In a 2-yr study, the impacts of different plastic soil mulches, insecticides, and predator releases on Frankliniella thrips and their natural enemies were investigated in field-grown peppers. Ultraviolet light (UV)-reflective mulch significantly reduced early season abundance of adult thrips compared with standard black plastic mulch. This difference diminished as the growing seasons progressed. Late season abundance of thrips larvae was higher in UV reflective mulch compared with black mulch plots. The abundance of the predator Orius insidiosus (Say) was significantly lower in UV-reflective mulch compared with black mulch treatments. Infection of plants with tomato spotted wilt virus, a pathogen vectored by Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), was <6%. In the year with the higher disease incidence (2000), UV-reflective mulch plots had significantly less disease (1.9%) compared with black mulch plots (4.4%). Yield was significantly higher in UV-reflective mulch (24,529 kg/ha) compared with black mulch (15,315 kg/ha) during this year. Effects of insecticides varied with species of thrips. Spinosad reduced abundance of F. occidentalis, but not Frankliniella tritici. In contrast, esfenvalerate and acephate reduced numbers of F. tritici and Frankliniella bispinosa, but resulted in higher populations of F. occidentalis. Spinosad was the least disruptive insecticide to populations of O. insidiosus. Releases of O. insidiosus and Geocoris punctipes (Say) reduced populations of thrips immediately after releases; naturally occurring predators probably provided late season control of thrips. Our results suggest that UV-reflective mulch, combined with early season applications of spinosad, can effectively reduce abundance of thrips in field-grown pepper.  相似文献

Biological characteristics of western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysan., Thripae), were investigated on excised leaves of five vegetables: cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. Jingfeng 1), cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. var. Zhongnong 8), capsicum (Capsicum annuum L. var. Zhongjiao 5), kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. var. Gonggeizhe) and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum M. var. zhongza 9). The developmental time from egg to adult on the cucumber, cabbage, bean, capsicum and tomato leaf was 9.22 ± 0.13, 10.19 ± 0.08, 10.42 ± 0.06, 12.15 ± 0.07 and 12.91 ± 0.04 days, respectively. Survivorship of immatures on cucumber, cabbage and tomato was high (75–80%) but low on capsicum (50%). The total number of first instars produced was highest on cabbage (76.62 ± 11.79), while the daily first instar production was highest on cucumber (6.12 ± 1.81), whereas the total and daily first instar production rates were lowest on capsicum (7.67 ± 3.35 and 1.89 ± 0.91). F. occidentalis had the highest intrinsic rate of increase (rm) on cucumber (0.208), followed by cabbage (0.184), bean (0.164), tomato (0.100) and capsicum (0.017). The results indicate that cucumber was the most suitable host plant for F. occidentalis, whereas capsicum was the least suitable.  相似文献

A Japanese strain of Frankliniella fusca (Hinds) was reared under 4 temperature and two photoperiodic conditions on leaves of green bean. On the basis of the ratio of fore wing length to head width (RWL) of adult thrips we defined individuals with RWL above 3.7 as macropterous forms and those with RWL below 3.5 as brachypterous forms. Percentages of macropterous individuals among females were 0 % at 18 °C, 10.6 % at 22.5 °C, 21.8 % at 25 °C, and 77.5 % at 27.5 °C, under 15L–9D. The proportion of macropters among females developing under 15L–9D was no different from that among those developing under 10L–14D. These results indicate that photoperiod does not affect wing form, and suggest that the proportion of macropterous females increases with temperature. Although development time from hatching to adult eclosion, adult pre-oviposition period, adult head width, adult longevity, total fecundity, and fecundity schedule were compared between macropterous and brachypterous females developing at 25 °C and 15L–9D, these traits were not significantly different between the wing forms. Males of this experimental strain were all brachypterous.  相似文献

Exported organic table grapes from the U.S. are currently fumigated with methyl bromide to control quarantined pests such as western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande). An alternative treatment which is compatible with organic products is needed. In this study, controlled atmosphere with ultralow oxygen (ULO) treatment was studied to control thrips on harvested table grapes. ULO treatments with < 0.01 ppm oxygen at 3.3 °C for 1, 2, and 3 days were tested for thrips control. The 3-day ULO treatment achieved complete control of thrips. The treatment was also applied to Thompson seedless and Flame seedless grape varieties and grape quality was evaluated two weeks after the treatment. The ULO treatment had no negative impact on the visual quality of grapes. There were no significant differences in overall grape quality or premium quality berries between the ULO treatment and the control. The results indicated that the ULO treatment was effective and safe to control western flower thrips on table grapes and had a potential for commercial use.  相似文献

