Summary Despite its apparent costs, nest relocation is a common phenomenon among ants. Polyrhachis ammon, a common ant in open habitats of eastern Australia, exhibits a high rate of colony emigration to new nest sites. We conducted a field survey and shading experiments in different seasons and years to determine which factors affect colony emigration in this species. We also compared morphological features characterising workers involved in adult transport to determine if workers performing different tasks belong-ed to discernible temporal castes. Nests that were abandon-ed after four weeks were smaller, although distance from a food source and low-level disturbance did not alter re-location rates. The effects of shading and nest temperature on nest survival varied between seasons, as did rates of nest relocation. Transporter workers could not be distinguished from foragers, but had greater mandibular wear and smaller dry mass than transportees. Our results suggest that cues promoting nest relocation in P. ammon may be the result of a combination of factors with varying temporal importance.  相似文献

Ant colonies emigrate frequently from one nest site to another. Emigrations, however, are dangerous, particularly for colonieswith a single queen. The queen is a "vital organ" of the colony,and emigrations expose her to grave peril. The optimal strategyfor a monogynous ant colony, therefore, should be that thequeen moves during the middle of the emigration so that sheis transferred swiftly from the protection of half of the colony in the old nest to the protection of the other half colony inthe new nest. In the ant Leptothorax albipennis, the queenis carried during colony emigration. We tested the null hypothesisthat the queen has a random position in the sequence of transportevents during an emigration. The result of 32 emigrations demonstrated,for the first time, that the transport serial number of thequeen [calculated relative to the total number of all transportevents (i.e., of brood and adult ants together), brood transportevents, or adult ant transport events] is not random and furthermoreoccurs in the middle of the transport sequence. This resultrepresents a colony strategy because we found that the relativetransport serial number of the queen was related neither to emigration distance nor to colony size. Transporting queensin the middle of emigrations is a strategy probably favoredby selection and is an aspect of colonies behaving as group-leveladaptive units.  相似文献

Behavioral observations ofTrigona (Lepidotrigona) ventralis hoozana revealed the following ethological features: (1) Cell construction and food provisioning in cells are semisynchronous, and ovipositions are always batched. (2) The queen displays a peculiar behavior, “repeated turnings”, in front of the provisioned cells. (3) The queen often violently solicits workers food and, unlike other studied taxa, workers feed the queen rather frequently. (4) Worker oviposition is frequent when the colony is queen-right. While division of labor within leaf-cutting ant nests has been well-characterized in the context of the collection and processing of leaf material, environmental factors such as day-night cycles and heavy rainfall limit the time during which leaf-cutting ant workers leave the nest to gather forage. Using a novel “flat panel” nest design, we studied how patterns of within-nest task performance changed when a colony of the leaf-cutting ant Acromyrmex octospinosus was and was not provided access to forage. We conducted scan samples of individuals working within the nest under both conditions and compared task allocation patterns across provisioning regimes and between workers of different sizes. When labor was compared between worker size groups, “minor” workers (head width ≤2.0 mm) and “major” workers (head width >2.0 mm) showed significantly different task performance patterns when forage was available: minors performed mostly brood-care and garden maintenance, while majors were mostly involved in the handling of freshly-cut leaf fragments. In contrast, when the colony was deprived of forage, the task performance patterns of minor and major workers converged and did not significantly differ. Marked major workers known to be foragers tended to remain idle within the nest when the colony was deprived of forage, while non-foragers of similar head width engaged in a variety of within-nest tasks, suggesting polyethism in majors may be based on factors other than size.  相似文献

In many species of eusocial Hymenoptera, conflict about the production of males is resolved through “policing.” Recent studies in wasps and the ant Temnothorax unifasciatus suggest that in these species policing workers are dominant themselves and selfishly increase their own chances of later becoming fertile. Policing may therefore to some extent be associated with dominance and selfishness, and dominance and policing behaviour are indeed difficult to distinguish and often not mutually exclusive. Moreover, selfish policing requires that workers form rank orders already in the presence of the queen. Here, we try to allocate aggressiveness by workers towards policing and/or dominance behaviour and investigate whether hierarchies based on subtle, non-aggressive interactions exist in queenright colonies of the ant T. unifasciatus. We either split colonies into a queenright and queenless halve or temporarily removed the queen from complete colonies, which in both cases allows a few dominant workers to lay eggs in the queenless colony. Reunification of colony halves and return of the queen to orphaned colonies led to aggression against those workers that had become fertile during the absence of the queen. Dominant workers in reunited, split colonies were more severely attacked than those in orphaned colonies after return of the queen. Furthermore, we observed that workers, which later became dominant egg layers under queenless conditions, have more contact with the queen than other workers. Both results corroborate the existence of rank relationships among workers in queenright colonies and show that results from policing experiments may be affected by the disturbance of pre-existing hierarchies through colony splitting.  相似文献

