Gagea genus, which is native to the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions, has attracted significant attention due to its biodiversity and potential health benefits. In this study, the biochemical composition and biological activities of methanol extracts from various parts of G. taurica were investigated, along with their anatomical and morphological characteristics. The best antimicrobial activity was found to be MeOH extracts of corm and leaf against several Candida strains with MIC=640 μg/mL. The highest level of phenolics together with significant results of antioxidant activities were observed in flowers extracts. The α-amylase inhibition assay results showed that the highest inhibition percentage was observed with acarbose (59 %), followed by leaf extract (43 %). Leaf exhibited the most effective inhibitory activity in AChE inhibition assay, whereas flower demonstrated the most significant inhibitory activity in BChE inhibition assay. Hesperidin was found as 1621.0001 ng/ml value in flower extract and 283.9339 ng/ml value leaf.  相似文献

Two novel chitin-binding peptides, designated Pp-AMP 1 and Pp-AMP 2, which had antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria and fungi, were purified from Japanese bamboo shoots (Phyllostachys pubescens) by a simple procedure based on chitin affinity chromatography. They had the common structural features of the plant defensin family, but they could not be grouped in any type of that family. They showed a high degree of homology to mistletoe toxins.  相似文献

In vitro antimicrobial activity of 21 crude extracts obtained from seven taxa of the genus Teucrium (T. chamaedrys, T. montanum, T. arduini, T. polium, T. scordium subsp. scordium, T. scordium subsp. scordioides and T. botrys) was tested against bacterial and fungal species. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were determined using a microdilution analysis method. Total phenolic content and flavonoid concentrations were measured spectrophotometrically. Total phenols were determined using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and their amounts ranged from 28.49 up to 159.84 mg CA/g of extract (chlorogenic acid equivalent). The amounts of flavonoids ranged from 38.17 up to 190.45 mg RU/g of extract (rutin equivalent).The plant extracts showed greater potential of antibacterial than antifungal activity. A relationship was found between total phenolics and biological activity. The highest level of total phenols was measured in the methanol extracts, which demonstrated higher antimicrobial activity than acetone and ethyl acetate extracts. Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 appeared to be the most sensitive organism. Our results indicate that Teucrium spp extracts are rich sources of phenolic compounds and are promising candidates for further development as natural antimicrobial agents.  相似文献

Summary

Measurements of the net photosynthesis and dark respiration rates of excised twigs from Betula pubescens Ehrh. subsp. odorata (Bechst.) Warburg and B. pendula Roth, at different light intensities were made using infra-red gas analysis. B. pubescens appears to possess leaves which on the basis of physiological responses can be described as sun and shade leaves. In the more open canopy of B. pendula differences between leaf types are less pronounced. The presence of sun and shade leaves is suggested as a means whereby the net assimilation rate of the shrubby growth form of B. pubescens can be increased. This type of mechanism becomes increasingly important at high altitudes and latitudes.  相似文献

Microbial biofilms have become increasingly problematic in the food processing and medical industries where they cause food and surface contamination. Biofilms have also been implicated as the cause of serious infections in humans as their occurrence makes it difficult to treat common infections and the likelihood of recurrent infections is high. Due to emerging resistance, conventional control methods are fast becoming ineffective. In this study, the use of a selection of commercial plant extracts is investigated. The inhibitory effects of eight herbal extracts on the development of microbial biofilms was investigated against clinical and reference strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans. The antimicrobial activity was investigated on the planktonic forms using the minimum inhibitory concentration assay. The extracts that showed the highest antimicrobial activity against the two test organisms were Echinacea angustifolia (cone flower), Mentha piperita (peppermint) and Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) with minimum inhibitory concentration values between 0.38 and 2.5 mg/ml. The crystal violet assay was used to assess the effect of pre-treating a surface with plant extracts on cell attachment and the extent of biofilm development following exposure to extracts (biofilm biomass). Most of the extracts reduced microbial colonization by at least 50%. In contrast, preformed biofilms were less responsive to the majority of extracts, thus growth inhibition was more difficult to achieve. Mentha piperita was the only extract that showed some antibiofilm activity against both pathogens.  相似文献

