The high emetic response (HER) strain and low emetic response (LER) strain of musk shrews (Suncus murinus) markedly differ in the emetic reflex in adults. However, there have been no studies on young musk shrews. We gave a shaking stimulus to young musk shrews aged 10 days or more that were obtained by mating within each strain and observed emetic responses. In the HER strain, no animal aged 10 days vomited, but vomiting was observed in 1 of 5 animals each aged 12 and 14 days, 2 of 5 animals aged 16 days, and all animals aged 18 days or more. In the LER strain, no vomiting was observed until the age of 14 days, but at the age of 16 days or more, 1 or 2 of 5 animals at each age vomited. After stimulation, activated neurons of the dorsal vagal complex and the dorsal reticular formation of the nucleus ambiguus (Amb) were examined by Fos immunohistochemistry. This morphometric study demonstrated that the numbers of Fos-positive neurons in the nucleus of the solitary tract and the dorsal reticular formation of the Amb were significantly larger in the animals that vomited in the HER strain than animals that did not vomit in the LER strain. We suggest that neurons in these regions are involved in emetic responses, as is the case in adult animals.  相似文献

Forty-eight ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) were individually head-shielded and radiated with bilateral 60Co gamma radiation at 100 cGy min-1 at doses ranging between 49 and 601 cGy. The emetic threshold was observed at 69 cGy, the ED50 was calculated at 77 cGy, and 100% incidence of emesis occurred at 201 cGy. With increasing doses of radiation, the latency to first emesis after radiation decreased dramatically, whereas the duration of the prodromal period increased. Two other sets of experiments suggest that dopaminergic mechanisms play a minor role in radiation-induced emesis in the ferret. Twenty-two animals were injected either intravenously or subcutaneously with 30 to 300 micrograms/kg of apomorphine. Fewer than 50% of the animals vomited to 300 micrograms/kg apomorphine; central dopaminergic receptor activation was apparent at all doses. Another eight animals received 1 mg/kg domperidone prior to either 201 (n = 4) or 401 (n = 4) cGy radiation and their emetic responses were compared with NaCl-injected-irradiated controls (n = 8). At 201 cGy, domperidone significantly reduced only the total time in emetic behavior. At 401 cGy, domperidone had no salutary effect on radiation-induced emesis. The emetic responses of the ferret to radiation and apomorphine are compared with these responses in other vomiting species.  相似文献

The inhibitory effect of halothane on the emetic response in the ferret   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Emesis and nausea are often associated with anaesthesia and continue to be a common clinical problem. Past clinical studies have demonstrated that halothane produces a higher incidence of vomiting compared with other anaesthetics, but some investigators have described an antiemetic effect. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of various doses of halothane on the emetic response in the decerebrate ferret. Following a control emetic response, a maximum of six increasing cumulative concentrations of halothane were delivered. At the end of each delivery period, the supradiaphragmatic vagal communicating branch, which has been shown to reproducibly elicit vomiting, was electrically stimulated and the emetic response was monitored. An increase in halothane concentration produced a marked depression of tongue, abdominal muscle, and diaphragm EMG activity as well as a decrease in central venous pressure. Licking, a prodromal response comparable to nausea in the human, appeared to be most sensitive. An increase in latency of the emetic response occurred as the concentration of halothane was increased. All phases of the response were observed at concentrations below 0.6 vol% halothane. At 0.6 vol% halothane, 75% of the animals vomited. At higher concentrations, the emetic response was completely abolished. One hour post-halothane, all latencies had returned to near control values. The methods utilized in this study provided a model that was not complicated by a large number of variables usually present in clinical studies. These data demonstrate that halothane exerts an inhibitory, concentration-dependent, and reversible effect on the emetic response in the ferret and provide further support that halothane alone does not possess emetic properties at clinical properties at clinical concentrations.  相似文献

Effects of various types of motion stimuli were compared to investigate optimum method to elicit motion sickness and adaptation in Suncus murinus (suncus). Three different direction of shaking in the horizontal plane, back and forth, right and left and revolving, induced emetic response to the similar extent. However, vertical shaking was far less effective in inducing motion sickness. Mild and severe horizontal shaking (15 min per day) was continued for 14 days and emetic response to standard motion stimulus was compared before and after the training. The severe daily acceleration strongly depressed the susceptibility to motion stimulus. The mild acceleration which was not emetic stimulus in itself also remarkably attenuated the vomiting response to standard motion stimulus. These results indicate that 1) the emetic responsiveness of the suncus does not depend on the modes of shaking as long as the direction is in the horizontal plane, 2) the suncus is relatively refractory to the vertical linear acceleration and 3) the adaptation to motion stimulus does not develop on the latest peripheral steps of the vomiting reflex pathways.  相似文献

