A novel biological treatment system, which contains two types of membrane modules in a single tank, was developed for simultaneous nitrification and denitrification. Both of the modules were fed with the substrates on the tube side of the silicone tubes by diffusing them to the biofilms which form on the surface of the tubes. One module was fed with methanol for denitrification and the other one was fed with pure oxygen for nitrification. As a result, the interference of organic carbon on nitrification, and that of oxygen on denitrification, were both hindered by the diffusion barriers (biofilms), thereby allowing two different niches for nitrifiers and denitrifiers to coexist in a single tank. Besides saving space and the amount of alkalinity required for nitrification, this system also produced low residual chemical oxygen demand (COD) and high nitrogen removal rates (2.9-3.4 gN m-2 d-1 of surface area of membrane).  相似文献

New pathways for ammonia conversion in soil and aquatic systems   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
Ammonia conversion processes are essential for most soil and aquatic systems. Under natural conditions, the many possible reactions are difficult to analyze. For example, nitrification and denitrification have long been regarded as separate phenomena performed by different groups of bacteria in segregated areas of soils, sediments or aquatic systems sequentially in time. It has now been established that strict segregation in place and time of the two processes is not necessary and that both denitrifiers and nitrifiers have versatile metabolisms. However, the rates described for aerobic denitrifiers are very low compared to the rates observed under anoxic conditions. Also the rates of nitrifier denitrification are quite low, indicating that these conversions may not play an important role under natural conditions. In addition, these processes often result in the emission of quite large amounts of undesirable products, NO and N2O. Heterotrophic nitrification might be of relevance for systems, that contain a high carbon to nitrogen ratio. Recently, a novel process (Anammox) has been discovered in which ammonium serves as the electron donor for denitrification of nitrite into dinitrogen gas. 15N labeling studies showed that hydrazine and hydroxylamine were important intermediates in this process. Enrichment cultures on ammonium, nitrite and bicarbonate resulted in the dominance of one morphotypical microorganism. The growth rate of the cultures is extremely low (doubling time 11 days), but the affinity for ammonium and nitrite and the conversion rates (9.2 10–4 mol kg–1 s–1) are quite high. Some of the reported high nitrogen losses in soil and aquatic systems might be attributed to anaerobic ammonium oxidation. In addition, this conversion offers new opportunities for nitrogen removal, when it is combined with recently developed processes for partial nitrification.  相似文献

Bacterial species capable of performing both nitrification and denitrification in a single vessel under similar conditions have gained significance in the wastewater treatment scenario considering their unique character of performing the above reactions under heterotrophic and aerobic conditions respectively. Such a novel strategy often referred to as simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) has a tremendous potential in dealing with various wastewaters having low C : N content, considering that the process needs very little or no external carbon source and oxygen supply thus adding to its cost-effective and environmentally friendly nature. Though like other micro-organisms, heterotrophic nitrifiers and aerobic denitrifiers convert inorganic or organic nitrogen-containing substances into harmless dinitrogen gas in the wastewater, their ecophysiological role in the global nitrogen cycle is still not fully understood. Attempts to highlight the role played by the heterotrophic nitrifiers and aerobic denitrifiers in dealing with nitrogen pollution under various environmental operating conditions will help in developing a mechanistic understanding of the SND process to address the issues faced by the traditional methods of aerobic autotrophic nitrification–anaerobic heterotrophic denitrification.  相似文献

Aerobic granular sludge is a new type of microbe auto-immobilization technology; in this paper, short-cut nitrification and denitrification were effectively combined with the granular sludge technology. Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification granules were developed in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) using synthetic wastewater with a high concentration of ammonia nitrogen at 25 °C with a dissolved oxygen concentration above 2.0 mg/L and a 15 days sludge retention time. The characteristics of the sludge and the removal efficiency were studied, and the removal mechanisms of the pollutants and the process of short-cut nitrification were analyzed. The average granule diameter of the granular sludge was 704.0 μm. The removal rates of pollutants and the accumulation rate of nitrite in the SBR were studied. During treatment of wastewater with a high concentration of ammonia nitrogen, simultaneous nitrification, and denitrification and the stripping process could contribute to the removal of total nitrogen. The high pH value, the high concentration of free ammonia, and the delamination of granular sludge were the main factors contributing to the short-cut nitrification property of granular sludge in the reaction process.  相似文献