Abstract Weedy Lygodium ferns have become a serious fire hazard in Florida, introduced from the Old World Tropics. During joint CSIRO/USDA studies on potential biological control agents, a thrips species was found widely in south-eastern Asia causing severe damage to L. microphyllum . Described here as a new species, Octothrips lygodii , this is the second species of a poorly known genus that has been based on a single damaged male from Papua New Guinea. The genus is redefined, the two species distinguished, and notes given on the range of Thripidae reported from ferns worldwide.  相似文献

Abstract  Caliothrips fasciatus is native to the USA and western Mexico and overwintering adults are regular contaminants in the 'navel' of navel oranges exported from California, USA to Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere. Due to the long history of regular interceptions of C. fasciatus in Australia, a survey for this thrips was undertaken around airports, seaports, public recreational parks and major agricultural areas in the states of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia to determine whether C. fasciatus has successfully invaded Australia. Host plants that are known to support populations of C. fasciatus , such as various annual and perennial agricultural crops, urban ornamentals and weeds along with native Australian flora, were sampled for this thrips. A total of 4675 thrips specimens encompassing at least 76 species from a minimum of 47 genera, and three families were collected from at least 159 plant species in 67 families. Caliothrips striatopterus was collected in Queensland, but the target species, C. fasciatus , was not found anywhere. An undescribed genus of Thripidae, Panchaetothripinae, was collected from ornamental Grevillea (var. Robyn Gordon) at Perth (Western Australia) Domestic Airport, and is considered to be a native Australian species. This survey has provided valuable information on the background diversity of thrips species associated with various native and exotic plant species around major ports of entry and exit for four of five states in Australia. We suggest that the major reason C. fasciatus has not established in Australia is due to high adult mortality in navels that are kept at low storage temperatures (2.78°C) during an 18- to 24-day transit period from California to Australia.  相似文献

Sticky blue traps are a suitable and important tool for Western Flower Thrips population monitoring in greenhouses. They can be used in vegetables and in ornamentals, and provide important information on the current status of the pest population. However, such traps cannot be used in some susceptible plant species when they are flowering because at that stage the plants are more attractive to Western Flower Thrips than the traps. We therefore tried to increase trap attractiveness by combining the colour cue with an attractive odour cue. In laboratory experiments, we found a significant additive effect on attractiveness for two odours in traps provided with both the visual and the olfactory cues as compared to traps with either cue alone. However, these results could not easily be reproduced in greenhouses. The main factors responsible for this failure seem to be (1) the only moderate, additive increase of trap attractiveness when using combined visual and olfactory cues, and (2) the problems associated with odour diffusion. Unless a more attractive odour is found and a suitable odour dispenser is available, the use of odours to enhance sticky blue trap attractiveness for Western Flower Thrips cannot be recommended and, given the added cost for the trap, may not be affordable for growers.  相似文献

Abstract  The study was conducted to characterise the underlying resistance mechanisms responsible for high levels of pyrethroid resistance in Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) in Australia. Seven commercially available pyrethroids (acrinathrin, alpha-cypermethrin, bifenthrin, deltamethrin, esfenvalerate, permethrin and tau-fluvalinate) were evaluated against seven F. occidentalis strains collected from ornamentals, fruit and vegetables in three states of Australia. A Potter spray tower was used to test for pyrethroid resistance and all field strains were found to be resistant, with resistance ratios ranging from 15-fold deltamethrin to 1300-fold tau-fluvalinate. The two most resistant strains were further tested for detoxification enzymes that could be involved in resistance. Three synergists, piperonyl butoxide (PBO), diethyl maleate (DEM) and profenofos, which, respectively, inhibit the enzymes cytochrome P-450 monooxygenases, glutathione S -transferases and esterases, were used. The synergism data indicate that multiple mechanisms may be involved in pyrethroid resistance in Australian populations of F. occidentalis . Among the three synergists, PBO considerably reduced pyrethroid resistance in the selected strains compared with DEM and profenofos. The practical implication for PBO use to suppress pyrethroid resistance in F. occidentalis is elaborated.  相似文献

