In an earlier study, we found no effects of 60 Hz electric and magnetic fields (EMF) from a 500 kV transmission line on serum melatonin patterns or on puberty in ten female Suffolk lambs (Ovis aries). We conducted a larger replicate study of 15 lambs exposed to a mean electric field of 6.3 kV/m and a mean magnetic field of 3.77 μT and 15 controls exposed to EMF two orders of magnitude weaker than in the line area. The replicate produced essentially the same results as our previous study. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The US National Electrical Code's (NEC) requirement to ground a home's electrical service to the residential water line results in a voltage between the water line and earth, V W-E. The voltage may result from ground return current that flows into the earth via the water line or from inductive effects from other sources of magnetic fields, such as transmission lines. This voltage can, in turn, serve as a source for Vbath, the voltage between the water fixtures and conductive drain pipes sunk into the earth beneath a residence. Vbath can be a source of contact current exposure to a child touching a water fixture while bathing. Previous research has suggested that exposure to these currents could be the basis for the association between power-frequency magnetic fields and childhood leukemia. In this study, we assessed the association between measured Vbath and VW-E with the average spot-measured magnetic field, Bavg, in a sample of 191 single-family residences in the Denver metropolitan area. This area was the source of cases and controls for previous studies of electric and magnetic field (EMF) and childhood cancer. The association of both Vbath and VW-E with Bavg had upward trends across magnetic field strata (<0.1 microT (reference); 0.1-<0.3 microT; and > or = 0.3 microT). In addition, VW-E was associated with Vbath. Without further study, these results cannot be applied to multi-dwelling residences or to electrical systems prevalent in other nations. Nonetheless, when combined with the finding that contact current is a far more plausible candidate than the residential magnetic field for mediating biological effects on the basis of comparative dose to bone marrow, these associations indicate that contact current exposure deserves further study.  相似文献

To study the effects of exposure to extremely low frequency (ELF) electric and magnetic fields (EMF) on the estrous cycle of dairy cows under short-day photoperiod, 16 non-lactating, non-pregnant Holstein cows were exposed to a vertical electric field of 10 kV/m and a horizontal magnetic field of 30 microT for 16 h per day in a cross-over design consisting of two sequences. Each sequence included three periods, and each period corresponded to the duration of one estrous cycle. All animals were maintained under short photoperiod (8 h light/16 h dark) during the trial. Exposure to EMF had an impact on the duration of a complete estrous cycle (P<0.01) and on the duration of the luteal phase (P<0.01). The mean duration of one cycle was 19.5+/-0.4 for the control and 21.3+/-0.4 days for the exposed animals, respectively. The mean duration of the luteal phase was 15.4+/-0.4 days for the control and 17.2+/-0.4 days for the exposed group. The total area under the progesterone (P(4)) curve, the amplitude of the curve or the slope of the P(4) rise at the onset of the luteal phase were not affected by EMF exposure. Results indicate that exposure to EMF may increase the duration of the estrous cycle.  相似文献

An exposure chamber was designed to study the effects of electric and magnetic fields (EMF) on oestrous cycles, hormonal profile during gestation, pineal function, quantity and quality of milk production, feed intake, and central nervous system of dairy cattle. The chamber was 15 x 10 x 3 m; and the control system was fully computerized so that the field intensities can be varied and monitored continuously, on site or remotely. During exposure to EMF, milk production, feed consumption, and health were monitored closely and blood and cerebral spinal fluid were continuously sampled. The chamber characteristics allow use of a wide range of exposure such as electric fields (0-30 kV/m) and magnetic fields (0-100 microT) at frequencies ranging from 45 to 3000 Hz.  相似文献

Thymus plays an important role in the immune system and can be modulated by numerous environmental factors, including electromagnetic fields (EMF). The present study has been undertaken with the aim to investigate the role of long-term exposure to extremely low frequency electric and magnetic fields (ELF-EMF) on thymocytes of rats housed in a regular dark/light cycle or under continuous light. Male Sprague-Dawley rats, 2 months old, were exposed or sham exposed for 8 months to 50-Hz sinusoidal EMF at two levels of field strength (1 kV/m, 5 microT and 5 kV/m, 100 microT, respectively). Thymus from adult animals exhibits signs of gradual atrophy mainly due to collagen deposition and fat substitution. This physiological involution may be accelerated by continuous light exposure that induces a massive death of thymocytes. The concurrent exposure to continuous light and to ELF-EMF did not change significantly the rate of mitoses compared to sham-exposed rats, whereas the amount of cell death was significantly increased, also in comparison with animals exposed to EMF in a 12-h dark-light cycle. In conclusion, long-term exposure to ELF-EMF, in animals housed under continuous light, may reinforce the alterations due to a photic stress, suggesting that, in vivo, stress and ELF-EMF exposure can act in synergy determining a more rapid involution of the thymus and might be responsible for an increased susceptibility to the potentially hazardous effects of ELF-EMF.  相似文献

