Lipoptena cervi (Linnaeus, 1758), Lipoptena fortisetosa Maa, 1965, Hippobosca equina Linnaeus, 1758, and Pseudolynchia canariensis (Macquart, 1840) (Diptera: Hippoboscidae) are haematophagous ectoparasites that infest different mammal and bird species and occasionally attack humans. They are known for the health implications they have as vectors of pathogens to humans and animals, and for the injuries they inflict on their host's skin. This study focused on the morphological structures evolved by parasites in terms of their biology and the different environment types that they inhabit. To this aim, we examined four hippoboscid species, as well as their hosts' fur (ungulate and horse), and feather (pigeon) through light and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) observations in order to highlight the main morphological features that evolved differently in these flies and to explain the effect of hosts' fur/feather microhabitats on the morphological specializations observed in the investigated ectoparasites. The studied species showed main convergent characters in mouthparts while remarkable differences have been detected on the antennal sensillar pattern as well as on the leg acropod that displayed divergent characters evolved in relation to the host.  相似文献

One reason to measure cross-sectional structural properties of primate long bones is to define mechanically relevant complexes of traits that describe the adaptation of bone to different biomechanical environments. This can be effectively accomplished when congeneric species having different postural and locomotor behaviors are compared. This paper compares the cross-sectional geometry of the femur and humerus in three behaviorally different macaque species as a basis for defining such patterns. Cross-sectional moments of inertia in the standard anatomical planes were calculated at five locations along the diaphyses of the femur and humerus in Macaca fascicularis, M. nemestrina, and M. mulatta. The data suggest that the "barrel-shaped" femur is associated with behaviors for which long limbs and small body size are an asset. This may be associated with, but is not restricted to, leaping behaviors. The data also suggest that structural rigidity of the femur and humerus is greater per unit body weight in primates that spend significant amounts of time in terrestrial environments than in those that are more restricted to climbing in arboreal environments.  相似文献

Arboreal and semi-arboreal mammals have remarkably diverse positional behavior and associated morpho-functional adaptations related to the three-dimensional nature of their arboreal habitat. In this context, we investigated the positional behavior of captive Siberian chipmunks (Tamias sibiricus), small bodied semi-arboreal sciurids, in an aviary-type wire-mesh cage containing both terrestrial and arboreal supports. We sampled four adult individuals during a five-month period using focal animal sampling every 30 s. Results showed that animals preferred 8–10 cm horizontal supports and always avoided vertical supports. Locomotion occurred on both terrestrial and 8–10 cm arboreal supports whereas postural behavior occurred primarily on 8–10 cm arboreal supports. Quadrupedal walk dominated during locomotion, and occurred primarily on terrestrial horizontal supports, as is observed for other squirrels. The predominance of quadrupedal locomotion is consistent with the postcranial morphology of chipmunks. In contrast, clawed locomotion occurred on wire mesh and on >13 cm arboreal vertical supports. Finally, pronograde and orthograde sitting, both on 8–10 cm arboreal supports and on terrestrial supports, were the predominant postures, implying general predisposition to selection of stable postures on stable supports for food item manipulation and ingestion.  相似文献

植物通过每隔几年产生大量种子的丰年策略提高贮食动物传播种子效率,但人为采摘活动降低了种子的可利用量,从而影响贮食动物行为及种群动态。为研究红松球果采摘如何通过降低松果可利用量而影响贮食动物行为,我们基于黑龙江凉水自然保护区2003-2012年红松结实量和采摘量的变化,比较分析了结实大小年间松鼠贮点大小、贮点深度、贮食密度和贮藏量、松鼠花鼠种群以及2010年和2011年花鼠洞穴贮藏量的差异。结果显示:结实大年松鼠的平均贮点大小显著高于小年,大贮点比例增加,贮食密度和贮藏量也明显高于结实小年,但随着结实量的增大,球果采摘量增加,使松果可利用量减少,由此结实大年2011年松鼠贮食密度并未随结实量增加而增加,反而低于2003年和2008年,松鼠遇见率也没有在该结实大年有所增长。而花鼠种群和洞穴松籽贮藏量在结实大年和小年间没有显著差异。研究表明红松球果采摘对松果可利用量和松鼠贮食行为有较大影响,应合理确定大年的采摘量以保证贮食动物的食物丰度,维系红松生态系统健康。  相似文献

Summary The partitioning of energy in three species of nematode, Paroigolaimella bernensis, Diplogasteritus nudicapitatus and Rhabditis curvicaudata, from a polysaprobic environment is considered. Temperature was shown to have a profound impact on the rate at which these organisms obtained food resources and on the partitioning of energy into growth, reproduction and maintenance. Declining temperature resulted in a reduction in energy consumption and in production and maintenance costs. Absorption efficiencies were relatively low, rarely exceeding 20% and lying on average between 5–15%. Net production efficiencies varied throughout the life-cycle, but attained maximum levels of 70–80%. Females achieved higher net production efficiency than males. The physiology and ecological implications are discussed.  相似文献

