There are increasing interests in rearing edible insects in Africa, but information on how the feeds modify their fatty acids is largely lacking. In this work, the influence of artificial diets on the fatty acid contents and composition in the edible Ruspolia differens (Serville, 1838), in Uganda was assessed. R. differens was reared on the mixtures of six gradually diversified diets of two, three, four, six, eight and nine feeds. The diets were formulated from rice seed head, finger millet seed head, wheat bran, superfeed chicken egg booster, sorghum seed head, germinated finger millet, simsim cake, crushed dog biscuit pellet and shea butter. Fatty acid methyl esters were prepared using direct transesterification method, and analysed using gas chromatography. The contents of saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acid differed significantly among the diets. The more diverse diets resulted in increased content of the polyunsaturated fatty acids. The n6:n3 ratio differed significantly among the diets and between the sexes, with R. differens fed on the four-feed diet having a higher n6:n3 ratio than those fed on other diets. Also, the fatty acid composition differed significantly among the diets, and diet diversification corresponded with the proportions of polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially linoleic acid. Overall, our results demonstrate that higher levels of essential fatty acids can be achieved by rearing R. differens on highly diversified diets. These findings are important in informing the design of future mass-rearing program for this edible insect.  相似文献

We compared the fatty acid (FA) composition of the muscle and gonads of female Iberian sardines with hydrated oocytes collected during the 2002/03 spawning season off southern Portugal (November and February) and off western Portugal (February). Sardine condition and total FA concentration in the muscle decreased between the two sampling dates, while the gonadosomatic index was similar between samples. Total monounsaturated FA concentrations in sardine gonads were different for the three samples while saturated and polyunsaturated FA concentrations were similar. Significant linear relations were found between FA concentrations in female muscle and oocytes, including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5n − 3) and arachidonic acid (AA; 20:4n − 6), both being essential for normal larval development. The concentration of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6n − 3) in oocytes was independent on muscle concentration, probably resulting from its selective transfer to the oocytes. The EPA/DHA ratio was highly conserved in sardine tissues, while DHA/AA and EPA/AA ratios varied significantly between samples. These results indicate that the FA content of eggs produced by sardines varies throughout the spawning season, egg FA concentrations decreasing as females lose condition, and FA composition also shows spatial variability. Both types of variability may have a significant impact on egg quality, particularly on the amount of reserves available to larvae affecting their resistance to starvation, and the appropriate FA composition required for normal growth.

Fatty acid composition of lipids in various organs of the bonito (Euthynnus pelamis), a typical species within the tuna species, caught in the sea off the Pacific coast of Japan, was determined by gas-liquid chromatography. The major fatty acids of all organs examined were palmitic acid (16:0), palmitoleic acid (16:1), oleic acid (18:1), icosapentaenoic acid (20:5), and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6). 22:6 (DHA) was the dominant fatty acid accounting for 25% or more of the total fatty acids in all organs of the bonito, caught in the sea off the Japanese coast.  相似文献

The haptophyte microalga Tisochrysis lutea was heterotrophically grown in F2 medium with different combinations of pH and salinity. Growth, oil content and fatty acids (FAs) profile were determined under each set of conditions. The salinity was adjusted using NaCl at concentrations of 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, or 1.0 M, while pH was adjusted at 7, 8, or 9, and heterotrophic growth was performed using organic carbon in the form of sugar cane industry waste (CM). Fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) were identified by gas chromatography. The results showed that pH of 8.0 was the optimal for dry weight and oil production, regardless of the salinity level. At pH 8.0, growth at a salinity of 0.4 M NaCl was optimal for biomass accumulation (1.185 g L-1). Under these conditions, the maximum growth rate was 0.055 g L-1 d-1, with a doubling time of 17.5 h and a degree of multiplication of 2.198. Oil content was maximal (34.87%) when the salinity was 0.4 M and the pH was 9.0. The ratio of saturated to unsaturated FAs was affected by the pH value and salinity, in that unsaturated FAs increased to 58.09% of the total FAs, considerably greater than the value of 40.59% obtained for the control (0.4 M NaCl and pH 8.0).  相似文献

