The extent of chromosome structural differences such as permanent translocations and paracentric inversions has been studied in the hybrid complex of Phlomis composita and its putative parental taxa P. lychnitis and P. crinita . They are detected as meiotic abnormalities during microsporogenesis. In total, 117 plants from 19 populations in Andalusia (southern Spain) and Levante (eastern Spain) were studied for ploidy level, chromosome clumping, multivalent or univalent formation, late bivalent disjunction with bridges, chromatin bridges and fragments, irregular polysporads and variable pollen size. All individuals had the diploid chromosome number 2 n  = 20, with no significant difference in the frequencies of the above meiotic abnormalities either at taxon or population levels. However, very different frequencies were observed on the regional scale between populations in Andalusia and Levante. The systematics of the genus Crataegus (Rosaceae) have been considered problematic owing to the fact that hybridization, introgression, polyploidy and apomixis may occur in this genus. A study of the Crataegus species from the Arab mountains, Sweida Province, Syria, has been undertaken based on both plastid DNA sequences ( trn L- trn F, psb A- trn H) and morphological data. In the investigated region, three morphologically distinguishable Crataegus species: C. azarolus var. aronia L., C.  ×  sinaica Boiss. ssp. sinaica and C. monogyna var. monogyna Jacq. were investigated. Crataegus azarolus can be clearly distinguished morphologically from C. monogyna by the colour, size and structure of fruits, the number of pyrenes, the flowering and ripening time, the density of thorns, the tree shape and also the leaf shape. According to our morphological data, in Syria, C.  ×  sinaica is variable and could represent a hybrid of C. azarolus  ×  C. monogyna ; the cpDNA sequence analysis showed sequences corresponding to C. monogyna as the plausible mother of the hybrid.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 153 , 255–263.  相似文献

On the basis of the study of c . 1100 herbarium specimens, field observations and molecular (ITS, AFLPs) evidence, Primula sect . Auricula is classified into two subsections, 25 species and six subspecies. Primula auricula L. ssp. widmerae (Pax) L. B. Zhang stat. nov. , P. auricula Linn. ssp. tatriaca L. B. Zhang ssp. nov. , and P. latifolia Lapeyr. ssp. cynoglossifolia (Widmer) L. B. Zhang stat. nov. are newly described or combined; P. auricula s.l. is divided into two species: P. auricula Linn. and P. balbisii Lehm., representing the northern and the southern populations of P. auricula s.l. resolved in the molecular study, respectively; P. cottia Widmer and P. balbisii Lehm. are recovered from synonymy; P. grignensis D. M. Moser and P. pedemontana E. Thomas ex. Gaudin ssp. iberica Losa et P. Monts. are synonymized with P. hirsuta All. and P. pedemontana , respectively; P. clusiana is postulated to be an allopolyploid species. While researching Cardamine (Brassicaceae) in the Pyrenees, putative hybrid plants were found at two natural sites. Pollen grain viability, AFLP, and multivariate morphometric analyses were performed in order to assess the plants' presumed hybrid origin, establishing that natural hybridization between the diploids C. crassifolia and C. amara ssp. pyrenaea had occurred. A new diploid nothospecies, C. × enriquei (2 n = 2x = 16), is described. Examination of 18 morphological characters showed the intermediacy of the hybrid between the parental taxa in most characters. AFLP analyses of C. amara ssp. amara , ssp. austriaca , ssp. olotensis and C. raphanifolia , demonstrated the close position of the hybrid to C. crassifolia , and revealed that the highest number of markers were shared with the parents. Polymorphism found in the AFLP pattern of the hybrid suggested recurrent origin, segregation and/or backcrosses, although assessment of pollen viability indicated high male sterility. The hybridization event reported here represents the second documented case between the C. pratensis group and C. amara . A new nothosubspecies Cirsium  ×  vivantii is described after a molecular and morphological characterization of eight individuals collected in two separate valleys of the French central Pyrenees. Both hypervariable Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) markers and nuclear rDNA (ITS) and plastid ( trn L-F, TRNT-L) DNA sequences were analysed. The profiles of these hybrid samples were compared to those of 43 individuals belonging to their presumed parental taxa C. carniolicum ssp. rufescens and C. palustre . A total of 133 AFLP bands were scored from three primer-pair combinations. All 130 AFLP bands that amplified in the hybrid samples were present in either C. carniolicum ssp. rufescens , C. palustre or both taxa, supporting the participation of these plant genomes in the resulting hybrids. Several Additive Polymorphic Sites (APS) detected in the ITS sequences of the hybrid samples also confirmed their derived origins from ribotypes of the two parental taxa. The lack of exclusive AFLP markers and the nonconcerted evolution of rDNA polymorphisms towards either of the parental ribotypes indicated their recent origin. Plastid trn T-L sequences were used to identify C. palustre as the maternal parent of six of these hybrid individuals; either parent could have acted as the plastid genome donor for the other two individuals. A morphological study, both in the field and from herbarium material, showed that there are no convincing characteristics separating the Turkish endemics Iris stenophylla ssp. stenophylla and ssp. allisonii . A cytological survey revealed chromosome numbers of 2 n  = 24, 26 and 26 + 1B. No variation in either chromosome number or