Premolt, molting, and postmolt worms of Gnathostoma doloresi (Nematoda: Gnathostomatoidea) recovered from the stomach wall of naturally infected wild boars Sus scrofa leucomystax in Miyazaki, Japan, were examined morphologically. The only molt observed was that from the advanced third-stage to the adult stage. It is strongly suggested that the gnathostomes molt only once in the definitive host.  相似文献

The nucleotide sequences of partial 18S, complete internal transcribed spacer region 1 (ITS1), complete 5.8S, complete ITS2 and partial 28S of ribosomal DNA (rDNA) and cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 of mitochondrial DNA (MCOI) from five species of gnathostomes (G. spinigerum, G. doloresi, G. nipponicum, G. hispidum and G. binucleatum with the former four species being distributed in Japan and Asia) that cause human gnathostomiasis were compared by direct polymerase chain reaction cycle-sequencing. The nucleotide sequences of each region of the18S (613 bp), 5.8S (158 bp) and 28S (598 bp) rDNA from the five species were almost identical. The ITS1 region was different in length for the five species. The nucleotide sequences of each region of ITS2 and partial MCO1 regions were different among the five species. Therefore, these two regions can be used as genetic markers for identification of worms.  相似文献

A fish body condition index was calculated twice for each individual fish, including or excluding parasite mass from fish body mass, and index values were compared to test the effects of parasite mass on measurement of body condition. Potential correlations between parasite load and the two alternative fish condition index values were tested to assess how parasite mass may influence the perception of the actual effects of parasitism on fish body condition. Helminth parasite mass was estimated in common bully Gobiomorphus cotidianus from four New Zealand lakes and used to assess the biasing effects of parasite mass on body condition indices. Results showed that the inclusion or exclusion of parasite mass from fish body mass in index calculations significantly influenced correlation patterns between parasite load and fish body condition indices. When parasite mass was included, there was a positive correlation between parasite load and fish body condition, seemingly indicating that fish in better condition supported higher parasite loads. When parasite mass was excluded, there was no correlation between parasite load and fish body condition, i.e. there was no detectable effect of helminth parasites on fish condition or fish condition on parasite load. Fish body condition tended to be overestimated when parasite mass was not accounted for; results showed a positive correlation between relative parasite mass and the degree to which individual fish condition was overestimated. Regardless of the actual effects of helminth parasites on fish condition, parasite mass contained within a fish should be taken into account when estimating fish condition. Parasite tissues are not host tissues and should not be included in fish mass when calculating a body condition index, especially when looking at potential effects of helminth infections on fish condition.  相似文献

An experimental epidemiological approach was chosen to study the survival and infection dynamics of Gyrodactylus salaris on juvenile rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss , in the laboratory. A marked heterogeneity in the host stock was apparent. The rainbow trout could be divided into three groups on the basis of parasite survival and infection pattern on individually isolated fish: (1) hosts receptive to initial parasite attachment, but unreceptive to parasite establishment and reproduction; (2) hosts moderately susceptible to parasite establishment and reproduction, but which, after a period of restricted parasite population growth, responded, recovered and eliminated the parasites; and (3) hosts very susceptible to parasite infection and reproduction, but which, after a period of significant parasite population growth, responded, recovered and eliminated the parasites. These different patterns are considered to reflect genetic differences between host individuals. Parasite aggregation was also shown to be an important factor in the outcome of the host-parasite association. The parasites were finally eliminated on the individually isolated hosts, but not on hosts maintained in batches and so host population size and immigration of fresh. previously unexposed, hosts appeared to be important for growth and maintenance of the parasite population. The parasite was not found to cause host mortality. Rainbow trout was a suitable host for G. salaris , capable of transmitting the parasite to new localities as a consequence of stocking programmes or migratory behaviour.  相似文献