1. Ant colonies commonly have multiple egg‐laying queens (secondary polygyny). Polygyny is frequently associated with polydomy (single colonies occupy multiple nest sites) and restricted dispersal of females. The production dynamics and reproductive allocation patterns within a population comprising one polygyne, polydomous colony of the red ant Myrmica rubra were studied. 2. Queen number per nest increased with nest density and the number of adult workers increased with the number of resident queens and with nest density. This suggests that nest site limitation promotes polygyny and that workers accumulate in nest units incapable of budding. 3. Nest productivity increased with the number of adult workers and production per queen was independent of queen number. Productivity increased with nest density, suggesting local resource enhancement. This shows that productivity can be a linear function of queen numbers and that the limiting factor is not the egg‐laying capacity of queens. 4. The total and per capita production of reproductives decreased towards the periphery of the colony, suggesting that the spatial location of nest units affects sexual production. Thus nests at the periphery of the colony invested more heavily in new workers. This is consistent with earlier observations in plants and could either represent investment in future budding or increased defence. 5. The colony produced only five new queens and 2071 males, hence the sex ratio was extremely male biased.  相似文献

The regulation of reproduction within insect societies is a key component of the evolution of eusociality. Differential patterns of hormone levels often underlie the reproductive division of labor observed among colony members, and further task partitioning among workers is also often correlated with differences in juvenile hormone (JH) and ecdysteroid content. We measured JH and ecdysteroid content of workers and queens of the ant Harpegnathos saltator. In this species, new colonies are founded by a single queen, but after she dies workers compete in an elaborate dominance tournament to decide a new group of reproductives termed “gamergates.” Our comparisons revealed that queens, gamergates, and inside workers (non-reproductive) did not differ in levels of JH or ecdysteroids. However, increased JH and decreased ecdysteroid content was observed in outside workers exhibiting foraging behavior. Application of a JH analog to virgin queens of H. saltator, although effective at inducing dealation, failed to promote egg production. Together, these results support the hypothesis that JH has lost its reproductive function in H. saltator to regulate foraging among the worker caste.  相似文献

Ant queens exhibit two primary strategies to initiate nests, independent colony founding (ICF) by solitary queens and dependent colony founding (DCF) when the queen starts a nest with a group of workers that disperse on foot from the parent nest. Numerous ant species have wingless (ergatoid) queens, and it is generally assumed that these species exhibit obligate DCF because their lack of wing musculature provides them with few resources to divert towards producing their first brood of workers. Thus, ICF by ergatoid queens is viewed as maladaptive because these queens need to take additional dangerous foraging trips to garner sufficient food to rear their first brood of workers. Contrary to this prediction, I document ICF by ergatoid queens for three species of harvester ants in the genus Pogonomyrmex (subfamily Myrmicinae), P. cunicularius cunicularius, P. cunicularius pencosensis, and P. huachucanus. Queens of P. huachucanus were obligate foragers, i.e., no minim workers could be produced without external food, and one queen of P. cunicularius pencosensis was observed foraging in the field. Abundant and/or predictable food resources likely select for the evolution of semi-claustral nest founding and ICF by these ergatoid queens. Under these conditions, foraging time would be minimized and the number and size of minim workers would be maximized. These benefits should increase founding success, which could compensate for loss of long-range dispersal. Overall, this study demonstrates that care should be taken before concluding that ant colonies employ DCF based solely on queen morphology.  相似文献

Using the ant-derived probe (pMY7), we performed DNA fingerprinting in monogynous and polygynous sibling ant speciesCamponotus nawai andCamponotus yamaokai. In monogynousC. nawai, band-sharing probabilities were low between unrelated individuals (mean 0.09), but those and relatedness estimates were consistently high between workers of the same nest (mean 0.85 and 0.74–0.83, respectively), suggesting that the queen mated once and nestmate workers are super-sisters. It also suggested monoandry: that is, that all nestmate workers shared most of the bands which were considered to have derived from a male. In polygynousC. yamaokai, band-sharing probabilities were low between queens of different populations (mean 0.13), moderate between queens of different nests in the same population (mean 0.25), but very high between queens of the same nest (within-nest means were 0.84–0.96). These results suggest that nestmate queens are genetically closely related with each other. Relatedness estimates between colony members sometimes reached 1. This might result from successive intranidal mating (inbreeding or large Wahlund effect) and adoption of new queens into the natal nests.  相似文献

