Twenty-two zoosporic fungi were recovered from soil samples collected in Tunisia and in the Seychelles Islands in the Indian Ocean. One, Phlyctochytrium chandlerii is described as new. Most of the others are referred, sometimes tentatively, to existing species or genera.  相似文献

A new lacazelline brachiopod species is described from reef caves in the outer reef slope zone off Addu and South Male atolls in the Maldive Islands, Indian Ocean. Based on anatomical features of the soft parts, shell morphology and shell microstructure the new taxon is assigned to the genus Ospreyella Lüter and Wörheide 2003 in the subfamily Lacazellinae of the family Thecideidae. This new species, here named O. maldiviana and representing the first occurrence of the genus in the Indian Ocean, is compared with the type species O. depressa Luter from Osprey Reef, Coral Sea, Australia. Comparisons are made between Ospreyella (now two species) and the other extant lacazelline genera Lacazella Munier‐Chalmas (three species) and Pajaudina Logan (one species).  相似文献

The Giant African Land Snail, Achatina ( = Lissachatina) fulica Bowdich, 1822, is a tropical crop pest species with a widespread distribution across East Africa, the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, the Pacific, the Caribbean, and North and South America. Its current distribution is attributed primarily to the introduction of the snail to new areas by Man within the last 200 years. This study determined the extent of genetic diversity in global A. fulica populations using the mitochondrial 16S ribosomal RNA gene. A total of 560 individuals were evaluated from 39 global populations obtained from 26 territories. Results reveal 18 distinct A. fulica haplotypes; 14 are found in East Africa and the Indian Ocean islands, but only two haplotypes from the Indian Ocean islands emerged from this region, the C haplotype, now distributed across the tropics, and the D haplotype in Ecuador and Bolivia. Haplotype E from the Philippines, F from New Caledonia and Barbados, O from India and Q from Ecuador are variants of the emergent C haplotype. For the non-native populations, the lack of genetic variation points to founder effects due to the lack of multiple introductions from the native range. Our current data could only point with certainty to the Indian Ocean islands as the earliest known common source of A. fulica across the globe, which necessitates further sampling in East Africa to determine the source populations of the emergent haplotypes.  相似文献

Using histological and cytological criteria, it has been shown that in the ovotestis of Serranus hepatus , a synchronous hermaphrodite, the differentiation of the ovary is earlier than that of the testis. Primordial germ cells (PGC) exhibit the same ultrastructural features in the ovary and the testis. These cells migrate from the ovary to colonize the testicular anlage.  相似文献

The larval food plants of the butterflies of the Andaman and Nicobar islands have not been studied, although the butterfly fauna per se is fairly well known. For the first time we report the food plants of the larvae of 120 species of butterflies from these islands on the basis of laboratory rearing and field studies. This information is essential for the formulation of management programmes for butterfly conservation on these islands which are known to harbour critical swallowtail and (possibly) danaine faunas.  相似文献

At the Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the north‐eastern Indian Ocean >592 fishes from at least 11 species died in a series of events in December 2007, January and February 2008 and April 2009. The dead fishes were from a wide range of taxonomic families, indicating that conditions exceeded the tolerances of a broad array of species. The 2007–2008 die‐off events occurred on the warmest and calmest days of a significantly warmer and calmer summer. Fishes died in the southern inshore areas of the coral atoll lagoon at survey sites where seawater temperature was highest (33–35° C) and dissolved oxygen was lowest (1·4–1·8 mg l?1). The water temperature at these fish‐kill survey sites (33–35° C) was significantly warmer than previous years (1997 to 2005, mean ±s.e. = 28·7 ± 0·1° C). Fishes probably died because they were unable to obtain the additional oxygen required for metabolism at higher temperatures. Repeated die‐off events over the last 130 years indicate that some fishes have not yet adapted to rises in seawater temperature. This study provides empirical evidence to support suggestions that differences in physiological tolerances to increasing sea temperatures may be important in determining the structure of future coral‐reef fish communities with respect to climate change.  相似文献

Four monoxenous nematodes and 1 heteroxenous cestode were found in 4 species of introduced small mammals on isolated sub-Antarctic islands of the Indian Ocean. In the Kerguelen Archipelago, Syphacia obvelata, Passalurus ambiguus (Nematoda: Oxyuridae), and Rodentolepis straminea (Cestoda: Cyclophyllidae) were respectively found in the house mouse Mus musculus, the rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus, and the black rat Rattus rattus. One accidental nematode, Trichostrongylus sp. (Nematoda: Trichostrongylidae), was also found in a black rat on Kerguelen. On Possession Island (Crozet Archipelago), R. straminea was present in the black rat. On Amsterdam Island, the brown rat R. norvegicus harbored 2 species, R. straminea and Nippostrongylus brasiliensis (Nematoda: Heligmonellidae). The small number of founder hosts and the depauperate terrestrial communities on these remote islands explain the low diversity in the helminth communities of these introduced mammals compared with continental populations.  相似文献