The spider genus Dysdera is considered to comprise specialist isopod feeders, although the degree of specialization varies between species, depending on morphological (shape of chelicerae), behavioural (attack tactics) and metabolic (food quality of prey) adaptations. Dysdera has radiated extensively in the Canary Islands (currently 47 endemic species are described) and codistributed species have different cheliceral shapes and body sizes indicating different feeding niches. In the present study, we investigate the existence of metabolic adaptations to feeding on isopods by three endemic species (Dysdera insulana Simon, Dysdera macra Simon and Dysdera verneaui Simon) from Tenerife. We hypothesize that there is enhanced extraction efficiency of fundamental macronutrients from isopods compared with control prey in species with special morphological and behavioural adaptations for this prey type. We measure quantitatively spider growth, dry mass consumption, lipid and nitrogen consumption, and calculate growth efficiency and efficiency of utilization of dry mass, lipid and nitrogen. The results show that all three species are able to utilize both prey types, indicating that none of them are strict isopod specialist. Dysdera insulana shows enhanced growth efficiency and D. macra shows enhanced nitrogen extraction efficiency compared with D. verneaui when feeding on Porcellio rather than on Musca. Both traits indicate likely adaptations for the utilization of isopods. Spider species, sex and prey type all affect lipid and nitrogen extraction efficiencies, indicating that spiders do not simply extract nutrients in the proportions available. The results support the hypothesis that adaptations for enhanced digestion of focal prey evolve in species that already have adaptations for enhanced capture success.  相似文献

Crustaceans have been successfully employed to study legged locomotion for decades. Most studies have focused on either forwards-walking macrurans, or sideways-walking brachyurans. Libinia emarginata is a Majoid crab (Brachyura) and as such belongs to the earliest group to have evolved the crab form from homoloid ancestors. Unlike most brachyurans, Libinia walks forwards 80% of the time. We employed standard anatomical techniques and motion analysis to compare the skeleton, stance, and the range of motion of the legs of Libinia to the sideways-walking green shore crab (Carcinus maenas), and to the forwards-walking crayfish (Procambarus clarkii). We found animals tended to have greater ranges of motion for joints articulating in the preferred direction of locomotion. Leg segments proximal to such joints were comparatively longer. Thorax elongation, leg length and placement at rest also reflected walking preference. Comparative studies of walking in Libinia and other brachyurans may shed light on the neuroethology of legged locomotion, and on the anatomical and physiological changes necessary for sideways-walking in crustaceans.  相似文献

Three features of the heat shock response, reorganization of protein expression, intracellular accumulation of trehalose, and alteration in unsaturation degree of fatty acids were investigated in the thermophilic fungus Chaetomium thermophile and compared to the response displayed by a closely related mesophilic species, C. brasiliense. Thermophilic heat shock response paralleled the mesophilic response in many respects like (i) the temperature difference observed between normothermia and the upper limit of translational activity, (ii) the transient nature of the heat shock response at the level of protein expression including both the induction of heat shock proteins (HSPs) as well as the repression of housekeeping proteins, (iii) the presence of representatives of high-molecular-weight HSPs families, (iv) intracellular accumulation of trehalose, and finally (v) modifications in fatty acid composition. On the other hand, a great variability between the two organisms was observed for the proteins expressed during stress, in particular a protein of the HSP60 family that was only observed in C. thermophile. This peptide was also present constitutively at normal temperature and may thus fulfil thermophilic functions. It is shown that accumulation of trehalose does not play a part in thermophily but is only a stress response. C. thermophile contains less polyunsaturated fatty acids at normal temperature than C. brasiliense, a fact that can be directly related to thermophily. When subjected to heat stress, both organisms tended to accumulate shorter and less unsaturated fatty acids.  相似文献

Three entosymbiotic graffillid rhabdocoels (Paravortex scrobiculariae, P. cardii and Graffilla buccinicola) from marine bivalve and gastropod molluscs show several physiological adaptations to their life-style which are intimately related to the nutritional physiology and ecology of their respective hosts.All three species feed on their hosts' partially digested food plus the cellular debris released at the end of the hosts' own digestive cycle. G. buccinicola supplements this diet by actively removing intact cells from the host's digestive epithelium. Host enzymes, ingested with the food, are utilized for digestion within the flatworms' gut; there is concomitant reduction in the types and amounts of endogenous enzymes and the gastrodermal gland cells characteristically found in free-living species are absent.Food reserves in the three species consist mainly of glycogen, following the pattern seen in other entosymbiotic flatworms (Turbellaria, Digenea, Cestoda); in P. scrobiculariae this primary adaptation, believed to be linked in all entosymbiotes to the ready availability of food and to high fecundity, probably has a secondary function, in relation to anaerobic respiration, of the type found in cestodes.Other adaptive features, closely correlated with host ecology, are the occurrence of a physiologically active haemoglobin in the brain and pharynx of P. scrobiculariae and, in this species and P. cardii, the differential occurrence and distribution of dehydrogenase systems concerned with aerobic respiration (Krebs cycle), the pentose phosphate shunt and anaerobic respiration (glycolysis). P. scrobiculariae and P. cardii are viviparous and the normal provision of yolk for embryonic nutrition is supplemented by direct passage of materials to the later larvae from the parental gut, thus facilitating extended development of the larva until its birth as an immature miniature adult.  相似文献

