The shortening, action potential and Cl-efflux of the excised lower half cortex in the main pulvinus ofMimosa pudica were simultaneously recorded. The mean values±(S.E.) for Cl-efflux and shortening were 183±18 picomoles/mg fresh weight/impulse and 87.0±2.2 μm, respectively.  相似文献

Phytochemical screening of aqueous extract from six medicinal wild plants grown in South-eastern of Tunisia: Atriplex halimus, Teucrium polium, Moricandia arvensis, Deverra tortuoa, Haplophyllum tuberculatum and Polygonum equisetiforme were evaluated. Both decoction and ultrasound assisted extraction were used. Antioxidant, antibacterial proprieties, and phenolic profiling, using LC-ESI-MS method, were assessed. Total polyphenols, flavonoids, and condensed tannins contents ranged from 7.47±0.19 to 22.25±0.49 mg GAE/g Dw, 5.47±0.06 to 7.55±0.07 mg RE/g Dw, and 0.33±0.02 to 19.43±0.64 mg TAE/g Dw, respectively. Moreover, the reducing power and DPPH tests showed that P. equisetiforme (EC50: 12.50±0.50 μg/ml; DPPH⋅+: 213.49±4.24 mg TEAC/g DW), T. polium (EC50: 25.00±1.00 μg/ml; DPPH⋅+: 181.39±9.47 mg TEAC/g DW) as well as H. tuberculatum (EC50: 56.25±0.25 μg/ml; DPPH⋅+: 177.83±5.85 mg TEAC/g DW) extracts were the most effective natural antioxidants. For anti-bacterial activity, the ultrasonic extract of H. tuberculatum showed the highest activity against both P. aeruginosa (13.50±0.71 mm) and S. aureus (13.00±0.00 mm) at 10 mg/ml. Furthermore 24 phenolic compounds were identified, with predominance of quinic acid, gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, syringic acid, p-coumaric acid, trans-ferulic acid, catechin (+), trans-cinnamic and silymarin. These results were further consolidated by to heatmap clustering with P. equisetiforme, H. tuberculatum, T. polium as the main antioxidant and antibacterial sources which supports their domestication and industrial use.  相似文献

Some studies showed that anesthetics reduce the response of physical stimuli in Mimosa pudica and in Venus Flytrap (Dionaea muscipula), peculiar plants that have the ability to respond to touch stimuli. In this research we tested the effects of ketamine, lidocaine, diethyl ether, and amlodipine on the movements of Mimosa pudica and Venus Flytrap. With a literature review, we tried to bring elements to theorize about the interaction of these substances with these plants. The angular displacement in Mimosa´s petiole and in Dionaea leaves is what was measured to compare the drugs group with control groups.  相似文献

The sensitive plant Mimosa pudica is made insensitive by a brief treatment with colchicine. A high concentration of colchicine binding protein is present in the fresh actively moving leaves of M. pudica. This protein was partially characterized and compared with the animal brain tubulin. This colchicine binding activity is very low in the insensitive variety of Mimosa, namely Mimosa rubricaulis.  相似文献

Summary

Firstly, the author describes the anatomical and histological structures of Mimosa pudica L. during the stages of development of the young plant prior to the appearing of cambium. She then discusses, in the light of previous literature on the subject, the three principal features of Mimosa pudica: herbaceous bearing, stable tetrarchy with intercotyledonal bundles along the plumule, and small sized germination.

Finally, the author concludes that Mimosa pudica appears to be an individual with tree-like rather than herbaceous symmetry (stable tetrarchy), in which the size of germination has diminished parallelly to reduction in size of the adult individual.  相似文献

Conditions under which some plants emit carbon disulfide (CS2) in the soil are unknown. A pot assembly was constructed to measure soil CS2 emissions by Mimosa pudica under conditions of undisturbed growth, root injury, and drought stress. When M. pudica was grown without disturbance, soil CS2 emissions were below the limit of detection (0.1 ng CS2 mL–1) for the entire 8-wk sampling period. However, when the roots of 6-wk-old M. pudica plants were cut to a depth of 10 cm, a maximum of 0.5 and 0.4 ng CS2 mL–1 was emitted within minutes at the 5- and 10-cm depths, respectively. These emissions declined slowly to undetectable levels after 50 min. No detectable CS2 emissions were observed at the 0- and 15-cm depths. No CS2 was emitted when 6-wk-old M. pudica plants were subjected to drought stress, however, when the same plants were watered, a maximum of 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 ng CS2 mL–1 was emitted within minutes at the 5-, 10- and 15-cm depths, respectively. These emissions were detectable for at least 2 hr at the 10- and 15-cm depths. No detectable CS2 emissions were observed at the 0-cm depth after watering. No detectable CS2 emissions were observed at any depth under any conditions of undisturbed growth, root injury, or drought stress followed by watering for assemblies containing either no plants or Albizia julibrissin, a plant that is closely related to M. pudica but does not emit CS2. Mimosa pudica emitted detectable CS2 under conditions of root injury and rewetting of dry soil but not under conditions of undisturbed growth. Release of such a biocidal sulfide only during conditions of root injury or rewetting of dry soil would be advantageous to M. pudica.  相似文献