During energy-demanding periods of the annual cycle such as migration or during cold days in winter, birds store fat comprised mostly of 16- or 18-carbon unsaturated fatty acids. In such situations, birds may feed selectively on foods with specific fatty acids that enable efficient fat deposition. We offered wild-caught yellow-rumped warblers Dendroica coronata paired choices between semi-synthetic diets that differed only in their fatty acid composition. Warblers strongly preferred diets containing long-chain (18:1; carbon atoms:double bonds) unsaturated, unesterified fatty acids to diets containing long-chain saturated, unesterified fatty acids (18:0) and they preferred diets containing mono-unsaturated fats (18:1) to diets containing poly-unsaturated fats (18:2). The preference for diets containing long-chain unsaturated fatty acids to diets containing long-chain saturated fatty acids was consistent in birds tested one week after capture at 21°C, one month after capture when cold-acclimated (1°C), and six weeks after capture at 21°C. Birds acclimated to a diet with 50% of the fat comprised of unesterified stearic acid (18:0) lost mass and reduced their food intake when we reduced ambient temperature from 21°C to 11°C over three days. We conclude that especially in energy-demanding situations there are limits to the yellow-rumped warblers' ability to assimilate some long-chain saturated fatty acids and that this digestive constraint can explain in part why yellow-rumped warblers prefer diets containing long-chain unsaturated fatty acids to diets containing long-chain saturated fatty acids.  相似文献

Analysis of the fatty acid (FA) composition of blubber is a valuable tool in interpreting the diet of marine mammals. This technique is based on the principle that particular FA present in prey can be incorporated largely untransformed into predator adipose tissue stores, thereby providing biochemical signatures with which to identify prey species. Several studies of phocid seals and cetaceans have documented vertical stratification in the FA composition of blubber such that inferences about diet may vary greatly depending on the layer of the blubber that is analysed. It is not known whether blubber in otariid seals (fur seals and sea lions) also displays vertical stratification in FA composition. Furthermore, it is not known whether the FA composition of blubber is uniform in these species. In the present study, the vertical and regional variation in FA composition of blubber was investigated in seven adult female Cape fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus). The proportion of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) was greater in the outer (43.6±1.3%) than inner portion (40.9±1.2%; t20=5.59, P<0.001) whereas the proportions were greater in the inner than outer portions for saturated fatty acids (23.6±0.5% and 21.9±0.6%, respectively, t20 = 5.31, P<0.001) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA, 35.5±0.7% and 34.5±0.7%, respectively, t20 = 3.81, P < 0.001). There was an inverse relationship between MUFA and PUFA in the blubber, independent of sampling location. In addition, with the exception of the inner portion from non-lactating females, blubber from the mammary area had the highest proportions of 18:19c and total MUFA, followed by blubber from the rump and neck, suggesting that the deposition and mobilisation of blubber lipids may not be uniform around the body in otariid seals. These results support the need for blubber tissue to be sampled from the same site on animals, and to the full depth of the blubber layer, to minimise variation in FA profiles that could occur if different sites and depths were sampled. Such standardisation of sampling will further aid in interpreting diet in otariid seals using the FA Signature Analysis approach.  相似文献

