Butterfly migration from and to peninsular Florida   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract.
  • 1 Migrating butterflies were monitored with traps for 10 years at a site in north peninsular Florida, to determine seasonal and annual variation in numbers and directions of flight.
  • 2 In the spring, 81–96% of the principal migrants, Phoebis sennae (L.), Agraulis vanillae (L.), Precis coenia (Hübner) and Urbanus proteits (L.), flew northward; in the autumn, 86–95% flew southward.
  • 3 Estimated mean net numbers of these four species flying northward in spring across each ENE-WSW metre were 3, 6, 69 and <1 respectively; numbers flying southward in autumn were 222, 413, 37 and 146.
  • 4 During a 5-year period, the ratio of highest to lowest seasonal migration for a species did not exceed 9.3.
  • 5 The average median date of spring migration was 27 March for P.sennae, 23 April for P.coenia, and 12 May for A.vanillae. The average median date of autumn migration was 2–5 October except for U.proteus, whose average date was 14 October.
  • 6 The autumn migratory period, as measured by the duration of the middle half of migration, was about 2 weeks in P.coenia and about 4 weeks in the other three species.
  • 7 Compared to previously reported butterfly migrations, the ones studied here were notably uniform in magnitude and regular in timing.
  • 8 These and other data suggest that 4 million or more of these butterflies migrate northward from peninsular Florida almost every spring and that 40 million or more migrate southward to peninsular Florida almost every autumn.

Ormia depleta(Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tachinidae), a South American fly that homes on the calling songs of its hosts, was brought from Piracicaba, Brazil; colonized; and released in Florida for the biological control ofScapteriscusspp. mole crickets. It became established at some release sites and rapidly spread through most of peninsular Florida. The seasonal distributions of phonotactic females in Florida differed from the single summer peak recorded at Rio Claro and Piracicaba, Brazil (23° S). Near Bradenton (27° N), spring and fall peaks with a summer hiatus were quickly established and remain evident. At two sites near Gainesville (30° N), a strong fall peak and a modest-to-none spring peak developed. Peaks of phonotactic females seem to follow times of peak host availability and sometimes coincide with minima of host availability. Limits to geographical expansion ofO. depletaare poorly understood. At Gainesville, the site of earliest introduction, establishment was rapid and soundtrap catches increased for the first 3 years, exceeding 1000 per year at one site. Catches then declined for 3 years, almost reaching zero in 1994. On the other hand, annual sound-trap catches ofO. depletaat Bradenton exceeded 1000 in <2 years and have remained above that level for 5 years. Winters in Gainesville are more severe than those in Bradenton, but minimum winter temperatures in Gainesville were substantially lower duringO. depleta's increase than during its decline. Perhaps mild winters cause the flies to become active early—only to starve for lack of adequate winter nectar sources.O. depletamay yet spread to the northern limits of itsScapteriscushosts as present populations adapt to new environments. Or farther spread may require that new strains be introduced from more southerly sites in South America.  相似文献

Lilioceris cheni is a successful biological control agent on the invasive yam, Dioscorea bulbifera in many areas in Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Louisiana. Two biotypes are available for release and come from significantly different centres of origin. The Nepalese biotype was collected at higher altitude and latitude sites, whereas the Chinese biotype was collected at slightly lower latitude and lower altitude. We hypothesised that Nepalese beetles would survive winter better in north Florida and that Chinese beetles would overwinter better in subtropical south Florida. We established sites in Homestead, Fort Pierce, Gainesville and Tallahassee, Florida to gauge the overwintering survival of each biotype. Beetles that overwintered in each site for one to three seasons were collected and followed to assess their reproductive capacity. In the final year of the experiment, we extracted fat bodies to determine effects of biotype and site. Nepalese beetles overwintered significantly better overall. Beetles survived better in the first study year (2013–2014). Both biotypes reproduced very well after surviving winter and beetles in Fort Pierce survived better than beetles in other regions and maintained a higher fat body. Nepalese beetles may have a wider ecological envelope – a decided advantage for a large region such as peninsular Florida. We suggest that current release programmes incorporate Nepalese beetles into their protocol to increase overwinter survival and establishment.  相似文献

