The ultrastructure of Pyramimonas pseudoparkeae sp. nov., a member of the class Prasinophyceae occurring in tidal pools along the east, south and west coast of South Africa, is described. The cell surface is covered by three distinctive body scales whilst the flagellar surfaces possess four types of scales. The structure of these scales is described. P. pseudoparkeae resembles Pyramimonas parkeae Norris and Pearson but differs in the structure of the type 2 body scale. The symmetry and ultrastructure of the cell are described with special attention given to the flagellar apparatus. Preliminary information on the life cycle of this species is presented. This new species is compared with other closely related members of the genus Pyramimonas.  相似文献

Chrysochromulina breviturrita sp. nov. is described as a new haptonema-bearing member of the freshwater Prymnesiophyceae. It is ca. three times larger than the only other known freshwater member of the genus (C. parva Lackey)and possesses a haptonema only ca. 0.2–0.3 as long as the haptonema of C. parva. Two equal flagella (1.5–2 as long as the haptonema), a large contractile vacuole, two parietal plasties, a single pyremid, nucleus, Chrysolaminarin-like droplets and a food vacuole are features readily observed with the light microscope. Dried and shadoweast whole mounts examined with the electron microscope reveal the cell surface covered with two types of small, delicate scales: outer spined scales with a clubshaped terminus and with the spine anchored to a circular to oval base-plate by 2–6 (7) branching arms; and, spineles oval plate scales with concentric lines and radiating ridges on one face and parallel ridges on the other. C. breviturrita has been found in nine lakes in Ontario (Canada). Pereliminary observations suggest that it is an important component of lake plankton and has probably not been delected in previous work, more because of its fragility than because of its scarcity. Living specimens are a prerequisite for initial identification, since cells frequently rupture and haptonemata are often lost when the organisms are killed with the commonly used fixatives.  相似文献

A new dinoflagellate, Scrippsiella arenicola Horiguchi et Pienaar sp. nov., is described from tidal pools with sandy substrates along the east coast of South Africa. S. arenicola exhibits a vertical migratory rhythm which is in synchrony with the tidal cycle. It is a medium-sized armoured dinoflagellate with many rod-shaped chloroplasts. Thecal plate arrangement is pp, x, 4′, 3a, 7′, 6c, 5′, 2″ and 4s. The 2a and 3a plates are separated from each other. S. arenicola has several unique ultrastructural features. Electron-dense fibres are found on the protruded part of the thecal plates, such as on the ornamental projections or extremities of the lists. In addition to the 9 + 2 axoneme, additional fibres are found in the free moving part of the longitudinal flagellum. The portion of the transverse flagellum covered by the left sulcal list possesses a dense array of mastigonemes which connect the flagellum and the cell. The flagellar pore platelets differ from ordinary thecal plates in their thickness and fibrous nature. The ultrastructure of the apical stalk and its associated structures is described. The vertical migration and mode of cell division is also described.  相似文献

A new species from the diatom genus Gomphoneis, G. mesta, was described following morphological and ultra-structural analyses of its frustules by light and scanning electron microscopy. The valve striation consisting of double rows of areolae and the presence of longitudinal lines dictate the systematic position of this taxon in the genus Gomphoneis. The set of features that distinguishes G. mesta from allied taxa is small valves, 26.5–81.6 μm in length and 7–12.5 μm in width, lanceolate to clavate shape, with a broadly lanceolate axial area, and longitudinal lines positioned next to the valve margins, thus contributing to a general thickening of the valve outline. When compared to other members of the genus, G. mesta most resembles G. magna Kociolek & Stoermer. Gomphoneis mesta dominates the epilithic community, growing in the Cherna Mesta, a pristine high-mountainous tributary of the Mesta River in Bulgaria. The species has been also found as small populations in all other benthic habitats of the Cherna Mesta and in a few locations along the Mesta River.  相似文献

The flagellar apparatus of an undescribed species of Chrysochromulina Lackey that bears “eyelash” scales is reconstructed. The transitional region consists of two transitional plates each with an axosome, with no stellate pattern between them. Fine osmiophilic rings lie between the flagellar membrane and the outer doublets in the transitional region. The two jagella and the haptonema are inserted in a subapical depression that is lined ventrally by a spine-like projection formed by one of the parietal chloroplasts. The angles of insertion are similar to those of some other Chrysochromulina species in that both the haptonema and the right basal body lie at an extreme angle to the left basal body. The connectives of the apparatus consist of a striated distal band with a dorsal extension to the R1 and a ventral extension overlying the R2, a striated distal accessory band, an auxiliary connective from the right basal body to the adjacent ventral chloroplast, a well-developed intermediate band, two striated proximal bands, and a striated proximal accessory band. Of the microtubular roots in this Chrysochromulina species, three are associated with the left side of the cell (an R1 of 8+3; a small crystalline compound root, the R1C, associated with the R1; an R2 of three micro-tubules), and two are associated with the right basal body (an R3 of 2/2 microtubules with which the single-stranded R4 converges to form a 2/2+1 and then a 2/3 tiered arrangement). Comparisons are drawn with other species in the genus and related genera, particularly Prymne-sium.  相似文献