Communities of parasites of freshwater fish of Jersey, Channel Islands   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The parasite faunas of 12 species of freshwater fish from 17 localities on the island of Jersey were examined. Comparison of the species composition, number, diversity and equitability of the parasite fauna of each species of fish in each locality revealed that community diversity was always low, that most communities were dominated by a single species of parasite, and that community similarity between host species, and often between sites, was generally low. This was not related to unavailability or distribution of potential, invertebrate, intermediate host species, but appeared to be due to chance colonization events. With two exceptions, little exchange of parasites took place between host species, despite vacant niches in the parasite communities and the absence of competitors, and normal parasite specificity was maintained. Comparison of the parasite communities with those on other oceanic islands suggests that they are poorer than would be predicted by island biogeographical theory, and that this is not a very good predictor of parasite community richness on oceanic islands.  相似文献

Before cloning was perfected, the only way to maintain schistosome strains was by sustaining the entire parasite cycle, ie. by ensuring the regular transmission of the parasite from the snail to the vertebrate, then from the vertebrate to the snail, and so on ad infinitum. Joseph Jourdane explains that by cloning the parasite in the snail and transplanting the larval parasite from snail to snail, the passage in vertebrates can be avoided indefinitely.  相似文献

There have been numerous investigations of parasite local adaptation, a phenomenon important from the perspectives of both basic and applied evolutionary ecology. Recent work has demonstrated that temperature has striking effects on parasite performance by mediating trade-offs in parasite life history and through genotype × environment interactions. To test whether parasite local adaptation is mediated by temperature, I measured the performance of sympatric populations against allopatric populations of a fungal pathogen, Podosphaera plantaginis , on its host Plantago lanceolata , across a temperature gradient. I used data on parasite life history and epidemiology to derive fitness estimates to measure local adaptation. The results demonstrate unambiguously that trajectories of host–parasite co-evolution are tightly coupled with parasite adaptation to the abiotic habitat, as the strength, and even direction, of local adaptation varied with temperature. Patterns of local adaptation further depended on how parasite fitness was estimated, highlighting the importance of choosing relevant fitness measures in studies of local adaptation.  相似文献

Impact of a Novel, Feminising Microsporidium on its Crustacean Host   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We describe the transmission and pathogenic effects of a novel, feminising microsporidium, probably a Nasema species, on its crustacean host Gammarus duebeni. The parasite prevalence in the field was high (46% of females were infected) and the parasite was transovarially transmitted to 91% of embryos of infected females. The impact of the parasite on the host was assessed by means of a host breeding experiment. The parasite feminised 66% of infected host young and was transovarially transmitted by these individuals to the next host generation. The parasite differed from other feminising microsporidia in G. duebeni in that early embryos had a high parasite burden (288 parasites per embryo) and the infection was pathogenic, causing a reduction in both the growth rate of young hosts and in adult size. This study suggests that feminising microsporidia are a diverse group in which a variety of host/pathogen relationships have evolved.  相似文献

Numerous parasites with complex life cycles are able to manipulate the behaviour of their intermediate host in a way that increases their trophic transmission to the definitive host. Pomphorhynchus laevis, an acanthocephalan parasite, is known to reverse the phototactic behaviour of its amphipod intermediate host, Gammarus pulex, leading to an increased predation by fish hosts. However, levels of behavioural manipulation exhibited by naturally-infected gammarids are extremely variable, with some individuals being strongly manipulated whilst others are almost not affected by infection. To investigate parasite age and parasite intensity as potential sources of this variation, we carried out controlled experimental infections on gammarids using parasites from two different populations. We first determined that parasite intensity increased with exposure dose, but found no relationship between infection and host mortality. Repeated measures confirmed that the parasite alters host behaviour only when it reaches the cystacanth stage which is infective for the definitive host. They also revealed, we believe for the first time, that the older the cystacanth, the more it manipulates its host. The age of the parasite is therefore a major source of variation in parasite manipulation. The number of parasites within a host was also a source of variation. Manipulation was higher in hosts infected by two parasites than in singly infected ones, but above this intensity, manipulation did not increase. Since the development time of the parasite was also different according to parasite intensity (it was longer in doubly infected hosts than in singly infected ones, but did not increase more in multi-infected hosts), individual parasite fitness could depend on the compromise between development time and manipulation efficiency. Finally, the two parasite populations tested induced slightly different degrees of behavioural manipulation.  相似文献