The vomiting (emetic) reflex is documented in numerous mammalian species, including primates and carnivores, yet laboratory rats and mice appear to lack this response. It is unclear whether these rodents do not vomit because of anatomical constraints (e.g., a relatively long abdominal esophagus) or lack of key neural circuits. Moreover, it is unknown whether laboratory rodents are representative of Rodentia with regards to this reflex. Here we conducted behavioral testing of members of all three major groups of Rodentia; mouse-related (rat, mouse, vole, beaver), Ctenohystrica (guinea pig, nutria), and squirrel-related (mountain beaver) species. Prototypical emetic agents, apomorphine (sc), veratrine (sc), and copper sulfate (ig), failed to produce either retching or vomiting in these species (although other behavioral effects, e.g., locomotion, were noted). These rodents also had anatomical constraints, which could limit the efficiency of vomiting should it be attempted, including reduced muscularity of the diaphragm and stomach geometry that is not well structured for moving contents towards the esophagus compared to species that can vomit (cat, ferret, and musk shrew). Lastly, an in situ brainstem preparation was used to make sensitive measures of mouth, esophagus, and shoulder muscular movements, and phrenic nerve activity–key features of emetic episodes. Laboratory mice and rats failed to display any of the common coordinated actions of these indices after typical emetic stimulation (resiniferatoxin and vagal afferent stimulation) compared to musk shrews. Overall the results suggest that the inability to vomit is a general property of Rodentia and that an absent brainstem neurological component is the most likely cause. The implications of these findings for the utility of rodents as models in the area of emesis research are discussed.  相似文献

Staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) produced by Staphylococcus aureus are the most recognizable causative agents of emetic food poisoning in humans. New types of SEs and SE‐like (SEl) toxins have been reported. Several epidemiological investigations have shown that the SEs and SEl genes, particularly, SEK, SEL, SEM, SEN and SEO genes, are frequently detected in strains isolated from patients with food poisoning. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the emetic activity of recently identified SEs using a small emetic animal model, the house musk shrew. The emetic activity of these SEs in house musk shrews was evaluated by intraperitoneal administration and emetic responses, including the number of shrews that vomited, emetic frequency and latency of vomiting were documented. It was found that SEs induce emetic responses in these animals. This is the first time to demonstrate that SEK, SEL, SEM, SEN and SEO possess emetic activity in the house musk shrew.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of fasting and feeding on the fast‐start escape swimming performance of juvenile southern catfish Silurus meridionalis, a sit‐and‐wait forager that encounters extreme fasting and famine frequently during its lifespan. Ten to 30 days of fasting resulted in no significant change in most of the variables measured in the fast‐start response except a 20–30% decrease in the escape distance during the first 120 ms (D120ms) relative to the control group (48 h after feeding). The ratio of the single‐bend (SB) response (lower energetic expenditure) to the double‐bend (DB) response increased significantly from 0% in the control group to 75 and 82·5% in the 20 and 30 day fasting groups, respectively. Satiated feeding (25% of body mass) resulted in a significantly lower (36·6%) maximum linear velocity (Vmax) and a significantly lower (43·3%) D120ms than in non‐fed fish (control group, 48 h after feeding). Half‐satiated feeding (12·5% of body mass), however, showed no significant effects on any of the measured variables of the fast‐start response relative to control fish. It is suggested that the increase in the ratio of SB:DB responses with fasting in S. meridionalis may reflect a trade‐off between energy conservation and maintaining high Vmax, while variables of fast‐start performance were more sensitive to feeding than fasting might be an adaptive strategy to their foraging mode and food availability in their habitat.  相似文献

Cereulide-producing Bacillus cereus can cause an emetic type of food-borne disease that mimics the symptoms provoked by Staphylococcus aureus. Based on the recently discovered genetic background for cereulide formation, a novel 5' nuclease (TaqMan) real-time PCR assay was developed to provide a rapid and sensitive method for the specific detection of emetic B. cereus in food. The TaqMan assay includes an internal amplification control and primers and a probe designed to target a highly specific part of the cereulide synthetase genes. Additionally, a specific SYBR green I assay was developed and extended to create a duplex SYBR green I assay for the one-step identification and discrimination of the two emesis-causing food pathogens B. cereus and S. aureus. The inclusivity and exclusivity of the assay were assessed using a panel of 100 strains, including 23 emetic B. cereus and 14 S. aureus strains. Different methods for DNA isolation from artificially contaminated foods were evaluated, and established real-time assays were used to analyze two recent emetic food poisonings in southern Germany. One of the food-borne outbreaks included 17 children visiting a day care center who vomited after consuming a reheated rice dish, collapsed, and were hospitalized; the other case concerned a single food-poisoning incident occurring after consumption of cauliflower. Within 2 h, the etiological agent of these food poisonings was identified as emetic B. cereus by using the real-time PCR assay.  相似文献