This study set out to identify whether stearidonic acid (18:4n-3; STA) can be used to increase the eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3; EPA) content of plasma lipids and cells in humans and to understand more about the effects of increased consumption of gamma-linolenic acid (18:3n-3; GLA), STA and EPA in humans. Healthy young males were randomised to consume one of seven oil blends for a period of 12 weeks (9g oil/day) (n = 8-12 subjects/group). Palm oil, sunflower oil, an EPA-rich oil, borage oil (rich in GLA), and Echium oil (rich in STA) were blended in various combinations to generate a placebo oil and oils providing approximately 2g GLA + STA + EPA per day, but in different combinations. Blood was collected at 0, 4, 8 and 12 weeks and the fatty acid compositions of plasma triacylglycerols, cholesteryl esters and phospholipids and of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) determined. Significant effects were observed with each lipid fraction. Neither STA nor its derivative 20:4n-3 appeared in any of the lipid fractions studied when STA (up to 1g/day) was consumed. However, STA (1g/day), in combination with GLA (0.9 g/day), increased the proportion of EPA in some lipid fractions, suggesting that STA-rich plant oils may offer a novel means of increasing EPA status. Furthermore, this combination tended to increase the dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (20:3n-6; DGLA) content of PBMCs, without an increase in arachidonic acid (AA) (20:4n-6) content. EPA consumption increased the EPA content of all lipid fractions studied. Consumption of GLA (2g/day), in the absence of STA or EPA, increased DGLA content with a tendency to increase AA content in some fractions. This effect was prevented by inclusion of EPA in combination with GLA. Thus, this study indicates that STA may be used as a precursor to increase the EPA content of human lipids and that combinations of GLA, STA and EPA can be used to manipulate the fatty acid compositions of lipid pools in subtle ways. Such effects may offer new strategies for manipulation of cell composition in order to influence cellular responses and functions in desirable ways.  相似文献

Fatty acid concentrations found in the yolk of green sea turtles reflect differences in the diet of the mothers. All of the 12 fatty acids measured in yolk samples were significantly different between eggs produced from the pellet and wild-type diets. However, the relative pattern of yolk fatty acids in the green turtle mirrored those of other reptiles. Yolk samples contained mostly (63–67%) 14:0. 16:0, 16:1n-7 and 18:1n-9. Yolks from captive animals on pellet diet contained an additional 17.64% of the total yolk lipid as 12:0 and 18:2n-6. Wild yolks contained an extra 11.41% of lipid as 18:0 and 18:1n-7. Selection of fatty acids for the yolk should balance the energetic and anabolic needs of the embryo. Eggs are provisioned based on maternal metabolism of available nutrients and subtle differences between natural foods and those available in captivity could affect the viability of future eggs.  相似文献

Dietary fatty acid incorporation and changes in various lipid and phospholipid classes in the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis subjected to three different dietary regimens were analysed and compared. Group A was unfed; group B received a diet consisting of 100% Thalassiosira weissflogii, exhibiting the typical fatty acid composition of diatoms, and group C received a diet consisting of 100% wheat germ conferring a 18:2:n-6 abundance. Biochemical analyses of diets and mussels were carried out at the beginning and at the end of the 30-day experimental period. Starvation and T. weissflogii based diet poorly affected mussel growth and fatty acid composition which remained unchanged. On the contrary, the wheat germ-based diet increased the condition index and deeply affected the fatty acid profile of all lipid and phospholipid classes. The high dietary 18:2n-6 level drastically reduced tissue content of 20:4n-6, 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3. The biosynthesis of Non Methylene Interrupted (NMI) dienoic fatty acid appeared to be insensitive to the high input of 16:1n-7 and 18:1n-9 respectively from diet B and C, and to the PUFA shortage of diet C. Nevertheless the two NMI trienoic derivatives, 20:3Δ5,11,14 and 22:3Δ7,13 16, were found higher in C with respect to other groups, presumably due to the high 18:2n-6 content of this diet.  相似文献

This report deals with data on the cell ultrastructure of Candida tropicals strain D-2 mutants resistant to the polyene antibiotic, nystatin, and with an analysis of the fractional composition of neutral lipids and their fatty acids. The ultrastructural organization of the mutant cells is characterized by thickening of the cell wall and formation of invaginations into the cytoplasm, the appearance of new formations, large vacuoles, and reduction of the system of mitochondrial cristae. Lipids of nysr mutants differ from those of the nyss variant in having a decreased content of steroids and some fractions of neutral lipids. Certain nysr mutants manifest difference in the relative amounts of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids (C16:0, C16:1, C18:0, C18:1).  相似文献

