We examined relationships among cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concentrations of the major serotonin metabolite (5-HIAA, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid) and significant medical and behavioral outcomes for female rhesus macaques. Based on earlier findings with males we predicted that low CSF 5-HIAA concentrations would be associated with a range of negative life history outcomes in our captive specific-pathogen-free (SPF) breeding colony. We found that the mean CSF 5-HIAA concentration among animals that died over the course of the study period was significantly lower than among animals that survived. Further examination indicated an inverse relationship between CSF 5-HIAA concentration and number of treatments for illness, further suggesting a link between serotonergic functioning and overall animal health. Examination of behavioral data indicated that individuals with low CSF 5-HIAA concentrations were more often the targets of aggressive bouts than were individuals with high CSF 5-HIAA concentrations. Finally, we found a positive relationship between CSF 5-HIAA concentration and infant survivorship. These results suggest negative life history consequences of impaired serotonergic functioning in captive female rhesus macaques, and indicate that CSF 5-HIAA concentration sampled early in life may provide a useful tool in facilitating colony management decisions concerning utilization of scarce and increasingly valuable non-human primate resources.  相似文献

Several studies have demonstrated that nonhuman primate males with low cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of the serotonin metabolite 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) exhibit antisocial behavior patterns. Included in these deleterious patterns are impulse control deficits associated with violence and premature death. No studies to date have longitudinally studied the long-term outcome of young subjects with low CSF 5-HIAA concentrations as they mature into adults. In this study we examined longitudinal relations among serotonergic and dopaminergic functioning, as reflected in CSF metabolite concentrations, aggression, age at emigration, dominance rank, and mortality in free-ranging rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) males. Our results indicate long-term consistency of individual differences in levels of 5-HIAA in CSF in the subject population from the juvenile period of development through adulthood. We found a significant negative correlation between 5-HIAA concentrations measured in juveniles and rates of high-intensity aggression in the same animals as adults. Further, CSF 5-HIAA concentrations were lower in juveniles that died than in animals that survived. For the young animals that migrated there was a positive correlation between CSF 5-HIAA concentration and age at emigration, whereas for the animals that remained in their troop until later in sexual maturity there was a negative correlation between CSF 5-HIAA concentration and age of emigration. After animals emigrated to a new troop, social dominance rank in the new troop was positively correlated with early family social dominance rank, but inversely correlated with juvenile CSF 5-HIAA concentrations. Taken together, our findings suggest that males with low central serotonin levels early in life delay migration and show high levels of violence and premature death, but the males that survive achieve high rank. These findings indicate that longitudinal measures of serotonergic and dopaminergic functioning are predictive of major life-history outcomes in nonhuman primate males. Low concentrations of CSF 5-HIAA are associated with negative life-history patterns characterized by social instability and excessive aggression, and positive life-history patterns characterized by higher dominance rank.  相似文献

Male rhesus monkeys typically disperse from their groups of birth when they are between 3 and 5 years of age. Some males, however, delay dispersal from their natal groups until after they are 5 years old. The current study evaluated central monoaminergic neurotransmitter activity as a potential correlate of such “delayed” dispersal among 54 randomly selected adolescent and adult male rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) captured on Cayo Santiago during an annual trapping season. Specifically, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concentrations of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA, a serotonin metabolite), 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG, a norepinephrine metabolite), and homovanillic acid (HVA, a dopamine metabolite) were compared in monkeys 60 months of age or more that had either dispersed (n = 33) or were still in their natal groups (n = 5). The monkeys still in their natal groups had higher CSF concentrations of both 5-HIAA and HVA (but not MHPG) than did the animals that had emigrated (Ps < 0.05). Subsequent analysis indicated that only 5-HIAA independently differentiated dispersing monkeys from delayed dispensers. Of monkeys less than 60 months of age (n = 16), only two had dispersed from their natal groups; in this age class, there were no significant differences between dispersing and natal individuals in any CSF monoaminergic metabolite (all Ps = NS). Finally, there was no difference in the CSF 5-HIAA concentrations of the five delayed dispersers and those of younger animals (P = NS), suggesting a failure to experience the frequently reported adolescent decline in serotonergic activity. In contrast, the CSF 5-HIAA concentrations of the dispersing animals were lower than those of the younger animals (P < 0.05), consistent with either an agerelated decline or an effect of dispersal per se. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

