Synopsis The early development of rainbow darter, Etheostoma caeruleum, was examined from an ecological perspective. Steps and thresholds of ontogeny to completion of body squammation are defined, and related to environmental factors. Rainbow darter eggs are about 2 mm diameter, considerably larger than those of related logperch (Percina caprodes). The embryonic vitelline respiratory plexus is much more extensive. The pelagic interval characteristic of logperch and ancestral percids is eliminated and onset of exogenous feeding is delayed. The larger larvae of the rainbow darter can begin feeding directly on aquatic insects, and complete their life cycle in streams. Therefore, shifts in the timing of important thresholds (e.g. exogenous feeding) are ecologically important. Furthermore, early maturation and/or delayed bone and scale formation may be responsible for reductions in the lateralis system and scalation in this and other darter species.  相似文献

Synopsis The channel darter, Percina copelandi, is a small benthic fish with a wide but disjunct distribution across central North America. The development of conservation and recovery strategies for Canadian populations is limited by a lack of knowledge regarding ecology, population size and other factors that affect its distribution and abundance. We sampled five rivers in the Lake Ontario basin to test whether the distribution of P. copelandi reflected riffle habitat characteristics or landscape-scale factors such as surficial geology and natural barriers (waterfalls). At most sites yielding P. copelandi, riffles flowed into deep sand bottomed run or pool habitats. Despite a lack of association with local surficial geology or riffle habitat characteristics, both the upstream limits of P. copelandi occurrence and distribution of suitable habitats reflected the distribution of waterfalls, chutes and bedrock outcroppings. In contrast to P. copelandi, distributions of Etheostoma flabellare, P. caprodes and Rhinichthys cataractae reflected among site differences in riffle habitat.  相似文献

The macrogeographic dispersal of unionoid mussels is largely dependent on movement by their host fish. The snuffbox mussel Epioblasma triquetra (Unionoida) and other congeners use a novel trapping behaviour to parasitize potential host fish with their larvae (glochidia). Common logperch (Percina caprodes) trapped by E. triquetra survive the trapping behaviour, whereas other darter species (Etheostoma and Percina) do not, thus, making the P. caprodesE. triquetra relationship a good candidate system for a coevolutionary study. We hypothesized that the geographic genetic structure of E. triquetra should closely match that of its host, albeit with greater interpopulation divergences as a result of its dependency on the host for dispersal. Mantel tests of parallel pairwise matrices of population divergence (Jost's D) and genetic assignment tests based on microsatellite DNA data showed that the genetic population structures of both species were broadly, but not perfectly, congruent. Therefore, it appears that P. caprodes are not solely responsible for the genetic population structure observed for snuffbox and may not necessarily be the mussel's only host across its entire range. This suggests the potential for a geographic mosaic for coevolution in unionoids and darters. The a priori null hypotheses that responses to donor, orangethroat darter Etheostoma spectabile , johnny darter Etheostoma nigrum , logperch Percina caprodes , slenderhead darter Percina phoxocephala and blackside darter Percina maculata , extracts would be absent in the three test species, orangethroat darter, johnny darter and logperch, was rejected. This was because orangethroat and johnny darter responded with decreased activity to skin extracts derived from conspecifics and from other members of the assemblage. In contrast, logperch were notable by their lack of a detectable response to any species. Similarities and differences in habitat utilization are seen as a possible basis for these responses.  相似文献

Synopsis The ecological classification of fishes into reproductive guilds is based on the premises that (1) reproductive styles and early ontogeny are closely related, and (2) both are correlated with the ecology of a species. A comparison of early ontogenies of logperch (Percina caprodes), rainbow darter (Etheostoma caeruleum), and fantail darter (E. flabellare) confirmed these premises, and provided possible explanations for diversity within the Etheostomatini. Young logperch have limited vitelline circulation, hatch while still poorly developed, and therefore must drift from oxygen rich lotic habitats to lentic habitats where small planktonic prey are available. Young rainbow and fantail darters have extensive vitelline plexuses, are well developed at transition to first feeding, and begin feeding on aquatic insects. Thus there is no necessity for a drift interval. As a result, the latter species are adapted for stream life. Interspecific differences in reproductive styles and early ontogenies may have contributed to speciation of darters by allowing partitioning of breeding sites and food resources for young. In addition, reduced drift dispersal and small stream habitation may have indirectly contributed to speciation by reducing genetic exchange among populations.  相似文献