The aim of the present study is to assess the antimicrobial activities of various leaf extracts of Ocimum americanum were tested against pathogenic microorganisms. Preparation of different extracts viz., aqueous, acetone, ethyl acetate and methanol through soxhlet extraction method. Various extracts were investigated against MTCC strains of Bacillus cereus, Clostridium penfrigens, Klebsilla pnemoniae, Salmonella paratyphi, Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger by agar well diffusion and disc diffusion methods. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), Minimum Bactericidal/Fungicindal Concentration (MBC/MFC) were determined through micro dilution method. Elucidation of phytochemicals and functional groups were observed by HPLC and FT-IR respectively. Ethyl acetate leaf extract of O.americanum showed significant antimicrobial activity against the all tested pathogens in agar well diffusion method in which B.cereus (17 mm) was observed high zone of inhibition. Whereas lowest inhibition was observed in aqueous extract against C.pentrigens (7 mm). The ranges of MIC values from 0.78 μg/ml to 50 μg/ml and MBC/MFC 1.56 μg/ml to 50 μg/ml were observed. Phytochemicals such as alkaloids, steroids, saponins, flavonoids, tannins, terepenes, phenolic compounds cardiac glycosides were detected. Saponinns, flavonoids, tannins, phenolic compounds were observed in only ethyl acetate leaf extracts. Functional group of the leaf extracts was exhibited by FTIR and HPLC analysis of the ethyl acetate leaf extract was elutated at six peaks. Based on the results we concluded that ethyl acetate leaf extract of O.americanum has proved to be potentially effective than the other extracts. Therefore, ethyl acetate leaf extract of O.americanum could act as antimicrobial agent and further studies are recommended for isolation of compounds and toxicological studies.  相似文献

The aqueous and different solvent extracts viz., petroleum ether, chloroform, methanol and ethanol extracts of leaf and leaf derived callus of Cardiospermum halicacabum L. (Sapindaceae) at different concentrations were screened in vitro for antifungal activity by the poisoned food technique against a wide array of seed-borne phytopathogenic fungi. The test organisms include Aspergillus flavus, A. niger, Curvularia lunata, Drechslera halodes, Fusarium moniliforme, F. solani, and F. oxysporum, which are frequently associated with sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], maize (Zea mays L.) and paddy (Oryza sativa L.) seeds. Aqueous leaf extracts of C. halicacabum showed significant inhibition was observed at 50% concentration particularly in Aspergillus species. With regard to the comparative efficiency of leaf and leaf derived callus extracts, aqueous leaf extract was found to be more effective than callus extract. Among the different solvent extracts, it was observed that at 3000 ppm concentration methanol extract of C. halicacabum leaf recorded the highest degree of activity and percentage inhibition was more, but in petroleum ether and chloroform extracts did not show any significant activity. C. halicacabum leaf derived callus at 3000 ppm methanol extract showed significant antifungal activity on Fusarium species. Leaf of C. halicacabum aqueous and methanol extract showed significant antifungal activity against all the tested fungi. C. halicacabum has significant medicinal value, hence the results of the present investigation indicate that it could be exploited in the management of seed-borne pathogenic fungi.  相似文献

Indian herbal plant species Lantana indica, Adhatoda vasica, Pandanus furcatus, Tylophora indica and Centella asiatica, traditionally used in ethno medicines to treat common infections and various disorders, have been studied for their antimicrobial and antioxidant activity. The methanolic extracts of the plant leaves exhibited significant and dose-dependent antioxidant activities in DPPH radical scavenging, ferric ion reducing and phosphomolybdate assays. These leaf extracts showed antimicrobial activity against selected Gram +ve and Gram ?ve bacterial strains. A. vasica and L. indica extracts possessed maximum antioxidant and antimicrobial activity, respectively. The activities could be correlated to phenolics and flavonoid content of the leaf extracts which ranged from 30.25 to 91.98 mg GAE g?1 dw leaf extract and 2.67 to 96.45 mg RE g?1 dw leaf extract respectively. The aqueous extracts of plant leaves significantly protected the DNA damage against the oxidative damage caused by hydroxyl radicals.  相似文献