karyotype was found in ssp. allisonii , which always had 2 n  = 26, although the chromosome number and karyotypes of ssp. stenophylla were variable. Four different cytotypes have been reported for Senecio jacobaea L. ssp. jacobaea throughout Europe, with the most common occurrence of tetraploids (2 n  = 40). Here we present a survey of previously published chromosome number data on this subspecies and its geographical distribution, and focus on populations from Pannonia and the Carpathians. Two ploidy levels have been determined in the study area, using chromosome counting and flow cytometry: tetraploid (2 n  = 40) and octoploid (2 n  = 80). Fifty-one populations originating from Slovakia, Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Ukraine and Romania have been analysed. Multivariate morphometric analyses have been performed on 39 populations to study morphological differentiation between these two cytotypes. Plants traditionally used to dye carpets and woven matting in the eastern Mediterranean region were investigated. The survey was carried out in Kadirli, Feke, Aladağ, the surrounding villages of Adana, and in Osmaniye (Turkey). According to the survey results, 37 species of plants belonging to 29 families were used in natural dye production. The total dye contents of collected plants ranged from 1.5% to 10.0%. Mordants and dyes obtained from some of these plants were used to treat wool yarn and the yarn's dyed properties were tested. Some of the plants were also examined in terms of cultivation and fifteen were transferred to a Dye Plants Collection Garden. They were Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn. ssp. antitaurica Yalt., Arctium minus ssp. pubens (Bab.) Arènes, Chrysanthemum segetum L., Cistus creticus L., Cotinus coggygria Scop., Datisca cannabina L., Galium verum ssp. glabrescens Ehrend., Isatis tinctoria ssp. tomentella (Boiss. & Balansa) P.H.Davis, Melissa officinalis ssp. inodora Bornm., Mentha longifolia (L.) Potamogeton x salicifolius Wolfg. is one of the three most frequently recorded Potamogeton hybrids in the British Isles and Europe. It is thought to be the hybrid between P. lucens and P. perfoliatus. Its scattered distribution suggests that it has arisen several times in Britain. Most British populations of P. x salicifolius can be identified by their morphological characteristics, which are intermediate between those of the putative parents P. lucens and P. perfoliatus . However, the population at the Ouse Washes, Cambridgeshire, differs from other populations in its greater similarity to P . lucens . A genetic study of eight British populations, using six isozyme systems, revealed that most populations consist of a single multi-enzyme phenotype. This suggests that they were the result of a single hybridization event and are therefore maintained through vegetative reproduction. By contrast, the Ouse Washes population consists of three multi-enzyme phenotypes. This variation is likely to have resulted from multiple hybridization events, although we cannot exclude the possibility that the plants are partially fertile. The isozyme systems studied were unable to identify P. lucens and P. perfoliatus unambiguously, and consequently did not provide evidence for their putative parentage of P. x salicifolius. Melica (sensu lato ) is a genus with approximately 80 species distributed in the temperate regions of both hemispheres. The genus has been better studied morphologically than anatomically, but morphological patterns have led to conflicting subdivisions either into sections, or by segregation of the genus Bromelica . The lemma epidermis is examined here under scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for 40 species of Melica to see if it exhibits characters of systematic significance. Silica bodies and hooked papillae are reported in the lemma for the first time in the genus. Patterns of variation are evident within four structures that terminate in points: prickles, hooks, hooked papillae and macro-hairs. Fourteen qualitative characters for lemma epidermis are used in phenetic analyses. The presence or absence of macro-hairs conflicts with some other patterns, but gives some support to the classification of Papp. Characters associated with the split of the clusters were micro-hairs (straight and geniculate) and the distribution and frequency of prickles in both costal and intercostal zones. We investigated the hybrid origin of × Crepidiastrixeris denticulato-platyphylla using RAPDs and ITS sequence data. The putative parents Paraixeris denticulata and Crepidiastrum platyphyllum represent separate species, irrespective of geographical origin. The occurrence of species specific RAPD markers from P. denticulata and C. platyphyllum in × C. denticulato-platyphylla established unambiguously a hybrid origin between the two taxa. This was in line with the occurrence of a combination of morphological characters such as plant habit and floret numbers. The parent taxa differed from each other by 7 nucleotide substitutions and 2 indel events in the ITS region. The hybrids showed sequence additivity and most likely represent F1 plants, with the exception of two plants which were of possible F2 origin, possessing either the ITS sequences of one parent only, or one predominant ITS type. The hybrids occurred in two out of three localities where the parents occurred sympatrically. Plagiochila sect. Vagae is a large pantropical clade that is characterized morphologically by frequent terminal branching, vegetative distribution by propagules on the ventral surface of the leaves and a capsule wall with thickenings in all layers. Plagiochila corrugata from Brazil is characterized by strongly undulate, toothed leaf margins and represents the only known neotropical species of sect. Vagae with unispiral elaters. Plagiochila cambuena from Madagascar is distinguished by the same features. Maximum likelihood and parsimony analyses of 38 nrDNA ITS sequences of Plagiochila reveal P. corrugata and P. cambuena in a weakly (ML) to well (MP) supported monophyletic lineage within P.  sect.  