Spartina alterniflora, salt marsh cordgrass, is the dominant angiosperm of a large majority of regularly flooded marshes of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States. In Louisiana, this species often occurs in two distinct zones: a more productive streamside site (adjacent to tidal creeks), and a less productive and sparsely populated inland area. Reddish-brown deposits are present on the roots of streamside Spartina and visually absent from the roots of inland plants. A study of streamside roots using scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis demonstrated that the coatings are restricted to the outer cell wall of the epidermis and are composed primarily of iron. Roots of inland plants have minor iron deposits. Citrate-dithionite extraction of the coatings and subsequent atomic absorption spectrophotometric analysis confirmed these deposits to be iron, although some manganese was present. Approximately 50 times more iron was found on streamside roots compared to roots from inland plants. These results indicate a better developed oxidized rhizosphere associated with streamside Spartina roots than the inland and, hence, the potential for a more favorable environment in which nutrient uptake may proceed.  相似文献

Germination response following various periods of cold treatment and seedling response to temperature, daylength, and salinity were studied for several Atlantic and Gulf coasts populations of Uniola paniculata L. Results indicated that Atlantic coast Florida populations did not require cold treatment prior to germination at 95–65 F, but that populations from Virginia and North Carolina did. Gulf coast populations exhibited a germination response intermediate between those just mentioned. Seedling studies revealed that alternating diurnal thermoperiods with daytime temperatures of 80 F and above produced good vegetative growth in all populations with little preference for either short- or long-day conditions. Gulf coast populations produced the most biomass under all treatment conditions. Seedlings from a North Carolina and a Florida population indicated no difference in substrate salt tolerance. Salt tolerance was reduced in the higher temperature thermoperiod for both populations. Seedlings from these two populations produced more biomass in a salt spray treatment than in substrate salinity treatments.  相似文献

The Temperate Broad-Leaved Evergreen Forest (TBEF) zone is centered in peninsular Florida. It is characterized by mainly nontropical taxa that form an evergreen dicot forest, often with aSabal palm in the canopy, in which deciduous dicot trees are present but rarely become local dominants. The Madrean-Tethyan floristic affinities of this life zone are briefly discussed, as is plant endemism, and a recommendation is given for recognizing it as a separate phytochorion, the Central Floridian Subprovince, in the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains Province of southeastern North America. Also recommended for separate status is the Apalachicolan Subprovince, in the panhandle of Florida and adjacent Georgia and Alabama. These recommendations follow an earlier recognition of the floristic uniqueness of both areas (Greller, 2000). Three physiographical regions in the TBEF are recognized: Peninsular Florida (including the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal regions); the Atlantic Outer Coastal Plain, Sea Islands and Outer Banks; and the Gulf Coastal Shores, Islands, Prairies and Marshes (from panhandle Florida west to Louisiana and Texas). Following Heinrich Walter’s zonobiome classification system, one zonobiome and two zonoecotones are recognized for the TBEF region. Following a literature review, a classification of TBEF ligneous, mainly arborescent, vegetation types is given. The article ends with brief discussions of some lowland and a number of montane arborescent vegetation types of the Greater Antilles and of Baja California related to TBEF flora and vegetation.  相似文献