Parasites and infectious diseases represent ecological forces shaping animal social evolution. Although empirical studies supporting this link abound in various vertebrate orders, both the study of the dynamics and impact of parasite infections and infectious diseases in strepsirrhine primates have received little empirical attention. We conducted a longitudinal parasitological study on four groups of wild red‐fronted lemurs (Eulemur fulvus rufus) at Kirindy Forest, Madagascar, during two field seasons in consecutive years to investigate i) the degree of gastrointestinal parasite infection on population and individual levels and ii) factors potentially determining individual infection risk. Using a comprehensive dataset with multiple individually assignable parasite samples as well as information on age, sex, group size, social rank, and endocrine status (fecal androgen and glucocorticoid), we examined parasite infection patterns and host traits that may affect individual infection risk. In addition, we examined whether parasite infection affects mating and reproductive success. Our results indicated high variability in parasite infection on individual and population levels. Time of year and group size was important determinants of variability in parasite infection. Variation in hormone levels was also associated with parasite species richness and parasite infection intensity. Differences in parasite infection between years indicate a potential immune‐enhancing function of steroid hormones on nematode infections, which has not been reported before from other vertebrates studied under natural conditions. Male mating and reproductive success were not correlated to any measure of parasite infection, which suggests a nonfunctional role of the parasites we examined in primate sexual selection. The phagocytosis of free Plasmodium chabaudi parasite by resident peritoneal macrophages of mouse was studied in an in vitro system. The effect of antimalarial antiserum (HIS) was assessed by preincubation of parasite macrophages and both parasite and macrophages with HIS prior to use in phagocytic assays. Highest phagocytic index was obtained with HIS pretreated parasites. The two activities viz. opsonic (parasite dependent) and cytophilic (macrophage dependent) were noted to operate independent of each other. The phagocytosis promoting activity was found to be complement dependent. The receptor site for binding of HIS opsonized but not medium opsonized parasite on the surface of macrophages was blocked by pretreatment of these cells with HIS-soluble antigen combination.  相似文献

Characterizing genetic variation in parasite transmission traits and its contribution to parasite vigor is essential for understanding the evolution of parasite life‐history traits. We measured genetic variation in output, activity, survival, and infection success of clonal transmission stages (cercaria larvae) of a complex life cycle parasite (Diplostomum pseudospathaceum). We further tested if variation in host nutritional stage had an effect on these traits by keeping hosts on limited or ad libitum diet. The traits we measured were highly variable among parasite genotypes indicating significant genetic variation in these life‐history traits. Traits were also phenotypically variable, for example, there was significant variation in the measured traits over time within each genotype. However, host nutritional stage had no effect on the parasite traits suggesting that a short‐term reduction in host resources was not limiting the cercarial output or performance. Overall, these results suggest significant interclonal and phenotypic variation in parasite transmission traits that are not affected by host nutritional status.  相似文献

The adaptive trade-off theory for the evolution and maintenance of parasite virulence requires that virulence be genetically correlated with other fitness characteristics of the parasite. Many theoretical models rely on a positive correlation between virulence and transmissibility. They assume that high parasite replication rates are associated with a high probability of transmission (and, hence, increased parasite fitness), but also with high levels of damage to the host (high virulence). Schistosomes are macroparasites with an indirect life cycle involving a mammalian and a molluscan host. Here we demonstrate, through the development of five substrains, a genetic basis for schistosome virulence. We used these substrains further in order to investigate the presence of parasite fitness traits that were genetically correlated with virulence. High virulence in the (mouse) definitive host was, as predicted, positively correlated with parasite replication. In contrast, in the (snail) intermediate host high virulence was associated with low parasite replication rates. Variation in infectivity to and parasite replication in the definitive host was suggested as a compensating mechanism for the maintenance of virulence in the snail host. This is the first report of a trade-off in parasite reproductive success across hosts in an indirectly transmitted macroparasite.  相似文献