Synopsis The densities, habitat use, and feeding behaviors of 13 fish species belonging to the benthic invertebrate-feeding guild were studied by snorkeling at three localities in the Little River of eastern Tennessee, U.S.A. Resource partitioning occurred by habitat, feeding behavior and time of activity. Differences were also found at the generic level.Cottus was a nocturnal feeder, whereasPercina andEtheostoma were, for the most part, diurnally active.Percina moved about rapidly and spent most of its time above the bottom. In contrast,Etheostoma varied considerably in the amount of time spent under cover, spent little time above the bottom, and exhibited low levels of swimming activity. Nearly all species sought cover at night, suggesting they may be particularly sensitive to predation at night. Species with small adult sizes (Etheostoma, Cottus andP. evides) were concentrated in shallow water habitats, whereas species with large adult sizes (Percina) were more abundant in deep water habitats. The habitat use data are consistent with the hypothesis that size-selective predation by centrarchid bass may cause smaller fish to avoid deep water areas. Large species should have a lower risk of predation due to their size and behavior.  相似文献

Microhabitat use and habitat partitioning for 10 darter species (Percidae: Etheostomatini) were studied by direct observation (snorkeling) at five sites in the Elk River drainage, West Virginia, U.S.A. We used canonical discriminant analysis and univariate tests to determine microhabitat variables that were important in segregating species. Darter species were segregated by depth, substrate size, and water velocity. In addition, Percina typically occurred in the water column, whereas species of Etheostoma were benthic and segregated by occurring under, between, and on top of rocks.  相似文献

Phylogeography seeks to evaluate the relationship between genetic variation and geographic distribution of a species to examine the influence of historical events on divergence. Congruent phylogeographic patterns in codistributed species indicate historical association of the taxa being compared, and the uniform action of biogeographic events in shaping genetic variation. We sought to evaluate the congruence of patterns of genetic variation of five closely related fish species across a well-defined biogeographic boundary. We gathered allozymic and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence data for five species of darters (Percidae: Etheostomatini) from populations distributed among biogeographic regions in the Ozark and Ouachita highlands of the south-central United States. Comparisons among species revealed noncongruence in the magnitude of genetic divergence in both allozymes and mtDNA sequences. We hypothesized that noncongruence resulted, in part, from differences in life histories of the species in our comparison. To address this hypothesis, we evaluated the association between gene flow (measured by Nem) and variation in body size and fecundity variables because they have been shown to influence gene flow in fishes. Correlation analysis revealed an association between gene flow and fecundity (r = 0.88), but not with body size (r = 0.36) or reproductive investment per individual (r = –0.23). The result was similar when independent contrasts of the original variables were used in correlation analyses. Phylogeographic analysis of mtDNA sequence data indicated the importance of history, evident in gene trees of Percina nasuta and Percina phoxocephala. Divergence rates between these two taxa may differ because of historically persistent differences in population sizes, reflected in present-day abundance and fecundity differences. Conversely, Percina caprodes showed little evidence of divergence in mtDNA sequences and yielded the highest mean Nem values from allozyme data. Comparisons among closely related, codistributed taxa may help discriminate among the possibilities for noncongruence in biogeographic studies by allowing evaluation of the influence of life history on patterns of gene flow.  相似文献

The endangered vermilion darter (Etheostoma chermocki) is endemic to the Black Warrior River system in the Mobile Basin in Alabama. Restoration and conservation of this species require an understanding of its population genetic structure, which can be characterized using microsatellite DNA. Nine microsatellite loci were developed; eight loci were polymorphic. Although observed heterozygosity was lower than expected heterozygosity in most polymorphic loci, only one locus showed significant deviation from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. These nine markers were tested in an additional 24 species of Etheostoma and appear to have sufficient allelic variation to be useful in studies of population genetic structure.  相似文献