The spatial and temporal distributions of the epiphytic diatom flora on Thalassia testudinum was described within the Florida Bay estuary and at one Atlantic site east of the Florida Keys over a 1-year period. Species of the genus Mastogloia dominated the epiphytic diatom flora (82 out of 332 total species). Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling (NMDS) and Analysis of Similarity (ANOSIM) revealed four distinct spatial assemblages and two temporal assemblages. Eastern and western Florida Bay assemblages were identified within the estuary. The eastern diatom assemblage was characterized by high relative abundances of Brachysira aponina and Nitzschia liebetruthii, while the western assemblage was characterized by the abundance of Reimerothrix floridensis, particularly during summer. Two diverse and distinct marine assemblages, one located in the Gulf of Mexico along the western edge of Florida Bay and the other behind the Florida reef tract in the Atlantic Ocean, were also identified. Analysis of the spatial distribution of diatoms and water quality characteristics within Florida Bay suggest that these assemblages may be structured by salinity and nutrient availability, particularly P. The Gulf of Mexico and the western Florida Bay assemblages were associated with higher water column salinities and TP concentrations and lower DIN concentrations and TN:TP ratios relative to the eastern Florida Bay assemblage. The temporal variation in diatom assemblages was associated with water temperature, though temporal indicator species were few relative to the number of spatial indicators. In strict symbiotic associations, the genetic structure of the symbiont often mirrors that of its host, with interesting implications for population dynamics and phylogeography. An unresolved case of symbiotic specificity and phylogeographic consequence is the relationship between the marine triclad Bdelloura candida and its host, the American horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus. A recent study by Riesgo et al. (2017, Marine Biology, 164, 111) identified a strong genetic break between populations of B. candida in the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean but had minimal sampling around the Florida peninsula such that the exact location of the boundary zone was not specified. To solve this, a comprehensive analysis of 16S rRNA and ITS2 genetic markers was conducted from new collections around the Florida peninsula. A clear and significant genetic break was identified between populations of supposed B. candida between Cumberland Island, Georgia, and Mosquito Lagoon, Florida. This genetic break establishes two cryptic lineages, an Atlantic population as far south as Georgia and a Floridian population inclusive of the entire peninsula and Gulf of Mexico, potentially due to niche partitioning of the unique intertidal habitats of its horseshoe crab hosts in Florida. This result directly refutes the previous hypothesis that a population break exists between the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, and instead matches the genetic break of its host. Furthermore, a third cryptic lineage was identified in Key West. Overall, this work demonstrates the challenges in maintaining genetic connections between populations of both B. candida and L. polyphemus across their distributions, and poses meaningful implications for both species in the larger context of marine conservation and biodiversity.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. If synoptic-scale wind systems are important in determining long-distance movements of butterflies, a portion of the variation in daily counts of migrants at a site should be explainable by prior winds.
2. Using special flight traps near Gainesville, Florida, U.S.A., from 29 August until 12 November 1978, we made replicated, continuous counts of four migrant species: Phoebis sennae, Urbanus proteus, Agraulis vanillae and Precis coenia .
3. Significant SSE-ward flights occurred for one or more of the four species on 47 days between 5 September and 6 November (Fig. 1).
4. Seasonal changes in numbers of migrants were similar for the four species (Fig. 1). Median fall migrants were trapped between 22 September ( A.vanillae ) and 1 October ( U.proteus and P.sennae ).
5. Daily fluctuations in total numbers of migrants were largely attributable to local weather, viz temperature, wind speed and cloud cover (Fig. 2).
6. Neither local wind direction (Fig. 3) nor back-tracking the positions of air parcels (Fig. 4) helped explain the daily fluctuations.
7. The characteristic autumn weather patterns of south-eastern U.S.A. and the day-to-day steadiness of the numbers of migrants are incompatible with the hypothesis that synoptic-scale wind systems are important in determining butterfly migrations through Gainesville, Florida, in the autumn.  相似文献

Shallow subtidal populations of sea anemones occupying hard substrates along the California (Pacific) and Gulf of Maine (Atlantic) coasts of the USA are compared. The diversity of anemones in the southern Gulf of Maine to 35 m is low (4 species) in contrast to similar habitats in California (at least 11 species), but parallel patterns of individual size, distribution and predation impacts occur. Water motion influences depth distribution and size, while predation affects size, population structure and habitat selection. The nudibranch Aeolidia papillosa exerts a similar pressure on population structure in some anemone species in both areas as a size selective predator. The seastar Dermasterias imbricata appears to magnify the selective pressure for large size in the eastern Pacific coastal zone. Interspecific aggression of anemones determines some distribution patterns in areas of overlap.  相似文献

