综述了昆虫寄主标记信息素的研究进展。昆虫寄主标记信息素是指由昆虫产生的用来标记寄主上有同种个体存在的化学物质。昆虫寄主标记信息素的主要生态学功能是调节昆虫的产卵行为,通过阻止自身或同种其它个体对已标记寄主的产卵选择,或减少产卵量来减少后代之间对寄主资源的竞争。寄主标记信息素也会给释放着带来不利的影响,如信息盗用和盗寄生现象等。昆虫寄主标记信息素也调节昆虫近缘种之间对共同寄主资源的竞争。近缘种昆虫对相互寄主标记信息素识别能力的差异反映了不同昆虫对同一寄主资源竞争能力的强弱。寄主标记信息素产生和贮存的部位一般与外分泌腺、消化系统或生殖系统相联系,杜氏腺、毒腺、前胸腺、腹腺、下唇腺、后产卵管、卵巢、中肠和后肠等是产生或贮存寄主标记信息素的常见部位。产生的寄主标记信息素一般在成虫产卵时由产卵器、口器或排泄口释放到寄主体内或体表。卵寄生蜂的寄主标记信息素一般标记在寄主的体表,雌成蜂用触角检测;其它寄生蜂的寄主标记信息素常产在寄主体内,用产卵器检测;植食性昆虫的寄主标记信息素只产在寄主表面,用触角或产卵器检测。昆虫的产卵器、口器、触角或跗节上着生有感受寄主标记信息素的化感器,可以检测到标记在寄主体内或体表的寄主标记信息素。昆虫寄主标记信息素的完全定性涉及活性化合物的分离、鉴定、合成以及行为测定等,已有几种昆虫的寄主标记信息素成分得到了分离鉴定。  相似文献

The alarm pheromone of the ant Camponotus obscuripes (Formicinae) was identified and quantified by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Comparisons between alarm pheromone components and extracts from the major exocrine gland of this ant species revealed that the sources of its alarm pheromone are Dufour's gland and the poison gland. Most components of Dufour's gland were saturated hydrocarbons. n-Undecane comprised more than 90% of all components and in a single Dufour's gland amounted to 19 microg. n-Decane and n-pentadecane were also included in the Dufour's gland secretion. Only formic acid was detected in the poison gland, in amounts ranging from 0.049 to 0.91 microl. This ant species releases a mixture of these substances, each of which has a different volatility and function. When the ants sensed formic acid, they eluded the source of the odor; however, they aggressively approached odors of n-undecane and n-decane, which are highly volatile. In contrast, n-pentadecane, which has the lowest volatility among the identified compounds, was shown to calm the ants. The volatilities of the alarm pheromone components were closely related to their roles in alarm communication. Highly volatile components vaporized rapidly and spread widely, and induced drastic reactions among the ants. As these components became diluted, the less volatile components calmed the excited ants. How the worker ants utilize this alarm communication system for efficient deployment of their nestmates in colony defense is also discussed herein.  相似文献

Worker sterility in honeybees is neither absolute nor irreversible. Whether under queen or worker control, it is likely to be mediated by pheromones. Queen-specific pheromones are not exclusive to queens; workers with activated ovaries also produce them. The association between ovarian activation and queen-like pheromone occurrence suggests the latter as providing a reliable signal of reproductive ability. In this study we investigated the effect of queen pheromones on ovary development and occurrence of queen-like esters in workers' Dufour's gland. Workers separated from the queenright compartment by a double mesh behaved like queenless workers, activating their ovaries and expressing a queen-like Dufour's gland secretion, confirming that the pheromones regulating both systems are non-volatile. Workers with developed ovaries produced significantly more secretion than sterile workers, which we attribute primarily to increased ester production. Workers separated from the queenright compartment by a single mesh displayed a delayed ovarian development, which we attribute to interrupted transfer of the non-volatile pheromone between compartments. We suggest that worker expression of queen-like characters reflects a queen-worker arms race; and that Dufour's gland secretion may provide a reliable signal for ovarian activation. The associative nature between ovary development and Dufour's gland ester production remains elusive.  相似文献