We examined the molecular phylogeny and ultrastructure of Chlorogonium and related species to establish the natural taxonomy at the generic level. Phylogenetic analyses of 18S rRNA and RUBISCO LSU (rbcL) gene sequences revealed two separate clades of Chlorogonium from which Chlorogonium (Cg.) fusiforme Matv. was robustly separated. One clade comprised Cg. neglectum Pascher and Cg. kasakii Nozaki, whereas the other clade included the type species Cg. euchlorum (Ehrenb.) Ehrenb., Cg. elongatum (P. A. Dang.) Francé, and Cg. capillatum Nozaki, M. Watanabe et Aizawa. On the basis of unique ultrastructural characteristics, we described Gungnir Nakada gen. nov. comprising three species: G. neglectum (Pascher) Nakada comb. nov., G. mantoniae (H. Ettl) Nakada comb. nov., and G. kasakii (Nozaki) Nakada comb. nov. We also emended Chlorogonium as a monophyletic genus composed of Cg. euchlorum, Cg. elongatum, and Cg. capillatum. Because Cg. fusiforme was distinguished from the redefined Chlorogonium and Gungnir by the structure of its starch plate, which is associated with pyrenoids, we reclassified this species as Rusalka fusiformis (Matv.) Nakada gen. et comb. nov.  相似文献

We report the finding of two species of Mantoniella from the Weddell Sen and Prydz Bay, Antarctica. As well as M. squamata, a cosmopolitan species, we describe M. antarctica sp. nov., the second species in this genus. M. antarctica is covered with two distinctive types of discoid scales. The flagella bear only the smaller of the scale types whereas the cell body has both types, the larger overlying the smaller.  相似文献

Three chlorophyll c-type pigments were separated by reversed-phase high Performance liquid chromatography and thin-layer chromatography from pigment extracts of the prymnesiophyte, Prymnesium parvum Carter. Based on spectral characteristics, retention times, and comparison with reference pigments isolated from the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin, two of these pigments were identijied as chlorophyll c1 and c2. The other pigment was identified by its absorption spectrum and thin-layer chromatography retention times as the newly described chlorophyll c3. However, in other prymnesiophytes so far examined, chlorophyll c1 and chlorophyll c3 were present with no chlorophyll cl. The discovery of chlorophyll c3 with chlorophyll c1 and chlorophyll c3 in Prymnesium parvum therefore represents the first report of this combination of pigments in prymnesiophytes.  相似文献

The occurrence of three endophytic green algae within Chondrus crispus Stackh. is reported. Two of them are new to science and are described as Acrochaete heteroclada Correa and Nielsen sp. nov. and A. operculata Correa and Nielsen sp. nov. The algae were studied in unialgal culture and in association with the host following infection of C. crispus under laboratory conditions. The experimental infection showed A. heteroclada to be initially epiphytic, with endophytic filaments growing into the cortex of the host during late infection. A. operculata is entirely endophytic when associated with the host. Phaeophila dendroides (Crouan frat.) Batters behaves as an epiphyte at 15 and 24°C but penetrates the host tissues at 20°C. For all three species, a close physical association with the host is established only when zoospores settle and germinate on the surface of C. crispus.  相似文献

