Abstract. 1. Plant material of Holcus lanatus L. removed from an artificially fertilized trial was used to rear leafhoppers of three feeding types: Dicrano-tropis hamata Boheman and Ebmana sulphurella Zetterstedt, (phloem feeders), Eucelis incisus Kirschbaum (xylem feeder) and Zyginidia scutellaris Herrich-Schaeffer (mesophyll feeder).
2. In the laboratory, leafhopper instar durations, adult consumption rate, oviposition rate, and nitrogen utilization efficiency were influenced by the quality of the food consumed. Adult longevity was unaffected by the level of food quality normally found in plants.
3. Z.scutellanis consumed mesophyll contents equivalent to 72% of its body weight each day but only digested about 30% of its intake. Eincicus had a low dry weight consumption rate (12% body weight/day) but digested its food more efficiently (60%) than the other feeding types. The two phloem feeders consumed mounts equivalent to 25% of their body weight each day and digested 40–50% of their intake.
4. Each species reached maximum nitrogen utilization efficiencies at different plant nitrogen levels. This suggests that leafhopper species may be associated with a particular nitrogen concentration in the grasses.  相似文献

.Studies of the biology of two species of Empria Lep., E. abdominalis F. and E. tridens Kon., reveal that E. abdominalis is a multivoltine species with thelytokous parthenogenesis and E. tridens is a univoltine species with arrhenotokous parthenogenesis.
E. abdominalis is associated with Anagallis and Lysimachia, and lays large conspicuous eggs in the under sides of the leaves. E. tridens feeds on Rubus spp., and inserts small inconspicuous eggs into stems, leaves, and bud scales of the host plant.
Larvae of both species are closely and evenly annulated. A typical abdominal segment has six annulets; in E. abdominalis the second and fourth annulets are setiferous, while in E. tridens the first, second, and fourth annulets are setiferous. Prolegs occur on segments 5–11 and 13 in both species and pseudocerci are absent. Larvae of E. abdominalis have the back and sides covered with a fine flaky or powdery substance which is absent in larvae of E. tridens. Females of E. abdominalis have six larval stages, in the last of which no feeding takes place. Males of E. tridens have five larval stages, in all of which feeding occurs.
In E. tridens hibernation and pupation take place within bark, dead wood, and pithy stems, while in E. abdominalis pupation takes place in the soil. Neither species constructs a cocoon.
The differences in biology and habits seem to justify the subdivision of the genus by Enslin into subgenera– Monostegia Costa, which includes E. abdominalis, and Triempria Enslin, which includes E. tridens.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Resource utilization of time (i.e. seasonal occurrence of adults) and oviposition sites (i.e. heights of the host plant above ground level) have been analysed in five species of leafhoppers commonly associated with the grass Holcus mollis.
2. The d/w method proposed by May & MacArthur (1972) has been used and when the values for the two resources are examined together it becomes apparent that much potential competition for oviposition sites is reduced by segregation in time. Moreover, potential competition for common resources is reduced by mobility and dispersal of some species.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The tropical forest grasshopper Microtylopteryx hebardi Rehn (Orthoptera, Acrididae, Ommatolampinae) oviposits inside leaves or stems of its host plants. This is the first known instance of oviposition inside living plant tissue (rather than in the ground, on top of leaves, or in detritus) for a tropical forest acridid.
2. In understorey secondary forest at La Selva, Costa Rica, M.hebardi females fed on fifteen species of host plants, but oviposited in only four of these.
3. In laboratory choice tests, females showed selectivity for oviposition host plants similar to that inferred from field observations.
4. Plant volume was a better predictor of the number of eggs laid per stem than variables that indicated leaf or stem characteristics of individual plants.
5. Unlike the ovipositor of acridids laying eggs in the ground, that of M.hebardi is equipped with toothed, sclerotized edges, probably used to bore into plant tissue.
6. Endophytic oviposition in M.hebardi may be related to finding host plants in a habitat that is complex, heterogeneous, and rich in plant species.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. At two sites in Devon S. argyreatum and S. variegatum only oviposited on water-splashed boulders. The oviposition season was from 15 March to 9 November at Steps Bridge and from 28 March to 7 December at Fingle Bridge. Flies laid eggs only during a brief period after sunset.
2. Flies infected with the fungus E. conica returned to the oviposition sites at the same times as healthy flies, but infected flies appeared to be unable to lay eggs.
3. At least 10.9% of healthy flies were found to have infective conidia of E. conica on their wings after laying eggs.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Both host plant nutrition and mortality from natural enemies have been predicted to significantly impact host plant selection and oviposition behaviour of phytophagous insects. It is unclear, however, if oviposition decisions maximise fitness.
2. This study examined whether the salt marsh planthopper Pissonotus quadripustulatus prefers higher quality host plants for oviposition, and if oviposition decisions are made so as to minimise mortality at the egg stage.
3. A controlled laboratory experiment and 4 years of field data were used to assess the rates of planthopper oviposition on higher quality 'green' and lower quality 'woody' stems of the host plant Borrichia frutescens . The numbers and percentages of healthy eggs and eggs that were killed by parasitoids or the host plant were recorded.
4. In all years, including the laboratory experiment, Pissonotus planthoppers laid more eggs on lower quality woody stems than on higher quality green stems. While host plant related egg mortality was higher in woody stems, the percentage of eggs parasitised was much greater in green stems. This resulted in a lower total mortality of eggs on woody stems.
5. The results of this study demonstrate that, although Pissonotus prefers lower quality host plants for oviposition, this actually increases fitness. These data seem to support the enemy free space hypothesis, and suggest that for phytophagous insects that experience the majority of mortality in the egg stage, oviposition choices may be made such that mortality is minimised.  相似文献

