1. 1.|Fourteen male volunteers were examined under passive heating.

2. 2.|Electrical skin resistance (ESR) and rectal temperature (Tre) were measured during the whole period of exposure.

3. 3.|It was found that:

• —|ESR decreases rapidly with increasing air temperature. Assuming an exponential curve yields a mean time constant of 14 min.

• —|There is a correlation between the individual ESR time constants and Tre increases (r = 0.695, P < 0.005).

• —|Additional changes of ESR were noted in 8 subjects at a constant air temperature of 42°C.

4. 4.|It is concluded that ESR may be a useful indicator of the sweating response of the human thermoregulatory system during exogenous heat load.

• Induction of gene mutations by SV40 was studied in aneuploid human and Chinese hamster cells. In Chinese hamster cells SV40-induced chromosome aberrations were also studied.

• SV40 penetrated into the cells of both lines and induced synthesis of the T antigen. The efficiency of infection in Chinese hamster cells was tested additionallby their ability to form colonies in medium lacking the serum growth factor. The maximal number of cells with growth factor independence was observed on the first day after infection. When hamster cells had been maintained in “factor-free medium” for the first two passages after infection a sub-line was isolated, which synthesized T antigen 60 days after exposure to SV40. This was considered to be an indirect proof of the integration of viral genome into host chromosome.

• A significant increase in the frequency of chromosomal aberrations was detected in SV40-infected Chinese hamster cells. It was observed on the first and second days after treatment. The most numerous were the chromosome and chromatid breaks, which were distributed randomly in 5 morphological groups according to the chromosome length.

• SV40-induced mutations of resistance to 8-AG and 6-MP in human and Chinese hamster cells respectively were detected, when cells were plated in selective medium one to five days after infection. Induction was detected in all the 4 experiments with human cells and in 9 out of 11 experiments with Chinese hamsters cells. Induction was highly significant according to the Wilcoxon test (P>0.99), when the results of all experiments carried out in human and Chinese hamster cells were summarized. Resistance was stable after prolonged cultivation of 13 isolated clones under non-selective conditions.

• It is suggested that viral genome integration, gene mutations and chromosomal aberrations may have common molecular mechanisms. The role of gene mutations in virus-induced carcinogenesis is discussed.

1. 1.|The development times and reproduction were measured for Daphnia pulex and Daphnia magna from 5 to 30°C at 5°C increments.

2. 2.|The general trends for D. pulex and D. magna were for the duration of all juvenile instars to be less than that of adults and for the last juvenile (or adolescent) instar to be longer than all previous juvenile instars.

3. 3.|The number of juvenile instars both species pass through before adulthood is influenced by temperature with increasing numbers occurring at temperature extremes.

4. 4.|Duration of development time decreased over the entire range of increasing temperatures measured for D. pulex but increased for D. magna at 30°C in relation to 25°C.

5. 5.|Quadratic models were less desirable than simple linear logarithmic transformations of the form ln Y = ln a + b ln X for describing the temperature/development relationship.

6. 6.|The greatest young production occurs at 15 and 20°C with significant decreases occurring at temperatures above and below these.

7. 7.|The observed temperature-dependent phenomena an the ecological relationships for the two species are discussed.

Since the results of the women health initiative study showing an overall negative risk-benefit ratio with 0.625 mg of conjugated estrogens plus 2.5 mg of medroxyprogesterone acetate, the use of the lowest effective dose of steroids in hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is recommended.

A low-dose regimen appears to induce less side effects such as breast tenderness or leg pain than do higher dose preparations.

The decrease in hot flashes with low-dose estrogens, range 60–70%, is less than the 80–90% reduction with standard dosing. But this mean that 60–70% of menopausal women do not need higher doses.

The same applies to bone preservation which is dose dependent: the number of non-respondant women will be higher than with standard doses. However, randomized double-blind, placebo controls trials have defined positive effects on bone of low doses of HRT with adequate calcium and Vitamin D in elderly women. The use of bone densitometry and of biochemical markers of bone turnover is mandatory in women using low or ultra-low-dose preparations.

In spite of the lack of trials conducted with low-dose HRT, this treatment seems to be safer:

• the plasma levels of estradiol are lower; as far as breast cancer risk is concerned, the decrease of this subrogate marker is considered as favourable;

• the increase in breast density is less pronounced;

• the nurses's health study found a dose relationship for stroke, with no increase in risk with low-dose of estrogens;

• the effects on subrogate markers of cardiovascular risk seem to be more favourable.

Beside the low-dose HRT, one must consider some other facts:

• the “critical window” theory: it is biologically plausible that HRT, if started early after the menopause can slow the progression of coronary atherosclerosis;

• the way of administration of HRT: some observational studies have shown no increase in the risk of venous thromboembolism risk among women treated with transdermal estrogens;

• the progestogen used: a French cohort study recently performed found no increase in breast cancer risk with the use of micronized progesterone meanwhile the increase in risk observed with other progestogens was similar to the findings of the WHI study.

In the future, it is conceivable that more comprehensive pharmacogenomic studies will lead to effective algorithms for individualizing the right dose of steroids to be used in HRT.  相似文献

1. Water fleas (Daphnia magna) bred at 23°C were non-responsive to temperatures between 13 and 25°C.

2. At the lower (11°C) and upper limits (30°C) their klinokinetic avoidance behaviour showed a larger intraindividual than interindividual variation.