Cymbula nigra is the largest limpet in the Mediterranean. It has been listed since 1993, as an ‘endangered species’. Its historical range in the Mediterranean includes the southern Spanish, the Moroccan and the Algerian coasts. Recent observations have confirmed its proliferation in southern Spain and its progression along the European and North African Mediterranean coasts. Field surveys carried out along the Tunisian coasts during winter 2011 revealed the presence of this species in the Gulf of Tunis and the Cap Bon. The finding of C. nigra represents a range extension possibly enhanced by the current global warming, as it is a ‘warm‐water species’. The absence of records in previous surveys to the same sampling sites (2006–2007), together with the small sizes recorded in 2011, confirms the recent installation of the species. The limpet was recorded in areas spared of pollution, characterized by a predominant influence of the Atlantic current, and also showed a preference for steep cliffs exposed to strong waves. This is the first population study of this endangered gastropod outside of its original range of distribution. The determination of the ecological characteristics of newly colonized habitats might serve as a starting point for the establishment of appropriate recommendations for its conservation.  相似文献

Most of the known wintering areas of Piping Plovers (Charadrius melodus) are along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States and into Mexico, and in the Caribbean. However, 1066 threatened/endangered Piping Plovers were recently found wintering in The Bahamas, an area not previously known to be important for the species. Although representing about 27% of the birds counted during the 2011 International Piping Plover Winter Census, the location of their breeding site(s) was unknown. Thus, our objectives were to determine the location(s) of their breeding site(s) using molecular markers and by tracking banded individuals, identify spring and fall staging sites, and examine site fidelity and survival. We captured and color‐banded 57 birds in January and February 2010 in The Bahamas. Blood samples were also collected for genetic evaluation of the likely subspecies wintering in The Bahamas. Band re‐sightings and DNA analysis revealed that at least 95% of the Piping Plovers wintering in The Bahamas originated on the Atlantic coast of the United States and Canada. Re‐sightings of birds banded in The Bahamas spanned the breeding distribution of the species along the Atlantic coast from Newfoundland to North Carolina. Site fidelity to breeding and wintering sites was high (88–100%). Spring and fall staging sites were located along the Atlantic coast of the United States, with marked birds concentrating in the Carolinas. Our estimate of true survival for the marked birds was 0.71 (95% CI: 0.61–0.80). Our results indicate that more than one third of the Piping Plover population that breeds along the Atlantic coast winters in The Bahamas. By determining the importance of The Bahamas to the Atlantic subspecies of Piping Plovers, future conservation efforts for these populations can be better focused on where they are most needed.  相似文献

Synopsis Species composition and relative capture rates of water column fishes occurring on the shallow (<1 m), seagrass-covered mudbanks of Florida Bay were assessed using small-mesh gillnets. The fauna was largely temperate, with few tropical representatives, and was similar to the fish community in adjacent basins. There was a high variability in the catch across the Bay, reflecting heterogeneity in both the physical environment and various aspects of the seagrass canopy. The Gulf site, in the northwestern section of the Bay, had the highest species richness and highest capture rates of individual species, relative to other sites. Higher densities of potential prey, greater available foraging area, and organically rich, fine sediments are probably influential in the greater fish utilization of this bank. The greater exchange of western Florida Bay with open Atlantic or Gulf waters is proposed as a secondary factor influencing species richness; the probability of non-resident species occasionally appearing on western banks is greater than in isolated interior sections of the Bay.  相似文献