Seabird populations of the Southern Ocean have been responding to climate change for the last three decades and demographic models suggest that projected warming will cause dramatic population changes over the next century. Shift in species distribution is likely to be one of the major possible adaptations to changing environmental conditions. Habitat models based on a unique long-term tracking dataset of king penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) breeding on the Crozet Islands (southern Indian Ocean) revealed that despite a significant influence of primary productivity and mesoscale activity, sea surface temperature consistently drove penguins' foraging distribution. According to climate models of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the projected warming of surface waters would lead to a gradual southward shift of the more profitable foraging zones, ranging from 25 km per decade for the B1 IPCC scenario to 40 km per decade for the A1B and A2 scenarios. As a consequence, distances travelled by incubating and brooding birds to reach optimal foraging zones associated with the polar front would double by 2100. Such a shift is far beyond the usual foraging range of king penguins breeding and would negatively affect the Crozet population on the long term, unless penguins develop alternative foraging strategies.  相似文献

Dietary studies performed on three planktivorous penguins, Eudypteschrysolophus, E.chrysocome and Pygoscelis papua, provided alarge collection of well-preserved Euphausia vallentiru at differentperiods of the year. The change of carapace-length distributions,gut fullness and sexual maturity stages of E.vallentini aredescnbed. and a scheme for the life history of this speciesis proposed from this set of data. Its main characteristicsare as follows: mating peak in October-November; recruitmentof post-larval individuals from December-January onwards; fastgrowth until May; zero winter growth between June and mid-Augustdue to a minimum feeding activity Feeding activity reaches itshighest level from August to early October and is coincidentwith maturation, growth recovery, enhancement of sexual dimorphismand beginning of breeding season. Assuming that juveniles are1 year old when they begin to be recruited in penguin stomachs,E.vallentini is supposed to have a 2-year-life span in Crozetwaters. Two-year-old individuals are supposed to die in summeror autumn Juveniles can reach sexual maturity as early as November-Decemberwhen they are 1 year old and 16 mm body length: however, theyare unlikely to mate in significant numbers at this age. Inspite of specific limitations, the present sampling method iswell suited to routine surveys of local euphausiid populations.  相似文献

Lentic habitats (standing water, such as ponds and lakes) differ from lotic habitats (running water; streams and rivers) in their spatiotemporal persistence, with lentic habitats being more ephemeral in evolutionary time. This habitat instability is thought to select for dispersal, and several phylogenetic and macroecological studies have suggested that high rates of dispersal are more characteristic of lentic than lotic species. We tested this hypothesis using a comparative population genetic and phylogeographic approach based on mitochondrial DNA for 59 aquatic beetle species, sampled across Madagascar. Species were classified as lotic (n = 25), lentic (n = 25), or lotolentic (associated with both running and standing water; n = 9). Hierarchical population genetic structure (AMOVA), nucleotide diversity (π), and geographic structure were compared among habitat types. Lotic species had significantly greater population structure (ФST = 0.55, hierarchical AMOVA) than lentic (ФST = 0.13) and lotolentic (ФST = 0.19) species using phylogenetic generalized least squares (PGLS) to correct for phylogeny. Body size was independent of habitat preference, and did not explain any of the intraspecific variation. A greater proportion of lotic species were endemic to Madagascar and lotic species had more pronounced geographic structure in their haplotype networks. The results indicate that dispersal is consistently lower among lotic species, independent of phylogenetic relatedness. This has macroevolutionary and biogeographical consequences for the freshwater fauna of this tropical biodiversity hotspot where remaining natural habitats are becoming increasingly isolated from one another.  相似文献

Summary Recent cruises on board research vessels and trawlers have followed the adult fishes of the Notothenia rossii rossii Richardson, 1844 population from the Kerguelen Islands. The food of this Nototheniidae being mainly planktonic, the movements of shoals are connected with the high productivity areas. In the Southern Ocean these areas are localized around the Antarctic Convergence. At the Kerguelen Islands the irregular configuration of the shelf and seasonal variations in water masses change the positions of the productive areas. For this reason the adult population can be to the north or south off the archipelago. Spawning only gathers the mature fishes in the southeast of Kerguelen during winter. At that time this species is very vulnerable to fishing efforts. The population dynamics of this Antarctic fish is studied with fishery statistics and biological data. A decline of the average length and catches per unit effort are observed from one year to the next.
Resumé De récentes missions à bord de navires de recherche et de chalutiers ont permis de suivre la population adulte de Notothenia rossii rossii Richardson, 1844 des îles Kerguelen. Le régime alimentaire de ce Nototheniidae étant principalement de nature planctonique, les mouvements des bancs de poissons sont liés aux zones de haute productivité. Dans l'océan austral ces zones sont localisées au niveau de la convergence antarctique. Aux îles Kerguelen la topographie du plateau continental et les variations saisonnières de l'hydrologie modifient continuellement la position des zones de productivité. Pour cette raison la population adulte peut se trouver soit au nord soit au sud de l'archipel. Seule la ponte réunit les poissons matures dans le sud-est des îles Kerguelen pendant l'hiver. A cette période l'espèce est très vulnérable à un effort de pêche. La dynamique de la population de ce poisson antarctique est étudiée à partir des statistiques de pêche et des données biologiques. Une baisse de la longueur moyenne de la population ainsi qu'une diminution des valeurs de la prise par unité d'effort sont observées pendant la période considérée.

