, in general, group according to geography. Some of the most striking features of the Ligia phylogeographic pattern include: (1) deep mid-peninsular phylogeographic breaks on the Pacific and Gulf sides of Baja peninsula; (2) within the Gulf lineages, the northern peninsula is most closely related to the northern mainland, while the southern peninsula is most closely related to the central-southern mainland; and, (3) the southernmost portion of the peninsula (Cape Region) is most closely related to the southernmost portion of mainland.

Conclusions/Significance

Our results shed light on the phylogenetic relationships of Ligia populations in the study area. This study probably represents the finest-scale phylogeographic examination for any organism to date in this region. Presence of highly divergent lineages suggests multiple Ligia species exist in this region. The phylogeographic patterns of Ligia in the Gulf of California and Baja peninsula are incongruent with a widely accepted vicariant scenario among phylogeographers, but consistent with aspects of alternative geological hypotheses and phylo- and biogeographic patterns of several other taxa. Our findings contribute to the ongoing debate regarding the geological origin of this important biogeographic region.  相似文献

Growth and oxygen consumption was measured in developing herring Clupea harengus (L.) embryos. By considering the variations in oxygen consumption with embryonic size and growth rate, an attempt was made to partition oxygen consumption between growth related and growth unrelated (i.e., “maintenance”) processes. The metabolic cost of growth was estimated as ≈ 150 ng O2 · μg dry wt tissue formed−1. This estimate compares favourably with the biochemical estimate of the costs of transport and net biosynthesis. The “maintenance” component was proportional to embryonic mass (77 ng O2 · μg−1· d−1). Over the entire embryonic period, growth processes were responsible for ≈ 25% of the cumulated oxygen consumption.  相似文献

Pleistocene glaciations have had a profound influence on the genetic structure of plant species throughout the Northern Hemisphere because of range contractions, fragmentations, and expansions. Phylogeographic studies have contributed to our knowledge of this influence in several geographic regions of North America, however, very few phylogeographic studies have examined plant species in the Sonoran, Mojave, and Peninsular deserts. In this study, we used sequence data from the chloroplast DNA psbA–trnH intergenic spacer to obtain information on phylogeographic patterns among 310 individuals from 21 populations of Encelia farinosa (“brittlebush”; Asteraceae) across its range. We applied several population and spatial genetic analyses that allowed us to interpret our data with respect to Pleistocene climate change. These analyses indicate that E. farinosa displays patterns of genetic differentiation and geographic structuring consistent with postglacial range expansion. Populations of E. farinosa are characterized by distinct haplotype lineages significantly associated with geography. Centers of genetic diversity for the species occur in southwestern Arizona, the plains of Sonora, and Baja California Sur, all of which are putative sites of glacial refugia as predicted by analyses of macrofossil and pollen data. Nested clade analysis suggests that genetic structure in E. farinosa has been affected by past fragmentation followed by range expansion. Range expansion in several locations is further supported by significant departures from neutrality for values of Fu’s FS and Tajima’s D, and mismatch analyses.  相似文献

31P-NMR spectra of bullfrog stomach smooth muscle showed peaks for creatine phosphate (4.8 μmol·g−1 wet wt.), ATP (3.6), inorganic phosphate (Pi, 2.4), phosphomonoesters (3.0) and phosphodiesters (3.3). The intracellular pH was 7.3, and calculated from the chemical shift of Pi. 1H-NMR spectra of smooth muscle yielded peaks of 2.9 for lactate, 6.6 for total creatine (creatine phosphate + creatine) and methyl protons of choline tentatively assigned to glycerolphosphorylcholine or to membrane phospholipids. Creatine phosphate and ATP decreased under anaerobic conditions, and intracellular acidification was observed with the concomitant increase in lactate. 31P saturation transfer studies showed that saturation of the γ-ATP resonance reduced the intensity of creatine phosphate to 60% of its control value, and the measured T1 value of creatine phosphate was 2.4 s with saturation. The calculated forward flux of the creatine kinase reaction (decomposition direction of creatine phosphate) was 0.77 μmol·g−1 wet wt.·s−1. The creatine kinase flux was approx. 100-times larger than the ATP turnover rate, calculated from the oxygen consumption rate with the assumption, P/O = 3. In conclusion, the creatine kinase reaction is at equilibrium in resting smooth muscle of bullfrog stomach.  相似文献