In a 20-month study of six groups of vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) in Amboseli National Park, Kenya, I documented changes in hair loss in all individuals, and scrotal color and hyperpigmentation in all adult males. Hair loss occurred seasonally and was most pronounced in low-ranking individuals, especially males. The mean shade of scrotal color for all males and the percentage of males with scrotal hyperpigmentation both covaried with hair loss over time. Scrotal color was strongly negatively correlated with scrotal hyperpigmentation. The underlying causes are not yet known. I present three scenarios based on nutrition, stress from competition, or a combination of the two, that might explain these patterns. Awareness of these easily observable changes may provide field-workers with a quickly assessed visual measure of physical or emotional stress in free-ranging vervets. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The role of the serotonergic system in the pathogenesis of behavioral disorders such as depression, alcoholism, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and violence is not completely understood. Measurement of the concentration of neurotransmitters and their metabolites in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is considered among the most valid, albeit indirect, methods of assessing central nervous system function in man. However, most studies in humans have measured lumbar CSF concentrations only at single time points, thus not taking into account rhythmic or episodic variations in levels of neurotransmitters, precursors, or metabolites. We have continuously sampled lumbar CSF via subarachnoid catheter in 12 healthy volunteers, aged 20-65 years. One ml (every 10 min) CSF samples were collected at a rate of 0.1ml/min for 24-hour (h), and the levels of tryptophan (TRP) and 5-hydroxy indoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) were measured. Variability across all 12 subjects was significantly greater (P < 0.0001) than the variability seen in repeated analysis of a reference CSF sample for both 5-HIAA (32.0% vs 7.9%) and TRP (25.4% vs 7.0%), confirming the presence of significant biological variability during the 24-hr period examined. This variability could not be explained solely by meal related effects. Cosinor analysis of the 24-hr TRP concentrations from all subjects revealed a significant diurnal pattern in CSF TRP levels, whereas the 5-HIAA data were less consistent. These studies indicate that long-term serial CSF sampling reveals diurnal and biological variability not evident in studies based on single CSF samples.  相似文献

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concentrations of the monoamine metabolites homovanillic acid (HVA) and 5-hydroxyindolacetic acid (5-HIAA) are commonly used to provide information about central nervous system (CNS) dopaminergic and serotonergic activity. However, little attention has been given to the effects of sample handling on the concentrations of these compounds in human CSF. Using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with electrochemical detection, we observed that, in CSF stored at −80°C, concentrations of the serotonin metabolite 5-HIAA and the dopamine metabolite HVA remained unchanged through six 1-h and six 24-h freeze–thaw cycles. Exposure to bright room light (3 h, 1230 lux) resulted in a 5-HIAA concentration that was 96.3±2.0% of the initial and an HVA concentration that was 98.8±1.03% of initial. The pH of the CSF significantly increased during both freeze–thaw series and while maintained on ice (4°C). These results demonstrate the in-use stability of 5-HIAA and HVA in human CSF under commonly-encountered laboratory conditions.  相似文献

There are conflicting reports of the effects of aging on human neurotransmitter systems as estimated by monoamine metabolite concentrations in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). These discrepancies may be due to sampling site, age or sex of the subjects or other variables that affect CSF metabolite determinations. Cisternal CSF concentrations of homovanillic acid (HVA), 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenyl-ethylene glycol (MHPG) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), major metabolites of dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin, respectively, were measured in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) of two age groups. Concentrations of HVA and MHPG were significantly lower in the older group of monkeys, whereas no changes in 5-HIAA were found. This supports the hypothesis that brain catecholamine concentrations decline with age.  相似文献