A study was conducted to determine whether an opioid tonus inhibitory of LH secretion is present in underfed prepubertal sheep. Ten Suffolk ewe lambs were subjected to food restriction during 60 days. During this period they were allowed to pasture only 2 hours per day while control ewe lambs were allowed for 10 hours. Body weight and plasma blood levels of glucose, urea and total proteins were measured weekly. At the end of this period, an intravenous injection of Naloxone (NAL, 1.5 mg/kg BW) was given to control and underfed animals followed 60 min later by an intravenous injection of LHRH to test the pituitary responsiveness. Underfed animals did not show an increase in plasma LH while control animals presented a rise from 0.28 +/- 0.08 to 2.02 +/- 0.6 ng/ml after the NAL stimulus (P less than 0.05). The response to LHRH was similar in both group of animals. Basal plasma levels of insulin were lower in underfed ewe lambs than in control animals (P less than 0.05). Underfed animals were placed on plain feeding with a schedule similar to control lambs for 30 days and the same experiment was repeated. During this occasion, NAL increased plasma LH concentration in both group of lambs. Levels of plasma insulin were not different in both groups. The lack of effect of NAL on LH secretion in food restricted ewe lambs suggests that the opioid modulation of LH secretion is absent by underfeeding in female prepubertal sheep.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) have been demonstrated to enhance mammalian peripheral nerve regeneration in vitro and in vivo. Using an EMF signal shown to enhance neurite outgrowth in vitro, we tested this field in vivo using three different amplitudes. The rat sciatic nerve was crushed. Whole body exposure was performed for 4 h/day for 5 days in a 96-turn solenoid coil controlled by a signal generator and power amplifier. The induced electric field at the target tissue consisted of a bipolar rectangular pulse, having 1 and 0.3 ms durations in each polarity, respectively. Pulse repetition rate was 2 per second. By varying the current, the coils produced fields consisting of sham (no current) and peak magnetic fields of 0.03 mT, 0.3 mT, and 3 mT, corresponding to peak induced electric fields of 1, 10, and 100 microV/cm, respectively, at the tissue target. Walking function was assessed over 43 days using video recording and measurement of the 1-5 toe-spread, using an imaging program. Comparing injured to uninjured hind limbs, mean responses were evaluated using a linear mixed statistical model. There was no difference found in recovery of the toe-spread function between any EMF treatments compared to sham.  相似文献

From 2013 to 2018, in‐situ measurements of radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic fields (EMF) and extremely low‐frequency (ELF) electric and magnetic fields in 317 existing and under‐construction children's playground facilities, in 16 municipalities all over Greece, were carried out by the Greek Atomic Energy Commission (EEAE). These measurements were conducted following legislative framework established in 2009, which requires that compliance with the established exposure limits for EMFs should be verified in playground areas. The results are presented by the value of the electric field (E) and exposure ratio (Λ) for the RF EMF, as well as the value of the electric field (E) and magnetic flux density (B) for the ELF electric and magnetic fields. Statistical analysis tools were applied on measurement data and conclusions have been made, taking into consideration: (i) environment type (urban/suburban), and (ii) vicinity to any transmitting installations. Measurement results correspond to the typical EMF background levels for each environment type. Concerning the environment type, RF EMF, and ELF electric/magnetic field measurements reveal no differentiation between urban and suburban environments. Electromagnetic fields (EMF) such as those from electric power transmission and distribution lines (50/60 Hz) have been associated with increased risk of childhood leukemia, cancer of the nervous system, and lymphomas. Several in vitro studies on EMF effects were performed to clarify the existing controversies, define the risks, and determine the possible mechanisms of adverse effects. In some of these reports, the effects were related to other mechanisms of carcinogenesis. Modification in cell proliferation was observed after EMF exposure and a few reports on cytotoxic effects have also been published. This limited review gives an overview of the current results of scientific research regarding in vitro studies on the effects of power line frequency EMF, but also cell biological mechanisms and their potential involvement in genotoxicity and cytotoxicity are discussed. Cell cycle control and signal transduction processes are included to elucidate the biochemical background of possible interactions. Exposure to EMF has been also linked to the incidence of leukemia and other tumors in some epidemiological studies and is considered as "possibly carcinogenic to humans", but there is no well-established biological mechanism that explains such a relation. Furthermore, EMF is also shown as a stimulus for immune relevant cells (e.g., macrophages) to release free radicals. It is known that chronic activation of macrophages is associated with the onset of phagocytosis and leads to increased formation of reactive oxygen species, which themselves may cause DNA damage and are suggested to lead to carcinogenesis. To demonstrate a possible interaction between EMF and cellular systems, we present a mechanistic model describing cell activation as a major importance for cellular response.  相似文献