In this study, the plant node was dried in an oven (40, 50 and 60 °C), shade and temperature-controlled microwave (40, 50 and 60 °C) methods. Statistically (p<0.05), the values closest to the color values of fresh grass were determined in an oven at 40 °C drying temperature. Effective diffusion values varied between 8.85×10−8–5.65×10−6 m2 s−1. While the activation energy was 61.28 kJ mol−1 in the oven, it was calculated as 85.24 kJ mol−1 in the temperature-controlled microwave. Drying data was best estimated in the Midilli-Küçük (R2 0.9998) model oven at 50 °C. The highest SMER value was calculated as 0.0098 kg kWh−1 in the temperature-controlled microwave drying method. The lowest SEC value in the temperature-controlled microwave was determined as 24.03 kWh kg−1. It was determined that enthalpy values varied between −2484.66/−2623.38 kJ mol−1, entropy values between −162.04/−122.65 J mol−1 and Gibbs free energy values between 453335.22–362581.40 kJ mol−1. Drying rate values were calculated in the range of 0.0127–0.9820 g moisture g dry matter−1 in the temperature-controlled microwave, 0.0003–0.0762 g dry matter−1 in the oven, and 0.001–0.0058 g moisture g dry moisture matter−1 in the shade. Phenolic content 6957.79 μg GAE g−1 fw - 48322.27 μg GAE g−1 dw, flavonoid content 3806.67 mg KE L−1 fw - 22200.00 mg KE L−1 dw and antioxidant capacity 43.35 μmol TE g−1 fw - 323.47 μmol TE g−1 dw. The highest chlorophyll values were obtained from samples dried in an oven at 40 °C. According to the findings, it is recommended to dry the knotweed (Polygonum cognatum Meissn.) plant in a temperature-controlled microwave oven at low temperatures. In this study, in terms of drying kinetics and energy parameters, a temperature-controlled microwave dryer of 60 °C is recommended, while in terms of quality characteristics, oven 40 °C and shade methods are recommended.  相似文献

A study was conducted to determine soil chemistry in an uncut black spruce (Picea mariana) forest with and without the ericaceous understory shrub Kalmia angustifolia, as well as on a cut black spruce forest currently dominated by Kalmia. The organic (humus) and mineral (Ae, upper and lower B horizons) soils associated with Kalmia from uncut and cut forests, and non-Kalmia soils from uncut forest, were analyzed for selected soil properties. In general, mineral soils (B horizon) associated with Kalmia in uncut forest have lower values for organic matter (3.25%), organic nitrogen (0.66 mg·g−1), Fe3+ (95.4 μg·g−1) and Mn2+ (9 μg·g−1), and higher values for pH (4.12) and Ca2+ (27 μg·g−1) compared to non-Kalmia (organic matter, 3.43%; organic-N, 1.15 mg·g−1; Fe3+, 431 μg·g−1; Mn2+, 23.2 μg·g−1; pH, 3.14; Ca2+, 15.6 μg·g−1) and cut black spruce-Kalmia (organic matter, 3.74%; organic-N, 0.94 mg·g−1; Fe3+, 379 μg·g−1; Mn2+, 27 μg·g−1; pH, 2.87; Ca2+, 25.2 μg·g−1) forest. The high C:N ratio in Kalmia mineral soil from upper B (29.73) and lower B (identified as B+) (33.08) in uncut black spruce forest was recorded compared to non-Kalmia soils in B (18.17) and B+ (17.05) horizons in uncut black spruce forest. Phenolics leached out from Kalmia litter were lower in Kalmia associated soils than the non-Kalmia soils from the uncut forest, and Kalmia associated soils from the cut forest area. Results indicate that soils associated with Kalmia were nutrient poor particularly for nitrogen, phosphorus, iron and manganese, and provide some basis for the hypothesis that Kalmia has dominated microsites that were nutrient poor prior to Kalmia colonization.  相似文献

The components of the two major classes of natural products of the composite Encelia farinosa, sesquiterpene lactones and benzopyrans/benzofurans (chromenes), were resolved and quantified by high performance liquid chromatography. Geographic variation was examined over a range of mesic and xeric populations from California and Arizona (USA). The concentration of farinosin, a sesquiterpene lactone, varies significantly between individuals and seasonally within individuals. Ontogenetic comparisons revealed interpopulation variations within sesquiterpene lactones and chromenes. A geographic survey suggests the presence of two putative chemical races which vary in the amounts of sesquiterpene lactones and chromenes present. The adaptive significance of this quantitative variation is discussed.  相似文献

