 The physiological effects of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) on Saccharomyces cerevisiae CBS 8066 in the presence and absence of furfural were studied. Experiments were carried out by pulse addition of HMF (2–4 g/l) as well as HMF (2 g/l) together with furfural (2 g/l) to batch cultivations of S. cerevisiae. Synthetic medium with glucose (50 g/l) as carbon and energy source was used. Addition of 4 g/l of HMF caused a decrease (approx. 32%) in the carbon dioxide evolution rate. Furthermore, the HMF was found to be taken up and converted by the yeast with a specific uptake rate of 0.14 (±0.03) g/g · h during both aerobic and anaerobic conditions, and the main conversion product was found to be 5-hydroxymethylfurfuryl alcohol. A previously unreported compound was found and characterized by mass spectrometry. It is suggested that the compound is formed from pyruvate and HMF in a reaction possibly catalysed by pyruvate decarboxylase. When HMF was added together with furfural, very little conversion of HMF took place until all of the furfural had been converted. Furthermore, the conversion rates of both furfural and HMF were lower than when added separately and growth was completely inhibited as long as both furfural and HMF were present in the medium. Deuterium-labeled water was used to measure changes in the proximate body composition during the lactation period and after weaning in southern elephant seal pups at King George Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. During the lactation period (23.0 ± 1.4 days) pups gained a mean of 4.9 ± 0.5 kg/day (n=7). Of the total mass gain (112 ± 8 kg), 38% was water, 48% was fat, and 11% was protein. This represented an increase in total body gross energy of 2437 ± 145 MJ. The proportion of body mass represented by fat was less than 2% at birth, increasing to 35 ± 2% at weaning. We followed the pups during a mean period of 36 ± 3 days after weaning. During this period, pups had a mean loss of 1.21 ± 0.10 kg/day (n=7) comprising 39% water, 48% fat, and 12% protein. The energy cost over this period was 952 ± 168 MJ, which represented, on average, 39% of the total energy gained during the suckling period. Accepted: 3 January 2000  相似文献

Using proembryonic masses (PEMs) of Digitalis lanata Erh., it was demonstrated that cold, hormonal or osmotic stress, which increased freezing tolerance during cryopreservation, induced an increasing level of two peptidyl-prolyl-cis/trans-isomerases (PPIases). The difference in pI (9.2 ± 0.2 and 9.5 ± 0.2, ±SD; n = 3) allowed the separation of the two enzymes by free-flow isoelectrophoresis. Both were inhibited by cyclosporin A and thus belong to the cyclophilin family of PPIases. The enzymes differed slightly in their substrate specificity and their relative molecular masses of 18038 ± 4 Da (D. lanataCyp18.0) and 18132 ± 3 Da (D. lanataCyp18.1). Both cyclophilins were blocked N-terminally. Partial internal amino acid sequences from the two cyclophilins, with a length of 34 amino acids, displayed 82% sequence identity to each other. Pretreatment of PEMs with abscisic acid, sorbitol or a combination of both substances led to a 270 ± 30% elevation of the total cytosolic cyclophilin concentration determined with a cyclophylin affinity sensor. During the first 4 d of pretreatment, the total PPIase activity was enhanced up to 230 ± SD% compared with the control culture. The lag phase between maximal PPIase concentration after 4 d of pretreatment and maximal effect of freezing tolerance after 10 d of pretreatment indicated that increasing levels of cytosolic PPIases may be necessary to overcome the stress induced by hormones and osmotica during pretreatment but not to protect against freezing/thawing stress. Growth rates of mammalian young are closely linked to the ability of the mother to provide nutrients; thus, milk composition and yield provide a direct measure of maternal investment during lactation in many mammals. We studied changes in milk composition and output throughout lactation in a free-ranging