Feral pigeons are known as reservoirs of pathogenic yeasts that cause opportunistic infections in human. In the outskirts of Beijing, China, pigeons are more frequently raised at homes than are encountered in public areas. Many studies have focused on the presence of pathogenic yeasts in the excreta (fresh or withered) of a variety kinds of birds, pigeon crop and cloacae. One hundred and forty-three samples of fresh droppings were collected from three suburban pigeon-raising homes in an area of northern Beijing, China. The internal transcribed sequences (ITS) of all strains (except for 8 strains of Rhodotorula sp. ) were sequenced and compared with those of the databases of the National Center for Biotechnology Information website ( http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov ) using the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST). Yeasts representing 8 genera, Cryptococcus, Filobasidium, Rhodotorula, Candida, Debaryomyces, Saccaromyces, Trichosporon and Sporidiobolus, were identified from 120 isolates. Cryptococcus was the most prolific genera represented by eight species. The populations of yeast species isolated from fresh pigeon droppings were different among homes. Although it is well established that Cryptococcus neoformans exists mainly in old pigeon guano, several C. neoformans strains were still isolated from fresh pigeon excreta, providing a clue that live cryptococcal cells could move through the gastrointestinal tract of the pigeons. Eight genera identified from fresh droppings of domestic pigeons further confirm that pigeons serve as reservoirs, carriers and even spreaders of Cryptococcus species and other medically significant yeasts. The proportion of pathogenic yeasts in all isolates is more than 90 %.  相似文献

Aims: Studies of pigeon‐borne yeasts have tended to focus on species, such as Cryptococcus neoformans and Candida albicans, with scant attention to feral pigeons in Korea. We studied the prevalence of yeasts from faecal samples of feral pigeons obtained in various public places in Seoul, Korea, and assessed their potential capacity as human pathogens. Methods and Results: Three hundred and six pigeon faeces samples were collected at city squares and parks in 21 localities in Seoul and Seoul Grand Park and analysed for yeast with conventional methods. Of the 306 samples, 126 (41·2%) were positive for yeast. Seventeen species of yeast were identified. The most frequent species were Candida glabrata (34·1%), Candida famata (12·7%), Cryptococcus albidus (14·3%) and Cryptococcus laurentii (7·9%). The yeast isolates were tested for virulence. Of the 116 isolates (ten isolates missing), 70·7% (n = 82) grew at 37°C. All the Cryptococcus spp. isolates possessed a capsule, 16·4% (n = 19) produced melanin, and 33·6% (n = 39) produced proteinase. Two Ca. glabrata, a Ca. famata and Ca. albicans as well as three C. neoformans, a C. laurentii and Ca. albicans isolates had three virulence factors. Accordingly, 29·3% (n = 34) isolates possessed more than two virulence factors except capsule formation. Conclusions: These results of this study indicate that feral pigeons harbour a variety of yeasts and are a reservoir of human pathogenic fungi. Significance and Impact of the Study: This study is the first time about the microflora (fungi) presents in faecal samples collected from a variety of public areas throughout Seoul, Korea.  相似文献

Seventy-two pigeon dropping samples were collected from 26 different localities in Seoul and investigated for the occurrence of Cryptococcus neoformans. Seventeen samples from 8 different localities were found to be positive for C. neoformans. All isolates were obtained from withered pigeon droppings. Identification and serotyping of the isolates were determined by means of serological testing and DNA fingerprinting. All isolates belonged to C. neoformans var. grubbi (serotype A).  相似文献

Basal metabolic rate (MR), body temperature (T(b)) and wet thermal conductance (C(wet)) of three tropical species of fruit-doves were investigated at ambient temperatures (T(a)) of 11-33 degrees C in activity (alpha) and rest (rho) phases to investigate the possible effect of obligate frugivory on the physiology of columbids. The basal metabolic rates of Ptilinopus melanospila (black-naped fruit-dove, 94 g), Drepanoptila holosericea (cloven-feathered dove, 198 g) and Ducula pinon (Pinon's imperial pigeon, 748 g) are 20-38% lower than predicted for all birds, including granivorous columbid species from temperate and tropical regions. The MR was minimal at a T(a) value of approximately 30 degrees C (=lower critical temperature, T(lc)) for all three species, indicating that these rainforest birds are not able to withstand high ambient temperatures as well as arid-adapted members of the pigeon family. Minimal wet-thermal conductance was, on average, higher than expected, indicating poor insulation in these tropical birds. Body temperatures were as expected; however, below T(lc) the body temperatures decreased to levels of 35-36 degrees C (T(a)=12 degrees C).  相似文献

Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii are pathogenic yeasts that cause cryptococcosis. These fungi were commonly associated with pigeon droppings and plant materials. The habitat of these pathogens has not been yet studied in Tunisia, although the ecology of these yeasts must be elucidated in order to establish surveillance programs and to prevent infections. The aim of this survey was to recover C. neoformans and C. gattii environmental isolates from pigeon droppings and plant materials in different areas of Sfax region, Tunisia. Nine hundred and fifty samples from leaves, wood, flowers, fruits and soil around trunk bases of 40 almond (Prunus dulcis) and 60 eucalyptus trees were collected as well as 250 pigeon droppings samples from different sites: buildings (n = 150), houses (n = 50) and zoo (n = 50). The identification of Cryptococcus neoformans complex was confirmed using the ID32C auxanogram panel (BioMérieux, Marcy l’Etoile, France); species were determined by multiplex PCR using the CN70 and CN49 primers, and mating type was determined by PCR. C. neoformans was recovered from 26 specimens of pigeon droppings (10.4%). This yeast was obtained more frequently from dry droppings (9.2%) than from moist droppings (1.2%). The mating type was determined. All the 31 environmental strains of C. neoformans and C. gattii were MATα. Out of 700 samples tested from 100 trees, only 5 isolates of Cryptococcus neoformans species complex were recovered (0.6%), two isolates of C. gattii and one isolate of C. neoformans were recovered from the wood of E. camaldulensis trees, and only two isolates of C. gattii were recovered from the wood of almond trees (Prunus dulcis Mill. var. zaaf and var. achek). These two Tunisian almond tree varieties were recorded for the first time in Africa as hosts for C. gattii. These results add new information to the ecology and epidemiology of C. neoformans species complex in Tunisia.  相似文献

Nine hundred and eighty three specimens of pigeon droppings, collected in different regions of northern Iran, were examind. Of these samples, 175 (17.8%) were positive for Cryptococcus neoformans. All isolates obtained were C. neoformans var. neoformans. Most of these isolates of C. neoformans were from pigeon shelters. There were significant differences in isolation frequency between pigeon shelters and the other collection sites. The activities of xylitol dehydrogenase and xylose reductase in the yeasts Candida shehatae, C. didensiae, C. intermediae, C. tropicalis, Kluyveromyces marxianus, Pichia stipitis, P. guillermondii, Pachysolen tannophilus, and Torulopsis molishiama were studied at different oxygen transfer rates (OTRs) to the fermentation medium (0, 5, and 140 mmol O2/(1 h)). The activities of these enzymes were maximum in the yeasts P. stipitis and C. shehatae. The xylitol dehydrogenase of all the yeasts was NAD-dependent, irrespective of the intensity of aeration. The xylose reductase of the yeasts C. didensiae, C. intermediae, C. tropicalis, Kl. marxianus, P. guillermondii, and T. molishiama was NADPH-dependent, whereas the xylose reductase of P. stipitis, C. shehatae, and Pa. tannophilus was specific for both NADPH and NADH. The effect of OTR on the activities of the different forms of xylitol dehydrogenase and xylose reductase in the xylose-assimilating yeasts is discussed.  相似文献

From May 1999 to April 2000, serotypes of clinical and environmental isolates of Cryptococcus neoformans were studied in Chiang Mai province, northern Thailand. Three hundred and eighty-five environmental samples, of which 100 were dove droppings, 55 pigeon droppings and 230 eucalyptus flower, were collected from 7 Amphoes in Chiang Mai. C. neoformans was isolated from 45 of 100 (45.0%) dove dropping samples, 9 of 55 (16.4%) pigeon dropping samples and 2 of 230 (0.9%) eucalyptus flower samples. Serotypes of 56 environmental isolates and 75 clinical isolates of C. neoformans,obtained during the same period, were determined by the slide agglutination test. Fifty-six environmental and 74 clinical isolates belonged to C. neoformans serotype A (C. neoformans var. grubii), and only one clinical isolate belonged to C. neoformans serotype AD. The isolation of C. neoformans var. grubii from eucalyptus flower samples suggests contamination of avian droppings. PCR-fingerprinting, using (GACA)4 as a primer, discriminated 131 clinical and environmental isolates into 2 groups (group I and II). Seventy-five clinical and 54 environmental isolates were of group I, which had two major specific bands of approximately 1,250 and 960 base pairs. Two environmental isolates, one from pigeon excreta and the other from a eucalyptus flower sample were of group II, which had two major specific bands of approximately 1,180 and 500 base pairs.  相似文献

New antibiotics, T1801 A, B, C, and D, were isolated from the culture broth of Pseudomonas sp. SC-1801. Their structures were found by spectroscopic analyses to be tri- and tetra(methylthio) derivatives of hydroquinone (T1801 A and C) or p-benzoquinone (T1801 B and D). They are new quinone and hydroquinone antibiotics and are active against Gram-positive bacteria, some fungi, and yeasts.  相似文献

A total of 436 milk samples from non-infected and 80 from infected quarters were investigated: 24.5% of the samples collected from non-infected and 55% of those collected from infected quarters were positive. Normal milk yielded not less than 16 different species and among them many potentially pathogenic yeast species such as C. parapsilosis, C. guilliermondii, C. tropicalis, C. glabrata and T. asahii, all five able to grow at 40 ° C. In contrast, the yeasts isolated from infected quarters were from 3 species: C. kefyr, C. catenulata and C. lambica, which were also among the yeasts species recovered from normal milk. Among the three species, only one i.e. Candida kefyr is able to grow above 40 ° C and from there can be considered as potentially pathogenic, even if bacterial association is necessary to cause mastitis.  相似文献

