Illus. 1961.—Attempts were made to determine the causes of persistent but seasonally variable abnormalities in both vegetative and floral organs of an assemblage of plants grouped under the name Trillium grandiflorum var. variegatum Smith. Comparative studies of vegetative and floral morphology between normal and abnormal plants are presented and illustrated. Normal shoots of the same rhizome vary but little from season to season. Abnormal shoots of the same rhizome vary markedly in some instances and very little in others from season to season. In the abnormal shoots, leaves and petals vary most, then stamens, ovaries, and sepals, in that order. In the populations observed, abnormal plants did not mature seed even though only a few specimens were seen which had no viable pollen. A comparative study of leaf and flower proteins of normal (var. grandiflorum) and abnormal (var. variegatum) plants was made. Electrophoretic analysis showed no virus but showed leaf protein abundant in the floral organs, particularly in the petals. It is suggested that the presence of these extra leaf proteins is sufficient to increase variability in the floral organs and in most cases to prevent the normal development of the sporophylls.  相似文献

Abstract

A vast network of genes is inter-linked through protein-protein interactions and is critical component of almost every biological process under physiological conditions. Any disruption of the biologically essential network leads to pathological conditions resulting into related diseases. Therefore, proper understanding of biological functions warrants a comprehensive knowledge of protein-protein interactions and the molecular mechanisms that govern such processes. The importance of protein-protein interaction process is highlighted by the fact that a number of powerful techniques/methods have been developed to understand how such interactions take place under various physiological and pathological conditions. Many of the key protein-protein interactions are known to participate in disease-associated signaling pathways, and represent novel targets for therapeutic intervention. Thus, controlling protein-protein interactions offers a rich dividend for the discovery of new drug targets. Availability of various tools to study and the knowledge of human genome have put us in a unique position to understand highly complex biological network, and the mechanisms involved therein. In this review article, we have summarized protein-protein interaction networks, techniques/methods of their binding/kinetic parameters, and the role of these interactions in the development of potential tools for drug designing.  相似文献

Among 205 ovaries with cortical stromal hyperplasia or polycystic changes, 52 showed excessive luteinization. The clinical and pathologic parameters investigated were not statistically different in the group with extensive thecomatosis. Hyperthecosis is considered as the functional variant of ovarian stromal hyperplasia which reflects a predominance of pituitary luteinizing hormone.  相似文献