The present study was undertaken to determine cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and brain levels of norepinephrine (NE), serotonin (5-HT) and their metabolites--3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC), 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenylacetic acid (HVA) and 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid (5-HIAA)--in rats pretreated with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) or 5,7-dihydroxytryptamine (5,7-DHT). In the 6-OHDA pretreated rats, both CSF and brain concentrations of NE, DOPAC and HVA sustained significant decreases as compared with those in non-treated rats. Positive and significant correlations between CSF and brain levels were observed in respect to NE, DOPAC and HVA. In 5,7-DHT pretreated rats, both CSF and brain concentrations of 5-HT and 5-HIAA were significantly decreased. A positive and significant correlation between CSF and brain levels in respect to 5-HT and 5-HIAA was observed. Further studies were carried out to determine ACh levels of both the CSF and the brain in microspheres (MS)-treated rats, which are used as a model of microembolization. The CSF ACh concentrations in MS-treated groups were significantly decreased as compared with those in non-treated rats. The brain ACh contents also tended to decrease in this group. A positive and significant correlation was observed between CSF and brain levels of ACh. These findings suggest that NE, 5-HT and ACh concentrations in the CSF are direct indications of central noradrenergic, serotonergic and cholinergic nerve activity, respectively.  相似文献

It is widely hypothesized that individual differences in central nervous system (CNS) serotonergic activity underlie dimensional variation in "impulsive" vs. "inhibited" social behavior in both humans and nonhuman primates. To assess relative impulsivity in a social context, a behavioral challenge involving animals' exposure to a social stranger (termed the "Intruder Challenge") was recently validated in adolescent and adult male vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops sabaeus). Among these animals, monkeys that quickly approached the intruder were found to have lower cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concentrations of the serotonin (5-HT) metabolite, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid, than less impulsive animals. In the present study we extended these observations to determine whether approach to a social stranger, as operationalized by the Intruder Challenge, is similarly associated with diminished CNS serotonergic function in female cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis). Study animals were 25 adult monkeys that had been housed for 2 years in stable social groups. In each animal, the rise in plasma prolactin concentration induced by acute administration of the 5-HT agonist, fenfluramine, was used to assess "net" central serotonergic responsivity. When exposed later to an unfamiliar female of the same species in a catch-cage placed for 20 min within the subjects' home enclosure, monkeys that approached to within 1 m of the intruder (median latency to approach=3 min) were found to have significantly smaller prolactin responses to fenfluramine (diminished serotonergic responsivity) compared to "inhibited" animals that failed to approach the intruder (t=2.9, df=23, P<0.009; rpb=-0.51). Neither approach behavior nor the animals' fenfluramine-induced prolactin responses covaried significantly with nondirected expressions of arousal (or anxiety) or with aggressive behaviors exhibited during testing. We conclude that in female cynomolgus monkeys, social impulsivity (vs. inhibition) correlates inversely with individual differences in CNS serotonergic activity, as assessed by neuroendocrine challenge.  相似文献

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by decreased striatal dopamine, but serotonin (5-HT) is also reduced. Because 5-HT decreases following a single levodopa injection, levodopa has been suggested to contribute to PD's serotonergic deficits. However, in a recent study, rat striatal serotonin levels were reported to increase following 15-day levodopa administration. To address this issue, we administered levodopa (50 mg/kg) to rabbits for 5 days, then measured serotonin, its precursors tryptophan and 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), and its major metabolite 5-hydroxyindole-acetic acid (5-HIAA) in striatum and CSF. Striatal serotonin and tryptophan were unchanged, while 5-HTP and 5-HIAA increased 4- and 7-fold, respectively. CSF 5-HTP and 5-HIAA were also significantly increased. In levodopa-treated animals, 5-HTP concentrations were moderately correlated (r = 0.679) between striatum and CSF, while weak correlations were present between striatal and CSF concentrations of both serotonin and 5-HIAA. These results suggest that repeated levodopa treatment increases striatal serotonin turnover without changing serotonin content. However, levodopa-induced alterations in striatal serotonin metabolism may not be accurately reflected by measurement of serotonin and 5-HIAA in CSF.  相似文献