We combine evidence from small-scale experiments with a large-scale field survey to clarify the roles of biotic resistance and pre-adapted habitat niche segregation to the invasion success of the North American brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) in North European streams previously dominated by brown trout (Salmo trutta). Interspecific aggressions among the two species were negligible, yet there was distinct habitat niche segregation between them: brook trout occupied mainly pool habitats while brown trout tended to reside in fast-flowing riffles. Habitat niche segregation among brook trout and brown trout prevailed across a wide array of scales from experimental flumes to entire drainage systems, although the segregation pattern was weaker in the field. Habitat differentiation among the two species reflected their differential habitat requirements, suggesting that a match between a species’ niche requirements in its native range and habitat availability in the new environment is a prerequisite for understanding invasion success.  相似文献

Relationships between environmental variability and movement are poorly understood, due to both their complexity and the limited ecological scope of most movement studies. We studied movements of fantail (Etheostoma flabellare), riverweed (E. podostemone), and Roanoke darters (Percina roanoka) through two stream systems during two summers. We then related movement to variability in measured habitat attributes using logistic regression and exploratory data plots. We indexed habitat conditions at both microhabitat (i.e., patches of uniform depth, velocity, and substrate) and mesohabitat (i.e., riffle and pool channel units) spatial scales, and determined how local habitat conditions were affected by landscape spatial (i.e., longitudinal position, land use) and temporal contexts. Most spatial variability in habitat conditions and fish movement was unexplained by a site’s location on the landscape. Exceptions were microhabitat diversity, which was greater in the less-disturbed watershed, and riffle isolation and predator density in pools, which were greater at more-downstream sites. Habitat conditions and movement also exhibited only minor temporal variability, but the relative influences of habitat attributes on movement were quite variable over time. During the first year, movements of fantail and riverweed darters were triggered predominantly by loss of shallow microhabitats; whereas, during the second year, microhabitat diversity was more strongly related (though in opposite directions) to movement of these two species. Roanoke darters did not move in response to microhabitat-scale variables, presumably because of the species’ preference for deeper microhabitats that changed little over time. Conversely, movement of all species appeared to be constrained by riffle isolation and predator density in pools, two mesohabitat-scale attributes. Relationships between environmental variability and movement depended on both the spatiotemporal scale of consideration and the ecology of the species. Future studies that integrate across scales, taxa, and life-histories are likely to provide greater insight into movement ecology than will traditional, single-season, single-species approaches. Habitat segregation has been recognized as an important means of resource partitioning in river fish assemblages. Association between river fishes and habitat features were identified through principal component analysis (PCA). Fish and habitat data were collected in the Kaoping, Tsengwen, Choshui, and Tatu rivers from July 1997 to June 1999 in western Taiwan. Electrofishing was used to collect fishes in grids, and environment variables in the sampled areas were measured immediately after sampling. The first four PCs of depth, velocity, cover, substrate and water temperature variables explained 92.3% of the total variance in habitat characteristics. Varicorhinus barbatulus, Acrossocheilus formosanus and Tilapia mossambica in the upper right quadrant, indicated preference for deep‐water habitat. Species usually associated with shallow water habitat include several minnow species. Rhinogobius brunneus, Hemimyzon formosanum, Sinogastromyzon puliensis and Crossostoma lacustre distribution is centred in the upper and lower left, indicating preference for shallow water. Principal component (PC) scores on Zacco pachycephalus, Abbottina brevirostris and Hemiculter leucisculus appeared to have no special preference. Differences in habitat use exhibited by these species may be related to success in finding food and avoiding predators.  相似文献

