The optimal shape of the corneal lens of the water bug backswimmer (Notonecta glauca) and the optimal shape and position of the thin transition layer between the distal and proximal units of its cornea are theoretically determined. Using a geometric optical method, first the shape of a geometric interface between the lens units is determined, which eliminates the longitudinal spherical aberration. This interface is investigated for differently formed thick lenses when the medium in contact with the entrance surface of the lens is water or air. The optimal transition layer for the amphibious backswimmer is that, the boundaries of which are the theoretical interfaces for water and air, and the refractive index varies continuously in it. The optimal shape of the corneal lens is determined, with the disadvantageous lenses, with respect to the possible minimal spherical aberration and amount of reflected light from the transition layer, being rejected. The optimal position of the transition layer in the cornea can be obtained from the minimization of the amount of diffracted light on the marginal connection of the layers. The optimal corneal lens for backswimmer has ellipsoid boundary surfaces; the optimal transition layer in it is thin bell-shaped, at the marginal connection of which there is no dimple, the maximum of the layer is on the margin of the cornea. The shape of the theoretically optimal corneal lens, the shape and position of the theoretically optimal transition layer agree well with those of Notonecta glauca. The question posed, the geometric optical method used and the results presented are of general importance, and not only with respect to vision in the bug Notonecta, but also in the fossil trilobites, or in the wave guide theories which have been employed in similar modelling problems, in design of system of lenses without spherical aberration, for example.  相似文献

Measurements of central cornea thickness (CCT) have a very important value in glaucoma patients; if the central cornea is thinner than it suggests, then the intraocular pressure is falsely low. This study compares the central cornea thickness between patients with pseudoexfoliative glaucoma, open angle glaucoma, angle closure glaucoma and control group. This study included 34 patients with pseudoexfoliative glaucoma, 31 patient with open angle laucoma, 28 patients with angle closure laucoma and 36 normal subjects in a control group. Patients in all groups and also normal subjects in control group had no other corneal disorders, no history of trauma, corneal surgery and were not patients with contacts lens use. Patients with pseudoexfoliative glaucoma and also patients with open angle glaucoma had significantly lower values of central cornea thickness compared with normal subjects in control group. Tomey EM 3000 is a non contact specular microscope which was used to measure central corneal thickness in this study. Pachymetry is an important method for diagnoses of glaucoma and for examination of the intraocular pressure in glaucoma patients, because values of the central corneal thickness affect the exact intraocular pressure readings.  相似文献

A soft contact lens, because of its elasticity, can re-center itself over the cornea after it has been displaced by a blink. In this paper, a potential energy method is used to simulate the centering mechanism. Specifications for commercially available soft contact lenses and realistic eye shapes are used for the examples. Purpose

To evaluate the displacement of the central ocular surface during non-contact tonometry with and without soft contact lenses and determine the factors associated with the displacement of the central ocular surface and intraocular pressure (IOP) reading changes caused by wearing soft contact lenses (CLs).

Methods

One eye each in 21 subjects was studied. The cornea was photographed using a high-speed camera at 5,000 frames/sec during non-contact tonometry without contact lenses (NCL), with -5.0 diopters (D), -0.5 D and +5.0 D CL. The displacement of the ocular surface and the factors affecting displacement at the IOP reading and maximum displacement time were investigated.

Results

The IOP readings while wearing +5 D CL were significantly higher than those obtained while wearing -5 D CL. The ocular surface displacement between +5 D CL and other groups were significantly different. A significant positive correlation was found between the ocular surface displacement of subjects at the IOP reading time and the IOP obtained with the non-contact tonometer. A significant negative correlation was found between the ocular surface curvature and the IOP obtained using the non-contact tonometer. The radius of curvature of the ocular surface affected the displacement during the IOP reading and maximum displacement time.