population of the omnivorous bat, Phyllostomus hastatus. Fat and dry matter of milk increased from 9 to 21% and from 21 to 35% of wet mass, respectively, throughout lactation. Energy increased from 6 to 9 kJ · g−1 wet mass, primarily due to the increase in fat concentration. Total sugar levels decreased slightly but non-significantly. Mean sugar level was 4.0% of wet mass. Protein concentration increased from 6 to 11% of wet mass at peak lactation and then decreased as pups approached weaning age. Total milk energy output until pups began to forage was 3609 kJ. Milk levels of Mg, Fe, Ca, K, and Na averaged 0.55 ± 0.26, 0.23 ± 0.2, 8.75 ± 4.17, 5.42 ± 2.11, and 9.87 ± 4.3 mg · g−1 dry matter, respectively. Of the minerals studied, calcium appears to be most limiting in this species. The high degree of variability in foraging time, milk composition and milk yield between individuals at the same stage of lactation could potentially yield high variance in reproductive success among females of this polygynous species. In this study we measured growth and milk intake and calculated energy intake and its allocation into metabolism and stored tissue for hooded seal (Cystophora cristata) pups. In addition, we measured mass loss, change in body composition and metabolic rate during the first days of the postweaning fast. The mean body mass of the hooded seal pups (n = 5) at the start of the experiments, when they were new-born, was 24.3 ± 1.3 kg (SD). They gained an average of 5.9 ± 1.1. kg · day−1 of which 19% was water, 76% fat and 5% protein. This corresponds to an average daily energy deposition of 179.8 ± 16.0 MJ. The pups were weaned at an average body mass of 42.5 ± 1.0 kg 3.1 days after the experiment was initiated. During the first days of the postweaning fast the pups lost an average of 1.3 ± 0.5␣kg of body mass daily, of which 56% was water, 16% fat and 28% protein. During the nursing period the average daily water influx for the pups was 124.6 ± 25.8 ml · kg−1. The average CO2 production during this period was 1.10 ± 0.20 ml · g−1 · h−1, which corresponds to a field metabolic rate of 714 ± 130 kJ ·  kg−1 · day−1, or 5.8 ± 1.1 times the predicted basal metabolic rate according to Kleiber (1975). During the postweaning fast the average daily water influx was reduced to 16.1 ± 6.6 ml · kg−1. The average CO2 production in␣this period was 0.58 ± 0.17 ml · g−1 · h−1 which corresponds to a field metabolic rate of 375 ± 108 kJ · kg−1 · day−1 or 3.2 ± 0.9 times the predicted basal metabolic rate. Average values for milk composition were 33.5% water, 58.6% fat and 6.2% protein. The pups drank an average of 10.4 ± 1.8␣kg of milk daily, which represents an energy intake of 248.9 ± 39.1 MJ · day−1. The pups were able to store 73.2 ± 7.7% of this energy as body tissue. Dietary cholesterol can affect both body lipid composition and steroid hormone concentration. We investigated whether a diet rich in cholesterol influences torpor patterns of hibernating chipmunks (Tamias amoenus) and, if so, whether these changes are better explained by diet-induced changes in body lipid composition or the concentration of testosterone, which at high levels inhibits torpor. Two groups of chipmunks were maintained either on a cholesterol diet (rodent chow containing 10% cholesterol) or a control diet (rodent chow) during pre-hibernation fattening and throughout the hibernation season. Torpid chipmunks on the cholesterol diet had significantly lower minimum body temperatures (−0.2 ± 0.2 vs +0.6 ± 0.2 °C), lower metabolic rates (0.029 ± 0.002 ml O2 g−1h−1 vs 0.035 ± 0.001 ml O2 g−1h−1), and longer torpor bouts at −1 °C (6.8 ± 0.5 vs 4.1 ± 1.0 days) than chipmunks on the control diet. Dietary cholesterol resulted in a significant increase in blood plasma cholesterol (sevenfold), liver cholesterol content (6.9-fold) and liver triglyceride content (3.5-fold) in comparison to controls. In contrast, dietary cholesterol had no detectable effect on the concentration of plasma testosterone, which was very low in both groups. Since torpor