We evaluated the cooling rate of hyperthermic subjects, as measured by rectal temperature (T(re)), during immersion in a range of water temperatures. On 4 separate days, seven subjects (4 men, 3 women) exercised at 65% maximal oxygen consumption at an ambient temperature of 39 degrees C until T(re) increased to 40 degrees C (45.4 +/- 4.1 min). After exercise, the subjects were immersed in a circulated water bath controlled at 2, 8, 14, or 20 degrees C until T(re) returned to 37.5 degrees C. No difference in cooling rate was observed between the immersions at 8, 14, and 20 degrees C despite the differences in the skin surface-to-water temperature gradient, possibly because of the presence of shivering at 8 and 14 degrees C. Compared with the other conditions, however, the rate of cooling (0.35 +/- 0.14 degrees C/min) was significantly greater during the 2 degrees C water immersion, in which shivering was seldom observed. This rate was almost twice as much as the other conditions (P < 0.05). Our results suggest that 2 degrees C water is the most effective immersion treatment for exercise-induced hyperthermia.  相似文献

The dimerization equilibrium of deuteroporphyrin IX and of mesoporphyrin IX in aqueous solutions were studied by fluorimetric techniques over the 0.01-1 microM concentration range, where dimerization is the dominant aggregation process. Deuteroporphyrin IX was studied at several temperatures over the range 22-37 degrees C, and mesoporphyrin at 25 and 37 degrees C. The magnitudes determined for the dimerization equilibrium constants (25 degrees C, neutral pH, phosphate-buffered saline) are 2.3 X 10(6)M-1 and 5.4 X 10(6)M-1 for the deutero and meso derivatives respectively. The meso, deutero and haemato species tested show a similar temperature effect, namely dimerization decreasing with increasing temperature, indicating the involvement of a negative enthalpy change. Van''t Hoff isochore of the dimerization constants determined for deuteroporphyrin IX was linear within the temperature range of 22-37 degrees C, allowing the calculation of the thermodynamic parameters. For deuteroporphyrin dimerization, those were found to be delta G0 = -36. 4kJ X mol-1; delta H0 = -46. 0kJ X mol-1 and delta S0 = -32.2J X K-1 X mol-1 (at neutral pH, 25 degrees C, phosphate-buffered saline), showing the process to be enthalpy-driven. Similar trends have been found for porphyrin species other than those studied here. Our data fit with a hypothesis giving a major role to the solvent in driving porphyrins to aggregate in aqueous solution. The magnitudes and directions of the energetic changes fit better with the expectation of the '' solvophobic force'' theory predicting enthalpy-driven association, than with the classic hydrophobic bonding, predicting the association to be entropy-driven.  相似文献

The glass transition of human hair and its dependence on water content were determined by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The relationship between the data is suitably described by the Fox equation, yielding for human hair a glass transition temperature of T(g) = 144 degrees C, which is substantially lower than that for wool (174 degrees C). This effect is attributed to a higher fraction of hydrophobic proteins in the matrix of human hair, which acts as an internal plasticizer. The applicability of the Fox equation for hair as well as for wool implies that water is homogeneously distributed in alpha-keratins, despite their complex morphological, semicrystalline structure. To investigate this aspect, hair was rendered amorphous by thermal denaturation. For the amorphous hair neither the water content nor T(g) were changed compared to the native state. These results provide strong support for the theory of a quasi-homogeneous distribution of water within alpha-keratins.  相似文献