Conclusions

Our results indicate that soft contact lens use changes the ocular surface behavior and IOP readings during non-contact tonometry. The radius of curvature of the eye affects the ocular surface displacement and IOP readings in this situation.  相似文献

Central corneal thickness is very important measurement in glaucoma treatment because it influences the eye pressure measurements. A thinner cornea gives us artifactually lower intraocular pressure and a thicker cornea gives higher intraocular pressure reading, so it has to be corrected in both cases. The aim of this study is to compare central corneal thickness between congenital glaucoma patients and normal subjects. Prospective study included 27 patients with congenital glaucoma and 35 patients in control group. First group was subdivided in two subgroups: A--8 earlier operated patients, B--19 patients treated with topic therapy. Patients had no other corneal disorders, history of trauma, corneal surgery and they were not contact lens wearers. Measurements were performed by specular microscope Tomey EM 3000 on central corneas. This study showed that patients with congenital glaucoma have lower central corneal thickness than normal subjects. Also, the study showed that antiglaucomatous operation doesn't influence central corneal thickness. Central corneal thickness need to be a routine part of examination measurements because of need to correct intraocular pressure according to it, but also the thinner corneas values can suggest congenital glaucoma diagnosis beside the other parameters.  相似文献

Comparative histochemical and biochemical studies on the catalytically active protease Dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPPIV), have been performed in the rabbit cornea and the tear fluid using a sensitive fluorogenic substrate, Gly-Pro-7-amino-4-Trifluoromethyl Coumarine (AFC). In both normal and experimentally injured corneas, DPPIV activity was detected histochemically and in the tear fluid biochemically. In contrast to the normal cornea where DPPIV activity was absent and in the tear fluid where it was low, during continuous wearing of contact lenses or repeated irradiation of the cornea with UVB rays, slight DPPIV activity appeared first in the superficial layers of the corneal epithelium, while later increased activity was present in the whole epithelium. This paralleled elevated DPPIV activity in the tear fluid. Moreover, during continuous contact lens wear, the increased DPPIV activity in the tear fluid was, in many cases, coincidental with the presence of capillaries in the limbal part of the corneal stroma. After severe alkali burns when corneal ulcers appeared, collagen fragments were active for DPPIV, which was associated with high DPPIV activity in the tear fluid. In conclusion, Gly-Pro-AFC was found to be useful for comparative histochemical and biochemical studies on DPPIV activity in the experimentally injured rabbit eye. Using the method of the tear film collection by a short touch of substrate punches to the respective site of the cornea or conjunctiva we can show that in experimental injuries (wearing of contact lenses, irradiation of the cornea with UVB rays), the damaged corneal cells were the main source for DPPIV activity in the tear fluid. It is suggested that the activity of DPPIV measured in the tear fluid might serve as an indicator of early corneal disorders, e.g. corneal vascularization related to contact lens wear.  相似文献

Common indications for and contraindications to corneal contact lens wear are outlined. The processes of adaptation of the cornea to a correctly fitted contact lens are described. Biomicroscopic examination of the cornea revealed that 29 of 250 eyes in the authors'' series showed small abrasions at some time during the fitting period. The dangers of infection of a simple corneal abrasion by such pathogens as Pseudomonas aeruginosa are stressed. Prophylactic treatment of abrasions with a topical antibiotic preparation containing polymyxin is recommended. Serious criticism is levelled at the practice of estimating the fit of a contact lens by the fluorescein pattern only, and repeated keratometry readings combined with biomicroscopy are considered to be essential. It is proposed that the evaluation, fitting and after-care of the contact lens patient should be the responsibility of an ophthalmologist.  相似文献

This article describes microbial keratitis, infection of the cornea by micro-organisms. Contact lens wear is a predisposing factor for the development of microbial keratitis. Micro-organisms probably adhere to the contact lens, transfer from the contact lens to a damaged or compromised corneal epithelial surface, penetrate into the deeper layers of the cornea and produce corneal damage. Host responses to the invading micro-organisms, while designed to protect the eye, can often exacerbate the situation and the resulting microbial keratitis can lead to permanent blindness. The microbial, biochemical and immunological aspects of MK will be described in detail.  相似文献