Abstract  1. Many butterfly populations persist in networks of naturally fragmented habitat patches. Movement and reproductive decisions made by adult females are critical to the persistence of these populations because colonisation of extinct habitat patches in the network requires emigration of fecund adult females from their natal meadow and their subsequent establishment in the extinct patch.
2. Movement and oviposition behaviours of mated Parnassius smintheus females released in suitable meadows (a good- and a poor-quality meadow) and an unsuitable meadow were compared, to determine whether adult females consider meadow suitability for their offspring despite frequent oviposition events off the larval host plant.
3. Bootstrap and correlated random walk analyses of female step lengths and turn angles demonstrated that females flew more randomly in the unsuitable meadow than in the suitable meadows. Although females tended to turn the sharpest angle between landing sites in the good-quality meadow, and fly the smallest distance between landing sites and displace the smallest distance from the release site in the suitable meadows, no significant differences were detected in turn angle, step length, and dispersal rates between suitable and unsuitable meadows.
4. Results from female flight observations and a caged oviposition study suggest that females lay significantly more eggs in suitable habitat than in unsuitable habitat despite not ovipositing on the host plant, and support the above findings.
5. Movement and oviposition behaviours of adult female P. smintheus promote their retention within meadows that can support their offspring.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The dry-season population of Zonocerus in southern Nigeria oviposits in dense aggregations under single or clumped woody plants or on the edge of tall continuous stands of vegetation. No egg pods were found oviposited singly.
2. The vegetation under which oviposition occurs is the most common available at the time of the year. There seems to be no selection of particular species of plants so long as they provide good low shade.
3. Oviposition can take place in a wide range of gravelly soils.
4. Topography is not important as long as the oviposition site is on high ground away from damp areas subject to flooding.
5. There was a mean of 618 pods per oviposition site from forty-one sites which were dug up, and there was a significant correlation between the area of a site and the number of pods.
6. There was a marked tendency for oviposition sites to be found close to cassava. At two localities of approximately 20 ha each 90% of the sites were found within 30 m of cassava.
7. It is suggested that permanent shade is the most important factor in the selection of a site and this is probably related to the survival of the eggs during their 6–7 months development.  相似文献

The relationship between second generation European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis Hübner) egg mass numbers and subsequent field corn damage, as measured by stalk cavity numbers, was studied in 79 fields in northeastern North Carolina over three years. A mean of 0.028 egg masses per plant (645 egg masses/23400 plants) was found over the course of the study. Significant differences in oviposition rate were detected between fields and years. Ca. 85% of egg masses were deposited in a five leaf zone surrounding the primary ear; of these, 89% were found on the lower four leaves in this zone. Egg masses appeared to be distributed randomly within fields but at low rates of incidence, and oviposition was relatively uniform between sampling areas within individual fields. Under moderate to high oviposition pressure (mean number of egg masses per plant over the duration of the oviposition period >ca. 0.02), eggs laid during the early phases of the oviposition period account for more subsequent stalk damage than eggs laid during the later phases of the oviposition period. Variations in second generation egg mass numbers accounted for ca. 70% of variation in stalk cavity numbers.  相似文献

