Abstract.  1. Intraspecific competition can be an important factor influencing the individual fitness of organisms. This study reports density-dependent effects on the fecundity of the beech scale insect ( Ultracoelostoma assimile , Hemiptera: Margarodidae) on naturally occurring, canopy-dominant red beech ( Nothofagus fusca , Fagaceae) trees in New Zealand. For the first time an increasing intensity of intraspecific competition at increasing spatial scales within individual host trees is demonstrated.
2. Beech scale insect 'tests' containing adult female scale insects and eggs were collected from the trunks of 10 red beech trees [17.7–48.5 cm in diameter at breast height (1.4 m), d.b.h.] with varying densities of scale insect infestation. The relationship between individual female fecundity and scale insect density at three spatial scales: local (within 5 cm), lower trunk (below 2 m above ground level), and whole tree, was tested.
3. Beech scale insect fecundity was density dependent, with total female egg load decreasing with increasing scale insect density. The strength of the density-dependent effect increased with increasing spatial scale, suggesting that scale insects are creating a tree-wide drain on the quality of phloem sap, rather than depleting nutrients from localised, high-density areas within trees. These results indicate that at high densities, the New Zealand beech scale insect can have a negative effect on the nutritional quality of the phloem of red beech, thus negatively affecting conspecifics elsewhere on individual host trees. The increasing intensity of the effect with increasing spatial scale within individual trees emphasises the importance of measuring density-dependent effects at the appropriate spatial scale.

Eusocial insects offer a unique opportunity to analyze the evolution of body size differences between sexes in relation to social environment. The workers, being sterile females, are not subject to selection for reproductive function providing a natural control for parsing the effects of selection on reproductive function (i.e., sexual and fecundity selection) from other kinds of natural selection. Patterns of sexual size dimorphism (SSD) and testing of Rensch's rule controlling for phylogenetic effects were analyzed in the Meliponini or stingless bees. Theory predicts that queens may exhibit higher selection for fecundity in eusocial taxa, but contrary to this, we found mixed patterns of SSD in Meliponini. Non‐Melipona species generally have a female‐biased SSD, while all analyzed species of Melipona showed a male‐biased SSD, indicating that the direction and magnitude of the selective pressures do not operate in the same way for all members of this taxon. The phylogenetic regressions revealed that the rate of divergence has not differed between the two castes of females and the males, that is, stingless bees do not seem to follow Rensch's rule (a slope >1), adding this highly eusocial taxon to the various solitary insect taxa not conforming with it. Noteworthy, when Melipona was removed from the analysis, the phylogenetic regressions for the thorax width of males on queens had a slope significantly smaller than 1, suggesting that the evolutionary divergence has been larger in queens than males, and could be explained by stronger selection on female fecundity only in non‐Melipona species. Our results in the stingless bees question the classical explanation of female‐biased SSD via fecundity and provide a first evidence of a more complex determination of SSD in highly eusocial species. We suggest that in highly eusocial taxa, additional selection mechanisms, possibly related to individual and colonial interests, could influence the evolution of environmentally determined traits such as body size.

Variation in the expression of reproductive traits provides the raw material upon which sexual selection can act. It is therefore important to understand how key factors such as environmental variation influence the expression of reproductive traits, as these will have a fundamental effect on the evolution of mating systems. It is also important to consider the effects of environmental variation upon reproductive traits in both sexes and to make comparisons with the environment to which the organism is adapted. In this study, we addressed these issues in a systematic study of the effect of a key environmental factor, variation in larval density, on reproductive trait expression in male and female Drosophila melanogaster. To do this, we compared reproductive trait expression when flies were reared under controlled conditions at eight different larval densities that covered a 20-fold range. Then, to place these results in a relevant context, we compared the results to those from flies sourced directly from stock cages. Many reproductive traits were surprisingly insensitive to variation in larval density. A notable exception was nonlinear variation in female fecundity. In contrast, we found much bigger differences in comparisons with flies from stock cages-including differences in body size, latency to mate, copulation duration, fecundity, and male share of paternity in a competitive environment. For a number of traits, even densities of 1000 larvae per vial (125 larvae per mL of food) did not phenocopy stock cage individuals. This study reveals novel patterns of sex-specific sensitivity to environmental variation that will influence the strength of sexual selection. It also illustrates the importance of comparisons with the environment to which individuals are adapted.