Cellular and chloroplast lipids of the leaves of Mimosa pudica have been analysed. Qualitatively the total lipid composition of this plant is similar to that reported for the photosynthetic tissues of other plants. Chloroplast lipids show some resemblance to those of algae. The cerebroside fraction of both leaves and chloroplasts contains a polyunsaturated fatty acid (20:4ω3) and a long chain sphingosine base whose Rf value coincides with that from ox brain cerebroside and not with that of phytosphingosine from spinach.  相似文献

Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) is a process that hydrolysis urea by microbial urease to fill the pore spaces of soil with induced calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitates, which eventually results in improved or solidified soil. This research explored the possibility of using dairy manure pellets (DMP) and palm oil mill effluent (POME) as alternative nutrient sources for Sporosarcina pasteurii cultivation and CaCO3 bioprecipitation. Different concentrations (20–80 g l−1) of DMP and POME were used to propagate the cells of S. pasteurii under laboratory conditions. The measured CaCO3 contents for MICP soil specimens that were treated with bacterial cultures grown in DMP medium (60%, w/v) was 15·30 ± 0·04 g ml−1 and POME medium (40%, v/v) was 15·49 ± 0·05 g ml−1 after 21 days curing. The scanning electron microscopy showed that soil treated with DMP had rhombohedral structure-like crystals with smooth surfaces, whilst that of POME entailed ring-like cubical formation with rough surfaces Electron dispersive X-ray analysis was able to identify a high mass percentage of chemical element compositions (Ca, C and O), whilst spectrum from Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the vibration peak intensities for CaCO3. Atomic force microscopy further showed clear topographical differences on the crystal surface structures that were formed around the MICP treated soil samples. These nutrient sources (DMP and POME) showed encouraging potential cultivation mediums to address high costs related to bacterial cultivation and biocementation treatment.  相似文献

ARhizobium species isolated from the root nodules of the sensitive plant,Mimosa pudica, produced 60 mg/L of 3-indoleacetic acid (IAA) froml-tryptophan in culture. The production of IAA started simultaneously with the growth and had no different growth or production phase. The stationary phase of growth was reached after 55 h, but the production of IAA increased gradually up to 80 h, and then remained constant. The IAA production could be promoted in the culture medium up to 365% by supplementing the medium with maltose, CuSO4 and Triton X-100.  相似文献

Bot. 39: 209–221. Colchicine at 1 x 10–3 mol dm–3 does not affectthe seismonastic movement of Mimosa pudica leaves but disruptsmicrotubules in motor cells. Vinblastine at 5 x 10–3 moldm–3 does not affect this movement and partly disruptsmicrotubules. Vinblastine at 1 x 10–4 mol dm–3 alwaysdisrupts microtubules, even after a 12 h reversibility whenthe movement is restored. These drugs, applied at the same respectiveconcentrations, do not alter cytoplasmic and vacuolar fibrils.Cytochalasin B and phalloidin alter the seismonastic movementof Mimosa leaves when applied at concentrations of 1.25 x 10–3and 2.4 x 10–4 mol dm–3 respectively. These drugs,used at the same respective concentrations, also affect themotor cell structure and, in particular, modify the arrangementand the structure of the fibrils but they do not destroy themicrotubules. These data suggest that microtubules are not directly involvedin the seismonastic reaction whereas fibrils, formed by thin(3.0 nm wide) filaments, may be implicated in this reaction. Thigmonastic or seismonastic movements in Mimosa pudica, such as the response to touch, appear to be regulated by electrical, hydrodynamical and chemical signal transduction. The pulvinus of Mimosa pudica shows elastic properties, and we found that electrically or mechanically induced movements of the petiole were accompanied by a change of the pulvinus shape. As the petiole falls, the volume of the lower part of the pulvinus decreases and the volume of the upper part increases due to the redistribution of water between the upper and lower parts of the pulvinus. This hydroelastic process is reversible. During the relaxation of the petiole, the volume of the lower part of the pulvinus increases and the volume of the upper part decreases. Redistribution of ions between the upper and lower parts of a pulvinus causes fast transport of water through aquaporins and causes a fast change in the volume of the motor cells. Here, the biologically closed electrochemical circuits in electrically and mechanically anisotropic pulvini of Mimosa pudica are analyzed using the charged capacitor method for electrostimulation at different voltages. Changing the polarity of electrodes leads to a strong rectification effect in a pulvinus and to different kinetics of a capacitor discharge if the applied initial voltage is 0.5 V or higher. The electrical properties of Mimosa pudica''s pulvini were investigated and the equivalent electrical circuit within the pulvinus was proposed to explain the experimental data. Summary When young plants of Hordeum vulgare. Bryonia dioica. Cucumis sativus. Phaseolus vulgaris. Mimosa pudica. and Ricinus communis. were given a gentle mechanical stimulus by rubbing the internodes for about 10 s once or twice daily, elongation was significantly retarded. Plants of Cucurbita pepo Pisum sativum and Triticum aestivum did not exhibit any such response. The initial response to rubbing was very rapid, elongation stopping less than 3 min after application of the stimulus. When the stimulus was discontinued after 7 days, elongation accelerated, reaching a normal or supernormal rate within 3 or 4 days. Mechanical stimulation also affected aspects of growth and development other than stem elongation. In Mimosa pudica, flower bud production was retarded, as was the growth of the tendrils, leaves, and petioles in Bryonia dioica. It is suggested that this response be called thigmomorphogenesis, and that it represents an adaptation designed to protect plants from the stresses produced by high winds and moving animals. Some evidence indicates that thigmomorphogenesis may be mediated by ethylene.  相似文献