In two series of rats, the concentration of carnitine in plasma was 39.9 and 37.8 μmol/ liter, in skeletal muscle tissue 2.97 and 3.26 μmol/g dry wt and the urinary excretion 3.2 and 2.4 μmol/24 h. The renal clearance of carnitine was calculated to 88 and 76 ml/24 h. L-[Me-14C]Carnitine and DL-[Me-14C]carnitine have been administered to rats. Only labeled l-carnitine has been found on chromatographic analysis of plasma, urine, and muscle tissue. The specific radioactivity of carnitine in plasma, urine, and muscle tissue has been followed for up to 16 days. A two-compartment metabolic model has been used to interpret the result of the experiment with labeled l-carnitine and the rate constants and compartment sizes have been calculated. The total body content of carnitine was 57 μmol (about 35 μmol/100 g body wt) and the daily turnover was about 7% of the body pool. The daily synthesis of carnitine in the rat is estimated to about 2 μmol/100 g body wt.  相似文献

Secondary metabolites 2,4‐dihydroxy‐l,4‐benzoxazin‐3‐one(DIBOA) and 2‐benzoxazolinone (BOA) were quantified in different morphological parts of A. mollis. The highest DIBOA content was determined in the stamens of the flowers (57.0 umol g?1 fr. wt). Content of DIBOA in leaves decreased from approximately 28 μmol g?1 fr. wt for younger leaves (less than 4 wk old), to 3.0 μmol g?1 fr. wt. for the older ones (more than 13 wk of age). The concentration of BOA was lower than that of DIBOA in all parts of the plant (less than 1.5 μmol g?1 fr. wt) and showed a small variation. Younger leaves exhibit antifeeding activity against the larvae of Pseudaletia impuncta a native moth that feeds on cereals. These results suggest that DIBOA protects A. mollis species from phytophagous insects.  相似文献

Abstract Aims Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) of the Baja California peninsula are poorly known, with information based largely on scattered museum and literature records. We provide the first comprehensive account of ant species occurring on the peninsula, we examine distribution patterns, and we assess the ‘peninsular effect’ which predicts that species richness declines from the base to the tip of a peninsula. Location Peninsula of Baja California, Mexico. Methods Data collection involved examining, identifying and recording label data from c. 2350 series of ants. These records provide a provisional, if incomplete, species list. We applied the incidence‐based estimator, Chao‐2, to our data base of specimen records to estimate the total number of ant species on the peninsula. We assessed endemism by comparing our peninsular species list to those from adjacent states. The peninsular effect was tested by comparing genus and species level richness between the two states of Baja California, and across five latitudinal blocks. Results We document 170 native ant species in thirty‐three genera, plus six non‐native species, in Baja California. It seems likely that additional species remain to be discovered: the Chao‐2 estimator of species richness, at 206.0 species, is about 20% higher than our observed species richness. About 30% of the species and 20% of the genera are restricted within Baja California to the relatively mesic California Floristic Province of north‐western Baja California. Nearly all of these species also occur in California. Forty‐seven species (27.6%) are peninsula endemics. Using our entire data set, the peninsular effect appears to be strong, with about twice as many species in the northern state of Baja California than are recorded from the southern state of Baja California Sur; the ratio of genera is 33 to 24. However, this effect becomes weak at the species level and absent at the genus level when minimizing habitat effects by omitting species restricted to the California Floristic Province. At a finer scale, across latitudinal blocks of about 1.9°, the number of species declines towards central portions of the peninsula and then increases in the Cape Region. Nine ant species display strongly disjunct distributions, and these occur in two general patterns: peninsula disjuncts and peninsula–mainland disjuncts. Main conclusions The Baja California peninsula supports a diverse and distinctive ant fauna, with the proportion of endemic species similar to that displayed by plants. Patterns of species and genus richness across the five latitudinal blocks provide poor support for the peninsular effect. Moreover, habitat diversity, especially that related to topographic relief, appears to be the most important factor affecting the gradient of ant species richness in Baja California. Additional collections are needed to develop a more complete species list and to determine the boundaries and status of many species. Nevertheless, the present data base provides a useful starting point for understanding the evolution of ant assemblages in Baja California and for comparison with peninsular patterns in other taxa.  相似文献

Each component of the energy budget (ingestion, egestion,somatic growth, reproductive investment, respiration, excretion, and mucus production) was measured for Haliotis tuberculata L. held at 15°C in a 12-h light: 12-h dark regime. Ulva lactuca L. was used as the food source throughout, and the budget was assessed over the whole size range of the animal. Ingestion rates ranged from 1.94 to 997.2 cal·animal−1·day−1 in 0.01 to 50 g dry wt (3.71 × 10−3 to 17.3 g dry flesh wt) animals, respectively. The major component of the energy budget was somatic growth (37.5% of I) in a 0.01-g dry wt animal while it was respiration (31.1% of I) in a 50-g dry wt animal. Mucus production formed a large part of the budget (from 23.3% of I in a 0.01-g dry wt animal to 29.l% of I in a 50-g dry wt animal). Scope for growth, I − (E + R + U + M), was calculated as ranging from 24.5% of ingestion in a 50-g dry wt animal to 36.8% in a 0.01-g dry wt animal.Each component was measured independently and allometric relationships with animal dry weight calculated. Exponents ranged from 0.60 (somatic growth) to 1.06 (reproductive investment).The calorific value of food was 3419 cal·g dry wt−1 and for faeces was 2817 cal·g dry wt−1. Absorption as a percentage of ingestion in terms of dry weight ranged from 78% for 95-mm length animals (50 g dry wt) to 81% in 6-mm animals (0.01-g dry wt−1). Gross and net growth efficiencies (K1 and K2) were calculated on an energy basis and both were logarithmically related to animal dry weight.  相似文献

