Field experiments were conducted in St Paul, MN, USA, to test the hypothesis that early season declines in the red:far-red ratio (R:FR) associated with FR reflection from neighbouring leaves have a role in regulating barley development. Treatment plants were grown adjacent to densely sown border rows of barley. The borders functioned to reflect far-red (FR), which reduced R:FR within the treatment plant light environment without shading treatment plants. Barriers were set in the soil to minimize root interactions between treatment plants and borders. Treatment plants were spaced either 2 or 16 cm apart. The presence of borders significantly increased shoot leaf and internode lengths at both plant spacings. Leaf sheath length data suggest that interactions between 2 cm spaced treatment plants enhanced plant responsiveness to the presence of borders. Border treatments shortened the period of vegetative growth prior to initiation of main shoot floral primordia. Bordered plants formed fewer main shoot leaves, initiated internode elongation at a lower node, and had slightly earlier heading dates than unbordered controls. Leaf appearance rate was not influenced by border treatments. We conclude that barley shoot development is photomorphogenically modulated by R:FR. Early season shifts in R:FR could have a significant influence on shoot development given that barley has the capacity to detect and developmentally respond to declines in R:FR associated with FR reflection from neighbours.  相似文献

The predator Orius sauteri (Poppius) (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) is an effective arthropod natural enemy of thrips, especially Thrips palmi Karny (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), a serious pest of vegetables. First, we studied O. sauteri's response to the odour from thrips-infested eggplant [Solamum melongena L. (Solanaceae)] in a laboratory by two-choice experiments using a Y-tube olfactometer. When detached eggplant leaves were used as odour sources, O. sauteri preferred the volatiles from uninfested leaves to clean air. Concerning preferences among differently infested leaves, O. sauteri preferred the volatiles from plants infested with 10–100 thrips per leaf to uninfested leaves, but showed no significant preference for artificially damaged leaves over uninfested leaves. Similar results were obtained when complete plants were tested as the odour source. Second, release and recapture experiments in a greenhouse, a more realistic set of conditions, were conducted to confirm whether a significant preference for infested plants occurred at similar infestation levels as in the laboratory. Trends favouring infested plants were detected at densities of five and 500 thrips per plant; however, at the five thrips per plant, this trend was due to the large deviation seen in infested plants in only one replicate. In light of the low tolerable thrips density of eggplant, it is necessary to confirm whether artificial treatments with chemicals induce the emission of herbivore-induced plant volatiles that can attract O. sauteri and prolong its residence time on the leaf.  相似文献

Competitive ability of a traditional winter wheat cultivar (Maris Widgeon) was compared with two modem cultivars (Hereward and Genesis) when grown organically in each of four seasons in Gloucestershire, UK. In two seasons, cultivars were compared at two sowing dates (September and October or November). Cv. Maris Widgeon was the tallest cultivar and intercepted most photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), particularly if sown early. Cv. Hereward was taller than cv. Genesis when sown early. Cv. Maris Widgeon accumulated most nitrogen and dry matter early in the season (until the end of March) when sown early, but not when sown late. Relative nitrogen and dry matter accumulation by cultivars later in the season depended on season and sowing date. In one season cv. Maris Widgeon had significantly more early season ground cover. Cultivars did not differ significantly in early tiller production. Although most of these indirect measures of competitive ability were greater for the older variety cv. Maris Widgeon, infestation of Veronica spp. was greater in plots of this cultivar than in plots of either one or both of the shorter cultivars in two successive seasons. In the 1993/94 season, the soil seedbank from plots previously cropped with cv. Maris Widgeon produced more seedlings of Sinapis awensis. In the 1994 / 95 season, cv. Maris Widgeon plots contained less weed in terms of ground cover, numbers, dry matter and nitrogen than the other cultivars, and soil sampled from plots previously cropped with cv. Hereward sown late gave rise to larger numbers of weeds than cv. Maris Widgeon. Sowing date affected weed burdens and emergence to a much greater extent than wheat cultivar. In years and sowing date treatments with relatively low weed presence the shorter cultivars tended to yield more than cv. Maris Widgeon. When weed burdens were severe cv. Maris Widgeon yields were equal to or greater than those of either cvs Hereward or Genesis. The results suggest that the traditional tall cv. Maris Widgeon could be used beneficially to tolerate weeds in organic systems when high weed infestations were anticipated, but could not be relied upon to suppress weed development, and in some circumstances could actually encourage certain species.  相似文献