Thigmonastic movements in the sensitive plant Mimosa pudica L., associated with fast responses to environmental stimuli, appear to be regulated through electrical and chemical signal transductions. The thigmonastic responses of M. pudica can be considered in three stages: stimulus perception, electrical signal transmission and induction of mechanical, hydrodynamical and biochemical responses. We investigated the mechanical movements of the pinnae and petioles in M. pudica induced by the electrical stimulation of a pulvinus, petiole, secondary pulvinus or pinna by a low electrical voltage and charge. The threshold value was 1.3–1.5 V of applied voltage and 2 to 10 µC of charge for the closing of the pinnules. Both voltage and electrical charge are responsible for the electro‐stimulated closing of a leaf. The mechanism behind closing the leaf in M. pudica is discussed. The hydroelastic curvature mechanism closely describes the kinetics of M. pudica leaf movements.  相似文献

In tropical Australian freshwaters, uranium (U) is of potential ecotoxicological concern, largely as a consequence of mining activities. Although the toxicity of uranium to Australian freshwater biota is comprehensive, by world standards, few data are available on the effects of physicochemical variables, such as hardness, alkalinity, pH and organic matter, on uranium speciation and bioavailability. This study determined the individual effects of water hardness (6.6, 165 and 330 mg l-1 as CaCO3) and alkalinity (4.0 and 102 mg l-1 as CaCO3), at a constant pH (6.0), on the toxicity (96 h population growth) of uranium to Hydra viridissima (green hydra). A 50-fold increase in hardness (Ca and Mg concentration) resulted in a 92% (two-fold) decrease in the toxicity of uranium to H. viridissima [i.e. an increase in the EC50 value and 95% confidence interval from 114 (107-121) to 219 (192-246) µg l-1]. Conversely, at a constant hardness (165 mg l-1 as CaCO3), the toxicity of uranium to H. viridissima was not significantly (P > 0.05) affected by a 25-fold increase in alkalinity (carbonate concentration) [i.e. EC50 values of 177 (166-188) and 171 (150-192) µg l-1 at 4.0 and 102 mg l-1 as CaCO3, respectively]. A knowledge of the relationship between water chemistry variables, including hardness and alkalinity, and uranium toxicity is useful for predicting the potential ecological detriment in aquatic systems, and can be used to relax national water quality guidelines on a site-specific basis.  相似文献