Some hosts harbor diverse parasite communities, whereas others are relatively parasite free. Many factors have been proposed to account for patterns of parasite species richness, but few studies have investigated competing hypotheses among multiple parasite communities in the same host clade. We used a comparative data set of 941 host-parasite combinations, representing 101 anthropoid primate species and 231 parasite taxa, to test the relative importance of four sets of variables that have been proposed as determinants of parasite community diversity in primates: host body mass and life history, social contact and population density, diet, and habitat diversity. We defined parasites broadly to include not only parasitic helminths and arthropods but also viruses, bacteria, fungi, and protozoa, and we controlled for effects of uneven sampling effort on per-host measures of parasite diversity. In nonphylogenetic tests, body mass was correlated with total parasite diversity and the diversity of helminths and viruses. When phylogeny was taken into account, however, body mass became nonsignificant. Host population density, a key determinant of parasite spread in many epidemiological models, was associated consistently with total parasite species richness and the diversity of helminths, protozoa, and viruses tested separately. Geographic range size and day range length explained significant variation in the diversity of viruses.  相似文献

Most studies of the consequences of parasitism on fitness have examined single host–parasite systems. However, parasitological studies show that most hosts are constantly challenged by a complex parasite community. Thus, neither the response of hosts to individual parasite species nor the individual impact of these parasite species is likely to be as unconstrained as studies of single host–parasite systems might suggest. In this study, the parasite community structure in spring queens of the common European bumble bee, Bombus pratorum, was assessed. By capturing queens and allowing them to rear colonies in the laboratory, the relative impact of different parasite species on fitness across the annual host life-cycle could be examined. Of 160 queens, 67% were parasitised by one or more members of a five-species parasite community. The impact of parasites varied from being highly virulent to undetectable under benign laboratory conditions. The majority of multi-parasite infections involved a high impact parasite, which resulted in the removal of associated parasites from the host population. This study shows that, whilst multiple infections occur within individual hosts, most parasites act individually on their hosts. However, multiple parasite species in the host population may constrain the host population’s ability to adapt to single parasite species.  相似文献

The effects of ascorbate and copper on the development of Plasmodium falciparum were studied in two modes: pretreatment of uninfected erythrocytes followed by infection by P. falciparum and treatment of parasitized erythrocytes. Pretreatment of G6PD(+) cells with ascorbate caused a slight enhancement in parasite development, while in G6PD(-) cells a suppressive effect on the plasmodia was demonstrated. Copper alone interfered with parasite growth in both cell types. The combination of copper and ascorbate arrested parasite maturation, an effect which was more pronounced in G6PD(-) cells. Synergism between copper and ascorbate was better demonstrated following the treatment of infected erythrocytes: while ascorbate alone supported parasite development and copper alone had only a marginal suppressive effect, the combination of copper and ascorbate yielded a marked inhibition of parasite growth. Ascorbate proved destructive to the parasites in the presence of adventitious copper, or on the second day of the parasite life cycle. In these cases it acted as a pro-oxidant, while in other systems, in particular in the presence of a chelator, ascorbate acted as an antioxidant and promoted parasite growth. The understanding of the role of transition metals and free radicals in parasite development and injury could shed light on novel approaches to fight malaria.  相似文献

Host–parasite evolutionary interactions are typically considered in a pairwise species framework. However, natural infections frequently involve multiple parasites. Altering parasite diversity alters ecological and evolutionary dynamics as parasites compete and hosts resist multiple infection. We investigated the effects of parasite diversity on host–parasite population dynamics and evolution using the pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa and five lytic bacteriophage parasites. To manipulate parasite diversity, bacterial populations were exposed for 24 hours to either phage monocultures or diverse communities containing up to five phages. Phage communities suppressed host populations more rapidly but also showed reduced phage density, likely due to interphage competition. The evolution of resistance allowed rapid bacterial recovery that was greater in magnitude with increases in phage diversity. We observed no difference in the extent of resistance with increased parasite diversity, but there was a profound impact on the specificity of resistance; specialized resistance evolved to monocultures through mutations in a diverse set of genes. In summary, we demonstrate that parasite diversity has rapid effects on host–parasite population dynamics and evolution by selecting for different resistance mutations and affecting the magnitude of bacterial suppression and recovery. Finally, we discuss the implications of phage diversity for their use as biological control agents.  相似文献

