The root structure ofPodostemum subulatum is investigated and compared with that ofZeylanidium olivaceum. Podostemum has thread- or ribbon-like roots. The root tip consists of an inner apical meristem and a single-layered root cap. From roots arise numerous shoots of endogeneous origin. Their vascular bundle isab initio connected with the root bundle.By the simple (reduced) apical zonation, the roots ofPodostemum subulatum appear more advanced than the crustose roots ofZeylanidium olivaceum, which bear an ordinary (though asymmetrical) root cap. With regard to the endogeneous root-borne shoots, however,Zeylanidium appears more advanced because of the shoot dimorphism. The floriferous shoots have a short axis that grows plagiotropously above the crust surface, whereas the axes of the vegetative shoots are extremely short and remain, together with the apical meristem, within the crust. Only the leaves protrude from the crust surface.  相似文献

The formation of an endo-complex between p-allylcalix[4]arene and t-butylamine was described by Gutsche in 1985. However, for a comparable system, it has been shown using NOE methods that the amine does not reside inside the calix. Instead, an exo-calix complex is formed. A reevaluation suggests that the previous conclusion is an artifact due to improper NMR-data processing. DFT (RB3LYP/6–31G(d)) calculations confirm the higher stability of the exo-complex over its endo-counterpart. Research on early-divergent angiosperms, including Amborella, the putative sister to all other extant angiosperms, is increasingly used as a yardstick to infer the nature of the hypothetical ancestral angiosperm. Some traits are relatively diverse (and hence relatively labile) in this phylogenetic grade, compared with the more derived eudicot clade, in which developmental patterns have become increasingly canalized. One of the many mysteries surrounding the origin of the angiosperms is the evolutionary origin of the Polygonum-type embryo sac (monosporic, eight-nucleate and seven-celled) that occurs in the majority of flowering plants. Observations on the megagametophyte of Amborella are conflicting, but a recent report of a supernumerary synergid in this genus raises the question of whether the Polygonum-type embryo sac is derived by duplication of a four-nucleate structure or by reduction from a multicellular structure.  相似文献

The genus Pythium,with slightly over 280 described species,has been classified traditionally with other filamentous,coenocytic,sporangia-producing fungi as "Phycomyetes".However,with recent advances in chemical,ultrastructural and molecular studies,Pythium spp.are now considered as "fungus-like organisms" or "pseudo-fungi" and are placed in the Kingdom Chromista or Kingdom Straminopila,distinct from the true fungi of the Kingdom Fungi or Kingdom Mycota.They are widely distributed throughout the world as soil saprophytes or plant pathogens.Because of the warm moist maritime climate,Taiwan,China,is especially rich in Pythium species.To date,48 species of Pythium have been reported from Taiwan,China,with the dominant species being Py.vexans,Py.spinosum,Py.splendens,Py.aphanidermatum,Py.dissotocum and Py.acanthicum.There is no definite geographical distribution of Pythium spp.in Taiwan,China.Twenty nine species of Pythium have proven to be plant pathogens attacking a wide variety of woody and herbaceous plants primarily causing pre-and post-emergence seedling damping-off,root rot,stem rot and rotting of fruits,tubers and ginger rhizomes,resulting in serious economic losses.The most important plant pathogenic species include Py.aphanidermatum and Py.Myriotylum,which are most active during the hot and wet summer months;whereas Py.splendens,Py.spinosum,Py.ultimum and Py.irregulare cause the greatest damage in the cool winter.Most Pythium spp.are non-specific pathogens,infecting mainly juvenile or succulent tissues.This review attempts to assess the taxonomic position of the genus Pythium and provide details of the historical development of the study of Pythium as pathogens in Taiwan,China,causing diseases of sugarcane,trees,vegetables,fruits,specialty crops and flowering plants,as well as measures to control these diseases.Of special note is the introduction of the S-H mixture which,when used as soil amendment,effectively controls many soil-borne Pythium diseases during the early stages of plant growth.The diversity of Pythium species in Taiwan,China,is discussed in comparison with the situation in the mainland of China and suggestions are made to fully utilize Pythium spp.as agents for biological control,in industry and medicine.  相似文献

The study of bryophytes forms an obvious part of school, college, and university courses which deal with cytology and developmental behaviour. They are readily obtained, conveniently cultured, and require fewer specialized skills than are necessary for similar work on other organisms. Information on preparing mitotic chromosomes for examination is provided, as are details of a technique by which Giemsa C-banding of chromosomes becomes for the first time a realistic proposition at all levels of education. Practical firsthand experience of the latter technique provides a useful way of coordinating the teaching of microscopic and molecular aspects of cell biology. Cytological behaviour can also be related to experiments on developmental aspects of the life cycle, a cycle which is noted for its well-marked alternation of generations. These include suggestions for monitoring the seasonal maturation of gametangia and sporophytes, as well as for examining photolropic responses made in liverworts by diploid setae and haploid archegoniophores.  相似文献