This work aimed to investigate, for the first time, the chemical composition, antioxidant, antiparasitic, cytotoxicity, and antimicrobial activities of the aromatic plant Limonium oleifolium Mill. essential oil (EO) and organic extracts. L. oleifolium aerial parts essential oil was analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS, and 46 constituents representing 98.25±1.12 % of the oil were identified. γ-Muurolene (10.81±0.07 %), cis-caryophyllene (7.71±0.06 %), o-cymene (7.07±0.01 %) and α-copaene (5.02±0.05 %) were the essential oil main compounds. The antioxidant activity of L. oleifolium EO and organic extracts (MeOH, CHCl3, AcOEt, BuOH) was explored using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), ABTS, β-carotene/linoleic acid, cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC), and ferric reducing power assays. The results showed that L. oleifolium EO exhibit antioxidant capacity (IC50=17.40±1.32 μg/mL for DPPH assay, IC50=29.82±1.08 μg/mL for β-carotene assay, IC50=25.23±1.01 μg/mL for ABTS assay, IC50=9.11±0.08 μg/mL for CUPRAC assay and IC50=19.41±2.06 mg/mL for reducing power assay). Additionally, the EO showed significant activity against trophozoite form of Acanthamoeba castellanii (IC50=7.48±0.41 μg/mL) and promastigote form of Leishmania amazonensis (IC50=19.36±1.06 μg/mL) and low cytotoxicity on murine macrophages (LC50 90.23±1.09 μg/mL), as well as good antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella oxytoca, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These results suggest that L. oleifolium essential oil is a valuable source of bioactive compounds presenting antioxidant, antiparasitic, and antimicrobial activities. The skeletal dry weight of the 4.4 ± 0.2 cm size class of Asterias rubens L. from Kiel Bay in the western Baltic is 0.34 ± 0.08 g. The sum of calcium and magnesium carbonates in the skeleton amounts to 94.0 ± 1.3% while the individual concentrations are 86.9 ± 1.3% CaCO3 and 7.1 ± 0.7% MgCO3. The MgCO3 is 4% lower than expected for a magnesium calcite precipitated under Baltic temperature conditions (8°C). Strontium was not determined but strontium carbonate is known to be in the region of 0.4%. The remainder is organic matter and this gives rise to 2.9 ± 1.3% organic carbon.Animals studied were at the ‘waiting stage’ and their actual growth was minimal. Uptake of 45Ca in the skeleton consists of a fast step followed by a slow step. The fast step is attributed to saturation of exchangeable skeletal pools while the slow step is due to net deposition of CaCO3. Skeletal growth at the waiting stage calculated from the second rate constant was found to be 0.76 μg CaCO3j-mg skeleton?1 · day?1 or 0.09% · day?1 compared with 9.3 μg CaCO3 · mg skeletont1̄ · day?1 or 1.1% · day?1 at log phase. The isotope method is considered superior to size-frequency analysis in that it is capable of detecting differences in growth rate in individuals of the same size class and thus provides an insight into asteroid population structure.  相似文献

Background

The aim of the present study was to evaluate clinical efficacy of constant rate infusions (CRIs) of medetomidine–propofol combined with sevoflurane anesthesia in Thoroughbred racehorses undergoing arthroscopic surgery. Thirty horses were sedated intravenously (IV) with medetomidine (6.0 μg/kg) and midazolam (0.02 mg/kg) and induced IV with ketamine (1.0 mg/kg) and propofol (1.0 mg/kg). These horses were randomly allocated to three groups and maintained with sevoflurane and CRI of either medetomidine (3.0 μg/kg/h) (Group M; n?=?10); or medetomidine (3.0 μg/kg/h) and propofol (3.0 mg/kg/h) (Group MP3; n?=?10); or medetomidine (3.0 μg/kg/h) and propofol (6.0 mg/kg/h) (Group MP6; n?=?10). End-tidal sevoflurane concentration (ETSEVO), cardiovascular parameters, plasma propofol concentration, and recovery time and quality were compared among groups. Data were analyzed by using ANOVA with Tukey’s multiple comparison test, considering P?<?0.05 significant.

Results

ETSEVO (%) was 2.4?±?0.1 in Group M, 1.7?±?0.2 in Group MP3, and 1.4?±?0.2 in Group MP6; ETSEVO declined significantly in a propofol-dose-dependent manner. The rates of dobutamine infusion (μg/kg/min) required to keep the mean arterial blood pressure over 70 mmHg were significantly lower in Group MP3 (0.20?±?0.10) and Group MP6 (0.15?±?0.06) than in Group M (0.37?±?0.18). Recovery time and quality did not differ among groups. All horses in Group MP3 required only one attempt to stand, and recovery quality was excellent. Plasma propofol concentrations were stable throughout maintenance of anesthesia in Group MP3, whereas those in Group MP6 increased significantly with increasing duration of maintenance.

Conclusions

CRIs of medetomidine–propofol reduced the sevoflurane requirement for surgical anesthesia as the propofol dose increased, compared with a CRI of medetomidine alone. Additionally, the two propofol protocols provided good maintenance of cardiovascular function. CRIs of medetomidine (3.0 μg/kg/h) and propofol (3.0 mg/kg/h) resulted in excellent-quality recovery. This protocol could therefore be an especially useful additive to sevoflurane anesthesia in Thoroughbred racehorses undergoing arthroscopic surgery.