Two common sources of error in blood pH and blood gas analysis were studied. The effect of delay in estimation was studied in 10 volunteers and 40 patients. Syringes were stored at 0 degree C, (crushed ice), 4 degrees C (refrigerator) and 22 degrees C (room temperature). The pressure of oxygen (PO2) fell significantly by 20 minutes at 4 degrees C and 22 degrees C but did not change significantly at 0 degree C for up to 30 minutes. Blood pH, pressure of carbon dioxide (PCO2), and base excess did not change significantly for up to 30 minutes at 4 degrees C and 22 degrees C and up to 60 minutes at 0 degrees C. The effect of air bubbles in the syringe was studied by leaving a single bubble or froth in contact with the blood for one to five minutes in 40 patients. Po2 rose significantly after two minutes'' contact with froth and two minutes'' contact with the air bubble, and PCO2 fell significantly after three minutes'' contact with the air bubble. Size of the bubble had little effect on rates of change. Blood pH, bicarbonate, TCO2, and base excess did not change significantly after up to five minutes'' contact. For accurate estimation of PO2 and PCO2 it is necessary to avoid frothing, to expel all air bubbles within two minutes, and to inject the sample into the machine within 10 minutes or store the syringe in crushed ice. The requirements for blood pH and base excess measurement are less exacting.  相似文献

Molecular mobility is known to be a key parameter in controlling the physical properties of materials and thus their quality and performance. Beyond glass transition related changes, attention should be called to the impact of local motions remaining in the glassy state. Gelatinized waxy maize starch at different sucrose contents (0-20% solids) was equilibrated between 0 and 14% water and sorption isotherms determined at 25 degrees C. The effect of water and sucrose content on the molecular mobility of glassy starch was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry through enthalpy relaxation studies and dynamical mechanical thermal analysis. The existence of sucrose-starch interactions was suggested by the sorption isotherms not following the expected additivity of the single component sorption curves. Contrary to the glass transition or associated alpha relaxation, water and sucrose affected differently the secondary relaxations. Indeed, the beta relaxation observed around -15 degrees C was shifted to lower temperature upon increasing hydration, and to higher temperature when sucrose content increased, suggesting a hindering of these local motions. Enthalpy relaxation of the ternary mixtures was studied following aging up to 668 h at Tg -15 degrees C. Ternary mixtures exhibited an enthalpy relaxation upon aging lower than starch alone as a sign of lower polymer mobility in the presence of small molecules, contrary to the free volume theory. Relaxation kinetics were characterized with the Cowie-Ferguson model and compared to literature data. The extent of the enthalpy relaxation appeared to be controlled by the distance between the aging temperature and the beta relaxation temperature.  相似文献

The levels of simian virus 40 (SV40) large T antigen in a tsA-transformed mouse macrophage line at the permissive (33 degrees C) and the nonpermissive (39 degrees C) temperature were examined by immunofluorescence, sodium dodecylsulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, complement fixation, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. When the cells were confluent and rested at 33 degrees C, and then were shifted to 39 degrees C, the amount of large T antigen per cell decreased, and most cells survived and remained phagocytic. When the cells were proliferating at 33 degrees C, and then were shifted to 39 degrees C, the cells died with only a small reduction in the amount of large T antigen. Therefore, the physiological state of the cells may determine the survival of cells by affecting the level of large T antigen after exposure to 39 degrees. The confluent cells may be rested with a concomitant decrease of large T antigen. The proliferating cells may not survive in the presence of a relatively high level of functionally defective large T antigen at 39 degrees C.  相似文献

The phase behavior of partially hydrated 1, 2-dioleoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DOPE) has been studied using differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction methods together with water sorption isotherms. DOPE liposomes were dehydrated in the H(II) phase at 29 degrees C and in the L(alpha) phase at 0 degrees C by vapor phase equilibration over saturated salt solutions. Other samples were prepared by hydration of dried DOPE by vapor phase equilibration at 29 degrees C and 0 degrees C. Five lipid phases (lamellar liquid crystalline, L(alpha); lamellar gel, L(beta); inverted hexagonal, H(II); inverted ribbon, P(delta); and lamellar crystalline, L(c)) and the ice phase were observed depending on the water content and temperature. The ice phase did not form in DOPE suspensions containing <9 wt% water. The L(c) phase was observed in samples with a water content of 2-6 wt% that were annealed at 0 degrees C for 2 or more days. The L(c) phase melted at 5-20 degrees C producing the H(II) phase. The P(delta) phase was observed at water contents of <0.5 wt%. The phase diagram, which includes five lipid phases and two water phases (ice and liquid water), has been constructed. The freeze-induced dehydration of DOPE has been described with the aid of the phase diagram.  相似文献