Stylophorans are a Palaeozoic group of non‐pentamerous echinoderms, morphologically well‐adapted to a benthic mode of life on soft sediment seafloors. By developing a thin and wide theca, they successively increased the surface area in contact with the substrate resulting in an even distribution of the body mass resting on the ground, and efficiently preventing the body from sinking into non‐indurated sediments (snowshoe strategy). In stylophorans, the body surface is dramatically increased in result of the expansion of two integumentary areas on the lower thecal surface. While infracentral areas are reduced in primitive forms to the detriment of massive marginals; in boot‐shape cornutes, infracentral areas are larger, polyplated and framed by very delicate marginals. In heart‐shaped cornutes, the reduction of both infracentral areas is compensated by the development of spiny elements on the theca outline. In forms where the degree of bilateral symmetry is high, the left infracentral area is larger than the right area, resulting in an elongated thecal shape. In structural geology, changes of shape of a rock submitted to a strain can be categorized by translating the obtained deformation into a strain ellipsoid plotted on a Flinn diagram, while in biology changes of shapes of organisms are traditionally measured through morphometric analysis. By applying Flinn's principle of strain ellipsoid to biological objects, the present study aims to characterize different life adaptations across stylophorans, observing changes of shape of both infracentral areas interpreted as two ellipsoids. Once plotted on a Flinn diagram, three significantly separated clusters are observed when focusing on the left area. This concerns forms with reduced infracentral areas, highly and weakly asymmetrical forms. According to these results, three new morphological adaptations are described (water strider, flat fish and stream‐lined body). These newly described adaptations enabled snowshoe strategist stylophorans to remain stable on top of the seafloor.  相似文献

This paper presents an elastohydrodynamic model of the human eyelid wiper. Standard lubrication theory is applied to the fluid layer between the eyelid wiper and ocular surface. The role of the lubrication film is to reduce the shear stresses by preventing solid to solid contact between the eyelid wiper and ocular surface. For the lubrication film to be effective, it is required that the orientation of the eyelid wiper changes between the opening and closing phases of a blink. In order to model this, the hydrodynamic model is coupled with an elastic mattress model for the soft tissue of the eyelid wiper and ocular surface. This leads to a one-dimensional non-linear partial differential equation governing the fluid pressure in the lubrication film. In order to solve the differential equation, a loading condition or constraint equation must be specified. The resulting system is then solved numerically. The model allows predictions of the tear film flux from under the upper eyelid, as well as normal and shear stresses acting on the ocular surface. These factors are important in relation to dry eye syndrome, deformation of the cornea and contact lens design. It is found that the pressure and shear stress under the eyelid act across a length of approximately 0.1 mm which is consistent with clinical observations. It order to achieve a flow of tears from under the upper eyelid during a blink, the model requires that the normal force the eyelid applies to the ocular surface during the closing phase of the blink is significantly higher than during the opening phase of the blink. We examined whether lymphangiogenesis is essential for the process of lens destruction and subsequent remodeling in the newt eye. Lens regeneration was induced by pricking the lens once with a needle through the cornea. The results showed that the formation of the vacuoles which was mediated by lysosomes occurred in the original lens on 8 days after pricking, and histolysis of the lens was induced 24 h later. At that time, new lymphatic vessels appeared in the normally avascular cornea. Immunofluorescence studies revealed the expression of VEGF receptor not only on the cells in the central cornea but also on those in the dorsal iris. Moreover, dendritic cells (DCs) migrated from the peripheral to the central regions in the cornea to engulf the remains of the lens. Next, to determine the extent to which the DCs are important for lens regeneration, we transplanted the DCs that had engulfed the remains of the lens into the eyeball of the normal animals. Interestingly, lens regeneration began in the dorsal iris of eyeballs into which the DCs were transplanted and also in those in which no DCs were transplanted. However, surgical removal of the spleen of the recipient animals prior to transplantation resulted in both a failure of both the VEGFR expression in the dorsal iris and a failure of the novel regeneration.  相似文献