Vagae . As an outcome of the morphological and molecular investigation, P. cambuena is relegated to the synonymy of P. corrugata. Plagiochila corrugata is placed in a Vagae -subclade with 11 further American species. The range of P. corrugata can be ascribed to long-range dispersal from the Neotropics rather than a Gondwanan distribution. Species from tropical Asia and Africa are placed at the base of the Vagae clade. Two new species of the genus Galium are described from the Iberian Peninsula: G. moralesianum Ortega-Olivencia & Devesa, and G. talaveranum Ortega-Olivencia & Devesa. The first grows on limestone or dolomitic-limestone outcrops in south-east Spain (the Segura and Gádor mountain ranges) and shows morphological similarities with G. boissieranum Ehrend. & Krendl, which is endemic to southern Spain (mountains of Málaga). The second inhabits the margins of water courses, alder stands and cork-oak dehesas (parkland-type systems) of the west of the Iberian Peninsula, and is morphologically reminiscent of G. mollugo L. Although the integration of DNA information in taxonomy has been invaluable, logistical problems relating to sampling can seriously limit its applicability. Here we describe the analysis of a morphologically cryptic species complex, in which we maximize the information present by using both a DNA phylogeny and a multivariate morphometric approach. The green pitviper Trimeresurus stejnegeri s.l. is widespread in Asia, with a number of described subspecies (some of which are considered full species by some workers) and two new species that have recently been described from Thailand. The phylogeny indicates three clades, which can also be discerned in the principal component analyses of morphological variation. Combining molecular and morphological information permits evaluation of the taxonomic position of populations not represented in the phylogeny − in particular, the subspecies T. s. chenbihui and T. s. yunnanensis . We discuss nomenclatural issues raised by this analysis, although these cannot be fully resolved until the holotypes of these subspecies can be examined. This study aimed to identify potential factors responsible for geographically structured morphological variation within the widespread Australian frogs Limnodynastes tasmaniensis Günther and L. peronii Duméril & Bibron. There was support for James's rule, and both latitude and present climate explained large amounts of the variation in body size and shape (particularly in L. peronii ). There was also some support for the influence of several biogeographical barriers. Finally, both species were sexually dimorphic for body size and the degree of sexual size dimorphism (SSD) varied geographically. Climate was an important explanation for SSD variation in L. peronii , while latitude was most important for L. tasmaniensis . A multivariate analysis to differentiate morphologically the populations of wild potatoes Solanum cardiophyllum ssp. cardiophyllum and S. cardiophyllum ssp. ehrenbergii was carried out. An analysis of the morphology and the viability of pollen of these potato populations was also made. The results of the morphometric analysis indicate that both subspecies are phenetically different. The pollen grain shape and size in ssp. cardiophyllum are different in northern and southern populations. Pollen diameter is significantly different between subspecies. Interspecific and intergeneric hybridizations were carried out in an investigation of genome homology between Hystrix patula and other species of Hystrix , as well as the generic relationships between H. patula and its related species. Meiotic pairing in the hybrids H. patula  ×  H. duthiei ssp. longearistata (Ns–), H. patula  ×  Pseudoroegneria spicata (St), H. patula  ×  Pse. libanotica (St), Elymus sibiricus (StH) ×  H. patula , H. patula  ×  E. wawawaiensis (StH), Roegneria ciliaris (StY) ×  H. patula , H. patula  ×  R. grandis (StY), and H. patula  ×  Psathyrostachys huashanica (Nsh) averaged 1.32, 6.53, 5.62, 10.08, 12.83, 3.57, 3.98, and 0.29 bivalents per cell, respectively. The results indicate that: (1) H. patula has no genome homology with H. duthiei ssp. longearistata or the Ns genome from Psathyrostachys ; (2) H. patula contains the same StH genomes as the Elymus species, and the St genome is homologous to the genome of Pse. spicata and Pse. libanotica ; and (3) H. patula has a low genome affinity with the StY genomes of Roegneria . Koelreuteria Laxm., a genus in the tribe Koelreuterieae (Sapindaceae), includes three tree species that are widely recognized as having horticultural merit. The two more closely related species, K. bipinnata Franch. and K. elegans (Seem.) A. C. Sm., are easily distinguished from K. paniculata Laxm. by their bipinnate leaves. In this study, both species were investigated cytogenetically and their karyotypes and heterochromatic patterns were compared. Koelreuteria bipinnata and K. elegans ssp. formosana (Hayata) F. G. Mey. both have 2 n  = 32 but their karyotypes present slight morphological differences when observed using conventional staining. Chromosome banding patterns are reported for the first time for this genus. Both species exhibit terminal heterochromatic blocks, as revealed by C-Giemsa and C-CMA3, but the band size varies between the species. Koelreuteria bipinnata has larger heterochromatic blocks and more GC-rich segments, while in K. elegans ssp. formosana these bands are smaller.