Abstract

Kaempferia galanga is a monocotyledonous plant of the Zingiberaceae family, commonly utilized for medicinal purposes. This study evaluates the effect of different concentrations of sucrose, benzylaminopurine (BA) and photoperiod on in vitro propagation of K. galanga. Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 5 mg L?1 BA and 30 g L?1 sucrose, and a photoperiod with 4 h of light induced the highest shoot proliferation (7.4 ± 1.0 shoots/explant) and the highest number of roots/shoot (31.3 ± 3.2). On the contrary, the maximum shoot height (4.7 ± 0.7 cm) and the highest number of leaves/shoot (4.7 ± 0.2) were obtained from cultures using MS medium supplemented with 30 g L?1 sucrose but without BA, and exposed to 16 h of light. Hence MS medium supplemented with 5 mg L?1 BA and 30 g L?1 sucrose, and incubated under a 4 h light/20 h dark photoperiod was chosen as the optimal protocol for mass multiplication of K. galanga. This in-vitro technique can facilitate the production of a large number of uniform plants of K. galanga, irrespective of the seasonal factor, and could be used as a tool for conservation of the species.  相似文献

Glycine (1–50 mM) increases the rate of the dark-induced (scotonastic) movements and decreases the amplitude and the rate of the light-induced (photonastic) movements of the secondary pulvini of Mimosa pudica leaves. The uptake of glycine is accompanied by a long-lasting dose-dependent increase in the alkalinity of the bathing medium of the excised pulvini. The data are in agreement with a H+-glycine co-transport mechanism within the pulvinar cells. Fusicoccin (50 M), known to promote H+–K+ exchange, antagonizes the effects of glycine on the movements and the alkalization of the bathing medium of the excised pulvini. Luffa echinata Roxb. is one of the neglected medicinal plants. It is an important source of bioactive metabolites and used in several Ayurvedic formulations. In the present analysis, mature leaves and fruits were extracted with acetone, ethanol, acetonitrile, methanol and water. Phytochemicals like total phenolic (TPC), flavonoid (TFC), tannin (TTC), alkaloid (TAC) and terpenoid (TTEC) content were analysed. Further, antioxidant (AOX) activities like 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, 2,2′-azino-bis-(3-ethyl) benzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging, metal chelating activity (MC), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and phosphomolybdenum assay (PMA) were studied. Highest TPC and TFC (189.57 ± 1.9 mg TAE/g extract, 30.48 ± 0.7 mg CE/g extract, respectively) were reported from acetone extract of the leaves. Ethanolic fruit extract showed the highest TTC (13.79 ± 0.2 mg CE/g extract). Acetone and acetonitrile fruit extract revealed maximum TTEC (602.79 ± 3.5 mg UAE/g extract) and moderate TAC (19.96 ± 0.9 mg GE/g extract), respectively. In AOX, highest DPPH (50.52 ± 0.03 mg AAE/g extract) and ABTS (26.78 ± 0.03 mg TE/g extract) radical scavenging reported in methanolic extract of fruit; however, acetone extract of leaf showed highest FRAP (376.89 ± 1.95 mg Fe(II)/g extract) and PMA (326.54 ± 4.73 mg AAE/g extract). In contrast, aqueous extract of leaf and fruit revealed highest metal chelating activity (41.67 ± 0.49 mg EDTA/g extract). In anti-diabetic studies, acetonitrile extract of leaves and fruits exhibited appreciable inhibition of α-amylase (83.33%) and α-glycosidase (77.42%) enzymes. Similarly, acetyl cholinesterase (AChE) inhibition was highest in water (88.91%) and acetone (81.87%) extracts of leaf and fruits. Fruit extracts showed potent anticancer activity against breast (MCF-7) and colon (HT-29) cancer cell lines (LC50 329.36 and 385.17 µg/mL, respectively). RP-HPLC analysis revealed highest cucurbitacin B (CuB) (196.24 ± 1.4 mg/g DW), followed by cucurbitacin I (CuI) and cucurbitacin E (CuE) in the fruits (57.14 ± 4.9 and 2.03 ± 0.03 mg/g DW, respectively). RP-HPLC analysis of extracts revealed presence of gallic acid (GA), catechin (CA), vanillic acid (VA), chlorogenic acid (CHLA) and coumaric acid (COA), in which highest GA found in the fruits (1.26 ± 0.07 mg/g DW). Liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis revealed presence of bioactive compounds from various groups. Based on the present findings, it was revealed that the fruit and leaf of L. echinata can be used as potent bioresource for natural antioxidants, anti-diabetic, and anticancer drug.  相似文献