Data are lacking concerning the longitudinal covariability and cross-sectional balance between central and peripheral 5-HIAA concentrations in humans and on the possible associations between tobacco smoking or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and CSF and plasma 5-HIAA concentrations. Using serial cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood sampling, we determined the concentrations of 5-HIAA in CSF and plasma over 6 h, and examined their relationships in healthy volunteers and patients with PTSD-both smokers and nonsmokers. Patients with PTSD and healthy volunteers had very similar CSF 5-HIAA concentrations. Significant and positive correlations between CSF and plasma 5-HIAA levels were observed within individuals, but this CNS-peripheral 5-HIAA relationship was significantly reduced in smokers (nonsmokers: mean r = 0.559 +/- 0.072; smokers: mean r = 0.329 +/- 0.064 p < 0.038). No significant cross-sectional, interindividual correlation of mean CSF and mean plasma 5-HIAA was seen (r = 0.094). These data show that changes in CSF 5-HIAA levels within an individual over time are largely reflected in plasma 5-HIAA, albeit significantly less so in smokers. The present results therefore suggest that clinically, longitudinal determination of plasma 5-HIAA concentrations within an individual patient can be used to make inferences about relative changes in integrated CSF 5-HIAA concentrations. However, plasma 5-HIAA concentrations provide no significant information about absolute levels of the serotonin metabolite in the CSF.  相似文献

Recreational use of the synthetic methamphetamine derivative MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine), the main constituent of the illegal drug "ecstasy", has increased dramatically in recent years. The reasons for ecstasy-associated cardiovascular complications like tachycardia, arrhythmias and hypertensive crises and psychiatric symptoms like psychotic episodes are not well understood. We have measured the plasma concentrations of 5-HIAA, 5-HT, norepinephrine, epinephrine and dopamine in 159 ecstasy users and controls. Ecstasy users showed elevated resting sympathetic activity, reflected in increased norepinephrine, epinephrine and dopamine levels. The levels of these catecholamines correlated positively with the cumulative dose and also with consumption during the last 30 days and 12 months. Although it is known that significant changes in 5-HT and 5-HIAA appear in the cerebrospinal fluid in ecstasy users, we could not detect alterations in serotonergic neurotransmitters in plasma in this large sample of subjects. Thus, in the drug-free interval, ecstasy users show lowered central serotonergic activity (lowered 5-HT and 5-HIAA concentrations in CSF) along with unchanged central noradrenergic and dopaminergic activity (HVA and MHPG unchanged in CSF) and elevated peripheral noradrenergic, dopaminergic and adrenergic activity along with unchanged peripheral serotonergic activity (plasma levels). We conclude, that the data presented here could argue for a noradrenergic hyperreactivity in the drug-free interval in ecstasy users resulting from previous ecstasy consumption. Also for an association with psychotic episodes and cardiovascular complications like tachycardia, arrhythmias.  相似文献

Patas monkeys ( Erythrocebus patas ) have aquamarine-coloured scrota, but data are unavailable regarding the potential connection between changes in scrotal coloration and testicular function. In the rhesus monkey ( Macaca mulatta ), seasonality of mating is accompanied by an intensification of red colour of the scrotum and a doubling of testicle size. A one-year study of male patas monkeys was undertaken in order to examine potential seasonal correlates of testicular function and scrotal colour. Increases in testosterone concentrations and testicular volume occurred during the mating season in adult males, but scrotal colour was fairly uniform throughout the year. Neither age, body weight, nor health influenced scrotal colour. These findings contradict the suggestion that the sex skin of seasonally breeding primates will become more intense during the mating season as a result of elevations in steroid hormone levels. Evidence from field studies in Africa suggest that the colour is part of a constellation of traits involved in male competition for mates.  相似文献

Carotenoid-based skin colorations vary seasonally in many bird species and are thought to be honest sexually selected signals. In order to provide more insight in the potential signal function and underlying mechanisms of such colorations we here quantified patterns of variation of leg coloration in adult male and female Eurasian kestrels (Falco tinnunculus tinnunculus) over the breeding season, and evaluated the relationship between coloration and levels of carotenoids, androgens and estrogens, oxidative damage and plasma non-enzymatic antioxidant capacity. We studied both reproducing wild and non-reproducing captive birds to test for the effect of diet and breeding effort. Males were more colored than females only during mating, and independently of diet, suggesting that leg-color is a sexually selected trait. Seasonal variation in leg color was associated with circulating carotenoids, but concentrations of these molecules were not related to antioxidant capacity, body condition or oxidative damage. These results indicate that carotenoid-based colorations may not be an honest signal of health status in this species. Production of carotenoid rich eggs coincided with low levels of circulating carotenoids in females, indicating that carotenoids might be a limited resource for laying female kestrels. Finally, young rearing males had higher levels of oxidative damage than females, and wild birds of both sexes had higher levels of these parameters than captive birds. These results may indicate that parental effort and physical activity are costly, independently from hormonal status. Since androgens did not explain carotenoid variation we suggest that multiple interacting factors can regulate carotenoid levels along the season.  相似文献