Abstract The genus Dendrothrips Uzel (Thysanoptera: Thripidae, Dendrothripinae) comprises 50 described species from the Old World, including a fourth species from Australia, D. williamsi sp. n. For many of these species no host plant has been recorded, but the genera and families of the recorded host plants of 27 species are tabulated. These thrips are mainly associated with trees and shrubs, and the plant families involved come from five of the six subclasses of the Dicotyledonae. Several Dendrothrips species are recorded from Oleaceae and Flacourtiaceae, but none from the major families of tropical trees, Moraceae and Lauraceae.  相似文献

The effects of larval density on the wing form determination of female tobacco thrips, Frankliniella fusca, were investigated by rearing thrips on leaf disks at 27.5 °C. The developmental period, head width, body length, and forewing length of individuals in each wing morph were determined to assess the relationships among larval density, growth, and wing form. Data showed that higher rearing densities increased the production of female F. fusca brachypters. There was no consistent difference in the mean developmental periods between the two wing morphs or among all 5 density treatments. The body length of females tended to decrease with increasing rearing density, but there was no significant difference in body size between the two wing morphs when they were reared under the same density level.  相似文献

Abstract  The relationship between western flower thrips (WFT) populations in flowers and catches on yellow sticky traps was investigated in a hydroponic strawberry crop in the Sydney area in 1999–2000. The thrips population was initially dominated by males, but by mid-summer it was composed primarily of females. At a point when approximately 60–65% of WFT on traps were female (approximately 20–30 females per trap), the overall density of thrips on traps and in the crop increased rapidly, resulting in severe damage to immature fruit. The sex ratio of 0.60–0.65 females corresponded very closely to a mean of five adult WFT per flower at the start of the trapping week, which was an infestation level previously calculated as the action threshold to prevent damage to young green fruit.  相似文献

Shortly after the initial detection of western flower thrips (WFT), Frankiniella occidentalis (Pergande), in Australia during 1993 a resistance management strategy based on the alternation of chemical groups was implemented. This study aimed to verify this strategy by field testing α-cypermethrin against WFT with and without chemical alternation. Up to 114 times α-cypermethrin resistance (at LC50) was detected and resistance increased with and without chemical alternation; however, chemical alternation did significantly reduce numbers of thrips compared with a nonalternation strategy. Resistance has the potential to undermine the sustainable use of those chemicals to which there is no current detectable resistance. Consequently, chemicals with a high frequency and level of resistance against WFT need to be identified through monitoring and quickly eliminated from WFT chemical control recommendations.  相似文献

During the past two decades, onion thrips, Thrips tabaci Lindeman (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), has become a global pest of increasing concern in commercial onion (Allium cepa L.), because of its development of resistance to insecticides, ability to transmit plant pathogens, and frequency of producing more generations at high temperatures. T. tabaci feeds directly on leaves, causing blotches and premature senescence as well as distorted and undersized bulbs. T. tabaci can cause yield loss > 50% but can be even more problematic when it transmits Iris yellow spot virus (family Bunyaviridae, genus Tospovirus, IYSV). IYSV was identified in 1981 in Brazil and has spread to many important onion-producing regions of the world, including several U.S. states. IYSV symptoms include straw-colored, dry, tan, spindle- or diamond-shaped lesions on the leaves and scapes of onion plants and can cause yield loss up to 100%. Here, we review the biology and ecology of T. tabaci and discuss current management strategies based on chemical, biological, and cultural control as well as host resistance. Future directions for research in integrated pest management are examined and discussed.  相似文献

