The resource dispersion hypothesis (RDH) predicts that resource heterogeneity can act as a passive cause of group‐living in social carnivores and potentially many other species. One central prediction of the RDH is that territory size and group size are not related, as they are determined by resource dispersion and quality, respectively. In this study we investigated the relationship between territory size, group size and group composition in the European badger, a non‐cooperative social mustelid whose behavioural ecology was central to the development of the RDH. Using data from a long‐term study in the UK, we found that territory size and group size were positively related, contradicting a core prediction of the RDH. Furthermore, territory size was more strongly correlated with the number of adult males in the group than to the number of females or total group size. This result suggests that male badgers may have a more important role in territoriality and receive greater benefits from territory enlargement. These findings are consistent with the predictions of the anti‐kleptogamy hypothesis, and suggest that badger territorial and social behaviour is not purely driven by resource dispersion, but may also be associated with breeding behaviour, as in other mustelids.  相似文献

Genetic improvement, without control of inbreeding, can go to loss of genetic variability, reducing the potential for genetic gains in the domestic populations. The aim of this study was to analyze the population structure and the inbreeding depression in Campolina horses. Phenotype information from 43 465 individuals was analyzed, data provided by the Campolina Breeders Association. A pedigree file containing 107 951 horses was used to connected the phenotyped individuals. The inbreeding coefficient was performed by use of the diagonal of the relationship matrix and the genealogical parameters were computed using proper softwares. The effective population size was estimated based on the rate of inbreeding and census information, and the stratification of the population was verified by the average relationship coefficient between animals born in different regions of Brazil. The effects of inbreeding on morphological traits were made by the use of inbreeding coefficient as a covariate in the model of random regression. The inbreeding coefficient increased from 1990 on, impacting effective population size and, consequently, shrinking genetic variability. The paternal inbreeding was greater than maternal, which may be attributed to the preference for inbred animals in reproduction. The average genetic relationship coefficient of animals born in different states was lower than individuals born within the same state. The increase in the inbreeding coefficient was negatively associated with all studied traits, showing the importance to avoid genetic losses in the long term. Although results do not indicate a severe narrowing of the population until the present date, the average relationship coefficient shows signs of increase, which could cause a drastic reduction in genetic variability if inbred mating is not successfully controlled in the Campolina horse population.  相似文献

We determine the critical patch size below which extinction occurs for populations living in one-dimensional habitats surrounded by completely hostile environments in the presence of environmental fluctuations. The population dynamics is reformulated in terms of a stochastic reaction–diffusion equation and is reduced to a deterministic equation that incorporates the systematic contributions of the noise. We obtain bifurcation diagrams and relations for the mean population density at the stationary state, the critical patch size, and the mean number of individuals in the habitat. The effect of the noise differs, depending on whether it affects the net growth rate or the intraspecific competition term. Fluctuations in the net growth rate decrease the critical patch size, whereas fluctuations in the competition term do not change the critical patch size. We compare our analytical results with numerical solutions of the stochastic partial differential equations and show that our procedure proves useful in dealing with reaction–diffusion equations with multiplicative noise.  相似文献