House dust contains bacteria, mycelial fungi, microarthropods, and yeasts. The house dust samples collected in 25 apartments in Moscow and the Moscow region were found to contain yeasts belonging to the genera Candida, Cryptococcus, Debaryomyces, Rhodotorula, Sporobolomyces, and Trichosporon. The most frequently encountered microorganisms were typical epiphytic yeasts, such as Cryptococcus diffluens and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa, which are capable of long-term preservation in an inactive state. The direct source of epiphytic yeasts occurring in the house dust might be the indoor plants, which were contaminated with these yeasts, albeit to a lesser degree than outdoor plants. Along with the typical epiphytic yeasts, the house dust contained the opportunistic yeast pathogens Candida catenulata, C. guillermondii, C. haemulonii, C. rugosa, and C. tropicalis, which are known as the causal agents of candidiasis. We failed to reveal any correlation between the abundance of particular yeast species in the house dust, residential characteristics, and the atopic dermatitis of the inhabitants.  相似文献

Wide frequency band ECG and vectorcardiogram in anesthetized pigeon and mouse were studied from the standpoint of comparison. The key results were as follows: in pigeon, the direction of the main QRS was inverted in leads II, III and aVF, and upright in lead aVR, which was contrary to that in mouse. The T wave was upright in leads II, III and aVF, but inverted in lead aVR in pigeon, which was the same as that in mouse. In pigeon, there was a large notch on the upstroke of the S wave in lead II without exception, but there was no such notch in the corresponding lead in mouse. The QRS vector loop in the frontal plane lay between -90 and -180 degrees in pigeon, while that of mouse lay between 0 and 90 degrees. The relative power of high frequency range (80-1000 Hz) of the QRS in lead II was approximately 15% in pigeon, but 55% in mouse. The direction of the main QRS was contrary in pigeon and mouse because the subepicardial muscles were depolarized before the subendocardial muscles in pigeon, but the latter were depolarized before the former in mouse. The direction of the T waves was the same in both pigeon and mouse because subepicardial muscles were all repolarized before subendocardial muscles.  相似文献

Candida parapsilosis, C. tropicalis, and Torulopsis glabrata were the human-associated yeasts most frequently isolated from quahogs, oysters, and mussels collected from four estuarine areas along the northern shore of Long Island Sound. Some inconsistency and seasonal variation in the occurrence of these and other yeast species were noted. In particular, C. albicans densities were greatest during colder months in the more heavily polluted waters. A total of 347 yeasts were isolated and cultured at 37 degrees C and, of these, 219 of 62% were human-associated forms. Generally, these yeasts in the animals sampled reflected the overall pollution status of the estuary from which they were taken. This study represents a clear demonstration of potentially pathogenic yeasts in a valuable marine resource.  相似文献

Fifteen strains of anamorphic yeasts isolated from various natural substrates collected in various places in Thailand were found to represent two novel species of anamorphic yeast genus Candida based on the sequence analysis of the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit rRNA genes, chemotaxonomic and conventional properties used for the classification of yeasts. These strains are located in the clade including Candida etchellsii and Candida magnoliae. Fourteen strains represented by ST-490(T) (BCC 15176(T)=NBRC 106439(T)= CBS 11674(T)) are closely related to Candida sorbosivorans in the D1/D2 sequences but 11 nucleotides (2.4%) were substituted. The remaining strain, ST-594(T) (=BCC 15278(T)=NBRC 106446(T)=CBS 11673(T)) showed a close relationship to Candida geochares but 21 nucleotides (4.7%) were substituted. Apparently, these strains represent two novel Candida species of the Starmerella clade. The two species are described as Candida potacharoeniae sp. nov. and Candida spenceri sp. nov. in the present paper. Like the most species of this clade, the two species contain galactose in the cells in addition to glucose and mannose and have high mol% G + C of 54.4-55.9 and 54.9, respectively.  相似文献

The aim of the present work was to determine the presence and quantity of yeasts (Candida) and rods of Enterobacteriaceae family in the ontocenosis of vagina in women. Also, we aimed at finding which species of Enterobacteriaceae accompany the yeasts. Furthermore we aimed at determining the etiological factor (Candida yeasts or Enterobacteriaceae rods) causing identical clinical symptoms such as burn, itch, leucorrhea. Vagina secretion collected from 649 patients constituted the material for examination Candida. In 137 patients (which constituted 21.1%) Candida yeasts were found (group I). These patients were additionally divided into 2 subgroups (I a and I b). Group I a consisted of 92 patients (14.2%) who exhibited the presence of Candida without the accompanying rods of Enterobacteriaceae and group I b consisting of 45 patients (6.9%), in whom Candida was found together with the rods. 171 patients (26.3%) were classified to group II, who had only Enterobacteriaceae rods in the vagina. Among Candida yeasts, the most common species were C. albicans, C. krusei, C. tropicalis. The most common rods of Enterobacteriaceae family were E. coli and P. mirabilis. The bacterium which most frequently accompanied the yeasts was E. coli. Considering the fact that patients in group I and patients in group II reported similar problems, the role of the etiological factor in the vaginal inflammatory processes should be analyzed.  相似文献