Habitat restoration strategies for fragmented high Andean forest landscapes must consider the influence of within‐patch habitat quality on bird abundance. I examined vegetation and bird abundance at three locations within a highly fragmented Polylepis forest landscape in the Cordillera Vilcanota, southern Peru. Across the landscape, there was significant variation in the vegetation structure of Polylepis forest patches of different size categories, especially in terms of tree girth, tree height, tree density, and canopy vegetation structure. Principal Component Analysis extracted five factors of habitat quality, which together accounted for 74.2% of the variability within 15 habitat variables. Polylepis bird species differed in their responses to habitat quality but, overall, variation in Polylepis bird abundance was not fully captured by the range of habitat quality variables. Tall, dense vegetation cover was clearly important for 11 conservation‐important species, a high density of large trees was important for 10 species and primary forest ground cover was important for eight species. Habitat quality exhibited no significant influence on the abundance of only one species –Asthenes urubambensis. The abundance of seven species was associated with lower elevation forest, but only one species was associated with higher elevation forest. Management of habitat quality in large and medium remnant forest patches throughout the Cordillera Vilcanota, particularly in the 3800–4200 m elevation range, will be a cornerstone in ensuring the persistence of the majority of conservation‐important bird species populations.  相似文献

  1. Mechanisms driving patterns of occurrence and co-occurrence among North American freshwater fishes are poorly understood. In particular, the influence of biotic interactions on coexistence among stream reaches and their effects on regional species distribution patterns is not well understood for congeneric headwater fishes.
  2. Occupancy models provide a useful framework for examining patterns of co-occurrence while also accounting for imperfect detection. Occupancy models may be extended to test for evidence that a dominant species influences the occurrence of a subordinate species and thus evaluate support for the hypothesis that species interactions drive patterns of coexistence.
  3. We examined patterns of occurrence and co-occurrence at the stream-reach scale among three species of darters (Percidae: Etheostomatinae) that occupy headwater streams within a Gulf Coastal Plain drainage in the south-eastern U.S.A. We assessed species occurrences at 97 sites in first- to third-order streams on one occasion each and used data from four sub-reaches sampled with equal effort at each site to estimate species-specific detection probabilities. Following sampling, a suite of habitat variables was collected at three equidistant points along each of the three transects established within a sub-reach. Coarse (stream-segment, catchment, network) scale variables were also incorporated using geospatial data. Single-species and two-species occupancy models were used to examine patterns of occupancy and coexistence.
  4. The occupancy of each species was influenced by distinct habitat variables. Goldstripe darters (Etheostoma parvipinne) were constrained by a stream size gradient, groundwater input appeared to influence the occurrence of Yazoo darters (Etheostoma raneyi), and local habitat heterogeneity (e.g. variation in depth and current velocity) appeared to influence the occupancy of redspot darters (Etheostoma artesiae).
  5. We found no evidence that the presence of one species influenced the occurrence of another within a stream-reach based on two-species occupancy models. Rather, species co-occurrences were best explained as independent occurrences within a stream-reach according to species-specific habitat associations.
  6. Occupancy modelling may provide a suitable framework for evaluating the influence of biotic interactions among congeneric stream fishes along species-specific habitat gradients at the stream reach scale. Our study offers insight into how habitat variation can influence coexistence of potential competitors across a large river system.

Habitat specialization has been considered as a primary factor in determining the distribution of species. In this study, we investigated species–habitat associations while controlling for spatial neighbourhood effects in a large-scale (20 ha) stem-mapping plot in a species-rich subtropical forest of China. Habitat specialization was measured by topographic variation and its effects on species distributions were modelled at three different spatial scales (10×10, 20×20 and 25×25 m2) using log-linear regression models and randomization tests. Our results showed: (1) 83% of the species were related to at least one or more topographic variables. Among them, 66%, 60%, 65% and 70% were closely dependent on slope, aspect, elevation and convexity, respectively. (2) Topographic variables have much stronger non-linear (quadratic and cubic) effects on species distributions than linear effects. (3) The effects of topographic heterogeneity on the distribution of shrubs species are smaller than on the distribution of canopy species, and smaller effects were also found in less abundant species. (4) There was a strong neighbourhood effect on species distribution: In 85% of the species, abundance in a focal quadrat was significantly correlated with abundance in the neighbour quadrats. We conclude that habitat specialization plays an important role in maintaining the diversity of this species-rich subtropical forest.  相似文献