Sixty-five fatty acids were quantified in the blubber of common dolphins (Delphinus delphis, D. capensis) incidentally caught off the coast of southern California. Dolphins were grouped by sex, reproductive status and species, and a blubber sample was collected at a mid-lateral site located caudal to the trailing edge of the dorsal fin. Samples were divided horizontally into inner, middle and outer layers and gradients in fatty acid content (mass percent) were observed across the depth of the blubber. Levels of monounsaturated fatty acids were greatest in the outer layer, whereas levels of saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids were greatest in the inner layer. Degree of stratification was greatest in sexually mature dolphins. Blubber of sexually immature, but physically mature, male dolphins was also highly stratified, suggesting that this difference may be attributed to differences in diet. Classification and regression tree analysis resulted in the fewest misclassifications when dolphins were grouped by species, possibly indicating that these closely related animals forage on different prey species. Dietary-derived fatty acids were typically selected as splitting criteria in classification and regression tree analyses, suggesting that the observed differences in fatty acid composition between the various groups of dolphins may be attributed to differences in diet.  相似文献

Bee bread is prepared from pollen sources and salivary secretions by honey bee workers to serves the nutritional purpose of colony members. However, changes in nutrient composition occurring in bee bread from the pollen sources including pollen patty are poorly understood. We, therefore, examined the nutrient contents of pollen patty, used as source pollen feed of honey bee colony, and bee bread prepared by honey bee from this source at different time interval. Results revealed that amino acid content was increased from pollen patty to bee bread but fatty acid content was decreased. Essential amino acids like valine, lysine, and nonessential amino acids such as proline and alanine increased significantly over time. Among fatty acids, oleic acid, linoleic acid and linolenic acid decreased significantly from pollen patty to bee bread. Minerals contents in bee bread did not show any significant change during the study period. These changes could be presumably justified due to addition of nectar, honey, gland secretions and also microbial symbionts which remains as a task of further study.  相似文献

The incorporation of exogenously supplied fatty acids, palmitic acid, palmitoleic acid, oleic acid and linoleic acid, was examined in the yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe at two growth temperatures, 20 °C and 30 °C. Fatty acids supplied to S. pombe in the growth medium were found to be preferentially incorporated into the cells, becoming a dominant species. The relative increase in exogenous fatty acids in cells came at the expense of endogenous oleic acid as a proportion of total fatty acids. Lowering the temperature at which the yeast were grown resulted in decreased levels of incorporation of the fatty acids palmitic acid, palmitoleic acid and linoleic acid compared to cells supplemented at 30 °C. In addition, the relative amount of the endogenously produced unsaturated fatty acid oleic acid, while greatly reduced compared to unsupplemented cells, was increased in cells supplemented with fatty acids at 20 °C compared to supplemented cells at 30 °C. The differential production of oleic acid in S. pombe cells indicates that regulation of unsaturated fatty acid levels, possibly by control of the stearoyl-CoA desaturase, is an important control point in membrane composition in response to temperature and diet in this species.  相似文献

Blubber fatty acid(s) (FA) signatures can provide accurate estimates of predator diets using quantitative FA signature analysis, provided that aspects of predator FA metabolism are taken into account. Because the intestinal absorption of dietary FA and their incorporation into chylomicrons (the primary transport lipoproteins for dietary FA in the blood) may influence the relationship between FA composition in the diet and adipose tissue, we investigated the metabolism of individual FA at these early stages of assimilation. We also investigated the capacity of chylomicron signatures to provide quantitative estimates of prey composition of an experimental meal. Six captive juvenile grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) were fed either 2.3 kg (n=3) or 4.6 kg (n=3) of Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus). Although chylomicron FA signatures resembled diet signatures at all samplings, absolute differences were smallest at 3-h post-feeding, when chylomicrons were likely largest and had the greatest ratio of triacylglycerol to phospholipid FA. Specific FA that differed significantly between diet and chylomicron signatures reflected either input from endogenous sources or loss through peroxisomal -oxidation. When these aspects of metabolism were accounted for, the quantitative predictions of diet composition generated using chylomicron signatures were extremely accurate, even when tested against 28 other prey items.  相似文献