was deeper and longer in animals on the cholesterol diet our study suggests that torpor patterns of chipmunks were either directly affected by the dietary cholesterol or via changes in body lipid composition. The effect of stress pretreatment on survival of probiotic Lactobacillus acidophilus La-5, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, and Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3 cultures was investigated in the single bioreactor gastrointestinal tract simulator (GITS). The cultures were pregrown in pH-auxostat, subjected to temperature, acid, or bile stress treatment, fast frozen in liquid nitrogen (LN2), and tested for survival in GITS. After LN2 freezing the colony forming ability of L. rhamnosus GG and L. fermentum ME-3 nonstressed and stressed cells was well retained (average survival of 75.4 ± 18.3% and 88.0 ± 7.2%, respectively). L. acidophilus La-5 strain showed good survival of auxostat nonstressed cells after fast freezing (94.2 ± 15.0), however the survival of stress pretreated cells was considerably lower (30.8 ± 8.5%). All LN2 frozen auxostat cultures survived well in the acid phase of the GIT simulation (survival 81 ± 21%); however, after the bile phase, the colony formation ability of L. acidophilus La-5, L. rhamnosus GG, and L. fermentum ME-3 decreased by approximately 1.4 ± 0.2, 3.8 ± 0.3, and 3.5 ± 1.2 logarithmic units, respectively. No statistically relevant positive effect of stress pretreatments on survival of LN2 frozen L. acidophilus La-5, L. rhamnosus GG, and L. fermentum ME-3 in GITS was observed.  相似文献

We investigated the abundance and activity of SAR11 on a monthly time scale between January 2008 and October 2008 in the oligotrophic NW Mediterranean Sea. Applying MICRO-CARD-FISH, we observed that SAR11 had a large contribution to bulk abundance (37 ± 6% of DAPI-stained cells) and to bulk bacterial heterotrophic production (BHP), as estimated from leucine incorporation (55 ± 15% of DAPI-cells assimilating leucine) in surface waters (5 m) throughout the study period. SAR11 contributed also substantially to the assimilation of glucose, ATP, and a combination of amino acids (44 ± 17%, 37 ± 14%, and 43 ± 12% of DAPI cells assimilating these compounds, respectively), organic compounds that provide either single or combined sources of C, P, and N. Temporal changes in the abundance of SAR11 cells that assimilated leucine, glucose, amino acids, and ATP revealed a pattern consistent with that of substrate-active DAPI cells, suggesting that the activity of SAR11 can explain to a large extent the variability in total cells contributing to the utilization of these compounds. Short-term nutrient enrichment experiments performed on each sampling date revealed a strong co-limitation of at least two of the three elements analyzed (C, N, P), in particular, during summer and early autumn. The in situ abundance of SAR11 cells assimilating leucine appeared to increase with P limitation as determined in the nutrient enrichment experiments (r = 0.81, p = 0.015). Our results demonstrate that SAR11 is an important component of the active bacterial community in the NW Mediterranean Sea. Our observations further indicate that the activity of the bulk bacterial community is linked to the activity of SAR11, possibly due to its adaptation to nutrient limitation.  相似文献

Summary. Taurine as well as tauret (retinyliden taurine) levels were measured in locust Locusta migratoria compound eyes. HPLC measurements revealed relatively low taurine levels (1.9 ± 0.16 mM) in dark-adapted eyes. Glutamate, aspartate and glycine levels were 2.0 ± 0.2, 2.7 ± 0.4 and 3.0 ± 0.37 mM, respectively, while GABA was present only in trace amounts. After about 4 h of light adaptation at 1500–2000 lx, amino acid levels in the compound eye were as follows: taurine, 1.8 ± 0.17 mM; glutamate, no change at 2.1 ± 0.2 mM; aspartate sharply increased to 4.7 ± 0.7 mM; glycine slightly decreased to 2.8 ± 0.3 mM; and GABA trace levels. In the compound eye of locust Locusta migratoria, the existence of endogenous tauret in micro-molar range was established. In the dark, levels were several times higher compared with compound eye after light adaptation 1500 lx for 3 h, as estimated by TLC in combination with spectral measurements. Existence of tauret in compound eye is of special interest because in the compound eye, rhodopsin regeneration is based on photoregeneration.  相似文献