Acanthamoeba species are free-living amoebae found in a range of environments. Within this genus, a number of species are recognized as human pathogens, potentially causing Acanthamoeba keratitis, granulomatous amoebic encephalitis, and chronic granulomatous lesions. In this study, 60 water samples were taken from four thermal spring recreation areas in southern Taiwan. We detected living Acanthamoeba spp. based on culture-confirmed detection combined with the molecular taxonomic identification method. Living Acanthamoeba spp. were detected in nine (15%) samples. The presence or absence of Acanthamoeba spp. in the water samples depended significantly on the pH value. The most frequently identified living Acanthamoeba genotype was T15 followed by T4, Acanthamoeba spp., and T2. Genotypes T2, T4, and T15 of Acanthamoeba, are responsible for Acanthamoeba keratitis as well as granulomatous amoebic encephalitis, and should therefore be considered a potential health risk associated with human activities in thermal spring environments.  相似文献

Abstract. Two new ectoparasities of butterflies from Africa are described: Forcipomyia (Trichohelea) monoplectron sp.n. and F.collinsi sp.n. A key for the identification of the African species ofthe subgenus Trichohelea is given. The extraodinary distribution of F.collinsi in Africa and South America is tentatively correlated with the distribution of migratory Rhopalocera. An hypothesis is presented for the functional significance of the tarsal claw modifications in this group of parasites.  相似文献

Dispersal morphology based on the myrmecochorous adaptations for predator avoidance of sevenCorydalis species including two varieties are investigated in southern Japan. Three types of myrmecochory were distinguished: myrmecochory with autochory (diplochory), the explosive ejection of seeds followed by ant transportation; myrmecochory with vegetative reproduction, seed-transportation by ants and reproduction by tuber; and pure myrmecochory, seed-transporting by ants only. Diplochory occurs in one winter annual plant, which has explosive capsules, a smooth seed surface, a small elaiosome, long pedicels and large bracts. Myrmecochory with vegetative reproduction occurs in two perennials that reproduce by tuber, although they also produce a small number of seeds with a medium-sized elaiosome. the pedicels and bracts are medium in size. Pure myrmecochory occurs in five annuals or biennials that are characterized by a rough seed surface with a large elaiosome, comparatively high seed production, short pedicels and only small bracts. Diplochory is exhibited by only one species distributed widely throughout Japan. Myrmecochory with vegetative reproduction is exhibited by species mainly distributed in cool-temperate northern Japan, while true myrmecochory is exhibited by the majority ofCorydalis species in warm-temperate Japan.  相似文献

A technique based on homogenisation of rapidly frozen tissue was used to investigate the regulation of intracellular pH (pHi) in freshwater and marine fish from diverse environmental temperatures. The following species were held at ambient temperatures of ca. 1°C (Notothenia coriiceps; Antarctica), 5°C (Pleuronectes platessa, Myoxocephalus scorpius; North Sea), and 26°C (Oreochromis niloticus; African lakes). The effects of seasonal acclimatisation to 4, 11 and 18°C were also examined in rainbow trout in the winter, autumn and summer, respectively. Extracellular (whole blood) pH (pHe) did not follow the constant relative alkalinity relationship, where pH+=pOH for any particular temperature, over a range of 1–26°C (overall δpHeT=0.009±0.002 U °C−1; P<0.001), apparently being regulated by ionic fluxes and ventilation. Intracellular pH (pHi) was also regulated independently of pN(=0.5 pK water) in all species of fish examined. The inverse relationship between pHi and environmental temperature gave an overall δpHiT of −0.010±0.001 U °C−1 (for both white and red muscle) and −0.004±0.003 U °C−1 (cardiac muscle). However, between 1 and 11°C δpHiT was much higher (P<0.001), −0.022±0.003 U °C−1 (white muscle) and −0.022±0.004 U °C−1 (red muscle). The possible adaptive roles for these different acid–base responses to environmental temperature variation among tissues and species, and the potential difficulties of estimating pHi, are discussed.  相似文献

  • 6.6. It was concluded that sphincters of anemones from different environments have a morphology and a physiological response adapted to the milieu.