Although patterns of dispersion are a fundamental attribute of modern populations, few attempts have been made to evaluate such spatial patterns in the rock record, evidently because of taphonomic uncertainties concerning in situ preservations of fossils. Unlike body fossils, however, ichnofossils almost inevitably remain in situ , and in some instances are indicative of contemporaneous populations of burrowers. Studies of dispersion among such ichnofossils, by means of the coefficient of dispersion and distance to nearest neighbour techniques, may reveal not only the spacing but also the specific trophic adaptations - and even the general identity - of the tracemakers. In this study, a population of the vertical shaft Skolithos linearis from the Lower Cambrian Bradorc Formation of Labrador exhibits an aggregated or clumped dispersal as a whole; yet individuals within the population exhibit random dispersion at low population densities and uniform dispersion at high population densities. These collective patterns, by analogy with modern tracemakers, suggest suspension feeders, either lophophorate phoronids or tentacular crowned polychaetes, as the ancient tracemaker. In contrast, a S. linearis population from the Middle Silurian Thorold Formation of Ontario exhibits random dispersion at all densities observed, suggesting that the ancient tracemaker was a polychaete that utilized either mucous nets or low, narrow tentacular crowns in suspension feeding. Populations of the vertical U-shaped burrow Diplocraterion sp., from the Thorold Formation, exhibit uniform to random dispersion, suggesting that it represents a dwelling burrow of a suspension-feeding polychaete. Understanding how climate can interact with other factors in determining patterns of species abundance is a persistent challenge in ecology. Recent research has suggested that the dynamics exhibited by some populations may be a non-additive function of climate, with climate affecting population growth more strongly at high density than at low density. However, we lack methodologies to adequately explain patterns in population growth generated as a result of interactions between intrinsic factors and extrinsic climatic variation in non-linear systems. We present a novel method (the Functional Coefficient Threshold Auto-Regressive (FCTAR) method) that can identify interacting influences of climate and density on population dynamics from time-series data. We demonstrate its use on count data on the size of the Soay sheep population, which is known to exhibit dynamics generated by nonlinear and non-additive interactions between density and climate, living on Hirta in the St Kilda archipelago. The FCTAR method suggests that climate fluctuations can drive the Soay sheep population between different dynamical regimes--from stable population size through limit cycles and non-periodic fluctuations.  相似文献

Erythrocyte histograms should be analysed in accordance with the ICSH recommended protocol to determine: How many red cell populations are present and the proportion of the total red cells which are included in each population. The central tendency (mode, median & mean) and dispersion (size ratio, geometric standard deviation & coefficient of variation) for each population. The proportion of microcytic or macrocytic cells in each population. Examples are given to show how the patient's diagnosis is assisted by careful analysis of the histograms and the effect of treatment monitored by sequential testing. Histograms can be generated from blood films or from aperture-impedance and light-scatter volume measurements. Volume measurements on these systems are influenced by the red cell shape and internal refractive index. Mean cell hemoglobin concentration affects both shape in the aperture-impedance orifice and internal refractive index in light-scatter systems. There is poor agreement between volume histograms obtained on the two measuring systems and the histograms available on current automated instruments provide no more useful information than can be obtained from the blood film. Automated instruments need to produce histograms with fewer artefacts and the histograms should then be examined in accordance with the ICSH protocol. This approach should maximise the diagnostic value of the complete blood count.  相似文献

A population balance model of fish population dynamics for batch systems was developed. A growth rate expression was introduced and coupled with the population balance. Solutions of the model provide predictions of such fish size distribution characteristics as average size, standard deviation and coefficient of variation. A growth diffusivity mechanism was found to be inapplicable to systems where a terminal size is reached. A study of the two parameter growth rate expression was conducted, illustrating that conditions conducive to high growth rates also resulted in broadening of size distributions. The model was compared to data found in the literature to demonstrate its predictive capabilities.  相似文献

The role of feedbacks, thresholds, and synergies in environmental science, and their implications for environmental degradation under a growing human population, are reviewed. A detailed analysis of the impacts of climate change on water resources is used to elucidate mechanisms by which nonlinearities arise in environmental science. Additional examples are drawn from analysis of soil degradation and non-climate related degradation of water resources. The often-assumed notion that impacts will grow in proportion to population size is shown to be overly optimistic. In particular, feedbacks, thresholds, and synergies among multiple threats, tend to amplify risk and cause environmental impacts to grow considerably faster than linearly in population size, even when the per-capita living standard and the technological systems deployed to achieve that living standard are assumed to remain constant.  相似文献

An accurate estimate of the divergence time between Native Americans is important for understanding the initial entry and early dispersion of human beings in the New World. Current methods for estimating the genetic divergence time of populations could seriously depart from a linear relationship with the true divergence for multiple populations of a different population size and significant population expansion. Here, to address this problem, we propose a novel measure to estimate the genetic divergence time of populations. Computer simulation revealed that the new measure maintained an excellent linear correlation with the population divergence time in complicated multi-population scenarios with population expansion. Utilizing the new measure and microsatellite data of 21 Native American populations, we investigated the genetic divergences of the Native American populations. The results indicated that genetic divergences between North American populations are greater than that between Central and South American populations. None of the divergences, however, were large enough to constitute convincing evidence supporting the two-wave or multi-wave migration model for the initial entry of human beings into America. The genetic affinity of the Native American populations was further explored using Neighbor-Net and the genetic divergences suggested that these populations could be categorized into four genetic groups living in four different ecologic zones. The divergence of the population groups suggests that the early dispersion of human beings in America was a multi-step procedure. Further, the divergences suggest the rapid dispersion of Native Americans in Central and South Americas after a long standstill period in North America.  相似文献