Animals are known to exhibit 'personality'; that is, individual differences in behaviour that are consistent across time and/or situations. One axis of personality of particular importance for behavioural ecology is boldness, which can be defined as the tendency of an individual to take risks. The relationship between individual personality and fitness correlates, particularly those involved in reproduction, remains largely unexplored. In the current study, we used female Eastern mosquitofish ( Gambusia holbrooki ) to ascertain whether certain reproductive traits (e.g. stage of pregnancy, fecundity) are correlated with individual personality in two wild populations in New South Wales, Australia. To quantitatively assess this relationship, we tested individual fish for their level of boldness, as measured by their latency to exit a refuge and tendency to shoal in a novel environment. We also quantified individual differences in general activity and tendency to swim near the water surface and substratum. For both populations taken together, bolder individuals tended to be smaller, relatively less fecund (when taking body size into account), and spent more time near the water surface than near the substratum compared with timid individuals. Individual boldness was not correlated with either general activity or stage of pregnancy. To our knowledge, our study characterizes for the first time a relationship between an individual personality trait (boldness) and a reproductive fitness correlate (fecundity) in fishes.

Diet mixing is a common feeding habit among polyphagous insect herbivores and is believed to be advantageous for performance-related factors like growth, survival and oviposition. However, relatively little is known about the influence of artificial diet or their mixtures on the performance of edible insects. We examined the effects of artificial diet mixtures on the developmental and reproductive performance (survival, developmental time, fresh adult weight and female fecundity) of an edible grasshopper, Ruspolia differens (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae). We raised individuals from eggs and reared newly hatched nymphs to adult stage on six different dietary treatments consisting of a single diet, and mixtures of two, three, five, six and eight artificial diets. More diversified diets resulted in shorter development time and greater adult fresh weight and female fecundity compared to the single diet or less diversified diets. Even with slight diet diversification, survival to adult stage was greatly improved. Overall, these results highlight the potential of diet mixtures in achieving maximum adult weights and female fecundity and shortening development time, information which could be used when designing mass-rearing programs for this edible grasshopper.

The ichneumonid parasitoid, C. chlorideae is an important natural enemy of pod borer/bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) in different agro-ecosystems. The sex-ratio of parasitoids has an important bearing on the population build up of the natural enemies for biological control of insect pests. Therefore, the present studies were conducted to gain an understanding of the influence of mating behaviour and abundance of the insect host on fecundity and sex-ratio of the parasitoid, C. chlorideae. There was no significant influence of number of matings and abundance of the insect host on cocoon formation, adult emergence, and larval and pupal periods of C. chlorideae. However, fecundity and female longevity were significantly influenced by mating and abundance of the insect host. There was a significant and positive correlation (r = 0.84**) between longevity and fecundity of C. chlorideae females. The unmated C. chlorideae females produced only males. Nearly 20% of the females that had mated twice were able to parasitize the H. armigera larvae successfully. The sex-ratio of the progeny from females that had mated twice was male biased. Females mated with males from the unmated females produced significantly less numbers of females than those mated with males from the fertilized females, indicating genetic regulation of sex-ratio in C. chlorideae.

In many species, males have the capacity to directly influence (either positively or negatively) the fitness of their mates and offspring, not only via parental care contributions and/or precopulatory resource provisioning, but also via the post‐copulatory activity of those substances passed on to their mates in their ejaculates. Here, we examine how an individual male's identity may be related to phenotypic variation in short‐term female fecundity in the model species, Drosophila melanogaster. The effect of male identity on short‐term fecundity stimulation of females was repeatable across time and accounted for over a fifth of the total observed phenotypic variation in fecundity in two independent populations. The functional explanations for these results and the implications for our understanding of the factors that contribute to the adaptive significance of mating preferences and/or sexual conflict are discussed.