The condition of 259 infants transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of the Montreal Children''s Hospital from Oct. 1, 1974 to Mar. 31, 1975 was evaluated. Their transport was provided by personnel and equipment from the Montreal Children''s Hospital. When the transport team arrived at the referring hospital hypothermia (temperature of less than 36 degrees C) was present in 25.2% of the 163 infants for whom complete temperature measurements were available. Most (77.3%) of the infants were warmed during transport and only 3.1% arrived at the NICU with a temperature of less than 35 degrees C. The mortality was significantly higher in babies of all birth weight groups whose core temperature had been below the optimal temperature for survival (36 to 37 degrees C). It appears that the use of appropriate equipment and trained personnel can reduce the incidence of hypothermia and therefore the mortality in infants requiring transfer.  相似文献

Telenomus busseolae Gahan is the most important egg parasitoid of sugarcane stem borers in Iran. Laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate the functional response of T. busseolae to egg densities of Sesamia nonagrioides (Lefebvre) under four different temperatures (20, 25, 30 and 35°C). Results of logistic regression revealed a type III functional response for all temperatures tested and type of functional response was not affected by temperature. Roger's random parasite equation was fitted to observed data at 35°C. In the other data sets (collected data under 20, 25 and 30 °C) Roger's equation could not provide meaningful parameters, therefore Holling's disk equation was used to fit the data. The attack rate for T. busseolae varying from 0.001784 to 0.10704, 0.0026 to 0.152, 0.0024 to 0.144 and 0.000866 to 0.05196 per h and estimated handling times were 0.59, 0.50, 0.53 and 0.29 h at 20, 25, 30 and 35°C, respectively. Based on asymptotic 95% confidence intervals, functional response parameters did not differ significantly from 20 to 30°C, which indicates that handling time and attack rate are least affected by the temperature changes. The results suggest a similar performance of T. busseolae against S. nonagrioides eggs at temperatures of 20–30°C. These results show that T. busseolae is well adapted to temperature changes during the sugarcane growing season.  相似文献

Moisture sorption isotherms of figs with and without glucose syrup (at 20% and 40%, w/w) were determined at 5 °C, 25 °C, and 40 °C. A static gravimetric method was used under 0.11–0.84 water activity ranges for the determination of sorption isotherms that were found to be typical type ΙΙΙ for control sample. The inclusion of glucose syrup had significant effects on the sorption isotherms, and the moisture content of samples at each a w decreased with increasing temperature. The experimental data were fitted well with two-parameter Brunauer–Emmet–Teller, three-parameter Guggenheim–Anderson–de Boer, and four-parameter Peleg models that all had R 2 of greater than 0.99. The net isosteric heats of sorption were estimated using the Clausius–Clapeyron equation from the equilibrium data at different temperatures. It was found that the addition of glucose syrup significantly increased the amount of monolayer water and the isosteric heat of sorption. Both water activity and isosteric heat of sorption increased with glucose syrup level and the shape and status of sorption isotherms tend to change toward the typical sigmoid shape of most food systems.  相似文献