The present study was undertaken to explore the effect of administration of high doses of sodium selenite on the expression of Bcl-2 in patients with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL). Fifty patients with newly diagnosed NHL were randomly divided into two groups. Group A-I received standard chemotherapy whereas group A-II received adjuvant sodium selenite 0.2 mg kg−1 day−1 for 30 days in addition to chemotherapy. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to assess Bcl-2 at the time of diagnosis and after therapy in the two groups. Sodium selenite administration resulted in significant decline of Bcl-2 level after therapy in group A-II (8.6 ± 6.9 ng/ml vs 3 6.9 ± 7.9 ng/ml, P < 0.05). Also, complete response reached 60% in group A-II compared to 40% in group A-I. Significant increase in CD4/CD8 ratio was noticed in group A-II compared to group A-I after therapy (1.45 ± 0.36 vs 1.10 ± 0.28 p 0.04). Overall survival time in months was significantly longer in complete remission patients in group A-II (21.87 ± 1.41) compared to group A-I (19.70 ± 1.95) (p = 0.01). It is concluded that sodium selenite administration at the dosage and duration chosen acts as a downregulator of Bcl-2 and improves clinical outcome.  相似文献

The effect of hypothyroidism, induced by 6-n-propyl-2-thiouracil (PTU) administration to rats, on the retinoylation reaction and oxidative status was investigated in rat-testes mitochondria. In hypothyroid mitochondria, when compared to euthyroid controls, we found a noticeable increase in the amount of all-trans-retinoic acid (atRA) bound to mitochondrial proteins by an acylation process (34.2 ± 1.9 pmoles atRA/mg protein/360 min and 22.2 ± 1.7 pmoles atRA/mg protein/360 min, respectively). This increase, which was time- and temperature-dependent, was accompanied by a strong reduction in the cardiolipin (CL) amount in the mitochondrial membranes of hypothyroid (2.6 ± 0.2%) as compared to euthyroid rats (4.5 ± 0.5%) Conversely, a decreased retinoylation reaction was observed when CL liposomes were added to mitochondria or mitoplasts from both euthyroid and hypothyroid rats, thus confirming a role of CL in the retinoylation process. In mitochondria from the latter animals an increase of the level of oxidized CL occurred. The ATP level, which was reduced in hypothyroid mitochondria (27.3 ± 4.1 pmoles ATP/mg protein versus 67.1 ± 8.3 pmoles ATP/mg protein of euthyroid animals), was surprisingly increased in mitochondria by the retinoylation reaction in the presence of 100 nM atRA (481.5 ± 19.3 pmoles ATP/mg protein of hypothyroid animals versus 84.7 ± 7.7 pmoles ATP/mg protein of euthyroid animals). Overall, in hypothyroid rat-testes mitochondria the increase in retinoylation activity correlates with a significant depletion of the CL level, due to a peroxidation of this lipid. This study was designed to investigate whether a non-protein nanostructured lipid carrier (NLC) resembling high-density lipoprotein (HDL) could deliver a hydrophobic anti-atherogenic drug, lovastatin, to foam cells. Lovastatin-loaded NLC (LT-NLC) was prepared by a nanoprecipitation/solvent diffusion method. The LT-NLC-apoprotein (LT-NLC-apo) was prepared by incubating LT-NLC with native HDL. The physicochemical parameters of LT-NLC were characterized in terms of particle size, zeta potential, morphology, entrapment efficiency, and crystallization behavior. Targeting behavior and mechanism were demonstrated by the incubation of LT-NLC-apo with a RAW 264.7 macrophage-derived foam cell model in the presence or absence of very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) and lipase. The results showed that LT-NLC was