Summary The quantitative imaging of lithium distribution, in histological sections of 15-days old mouse embryos (whose mother had been submitted to Li-treatment), was performed using6Li isotope as tracer,6Li(n,)3H nuclear reaction for detection, and dielectric track detectors. Despite the particular difficulties of cryosectioning the embryos without disturbing the lithium distribution, the Li regionalization appeared to be very clear-cut. The ectomesodermic tissues were significantly more loaded with lithium than the endodermic ones. This is probably related to the ectomesodermic tissues being also those most sensitive to the teratogenic effect of lithium. The Li-distribution in the embryo brain was almost homogeneous, instead of being heterogeneous as in adult brain. The mean Li-concentration in the embryo brain was not much below the Li concentration in the grey matter of the mother brain, but it was significantly larger than that in the white matter of the mother brain. Our results are discussed in the context of teratogenic effects observed in situ during mammalian development.  相似文献

Summary A lectin with an affinity for -d-galactoside-containing saccharides is present in the developing yolk sac from the chick embryo at stages from 2 to 7 days of incubation. This activity is present in the area vitellina (less differentiated) and the area vasculosa (more differentiated). In both areas, lectin activity increases significantly during the spreading of the yolk sac up to 5 days of incubation. At all of the stages studied lectin activity was significantly higher in the area vasculosa, as compared to the area vitellina.Lectins were purified by affinity chromatography and examined by SDS-PAGE. Under reducing conditions two components are evident. A more prominent band of subunit molecular weight of 14,200±100 for the area vitellina and 13,700±300 for the area vasculosa and a second band with molecular weight of about 68,000±700 and 68,000±1,200 for the area vitellina and area vasculosa respectively, were observed. The -d-galactoside-binding lectin appears to be similar if not identical to that of the early chick blastoderm.  相似文献

Microbial technology is exceptional among human activities and endeavours in its range of applications that benefit humanity, even exceeding those of chemistry. What is more, microbial technologists are among the most creative scientists, and the scope of the field continuously expands as new ideas and applications emerge. Notwithstanding this diversity of applications, given the dire predictions for the fate of the surface biosphere as a result of current trajectories of global warming, the future of microbial biotechnology research must have a single purpose, namely to help secure the future of life on Earth. Everything else will, by comparison, be irrelevant. Crucially, microbes themselves play pivotal roles in climate (Cavicchioli et al., Nature Revs Microbiol 17 : 569–586, 2019). To enable realization of their full potential in humanity’s effort to survive, development of new and transformative global warming-relevant technologies must become the lynchpin of microbial biotechnology research and development. As a consequence, microbial biotechnologists must consider constraining their usual degree of freedom, and re-orienting their focus towards planetary-biosphere exigences. And they must actively seek alliances and synergies with others to get the job done as fast as humanly possible; they need to enthusiastically embrace and join the global effort, subordinating where necessary individual aspirations to the common good (the amazing speed with which new COVID-19 diagnostics and vaccines were developed and implemented demonstrates what is possible given creativity, singleness of purpose and funding). In terms of priorities, some will be obvious, others less so, with some only becoming revealed after dedicated effort yields new insights/opens new vistas. We therefore refrain from developing a priority list here. Rather, we consider what is likely to happen to the Earth’s biosphere if we (and the rest of humanity) fail to rescue it. We do so with the aim of galvanizing the formulation and implementation of strategic and financial science policy decisions that will maximally stimulate the development of relevant new microbial technologies, and maximally exploit available technologies, to repair existing environmental damage and mitigate against future deterioration.  相似文献

Summary A mechanosensitive ciliated cell type of the polyp Stauridiosarsia producta (Hydrozoa) was investigated by means of electron microscopy. These cells bear at their apical cell surface a modified cilium, a set of seven stereovilli, a so-called pseudovillar system and a large vacuole. Cilium and stereovilli are interconnected like the cnidocil apparatus of hydrozoan nematocytes which is responsible for mechanoelectric transduction. The vacuole is enclosed by and linked to the pseudovillar system by a microtubular basket. Considering its structural organization and physiological activities the ciliated sensory cell closely resembles a nematocyte that has lost its ability ot produce a nematocyst.  相似文献

We have studied the pathways of cell communication in embryos of the mollusc Lymnaea stagnalis in which the developmental fate of a cell or a group of cells is known from cell lineage studies. We iontophoretically injected Lucifer Yellow CH and followed the spread of fluorescence between cells interconnected via gap junctions. In early stages all blastomeres appear to be dye-coupled, but later on communication is restricted within compartments. The pattern of cell communication corresponds with the development of compartments with specific cell fates. Dye-spread is limited by communication boundaries which completely or mostly prevent the passage of dye to adjacent compartments with different developmental fates. These boundaries appear progressively during development. Our results suggest that, during the development of Lymnaea, the progressive changes in the pattern of dye spread correspond with the progressive restrictions of the developmental fates of individual cells or groups of cells. We conclude that changes in the pattern of cell communication and in the appearance of communication compartments are not exclusive features of regulative embryos.  相似文献