Offspring size is a key characteristic in life histories, reflecting maternal investment per offspring and, in marine invertebrates, being linked to mode of development. Few studies have focused explicitly on intraspecific variation and plasticity in developmental characteristics such as egg size and hatching size in marine invertebrates. We measured over 1000 eggs and hatchlings of the marine gastropods Crepidula atrasolea and Crepidula ustulatulina from two sites in Florida. A common‐garden experiment showed that egg size and hatching size were larger at 23 °C than at 28 °C in both species. In C. ustulatulina, the species with significant genetic population structure in cytochrome oxidase I (COI), there was a significant effect of population: Eggs and hatchlings from the Atlantic population were smaller than those from the Gulf. The two populations also differed significantly in hatchling shape. Population effects were not significant in C. atrasolea, the species with little genetic population structure in COI, and were apparent through their marginal interaction with temperature. In both species, 60–65% of the variation in egg size and hatching size was a result of variation among females and, in both species, the population from the Atlantic coast showed greater temperature‐mediated plasticity than the population from the Gulf. These results demonstrate that genetic differentiation among populations, plastic responses to variation in environmental temperature, and differences between females all contribute significantly to intraspecific variation in egg size and hatching size. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 99 , 489–499.  相似文献

The white shrimp (Litopenaeus setiferus) is a commercially and recreationally valuable species, yet little is known of its population structure or genetic diversity. White shrimp are distributed along the Atlantic coast of the United States and from the west coast of Florida to the Bay of Campeche, Mexico. In this study, shrimp were collected from North Carolina, South Carolina (four separate collections were taken from 1995 to 1999), Georgia, the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of Florida, Louisiana, Texas and Mexico. DNA was isolated from these individuals, and genetic variation was assessed at six microsatellite loci. These loci were, for the most part, highly polymorphic with an average expected heterozygosity of 0.68. Deviations from Hardy-Weinberg proportions were observed over all samples, but experimental results suggested the presence of null alleles, which confounded a biological interpretation of this result. Pairwise tests of the similarity of allele frequency distributions and distance measure analyses showed broad-scale genetic homogeneity superimposed over occasional indications of random geographical and temporal differentiation. FST and RST estimates over all loci and samples were 0.002 or less and indicated little population structure. Weak but significant genetic differentiation was evident only between pooled western Atlantic and pooled Gulf of Mexico samples. Within the Gulf of Mexico or within the western Atlantic, the large-scale genetic homogeneity observed may be a consequence of genetic mixing resulting from pelagic larvae and adult migrations, while the random local genetic differentiation may be a result of genetic sampling or experimental sampling error. The weak differentiation between shrimp from the Gulf of Mexico and the western Atlantic can be explained by a relatively recent separation of these two populations and/or small amounts of ongoing gene flow.  相似文献

Each year, millions of songbirds concentrate in coastal areas during fall migration. The choices birds make at the coast about stopover habitat use and migratory route can influence both the success of their migratory journey and fitness in subsequent life stages. We made use of a regional‐scale automated radio telemetry array to study stopover and migratory flights and migratory routes of blackpoll warblers Setophaga striata and red‐eyed vireos Vireo olivaceus during fall migration in the Gulf of Maine, USA. We focused on differences between species, sexes, age groups, breeding origins, and time of year. Both species made within‐stopover relocations (i.e. ‘stopover flights’) from the coastal capture site. Stopover flights were primarily oriented inland, and were more frequent for blackpolls (87%) than vireos (44%). By studying migratory behavior at a broad spatial scale, we demonstrated that most blackpolls and vireos took coastal and offshore routes through the Gulf of Maine, despite initially relocating inland from the capture site. Though we captured blackpolls and vireos from a broad breeding range, more than 70% of migratory flights from the capture site were oriented for coastal or offshore travel for both species, suggesting that birds actively chose coastal and offshore routes, and were not simply displaced by wind drift. Later vireos oriented offshore more frequently during migratory flights from the coast, indicating that they may be more inclined towards time‐minimizing overwater flight routes and thus more exposed to coastal and offshore collision hazards than earlier conspecifics.  相似文献

Adult lung nematodes identified as Halocercus lagenorhynchi were collected from the lungs of four Tursiops truncatus calves. The calves ranged in age from newborn to 3-wk-old and were found on both the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of Florida (USA). This finding suggests the possibility of a more cosmopolitan distribution of prenatal infection with lung nematodes in cetaceans than previously suspected.  相似文献