The Dufour's gland of the paper wasp, Polistes fuscatus,is a source of the cues used by dominant females to recognize the eggs laid by subordinates or nonnestmates on pre (worker)-emergence nests. When dominant wasps were presented with an egg covered with either (1) the Dufour's gland extract of a subordinate cofoundress, (2) the extract of an egg from the same subordinate, or (3) the solvent alone, the dominant female destroyed and replaced the eggs covered with the Dufour's extract significantly more frequently than the other eggs. Eggs with the extract of a nonnestmate's Dufour's gland were also eaten significantly more frequently than those with the solvent. Given similar choices, subordinates did not destroy any eggs. The Dufour's gland appears to have little or no role in communicating dominance directly among aggressively interacting cofoundresses.  相似文献

Summary The female accessory glands include the tubular poison gland, the paired, lemon-shaped uterus glands, and Dufour's gland, an unbranched tubular organ. They consist essentially of a single layer of epithelium cells surrounded by a basement membrane. The lumen is lined by cuticle. The proteinaceous secretion of the poison gland is released into intracellular ducts provided with microvilli, each connected to a channel lined with cuticle which leads to the central lumen of the gland. The channel is formed by special canal cells. Nerve endings are interspersed among the gland cells. The uterus gland consists of four cell types derived from a single type of precursor cell found in newly hatched wasps. Type I cells are covered by type II cells and are thus without contact to the luminal surface of the gland. They contain stacks or whorls of mitochondria and smooth cisternae in an alternating arrangement. Vesicles with a secretory product are found in cells of types II and III. Deep anastomosing infoldings of the plasmalemma, stabilized by microtubules and dense material at the branchings, are characteristic for type II cells. Most secretory vesicles are found in type III cells, the prevalent cell type which is thought to be the source of the lipoprotein secretion. Coated vesicles are present at deep infoldings of the plasmalemma. The greatly enlarged apical surface area of type IV cells and the presence of mitochondria in slender outgrowths is suggestive of an osmoregulatory function. In Dufour's gland, two cell types appear in succession, the first with a very dense cytoplasm, the second with dense inclusions and many seemingly empty vesicles of smooth endoplasmic reticulum. The secretion products, lecithin and a cholesterol ester, are thought to be formed by the second cell type. The dense inclusion might be lecithin, which reacts with osmium tetroxide. The cholesterol ester could have been washed out of the empty vesicles by the embedding procedure.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Walnut-infesting flies in the Rhagoletis suavis species group actively re-use hosts for oviposition despite engaging in a genus-typical host-marking behaviour which, in other Rhagoletis groups, deters oviposition. In a study of the walnut fly, R. juglandis (Cresson), alternative hypotheses for the putative marking behaviour were evaluated.
2. The oviposition site attraction hypothesis proposes that the host mark guides females to oviposition sites on occupied fruit. The competition intensity signal hypothesis proposes that the host mark is an indicator of the level of competition to be incurred if fruit are re-used.
3. In a field cage, females were presented simultaneously with fruit previously exposed to 25 females that were also allowed to oviposit and engage in the putative marking behaviour, and control fruit on which females were allowed only to oviposit. The occurrence of host marking reduced a female's propensity to oviposit from 46% to just over 10%, consistent with the competition intensity signal hypothesis only.
4. In a laboratory assay, the duration of host marking was correlated positively with the size of a female's clutch. This result, also consistent with the competition intensity signal hypothesis, suggests that the amount of marking pheromone on a fruit is a reliable indicator of the number of eggs already deposited within.
5. In a second field-cage experiment, females were allowed to mark on fruit for 0, 10, 20, or 30 min and fruit were presented to test females. Whether or not females alighted on a particular host was not affected by the duration of marking; however, the frequency of both ovipositor probing and egg deposition decreased with increasing duration of marking. Consistent with the competition intensity signal hypothesis, this result suggests that the host mark permits females to assess the level of competition that a clutch will incur within re-used fruit.  相似文献