The ability of a temperature-sensitive (ts) mutant of reovirus, ts261-b, to synthesize virus-specific RNAs and proteins during infection at the nonpermissive temperature (37 degrees C) was investigated. The relative amounts of the mutant virus-specific single-stranded (ss) RNA''s and double-stranded (ds) RNA''s synthesized in cells at 37 degrees C were 20 to 25% as much as those synthesized in the wild-type virus-infected cells. The 10 segments of the mutant ds RNAs and the three size classes of the ss RNAs were synthesized in the usual proportions. The methylation of the mutant viral mRNA''s (ss RNAs) was not blocked at 37 degrees C in infected cells. A striking temperature-sensitive restricted function of the ts261-b mutant was expressed in the synthesis of the viral proteins. This study, which uses an in vitro protein-synthesizing system reconstituted with an endogenous polysomal fraction and a postribosomal supernatant from reovirus-infected cells, has demonstrated that the endogenous polysomes obtained from ts261-b mutant-infected cells at 37 degrees C are not active in the synthesis of the viral polypeptides of known molecular weights, and the amounts of the mutant viral polypeptides synthesized in vitro by these polysomes are 5 to 9% of those synthesized by the corresponding fraction from wild-type-infected cells. The impaired protein-synthesizing capacity of the mutant virus-specific polysomes can be restored during maintenance of the infected cells at 30 degrees C after shift-down from 37 degrees C. The in vitro synthesis of viral polypeptides of known size by the active endogenous polysomes derived from cells infected at the permissive temperature is accelerated by the addition of the postribosomal supernatant obtained from cells infected at the permissive temperature. The postribosomal supernatant from mutant-infected cells at 37 degrees C did not have a stimulatory effect, but rather, it inhibited in vitro viral protein synthesis.  相似文献

A specific effect of cardiolipin on fluidity of mitochondrial membranes was demonstrated in Tetrahymena cells acclimated to a lower temperature in the previous report (Yamauchi, T., Ohki, K., Maruyama, H. and Nozawa, Y. (1981) Biochim. Biophys. Acta 649, 385-392). This study was further confirmed by the experiment using fluorescence polarization of 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH). Anisotropy of DPH for microsomal and pellicular total lipids from Tetrahymena cells showed that membrane fluidity of these lipids increased gradually as the cells were incubated at 15 degrees C after the shift down of growth temperature from 39 degrees C. However, membrane fluidity of mitochondrial total lipids was kept constant up to 10 h. This finding is compatible with the result obtained using spin probe in the previous report. Additionally, the break-point temperature of DPH anisotropy was not changed in mitochondrial lipids whereas those temperatures in pellicular and microsomal lipids lowered during the incubation at 15 degrees C. Interaction between cardiolipins and various phospholipids, which were isolated from Tetrahymena cells grown at 39 degrees C or 15 degrees C and synthesized chemically, was investigated extensively using a spin labeling technique. The addition of cardiolipins from Tetrahymena cells grown at either 39 degrees C or 15 degrees C did not change the membrane fluidity (measured at 15 degrees C) of phosphatidylcholine from whole cells grown at 39 degrees C. On the other hand, both cardiolipins of 39 degrees C-grown and 15 degrees C-grown cells decreased the membrane fluidity of phosphatidylcholine from Tetrahymena cells grown at 15 degrees C. The same results were obtained for phosphatidylcholines of mitochondria and microsomes. Membrane fluidity of phosphatidylethanolamine, isolated from cells grown at 15 degrees C, was reduced to a small extent by Tetrahymena cardiolipin whereas that of 39 degrees C-grown cells was not changed. Representative molecular species of phosphatidylcholines of cells grown at 39 degrees C and 15 degrees C were synthesized chemically; 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoylphosphatidylcholine for 39 degrees C-grown cells and dipalmitoleoylphosphatidylcholine for 15 degrees C-grown ones. By the addition of Tetrahymena cardiolipin, the membrane fluidity of 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoylphosphatidylcholine was not changed but that of dipalmitoleoylphosphatidylcholine was decreased markedly. These phenomena were caused by Tetrahymena cardiolipin. However, bovine heart cardiolipin, which has a different composition of fatty acyl chains from the Tetrahymena one, exerted only a small effect.  相似文献

Background

The distribution of residual effects in linear mixed models in animal breeding applications is typically assumed normal, which makes inferences vulnerable to outlier observations. In order to mute the impact of outliers, one option is to fit models with residuals having a heavy-tailed distribution. Here, a Student''s-t model was considered for the distribution of the residuals with the degrees of freedom treated as unknown. Bayesian inference was used to investigate a bivariate Student''s-t (BSt) model using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods in a simulation study and analysing field data for gestation length and birth weight permitted to study the practical implications of fitting heavy-tailed distributions for residuals in linear mixed models.