Biological nitrification/denitrification is frequently used to remove nitrogen from tannery wastewater containing high concentrations of ammonia. However, information is limited about the bacterial nitrifiers and denitrifiers and their functional genes in tannery wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) due to the low-throughput of the previously used methods. In this study, 454 pyrosequencing and Illumina high-throughput sequencing, combined with molecular methods, were used to comprehensively characterize structures and functions of nitrification and denitrification bacterial communities in aerobic and anaerobic sludge of two full-scale tannery WWTPs. Pyrosequencing of 16S rRNA genes showed that Proteobacteria and Synergistetes dominated in the aerobic and anaerobic sludge, respectively. Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) amoA gene cloning revealed that Nitrosomonas europaea dominated the ammonia-oxidizing community in the WWTPs. Metagenomic analysis showed that the denitrifiers mainly included the genera of Thauera, Paracoccus, Hyphomicrobium, Comamonas and Azoarcus, which may greatly contribute to the nitrogen removal in the two WWTPs. It is interesting that AOB and ammonia-oxidizing archaea had low abundance although both WWTPs demonstrated high ammonium removal efficiency. Good correlation between the qPCR and metagenomic analysis is observed for the quantification of functional genes amoA, nirK, nirS and nosZ, indicating that the metagenomic approach may be a promising method used to comprehensively investigate the abundance of functional genes of nitrifiers and denitrifiers in the environment.  相似文献

Thiosphaera pantotropha is capable of simultaneous heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification. Consequently, its nitrification potential could not be judged from nitrite accumulation, but was estimated from complete nitrogen balances. The maximum rate of nitrification obtained during these experiments was 93.9 nmol min−1 mg of protein−1. The nitrification rate could be reduced by the provision of nitrate, nitrite, or thiosulfate to the culture medium. Both nitrification and denitrification increased as the dissolved oxygen concentration fell, until a critical level was reached at approximately 25% of air saturation. At this point, the rate of (aerobic) denitrification was equivalent to the anaerobic rate. At this dissolved oxygen concentration, the combined nitrification and denitrification was such that cultures receiving ammonium as their sole source of nitrogen appeared to become oxygen limited and the nitrification rate fell. It appeared that, under carbon-and energy-limited conditions, a high nitrification rate was correlated with a reduced biomass yield. To facilitate experimental design, a working hypothesis for the mechanism behind nitrification and denitrification by T. pantotropha was formulated. This involved the basic assumption that this species has a “bottleneck” in its cytochrome chain to oxygen and that denitrification and nitrification are used to overcome this. The nitrification potential of other heterotrophic nitrifiers has been reconsidered. Several species considered to be “poor” nitrifiers also simultaneously nitrify and denitrify, thus giving a falsely low nitrification potential.  相似文献

In order to enhance performances of organics removal and nitrification for the treatment of swine wastewater containing high concentration of organic solids and nitrogen than conventional biological nitrogen removal process, a submerged membrane bioreactor (MBR) was followed by an anaerobic upflow bed filter (AUBF) reactor in this research (AUBF–MBR process). The AUBF reactor is a hybrid reactor, which is the combination of an anoxic filter for denitrification and upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) for acid fermentation. In the AUBF–MBR process, it showed a considerable enhancement of the effluent quality in terms of COD removal and nitrification. The submerged MBR could maintain more than 14,000 mg VSS/L of the biomass concentration. Total nitrogen (T-N) removal efficiency represented 60% when internal recycle ratio was three times of flow-rate (Q), although the nitrification occurred completely. Although the volatile fatty acids produced in AUBF reactor can enhance denitrification rate, but the AUBF–MBR process showed reduction of overall removal efficiency of the nitrogen due to the reduction of carbon source by methane production in the AUBF reactor compared to that of theoretical nitrogen removal efficiency.

Long-term operation of the submerged MBR showed that the throughputs of the submerged MBR were respectively 74, 63, and 31 days at 10, 15, and 30 L/m2 h (LMH) of permeate flux. Resistance to filtration by rejected solid is the primary cause of fouling, however the priority of cake resistance (Rc) and fouling resistance (Rf) with respect to filtration phenomenon was different according to the amount of permeate flux. The submerged MBR, here, achieved a steady-state flux of 15 LMH at 0.4 atm. of trans-membrane pressure (TMP) but the flux can be enhanced in the future because shear force by tangential flow will be greater when multi-layer sheets of membrane were used.  相似文献