Investigations were conducted on oviposition by laboratory-reared oblique-banded leafrollers, Choristoneura rosaceana Harris. In paperbag oviposition chambers, females deposited their egg masses in a significantly nonrandom, uniform manner in 16 of 20 replicates. Inpetri dish oviposition chambers, gravid females were exposed to egg masses recently deposited by other females. As determined by the magnitude of the mean direction vector of the second egg mass in relation to the first, females detected and avoided egg masses laid by other females. In addition, they avoided waxed paper from which a recently oviposited egg mass had been removed. This phenomenon is most likely due to a pheromone laid down with each egg mass.  相似文献

1. Chemical espionage in nature may occur when predators or parasitoids home in on animal or plant communication signals. Parasitoid wasps are known to use pheromones emitted by adults hosts to locate host eggs, larvae or pupae. The response of Trichogramma egg parasitoids to a synthetic sex pheromone blend of moths has been shown in a number of studies over the past 40 years. 2. Trichogramma pretiosum (Hymenoptera, Trichogrammatidae) is a tiny parasitic wasp, attacking the eggs of the noctuid moth Heliothis virescens (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae). This study investigated whether T. pretiosum homes in on the sex pheromone of H. virescens at close range. The arrestment response of the wasps to sex pheromone gland extracts of two types of female moths, so‐called high and low females, was also tested, referring to two selected extreme pheromone types of H. virescens. The study also investigated whether the wasps would mount females, possibly to hitchhike with them. 3. The wasps were arrested by the common, ‘low’ pheromone, but not by the rare, ‘high’ pheromone or by extracts from male hairpencils. The wasps did not show a preference for separate sex pheromone compounds, but when pre‐exposed to the major sex pheromone component of H. virescens before the tests together with H. virescens eggs, they did show a preference, indicating learning behaviour. In the mounting experiments, mated females were mounted significantly more than virgin females or males, suggesting that hitchhiking is a strategy used by these wasps to locate moth eggs. 4. This represents the first study to show a differential response of parasitoid wasps to two different sex pheromone types in a single host species. The results warrant further investigations into the potential role of parasitic wasps in the evolution of sexual communication in moths.  相似文献

A volatile sex pheromone is produced in an adult female-specific gland located on the anterior of the last abdominal tergite of the female German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.). In this area, the cuticle forms deep depressions in which a large number of cuticular orifices are located. The cuticular orifices are connected to secretory cells via cuticular ducts surrounded by duct cells. The pheromone gland exhibits a clear developmental maturation in relation to sexual maturation of the female. The secretory cells of a newly formed gland in the imaginal female are small and contain few secretory vesicles. The amount of extractable pheromone in the gland is low on day-0 but it increases with age and peaks on day-6. The secretory cells in a mature day-6 gland are characterized by a large number of electron-lucid secretory vesicles. abundant RER and SER, a large nucleus and a long, convoluted end apparatus which is lined with numerous microvilli. The contents of the secretory vesicles are exocytosed into extracellular reservoirs at the base of microvilli and then transported to the cuticular surface through the long ducts. The supportive function of the duct cell in the glandular organization and developmental regulation of the gland are discussed.  相似文献

