Populations of Iridaea splendens at Brockton Point, Stanley Park, Vancouver, Canada were observed to alternate in dominance between the gametophytic phase in summer and tetrasporophytic phase in winter. The mechanism regulating this alternation is not clear. Using a matrix projection model to simulate population growth, we show that this alternation is possible if there are differential survival and recruitment rates of the two phases in summer and winter. Sensitivity and elasticity analyses indicate the relative importance of perennation vs. recruitment. Recruitment from tetrasporophytes and from gametophytes both contribute about 25% to the population growth. Perennation among gametophytes is more important than among tetrasporophytes. The implication of this is that if this population is to be harvested, more tetrasporophytes can be harvested than gametophytes without resulting in the depletion of the resource. This is simulated in the matrix model by comparing the relative effects on population growth of increasing the mortality rate of the perennation phase of tetrasporophyte and gametophyte by 50 to 75%, and increasing recruitment rate in either phase, from summer to winter or from winter to summer.Dedicated to Dr T. In this study, we present basic population data of the red macroalga Asparagopsis taxiformis, widely recognized as invasive in the Mediterranean Sea. A 13‐month field study was carried out on a population located in southern Spain, addressing its phenology, population dynamics and demography. We further tested whether biomass variations were related to environmental variables at the study site. Gametophytes were present year‐round while tetrasporophytes were only found in spring and summer. Recruitment capacity and vegetative growth of the gametophytes are discussed as important modulators for the population structure and enhancers of its persistence. Thallus size‐time histograms revealed a high prevalence of small shoots that showed high mortality that was not related to self‐thinning. Biomass of A. taxiformis was higher from March to July. Vegetative growth was the main way the gametophyte population was maintained, although the presence of tetrasporophytes and fertile gametophytes in the field confirms that sexual reproduction also occurs. Its continuous and high recruitment, in terms of the number of smallest shoots, makes this southern population of A. taxiformis a source of future invasive populations due to the intensive maritime traffic in the region.  相似文献

Qualitative and quantitative differences in carrageenan composition of gametophytes and tetrasporophytes of Chondrus crispus were observed in this study. Carrageenans in gametophytes belong to the kappa family (κ-, ι-, ν- and μ-carrageenan). The dominant fractions were κ- and ι-carrageenan (more than 50% of the total carrageenans). In tetrasporophytes, the presence of λ-carrageenan was confirmed. Carrageenan content in gametophytes (37.4?±?1.68% DW) was higher than in tetrasporophytes (29.13?±?0.76% DW). Spatial and temporal variation in carrageenan content in both life cycle phases appears to be related mainly to seawater and air temperatures, insolation, water movement and desiccation. The highest values of carrageenan content were recorded in those localities where higher values of precipitation, wind speed or water movement occurred. A bimodal temporal pattern on carrageenan content was observed. Fronds showed a high carrageenan content in spring and autumn. During these seasons, the content was over 40% in gametophytes and 30% in the tetrasporophytes. In summer and winter, these values down in both life cycle phases below 30%. In general the highest carrageenan contents were related to highest seawater temperatures. On the contrary, high air temperature and high insolation appeared to be unfavourable for carrageenan production. GLM models were obtained to predict carrageenan production from natural C. crispus populations, along Galician coast.  相似文献

The effects of solar UV radiation on mycosporine‐like amino acids (MAAs), growth, photosynthetic pigments (Chl a, phycobiliproteins), soluble proteins (SP), and C and N content of Mazzaella laminarioides tetrasporophytes and gametophytes were investigated. Apical segments of tetrasporophytes and gametophytes were exposed to solar radiation under three treatments (PAR [P], PAR+UVA [PA], and PAR+UVA+UVB [PAB]) during 18 d in spring 2009, Punta Arenas, Chile. Samples were taken after 2, 6, 12, and 18 d of solar radiation exposure. Most of the parameters assessed on M. laminarioides were significantly influenced by the radiation treatment, and both gametophytes and tetrasporophytes seemed to respond differently when exposed to high UV radiation. The two main effects promoted by UV radiation were: (i) higher synthesis of MAAs in gametophytes than tetrasporophytes at 2 d, and (ii) a decrease in phycoerythrin, phycocyanin, and SPs, but an increase in MAA content in tetrasporophytes at 6 and 12 d of culture. Despite some changes that were observed in biochemical parameters in both tetrasporophytes and gametophytes of M. laminarioides when exposed to UVB radiation, these changes did not promote deleterious effects that might interfere with the growth in the long term (18 d). The tolerance and resistance of M. laminarioides to higher UV irradiance were expected, as this intertidal species is exposed to variation in solar radiation, especially during low tide.  相似文献