In this paper we analyze emigration from nests by the polydomous ant Cataglyphis iberica. Social carrying of workers of this species between different nests of the colony is frequent. In Bellaterra (Barcelona, NE Spain), we monitored field emigration of C. iberica by noting for each nest the migratory behavior of C. iberica workers and, when the nests were attacked by another ant species, Camponotus foreli, we noted the number of C. foreli workers involved in the attacks. Emigration of C. iberica from nests was highly variable. We suggest the main factor determining emigration by this species was attack by workers of C. foreli, so emigration from C. iberica nests was much faster when harassment by C. foreli increased. The system of multiple nests of C. iberica enables this species to abandon attacked nests and to reinstall their population in other nests of the same colony. This reduces risk to the colonies because the route between the different nests is well known by transporter workers.  相似文献

The occurrence of a pre-imaginal caste determination represents a sort of “point of no return” to eusociality. In some social insect taxa, including Polistes species, the occurrence of distinct queen and worker castes is still debated. Before this report, no clear morphological differences between reproductive and non-reproductive individuals were known. Here we show that several pre-imaginal morphological differences of the Van der Vecht organ occur between foundresses (queens) and workers. Geometric morphometrics revealed that queens are characterized by shape deformations of this organ, which is responsible for a typical allometric growth of the secretory area. This organ is predicted to be larger in foundresses compared to workers because its secretion is involved in defense against ants, in nestmate recognition and in preventing workers from challenging for direct reproduction. The results presented here indicate the existence of an incipient morphological caste determination Polistes gallicus and suggest that this species may have passed the “point of no return” for eusociality.  相似文献

In insect societies, eggs laid by workers are frequently killed by other workers – a behaviour known as “worker policing”. The traditional explanation of worker policing is that it is a mechanism to resolve intracolony conflict, and maintain the reproductive monopoly of the queen. Recently, Pirk et al. (2004) proposed that worker policing instead is aimed at removing unviable worker-laid eggs and is ultimately just another example of hygienic behaviour. Here we test this hypothesis for the common wasp Vespula vulgaris, a species with highly effective worker policing. We show that worker-laid eggs from queenless colonies have a lower hatch rate (68%) than queen-laid eggs (82%). Analysis of egg laying rates of queens and workers, however, shows that the difference is not big enough to explain the apparent absence of adult worker-derived males in this species. Disturbance of W. auropunctata colonies first produced, as expected, significant dispersal of workers and queens, but this was soon followed by a radiate aggregation of workers, heads to center, in groups of 5 – 8 individuals, all with mandibles widely open. Queens did not aggregate, but instead searched for the grouped workers, antennating the gaster of a selected individual; after this, workers began to slowly board onto the queen’s body. This behavior was repeated with other groups, until the queen could not bear any more workers. This behavior is registered for the first time for adult ants, and is interpreted as a unique strategy to reorganize the nest or to establish a new colony. In monogynous ants, the death of the queen generally implies the death of the colony. However, queen replacement by either unrelated or related queen has been described in few species. In queenless ants from the genus Diacamma, the single reproductive worker (gamergate) is replaced by one of her daughters (or occasionally by a sister). From a long-term genetic survey of nests of D. cyaneiventre, we estimated the rate of gamergate turnover as well as the lifespan of workers and gamergate tenure using a maximum likelihood model developed for this purpose. We specifically compared the genotypes of two cohorts of workers sampled at 2 and 16 months interval from the same nests, using five microsatellite markers. To improve the accuracy of the estimates, we also used in the model the nests from the same population sampled only once and analysed by André et al. (2001). The model indicates that the possibility of the same nest not sheltering the same colony at two different sampling dates (colony turnover) was not significantly different from zero in our sample. The likelihood of the model was maximal for a probability of gamergate change pγ = 0.005 per day (i.e. a gamergate tenure of 200 days) and a worker lifespan w=60 days, indicating that the gamergate ‘s tenure is about 3 times longer than workers’ expected lifespan in the population studied. Moreover, the genetic analysis of the gamergate and brood in three colonies excavated completely, reveals that colony fission can occur just after a gamergate replacement with the sister of the new gamergate reproducing in the new propagule. Summary: Ninety-eight nests of various growing stages of Provespa anomala were found in the lowlands of Sumatra, Indonesia, from August to January. Its colony cycle is considered to be annual, with nests built throughout the year. There were two types of early nests before the emergence of workers, one with a worker number of less than 63 and the other of more than 231. The former were new nests, each containing a new queen and were built by reproductive swarming, whereas each of the latter was possibly re-built by an old queen and an absconding swarm. Ten swarming colonies were attracted by an oil-lamp light; these consisted of a copulated queen with immature oocytes in the ovary and 55 workers on average. No males, or workers stylopized by Xenos provesparum were observed either in colonies before worker emergence or in swarms coming flying into the light. Differences between swarming in Provespa, polygyny and nest relocation in Vespa, and those in swarm-founding Polistinae are discussed.  相似文献