UV‐absorbing films and nets are frequently used as covering materials for netted greenhouses and film tunnels in protected cultivation systems. This study explored the effects of such materials on the dispersal behaviour of western flower thrips (WFT), Frankliniella occidentalis, in flight cages under greenhouse conditions with additional artificial UV‐A light sources. The study involved release–recapture experiments in choice and no‐choice layouts. Different trapping methods were compared (blue sticky cards, plants and transparent cards) for recapture of thrips. In choice experiments, insects were released from a black box compartment between two tunnels covered with either UV‐transmitting or UV‐absorbing materials. A significantly higher proportion of (82–98%) WFT was recaptured in UV‐transmitting tunnels compared with UV‐absorbing tunnels. In no‐choice experiments, WFT were found to infiltrate the tunnels at different rates depending on the trap type used and experimental layout. In small‐scale dispersal experiments using blue sticky cards and plants as traps, infiltration was not significantly different between UV‐absorbing and UV‐transmitting tunnels, whereas when using transparent cards, WFT penetrated further into the UV‐transmitting plastic film tunnels. In larger‐scale dispersal experiments, plants or blue sticky cards were arranged in concentric circles around a source plant at the release point. Dispersal was found to differ depending on the method of release, but WFT tended to exhibit reduced dispersal from source plants under UV‐deficient conditions. In conclusion, our data support the hypothesis that manipulation of spectral light properties using UV‐absorbing cladding materials for protected crop stands interferes with the orientation and host finding of WFT, resulting in reduced dispersal into and within plant stands in UV‐deficient environments.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Based on both morphological and molecular information, two new euplotid genera Apodiophrys n. g. and Heterodiophrys n. g. are described in the present paper. Apodiophrys n. g. is defined as sculptured Diophryinae with bipartite adoral zone; frontoventral cirri arranged in Diophrys‐pattern; marginal cirri located in two clearly separated groups. Heterodiophrys n. g. is recognizable by the combination of Diophrys‐like frontoventral cirri and the unique structure of several marginal cirri that are arranged in a long row. The type species for both new genera, Apodiophrys ovalis n. sp. and Heterodiophrys zhui n. sp., collected from southern China sea, are described. The small subunit rRNA (SSU rRNA) gene sequences for both new taxa are determined. Phylogenetic analyses based on these data indicate that Apodiophrys is most closely related to Paradiophrys, which then clusters with Uronychia species. Thus, Apodiophrys–Paradiophrys is separated from other typical Diophrys‐like genera in the SSU rRNA gene trees. The new genus Heterodiophrys is basal to the sister group of Diophrys–Diophryopsis, hence belongs to the “core”Diophrys‐complex.  相似文献

A new species of diplogastrid nematode, Leptojacobus dorci n. gen., n. sp., was isolated from adults of the stag beetle Dorcus ritsemae (Coleoptera: Lucanidae) that were purchased from a pet shop in Japan. Leptojacobus n. gen. is circumscribed by a very thin, delicate body and by a small stoma with minute armature. A combination of other stomatal characters, namely the division of the cheilostom into adradial plates, the symmetry of the subventral stegostomatal sectors, and the presence of a thin, conical dorsal tooth, further distinguishes Leptojacobus n. gen. from other genera of Diplogastridae. Phylogenetic analysis of nearly full-length SSU rRNA sequences support the new species, together with an isolate identified previously as Koerneria luziae, to be excluded from a clade including all other molecularly characterized diplogastrids with teeth and stomatal dimorphism. Therefore, the new species will be of importance for reconstruction of ancestral character histories in Diplogastridae, a family circumscribed by a suite of feeding-related novelties.  相似文献

A generalist predatory mite, Anystis baccarum (L.), was evaluated as a biological control agent against western flower thrips (WFT), Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande). Laboratory assays showed A. baccarum was able to kill a mean of five WFT adult females or nine WFT larvae in 24 h, out-performing both Neoseiulus cucumeris (Oudemans) and Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot. Next, a greenhouse assay was conducted to assess the performance of A. baccarum on potted chrysanthemums, comparing their efficacy to that provided by N. cucumeris slow-release sachets which represented the commercial standard in Canada. A combined treatment which incorporated both predatory mite species was also included to assess compatibility and potential additive effects of using both species together for WFT management. Introduction of two A. baccarum per pot was as efficacious as 125 N. cucumeris in terms of WFT control; however, despite the lack of significance between the level of WFT control obtained in the single predatory species treatments and the combined treatment, only the combination treatment suppressed WFT populations to levels that were almost unchanged over 8 weeks. There was no significant difference between the number of N. cucumeris recovered from plants in the single-species and the combination treatments, demonstrating the functional compatibility of the two predators. Additionally, WFT feeding damage was significantly lower on the A. baccarum-treated plants than on the untreated control and the N. cucumeris treatment. This study, together with our development of a prototype mass rearing method, shows that A. baccarum could be successfully used as a biocontrol agent for WFT.