Chile is one of the top carrageenan producers worldwide, and Sarcopeltis (ex Gigartina) skottsbergii one of the topmost exploited carrageenophytes from the wild in the world. Total yield, gel strength and viscosity from two contrasting environments Calbuco and Ancud (Inner and Outer Sea, Chile) were estimated monthly in approximately 2 years for this species. While carrageenan yields did not show differences between localities, gametophytes in spring–summer had 15% higher, compared to tetrasporophytes. Sizes (frond surface) normally did not affect carrageenan yields. Gametophytes showed clear differences in gel strength between seasons, but not between localities, with maximum peaks during winter–spring months in Calbuco and autumn-winter months in Ancud. Seasonal variations in viscosity were also significant. While gametophyte viscosity did not exceed 120 cPs, tetrasporophytes reached 1400 cPs in Calbuco and 1000 cPs in Ancud. More remarkably, a positive correlation between viscosity and gel strength was found in S. skottsbergii gametophytes, which is significantly different between both localities. These results suggest that selective harvesting in spring–summer should be preferred to optimize cost–benefit of harvesting activities and subsequent carrageenan productivity.  相似文献

As judged by comparison with other molecular data sets, random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) data are robust in identifying large-scale biogeographic populations that range from hundreds to thousands of kilometers apart. As the geographical scale is shifted downward, however, RAPD data often fail. This is because RAPD data are inherently “noisy” as a result of technical artifacts and reproducibility problems associated with non-independence of bands, “missing” bands, and the presence of de novo bands, all of which contribute to scoring errors in the data set. To estimate the contribution of these error factors in algal phylogeographic studies, segregation of RAPD bands in tetrasphorophytic and gametophytic parents, their natural and synthetic offspring, and self-cycled tetrasporophytes were compared in Lophocladia trichoclados (Mertens in C. Agardh) Schmitz and to a limited extent in Digenea simplex (Wulfen) C. Agardh. Wide-ranging biogeographic populations of D. simplex were compared as were mixed populations of tetrasporophytes and gametophytes. Results show that nested priming can lead to some nonindependence of bands but that this probably does not significantly contribute to scoring error. Southern analysis using individual RAPD bands as probes revealed that up to 16% of visually nondetectable bands are actually present but that the random distribution of the error contributes uniformly across the data set. Non-parental (de novo in offspring) and parental (not present in offspring) bands may contribute substantially to the scoring error in tetrasporophytes, gametophytes, and self-cycled tetrasporophytes. The presence of tetrasporophytes and gametophytes in a sample is not important in large-scale phylogeographic studies but does affect within-clade variation at smaller scales. We conclude that the overall level of error remains roughly constant at probably between 5 and 10%, which is not a problem at large biogeographic scales where the phylogenetic signal is strong. Finally, some unexpectedly large abberations in RAPD banding patterns among life stages in L. trichoclados were observed that cannot be explained by methodological artifacts alone due to comparisons with synthetic offspring controls. The possibility that carpospore amplification may not always involve a simple mitotic process is discussed.  相似文献