We investigated worker regulation of queen activity during reproductive swarming by examining the rates at which workers performed vibration signals and piping on queens during the different stages of the swarming process. Worker–queen interactions were first examined inside observation hives during the 2–3 wk that preceded the issue of the swarm (pre‐swarming period) and then inside the swarm clusters during the period that preceded liftoff and relocation to a new nest site (post‐swarming period). Queen court size did not differ between the pre‐ and post‐swarming periods, but workers fed the queens less inside the swarm clusters. Workers performed vibration signals on the queens at increasing rates throughout the pre‐swarming period inside the natal nest, but rarely or never vibrated the queen inside the swarm. Piping was performed on the queens during both the pre‐ and post‐swarming periods and always reached a peak immediately before queen flight. During the final 2–4 h before swarm liftoff, queens were increasingly contacted by waggle dancers for nest sites, some of which piped the queen. The vibration signal may operate in a modulatory manner to gradually prepare the queen for flight from the natal nest, and the cumulative effects of the signal during the pre‐swarming period may make further vibrations on the queen unnecessary when inside the swarm cluster. In contrast, worker piping may function in a more immediate manner to trigger queen takeoff during both the pre‐ and post‐swarming periods. Workers that vibrate and pipe the queen tend to be older, foraging‐age bees. The regulation of queen activity during colony reproduction may therefore be controlled largely by workers that normally have little contact with queens, but help to formulate colony reproductive and movement decisions.  相似文献

This study describes the behavioral repertoire of a mature colony of Ectatomma opaciventre Roger. Twenty-eight different behavioral acts were recorded from 4538 individual observations. There was evidence of age polyethism, with young workers performing significantly more brood care and allogrooming than older workers. Experiments were also performed to investigate the behavioral organization of nest relocation in E. opaciventre. This complex social behavior was regulated by a few workers which specialized in transporting nestmates, including other workers, winged gynes, males, and the queen. Winged gynes were also observed performing adult transport. The carrying posture utilized in E. opaciventre is similar to that in other ponerines, although some idiosyncratic features were detected.  相似文献

Summary. Polygyny, the presence of several mated queens within the same colony, is widespread in insect societies. This phenomenon is commonly associated with ecological constraints such as limited nest sites. In habitats where solitary nest foundation is risky, monogynous colonies can reintegrate young daughter queens (secondary polygyny). We studied the reproductive structure (i.e. queen number) of the ectatommine ant Ectatomma tuberculatum from Bahia State, Brazil. This species was found to present facultative polygyny: out of a total of 130 colonies collected, 39.2% were monogynous, while 43.8% were polygynous. Polygynous colonies had significantly more workers than monogynous ones. Queen number in polygynous colonies ranged from 2 to 26, with an average of 4 ± 4 queens per colony. All nestmate queens were egg-layers with no apparent dominance hierarchy or agonistic behavior. Non-nestmate queens were adopted by monogynous colonies suggesting that polygyny is secondary, originating through queen adoption. This species is characterized by an open recognition system, which probably allows a switch from monogynous to polygynous colonies. The behavioral acts of queens showed that resident queens remained frequently immobile on or near the brood, contrarily to alien or adopted queens and gynes. In addition, monogynous queens showed no behavioral or physiological (i.e. by ovarian status) differences in comparison with polygynous ones. Secondary or facultative polygyny, probably associated with queen adoption, may have been favored in particular environmental conditions. Indeed, by increasing colony productivity (i.e. number of workers) and territory size (by budding and polydomy), polygyny could uphold E. tuberculatum as a dominant species in the mosaic of arboreal ants in Neotropical habitats.Received 7 April 2004; revised 11 November 2004; accepted 15 November 2004.  相似文献

Although nests are central to colonial life in social insects, nests are sometimes damaged by predators or natural disasters. After nest destruction, individuals usually construct new nests. In this case, a sophisticated mechanism like the scent trail pheromone used in large insect colonies that recruit individuals to new nest sites would be important for the maintenance of eusociality. In independent-founding Polistes wasps, it is well known that queens enforce workers physiologically on the natal nests even if evidence of trail pheromone use has not been exhibited. We investigated the effect of the queen on an alternative strategy for the maintenance of eusociality by first females after nest destruction in the primitively eusocial wasp Polistes chinensis. We predicted that the first females in queen-absent colonies have various behavioral options after nest destruction. Even if the females construct new nests cooperatively with other individuals, the new nest construction should be conducted more smoothly in queen-present colonies because the queens regulate the behavior of wasps. We made wasps construct new nests by removing the entire brood from existing nests. The presence of the queen did not cause variation in the alternative strategy of the first females, as the first females (workers) usually constructed new nests cooperatively irrespective of the queen-presence. Thus, the workers in the queenpresent colonies affiliated to the new nest construction more smoothly and constructed new nests more efficiently than workers in the queen-absent colonies. Our results suggest that the presence of the queen is important for maintaining eusociality in primitively eusocial wasps after nest destruction.