Combined nitrification-denitrification processes   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Abstract: Nitrification and denitrification have traditionally been regarded as essentially separate phenomena, carried out by different bacteria in segregated areas of soil, sediments, water or reactors. However, research in the 1980s and 1990s has established that nitrifiers and denitrifiers are not as metabolically fastidious as previously thought, and strict segregation is not necessary. Moreover, some bacteria are able to convert NH44 and other reduced nitrogen compounds to nitrogen gas and the gaseous nitrogen oxides in combined nitrification/denitrification processes. Such organisms are of interest for wastewater treatment for two opposing reasons. Firstly, the idea of single-stage nitrogen removal has obvious attractions for system design. Secondly, N2O is a serious pollutant, implicated in virtually all current environmental problems (e.g. acid rain, greenhouse effect, ozone depletion).  相似文献

Denitrification in a nitrogen-limited stream ecosystem   总被引:9,自引:6,他引:9
Denitrification was measured in hyporheic, parafluvial, and bank sediments of Sycamore Creek, Arizona, a nitrogen-limited Sonoran Desert stream. We used three variations of the acetylene block technique to estimate denitrification rates, and compared these estimates to rates of nitrate production through nitrification. Subsurface sediments of Sycamore Creek are typically well-oxygenated, relatively low in nitrate, and low in organic carbon, and therefore are seemingly unlikely sites of denitrification. However, we found that denitrification potential (C & N amended, anaerobic incubations) was substantial, and even by our conservative estimates (unamended, oxic incubations and field chamber nitrous oxide accumulation), denitrification consumed 5–40% of nitrate produced by nitrification. We expected that denitrification would increase along hyporheic and parafluvial flowpaths as dissolved oxygen declined and nitrate increased. To the contrary, we found that denitrification was generally highest at the upstream ends of subsurface flowpaths where surface water had just entered the subsurface zone. This suggests that denitrifiers may be dependent on the import of surface-derived organic matter, resulting in highest denitrification rate at locations of surface-subsurface hydrologic exchange. Laboratory experiments showed that denitrification in Sycamore Creek sediments was primarily nitrogen limited and secondarily carbon limited, and was temperature dependent. Overall, the quantity of nitrate removed from the Sycamore Creek ecosystem via denitrification is significant given the nitrogen-limited status of this stream.  相似文献

This paper describes both qualitative and quantitative aspects of simultaneous autotrophic nitrification and heterotrophic denitrification by, respectively, the nitrifierNitrisomonas europaea and either of the denitrifiersPseudomonas denitrificans orParacoccus denitrificans co-immobilized in double-layer gel beads. The system is based on the establishment of well-defined oxic and anoxic zones within the cell supports and on physical separation of the nitrifying and denitrifying populations. Nitrification and denitrification rates were obtained from measured bulk concentrations and head-space analysis. The latter analyses showed that ammonia was primarily converted into molecular nitrogen. Nitrous oxide was not detected. High nitrogen removal rates (up to 5.1 mmol N m–3 gel s–1) were achieved in continuous reactors under aerobic conditions. The overall rate of nitrogen removal was controlled by the nitrifying step. The approach followed is, in principle, also suitable to the coupling of other oxidative and reductive bioprocesses having complementary metabolic routes. Two-stage bioconversion processes can be thus conducted as if single-staged, which results in more compact reactor systems.  相似文献

Fluctuating soil redox regimes may facilitate the co-occurrence of microbial nitrogen transformations with significantly different sensitivities to soil oxygen availability. In an upland humid tropical forest, we explored the impact of fluctuating redox regimes on gross nitrogen cycling rates and microbial community composition. Our results suggest that the rapidly fluctuating redox conditions that characterize these upland soils allow anoxic and oxic N processing to co-occur. Gross nitrogen mineralization was insensitive to soil redox fluctuations. In contrast, nitrifiers in this soil were directly affected by low redox periods, yet retained some activity even after 3–6 weeks of anoxia. Dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) was less sensitive to oxygen exposure than expected, indicating that the organisms mediating this reductive process were also tolerant of unfavorable (oxic) conditions. Denitrification was a stronger sink for NO3 in consistently anoxic soils than in variable redox soils. Microbial biomass and community composition were maintained with redox fluctuation, but biomass decreased and composition changed under static oxic and anoxic soil regimes. Bacterial community structure was significantly correlated with rates of nitrification, denitrification and DNRA, suggesting that redox-control of soil microbial community structure was an important determinant of soil N-cycling rates. Specific nitrogen cycling functional groups in this environment (such as nitrifiers, DNRA organisms, and denitrifiers) appear to have adapted to nutrient resources that are spatially and temporally variable. In soils where oxygen is frequently depleted and re-supplied, characteristics of microbial tolerance and resilience can frame N cycling patterns.  相似文献