The physiological performances of tetrasporophytes and gametophytes of Gelidium canariensis (Grunow) Seoane-Camba were compared to estimate whether the field predominance of tetrasporophytes is due to lower fitness of gametophytes. No significant differences between tetrasporophytes and gametophytes were detected for calorific content, protein and pigment concentrations, NADH-Diaphorase, alkaline phosphatase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activities and photosynthesis and respiration at 15, 20 and 25 °C, and pH 6.5, 8.2 and 9.2. The life history of the marine red alga Acrochaetium pectinatum (Kylin) Hamel was studied in unialgal culture using supplemented natural seawater media. The tetrasporophytes are larger than the gametophytes, have a compact filamentous basal system, and produce monosporangia and tetrasporangia. Mono-spores give rise to tetrasporophytes. Tetraspores develop into small gametophytes with unicellular bases. The gametophytes are heterothallic when small (usually less than 500 μ) but as some females become larger (2-3 mm) they produce spermatangia as well as carpogonia. Gametophytes may bear mono-sporangia in addition to carpogonia or spermatangia. These monospores give rise to gametophytes. Fertilization of the carpogonia has not been observed. The tetrasporophytes produce only monosporangia in day-lengths of 12-16 hr, but both tetrasporangia and monosporangia are formed in daylengths of 6–10 hr. Tetrasporangial production is reduced at 15 C compared with 10 C. Light intensity in the range of 5-200 ft-c (cool white fluorescent lighting) has no apparent influence on induction of tetrasporangia. Induction of tetrasporangia is not a photoperiodic response because their development is not inhibited by a brief light break in the middle of the dark period in short daylengths. Plastid morphology, origin, and frequency of sporangia and vegetative branching are variable during the ontogeny, and consequently are somewhat unreliable as taxonomic criteria. Differences in basal systems between gametophytes and tetrasporophytes also indicate that this feature, which is used to distinguish major subgeneric groupings in Acrochaetium, may not be as useful as previously thought.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of elevation, wave exposure, and year on the proportion of gametophytes and tetrasporophytes in populations of the intertidal red seaweed Mazzaella parksii (= M. cornucopiae, Gigartinaceae) from the Pacific coast of Canada. In July 2002, we determined the life-history phase of 864 frond samples from four populations from Barkley Sound, using the resorcinol-acetal test. For these populations, gametophytes were significantly more numerous than tetrasporophytes, and the proportion of gametophytes was significantly higher at higher elevations. The proportion of gametophytes varied directly (although less markedly) with the degree of wave exposure, but significance could not be assessed for this factor. All of these patterns were spatially consistent, as they held for two different rocky points with similar physical characteristics. One of these points had also been surveyed in 1994-1995, which allows us to conclude that the population-wise gametophyte predominance and the positive relationship between elevation and the proportion of gametophytes are stable features of this species in this area. However, the average proportion of gametophytes was similar between the studied levels of wave exposure in 1994–1995; such a difference revealed as non-significant when data were combined with those for 2002. This suggests that wave exposure is not important in determining the proportion of life-history phases for this species. Comparisons with other species are done in search of general patterns for the Gigartinaceae.  相似文献

Genetic variation in the synthesis of halogenated secondary metabolites in the Japanese marine red alga Laurencia nipponica Yamada (Rhodomelaceae, Ceramiales) has been investigated in laboratory crossing experiments and chemical analyses, F1 tetrasporophytes and F1 gametophytes resulting from crosses within chemical races produced major metabolites characteristic of these races. F1 tetrasporophytes derived from reciprocal interracial crosses produced: (i) both parental types of secondary metabolites; (ii) either of the parental types; or (iii) a further major compound in addition to both parental types or in addition to either of the parental types. The latter cases suggest that hybrid-specific products were formed by the combined enzymatic complements of the parents, as F1 gametophytes derived from these interracial F1 tetrasporophytes yielded one or other of their parental products in an approximate 1:1 ratio. The population structure was analyzed at localities in Hokkaido, where two of the chemical races occur sympatrically. At Usujiri (Minami-kayabe), where the prepacifenol race and the laureatin race were sym-patric, hybrid gametophytes (recombination type) were found in high frequency in addition to hybrid tetra sporophytes, which strongly suggests that a new, pre-pacifenol/laureatm race is beginning to be produced by natural hybridization and recombination. By contrast, at Oshoro Bay, where the laurencin race and the epi-lauraliene race grew together, the interracial hybrids were rare: only a few tetrasporophytes (probably F1 generation) were found, suggesting that racial integrity may be retained by habitat segregation and/or the absence of recombination-type gametophytes.  相似文献