Brain serotonergic systems may participate in the regulation of mood, impulsivity and aggressive behavior. Because some monoaminergic mechanisms seem to be similar in the central nervous system and peripheral tissues, we tested whether serotonergic or dopaminergic biochemical parameters in peripheral venous blood are related or not to violent suicide behavior. We simultaneously studied plasma serotonin (5-HT), 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), homovanillic acid (HVA) and platelet 5-HT content in patients within 3 days following a violent suicide attempt and in matched healthy controls. We examined their relationship with depression and impulsivity. Twenty seven drug-free suicide attempters and controls were included. Plasma 5-HIAA and platelet 5-HT concentrations were lower in suicide attempters than in controls. Fifteen patients were classified as impulsive (I), including all patients suffering from personality disorder and alcohol abuse, and 12 as non impulsive (NI), mostly melancholics. MADRS scores were similar in both I and NI suicide attempters. When controlling for age, plasma 5-HIAA was lower in I than in NI suicide attempters or controls; these findings are similar to those we observed recently with CSF 5-HIAA in I and NI violent suicide attempters. Contrarily, platelet 5-HT levels were lower in NI than in I patients or controls. Plasma HVA was not associated with suicide behavior. Plasma 5-HIAA concentration was inversely associated with the degree of impulsivity and platelet 5-HT with the intensity of depression. This study indicates that each peripheral serotonergic index is specifically related to a distinct clinical feature and shows differential alteration according to the impulsivity group. In I and NI drug-free violent suicide attempters an inverse figure between plasma 5-HIAA and platelet 5-HT data was observed indicating a non parallelism between these two peripheral variables. Further prospective studies are needed to investigate whether these peripheral serotonergic parameters may be used as helpful early predictors of violent suicide behavior.  相似文献

An investigation was made into the effects of running (1 h at 20 m/min) on central serotonergic and dopaminergic metabolism in trained rats. Methodology involved continuous withdrawal of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the third ventricle of conscious rats and measurements of tryptophan (TRP), 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), and homovanillic acid (HVA) levels during a 2 h post-exercise period. All three compounds were increased during the hour following exercise and returned to their basal values within an hour later. CSF flow rate was stable when metabolite levels were elevated. Brain determinations indicated that CSF metabolite variations only qualitatively paralleled brain changes. Indeed, post-exercise TRP, 5-HIAA, and HVA levels were increased to a greater extent in brain when compared to CSF. It is suggested that increased serotonergic and dopaminergic metabolism, caused by motor activity, may be involved in the behavioral effects of exercise.  相似文献

The effects of elevated testosterone on plumage hue in male House Finches   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The majority of studies examining the role of hormones in the proximate mechanisms of plumage coloration in birds have focused on intersexual differences (plumage dichromatism) and on structural- or melanin-based plumage coloration. The relationship between hormones and carotenoid-based plumage color, and in particular intrasexual plumage color variation, has received little attention. We manipulated testosterone levels of both captive and wild male House Finches to determine whether testosterone influences the expression of male plumage color in this species. We found that in captive male House Finches elevated testosterone delayed molt and resulted in drabber, less red plumage, even when birds were supplemented with dietary carotenoids. Elevated testosterone also resulted in drab plumage color in wild males, and appeared to delay molt in wild birds as well. Wild males implanted with testosterone showed wide variation in expression of plumage coloration. Those implanted early in the year molted plumage similar in color to their pre-treatment plumage, but those implanted later molted substantially duller plumage, possibly because delayed molt resulting from elevated testosterone caused these males to molt when carotenoid pigments were not available in sufficient amounts. These observations have the potential to explain previously reported relationships between plumage color and behavior in male House Finches, and highlight the importance of considering the proximate mechanisms of plumage coloration in avian sexual selection.  相似文献