The members of the Scabiosa genus are one of the traditional medicinal plants used in the treatment of many diseases, in particular the treatment of scabies. In this study, it was aimed to determine antioxidant activities and chemical composition of methanolic extracts of leaves and flowers of Scabiosa columbaria subsp. columbaria var. columbaria. The phenolic contents of both parts of the plant were analyzed by LC–MS/MS. A total of 6 phenolic compounds were determined and chlorogenic acid was the major compound in both flower and leaf parts of the plants, with 5936.052 µg/g and 8021.666 µg/g, respectively. 6 different methods were used to determine the antioxidant activity of the plant parts. Both leaf and flower parts of the plant showed high antioxidant activity in all tested methods and the antioxidant activity values of the leaf part were measured higher than those of the flower part for four tests. The methanol extracts of the plant parts was analyzed with GC–MS and number of the essential oil compounds in the leaf and flower parts were determined as 17 and 13, respectively. Linalool compound was also found to be common in both parts of the plant. The major compounds of the essential oils were identified as 4-Octadecenal (30.01%) in the flower and carvone (35.44%) in the leaf. In addition, terpene derivatives was determined as 90.32% of the highest essential oil group in the leaf, while this value was determined as 1.42% in the flower. For the flower, aromatics were determined as the main component group with 21.31%.  相似文献

This study aimed to characterize the phenolic and the volatile constituents and to establish the antioxidant potential and the toxicity of a hydroalcoholic extract obtained from the leaves and flower buds of Matthiola incana (L.) R.Br. subsp. incana growing wild in Sicily (Italy). By HPLC‐PDA/ESI‐MS analysis, 12 phenolics (two phenolic acid derivatives and ten flavonoids) were identified, and eight of them were reported for the first time; luteolin‐glucoside was the main component (57.07 mg/g±0.87 % RSD). By SPME‐GC/MS, 47 volatile constituents were fully characterized, and dimethyl trisulfide turned out to be the most abundant one (33.24 %). The extract showed moderate activity both in the DPPH and in the reducing power assays (IC50=2.32±0.24 mg/mL; ASE/mL=12.29±0.42); it did not inhibit the lipid peroxidation, whereas it was found to possess good chelating properties reaching approximately 90 % activity at the highest tested dose. Moreover, the extract protected growth and survival from H2O2‐induced oxidative stress in Escherichia coli. Finally, the extract was non‐toxic against Artemia salina (LC50>1000 μg/mL). These findings increase the knowledge of M. incana subsp. incana and they could be helpful to a chemosystematic distinguishing of this subspecies also demonstrating that the aerial parts represent a safe source of antioxidants.  相似文献

Phenolic compounds and different biological activities of the dry MeOH extracts of the flowers and the herb (aerial parts without flowers) of Laserpitium zernyi Hayek (Apiaceae) were investigated. The total phenolic contents in the extracts were determined spectrophotometrically using Folin–Ciocalteu reagent. In both extracts, apigenin, luteolin, their 7‐O ‐glucosides, and chlorogenic acid were detected by HPLC . Identified phenolics were quantified in both extracts, except luteolin in L . zernyi herb extract. The extracts (p.o .) were tested for anti‐edematous activity in a model of carrageenan (i.pl .) induced rat paw edema. Antioxidant activity of the extracts was assessed by FRAP assay and DPPH and ?OH radicals scavenging tests. Antimicrobial activity was investigated using broth microdilution test against five Gram ‐positive and three Gram ‐negative bacteria, as well as against two strains of Candida albicans . The polyphenol‐richer flower extract exerted higher anti‐edematous and antioxidant activities. The herb extract exhibited better antimicrobial effect against Micrococcus luteus , Enterococcus faecalis , Bacillus subtilis , and Pseudomonas aeruginosa , while against other tested microorganisms, the activity of both extracts was identical. Demonstrated biological activities of L . zernyi flower and herb extracts represent a good basis for their further investigation as potential new herbal medicinal raw materials.  相似文献

The aim of the research is to explore the overall in vitro antioxidant activity, total phenol content, reduction power and antimicrobial activity of the methanol extracts of the lichens Cetraria pinastri, Cladonia digitata, Cladonia fimbriata, Fulgensia fulgens, Ochrolechia parella and Parmelia crinita. The methanol extract of the Cetraria pinastri showed a strong antioxidant activity, whereas the extracts of the species Fulgenesi fulgens, Cladonia fimbriata and Parmelia crinita showed the moderate one and the extract of the species Ochrolechia parella and Cladonia digitata the weak one. The methanol extract of the lichen Cetraria pinastri had the biggest total phenol content (32.9 mg/g of the dry extract). A certain correlation was established between the antioxidant activity and the total phenol content for the researched lichen extracts. The work also explores the antimicrobial activity of the methanol extracts of the mentioned species of lichens against six bacterial and eleven fungi species by the disc-diffusion method and by establishing the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The methanol extracts of the lichens Cetraria pinastri and Parmelia crinita showed the strongest both antibacterial and antifungal activity against most of the tested microorganisms. These researches suggest that the lichens Cetraria prunastri can be used as new sources of the natural antioxidants and the substances with antimicrobial features.  相似文献