A study of biphasic soft tissues contact is fundamental to understanding the biomechanical behavior of human diarthrodial joints. To date, biphasic-biphasic contact has been developed for idealized geometries and not been accessible for more general geometries. In this paper a finite element formulation is developed for contact of biphasic tissues. The augmented Lagrangian method is used to enforce the continuity of contact traction and fluid pressure across the contact interface, and the resulting method is implemented in the commercial software COMSOL Multiphysics. The accuracy of the implementation is verified using 2D axisymmetric problems, including indentation with a flat-ended indenter, indentation with spherical-ended indenter, and contact of glenohumeral cartilage layers. The biphasic finite element contact formulation and its implementation are shown to be robust and able to handle physiologically relevant problems.  相似文献

Acanthamoeba keratitis is a chronic infection of the human cornea. Many people who have this infection wear soft contact lenses. Usually lens wearers clean and maintain their lenses with various ophthalmic solutions including homemade saline. Recently it has been shown that homemade saline solutions play a role in lens contamination and thus in Acanthamoeba keratitis. We therefore evaluated the viability of cysts of three species of Acanthamoeba by exposing them for various time periods to saline, cleaning, and disinfectant solutions generally used to care for these lenses. We found that the viability of the cysts in saline solutions ranged from a minimum of 14 days to 90 days of exposure. In cleaning solutions, the survival times ranged from a minimum of 1 day to 90 days of exposure. Disinfectants, as expected, were the most effective of all tested solutions in killing Acanthamoeba cysts. The survival times ranged from 6 h to 14 days. None of these products were effective in destroying Acanthamoeba cysts in less than 6 h of exposure, which exceeds the suggested time that any given solution should be used for lens care.  相似文献

Larval Xenopus laevis at stage 56 (Nieuwkoop and Faber, '56) were subjected to various types of lentectomy: (1) simple lentectomy, from the pupillary space after incision of outer and inner cornea; (2) lentectomy from the dorsal region of the eye; (3) lentectomy from the dorsal region of the eye and simultaneous incision of the outer cornea; (4) lentectomy from the dorsal region of the eye and simultaneous incision of the outer and inner cornea. The results obtained show that the outer cornea underwent lens-forming transformations only when the inner cornea had been incised, thus permitting outer cornea (Experiments I-IV). No lens regeneration occurred when the inner cornea was left intact (Experiments II, III). It was concluded that the factor(s) allowing the lens-forming transformations of the outer cornea is not an aspecific nutritional factor(s) but a more specific factor(s) that cannot reach the outer cornea when the inner cornea is intact. Therefore, the absence of the lens and sufficient nutrient available to the outer cornea are not enough to allow lens regeneration from the outer cornea. When lens removal was carried out through the dorsal part of the eye (Experiments III-IV) the lens regenerated from the pericorneal epidermis of this region in a large number of cases.  相似文献

Material properties of cornea and sclera are important for maintaining the shape of the eye and the requisite surface curvatures for optics. They also need to withstand the forces of external and internal musculature and fluctuations in intraocular pressure (IOP). These properties are difficult to measure and variable results have been reported. A previously published experimental procedure, from which the material properties of the eyeball coats were obtained, has been modelled in this paper using Finite Element Analysis, in order to test the accuracy of the experiment. Material parameters were calculated from the model and the resulting relationships between stress and strain for the cornea and sclera compared to their experimentally obtained counterparts. The comparison between model and experiment was close for the sclera but more varied for the cornea. The pressure vessel model can be applied for measuring the material properties of the sclera but is less accurate for the cornea.  相似文献