Many species of planktonic cladocerans display substantial variation in habitat use (mean depth and diel vertical migration), both among and within populations. We examined whether clonal segregation and specialization contributes to such behavioral variation within several lake populations of the cladoceran, Daphnia pulicaria. Electrophoretic and quantitative genetic analysis of clonal lines isolated from different depths at night revealed that clonal habitat specialization was common. Clones that utilized shallow water at night were genetically smaller at maturity and lower fecundity under standard laboratory conditions than the deep-water clones. The magnitude of this clonal habitat specialization varied among lakes: populations displaying broad use of depth habitats contained greater genetic variance than populations with more constrained habitat use. These results are consistent with known differences in selective factors in different depth habitats and suggest that substantial clonal specialization can occur within single populations. Since previous work has discovered a heritable basis to habitat selection in several Daphnia species, including D. pulicaria in our study lakes, it is likely that clonal/depth specialization is an important factor affecting the trophic ecology of Daphnia. This study examines early embryogenesis in two species of darters, Etheostoma caeruleum and E. zonale (Teleostei: Percidae), and their hybrids. Results document the course of ontogeny from fertilization until the onset of pigmented eyes. Comparing fertilization and developmental success of conspecific versus heterospecific crosses revealed an asymmetric postmating reproductive barrier. E. caeruleum eggs treated with E. zonale sperm exhibited fertilization and developmental success similar to that of conspecific crosses. In contrast, E. zonale eggs treated with E. caeruleum sperm exhibited reduced fertilization relative to conspecific crosses and abnormal development. Development in this latter cross was compromised at all stages, but appeared to be concentrated around epiboly, or cell migration. As epiboly represents the stage of ontogeny when zygotic genes of both species jointly contribute to embryogenesis, results provide insight into the genetic mechanisms underlying postmating barriers in Etheostoma. Finally, the observed asymmetry in fertilization success is consistent with predictions based on the behavioral ecology of these species. Etheostoma zonale spawn in the open water column, whereas E.␣caeruleum bury their eggs under the substrate. The observed fertilization barrier may have therefore resulted from selection favoring increased fertilization specificity in E. zonale.  相似文献

The introduction of zebra mussels (Dreissena spp.) to North America has resulted in dramatic changes to the complexity of benthic habitats. Changes in habitat complexity may have profound effects on predator-prey interactions in aquatic communities. Increased habitat complexity may affect prey and predator dynamics by reducing encounter rates and foraging success. Zebra mussels form thick contiguous colonies on both hard and soft substrates. While the colonization of substrata by zebra mussels has generally resulted in an increase in both the abundance and diversity of benthic invertebrate communities, it is not well known how these changes affect the foraging efficiencies of predators that prey on benthic invertebrates. We examined the effect of zebra mussels on the foraging success of four benthic predators with diverse prey-detection modalities that commonly forage in soft substrates: slimy sculpin (Cottus cognatus), brown bullhead (Ameirus nebulosus), log perch (Percina caprodes), and crayfish (Orconectes propinquus). We conducted laboratory experiments to assess the impact of zebra mussels on the foraging success of predators using a variety of prey species. We also examined habitat use by each predator over different time periods. Zebra mussel colonization of soft sediments significantly reduced the foraging efficiencies of all predators. However, the effect was dependent upon prey type. All four predators spent more time in zebra mussel habitat than in either gravel or bare sand. The overall effect of zebra mussels on benthic-feeding fishes is likely to involve a trade-off between the advantages of increased density of some prey types balanced against the reduction in foraging success resulting from potential refugia offered in the complex habitat created by zebra mussels.  相似文献

The distribution of the swim bladder was examined in 20 species representing all four genera (Percina, Etheostoma, Crystallaria, and Ammocrypta) of darters (Etheostomatini). Including data on species examined in other studies, swim bladders have been found in 15 of 17 species of Percina, but were absent in Crystallaria asprella, Ammocrypta pellucida, and the 18 species of Etheostoma examined. Relative swim bladder length in Percina was shown to be positively correlated with body size. Although not statistically significant, swim bladder size also correlates with habitat (riffle, run, or pool) and swimming behavior (midwater or benthic).  相似文献