We describe the abundance, including spatial and temporal variability, of phases of the isomorphic Chondrus verrucosus Mikami from Japan. Chondrus verrucosus occurred in a dense (~90% cover) and temporally stable bed on a small, isolated rocky outcrop (Oyakoiwa) in Shizuoka Prefecture. Small vegetative fronds were always much more abundant than large vegetative and fertile fronds over the spring to late summer periods in 1999 and 2000. Over the same period, fertile carposporophytic fronds were generally more abundant than fertile tetrasporophytic fronds, and fertile male fronds appeared infrequently at low densities. Using the resorcinol‐acetal test, we determined the proportion of gametophytes and tetrasporophytes in three populations of C. verrucosus: Oyakoiwa and Noroshi (Shizuoka) in the summers of 1999 and 2000 and Kamehana Point (Miyagi) in autumn 2000. All populations had a significantly higher proportion of gametophytes than tetrasporophytes in both years, although gametophytic proportions were lower at Noroshi (~70%) than at Oyakoiwa (~80%) and Kamehana Point (~97%). However, examination of all isolated individuals sampled on Noroshi showed equal proportions of each phase in 1999, but gametophyte dominance (74%) in 2000. Differences in dispersal and spore production between phases are discussed as mechanisms potentially contributing to variation in gametophyte dominance.  相似文献

The biomass variation and the reproduction of the natural Gracilaria gracilis bed in Bahía Bustamante (Patagonia, Argentina) were analyzed for 2 years, with the aim of determining the present situation of the population for an updated status overview; establishing the relevant features of the temporal variation in both biomass and reproductive states in relation to environmental factors, epiphytes and associated algae; and assessing carpospore availability for future spore-culture development. Field measurements and sampling were performed monthly between March 2006 and February 2008. In both years, G. gracilis biomass presented marked seasonal variations, with a minimum in winter and a maximum in late spring and in summer. During both years, coexistence of the three life-cycle phases was found, with dominance of tetrasporophytes. Two data sets from individuals originated from sexual reproduction (tetraspores and carpospores) and from asexual reproduction by thallus fragmentation were analyzed separately. In the fragmentation fraction, tetrasporophyte frequencies remained higher than those for gametophytes. However, in the spore-originated fraction, a generation ratio close to 0.5 was observed. Female gametophytes bearing cystocarps were always present, with a maximum in summer and autumn. Biological data were related to environmental factors by means of canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). The first year was characterized by higher biomass values of G. gracilis and Undaria pinnatifida, lower epiphytism, larger Gracilaria thalli and greater proportion of mature tetrasporophytes and gametophytes. The second year was characterized by a high proportion of Gracilaria vegetative thalli and high epiphyte density. The best time to obtain spores from cystocarpic thalli would be in summer and early autumn.  相似文献

In the fall, when 61% of the fronds of the Gelidium sesquipedale (Clem.) Born. et Thur. population located in Albufeira (southern Portugal) were reproductive, about 90% of these fronds were tetrasporophytes, whereas an equal percentage of female and male gametophytes was found (5%). The comparison of physiological performances of the reproductive phases (males, females and tetrasporophytes) did not reveal a physiological advantage of tetrasporic fronds. There were no significant differences either in the photosynthesis, nitrogen uptake, nitrate reductase activity, or biochemical composition of adult fronds. On the other hand, vegetative recruitment and spore production in the laboratory were significantly different. The re‐attachment to calcareous substrate and the subsequent rhizoidal growth were faster in tetrasporophytes. Particular levels of temperature, rather than irradiance, had an important effect on the phase differences in the spore release, attachment, and germination rates. Significant results were the higher release of carpospores at all irradiances at 17°C, and the higher attachment percentage of carpospores at 13°C versus tetraspores. Under higher temperatures (21°C), tetraspores showed higher attachment rates while carpospores germinated more. G. sesquipedale cystocarps released carpospores for 2 months, while tetrasporangia stopped shedding tetraspores after 1 month, resulting in a 3‐fold higher production of carpospores than tetraspores. Results showed that vegetative and spore recruitment may explain the low gametophyte–tetrasporophyte ratio of the studied population of G. sesquipedale as opposed to the physiological performance of phases.  相似文献