A survey of the pteridophytes of Mauritius is presented, including a summary of their habitats, ecology, and phytogeographical affinities. Of the 186 infrageneric taxa recorded from the island, 8 are adventive or naturalized, and 27 are presumed rare or extinct. Major ecological groupings are presented and species are listed for both indigenous and secondary plant communities.  相似文献

The microphytobenthic standing crop in marine coastal sediments from Kerguelen main island (from surface to 8 cm deep) varied in relation to the tidal position, grain size, and shelter of sediments. A time-series analysis was performed at three distinct sites: a sheltered fjord (PRAY), a moderately exposed embayment (PAF) and a deep fjord with higher open-ocean influence (PN). Temporal variations on all studied parameters were observed on intertidal, as well as on subtidal sediments, but with a great range in variations and pattern. Compared to phytoplankton blooms at the same location and stations, the microphytobenthos productive periods were not so marked, especially on intertidal sediments. Nevertheless, high productivity periods were in most cases linked to austral spring and summer (up to 30–50 g Chl a g–1 dw, in intertidal sheltered sands; >170 g Chl a g–1 dw, in sheltered subtidal muds). On subtidal muddy sites, the high phaeopigments concentrations (up to 195 g Phaeo a g–1 dw at PRAY site) were attributed to kelp and epiphyte degradation and sedimentation, and also to macrofauna trophic influence, whereas at Portes-Noires fjord (PN) a Phaeophytine a late spring increase in 1991 was suspected to be of plankton origin. The PN site exhibited a lower productivity than at the other two sites, regardless of the tidal position of the sediment, due to a delayed annual cycle in surficial temperature and standing crop. Compared to the phytoplankton blooms, the microphytobenthos productivity at Kerguelen main island was less restricted in time and may occur throughout the year, not just to the benefit of the benthos food-chain, but also to the pelagic one via resuspension, as well as to filter feeders (i.e. mussels).  相似文献

Premise of the study: The American bulb-bearing Oxalis (Oxalidaceae) have diverse heterostylous breeding systems and are distributed in mountainous areas from Patagonia to the northeastern United States. To study the evolutionary processes leading to this diversity, we constructed the first molecular phylogeny for the American bulb-bearing Oxalis and used it to infer biogeographic history and breeding system evolution. ? Methods: We used DNA sequence data (nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer, trnL-trnL-trnF, trnT-trnL, and psbJ-petA) to infer phylogenetic history via parsimony, likelihood, and Bayesian analyses. We used Bayes Multistate to infer ancestral geographic distributions at well-supported nodes of the phylogeny. The Shimodaira-Hasegawa (SH) test distinguished among hypotheses of single or multiple transitions from South America to North America, and tristyly to distyly. ? Key results: The American bulb-bearing Oxalis include sampled members of sections Ionoxalis and Pseudobulbosae and are derived from a larger clade that includes members of sections Palmatifoliae, Articulatae, and the African species. The American bulb-bearing Oxalis comprise two clades: one distributed in SE South America and the other in the Andes and North America. An SH test supports multiple dispersals to North America. Most sampled distylous species form a single clade, but at least two other independent distylous lineages are supported by the topologies and SH tests. ? Conclusions: Phylogenetic results suggest the American bulb-bearing Oxalis originated in southern South America, dispersed repeatedly to North America, and had multiple transitions from tristyly to distyly. This study adds to our understanding of biogeographic history and breeding system evolution and provides a foundation for more precise inferences about the study group.  相似文献

Elaphoglossum section Lepidoglossa in Africa, Macaronesia (Azores and Madeira), the mid‐Atlantic Ocean Islands (St Helena, Gough and Tristan da Cunha Island groups) and the southern Indian Ocean Islands (Marion and Prince Edward Islands) is reviewed. Fifteen Elaphoglossum species from this region are ascribed to the section. The essential oil obtained from hydrodistillation of flowering aerial parts of Athanasia brownii (Asteraceae) was studied for its chemical composition by GC/FID and GC/MS, and for biological activity, namely, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and chemopreventive potential, by DPPH (=2,2‐diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl), ABTS (=2,2′‐azinobis[3‐ethylbenzothioline‐6‐sulfonic acid), and FRAP (=ferric reducing antioxidant power), disk diffusion test, and MTT (=3‐(4,5‐dimethylthiazol‐2‐yl)‐2,5‐diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay, respectively. The oil was characterized by a high content of oxygenated sesquiterpenes (71.2%), with selin‐11‐en‐4α‐ol (24.6%), caryophyllene oxide (8.7%), humulene epoxide II (5.1%), and (E)‐nerolidol (4.9%) as the predominant compounds. The oil showed a moderate activity against streptococci as well as radical‐scavenging potential, while the inhibitory effects against human cancer cells examined such as A375 (malignant melanoma) and HCT 116 (colon carcinoma) were significant, with IC50 values of 19.85 and 29.53 μg/ml, respectively.  相似文献