3. Thermal sensitivity for avoidance responses in D. magna was about 1.5°C.

4. For D. magna bred for one parthenogenetic generation at 14°C heat avoidance temperature was about 8°C lower, and cold avoidance temperature was about 1°C higher than in D. magna from 23°C.

5. In group experiments the animals showed some preference for the acclimation temperature.

6. Cold induced stenothermy and warm induced eurythermy in D. magna were related to the mode of reproduction.

1. 1.|Pinealectomy did not significantly alter the length of the mean durations of individual hibernation bouts in adult Spermophilus tridecemlineatus.

2. 2.|Similarly, no statistically-significant differences in mean durations of individual hibernation bouts between pinealectomized and sham-pinealectomized group squirrels were observed for young-of-the year S. tridecemlineatus

3. 3.|Some apparent differences of pinealectomy are suggested as they relate to age, stage of hibernation cycle and time of year during which pinealectomies are performed.

4. 4.|Daily s.c. injections of 50 μg of melatonin late in the subjective photophase induced no statistically-significant differences in mean durations of individual hibernation bouts between either adult, female pinealectomized or intact S. tridecemlineatus and their respective controls.

5. 5.|Adult, female S. tridecemlineautus with reduced titres of endogenous melatonin displayed on statistically-significant difference in the mean duration of initial hibernation bouts compared with controls.

6. 6.|It is possible that melatonin per se or that pinealectomy or melatonin titre alterations are generally failing to induce any significant changes in the torpor/arousal cycles of seasonal hibernators; or that a parameter other than the duration of torpor/arousal cycles is being modulated by the pineal complex.

1. 1. The pattern of elevation of several serum biochemical indices (BI) of training stress (creatine kinase, CK; lactate dehydrogenase, LDH; aspartate aminotransferase, AST, Ca2+; urate, UR; urea, U; total protein, Prot; cholesterol, C) were measured serially through two extended periods of training, including taper (50 days each) separated by a period of complete non-training (90 days) in two male subjects.

2. 2. The patterns of variation in BI were compared with similar variation in elements of a two compartment model predicting performance from training.

3. 3. These elements arbitrarily described as Fitness [g(t)] and Fatigue [h(t)] were estimated daily from a daily training impulse [w(t)] defined from the duration time and heart rate elevation of an individual in a training session.

4. 4. g(t) and h(t) were used to predict performance [p(t)] which might be expected from the training undertaken. So that: p(t) = k1g(t) — k2h(t) where k1 and k2 are arbitrary constants.

5. 5. Performance p(t) when iteratively modelled against a Criterion running Performance, Cp(t) measured serially throughout training, over a standard distance, then defines the pattern of variation in the elements g(t) and h(t) (Morton et al., 1990).

6. 6. Hard training for 28 days and a succeeding 22 days of taper in each training period produced a rise and fall in elevated serum enzyme activity, ESEA, (CK, LDH and AST) which mirrored the time-course pattern of h(t), the fatigue element of the dose/response model of training, with a slight phase delay.

7. 7. Thus ESEA was already declining during hard training.

8. 8. During the taper period ESEA declined rapidly to base line. This response was remarkably symmetrical in each, separate training period.

9. 9. The Criterion running performance (CP) declined during hard training and rebounded throughout the taper period reaching an asymptote before beginning to decline again as training fitness [g(t)] was lost, although the fatigue [h(t)] state was now minimal.

10. 10. Serum Prot, U, Ur respectively were also elevated throughout hard training, first following the hypothesized h(t) curve but showing a biphasic response, declining during the latter phase of hard training, and rising again during taper.

11. 11. The symmetry of response of these indices in each period was less evident than the ESEA response. None of the BI patterns measured was in phase with g(t), all, seemingly, reflected the catabolic rather than the anabolic process of hard training.

1. Entomopathogenic nematodes penetrate and kill Galleria mellonella within 48 h at optimal temperatures.

2. Low temperature induces infection latency, preventing host death until optimal conditions resume.

3. Infected Galleria survived 25 days at 5°C. On transfer to 25°C, 100% and 12.5% of Steinernema carpocapsae and Steinernema riobravis infected larvae died within 72 h.

4. Infective juvenile penetration decreased with decreasing temperature; declining from 49.7 and 49.3 nematodes/host at 25°C to 6.3 and 0.25 nematodes/host at 5°C for S. carpocapsae and S. riobravis, respectively.

5. Latent infection occurs, albeit infrequently, due to low host penetration at low temperature.

1. 1. Cold-induced vasodilatation (CIVD) was assessed from records of foot-pad temperatures of 6 domestic cats during immersion of both hind feet in a 0°C water bath.

2. 2. All experiments were performed following anaesthesia with sodium pentobarbital.

3. 3. Four days after the control recordings, the animals were given indomethacin, 5 mg/kg intravenously, and the CIVD response was examined once again; a third test of the cold response was performed 4 days after the treatment with indomethacin.

4. 4. Phasic increases in foot-pad temperature (CIVD) during immersion were smaller (P < 0.05) and delayed in onset (P < 0.05) in the animals treated with indomethacin at a dose which inhibits cyclo-oxygenase.

5. 5. It is proposed that CIVD involves a balance between central symphathetic vasoconstrictor tone and periodic prostaglandin-induced vasodilatation.