Methods

In the simulation study, bivariate residuals were generated using Student''s-t distribution with 4 or 12 degrees of freedom, or a normal distribution. Sire models with bivariate Student''s-t or normal residuals were fitted to each simulated dataset using a hierarchical Bayesian approach. For the field data, consisting of gestation length and birth weight records on 7,883 Italian Piemontese cattle, a sire-maternal grandsire model including fixed effects of sex-age of dam and uncorrelated random herd-year-season effects were fitted using a hierarchical Bayesian approach. Residuals were defined to follow bivariate normal or Student''s-t distributions with unknown degrees of freedom.

Results

Posterior mean estimates of degrees of freedom parameters seemed to be accurate and unbiased in the simulation study. Estimates of sire and herd variances were similar, if not identical, across fitted models. In the field data, there was strong support based on predictive log-likelihood values for the Student''s-t error model. Most of the posterior density for degrees of freedom was below 4. Posterior means of direct and maternal heritabilities for birth weight were smaller in the Student''s-t model than those in the normal model. Re-rankings of sires were observed between heavy-tailed and normal models.

Conclusions

Reliable estimates of degrees of freedom were obtained in all simulated heavy-tailed and normal datasets. The predictive log-likelihood was able to distinguish the correct model among the models fitted to heavy-tailed datasets. There was no disadvantage of fitting a heavy-tailed model when the true model was normal. Predictive log-likelihood values indicated that heavy-tailed models with low degrees of freedom values fitted gestation length and birth weight data better than a model with normally distributed residuals.Heavy-tailed and normal models resulted in different estimates of direct and maternal heritabilities, and different sire rankings. Heavy-tailed models may be more appropriate for reliable estimation of genetic parameters from field data.  相似文献

Twenty-seven patients with Raynaud''s syndrome had their digital vessel patency assessed by Doppler ultrasound after different thermal stresses. Digital vessel patency rates differed significantly after stresses at 15 degrees C and 45 degrees C. In a randomised controlled trial placebo and heparin had no effect either on patients'' symptoms or on the patency of their digital vessels. Plasma exchange improved both symptoms and vessel patency rates at 15 degrees C and 21 degrees C. Improvement in seven out of eight of these patients has been maintained for six months. Assessing digital vessel patency by Doppler techniques allow continuous, atraumatic, and safe evaluation of the effects of different methods of treatment on the patency of the digital vessels and has helped to indicate that plasma exchange is a useful adjunct in the management of patients with severe Raynaud''s syndrome.  相似文献