We estimated the genetic parameters related to feed intake (FI), feed efficiency traits (including feed conversion ratio (FCR) and residual feed intake (RFI) of digestible crude protein (DCP) and total digestible nutrients (TDN)), beef marbling score (BMS), melting point of fat (MP) and fatty acid composition. Fat and meat (Musculus trapezius) samples were taken from the carcasses of 863 Japanese Black steers derived from 65 sires, for determination of the MP and fatty acid composition of the total lipid in intramuscular adipose tissue. Genetic parameters were estimated using uni- and bivariate animal models. In addition, pedigree information for 4841 animals was used. Heritability estimates for BMS, MP, individual fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), the ratio of saturated fatty acids to MUFA (MUS) and the ratio of elongation (ELONG) were generally high. The FI values of TDN and DCP were also high, but FCRs and RFIs of those were low (0.09 to 0.22). Genetic correlation of BMS with MP was -0.34 (favorable) and with C18:1, MUFA, MUS and ELONG values were 0.40, 0.28, 0.29 and 0.37, respectively (favorable). Genetic correlations of MP with C18:1, MUFA, MUS and ELONG were negative (also favorable) and high (-0.85, -0.98, -1.00 (-0.996) and -0.66, respectively). The correlation estimates for feed efficiency traits of DCP were quite similar to those of TDN. Genetic correlations of BMS with FCRs and RFIs of TDN and DCP were all positive (unfavorable; 0.21 to 0.51), and in particular, the correlations with RFIs of those were high. The correlations of C18:1, MUFA, MUS and ELONG with RFIs of TDN and DCP were positive (unfavorable) but low (0.06 to 0.17), whereas the corresponding correlations with FCRs of those were all negative (favorable; -0.38 to -0.10). These results suggest that the quantity and quality of beef fat can be simultaneously improved and that the quality of beef fat (fatty acid composition) can be improved directly or indirectly with MP. Furthermore, selecting MP or fatty acid traits does not significantly affect feed efficiency.  相似文献

The permeability-enhancing effects of the two surfactants, 1-palmitoyl-2-lyso-sn-gycero-3-phosphocholine (lysoPPC) and palmitic acid (PA), on lipid membranes that at physiological temperatures are in the gel, fluid, and liquid-ordered phases were determined using the concentration-dependent self-quenching properties of the hydrophilic marker, calcein. Adding lysoPPC to lipid membranes in the gel-phase induced a time-dependent calcein release curve that can be described by the sum of two exponentials, whereas PA induces a considerably more complex release curve. However, when lysoPPC and PA were added simultaneously in equimolar concentrations, a dramatic synergistic permeability-enhancing effect was observed. In contrast, when both lysoPPC and PA are added to liposomal membranes that are in the fluid or liquid-ordered phases, no effect on the transmembrane permeation of calcein was observed.  相似文献

The fatty acid composition of sperm affects the fertilization rate. The objective was to investigate the effects of dietary fish oil (as a source of n-3 fatty acids) on semen quality and sperm fatty acid composition in sheep. Eight Zandi fat-tailed rams were randomly allocated into two groups and fed either a control diet or a diet supplemented with fish oil. Both diets were isocaloric and isonitrogenous and were fed for 13 weeks, starting in the middle of the breeding season. Semen samples were collected weekly and their characteristics evaluated by standard methods, whereas samples collected at the start and end of the study were assessed (gas chromatography) for sperm lipid composition. Mean (±s.e.m.) sperm concentrations (4.3 × 109 ± 1.3 × 108 v. 3.9 × 109 ± 1.3 × 108 sperm/ml and percentages of motile (77.25 ± 3.34 v. 60.8 ± 3.34) and progressively motile sperm (74.13 ± 1.69 v. 62.69 ± 1.69) were significantly higher in the fish oil group than control. Dietary fish oil increased the proportion of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6 n-3) in sperm fatty acid composition. We concluded that feeding fish oil as a source of n-3 fatty acids attenuated seasonal declines in semen quality in rams, perhaps through increased DHA in sperm.  相似文献