Axonal degeneration and brain tissue loss occur during disease progression in multiple sclerosis (MS) and are expected to influence neurotransmitter activities, with consequences on neurologic and psychiatric symptomatology. We searched for relationships of disease duration, disability, and severity of MS patients to CSF levels of the major metabolites of noradrenaline, dopamine, and serotonin, MHPG, methoxyhydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG), homovanillic acid, and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), respectively, in 39 patients with relapsing–remitting (RR) MS in remission, and 26 patients with progressive (PR) MS. Disability and Disease Severity were assessed by the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) and the Multiple Sclerosis Severity Score (MSSS). Compared with the levels of 50 control subjects, MHPG levels were not different in either MS group, correlated negatively to duration of illness and number of relapses in the RRMS group, but not to EDSS score or to MSSS. Homovanillic acid levels were significantly lower only in the PRMS group, with a negative correlation to duration of illness, and a strong negative correlation to EDSS score, but not to MSSS. 5-HIAA was significantly lower in both RRMS and PRMS groups. In the RRMS group, 5-HIAA levels were negatively related to EDSS and to MSSS. Multiple regression analyses revealed a significant association of MHPG to duration of illness, and a strong negative association of 5-HIAA to MSSS rather than to EDSS. The strong negative correlation of MSSS to CSF 5-HIAA levels in RRMS group of patients indicates that deficits in central serotonergic activity are related to the rate of disability accumulation in RRMS, and could be linked to the reported reduction of disease activity by serotonergic drugs.  相似文献

In this study we investigated the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concentrations of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) and homovanillic acid (HVA) in Alzheimer (AD) patients (n=75), patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI, n=9) and patients with depression (n=7). CSF HVA was significantly elevated in AD with depression (Geriatric Depression Scale, 15 point version GDS>5) in comparison to AD without depression (p<0.05, ANOVA) and CSF HVA showed a significant positive correlation with the GDS score of AD-patients (p=0.03, Spearman Rho: 0.38, Spearman Rank Correlation). In the group of AD patients CSF 5-HIAA was positively correlated with cerebrospinal fluid beta-amyloid 1-42 (Abeta42), p<0.05, Spearman Rho: 0.3, Spearman Rank Correlation, but not with CSF tau. Additionally, there was a significant positive correlation between cerebrospinal fluid 5-HIAA and HVA in the group of AD patients (p<0.0001, Rho: 0.47, Spearman Rank correlation). Neither 5-HIAA nor HVA in CSF could differentiate between mild cognitive impairment, depression and AD. The results of this study support the hypothesis that the serotonergic system plays a role in the course of AD. They further suggest an important role of dopamine metabolism in depression within AD patients.  相似文献

The relationships between the concentration of serotonin (5-HT) and related metabolites in human blood and CSF have been studied. Plasma tryptophan (TP), 5-HT, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), and indoleacetic acid (IAA), whole-blood 5-HT, and CSF TP, 5-HT, 5-HIAA, IAA, homovanillic acid, and 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylethylene glycol were determined in 35 unmedicated outpatients who underwent minor surgical operations and had no history of psychiatric or neurological illnesses. Significant correlations were found between the serotoninergic parameters analyzed in blood and CSF. Plasma free 5-HT correlated significantly with CSF 5-HT (r = 0.411, p less than 0.02), and plasma 5-HIAA correlated with the CSF 5-HIAA/5-HT ratio (r = 0.508, p less than 0.004). The concentration of 5-HIAA in CSF correlated with the plasma 5-HIAA/5-HT ratio (r = 0.405, p less than 0.026) (which can be taken as an index of monoamine oxidase type A activity in peripheral tissues) and with the platelet 5-HT/plasma 5-HT ratio (r = 0.375, p less than 0.05). The concentrations of IAA in CSF and plasma were strongly correlated (r = 0.899, p less than 0.001). The significance of these results and their relationship to the use of "in vivo" measures of 5-HT and related metabolites in plasma and platelets as an index of serotoninergic function in affective disorders are discussed.  相似文献