solid spherical or oval in shape with an average diameter of 13.8 ± 2.2 nm, zeta potential of −29.3 ± 0.2 mV and entrapment efficiency of 96.2 ± 1.3%. Phagocytosis studies showed that uptake of LT-NLC-apo by macrophages was significantly lower than LT-NLC (p < 0.01), suggesting that LT-NLC-apo could possibly escape recognition from macrophages in vivo. The uptake was increased twofold when LT-NLC-apo was incubated with transfected foam cells containing VLDL and lipase. These results indicated that non-protein NLC resembling HDL could be a useful tool to deliver lipophilic anti-atherogenic drugs to foam cells, and that uptake could be enhanced by the VLDL receptor pathway.  相似文献

We studied the effect of “chemical” (induced by the action of sodium thiosulfate, STS) hypoxia on the potassium conductance of the membrane of pheochromocytoma cells. Application of 1 to 10 mM STS decreased in a dose-dependent manner the amplitude of integral potassium current without changes in the voltage dependence of its activation. The concentration dependence of the action of STS on the amplitude of potassium current was estimated using the Boltzmann equation. The value of concentration for 50% inhibition was 2.7 ± 0.2 mM, while the slope coefficient was 0.9 ± 0.2 mM−1. In the presence of 10 mM STS, the decrease in the amplitude of potassium current reached, on average, 55%. Therefore, “chemical” hypoxia influences rather significantly the potassium conductance of the membrane of pheochromocytoma PC12 cells.  相似文献

Microbial community structure in the subtropical north-east Atlantic Ocean was compared between 2 years and variation attributed to environmental variables. Surface seawater communities were analysed by flow cytometry and fluorescence in situ hybridisation. Probes specific to Alphaproteobacteria, Cyanobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria and Bacteroidetes identified 67–100% of cells. Due to natural variation in the study region due to the occurrence of major currents and islands, data could not be pooled but were instead divided between distinct water masses. Community structure did not differ greatly around the Cape Verde Islands between sampling periods but varied substantially in the open ocean, suggesting different environmental perturbations favour specific bacterial groups. Wind speed varied significantly between years, with moderate to strong breeze in winter 2008 and gales in winter 2006 (8.9 ± 0.2 ms−1 and 16.0 ± 0.4 ms−1, respectively). Enhanced wind-driven turbulence was associated with domination by the SAR11 clade of Alphaproteobacteria, which were present at 2.4-fold in the abundance of Prochlorococcus (41.8 ± 1.6% cells, compared to 17.7 ± 7.1%). Conversely, the calmer conditions of 2008 seemed to favour Prochlorococcus (40.0 ± 1.2% cells). Prochlorococcus high-light adapted clade HLI were only numerous during wind-driven turbulence, whereas oligotrophic-adapted clade HLII dominated under calm conditions. Bacteroidetes were most prominent in turbulent conditions (9.5 ± 1.3% cells as opposed to 4.7 ± 0.3%), as were Synechococcus. In 2008, a considerable dust deposition event occurred in the region, which may have led to the substantial Gammaproteobacteria population (22.5 ± 4.0% cells compared to 4.6 ± 0.6% in 2006). Wind-driven turbulence may have a significant impact on microbial community structure in the surface ocean. Therefore, community change following dust storm events may be linked to associated wind in addition to dust-derived nutrients.  相似文献