When we seek to explain the characteristics of living systems in their evolutionary context, we are often interested in understanding how and why certain properties arose through evolution, and how these properties then affected the continuing evolutionary process. This endeavor has been assisted by the use of simple computational models that have properties characteristic of natural living systems but allow simulations over evolutionary timescales with full transparency. We examine a model of the evolution of a gene under selective pressure to code for a protein that exists in a prespecified folded state at a given growth temperature. We observe the emergence of proteins with modest stabilities far below those possible with the model, with a denaturation temperature tracking the simulation temperature, despite the absence of selective pressure for such marginal stability. This demonstrates that neither observations of marginally stable proteins, nor even instances where increased stability interferes with function, provide evidence that marginal stability is an adaptation. Instead the marginal stability is the result of a balance between predominantly destabilizing mutations and selection that shifts depending on effective population size. Even if marginal stability is not an adaptation, the natural tendency of proteins toward marginal stability, and the range of stabilities that occur during evolution, may have significant effect on the evolutionary process.  相似文献

The relationship between the spatiotemporal distribution of resources and patterns of sociality is widely discussed. While the resource dispersion hypothesis (RDH) was formulated to explain why animals sometimes live in groups from which they derive no obvious benefits, it has also been successfully applied to species that benefit from group living. Some empirical tests have supported the RDH, but others have not, so conclusions remain equivocal and further research is required to determine the extent to which RDH predictions hold in natural systems. Here, we test four predictions of the RDH in an African lion population in the context of their fission–fusion society. We analyzed data on group composition of GPS‐collared lions and patterns of prey availability. Our results supported the first and second predictions of the RDH: Home range size (a) was independent of group size and (b) increased with distance between encounters with prey herds. Nonetheless, the third and fourth RDH predictions were not supported: (c) The measure of resource heterogeneity and (d) resource patch richness measured through prey herd size and body size had no significant effect on lion group size. However, regarding the fourth prediction, we added an adaptation to account for dynamics of fission–fusion society and found that the frequency of pride fission increased as group size increased. Our data set restricted us from going on to explore the effect of fission–fusion dynamics on the relationship between group size and patch richness. However, this should be investigated in future studies as including fission–fusion dynamics provides a more nuanced, realistic appreciation of lion society. Our study emphasizes the importance of understanding the complexity of a species' behavioral ecology within the framework of resource dispersion. Whatever larger theoretical framework may emerge to explain lion society, incorporating fission–fusion dynamics should allow the RDH to be refined and improved.  相似文献

The models considered for the spread of an infectious disease in a population are of SIRS or SIS type with a standard incidence expression. The varying population size is described by a modification of the logistic differential equation which includes a term for disease-related deaths. The models have density-dependent restricted growth due to a decreasing birth rate and an increasing death rate as the population size increases towards its carrying capacity. Thresholds, equilibria and stability are determined for the systems of ordinary differential equations for each model. Recent global warming threatens many species and has already caused population‐ and species‐level extinctions. In particular, high risks of extinction are expected for isolated populations of species with low dispersal abilities. These predictions rely on widely used ‘climatic envelope’ models, while individual responses, the ultimate driver of a species response to climate change, have been most often neglected. Here, we report on some changes in life‐history traits of a dispersal‐limited reptile species (a poorly studied taxa) living in isolated populations. Using long‐term data on common lizards collected in southern France, we show that individual body size dramatically increased in all the four populations studied over the past 18 years. This increase in body size in all age classes appeared related to a concomitant increase in temperature experienced during the first month of life (August). Daily maximum temperature in August increased by 2.2°C and yearling snout‐vent‐length increased by about 28%. As a result, adult female body size increased markedly, and, as fecundity is strongly dependent on female body size, clutch size and total reproductive output also increased. For one population where capture–recapture data were available, adult survival was positively related to May temperature. All fitness components investigated therefore responded positively to the increase in temperature, such that it might be concluded that the common lizard has been advantaged by the shift in temperature. We contrast these short‐term results with the long‐term habitat‐based prediction that these populations located close to mountain tops on the southern margin of the species range should be unable to cope with the alteration of their habitat. To achieve a better prediction of a species persistence, one will probably need to combine both habitat and individual‐based approaches.  相似文献