A dose-response relationship was established in normal unanesthetized cats for emetic incidence, latency to onset of vomiting, and duration of emetic activity over a period of 24 h after whole-body exposure to 60Co radiation at selected doses between 7.5 and 90 Gy. Each episode of vomiting, i.e., retching and expulsion, was recorded oscillographically as its characteristic intrathoracic pressure waveform by means of a catheter inserted some days before into the superior vena cava. The gamma-radiation dose of 45 Gy evoked vomiting optimally with an incidence of 92% and an average onset time of 98 min. When administered to animals prepared chronically with surgical ablation of the area postrema, the same dose of radiation evoked vomiting in four of five test cases and with an average time to onset that was not by either measure significantly different from normal. Vomiting was also elicited in all of six normal cats exposed to an intestinal dose of 45 Gy X radiation with the head shielded. The same form of irradiation evoked vomiting in two of three chronically postremectomized cats. Successful ablation of the area postrema was determined functionally by emetic refractoriness to an injection of digitalis and confirmed for completeness by histological examination. It is concluded that the area postrema is not an essential element in the reflex mechanism of radiation-induced vomiting and, therefore, no physiological basis exists for dependence on a centrally acting chemogenic factor in radioemesis.  相似文献

This study shows that in African catfish Clarias gariepinus feed intake ( I F) is stimulated by the presence of conspecifics resulting in higher I F and growth rate. The feeding duration and the frequency of feeding acts were lower in isolated fish as compared with non-isolated fish, indicating a decreased feeding motivation when fish are held individually. Isolation per se , however, seems not to act as a stressor in the short-term or to affect the stress response, probably because periods of isolation are part of the African catfish lifestyle.  相似文献

The ability of channel catfish to develop antibody responses to Edwardsiella ictaluri was evaluated. Fish were produced and reared under specific pathogen free (SPF) conditions. At the ages of 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks and 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 months post-hatch, a group of these naive fish were given a primary immersion exposure to E. ictaluri (mean doses of 6·4×104 cfu ml−1of tank water). Each group received a secondary immersion exposure 4 weeks after the primary exposure and were sampled 2 weeks after each exposure. Control groups were exposed to sterile culture medium. Specific antibody titres were first detected in fish exposed at 4 weeks post-hatch at an average weight of 85 mg. A secondary response was first demonstrated by fry that received a primary exposure at 4 weeks post-hatch and a secondary exposure at 8 weeks post-hatch. However, a true boosting effect was first demonstrated in fish that received their primary exposure at 2 months of age. Fish given a primary exposure before 4 weeks of age and a secondary exposure failed to produce a significant antibody response, even though they were the same age at secondary exposure as fish that produced strong antibody responses upon primary exposure. This phenomenon suggests that immunological tolerance was induced and indicates that channel catfish may not be capable of generating a humoral immune response before four weeks of age.  相似文献

The experiment aimed to examine the effect of changing feeds on individual feed intake and feeding and dominance ranks in groups of African catfish. Following feeding on a commercial control feed (Con.) groups ( n  = 3) of 6 catfish were either fed fish meal (FM42) or maize gluten (MG32) based feeds for five days before being switched to the other feed for five days. Feed intake was significantly lower on FM42 than on Con. or MG32 and occurred whether FM42 was fed first or second after Con. Thus, the effect of changing the feed was feed specific. Stability (Kendall's coefficient of concordance) of feeding rank was higher in 5 out of the 6 groups when they were fed MG35 than when fed FM42. Six types of agonistic behaviours were identified and used to assign dominance rank, there were no correlations between dominance and feeding ranks in groups. This was probably due to non‐linear hierarchies with one dominant fish in each group. There were significant correlations between dominance and feeding ranks for combined data over the initial period ( r  = −0·51, P  < 0·005, n  = 36) and when analyzed for the two feeds. Correlations were stronger for MG35 ( r  = −0·41, P  < 0·01) than for FM42 ( r  = −0·33, P  < 0·05). The experiment demonstrated that the introduction of a novel feed can, but does not necessarily, alter feed intake. Of greater significance is the indication that when feed intake decreased the feeding hierarchy and its relationship to dominance rank became less stable.  相似文献