Thermography is a non-destructive method used to monitor pest and disease infestations, as it is related to changes in plant water status. Surface temperature differences of the crop canopy may be an indicator of nematode infestation as the parasitation of the root system reduces evaporation of leaves. To test the potential of high resolution digital thermography to detect Heterodera schachtii infestation, experiments using increasing nematode densities and different sugar beet varieties were conducted. From June to August 2003 the crop canopy temperature was measured with a thermal infrared camera from a helicopter. A significant correlation between canopy temperature and nematode density was observed with the susceptible cultivar Monza whereas the resistant cultivar Paulina did not show any correlation. Mean temperature comparison showed significant differences between the lowest infestation level (500 eggs and larvae/100 ml soil) and the highest infestation level (>1500 eggs and larvae/100 ml soil). At the beginning of the season canopy temperature differences between healthy and nematode infested sugar beets were higher (approximately 1 degree C) compared to later assessment dates when the water supply in the soil was limited. Since low and high nematode infestation could be clearly distinguished with the susceptible cultivar by airborne thermal images, thermography might be a useful tool for monitoring sugar beet fields.  相似文献

The efficacy of Neoseiulus californicus (a generalist predatory mite) for the biological control of Tetranychus urticae, was compared to release of Phytoseiulus persimilis (a specialist predatory mite) and an acaricide treatment in sweet pepper plants grown in greenhouse tunnels in a hot and arid climate. To ensure uniform pest populations, spider mites were spread on pepper plants in two seasons; a natural infestation occurred in one season. Predators were released prophylactically and curatively in separate tunnels when plants were artificially infested with spider mites, and at low and moderate spider mite populations when infestations occurred naturally. Although spider mite populations did not establish well the first year, fewer spider mites were recovered with release of N. californicus than with all other treatments. In the second year, spider mites established and the prophylactic release of N. californicus compared favorably with the acaricide-treated plants. In the course of monitoring arthropod populations, we observed a significant reduction in western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis) populations in tunnels treated with N. californicus as compared with non-treated control tunnels. Our field trials validate results obtained from potted-plant experiments and confirm that N. californicus is a superior spider mite predator at high temperatures and low humidities.  相似文献

In greenhouse studies, we evaluated a commercial formulation of the entomopathogenic nematode Steinernema feltiae and the inoculative release of the thrips-parasitic nematode Thripinema nicklewoodi against western flower thrips (WFT), Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande infesting potted chrysanthemums. Foliar sprays of S. feltiae applied at 1.25-2.5×103 IJ mL-1 and 1000 - 2000 L ha-1 at 3-day intervals alone (targeting feeding stages) or in combination with soil applications (simultaneously treating non-feeding stages in the soil at the same rates) decreased but did not provide adequate control of thrips in flowering plants artificially infested with a dense population. Similar nematode treatments applied for four to five applications at 6-day intervals in two batches of initially clean chrysanthemums failed to prevent unacceptable damage to flowers and leaves from a dense natural infestation within the greenhouse. Although some IJ survived up to 48 h within flowers and flower buds, few nematode-infected thrips (larvae and adults) were recovered. In studies with T. nicklewoodi (which is not amenable for mass production), the inoculative releases of two parasitized hosts per plant enabled the nematode to become established within existing WFT populations under greenhouse conditions. However, relatively poor transmission and slow speed of kill (nematode primarily suppresses populations through host sterilization) prevented low level inoculations being effective over a single crop cycle. Further studies showed that transmission of T. nicklewoodi persisted for nine host generations, infected up to 83% of adult thrips and provided long-term suppression of discrete caged populations, but only after uneconomically high thrips densities had been reached.  相似文献