The biological nitrification-denitrification process is used extensively for removal of ammonia nitrogen from wastewaters. Saves in aeration, organic matter (for denitrification) and surplus sludge are achievable if nitrite accumulation is possible in the nitrification step. In this paper, operational parameters were studied for each process for maximum nitrite accumulation in the nitrification step and nitrite adaptation in the denitrification step. Nitrite accumulation during nitrification can be controlled by the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration, presenting a maximum of 65% at around 0.7 mg DO/L. Denitrification can be adapted to nitrite and the process is stable if nitrite in the reactor is keep low. The performance of a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) and an up flow sludge blanket reactor (USB) were compared. Once the operational parameters were established, a CSTR for nitrification and an USB reactor for denitrification were operated in series for 25 days. The process was stable and a steady state was maintained for 20 days, and 93.5% of overall nitrogen removal was achieved in the nitrification-denitrification via the nitrite process.  相似文献

Estimating denitrification in North Atlantic continental shelf sediments   总被引:17,自引:3,他引:14
A model of coupled nitrification/denitrification was developed for continental shelf sediments to estimate the spatial distribution of denitrification throughout shelf regions in the North Atlantic basin. Using data from a wide range of continental shelf regions, we found a linear relationship between denitrification and sediment oxygen uptake. This relationship was applied to specific continental shelf regions by combining it with a second regression relating sediment oxygen uptake to primary production in the overlying water. The combined equation was: denitrification (mmol N m–2 d–1)=0.019* phytoplankton production (mmol C m–2 d–1). This relationship suggests that approximately 13% of the N incorporated into phytoplankton in shelf waters is eventually denitrified in the sediments via coupled nitrification/denitrification, assuming a C:N ratio of 6.625:1 for phytoplankton. The model calculated denitrification rates compare favorably with rates reported for several shelf regions in the North Atlantic. The model-predicted average denitrification rate for continental shelf sediments in the North Atlantic Basin is 0.69 mmol N m– 2 d–1. Denitrification rates (per unit area) predicted by the model are highest for the continental shelf region in the western North Atlantic between Cape Hatteras and South Florida and lowest for Hudson Bay, the Baffin Island region, and Greenland. Within latitudinal belts, average denitrification rates were lowest in the high latitudes, intermediate in the tropics and highest in the mid-latitudes. Although denitrification rates per unit area are lowest in the high latitudes, the total N removal by denitrification (53 × 1010 mol N y–1) is similar to that in the mid-latitudes (60 × 1010 mol N y–1) due to the large area of continental shelf in the high latitudes. The Gulf of St. Lawrence/Grand Banks area and the North Sea are responsible for seventy-five percent of the denitrification in the high latitude region. N removal by denitrification in the western North Atlantic (96 × 1010 mol N y–1) is two times greater than in the eastern North Atlantic (47 × 1010 mol N y–1). This is primarily due to differences in the area of continental shelf in the two regions, as the average denitrification rate per unit area is similar in the western and eastern North Atlantic. We calculate that a total of 143 × 1010 mol N y–1 is removed via coupled nitrification/denitrification on the North Atlantic continental shelf. This estimate is expected to underestimate total sediment denitrification because it does not include direct denitrification of nitrate from the overlying water. The rate of coupled nitrification/denitrification calculated is greater than the nitrogen inputs from atmospheric deposition and river sources combined, and suggests that onwelling of nutrient rich slope water is a major source of N for denitrification in shelf regions. For the two regions where N inputs to a shelf region from onwelling have been measured, onwelling appears to be able to balance the denitrification loss.  相似文献

Nitrogen and carbon components in domestic modified wastewater were completely removed by simultaneous nitrification and denitrification using a membrane-aerated biofilm reactor where biofilm was fixed on a hollow-fiber membrane. To measure the spatial distribution of pH, ammonium and nitrate ions and to observe microbes inside the biofilm fixed on the membrane, microelectrodes and the fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) method were applied. Due to plug flow in the vertical direction (from the bottom to the top of the reactor), ammonium nitrogen was gradually removed and negligible nitrate nitrogen was detected throughout the reactor. FISH revealed that ammonia-oxidizing bacteria were mainly distributed inside the biofilm and other bacteria, which included denitrifying bacteria, were mainly distributed outside the biofilm and over the suspended sludge. In order to characterize bacterial activity in the vertical direction of the reactor, nitrification rates at lower, central and upper points were calculated using microelectrode data. The nitrification rate at the lower point was 7 and 125 times higher than those at the central and upper points, respectively. These results show that the removal of carbon and nitrogen compounds was accomplished efficiently by using various kinds of bacteria distributed vertically and horizontally in a single reactor.  相似文献

Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification using a mixed methanotrophic culture was investigated. When both NO3 -N (108 mg l–1) and NH3-N (59 mg l–1) were added into batch reactors, nitrate removal was complete within 10 h at the rate of 47 mg NO3 -N g VSS–1 day–1 when dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration was maintained at 2 mg DO l–1. Ammonia removal started simultaneously with nitrate removal at a slower rate of 14 NH3-N g VSS–1 day–1. No significant accumulation of nitrite or nitrate during ammonia utilization suggested the occurrence of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification.  相似文献

Nitrification and denitrification are important microbiological reactions of nitrogen. In this work, the kinetics of these reactions have been investigated based on a Monod-type expression involving two growth limiting substrates: ammonium nitrogen and dissolved oxygen for nitrification and nitrate nitrogen and dissolved organic carbon for denitrification. The kinetic constants and yield coefficients were evaluated for both these reactions. Past experimental work was used to determine the constants for the nitrification reaction. For the denitrification reaction, experiments were performed in a stirred tank reactor under conditions such that only one substrate was growth limiting. Steady-state values of the substrate concentrations in the reactor were determined at various dilution rates. These data were analyzed to obtain the kinetic and stoichiometric constants. From these constants it was concluded that in the range of nitrate nitrogen concentrations encountered in waste water, the denitrification reaction can be considered a first-order reaction. It was also found that three times as much organic carbon is required as nitrate nitrogen for complete nitrogen removal.  相似文献

This study assessed the performance of different single-stage continuous aerated submerged membrane bioreactors (MBR) for nitrogen removal. Almost complete nitrification was achieved in each MBR irrespective of operating mode and biomass system. Denitrification was found to be the rate-limiting step for total nitrogen (T-N) removal. The MBR with internal-loop airlift reactor (ALR) configuration performed better as regards T-N removal compared with continuous stirred-tank reactor (CSTR). It was demonstrated that simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) is the mechanism leading to nitrogen removal and the contribution of microenvironment on SND is more remarkable for the MBRs with hybrid biomass. Macroenvironment analyses showed that gradient distribution of dissolved oxygen (DO) level in airlift MBRs imposed a significant effect on SND. Higher mixed liquor suspended solid (MLSS) concentration led to the improvement in T-N removal by enhancing anoxic microenvironment. Apparent nitrite accumulation coupled with higher nitrogen reduction was accomplished at MLSS concentration exceeded 12.6 g/L.  相似文献

The microbial community composition and activity was investigated in aggregates from a lab-scale bioreactor, in which nitrification, denitrification and phosphorus removal occurred simultaneously. The biomass was highly enriched for polyphosphate accumulating organisms facilitating complete removal of phosphorus from the bulk liquid; however, some inorganic nitrogen still remained at the end of the reactor cycle. This was ascribed to incomplete coupling of nitrification and denitrification causing NO(3)(-) accumulation. After 2 h of aeration, denitrification was dependent on the activity of nitrifying bacteria facilitating the formation of anoxic zones in the aggregates; hence, denitrification could not occur without simultaneous nitrification towards the end of the reactor cycle. Nitrous oxide was identified as a product of denitrification, when based on stored PHA as carbon source. This observation is of critical importance to the outlook of applying PHA-driven denitrification in activated sludge processes.  相似文献

Summary To examine the effect of barley roots on denitrification, a pot experiment was designed to compare N2O production and denitrification in soils with and without barley plants. Denitrification, N2O resulting from denitrification and nitrification, and respiration were estimated by incubating pots with soil with and without intact plants in plastic bags at high moisture levels. C2H2-inhibition of nitrous oxide reductase (partial pressure of 10 kPa C2H2) was used to determine total denitrification rates while incubations with ambient air and with C2H2 at partial pressures of 2.5–5 Pa were used to estimate the amounts of N2O released from autotrophic nitrification and from denitrification processes. Other sources of N2O were presumed to be negligible. Potential denitrification, nitrification and root biomass were measured in subsamples collected from four soil depths. A positive correlation was found between denitrification rates and root biomass. N2 was the predominant denitrification product found close to roots; N2O formed by non autotrophic nitrifiers, assumed to be denitrifiers originated in soil not affected by growing roots. Apparently, roots promote denitrification because they consumed oxygen, thereby increasing the anaerobic volume of the soil. The ratio of actual to potential denitrification rates increased over time, especially in the presence of roots.  相似文献