Vitamin analysis was carried out on five microalgae used in aquaculture:Tetraselmis suecica, Isochrysis galbana, Pavlova lutheri, Skeletonema costatum andChaetoceros calcitrans and one macroalga,Sargassum muticum, which is invasive on the Atlantic shores of France. Both liposoluble (provitamin A, E, K) and hydrosoluble (B1, B2, B6, B12, C, PP) vitamins were quantified. For most of them, greater amounts were obtained in the algal products than in the usual sources. On a dry weight basis,Tetraselmis suecica contained 4280 μg g?1 provitamin A and 6323 μg g?1 vitamin E,Pavlova lutheri 1162 μg g?1 vitamin B12 and 837 μg g?1 vitamin C,Isochrysis galbana 2690 μg g?1 vitamin PP and 183 μg g?1 vitamin B6, andSkeletonema costatum 710 μg g?1 vitamin B1.  相似文献

Characteristics of photosynthesis and respiration of bladelets were compared between Ecklonia cava Kjellman sporophytes growing in a warmer temperate locality (Tei, Kochi Pref., southern Japan) and in a cooler temperate locality (Nabeta, Shizuoka Pref., central Japan). Photosynthesis and respiration were measured with a differential gas-volumeter (Productmeter). In photosynthesis-light curves at 20°C, the rate of net photosynthesis was almost the same at light intensities lower than 25 μmol m−2 s−1 and the light-saturation occurred at 200–400 μmol m−2s−1 in plants of both localities. The light-saturated net photosynthetic rates were higher in winter and spring than in summer and autumn in both plants. The optimum temperature for net photosynthesis at 400 μmol m−2s−1 was 27°C throughout the year in the Tei plant and 25–27°C in the Nabeta plant. The decrease of net photosynthetic rates in the supraoptimal temperature range up to 29°C was sharper in winter and spring than in summer and autumn in both plants, being smaller in the Tei plant than in the Nabeta plant in all seasons. The dark respiration rate always increased with water temperature rise in both plants. No clear differences were found in the dark respiration rate between Tei and Nabeta plants except that when measured against dry weight, the Tei plant showed a slightly lower rate as compared with the Nabeta plant.  相似文献

Marina victoriae andM. brevis are newly described species from the southern Baja California peninsula, Mexico. The former is a perennial herb locally abundant in the eroded hillsides at the foothills of Sierra de la Victoria, where an oak woodland and a dry tropical forest meet. The latter is an elusive ephemeral inhabiting a narrow strip of land between the mangroves and the desert scrub on an island in the Gulf of California. These two new species belong to the seriesChrysorrhizae, a group native to the Gulf of California basin.  相似文献

A high-performance liquid chromatographic method based on a gradient elution and the application of core–shell type stationary phase was developed to estimate contents of sesquiterpene lactones and monoterpenoid thymol derivatives in the tissues of Telekia speciosa. The detection and quantification limits of the analytes were 0.05–0.29 μg ml−1 and 0.15–0.89 μg ml−1, respectively. Calibration curves showed good linearities (R2 > 0.9996) within the test ranges. Intra-day and inter-day precisions were satisfactory with RSD < 2.6%. The recoveries of the standards tested ranged from 96 to 107%. The overall time of analysis was less than 35 min. Using the method, seven major sesquiterpene lactones and one thymol derivative were quantified in different organs of the plant and plants of different origin. Aerial parts of T. speciosa accumulated miscellaneous sesquiterpene lactones, mainly of guaiane, pseudoguaiane, xanthane and eudesmane type, whereas roots of the plant contained almost exclusively isoalantolactone – an eudesmanolide of antiproliferative and anti-inflammatory activity (up to 1.2% dry weight). Flowers of T. speciosa proved to be an excellent source of xanthanolide – 8-epi-tomentosin (0.16–0.94%). Provenience of the plant material strongly influenced its biosynthetic potential.  相似文献