Numbers of eggs and larvae of thrips {Kakothrips pisivorus (Westw.)) infesting pistils of various stocks of faba beans (Viciafaba L.) were recorded in different environments. By the end of flowering in spring beans, 25 times as many flowers were infested with, on average, twice as many thrips, as at the onset of flowering in winter beans. Within each of two seasons, levels of infestation varied up to 30-fold with location. At a single location, some bean stocks were much more heavily infested (greater proportions of flowers contained thrips and/or greater numbers of thrips per infested pistil) than others. Levels of infestation were not clearly associated with the closed-flower character (cf). Stocks with lush growth were more heavily infested than those with either generally restricted growth or with terminal inflorescences (ti). Those with white flowers, long pods or cytoplasmic male-sterility were more infested than those which contrasted for these three characters. The path of the pollen tubes was blocked by eggs of thrips in less than 0–5% of flowers. Infestation had no apparent effect on the fertilisation of flowers.  相似文献

Plants under herbivore attack produce volatiles, thus attracting natural enemies of the herbivores. However, in doing so, the plant becomes more conspicuous to other herbivores. Herbivores may use the odours as a cue to refrain from visiting plants that are already infested, thereby avoiding competition for food, or, alternatively, to visit plants with defences weakened by earlier attacks. We investigated the response of one species of herbivore (the spider mite Tetranychus urticae) to odours emanating from cucumber plants infested by conspecific or heterospecific (the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis) herbivores. Olfactometer experiments in the laboratory showed that spider mites have a slight, but significant, preference for plants infested with conspecifics, but strongly avoid plants with thrips. These results were substantiated with greenhouse experiments. We released spider mites on the soil in the centre of a circle of six plants, half of which were infested with either conspecifics or heterospecifics (thrips), whereas the other half were uninfested. It was found that 60–70% of the mites were recaptured on the plants within 5 h after release. Results of these experiments were in agreement with results of the olfactometer experiments: (1) significantly fewer spider mites were found on plants infested with thrips than on uninfested plants and (2) more mites were found on plants with conspecifics than on clean plants (although this difference was not significant). From a functional point of view it makes sense that spider mites prefer clean plants over thrips-infested plants, since thrips are not only competitors, but are also known as intraguild predators of spider mites. Suppressive effects of intercropping on Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) infestations have been reported in several crops. However, this study demonstrates that in year-round chrysanthemum, Dendranthema grandiflora Tzvelev, undersowing with subterranean clover, Trifolium subterraneum L., results in an increased thrips feeding damage. In a pot experiment, performed with chrysanthemum plants (cultivars Reagan and Tiger) grown with or without subterranean clover, significantly more leaves with silver and growth damage were found in the chrysanthemum plants with subterranean clover in comparison with the monocropped chrysanthemum plants. Similarly, the degree of deformation of leaf perimeter and leaf surface was higher in the top leaves of the intercropped chrysanthemum plant. In the soil experiment (only performed with Tiger and plants were grown in the soil in the greenhouse) intercropped chrysanthemum plants suffered a higher feeding damage as well. Analysis of the relation between silver or growth damage and the thrips pressure demonstrates that at similar thrips pressure in the intercropped chrysanthemum plants suffered significantly more damage. The higher thrips pressure in the intercropped chrysanthemum only explains the differences in damage partly. Changes in the reaction of chrysanthemum plants to thrips feeding or in the behaviour of the thrips, mediated by the presence of the non-host crop, are discussed. Our explanation is that chrysanthemum plants grown with clover are more susceptible to thrips feeding than monocropped plants. We conclude that undersowing with clover does not contribute to reduce damage by F. occidentalis in year-round chrysanthemum. Also, the influence of crop diversification on a pest cannot be foreseen until the specific characteristics of each individual crop – pest system are studied.  相似文献