After a pre-prandial period of starvation or feeding with unlabelled food, 0+ salmon parr (0.8–11.7 g) were fed a test meal of iron particle labelled food and subsequently were again either starved or fed unlabelled food. The quantity of labelled food consumed and the evacuation rate was determined by serial radiographs. In fish of all sizes, pre-prandial starvation causes a larger test meal (as a percentage of body weight) to be consumed when compared to pre-prandially fed fish. In addition, pre-prandial starvation results in relatively larger meals as a percentage of body weight being taken by smaller compared to larger fish. This result was not evident for pre-prandially fed fish. Evacuation rate was unrelated to body size irrespective of feeding history. Post-prandial starvation decreased evacuation rate but this effect was inversely related to the quantity of food consumed. Larger meals were not evacuated differently from smaller meals if feeding occurred post-prandially, irrespective of pre-prandial starvation.  相似文献

用维生素C含量为38、364 和 630 mg /kg 的三种饲料饲喂初体重为23.19±0.58g的长吻鮠8个月,实验结果表明,38mg/kg Vc饲料组饲喂的长吻鮠表现出了典型的Vc缺乏症状:体色发黑,脊椎侧弯,鳍边由开始的萎缩直到腐烂;贫血;特定生长率显著降低(p<0.05)。并且38mg/kg Vc饲料组长吻鮠的生理指标也受到影响:血清溶菌酶活性显著下降(p<0.05);肝脏的SOD活性及MDA含量均显著升高(p<0.05);血清皮质醇没有显著差异(p>0.05);但各处理组长吻鮠肝脏中均未检测到诱导型HSP70的存在。因此,相对于皮质醇和HSP70,血清溶菌酶、肝脏SOD活性、肝脏MDA含量以及血液理化指标(血红细胞数及血红蛋白)更能反映出Vc缺乏下长吻鮠的生理状态。  相似文献

Sharptooth catfish Clarias gariepinus was introduced into the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, in 1976 and there are concerns about its possible negative impacts on native biota. This study investigated its trophic impact by examining its feeding habits. Stomach content and stable isotope analyses were compared from three localities—the Great Fish River, Sundays River and Glen Melville Dam. Stomach content analysis indicated a catholic diet dominated by fish particularly in all localities. Spatially, however, the diets revealed differences based on the dominance of macrophytes that were only present in the rivers, and aquatic invertebrates that appeared more diverse within the Great Fish River compared to other localities. By contrast, stable isotopes revealed a more generalised feeding pattern with no clear dominance of particular prey. Stable isotopes further showed that the catfish was a complex predator, with large catfish being top predators whereas smaller size groups appeared to feed lower in the food chain. An ontogenetic shift in diet was evident, with small fish predominantly consuming aquatic invertebrates and shifting towards fish with increasing size. High dietary overlap suggests the potential risk associated catfish feeding, especially the potential of piscivory by small catfish that are more likely to persist in shallow and marginal where endangered indigenous minnows occur. The alteration of environmental conditions, especially flow by inter-basin water transfer (IBWT) schemes, was inferred to have had a probable influence its invasion success. Occurrence of other invaders, which was facilitated by the IBWT together with the catfish, posits the risk of invasion meltdown within the study systems.  相似文献

2004年12月至2005年3月在北京十渡地区的二渡和涞水县野三坡两地采用目标取样法对越冬期黑鹳(Ciconia nigra)的取食行为进行了观察。每星期观察一次,累计观察246 h。黑鹳觅食处水深5~40 cm左右,以鱼类和螺类为食,其中鱼类占90%以上;平均每小时进食20次左右,黑鹳在两个研究地点取食的食物没有差别(P=0.439>0.05)。黑鹳取食长度小于4 cm的鱼类最多,占取食总次数的65.0%。成体和亚成体对不同大小鱼类的取食比例无差异(小于4 cm的鱼类,P=0.513>0.05;5~8 cm,P=0.979>0.05;≥9 cm,P=0.657>0.05)。在成体与亚成体对不同体型鱼类的搜寻时间中,成体搜寻较小食物的时间短于亚成体(P=0.008<0.05)。对食物的处理时间随着鱼类大小递增而延长,亚成体在处理较小食物上花费的时间相对较长(小于4 cm的鱼P=0.002<0.05;5~8cm的鱼P=0.001<0.05),表明亚成体的取食经验不足。保护越冬期黑鹳的最佳对策是减少对其取食活动和取食地的人为干扰。  相似文献

The foraging behavior of four fish species—bream, Abramis brama (L.); roach, Rutilus rutilus (L.); crucian carp, Carassius auratus (L.); and a tropical catfish, Corydoras paleatus (Jenins)—differing in their degrees of morphological specialization for benthic foraging has been studied. In the modeling of a stable environment, fish encountered a constant pattern of food location, while under unstable conditions, food location varied between subsequent trials. In contrast to an unstable environment, after long exposures to constant conditions, there was an increase in motor activity not associated with foraging and the feeding rate fell. This drop in feeding rate resulted in decreased growth rates in the studied fish.  相似文献