Sixty-three patients with endemic fluorosis (36 males/27 females; mean age 33.9 ± 8.6 years) and 45 age-, sex-, and body mass index-matched healthy controls (30 males/15 females; mean age 32.7 ± 8.8 years) were included in this study. Aortic stiffness indices, aortic strain (AS), aortic distensibility (AD), and aortic strain index (ASI) were calculated from the aortic diameters measured by echocardiography and blood pressure obtained by sphygmomanometry. The urine fluoride levels of fluorosis patients were significantly higher than control subjects as expected (1.9 ± 0.1 mg/l vs. 0.4 ± 0.1 mg/l, respectively; P < 0.001). AS and AD were significantly lower in fluorosis patients than in the controls (for AS 5.3 ± 3.6 vs. 8.0 ± 3.4%; P < 0.001 and for AD 0.2 ± 0.1 vs. 0.3 ± 0.1 cm2 dyn−1 10−3; P < 0.001, respectively). In contrast, signicantly higher ASI was observed in fluorosis patients than in the controls (3.4 ± 0.6 vs. 3.0 ± 0.4; P < 0.001, respectively). The results of our study demonstrate that elastic properties of ascending aorta are impaired in patients with endemic fluorosis.  相似文献

Zinc (Zn) deficiency and obesity can be observed together in some developing countries. Zn deficiency may enhance fat deposition and decrease lean mass accrual, which in turn, appears to influence physical activity (PA), although this has not yet been evaluated in obese children. The objective of the study was to find out the association between measurements of plasma Zn and serum leptin, body composition, and PA in Chilean obese preschool children. Seventy-two 18- to 36-month-old obese children [weight-for-length/height z score (WHZ) > 2.0 SD], belonging to low socioeconomic communities, participated in the study. Plasma Zn, serum leptin, weight, waist circumference, height, total body water (TBW) assessed by deuterium isotopic dilution technique and daily activity, measured by registering 48 h with an accelerometer, were evaluated. We found 82% of children with WHZ > 3 SD. The geometric mean Zn intake was 6.2 ± 2.5 mg/day. The mean plasma Zn was 91.8 ± 11.4 μg/dL, with 10% of the children having levels <80 μg/dL. No correlation was found between plasma Zn concentrations and either weight, WHZ, or waist circumference. Serum leptin was lower in males than in females (2.9 ± 2.8 vs 6.8 ± 5.0 ng/mL, respectively; p < 0.001). TBW was different between males and females (56.2 ± 5.4 vs 52.8 ± 4.3% body weight, respectively; p = 0.004), but no significant association was found between TBW and plasma Zn. Moderate + intense PA, (as percentage of wake time), was greater in males than in females (6.3 ± 3.1% vs 3.4 ± 2.3%, respectively; p < 0.001), but it was not significantly correlated to plasma Zn. In conclusion, plasma Zn was not associated with body composition as assessed by TBW, serum leptin, or with the magnitude of physical activity in Chilean overweight preschool children.  相似文献

Activities involved in receiving or working (e.g., sorting, dehorning, castration, weighing, implanting, etc.) of feedlot cattle cause an increase in body temperature. During hot weather the increased body temperature may disrupt normal behaviors including eating, which can be especially detrimental to the well-being and performance of the animals. Sprinkle cooling of animals has been successfully employed within the pen; however, added moisture to the pens’ surface increases odor generation from the pen. A study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of a single instance of wetting an animal within the working facility instead of in the pen, which could potentially provide extra evaporative cooling to offset the added heat produced by activity. Sixty-four cross-bred heifers were assigned to one of eight pens on the basis of weight. On four separate occasions during hot conditions (average temperature 28.2 ± 1.9°C, 29.1 ± 2.0°C, 28.9 ± 3.0°C, and 26.8 ± 1.6°C; with the temperature ranging from 22.6 to 32.5°C during the trials), the heifers were moved from their pens to and from the working facility (a building with a scale and squeeze chute located 160–200 m away). While in the squeeze chute, four of the pens of heifers were sprinkle cooled and the remaining four pens were worked as normal. The heifers that were treated had a body temperature that peaked sooner (31.9 ± 0.63 min compared to 37.6 ± 0.62) with a lower peak body temperature (39.55 ± 0.03°C compared to 39.74 ± 0.03°C), and recovered sooner (70.5 ± 2.4 min compared to 83.2 ± 2.4 min). The treated animals also had a lower panting score, a visual assessment of level of cattle heat stress (1.1 ± 0.2 compared to 1.16 ± 0.2). The behavior measurements that were taken did not indicate a change in behavior. It was concluded that while a single instance of wetting an animal within the working facility did not completely offset the increase in body temperature, it was beneficial to the animals without needing to add water to the pen surface, thus reducing the potential for odor generation.  相似文献