Rambouillet sheep were selected for high or low reproductive rate based on an index of reproductive rate, reproductive INDEX = dam's total lifetime lambs born/(age in years-1). Selected ewes were first born in 1969. A random bred control line was established from the remaining foundation ewes with the first ewes born in 1973. Genetic variances were estimated with REML procedures for reproductive index and number of lambs born or weaned either per ewe exposed for breeding or per ewe lambing. Heritability of reproductive index was 0.26. Heritability for number of lambs born were 0.11 and 0.12 and for number of lambs weaned were 0.04 and 0.04 per ewe exposed for breeding and per ewe lambing, respectively. Breeding values for the reproductive index were estimated using the full animal model (BLUP) with the complete numerator relationship matrix on reproductive index, with fixed effect of year of birth of ewe and breeding values for number of lambs born or weaned either per ewe exposed for breeding or per ewe lambing, estimated with the fixed effects of year of birth of ewe and age of ewe and the random effect of permanent environmental effect among repeated lambing records. Genetic change was estimated as the regression of breeding value for reproductive index and number of lambs born or weaned either per ewe exposed for breeding or per ewe lambing on year of birth of the ewe. High and low lines both responded to selection for reproductive index as compared to the control line (P<0.01). The high line increased at a rate of b = 0.0134 ± 0.0006 reproductive index units and the low line decreased at a rate of b = − 0.0098 ± 0.0005 reproductive index units per year. Response to selection for reproductive index resulted in b = − 0.0074 ± 0.0007 and b = 0.0163 ± 0.0006 lambs per ewe exposed for breeding, and b = − 0.0041 ± 0.0002 and b = 0.0075 ± 0.0002 lambs weaned per ewe exposed for breeding in the low and high lines, respectively. There was a greater response to selection in the high line compared to the low line. These results indicated that the reproductive index did respond to selection.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of either a 17-day exposure to vasectomised rams or a short-term exposure to entire rams on ewe lamb reproductive performance. Seven hundred and twenty-one Romney ewe lambs, 7–9 months of age, were randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups. Treatments included exposure to vasectomised rams for 17 days prior to breeding, exposure to entire rams for 4 or 2 days prior to breeding or not being exposed to either vasectomised or entire rams. Unteased ewe lambs and those exposed to entire rams for either 2 and 4 days were less (P < 0.05) likely to be mated in the first 17 days of breeding only and pregnant in the first 17 days of breeding compared to ewe lambs exposed to vasectomised rams for a full 17 days pre-breeding. Ewe lambs exposed to entire rams for 2 days were more (P < 0.05) likely to be mated in the first 8 days of breeding, mated in the first 17 days of breeding only and pregnant in the first 17 days of breeding compared to unteased ewe lambs. Therefore, a short-term exposure to entire rams can be used to induce breeding activity in ewe lambs, although it is not as effective as a full 17-day exposure to vasectomised rams.  相似文献