The effect of simulated plant stress and parasitism by Aphelinus abdominalis (Dalman) on the mobility of four species of aphids was investigated. The aphids were placed on water stressed potted plants or on excised leaf segments on dry or moist filter-paper in Petri dishes. Winter wheat (Triticum aestivum) was infested with Metopolophium dirhodum (Walker), Sitobion avenae (F.) and Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) (segments only), aubergine (Solanum melongena) leaf segments with Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas). The aphids that moved off the plants were removed and their development stage determined at 24-h (drought-stressed plants) or 3-h (leaf segments) intervals. On intact plants, aphid larvae were reluctant to move, and only moved after moulting into adults. On cut leaves, young 1st and 2nd instar larvae were more reluctant to move than 3rd and 4th instar larvae and adults. The numbers moving were initially positively correlated with aphid population density, and in M. euphorbiae occurred mainly during the night. Depending on aphid species and parasitoid age, parasitism by A. abdominalis retarded or accelerated movement, but the differences between young and old larvae and adults persisted after parasitism. A. abdominalis lays male eggs in small hosts and female eggs in large hosts. Consequently, its sex ratio was affected by differential movement of the host aphids of the male and female parasitoids. Old larvae and adult aphids readily moved and carried off female parasitoids, while the small aphids were more likely to remain and give rise to male-biased sex ratios.  相似文献

A mirid,Eccritotarsus catarinensis(Carvalho), was studied as a potentially damaging natural enemy for water hyacinth, (Eichhornia crassipes(Mart.) Solms-Laub.), in South Africa. In the laboratory, eggs were inserted into the leaf tissue parallel to the leaf surface. The four nymphal instars fed gregariously with the adults mainly on the undersurface of the leaves, causing severe chlorosis at high population levels. The duration of immature stages (egg and nymphs) was approximately 23 days, while the adults survived for approximately 50 days. Favorable biological characteristics ofE. catarinensisincluded a high rate of increase, gregarious habits, long-lived and mobile adults, and several generations per year. Laboratory host range of the mirid was determined by adult choice trials on 67 plant species in 36 families and adult no-choice trials on five species in the Pontederiaceae. Feeding was recorded on all Pontederiaceae tested and oviposition on four of the five species. However, these plant species proved to be inferior hosts forE. catarinensisin comparison to water hyacinth, suggesting thatE. catarinensiswould be an acceptable natural enemy for water hyacinth in South Africa.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. The annual herb Arabidopsis thaliana is a prime model organism of plant molecular genetics, and is currently used to explore the molecular basis of resistance to herbivores. However, both the magnitude and the causes of variation in resistance among natural populations of A. thaliana are poorly known. The hypotheses (a) that resistance to a specialist herbivore, the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), is positively related to the density of leaf trichomes, and (b) that oviposition preference by female moths is positively correlated to larval performance on different populations and maternal lines of the host plant were examined.
2. Variation in leaf trichome density and resistance to P. xylostella within and among six natural populations of A. thaliana in Sweden was quantified . Resistance was quantified by examining the number of eggs laid on plants exposed to ovipositing female moths and by monitoring larval development on plants of different origin.
3. Trichome density varied significantly among populations; for 4-week-old plants (exposed to ovipositing moths), it also varied significantly among maternal families within populations. The rate of oviposition varied significantly both among populations and among families within populations. This variation could partly be explained by a negative relationship between trichome density and egg number, and a positive relationship between plant size and egg number. Time to pupation, pupal mass, and time to adult eclosion did not vary among populations or maternal lines of the host plant, and offspring performance was not related to P. xylostella oviposition preference . The results indicate that A. thaliana populations may respond to selection for increased resistance to P. xylostella , and suggest that trichome production contributes to resistance against this specialist herbivore.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Viable Mansonia egg masses occur in nature on both the upper and under surfaces of Pistia stratiotes (L.) leaves. Upper-surface masses were from Mansonia dyari Belkin, Heinemann & Page, but lower-surface oviposition was attributable to both M. dyari and M. titillans Walker.
2. Upper-surface egg masses were often out of water but were concentrated near a wet-dry stain line on the leaf. Lower-surface masses were laid underwater within 3 mm of the leaf edge, except for those oviposited through fenestrations caused by insect damage.
3. Oviposition varied seasonally and masses were most numerous between August and December when water lettuce plants were large and crowded. Egg masses were clumped on plants and leaves and concentrated on mature or mature-old leaves that subtended mean angles of 28–34° from the horizontal.
4. On intact plants in cages, M. dyari laid egg masses on both leaf surfaces in approximately the same proportions as observed in nature. On detached leaves floating flat on the water, M. dyari laid all masses on under surfaces.
5. At 20 and 25°C, egg development of M. dyari required 17.4 and 8.8 days (means), these being significantly longer than the mean times for M. titillans. Some larvae from eggs that hatched in the absence of water survived 72 h in the eggshell.
6. Upper-surface oviposition by M. dyari may be an adaptation to the crowded growth of water lettuce, the mosquito's favoured host plant, whose leaves are largely out of water. Leaf ageing and subsidence cause submergence of most upper-surface eggs by the time of hatching.  相似文献