Summary The fact that the atrial gland ofAplysia californica contains peptides that will induce egg laying when injected into mature animals prompts consideration of the role played by the gland in the normal physiology of the animal. We have approached this consideration with a combination of morphologic and physiologic investigations. Morphologic study reveals the gland as a stratified epithelium comprised of three cell types. The only evidence for secretory activity was seen in the columnar epithelial cells containing large vesicular inclusions. These cells appear to discharge their secretory product into the lumen of the large hermaphroditic duct. While we cannot specify the contents of the secretion from the columnar cells, perfusate of the duct lumen contained bioassay active material only when the duct was exposed to depolarizing conditions. Though additional experiments in which exogenously administered atrial gland peptides were found to initiate egg laying in animals from which the source of the egg laying neurohormone had been extirpated, it appears likely that the atrial gland substances are not endocrine factors. Queens of the primitively eusocial wasp Ropalidia marginata appear to maintain reproductive monopoly through pheromone rather than through physical aggression. Upon queen removal, one of the workers (potential queen, PQ) becomes extremely aggressive but drops her aggression immediately upon returning the queen. If the queen is not returned, the PQ gradually drops her aggression and becomes the next queen of the colony. In a previous study, the Dufour's gland was found to be at least one source of the queen pheromone. Queen-worker classification could be done with 100% accuracy in a discriminant analysis, using the compositions of their respective Dufour's glands. In a bioassay, the PQ dropped her aggression in response to the queen's Dufour's gland macerate, suggesting that the queen's Dufour's gland contents mimicked the queen herself. In the present study, we found that the PQ also dropped her aggression in response to the macerate of a foreign queen's Dufour's gland. This suggests that the queen signal is perceived across colonies. This also suggests that the Dufour's gland in R. marginata does not contain information about nestmateship, because queens are attacked when introduced into foreign colonies, and hence PQ is not expected to reduce her aggression in response to a foreign queen's signal. The latter conclusion is especially significant because the Dufour's gland chemicals are adequate to classify individuals correctly not only on the basis of fertility status (queen versus worker) but also according to their colony membership, using discriminant analysis. This leads to the additional conclusion (and precaution) that the ability to statistically discriminate organisms using their chemical profiles does not necessarily imply that the organisms themselves can make such discrimination.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of the female sex pheromone glands in Callosobruchus maculatus (Coleoptera : Bruchidae) were localized using a masking technique, combined with eiectro-antennography and by a comparison of the glandular cells of sexually active (flightless) females and non-sexually active (flight-form) females. Each unicellular gland is an invagination of the integumental membrane capped by a single secretory cell. These glands are situated on the fine intersegmental membrane, which joins the pygidium to the ovipositor. The secretory cells of the glands of active females are characterized by well-developed microvilli, with many elongated mitochondria among the latter. The high metabolic activity of these cells is revealed by the presence of heterogeneous secretion vesicles, some of which contain abundant crystallized material. Deep basal invaginations indicate the uptake of substances from the haemolymph. The receptor canal is a network of fine cuticular filaments which have the same structure regardless of the female's sexual status. Cells from the glands of non-sexually active females are underdeveloped and show no invaginations of the basal membrane and very few microvilli. The localization of these glands was made possible by the use of SEM, TEM and EAG as well as by masking the suspected zones and by comparing females in different physiological states: flightless females, which were sexually active and producing pheromones; and flight-form females, non-sexually active and producing no sex pheromones. Only by adopting such a stringent method was it possible to confirm the function of the glands whose ultrastructure was studied.  相似文献

Factors affecting the orientation, reproduction, and sex ratio of the egg parasitoid Ooencyrtus kuvanae Howard were examined. Adult females were attracted to airborne volatiles from the egg mass and accessory gland of the primary host, the gypsy moth Lymantria dispar L. Visual cues also affected host selection. Background colors against which egg masses were placed affected oviposition preference. In the absence of egg masses, color variation did not affect wasp behavior. Light is required for parasitism by O. kuvanae. The age and density of both the host and parasitoid affected wasp reproduction and sex ratios. Older egg masses issued relatively fewer wasps and higher proportions of males than did young egg masses. Likewise, wasp reproduction and the proportion of females declined with wasp age. Larger egg masses produced more wasps and lower proportions of males than did smaller egg masses. The number of offspring per female, and the proportion of female offspring, were inversely related to wasp density. Implications to biological control of the gypsy moth and parasitoid ecology are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract Foraging ants recruit nestmate workers to food sources by a variety of mechanisms. We report that one behavioural subcategory of the recruitment pheromone complex of Solenopsis invicta Buren involves orientation induction. The orientation inducer pheromone exerts its effects by changing the physiological state of the recipient rather than by releasing a measurable behaviour. Some ant species use a physical 'waggle' behaviour to motivate (change physiological state) nestmate workers to follow their chemical trail. The orientation inducer pheromone can be interpreted as a chemical analogue of the physical 'waggle' inducing effects. This behaviour is not elicited by the recruitment pheromone components responsible for orientation and/or attraction. Each of these behavioural categories is mediated by a different blend of chemicals from the Dufour's gland. Activity-concentration thresholds indicate that the attraction and inducer part of the recruitment pheromone require about 250 times more worker equivalents for a response than the orientation pheromone. Therefore, the recruitment sub-categories are differentially activated by the amount of Dufour's gland material released.  相似文献