An optic fiber (? 0.5 mm) was utilized for the study of Achilles tendon forces (ATF) in eight volunteers who walked over a 10 m force platform at three speeds (1.1 ± 0.1 m × s−1, 1.5 ± 0.1 m × s−1 and 1.8 ± 0.2 m × s−1). The presented ATF-time curves showed great intersubject variation in magnitudes of the sudden release of force after initial contact and in the peak ATF's (1430 ± 500 N). This intersubject variation in the peak force decreased only by 4% when cross-sectional area of the tendon was considered. Measured ground reaction forces and plantar pressures confirmed that the subjects walked quite normally during recordings. The peak ATF was found to be rather insensitive to speed in contrast to the rate of ATF development which increased 32% ( p < 0.5) from slow to fast walking speed. We characterized the effect of ten days of training on lipid metabolism in 6 [age 37.2 (2.3) years] sedentary, obese [BMI 34.4 (3.0) kg · m−2] males with normal glucose tolerance. An oral glucose tolerance test was performed prior to and at the end of the 10 d of training period. The duration of each daily exercise session was 40 min at an intensity equivalent to ˜75% of the age predicted maximum heart rate. Blood measurements were performed after an overnight fast, before and at the end of the 10 d period. Plasma triacylglycerol was significantly (p < 0.05) reduced following exercise training (2.15 ± 0.29 vs. 1.55 ± 0.28 mmol · l−1). Very low density lipoprotein-triacylglycerol was also significantly (p < 0.05) reduced (1.82 ± 0.3 vs. 1.29 ± 0.29 mmol · l−1). No significant changes in high density lipoprotein-cholesterol were observed as a result of training. Following training fasting plasma glucose and fasting plasma insulin were significantly reduced [Glucose: 5.9 (0.2) mmol · l−1 vs. 5.3 (0.22) mmol · l−1 (p < 0.05); Insulin 264.3 (53.8) ρ · mol · l−1 vs. 200.9 (30.1) ρ · mol · l−1, p = 0.05]. The total area under the glucose curve during the OGTT decreased significantly (p < 0.05). These preliminary data suggest that short-term exercise, without concomitant loss of body mass, induces favorable changes in plasma triacylglycerol, and very low density lipoprotein-triacylglycerol and glucose tolerance but has no effect on high density lipoproteincholesterol. Drinking in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) juveniles was investigated in fresh water and following transfer to sea water. There was a significant effect of fish size on drinking, and smolts (20–30 g) imbibed about ten times less water than alevins of 0.2–0.3 g. Freshwater smolts drank at a rate of 0.15 ± 0.03 ml · kg−1 · h−1 and administration of doses of 10 or 20 mg · kg−1 of papaverine (stimulator of the renin- angiotensin system RAS) or [Asn1, Val5]-Angiotensin II (0.4 μmol · kg−1) resulted in significant increases in drinking, while administration of the angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor, enalapril (50 mg · kg−1) had no effect on drinking. Transfer of Atlantic salmon smolts to 1/3, 2/3 and full strength sea water resulted in significant increases in drinking to 1.06 ± 0.12, 1.24 ± 0.0.16 and 3.89 ± 0.28 ml · kg−1 · h−1, respectively. In sea water, stimulation of the endogenous RAS by administration of papaverine (20 mg · kg−1) resulted in a 20% increase in drinking, while administration of enalapril to doses of 50 and 200 mg · kg−1 lowered drinking to 1.99 ± 0.48 and 0.32 ± 0.06 ml · kg−1 · h−1, respectively. All treatments were without effect on blood plasma levels of Na+ and Cl in fresh water, while in sea water smolts both stimulation and inhibition of drinking resulted in hemoconcentration of Na+ and Cl.