Investigations were carried out at the Gezira Research Farm in the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. The greater majority of the seeds of Striga hermonthica can only be germinated by excretions from roots of certain plants not all of which can act as hosts for this parasite. Unless it becomes attached to a host plant, the Striga seedling dies. The growing of those plants whose roots can stimulate the germination of Striga seed but cannot be parasitized by it, may be a means of ridding infested land of this parasite. Green ovaries picked from flowering plants produce viable seeds if left to dry. Sorghum is sown in the field during the rainy season, viz. June to October: the earlier the sowing date within this period the greater is the Striga attack. In the field Striga seeds are distributed in the soil to a depth of at least 15 in. When Striga seeds are evenly distributed through the soil, the number of Striga seedlings attached to a sorghum root is proportional to the root's development. Size of sorghum seed has no effect on the root size of a sorghum plant and consequently no effect on the degree of parasitism. The effect of severe Striga attack on the sorghum plant is to produce a reduction of about 60% in leaf and root weight. No reduction of Striga attack is obtained when various micro-elements are coated on sorghum seeds before sowing. Field and laboratory experiments show that light irrigation of the sorghum crop during the normal sowing period increases the Striga attack and heavy irrigation decreases it. This result was not obtained in laboratory experiments when sorghum was sown out of season. Striga attack is lessened when conditions favouring growth of the sorghum crop are improved.  相似文献

The effects of co‐inoculation of Rhizoctonia solani and Colletotrichum lindemuthianum or Uromyces appendiculatus at different inoculum levels were studied on the disease dynamics and on the growth of bean plants under greenhouse conditions. Bean seeds were sown in R. solani‐infested soil. Additional experiments in which seedlings were transplanted to infested soil were also carried out. Conidial suspensions of C. lindemuthianum or uredospores of U. appendiculatus were inoculated onto leaves at plant developmental stages V2 and V3, respectively. Interactions between root rot and the aerial diseases were observed depending on the inoculum levels and on the timing of R. solani inoculation. Anthracnose severity tended to be higher on R. solani‐infected plants. Conversely, R. solani infection significantly reduced diameter of pustules and rust severity. When seedlings were transplanted to soil infested with low levels of R. solani, root rot severity and density of R. solani in the soil were magnified at high levels of C. lindemuthianum or U. appendiculatus. In these experiments, a synergistic interaction between root rot and anthracnose was observed to affect the plant dry weight. Antagonistic effects on the plant dry weight were found for the combination root rot/rust only when seeds were sown in infested soil.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. This study evaluated the effect of dispersal on the density and feeding impact of a phytophagous insect in relation to the spatial distribution of its host plants.
2. The interaction between density, dispersal, and feeding impact of western flower thrips on flowering chrysanthemum was quantified at three spatial scales, with infested and uninfested plants either isolated in 0.25 m2 individual cages, or enclosed together in 2.25 m2 communal cages or 75 m2 greenhouses.
3. In individual cages, the rate of dispersal from chrysanthemum plants to blue sticky traps increased with the density of thrips for females but not males. Uninfested plants consistently had fewer thrips when they were individually caged rather than enclosed with plants infested with adults, indicating that dispersal mediates inter-plant distribution of thrips.
4. The feeding impact of thrips on inflorescences was evaluated using the absorbance of ethanol extracts at wavelengths characteristic of yellow carotenoid pigments associated with chrysanthemum inflorescences (415, 445, and 472 nm). Increasing absorbance of extracts with increasing density of thrips per inflorescence suggests that feeding by thrips results in ruptured cells leaching carotenoid pigments.

In communal cages, the distribution of thrips was uniform for infested and uninfested plants, whereas the density and feeding impact of thrips in greenhouses were higher for infested than uninfested plants. The effect of egg density on establishment and dispersal of larvae of the western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, was evaluated in a 3-yr field study. Implications of these data for resistance management plans for Bt crops are discussed. Viable egg levels of 100, 200, 400, 800, and 1600 eggs per infested plant were evaluated in 2000, 2001, and 2002. A 3200 viable egg level was also tested in 2001 and 2002. All eggs were infested on one plant per subplot in a field that was planted to soybean, Glycine max (L.), in the previous year. For each subplot, the infested plant, three plants down the row, the closest plant in the adjacent row of the plot, and a control plant at least 1.5 m from any infested plant (six plants total) were sampled. In 2000, there were five sample dates between egg hatch and pupation, and in 2001 and 2002, there were six sample dates. On each sample date, four replications of each egg density were sampled for both larval recovery and plant damage. Initial establishment on a corn plant seemed to not be density-dependent because a similar percentage of larvae was recovered from all infestation rates. Plant damage and, secondarily, subsequent postestablishment larval movement were density-dependent. Very little damage and postestablishment movement occurred at lower infestation levels, but significant damage and movement occurred at higher infestation rates. Movement generally occurred at a similar time as significant plant damage and not at initial establishment, so timing of movement seemed to be motivated by available food resources rather than crowding. At the highest infestation level in 2001, significant movement three plants down the row and across the 0.76 m row was detected, perhaps impacting refuge strategies for transgenic corn.  相似文献