In order to better understand the alternation of generations that characterizes haploid–diploid life cycles, we assessed the existence of ecological differences between the two phases (haploid gametophyte and diploid tetrasporophyte) in Gracilaria chilensis, a rhodophyte with a typical Polysiphonia-type life cycle. We investigated the effect of light intensity and salinity on viability and growth of both phases at different ontogenetic stages: juveniles and adults. In our study, the survival of juvenile gametophytes (n) was higher than the survival of juvenile tetrasporophytes (2n) despite culture conditions; however, low salinity had greater effect on carpospores (2n) than on tetraspores (n). On the other hand, a complex interaction between salinity and light intensity within each life history phase generated observed differences between juvenile growth rates. Low light was shown to trigger early onset of alteration of the holdfast growing pattern. In addition, adult tetrasporophytes showed, despite the conditions, a faster vegetative growth than female and male gametophytes. These differences between phases could have led to the complete dominance of tetrasporophyte fragments of fronds observed in G. chilensis farms. We hypothesize that Chilean fishers could have unknowingly selected for tetrasporophyte thalli during domestication of the species, thus enhancing the natural trend of tetrasporophytes dominance already present in estuarine natural populations of free-floating plants.  相似文献

A male done of the red alga Gracilaria tikvahiae McLachlan spontaneously produced a bisexual frond which remained bisexual in subsequent subcultures. Both male and female components of bisexual fronds were functional; however, some unusual results were obtained in crosses. When bisexual fronds were crossed with a normal haploid male, the resulting carpospores all developed into diploid male gametophytes. When bisexual plants were self fertilized, all the carpospores yielded diploid bisexual gametophytes. Only when bisexual plants were crossed to normal haploid females, did carpospores develop into diploid tetrasporophytes as they normally do. The F1 gametophyte generation obtained from these tetrasporophytes, however, included not only females and males but also bisexual plants, in a 2:1:1 ratio. These results are consistent with the interpretation that bisexual plants have a recessive mutation of a gene other than the primary sex determining locus, and that this mutation is expressed only in male plants. It is suggested that the altered gene may ordinarily have a regulatory function in the maintenance of the dioecious condition.  相似文献

Theory predicts that the maintenance of haplodiplontic life cycles requires ecological differences between the haploid gametophytes and diploid sporophytes, yet evidence of such differences remain scarce. The haplodiplontic red seaweed Gracilaria vermiculophylla has invaded the temperate estuaries of the Northern Hemisphere, where it commonly modifies detrital and trophic pathways. In native populations, abundant hard substratum enables spore settlement, and gametophyte:tetrasporophyte ratios are ~40:60. In contrast, many non‐native populations persist in soft‐sediment habitats without abundant hard substratum, and can be 90%–100% tetrasporophytic. To test for ecologically relevant phenotypic differences, we measured thallus morphology, protein content, organic content, “debranching resistance” (i.e., tensile force required to remove a branch from its main axis node), and material properties between male gametophytes, female gametophytes, and tetrasporophytes from a single, nonnative site in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, USA in 2015 and 2016. Thallus length and surface area to volume ratio differed between years, but were not significantly different between ploidies. Tetrasporophytes had lower protein content than gametophytes, suggesting the latter may be more attractive to consumers. More force was required to pull a branch from the main axis of tetrasporophytes relative to gametophytes. A difference in debranching resistance may help to maintain tetrasporophyte thallus durability relative to gametophytes, providing a potential advantage in free‐floating populations. These data may shed light on the invasion ecology of an important ecosystem engineer, and may advance our understanding of life cycle evolution and the maintenance of life cycle diversity.  相似文献