The contribution of hyperthermia to the differential leukocytosis of exercise remains obscure. This study examined changes in circulating sympathoadrenal hormone concentrations and patterns of leukocyte and lymphocyte subset (CD3(+), CD4(+), CD8(+), CD19(+), CD3(-)16(+)/56(+)) redistribution during exercise, with and without a significant rise of rectal temperature (T(re)). Ten healthy men [age 26.9 +/- 5.7 (SD) yr, body mass 76.0 +/- 10.9 kg, body fat 13.9 +/- 4.6%, peak O(2) consumption: 48.0 +/- 12.4 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1)] exercised for 40 min (65% peak O(2) consumption) during water immersion at 39 or 18 degrees C. T(re) increased from 37.2 to 39.3 degrees C (P < 0.0001) after 40 min of exercise in 39 degrees C water but was held constant to an increment of 0.5 degrees C during exercise in 18 degrees C water. Application of this thermal clamp reduced exercise-associated increments of plasma epinephrine (Epi) and norepinephrine (NE) by >50% (P < 0.05) and abolished the postexercise increase in cortisol. Thermal clamping also reduced the exercise-induced leukocytosis and lymphocytosis. Multiple regression demonstrated that T(re) had no direct association with lymphocyte subset mobilization but was significantly (P < 0.0001) correlated with hormone levels. Epi was an important determinant of total leukocytes, lymphocytes, and CD3(+), CD4(+), CD8(+), and CD3(-)CD16(+)/56(+) subset redistribution. The relationship between NE and lymphocyte subsets was weaker than that with Epi, with the exception of CD3(-)CD16(+)/56(+) counts, which were positively (P < 0.0001) related to NE. Cortisol was negatively associated with leukocytes, CD14(+) monocytes, and CD19(+) B- and CD4(+) T-cell subsets but was positively related to granulocytes. We conclude that hyperthermia mediates exercise-induced immune cell redistribution to the extent that it causes sympathoadrenal activation, with alterations in circulating Epi, NE, and cortisol.  相似文献

The temperature and cell volume dependence of the NMR water proton line-width, spin-lattice, and spin-spin relaxation times have been studied for normal and sickle erythrocytes as well as hemoglobin A and hemoglobin S solutions. Upon deoxygenation, the spin-spin relaxation time (T2) decreases by a factor of 2 for sickle cells and hemoglobin S solutions but remains relatively constant for normal cells and hemoglobin A solutions. The spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) shows no significant change upon deoxygenation for normal or sickle packed red cells. Studies of the change in the NMR linewidth, T1 and T2 as the cell hydration is changed indicate that these parameters are affected only slightly by a 10-20% cell dehydration. This result suggests that the reported 10% cell dehydration observed with sickling is not important in the altered NMR properties. Low temperature studies of the linewidth and T1 for oxy and deoxy hemoglobin A and hemoglobin S solutions suggest that the "bound" water possesses similar properties for all four species. The low temperature linewidth ranges from about 250 Hz at -15 degrees C to 500 Hz at -36 degrees C and analysis of the NMR curves yield hydration values near 0.4 g water/g hemoglobin for all four species. The low temperature T1 data go through a minimum at -35 degrees C for measurements at 44.4 MHz and -50 degrees C for measurements at 17.1 MHz and are similar for oxy and deoxy hemoglobin A and hemoglobin S. These similarities in the low temperature NMR data for oxy and deoxy hemoglobin A and hemoglobin S suggest a hydrophobically driven sickling mechanism. The room temperature and low temperature relaxation time data for normal and sickle cells are interpreted in terms of a three-state model for intracellular water. In the context of this model the relaxation time data imply that type III, or irrotationally bound water, is altered during the sickling process.  相似文献

Samples of 1 M KCl solution and 10 samples of intact frog striated muscle were studied at 4-7 degrees C and/or at 21-22 degrees C. Field inhomogeneity was minimized by using small sample volumes and by using a superconducting magnet designed specifically to provide highly homogeneous fields. In the present experiments, magnetic field inhomogeneity was measured to contribute less than 15% to the free induction decay observed for intracellular 39K. The signal-to-noise ratio of the measurements was enhanced by means of extensive time-averaging. The rates of nuclear relaxation for 39K in aqueous solution were 22 +/- 3 (mean +/- 95% confidence limits) s-1 at 4-7 degrees C and 15 +/- 2 s-1 at 21-22 degrees C. For intracellular 39K, (1/T2) was measured to be 327 +/- 22 s-1 and 229 +/- 10 s-1 at the lower and higher temperatures, respectively. The corresponding values for (1/T1) in the same muscle samples were 198 +/- 31 s-1 and 79 +/- 15 s-1 at 4-7 degrees C and at 21-22 degrees C, respectively. These results for 39K are similar to those previously obtained for intracellular 23Na. Since less than 1% of the intracellular 23Na has been estimated to be immobilized, fractional immobilization of intracellular 39K is also likely to be insubstantial.  相似文献