Three new benthic, photosynthetic dinoflagellate species, Prorocentrum norrisianum, Prorocentrum tropicalis, and Prorocentrum reticulatum, from floating detritus and coral rubble of Central America are described from scanning electron micrographs. Species were identified based on shape, size, surface micromorphology, thecal plate ornamentation, and architecture of the periflagellar area and intercalary band. Cells of P. norrisianum are ovate with a cell size of 20–25 μm long and 13–16 μm wide. The theca is delicate, its surface smooth, pores species specific with 95 to 105 pores per valve. Pores are round with a diameter of about 0.1 μm. The periflagellar area is V-shaped, located on the right valve in a shallow depression. It has no ornamentation. The flagellar and auxiliary pores are unequal in size. The intercalary band is smooth. Prorocentrum tropicalis cells are ovoid, 50–55 μm long and 40–45 μm wide in valve view with maximum width behind the middle region, narrow at the anterior end. The periflagellar area, situated in the right valve, is a V-shaped wide triangle with a deeply indented depression; the left valve exhibits a flat ridge. The periflagellar area is unornamented, and the flagellar and auxiliary pores are unequal in size. The valve surface is rugose with evenly distributed valve poroids. Each poroid appears to have a small dome in the center. The intercalary band is rimlike around the cell margin, granulated, and horizontally striated. Prorocentrum reticulatum cells are oblong in valve view; cells are 55–60 μm long and 40–45 μm wide. Thecal surface is reticulated; it is composed of a labyrinth of ridges with alternating depressions that vary in size and shape. Each depression has a narrow, oblong-kidney-shaped opening about 0.6 μm long. The periflagellar area is a deep, V-shaped triangle. The right valve of P. reticulatum is excavated, and contains a large flagellar pore and a smaller auxiliary pore surrounded by a narrow apical collar. The left valve margin exhibits a curved flat ridge. The intercalary band is smooth.  相似文献

On the basis of LM, we isolated strains of two species of fusiform green flagellates that could be assigned to former Chlorogonium (Cg.) Ehrenb. One species, “Cg.”heimii Bourr., lacked a pyrenoid in its vegetative cells and required organic compounds for growth. The other was similar to Cg. elongatum (P. A. Dang.) Francé and “Cg.”acus Nayal, but with slightly smaller vegetative cells. Their molecular phylogeny was also studied based on combined 18S rRNA, RUBISCO LSU (rbcL), and P700 chl a‐apoprotein A2 (psaB) gene sequences. Both species were separated from Chlorogonium emend., Gungnir Nakada and Rusalka Nakada, which were formerly assigned to Chlorogonium. They were accordingly assigned to new genera, Tabris Nakada gen. nov. and Hamakko (Hk.) Nakada gen. nov. as T. heimii (Bourr.) Nakada comb. nov. and Hk. caudatus Nakada sp. nov., respectively. Tabris is differentiated from other genera of fusiform green flagellates by its vegetative cells, which only have two apical contractile vacuoles and lack a pyrenoid in the chloroplast. Hamakko, on the other hand, is distinguishable by the fact that its pyrenoids in vegetative cells are penetrated by flattened thylakoid lamellae.  相似文献

Prymnesium parvum blooms have become more frequent in the south‐central United States, leading to significant ecological and economic impacts. Allelopathic effects from cyanobacteria were suggested as a mechanism that might limit the development of P. parvum blooms. This research focused on the effects of cultured cyanobacteria, Anabaena sp., on P. parvum. Over a 6‐d period, daily additions of filtrate from the senescent Anabaena culture were made to P. parvum cultures growing in log phase. All treatments, including several types of controls, showed reductions in P. parvum biomass over the course of the experiment, but the treatments receiving Anabaena filtrate were reduced to a lesser degree, suggesting that filtrate from the senescent cyanobacteria culture was beneficial to P. parvum in some way. This unexpected outcome may have resulted from stimulation of heterotrophic bacteria by the addition of Anabaena filtrate, which likely contained exudates rich in dissolved organic carbon compounds. P. parvum was then able to supplement its nutritional requirements for growth by feeding on the elevated bacteria population. These findings coupled to previous observations suggest that interactions between cyanobacteria and P. parvum in natural environments are complex, where both allelopathic and growth‐stimulating interactions are possible.  相似文献

Ahnfeltia plicata (Hudson) Fries, the type species of Ahnfeltia Fries, is currently assigned to the Phyllophoraceae (Gigartinales). Several morphological and biochemical characters distance A. plicata from the Phyllophoraceae but, because sexual reproduction has never been demonstrated, an alternative placement has not been possible. A. plicata now is shown to have a heteromorphic sexual life history. Erect branched gametophytes are dioecious. In male sori, spermatangia are cut off transversely from spermatangial mother cells. Female sori form numerous terminal sessile carpogonia. Following fertilization, several zygotes in each sorus fuse facultatively with undifferentiated intercalary cells of the female sorus and cut off gonimoblast initials obliquely outwards. These initials give rise to branching gonimoblast filaments that fuse with apical and intercalary female sorus cells and with each other, then grow radially outward in the compound external carposporophyte and terminate in carposporangia. Carpospores develop in culture into crustose tetrasporophytes identical to Porphyrodiscus simulans Batters. Field-collected P. simulans tetraspores grew into erect A. plicata axes. Tetrasporangia are formed by division and enlargement of crust apical cells followed by sequential enlargement and maturation of tetrasporocytes in an erosive process. Monosporangia are formed in sori on male gametophytes. Pit plugs of both gametophyte and tetrasporophyte phases consist of naked plug cores without cap layers of membranes. Gametophytes exhibit both cell fusions and secondary pit connections whereas tetrasporophytes form cell fusions but lack secondary pit connections. On the basis of the unique female and postfertilization reproductive development and in conjunction with the pit plug structure which is unique among florideophytes, the order Ahnfeltiales, containing the family Ahnfeltiaceae, is proposed.  相似文献