Females of some insect species adjust the number of ovipositions and clutch size adaptively depending on conspecific density and probably experience. In a series of three experiments, we examined the effect of the presence of conspecifics, host quality, and oviposition experience on oviposition behavior and clutch size determination by females of the polyphagous fruit fly Anastrepha ludens (Diptera: Tephritidae). In the first experiment, we determined that grouped (eight females per cage) A. ludens females tended to visit and oviposit in more hosts than did solitary females probably as a result of stimulation by the presence of conspecifics. We also determined that females with previous oviposition experience visited and oviposited in more hosts than inexperienced ones. Importantly, when females were grouped, we observed significantly more landings on unoccupied hosts (i.e., devoid of flies) than on occupied ones (i.e., with at least one fly on it). However, oviposition experience, and not female density, was the most important factor affecting clutch size. Naive females deposited larger egg clutches than experienced ones. In the second experiment, we found that oviposition experience and host quality (i.e., clean fruit or fruit covered with a host marking pheromone [HMP] extract), influenced clutch size and the decision of females to defend or not defend the host. Clutch size and number of fights were greater on clean than on HMP-marked hosts. In the third experiment, we observed that host quality (i.e., size) played a significant role with regard to the number of female fights, host marking behavior, and clutch size. Specifically, females fought and dragged their aculeus longer on small- and medium-sized hosts than on large ones. But this behavior varied according to whether females were kept alone or grouped. Clutch size was greatest in the largest hosts. Considering all the above, we believe that the observed increase in ovipositional activity by grouped A. ludens females can be attributed to competition through mutual interference and not social facilitation as has been reported in other tephritid species.  相似文献

Females of the parasitoid digger wasp species Liris niger hunt crickets as food for their future brood. The wasps paralyse the prey by injecting their venom directly into the CNS. The venom is produced in a gland consisting of two ramified glandular tubules terminating in a common reservoir. The reservoir contents enter the sting bulb via a ductus venatus. Secretory units of dermal gland type III line the two free gland tubules, the afferent ducts to the reservoir and the cap region within the reservoir. Secretion products of tubules reach the reservoir through the cuticle-lined central funnel. Secretory cells in the distal and middle parts of the tubules contain extensive rough endoplasmic reticulum and numerous electron-dense vesicles, whereas secretory cells of the afferent ducts and the cap region of the reservoir lack electron-dense vesicles and the endoplasmic reticulum is poorly developed. The secretory apparatus undergoes age-related changes. The secretory units in the venom gland tubules and inside the reservoir complete differentiation 1 day after imaginal ecdysis. After 30 days, massive autolytic processes occur in the secretory cells and in the epithelial cells of the reservoir. Analysis of the polypeptide composition demonstrates that the venom reservoir contains numerous proteins ranging from 3.4 to 200 kDa. A dominant component is a glycoprotein of about 90 kDa. In contrast the polypeptide composition of Dufour's gland is completely different and contains no glycoproteins. Comparison of the venom reservoir contents with the polypeptide pattern of venom droplets reveals that all of the major proteinaceous constituents become secreted. Thus the secreted venom contains exclusively proteins present in the soluble contents of the venom gland.  相似文献