Severe declines in megafauna worldwide illuminate the role of top predators in ecosystem structure. In the Antarctic, the Krill Surplus Hypothesis posits that the killing of more than 2 million large whales led to competitive release for smaller krill‐eating species like the Antarctic minke whale. If true, the current size of the Antarctic minke whale population may be unusually high as an indirect result of whaling. Here, we estimate the long‐term population size of the Antarctic minke whale prior to whaling by sequencing 11 nuclear genetic markers from 52 modern samples purchased in Japanese meat markets. We use coalescent simulations to explore the potential influence of population substructure and find that even though our samples are drawn from a limited geographic area, our estimate reflects ocean‐wide genetic diversity. Using Bayesian estimates of the mutation rate and coalescent‐based analyses of genetic diversity across loci, we calculate the long‐term population size of the Antarctic minke whale to be 670 000 individuals (95% confidence interval: 374 000–1 150 000). Our estimate of long‐term abundance is similar to, or greater than, contemporary abundance estimates, suggesting that managing Antarctic ecosystems under the assumption that Antarctic minke whales are unusually abundant is not warranted.  相似文献

Regularities in the dynamics of natural populations of Soldanella hungarica Simonk. in spruce forests of the Ukrainian Carpathians are generalized from the results of long-term monitoring (1974–2009). It is proved that the size and vitality structure are the major factors determining of the asynchronous functioning principle and the large range of dynamics of elements in subpopulation loci. The rate and scale of the local dynamics are smoothed out at the population level. The populations are characterized by reversibility of population number and a low range of dynamics with long-term cycles of natural turnover of generations. It is suggested that the use of the term “small population” to referring to subpopulation loci is inappropriate.  相似文献

Intraspecific variation in social systems is widely recognized across many taxa, and specific models, including polygamy potential, resource defense, and resource dispersion, have been developed to explain the relationship between ecological variation and social organization. Although mammals from temperate North America and Eurasia have provided many insights into this relationship, rodents from the Neotropics and temperate South America have largely been ignored. In this review we focus on reports documenting intraspecific variation in spacing systems, group size, and mating systems of caviomorphs. This large group of New World hystricognath rodents occupies a diverse array of habitats; thus, members of the same species potentially exhibit different social systems in response to different ecological conditions. Spatial patterns vary in response to a diverse array of factors, including predation, food availability, population density, and soil characteristics. Changes in group size typically correlate with changes in resource availability, particularly food. Mating systems generally reflect the ability of males to control access to females, which may depend on population density or food distribution. In general, social organization in caviomorphs fits predictions of resource-based models; however, most studies have been purely observational, involving small numbers of animals over short time periods and reporting qualitative rather than quantitative levels of ecological correlates. In future studies the use of molecular techniques and controlled, experimental manipulations can increase our understanding of intraspecific variation in caviomorph social systems. This understudied group of rodents offers excellent opportunities to provide insights into the influence of ecological conditions on behavior such as social systems.  相似文献

The seasonality of births in the period 1871-1977 is studied in a rural north-western Spanish population. Based on a total sample of 11,695 birth registrations, temporal variation is analysed. For siblings, according to family reconstitution, the total family size, the legitimacy of the child, and birth order are considered. A coefficient of birth month dispersion is defined and estimated for each family. Intra-family variation is related to inter-family coefficients in order to determine whether the local seasonal pattern of births may be partly explained by family characteristics.  相似文献

Differential velocity sedimentation at unit gravity has been used to separate an asynchronous population of mammalian cells into fractions synchronized in all phases of the cell cycle. Better enrichment was obtained for G1 and S phases than for G2-M phase. Electronic cell volume measurements of the fractions indicated that the separation was primarily dependent on cell size, and an experimentally determined sedimentation coefficient agreed very well with its predicted value. Sources of dispersion in the separation (including the contribution of cell density heterogeneity) were quantitated and found to be insufficient to explain all of the observed dispersion. Both the limitations and the applications of the technique are discussed.  相似文献