Abstract 1. The herbaceous plant Solanum carolinense (L.) (Solanaceae) is host to a number of specialist insects, including the leaf-feeding beetles Epitrix fuscula (Crotch) and Leptinotarsa juncta (Germar) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). Potted individuals of S. carolinense were subjected to one of two treatments: exposure to herbivory by E. fuscula or exclusion of all herbivores. The effects of E. fuscula herbivory on larval performance and oviposition preference of L. juncta were investigated.
2. Although the masses of the L. juncta pupae did not differ between the two treatments, larvae feeding on damaged plants developed more slowly than those feeding on undamaged plants.
3. In both paired leaf choice trials and whole plant choice trials, larvae of L. juncta showed no preference for undamaged versus damaged hosts.
4. In a field transplant experiment, adult L. juncta females showed slight feeding preferences and strong oviposition preferences for undamaged plants versus plants that had been fed on by E. fuscula .
5. The results are discussed with reference to their implications for plant-mediated competition among herbivores and constraints on the evolution of plant resistance.  相似文献

Most butterflies that overwinter as diapausing eggs have evolved oviposition behaviours where egg placement is near or on perennating portions of their host plant. We describe an alternative strategy used by alpine populations of a Lycaenid butterfly species complex where eggs are not attached strongly to the leaf substrate and subsequently fall off the plant. Other populations occurring at lower elevations attach their eggs strongly to the plant. In the laboratory, we measured the amount of force required to detach eggs from the leaf substrate. Eggs of the non‐alpine populations required more than five times the force required to detach eggs of the alpine population. Field surveys of the host plant characteristics used by various populations suggest that easy detachment may be adaptive for alpine populations because, unlike the host plants used by other populations, nearly all of the preceding year's vegetative growth is blown away by strong winds during the winter months.  相似文献