Abstract. The dioecious shrub Ceratiola ericoides (Florida rosemary) dominates xeric, infrequently burned Florida scrub vegetation, often to the near-exclusion of other woody species. We studied the spatial pattern, age, sex and size structure of four populations in Florida, USA: two coastal scrub populations subject to recurrent local disturbances due to sand movement, and two inland scrub populations in sites periodically burned by stand-replacing fires. The age structure of individual genets was estimated from node counts and used to describe the age structure of the populations. The sex ratio of males to females was not significantly different from 1:1, except within a female-biased coastal population subject to frequent sand movement. Node counts indicated that the mean age for reproductive individuals was 15 - 16 yr for the inland populations and 13 - 16 yr for the coastal populations. In all sites, there was no difference in mean age between males and females. Vegetative reproduction was uncommon except for the least-disturbed coastal population where 72 % of the reproductive individuals originated through layering. Individuals were generally randomly dispersed at the coastal sites, whereas significant aggregation of males and females occurred in the inland sites where the populations were initiated following fire. Seedling recruitment was continuous in the disturbed coastal scrub site, where 35% of the individuals were juveniles. Most juveniles were dispersed from 0.5 to 0.75 m around females. At one of the inland sites, where juveniles comprised 11% of the population, juveniles were clustered at 0.25 to 5.75 m around females. Coastal populations were all-aged, while inland populations were uneven-aged. Recruitment appears to follow periods of disturbance; infrequent fire in the inland populations and continuous sand movement on the coast are factors initiating recruitment.  相似文献

38 halacarid species from the coasts of the boreal West Atlantic Ocean have been recorded. In a wide-spread net of stations, samples were taken from different substrata in marine and brackish waters in order to obtain information on the biology and ecology of halacarid species. Several habitats with their flora, fauna and halacarid species are described. In intertidal areas on the coasts of boreal North America fewer species were found than known from European coasts. Similar habitats on the west and east coasts of the North Atlantic Ocean are compared with respect to their halacarid population. In the rhombognathine and the genusHalacarellus, most species found in the West Atlantic Ocean are known in the East Atlantic too, living in similar habitats. The generaAnomalohalacarus andCopidognathus are common both in North American and European waters, but comparable biotopes are inhabited by different species, though often related or very similar in their appearance. 45 % of the halacarid species found in the boreal West Atlantic Ocean are also known in the East Atlantic. Hypotheses as to the dispersal and geographical distribution of halacarid genera and species are discussed. It is supposed, that many of the amphiatlantic species invaded biotopes on the American and European coasts, shortly after these continental plates drifted apart.  相似文献

Gulf of Mexico versus Atlantic populations of several coastal species in the southeastern United States are known to differ sharply in genetic composition, but most transitional zones have not previously been examined in detail. Here we employ molecular markers from mitochondrial and nuclear loci to characterize cytonuclear genetic associations at meso- and microgeographic scales along an eastern Florida transitional zone between genetically distinct Atlantic and Gulf populations of the American oyster, Crassostrea virginica. The single- and multilocus cytonuclear patterns display: (1) a cline extending along 340 km of the east Florida coastline; (2) a pronounced step in the cline centered at Cape Canaveral (shifts in allelic frequencies by 50–75% over a 20 km distance); (3) a close agreement of observed genotypic frequencies with Hardy-Weinberg expectations within locales; and (4) mild or nonexistent nuclear and cytonuclear disequilibria in most local population samples. These results imply: (1) considerable restrictions to interpopulational gene flow along the eastern Florida coastline; (2) within locales, free interbreeding (as opposed to mere population admixture) between Gulf and Atlantic forms of oysters; and (3) localized population recruitment in the transition zone localities. These findings demonstrate that marine organisms with high dispersal potential via long-lived pelagic larvae can nonetheless display pronounced spatial population genetic structure, and more generally they exemplify the utility of pronounced genetic transition zones for the study of population level processes.  相似文献