Centaurea ragusina L., an endemic Croatian plant species, revealed a good cytotoxic activity of aqueous extracts (AE) on human bladder (T24) and human glioblastoma (A1235) cancer cell lines. The chemical constituents were tentatively identified using high performance liquid chromatography HPLC‐DAD/ESI‐TOF‐MS in negative ionization mode. The main compounds of herba extract were sesquiterpene lactones: solstitialin A 3,13‐diacetate and epoxyrepdiolide; organic acid: quinic acid. The main compounds of flower extract were organic acids: quinic acid, citric acid, and malic acid; sesquiterpene lactone: cynaropicrin; phenolic compounds: chlorogenic acid and phenylpropanoid: syringin. The AE of Cragusina were investigated for correlation of their effects on human bladder (T24) and human glioblastoma (A1235) cancer cell lines using the MTT assay. Although both extracts showed significant dose‐ and time‐dependent cytotoxic activity against both cancer cell lines, the flower extract exhibited slightly higher activity. In order to determine type of cell death induced by treatment, cell lines were exposed subsequently to a treatment with both flower and herba AE. The majority of the cells died by induced apoptosis treatment. Flower AE (26.25%), compared to a leaf AE (22.15%) showed slightly higher percentage of an apoptosis in T24 cells, when compared to a non‐treated cells (0.04%).  相似文献

Aphanamixis polystachya may be a natural, renewable resource against antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections. The antibacterial activity of A. polystachya leaf and bark extracts was investigated against three antibiotic-resistant bacterial species and one fungus. Methanolic leaf extract showed only limited antibacterial activity but both methanolic and aqueous bark extract showed high antimicrobial activity. In an antioxidant activity test, leaf and bark extracts exhibited 50% free radical scavenging at a concentration of 107.14 ± 3.14 μg/mL and 97.13 ± 3.05 μg/mL, respectively, indicating that bark extracts offer more antioxidative activity than leaf extracts. Bark extracts also showed lower toxicity than leaf extracts. This suggests that bark extracts may offer greater development potential than leaf extracts. The molecular dynamics were also investigated through the simulated exploration of multiple potential interactions to understand the interaction dynamics (root-mean-square deviation, solvent-accessible surface area, radius of gyration, and the hydrogen bonding of chosen compounds to protein targets) and possible mechanisms of inhibition. This molecular modeling of compounds derived from A. polystachya revealed that inhibition may occur by binding to the active sites of the target proteins of the tested bacterial strains. A. polystachya bark extract may be used as a natural source of drugs to control antibiotic-resistant bacteria.  相似文献

The current study was designed to evaluate the antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory and antimicrobial activities of Alchemilla mollis (Buser ) Rothm . (Rosaceae) aerial parts extracts. Chemical composition was analyzed by spectrophotometric and chromatographic (HPLC) techniques. The antioxidant properties assessed included DPPH· and ABTS·+ radical scavenging, β‐carotene‐linoleic acid co‐oxidation assay. Antimicrobial activity was evaluated with disc diffusion and micro dilution method. In order to evaluate toxicity of the extracts, with the sulforhodamine B colorimetric assay L929 cell line (mouse fibroblast) was used. The anti‐inflammatory activities of the potent antioxidant extracts (methanol, 70% methanol, and water extracts) were determined by measuring the inhibitory effects on NO production and pro‐inflammatory cytokine TNF‐α levels in lipopolysaccharide stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. 70% methanol and water extracts which were found to be rich in phenolic compounds (184.79 and 172.60 mg GAE/g extract) showed higher antioxidant activity. Luteolin‐7‐O‐glucoside was the main compound in the extracts. Ethyl acetate and 70% methanol extracts showed higher antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella enteritidis with MIC value of 125 μg/ml. 70% methanol extract potentially inhibited the NO and TNF‐α production (18.43 μm and 1556.22 pg/ml, respectively, 6 h).  相似文献