It has been suggested that plant physical and chemical traits vary considerably in space and time. Hence, leaf‐mining insects may adjust their oviposition in response to leaf attributes representing high quality. Moreover, herbivorous insects can modify leaf morphology by acting as stressors, increasing, for example, fluctuating asymmetry (FA) levels. Here, we investigate oviposition preference in Agnippe sp.2, a leaf‐mining moth of Erythroxylum tortuosum, in relation to differences in leaf nutritional quality (i.e. levels of water, nitrogen and tannin content), leaf area (i.e. quantity of resource hypothesis) and FA. We also verify whether temporal variation in plant nutritional quality emerges as an alternative hypothesis to explain oviposition distribution in time, and whether this leaf miner is a stress‐causing agent, increasing FA during larval development. Mined leaves and leaves with and without eggs were periodically collected from plants located in a Cerrado fragment in Brazil. In the laboratory, leaf traits were assessed (using image analysis software) and quantified (biochemical analysis) according to the aims previously determined. Oviposition probability did not change in relation to variations in nitrogen, tannins and FA of leaves. However, leaf‐miner females preferred to oviposit on leaves having large areas and low water contents. It was also verified that new leaves of E. tortuosum, which carried most leaf‐miner eggs, presented significantly lower tannins and greater levels of nitrogen and water than old leaves. The oviposition choice exhibited by leaf miners was found to be non‐random because they appear to use resource quantity and water content as cues as where to lay their eggs. The temporal variation of plant nutritional quality is likely to influence the time of leaf‐miner oviposition; and leaf FA was not increased during larval feeding, suggesting that these herbivores do not cause variations in FA levels.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Secondary colonization of leaf shelters constructed by caterpillars has been reported from a number of systems. Both the mechanism (larval or adult movement vs. oviposition) and the cues used by arthropods in locating leaf shelters, however, have received little attention.
2. Artificial leaf shelters (i.e. leaf ties or pairs of leaves clipped together to form sandwiches) were constructed on understorey white oak ( Quercus alba L.) trees and the abundance and species composition of arthropods colonizing and ovipositing on leaf pairs was examined in three treatments: occupied leaf ties (containing a leaf-tying caterpillar), unoccupied leaf ties, and non-tied control leaves.
3. The density of arthropods present in the occupied and unoccupied leaf ties after two weeks was seven and four times greater respectively, than non-tied controls. The guild composition of these early colonists differed among treatments, with the highest densities of leaf chewers, scavengers, and predators in occupied ties and the lowest densities in non-tied controls.
4. The densities of all arthropods ovipositing on leaf pairs in the occupied and unoccupied leaf tie treatments were four and three times greater than non-tied controls. Leaf-chewing insects (including leaf-tiers and non-tying inquiline species) and scavengers showed strong oviposition preferences for tied leaves. However, most species of leaf-tying caterpillars and the psocids (Psocoptera) did not distinguish between occupied and unoccupied ties, suggesting that these groups do not use occupancy-related cues in selecting oviposition sites.  相似文献

The oviposition preferences of Leptidea morsei at the western border of its range (SE Slovenia) were studied with the aim of integrating this information into species habitat management recommendations. The characteristics of egg-laying habitat were examined at the landscape, patch, plant and leaf levels. Because sightings of adults in the field were infrequent, intensive searching for previously laid eggs on Lathyrus niger plants was chosen as the survey method. The main oviposition habitats of L. morsei in Slovenia were found to be the forest edges and light stands of thermophilous oak, oak-hornbeam and mesic beech forests (landscape level). The egg-laying sites were L. niger plants growing individually or in small stands, and oriented mostly towards W, SW, and S. The oviposition plants were between 33 and 120 cm high, with those growing in half to full shade preferred. Eggs were deposited singly, mainly on the underside of leaflets of terminal leaves, located mostly on the top quarter of plants irrespective of their height and growth form. The most important factors affecting egg-placement are sun exposure and the size of L. niger stands at ovipositing sites (patch level), leaf exposure on the plant in vertical and horizontal directions (plant level), leaf age and the leaf parts where the risk of leaf and egg desiccation is lower (leaf level). Management strategies for the main egg-laying habitats of the species are proposed.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Ceratobaeus spp. enter the nest of their host spider and oviposit into eggs through the thin silk eggsac.
2. Temperatures below 15° C limit oviposition by slowing parasites down.
3. Males emerge prior to females and mate with their sibs. Sex ratios of 6.6–6.0:1 in favour of females were observed in the field and laboratory for two species.
4. Even though females can oviposit almost immediately after emergence their full complement of eggs (= 65) is not reached until several days later.
5. Superparasitism is low and appears to occur from subsequent accidental ovipositions. No marking of the external surface of hosts was observed.
6. Parasites overwinter as adults under bark. They do not feed as adults nor do they reabsorb their eggs, but rather oviposit as soon as host eggs become available in spring.
7. Successful oviposition occurs in later stages of host eggs reared at 15° C and 20° C than it does at 25°C. Different rates of development between host and parasite is proposed as an explanation for this phenomenon.
8. The species studied show varying degrees of specificity but each has a dominant host. Location of hosts involves cues from the habitat (bark), silk nests of spiders, and some factor associated with host eggs.  相似文献