The lens and cornea are transparent and usually avascular. Controlling nutrient supply while maintaining transparency is a physiological challenge for both tissues. During sleep and with contact lens wear the endothelial layer of the cornea may become hypoxic, compromising its ability to maintain corneal transparency. The mechanism responsible for establishing the avascular nature of the corneal stroma is unknown. In several pathological conditions, the stroma can be invaded by abnormal, leaky vessels, leading to opacification. Several molecules that are likely to help maintain the avascular nature of the corneal stroma have been identified, although their relative contributions remain to be demonstrated. The mammalian lens is surrounded by capillaries early in life. After the fetal vasculature regresses, the lens resides in a hypoxic environment. Hypoxia is likely to be required to maintain lens transparency. The vitreous body may help to maintain the low oxygen level around the lens. The hypothesis is presented that many aspects of the aging of the lens, including increased hardening, loss of accommodation (presbyopia), and opacification of the lens nucleus, are caused by exposure to oxygen. Testing this hypothesis may lead to prevention for nuclear cataract and insight into the mechanisms of lens aging. Although they are both transparent, corneal pathology is associated with an insufficient supply of oxygen, while lens pathology may involve excessive exposure to oxygen.  相似文献

The steady state distribution of oxygen tension in thein vivo cornea is estimated in the present study by using a nonlinear oxygen consumption rate equation of the Michaelis-Menten type. Such a rate expression is more accurate than the previous simplified versions in predicting the oxygen consumption rate. It is found that for an open eye with or without contact lens, the oxygen tensions predicted previously are in good agreement with these predicted in the present work. However, for a closed eye with or without contact lens, the previous predictions underestimate the oxygen tension.  相似文献

The three-dimensional structure of F1-ATPase from beef heart mitochondria was investigated by electron microscopic techniques. The presence of high concentrations of nucleotides is essential for preservation of the quaternary structure. When investigated under such conditions, monodisperse F1-ATPase could not be distinguished from the membrane-bound enzyme. At low resolution, the particle shape resembles an oblate ellipsoid of revolution with an axial ratio of about 2:1. From several lines of evidence (including field micrographs at higher magnifications, Markham rotational analysis, and tilting experiments), two conclusions may be drawn concerning the three-dimensional fine structure of F1-ATPase. 1. At the periphery of the molecule, six globular protein masses are orientated in a way similar to the chair conformation of cyclohexane. This array is interpreted to be made up of an alternating sequence of alpha and beta subunits. 2. Part of the central space is occupied by a seventh protein mass, protrusions of which are likely to be in contact with some of the outer subunits. A gamma subunit is supposed to be constituent part of this central protein mass. As a consequence, this model favours a stoichiometry of alpha 3 beta 3 gamma for the large subunits of beef heart F1-ATPase.  相似文献

A two-component model of the eyeball that represents the cornea as a momentless, linearly elastic deformable surface and the scleral region, as an elastic element that responds to intraocular pressure changes by volume changes, has been used to analyze the effect of spatial inhomogeneity in the distribution of effective corneal stiffness on the mechanical properties of the eye. The effective stiffness of the cornea characterized both the elastic properties and the thickness of the cornea within the framework of the model. Various axisymmetric forms of the effective stiffness distribution characterized by monotonic increase along the arc between a point on the corneal surface and the apex of the cornea were studied. The considered distributions simulated both natural inhomogeneity and apical region weakening due to surgical interventions. Numerical simulation yielded the dependences of deformation parameters on intraocular pressure changes. These parameters characterized the deformation properties of both the cornea (apex displacement) and the eyeball as a whole (intraocular volume change). In the case of moderate inhomogeneity, the dependences were only slightly different from those for a homogeneous cornea with an effective stiffness equal to the mean value for the corresponding inhomogeneous distribution. A noticeable increase in the integral response of the cornea and the eyeball as a whole to changes in pressure was observed if the effective stiffness amplitude was very high (two or more times higher than the mean value). The effect of inhomogeneity on the results of tonometric measurements with a Maklakoff tonometer (flat stamp) was studied. The tonometric difference, that is, the difference between the tonometric pressure (in the loaded eye) and the true pressure (before loading), mainly depended on the average stiffness of the cornea in this case as well, with a substantial increase observed at very high stiffness amplitudes only. Apical weakening of the cornea led to an increase (although not very pronounced) of the tonometric difference.  相似文献