The newly described toxic dinoflagellate Pfiesteria piscicida is a polymorphic and multiphasic species with flagellated, amoeboid, and cyst stages. The species is structurally a heterotroph; however, the flagellated stages can have cleptochloroplasts in large food vacuoles and can temporarily function as mixotrophs. The flagellated stage has a typical mesokaryotic nucleus, and the theca is composed of four membranes, two of which are vesicular and contain thin plates arranged in a Kofoidian series of Po, cp, X, 4′, 1a, 5″, 6c, 4s, 5″′, and 2″″. The plate tabulation is unlike that of any other armored dinoflagellate. Nodules often demark the suture lines underneath the outer membrane, but fixation protocols can influence the detection of plates. Amoeboid benthic stages can be filose to lobose, are thecate, and have a reticulate or spiculate appearance. Amoeboid stages have a eukaryotic nuclear profile and are phagocytic. Cyst stages include a small spherical stage with a honeycomb, reticulate surface and possibly another stage that is elongate and oval to spherical with chrysophyte-like scales that can have long bracts. The species is placed in a new family, Pfiesteriaceae, and the order Dinamoebales is emended.  相似文献

Chrysolepidomonas gen. nov. is described for single-celled monads with two flagella, a single chloroplast, and distinctive canistrate and dendritic scales. The type species, Chrysolepidomonas dendrolepidota sp. nov., is described for the first time. The canistrate scales bear eight “bumps” on the top surface, and the dendriticscales have a tapered base with a quatrifid tip. These organic scales are formed in the Golgi apparatus and storred in a scale reservoir. The scale reservoir is bounded on two sides by the R1 and R2 in microtubular roots of the basal apparatus. The cyst (=stomatocyst, statospore) forms endogenously by means of a silica deposition vesicle. The outer cyst surface is smooth, and the pore region is unornamented. Two other organisms bearing canistrate and dendritic scales, previously assigned to the genus Sphaleromants, are transferred to the genus Chrysolepidomonas. They are C.angalica sp. nov. and C. marine(Pienaar) comb. nov. The distinguishing features of Chrysolepidomonas and Sphaleromantis are discussed. A new family, Chrysolepidomonadceae fam. noc., is described for flagellates covered with organic scales.  相似文献

The red alga Cenacrum subsutum gen. et sp. nov. is described from material collected at Macquarie Island in the subantarctic between November 1977 and February 1978. The habit and carposporophyte development are similar to members of the family Rhodymeniaceae (Rhodymeniales), but certain vegetative features are unique. The frond is a variously incised or lobed foliose blade with hollow apices above and a medulla which becomes progressively filled basipetally with ingrowing rhizoidal filaments. Details of carpogonial branch, auxiliary cell, connecting cell and gonimoblast anatomy are given, as well as observations on the habitats and distribution of the species.  相似文献

The coccolithophore Algirosphaera robusta (Lohmann) R. E. Norris was isolated into laboratory culture for the first time. This species is of particular interest as the first deep photic coccolithophore to be cultured, the only member of the Rhabdosphaeraceae to have been successfully isolated, and the first coccolithophore with a coccolith structure including a complex disjunct central area to have been studied in detail. Observations on the culture strain supported the previous inference that the commonly recognized species A. robusta, A. oryza Schlauder, and A. quadricornu (J. Schiller) R. E. Norris are conspecific. However, A. meteora (Müller) R. E. Norris and A. cucullata (Lecal‐Schlauder) J. R. Young, Probert et Kleijne were recognized as discrete species. Coccolith rim formation in A. robusta follows the pattern of biomineralization documented in other heterococcoliths and was suggested to be universal. However, the prominent central hood had a unique ultrastructure and appeared to be formed by a distinctively different biomineralization mode. We suggest that this can provide a key to reinterpreting homology in coccolith structure and that this species is a promising target for comparative biochemical and genomic studies of biomineralization. In terms of cell ultrastructure, A. robusta exhibited marked similarities to Syracosphaera pulchra Lohmann, and a close evolutionary relationship between the families Rhabdosphaeraceae and Syracosphaeraceae is suggested.  相似文献