The distribution of the dinoflagellate genus Ceratium Schrank (Dinophyceae) in the North Atlantic and adjacent seas was studied by a combination of new observations on a large number of plankton samples collected from the northeastern Atlantic and North Sea, data from cruises off the east coast of North America and Caribbean Sea, and reports in the literature of the past 90 years. Seventy species were recorded, and their distribution was examined by several methods. Distribution maps were plotted for all species, and from these the ranges of temperature tolerance were derived. The 240 sets of data, which took the form of lists of species present in 5° latitude / longitude blocks obtained from the new work and the published material, were analyzed by clustering and ordination multivariate techniques using the programs Twinspan and Decorana. Analysis of the individual species showed that surface water temperature is the most important factor determining distribution and the number of species in a particular area. Warm water and /or low latitudes have many more species than cold waters and/or high latitudes. For example, at 5°N there are on average 23 species per block, whereas at 60° N there are only 8 species. On the basis of this work, the Ceratium species are divided into Group 1, Arctic-temperate species normally only found in water of less than 15°C; Group 2, cosmopolitan species, which are found virtually everywhere and are the species most likely to form blooms or “brown water”; Group 3, intermediate species, which extend into neither the coldest nor the warmest water; Group 4, temperate-tropical species, which have a lower temperature boundary of 5°–12° C; Group 5, warm-temperate-tropical species with a lower temperature boundary of 14°–15°C; and Group 6, tropical species, which are rarely found in water of less than 20° C. Analysis of the sample sites also confirmed the predominant influence of temperature, and the Atlantic Ocean was divided into four biogeographical zones of which the boundaries follow isotherms of surface water temperature. Zone 1 consists of the Arctic and subarctic area, with the southern boundary closely following the 10° mean annual temperature (MAT) line. Zone 2 is an intermediate or cold-temperate zone, of which the southern boundary follows the winter 10° C MAT isotherm or the similarly placed summer 15° isotherm. Zone 3 is the warm-temperate or subtropical zone, which is very broad. The southern boundary closely follows the 25°C summer isotherm. Zone 4 is the tropical zone, where water temperature is never likely to be much less than 23°C. These findings are discussed in relation to experimental work and environmental observations. We suggest that the genus Ceratium provides an excellent tool for defining ocean currents and temperature changes and may become of value in studies of global change.  相似文献

Several isolates, belonging to two new species of the same novel genus of gamma-proteobacteria, were recovered from drilled well (borehole) and spa water at S?o Gemil in central Portugal. These organisms are phylogenetically most closely related to the strictly intracellular uncultured species of the genus Rickettsiella, which cause disease in arthropods, and to the facultatively intracellular species of the genus Legionella, some of which cause Legionnaires' disease and Pontiac fever. The S?o Gemil strains grew only on media containing charcoal, as is also true of the species of the genus LEGIONELLA: Unlike the vast majority of Legionella isolates, the new isolates did not require L-cysteine or ferric pyrophosphate for growth but like the legionellae had an absolute requirement for alpha-ketoglutarate. Strains SGT-39(T) and SGT-56 grew consistently between 30 and 43 degrees C, while strains SGT-108(T) and SGT-109 grew between 30 and 40 degrees C. The pH ranges for growth of these organisms were surprisingly narrow: strains SGT-39(T) and SGT-56 grew between pH 6.3 and 7.3, while strains SGT-108(T) and SGT-109 grew between pH 6.3 and 7.0. Both organisms proliferated in the amoeba Hartmannella vermiformis but did not grow in U937 human cells. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis and physiological, biochemical, and chemical analysis we describe two new species of one novel genus; one species is represented by strain SGT-39(T), for which we propose the name Aquicella lusitana, while strain SGT-108(T) represents a second species of the same genus, for which we propose the name Aquicella siphonis.  相似文献