As part of the endangered humpback chub (HBC; Gila cypha ) Adaptive Management Program, a parasite survey was conducted from 28 June to 17 July 2006 in 8 tributaries and 7 adjacent sections of the main stem of the Colorado River, U.S.A. In total, 717 fish were caught, including 24 HBC. Field necropsies yielded 19 parasite species, 5 of which (Achtheres sp., Kathlaniidae gen. sp., Caryophyllaidae gen. sp., Myxidium sp., and Octomacrum sp.) are new records for Grand Canyon, Arizona, U.S.A. Spearman's correlation coefficient analyses showed no correlations between parasite burden and fork length for various combinations of fish and parasite species. Regression analyses suggest that no parasite species had a strong effect on fish length. The most diverse parasite community (n = 14) was at river kilometer (Rkm) 230, near the confluence of Kanab Creek. The most diverse parasite infracommunity (n = 12) was found in the non-native channel catfish (CCF; Ictaluris punctatus). Overall parasite prevalence was highest in CCF (85%) followed by that in HBC (58%). The parasite fauna of humpback chub was mainly composed of Bothriocephalus acheilognathi and Ornithodiplostomum sp. metacercariae.  相似文献

Microsporidia are unusual amongst eukaryotic parasites in that they utilize both vertical and horizontal transmission and vertically transmitted species can cause sex ratio distortion in their host. Here we study vertical transmission in two species of feminising microsporidia, Nosema granulosis and Dictyocoela duebenum, infecting a single population of the crustacean host Gammarus duebeni and measure the effect of temperature on parasite transmission and replication. N. granulosis was vertically transmitted to 82% of the host embryos and D. duebenum was transmitted to 72% of host embryos. For both parasites, we report relatively low parasite burdens in developing host embryos. However, the parasites differ in their pattern of replication and burden within developing embryos. Whilst N. granulosis undergoes replication during host development, the burden of D. duebenum declines, leading us to propose that parasite dosage and feminisation efficiency underlie the different parasite frequencies in the field. We also examine the effect of temperature on parasite transmission and replication. Temperature does not affect the percentage of young that inherit the infection. However, low temperatures inhibit parasite replication relative to host cell division, resulting in a reduction in parasite burden in infected embryos. The reduced parasite burden at low temperatures may underpin reduced feminization at low temperatures and so limit the spread of sex ratio distorters through the host population.  相似文献

Bumblebee colonies are founded by a single-mated queen. Due to this life history trait, bumblebees are more susceptible to parasites and diseases than polyandrous and/or polygynous social insects. A greater resistance towards parasites is shown when the genetic variability within a colony is increased. The parasite resistance may be divided into different levels regarding the step of the parasite infection (e.g. parasite uptake, parasite intake, parasite's establishment in the nest, parasite transmission). We investigate the prophylactic behaviour of bumblebees. Bumblebees were observed during their foraging flights on two artificial flowers; one of these was contaminated by Crithidia bombi, a naturally occurring gut parasite of bumblebees (in a control experiment the non-specific pathogen Escherichia coli was used). For C. bombi, bumblebees were preferentially observed feeding on the non-contaminated flower. Whereas for E. coli, the number of visits between flowers was the same, bumblebees spent more time feeding on the non-contaminated flower. These results demonstrate the ability of bumblebees to recognise the contamination of food sources. In addition, bumblebees have a stronger preference for the non-contaminated flower when C. bombi is present in the other flower than with E. coli which might be explained as an adaptive behaviour of bumblebees towards this specific gut parasite. It seems that the more specific the parasite is, the more it reduces the reward of the flower.  相似文献