This paper studies the influence of previous infestation on the host quality of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) for aphids and the influence of previous infestation on sugar beet yellowing virus epidemiology. Sugar beet previously infested with Myzus persicae (Sulzer) or Aphis fabae Scopoli (Homoptera: Aphididae) had an improved host quality for subsequently infesting aphids of the same species. There was a significant negative relationship between the number of M. persicae infesting a plant and the proportion of those that died with a dark deposit in their stomachs, and a significant positive relationship between the number that settled on a plant and the number that infested it previously. Nymphs feeding on previously infested plants grew more rapidly than those on control plants. The beneficial effect of previous infestation persisted for at least 2 weeks and prolongation of the infestation beyond 2 weeks was of no further benefit to the aphids. Field grown sugar beet, previously colonised by M. persicae, was more susceptible to natural infestation by M. persicae up to 5 days after exposure. Previously infested plants were also more susceptible to infection with beet mild yellowing virus (BMYV) but not beet yellows virus (BYV), suggesting that the aphids on the previously infested sugar beet settled more readily and were more inclined to feed (and thus transmit BMYV) than aphids on the previously uninfested plants. The consequences for the control of sugar beet yellowing virus vectors are discussed.  相似文献

Sampling techniques for thrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) were compared in preflowering tomato plants at the Coastal Plain Experiment Station in Tifton, GA, in 2000 and 2003, to determine the most effective method of determining abundance of thrips on tomato foliage early in the growing season. Three relative sampling techniques, including a standard insect aspirator, a 946-ml beat cup, and an insect vacuum device, were compared for accuracy to an absolute method and to themselves for precision and efficiency of sampling thrips. Thrips counts of all relative sampling methods were highly correlated (R > 0.92) to the absolute method. The aspirator method was the most accurate compared with the absolute sample according to regression analysis in 2000. In 2003, all sampling methods were considered accurate according to Dunnett's test, but thrips numbers were lower and sample variation was greater than in 2000. In 2000, the beat cup method had the lowest relative variation (RV) or best precision, at 1 and 8 d after transplant (DAT). Only the beat cup method had RV values <25 for all sampling dates. In 2003, the beat cup method had the lowest RV value at 15 and 21 DAT. The beat cup method also was the most efficient method for all sample dates in both years. Frankliniella fusca (Pergande) was the most abundant thrips species on the foliage of preflowering tomato in both years of study at this location. Overall, the best thrips sampling technique tested was the beat cup method in terms of precision and sampling efficiency.  相似文献

The effect of Nilaparvata lugens (St?l) infestation duration and density on the host preference and performance of Anagrus nilaparvatae Pang et Wang, an egg parasitoid of rice planthoppers, was determined. The results showed that the parasitoid preferred N. lugens eggs on the plants infested with 10 gravid N. lugens females for 1 d to those plants infested with 10 gravid females for 2 or 3 d. It was also found to prefer N. lugens eggs on plants infested with 10 or 20 adult females after 24 h of infestation to those plants infested with 5 or 80 females. The parasitoid's offsprings had lower survival rates, fecundities, female ratios, indexes of capacity for population increase, and longer developmental durations on plants when they were infested with high N. lugens density (80 adult females per plant). However, the performance of the parasitoid on plants infested with low N. lugens density (5 female adults per plant) was similar to those on plants with intermediate N. lugens density (10 or 20 adult females per plant). Low preference of the parasitoid for N. lugens eggs on plants with heavy or light infestation levels may be correlated with low host suitability and detectability, respectively. The result implies an important role of herbivore-induced rice volatiles in the host preference of the parasitoid A. nilaparvatae, by which the parasitoid perceives the host and its suitability.  相似文献