The Polygonum orientale L. extracts were investigated for antibacterial activity against Clavibater michiganense subsp. sepedonicum (Spieckermann & Kotthoff) Davis et al., the causal agent of a serious disease called bacterial ring rot of potato. The results showed that the leaf extracts of P. orientale had significantly (p<0.05) greater antibacterial activity against C. michiganense subsp. sepedonicum than root, stem, flower extracts in vitro. According to the results of single factor experiments and L273(13) orthogonal experiments, optimum extraction conditions were A1B3C1, extraction time 6 h, temperature 80°C, solid to liquid ratio 1∶10 (g:mL). The highest (p<0.05) antibacterial activity was observed when pH was 5, excluding the effect of control. The extracts were stable under ultraviolet (UV). In vivo analysis revealed that 50 mg/mL of P. orientale leaf extracts was effective in controlling decay. Under field conditions, 50 mg/mL of P. orientale leaf extracts also improved growth parameters (whole plant length, shoot length, root length, plant fresh weight, shoot fresh weight, root fresh weight, dry weight, and number of leaves), in the 2010 and 2011 two growing seasons. Further solvent partition assays showed that the most active compounds were in the petroleum ether fractionation. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed drastic ultrastructural changes caused by petroleum ether fractionation, including bacterial deformation, electron-dense particles, formation of vacuoles and lack of cytoplasmic materials. These results indicated that P. orientale extracts have strong antibacterial activity against C. michiganense subsp. sepedonicum and a promising effect in control of bacterial ring rot of potato disease.  相似文献

The organic solvent extract of Kumazasa leaves (Sasa albo-marginata) showed antimicrobial activity against bacteria, fungi and yeast. Kumazasa at a concentration of 0.2-1.0% showed stronger antimicrobial activity than potassium sorbate or sodium benzoate at the same concentration. Both acidic and phenolic fractions of the extract showed strong antimicrobial activity. Thirty acidic and phenolic compounds were identified by GC and GC-MS analysis. Acetic, propionic, benzoic, phenylacetic, salicylic, 3-hydroxybenzoic and o-anisic acids, and guaiacol, phenol, 4-ethylphenol, xylenol and 4-vinylphenol were the main components. It was estimated that these components play an important role in the formation of the antimicrobial activity of Kumazasa extract.  相似文献

Ten-year-old field-grown Quercus pubescens Willd. and Quercus cerris L. individuals were inoculated with Diplodia mutila (teleomorph Botryosphaeria stevensii Shoe-maker) to observe symptom evolution over 2 years. The experiments were carried out for the 3 years: 1991, 1992 and 1993. At the same time, the effect of D. mutila on leaf water potential and peroxidase activity was assessed on the leaves of 2-year-old seedlings from the same two species growing under controlled conditions (18 h day, relative humidity 75%), temperature 24/15°C day/night). Quercus pubescens was more susceptible than Q. cerris, and frequently exhibited dieback of the branch above the inoculation site. On the seedlings, the visible symptoms of infection were much more severe than on the older trees. The infected seedlings showed a lower leaf water potential than healthy seedlings, particularly those of Q. pubescens after the third week. The peroxidase activity was increased in infected Q. pubescens seedlings compared with both groups of control seedlings (wounded but not inoculated, and neither wounded nor inoculated) 14 and 21 days after inoculation. Leaf water potential and peroxidase activity are known indicators of stress which appear even before any visible symptoms; they could therefore serve as early indicators of D. mutila infection.  相似文献

Members of the genus Echinops in the family of Asteraceae are widely used in Ethiopian herbal medicine for the treatment of various diseases and illness such as migraine, diarrhea, heart pain, different forms of infections, intestinal worm infestation and hemorrhoid. Hydroalcoholic extracts of the root, flower head, leaf and stem of Echinops ellenbeckii O. Hoffm. and Echinops longisetus A. Rich were investigated for their chemical constituents and biological activities. The presence of alkaloids, saponins, phytosterols, polyphenols and carotenoids in the different parts of the plants was observed whilst anthraquinones were not detected. The leaf extracts of both plants and stem extract of E. longisetus showed strong inhibitory activity against cultures of Staphylococcus aureus. None of the extracts were found to be active against Gram-positive organisms. The flower extract of E. ellenbeckii showed strong inhibitory activity against Candida albicans. Root and flower extracts of the plants investigated showed lethal activity against earthworms. Moreover, the extracts of the roots of both plants showed molluscicidal activity against schistosome-transmitting snail hosts. The biological activities observed were dose dependent.  相似文献