Insecticides can affect the complex coordination of activities associated with reproduction through their sublethal impact on the nervous system. Our objective was to document the effects of a sublethal dose (1% mortality) of chlordimeform on reproductive events in the female cabbage looper moth, Trichoplusia ni. A significantly higher percentage of females treated with chlordimeform initiated calling at some time during the scotophase. Chlordimeform stimulated pheromone emission early in the scotophase. However, late in the scotophase pheromone emission was significantly lower in chlordimeform-treated females when compared with control females. Overall, a lower amount of pheromone was detected in glands of chlordimeform-treated females. This effect was significant only during the second half of the scotophase. We suggest that chlordimeform stimulates pheromone transport to the gland surface and calling behavior resulting in depletion of pheromone reserves over the course of the scotophase. Chlordimeform also decreased the mating success of males. Oviposition and egg hatch were also affected by chlordimeform. Mated females treated with chlordimeform laid significantly fewer eggs than acetone-treated females. In addition, hatchability of eggs laid by mated female T. ni treated with chlordimeform was significantly lower than for eggs laid by control females.  相似文献

Chemical signals that can be associated with the presence of a host insect often work as arrestants in close range host location by parasitoids, leading to longer searching times on patches where such signals are present. Our current view of parasitoid host location is that by prolonging the search times in patches, randomly searching parasitoids enhance their chance of detecting host insects. However, prolonged search times are not necessarily the only modification in parasitoid behaviour. In this study, we examine the exploitation of host-fruit marking pheromone of rose-hip flies, Rhagoletis basiolaOsten-Sacken (Diptera: Tephritidae) by the specialized egg-larval parasitoid Halticoptera rosae Burks (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae). We provide evidence that the instantaneous probability that a host egg will be located by a searching parasitoid wasp differs markedly between pheromone-marked and unmarked fruits. The arresting response to the marking pheromone, i.e., the prolonged time a wasp is willing to search on marked fruits, can only account for a small fraction of the difference in successful host location on marked and unmarked fruits. We further demonstrate that the time wasps require to locate the host egg is independent of the size of the rose-hip harbouring the fly egg, and thus is independent of the area the wasp potentially has to search. A comparison of our findings with results of different search algorithms for parasitoid wasps suggests that wasps use the fly's pheromone marking trail as a guide way to the fly's oviposition site and thus the host egg.  相似文献

Males of a solitary digger wasp, the European beewolf, Philanthus triangulum, possess large mandibular glands that have been reported to produce a scent marking pheromone. We analysed the morphology and ultrastructure of these glands using light microscopy as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The paired glands are located laterally in the head and each side consists of a larger and a smaller part. Both parts possess a collecting duct each with distinct openings at the mandible base. However, the collecting duct of the larger part is additionally connected to the pharynx through a lateral extension. The collecting ducts are bordered by a monolayered epithelium lined with cuticle that exhibits conspicuous ramified protuberances. About 1400 acini consisting of class 3 gland cells surround the ducts and are connected to them through conducting canals. The main components in the cytoplasm of these gland cells are mitochondria, well-developed smooth endoplasmatic reticulum, and electron lucent vesicles suggesting a high secretory activity. The connection between the large gland parts and the pharynx suggests that the secretion of the mandibular glands might not only be delivered directly onto the mandibles but might also be transported to and stored in the postpharyngeal gland.  相似文献

The axillary glands of Ictalurus are lobulated invaginations of the epidermis, opening at a pore between the pectoral spine and the cleithrum. Holocrine cells lining a false lumen form a viscous secretion. The secretory cells originate in the tenuous basal layer of the gland wall. Secretion is initiated by the formation of compound vesicles in cells that become very large and have complex cytoplasm of a varied appearance. Golgi systems are well developed and the perinuclear cytoplasm may contain many mitochondria and sacs of ribosomal endoplasmic reticulum; some tracts of cytoplasm are vesicular and contain free ribosomes. Some cells contain numerous large lysosomes, and some have extensive contents of fibrillar masses imperfectly separated by membranes, that recall the appearance of the mucous secretion of goblet cells. The secretory cells break down, releasing the degenerating organelles, including the nuclei, into the false lumen. Some structures are still recognizable in the secretion even after it has been expelled, but the main part of the formed secretion consists of the mucus-like masses. Various leucocytes are found in the gland walls and embedded in the secretion. The fine structure differentiates the holocrine cells of the axillary gland from the club cells of the epidermis, and from the venom glands associated with the fin spines of catfishes. The function of the axillary gland secretion remains unknown.  相似文献