Only two genera in the Rhodomelaceae share the morphological character of transverse division of periaxial cells into two or more tier cells in which the pit connection is retained between the lower cell and the axial cell: Bostrychia and Rhodolachne. One species, Rhodolachne radicosa Itono, has been reported from mangroves, a common habitat for Bostrychia. Many collections of an entity similar to Rhodolachne radicosa have been made from localities around the Indo‐Pacific. Culture observations show a Polysiphonia‐type sexual life history in Malaysia and New Caledonia isolates that produce self‐compatible bisexual gametophytes. The New Caledonia isolate also has unisexual gametophytes. An isolate from New South Wales (Australia) reproduces asexually through successive generations of tetrasporophytes. The Thailand isolate has successive generations of mixed‐phase tetrasporophytes. The tetrasporangial stichidia also bear male spermatangial sectors, but female structures are lacking. Western Australia and Madagascar isolates do not reproduce in culture. Molecular evidence, based on sequencing of the rbcL and the large subunit ribosomal RNA genes, shows that these isolates belong to the genus Bostrychia. Low molecular weight carbohydrate analysis reveals high levels of digeneaside in all isolates. The sugar hexitol sorbitol, an osmolyte characteristic of Bostrychia, occurs in all isolates, whereas the Madagascar and New Caledonia isolates have very low levels of dulcitol. Molecular, low molecular weight carbohydrate and morphological evidence show that Rhodolachne radicosa belongs within the genus Bostrychia. The brown algal order Tilopteridales contains three monospecific genera with reduced life histories, Which are assumed to have been derived form ancestors with oogamous reproduction and alternation of generations. The Newfoundland population of Haplospora globosa Kjellman still shows an alternation of gametophytes and sporophytes, but the chromosome Numbers remain equal because of parthenogenesis and apomeiosis, However, DNA fluorometry showed that the DNA level is twice as high in the Sporophytes as in the gametophytes, The DNA variation at constant chromosome numbers is presumably due to endomitosis combined with a law degree of polyteny. A genotypic variant of Haplospora is represented by the population at Helgoland (F.R.G.) where only sporophytes exist, Spores develop into sporophytes instead of gametophytes, and the plants have reduced chromosome number but the same DNA level as the Newfoundland sporophytes  相似文献

Several Florideae grown in natural seawater media under defined laboratory conditions have interesting and unusual life histories. Antithamnion occidentale males of one generation produced tetraspores that gave rise to nonsporangiate males. The functional females of A. pygmaeum developed spermatangia and tetrasporangia; the tetraspores formed new females. Antithamnion defectum tetrasporophytes of one generation bore spermatangia in addition to tetrasporangia; the tetraspores gave rise to typical gametophytes. Tetraspores from successive generations of Callitham-nion sp. developed into tetrasporophytes and males but no females were produced. Functional female gametophytes of Platythamnion sp. bore abortive tetrasporangia. Field-collected plants of two species of Fauchea produced tetraspores that yielded additional sporangiate plants: those of F. pygmaea being bispo-rangiate and tetrasporangiate, and those of F. lacini-ata being strictly tetrasporangiate. Male plants of Pleonosporium vancouverianum from a running seawater table bore spermatangia and polysporangia when collected. The same plants in unialgal culture produced only spermatangia.  相似文献

The red alga Chondracanthus chamissoi (Gigartinales) is endemic to the southern-central region of South America. In the Pacific Ocean, it is distributed from north-central Peru to Chiloe Island. This species is of economic importance because it is edible and used for carrageenan production. The tetrasporophyte phase was grown in the laboratory, obtaining male and female gametophytes that were incubated under different photoperiod, pH, salinity and temperature conditions. These gametophytes developed and generated reproductive structures that led to in vitro maturation. Subsequently, fertilisation occurred and formation of cystocarps was observed. Finally, carpospores were released and the formation of sporophytes completed the life history of this species under laboratory conditions. Reproductive phase growth rates were recorded for each of the different culture conditions used. Sporophytes reached the highest daily growth rate (22%), while gametophyte’s daily growth rate was slower (9%). This research confirms, in vitro, the assumption that C. chamissoi has a sexual triphasic life history Polysiphonia type with isomorphic gametophytes and tetrasporophytes.