Two experiments were carried out to assess the effects of electric and magnetic fields (EMF) on blood thyroxine (T4) in dairy cattle. In experiment 1, 16 lactating pregnant Holstein cows were exposed to 10 kV/m, 30 microTesla (microT) EMF. The animals were divided into two groups of eight animals each. Each group was exposed to EMF according to one of two treatment sequences of three periods of 28 days each. Sequence 1 was EMF OFF-ON-OFF and sequence 2 was EMF ON-OFF-ON. During the last day of each treatment period, blood samples were collected every 4 h for 24 h to estimate T4 plasma concentrations. In experiment 2, 16 nonlactating, nonpregnant, multiparous Holsteins were exposed to 10 kV/m, 30 microT EMF. The animals were divided into two groups of eight animals each. Each group was exposed to EMF according to one of the two treatment sequences described above, except that each period amounted to the number of days corresponding to one estrous cycle. During treatment, blood samples were collected every other day for T4 analysis. In both experiments, the light cycle emulated a short photoperiod (8 h light/16 h dark). During the ON periods, the animals were exposed to EMF for 16 h, 8 h of the light period plus the first 8 h of during the dark period. In experiment 1, exposed animals did not have any change in T4 plasma concentrations due to treatment (P = .0968), but, the time of sample collection revealed a significant difference (P = .0012). In experiment 2, the effect of period (P = .0009) and the treatment by days interaction (P = .0003) were statistically significant. We conclude that a worst case scenario exposure of dairy cattle to 10 kV/m, 30 microT EMF influences, in a moderate fashion, the blood levels of thyroxine.  相似文献

Sixteen multiparous nonpregnant lactating Holstein cows (each weighing 662 ± 65 kg in 150.4 ±40 day of lactation) were confined to wooden metabolic cages with 12:12 h light:dark cycle during the experiment. The cows were divided into two sequences of eight cows each and exposed to electric and magnetic fields (EMF) in an exposure chamber. This chamber produced a vertical electric field of 10 kV/m and a uniform horizontal magnetic field of 30 μT at 60 Hz. One sequence was exposed for three estrous cycles of 24 to 27 days. During the first estrous cycle, the electric and magnetic fields were off; during the second estrous cycle, they were on; and during the third estrous cycle, they were off. The second sequence was also exposed for three 24 to 26 days estrous cycles, but the exposure to the fields was reversed (first estrous cycle, on; second estrous cycle, off; third estrous cycle, on). The length of each exposure period (21 to 27 days) varied according to the estrous cycle length. No differences were detected in plasma progesterone concentrations and area under the progesterone curve during estrous cycles between EMF nonexposed and exposed periods (2.28 ±0.17 and 2.25 ± 0.17; and 24.5 ± 1.9 vs. 26.4 ± 1.9 ng/ml, respectively). However, estrous cycle length, determined by the presence of a functional corpus luteum detected by concentrations of progesterone equal to or more than 1 ng/ml plasma, was shorter in nonexposed cows than when they were exposed to EMF (22.0 ± 0.9 vs. 25.3 ± 1.4 days). The aim of the current double-blind studies was to partially replicate the studies by Krause et al. [2000ab, 2004] and to further investigate the possible effects of electromagnetic fields (EMF) emitted by mobile phones (MP) on the event-related desynchronisation/synchronisation (ERD/ERS) EEG (electroencephalogram) responses during cognitive processing. Two groups, both consisting of 36 male participants, were recruited. One group performed an auditory memory task and the other performed a visual working memory task in six exposure conditions: SHAM (no EMF), CW (continuous wave EMF) and PM (pulse modulated EMF) during both left- and right-side exposure, while the EEG was recorded. In line with our previous studies, we observed that the exposure to EMF had modest effects on brain oscillatory responses in the alpha frequency range ( approximately 8-12 Hz) and had no effects on the behavioural measures. The effects on the EEG were, however, varying, unsystematic and inconsistent with previous reports. We conclude that the effects of EMF on brain oscillatory responses may be subtle, variable and difficult to replicate for unknown reasons.  相似文献

A system is described that uses an oscillating magnetic field to produce power-frequency electric fields with strengths in excess of those produced in an animal or human standing under a high-voltage electric-power transmission line. In contrast to other types of exposure systems capable of generating fields of this size, no electrodes are placed in the conducting growth media: the possibility of electrode contamination of the exposed suspension is thereby eliminated. Electric fields in the range 0.02–3.5 V/m can be produced in a cell culture with total harmonic distortions less than 1.5%. The magnetic field used to produce electric fields for exposure is largely confined within a closed ferromagnetic circuit, and experimental and control cells are exposed to leakage magnetic flux densities less than 5 μT. The temperatures of the experimental and control cell suspensions are held fixed within ±0.1°C by a water bath. Special chambers were developed to hold cell cultures during exposure and sham exposure. Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells incubated in these chambers grew for at least 48 h and had population doubling times of 16–17 h, approximately the same as for CHO cells grown under standard cell-culture conditions.  相似文献

The influence of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) devices at high field strengths on living tissues is unknown. We investigated the effects of a 3-tesla electromagnetic field (EMF) on the biosynthetic activity of bovine articular cartilage. Bovine articular cartilage was obtained from juvenile and adult animals. Whole joints or cartilage explants were subjected to a pulsed 3-tesla EMF; controls were left unexposed. Synthesis of sulfated glycosaminoglycans (sGAGs) was measured by using [35S]sulfate incorporation; mRNA encoding the cartilage markers aggrecan and type II collagen, as well as IL-1β, were analyzed by RT–PCR. Furthermore, effects of the 3-tesla EMF were determined over the course of time directly after exposure (day 0) and at days 3 and 6. In addition, the influence of a 1.5-tesla EMF on cartilage sGAG synthesis was evaluated. Chondrocyte cell death was assessed by staining with Annexin V and TdT-mediated dUTP nick end labelling (TUNEL). Exposure to the EMF resulted in a significant decrease in cartilage macromolecule synthesis. Gene expression of both aggrecan and IL-1β, but not of collagen type II, was reduced in comparison with controls. Staining with Annexin V and TUNEL revealed no evidence of cell death. Interestingly, chondrocytes regained their biosynthetic activity within 3 days after exposure, as shown by proteoglycan synthesis rate and mRNA expression levels. Cartilage samples exposed to a 1.5-tesla EMF remained unaffected. Although MRI devices with a field strength of more than 1.5 T provide a better signal-to-noise ratio and thereby higher spatial resolution, their high field strength impairs the biosynthetic activity of articular chondrocytes in vitro. Although this decrease in biosynthetic activity seems to be transient, articular cartilage exposed to high-energy EMF may become vulnerable to damage.  相似文献

Eighteen fine-wool ewe lambs produced by mature, conventionally fed dams and 21 similar offspring from sewage-fed ewes were randomly allotted at weaning to one of two groups. Half of the lambs from each maternal diet group received a conventional (18% protein) diet during the growing phase while the remainder was fed the conventional diet plus 7% undigested, irradiated sewage solids (18% protein). At the end of the 147-day growing period and just before a fall breeding season, conventionally fed ewe lambs were switched to a control diet (12% protein) suitable for mature ewes and sewage-fed ewe lambs began receiving the control diet plus 7% sewage solids. Animals received these diets for two years. Maternal sewage consumption did not influence performance of F1 ewe lambs. By the beginning of the first breeding season, controls were heavier (P<0.01) than were animals receiving sewage solids (51.7 and 44.5 kg, respectively). Similarly, only 75% of sewage-fed ewe lambs exhibited estrus during their first breeding season compared with 94.7% of controls (P<0.10). Conception rate (40.0 and 84.2%, respectively) and lambs born per ewe exposed (0.4 and 0.89, respectively) were also lower (P<0.05) in animals receiving sewage solids than in controls. During the second reproductive cycle, conception rate as well as lambs born per ewe exposed was comparable (P>0.10) between the two groups. Offspring from the sewage-fed ewe lambs, however, weighed less (P<0.05) at weaning than did lambs produced by control animals. Results indicate that a diet containing 7% sewage solids may not be suitable for preparing ewe lambs to go into the breeding flock; once mature size is attained, however, reproductive performance is not hampered by sewage feeding.  相似文献

Female mice post weaning were exposed to 20 kHz sawtooth electric and magnetic fields (EMF) with 6.25 microT peak intensity for 6 weeks. Estrous cycles were checked using vaginal smears over the last 10 days of the experimental period. The vaginal smears from EMF-exposed mice revealed an increase in the frequency of one or two phases persisting. The number of estrous cycles less than 1 was more in the EMF-exposed group than in the sham control group. Furthermore, in the EMF-exposed group, the duration of proestrous and metestrous stages of the estrous cycle was significantly increased compared with the control group. In conclusion, our results suggest that exposure to 20 kHz sawtooth EMF may affect normal cycling of the estrous cycle by disrupting the female reproductive endocrine physiology. We should not disregard the possible adverse reproductive effect of the 20 kHz sawtooth EMF generated under the occupational exposure situation in females.  相似文献
