At Heron Island reef, Great Barrier Reef Australia, biomass densities and mean wet mass of Ward's damselfish Pomacentrus wardi and the jewelled blenny Salarias fasciatus were not significantly different at 2·37 v . 2·95 g m−2 and 8·7 v . 7·9 g, respectively. Whereas S. fasciatus significantly exceeded P. wardi in (1) total number of bites per day (3427 v . 1155), (2) the mass of epilithic algal community consumed per bite (2·19 v . 0·14 mg) and (3) total organic carbon consumed per day (487·31 v . 35·46 mg C m−2 day−1). Territorial behaviour differed also between the two species. Pomacentrus wardi chased from their territories a smaller proportion of blennies than roving grazers ( i.e . scarids, acanthurids, siganids and pomacentrids) relative to S. fasciatus . Salarias fasciatus chased c . 90% of other blennies from their territories, while chasing only c . 20% of all damsels that entered. Both P. wardi and S. fasciatus rarely chased non‐grazers. The chasing behaviour of S. fasciatus was size dependent, with resident fish chasing only individuals of its own family ( i.e . Blenniidae) that were the same or smaller size. Pomacentrus wardi may have tolerated S. fasciatus grazing within its territory, as it contributes to territory defence from other blennies. The possibility that the interaction between the two species is facilitative, rather than competitive, is discussed. It was concluded that salariine blennies play an important, and previously underestimated role in coral reef trophodynamics.  相似文献

The distribution and habitat associations of detrivorous blennies on a tropical coral reef were investigated at several spatial scales and compared with other fish that feed on the epilithic algal matrix to assess density and biomass contributions of small detrivorous fishes to these assemblages. At broad spatial scales total blenny abundance and biomass were highest on the tops of reefs exposed to prevailing winds. On the finer scale of microhabitat use, all species showed a preference for non-living corals, although the type of coral utilised differed between species. The high abundance of blennies on reef tops and non-living corals may be partially related to the quality and availability of detritus in these habitats. Comparisons of total blenny abundance and biomass with other territorial detrivores found that blennies accounted for approximately 60% of this functional group's density and 21% of their biomass on exposed reef tops. Overall, territorial detrivores were found to constitute approximately 37% of the density and 26% of the biomass of the detrivorous/herbivorous fish assemblage on exposed reef tops. Small detrivorous fish therefore represent a substantial proportion of fish assemblages that feed on epilithic algae and associated detritus on coral reefs.  相似文献

Normandale Creek (2531m2) provides spawning and nursery grounds for lake-run rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson, brown trout, Salmo frutta L. , and coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch (Walbaum). Upstream movements are significantly correlated with peak stream discharge (P < 0.05). In 1973–1974, 59 adult salmonids constructed 86 nests of which 60% were disturbed by re-use or sand deposition. From a calculated deposition of 90 400 ova, 483 juveniles, 6 cm in fork length ( f.l. ), were resident in the stream when estimates by electrofishing first became valid. Estimated within-stream (i.e. all sections combined) monthly densities of wild juveniles >6 cm f.l. ranged from six to 22 fish (100 m2)−1, and biomass from 1.3 to 3.1 gm−2. The highest within-section biomass was 8.3 gm−2 in November. Additions of hatchery-reared rainbow trout temporarily increased monthly within-stream juvenile density up to 23 fish (100 m2)−1, and biomass to 8.2 g m−2. Density and biomass were positively correlated (P < 0.05) with both instream and bank cover, and biomass negatively correlated (P < 0.05) with gradient. The importance of substratum and flow characteristics on juvenile density and biomass was strongly indicated although not statistically significant. Annual within-section production of juveniles > 6 cm f.l. ranged from 4.79 to 5.93 g m−2 year−1 in Sections III and IV, respectively. Inclusion of calculated probable numbers of fish < 6 cm f.l. increased within-section production from 5.93 to 18.65 g m−2 year−l in upstream Section IV.  相似文献

The present study describes the seasonal changes of the fish species composition in three areas of the main channel of the Caeté River estuary, Brazil. The fish faunas of each habitat differed in density, biomass and species composition. Mean fish density and biomass for the Caeté River estuary channel was 0·25 individuals m−2 and 0·9 g m−2 respectively. Analysis of catch data showed that the number of species, total density and total biomass differed significantly between areas and seasons. For the most important species, the mean density of Cathorops spixii, Aspredinichthys filamentosus, Aspredo sp. 2, Pimelodus blochii, Pseudauchnipterus nodosus and Macrodon ancylodon , differed significantly between seasons while the mean density of Stellifer rastrifer , Stellifer microps, Aspredo aspredo , Aspredo sp. 1 and Cynoscion acoupa did not. The mean biomass of these species, with exception of S. microps and Aspredo sp. 1, also differed significantly between seasons. In the Caeté estuary seasonal salinity fluctuations appeared to be the main factor that structured the fish assemblage in the entire estuarine system. At least 85% of the species captured by the artisanal and subsistence fisheries in the Bragantine region required estuarine conditions to complete their life cycle.  相似文献

This study investigated the spatial and temporal patterns of abundance of four substratum-associated species of Gobiidae on a heterogeneous reef flat comprised of four distinct habitat zones, and examined microhabitat use within each zone. Asterropteryx semipunctatus had the widest distribution and was the most abundant species in each habitat zone, followed by Amblygobius bynoensis , Valenciennea muralis and Amblygobius phalaena . Significant temporal and spatial differences in mean density were evident. The highest density of A. semipunctatus (312 individuals 10 m–2) was recorded in a habitat zone dominated by algal-covered rubble, whereas A. bynoensis and V. muralis were most abundant (mean summer density 5·5–5·8 individuals 10 m–2) in habitats containing both sand and hard substrata. In contrast, A. phalaena was uncommon (mean density ≤ 0·4 individuals 10 m–2) in all four habitat zones. Significant seasonal differences in abundance were due to the large influx of recruits in summer. Ontogenetic shifts in habitat use were not evident at either the macrohabitat ( i.e. among habitat zones) or microhabitat scale ( i.e. substratum use within zones). At the microhabitat scale, V. muralis consistently exhibited a strong positive association with sand and was rarely associated with hard substrata. In contrast, the two Amblygobius species were commonly associated with both sand and hard substrata, but patterns of microhabitat use differed among habitat zones. Substratum composition at the microhabitat scale may influence spatial patterns of abundance at larger spatial scales by providing essential resources and, or influencing carrying capacity and predation risk.  相似文献

Gizzard shad are primarily detritivorous in Acton Lake, a 253-ha impoundment in southwestern Ohio, U.S.A. To determine the magnitude of sediment utilization by the gizzard shad population in Acton Lake. I used data on population density and age structure, daily ration, and feeding selectivity in estimating the mass of sediments processed by shad daily from April through November. At densities of 4595–10 645 fish ha−1(wet weight biomass = 90–121 kgha 1), gizzard shad could process 3.8–23.0 kg of dry sediments ha−1 day 1. On average throughout the growing season, gizzard shad could process a dry mass of sediments each day equivalent to 13% of shad wet weight biomass. Because of the high rate of sedimentation (> 700 kg dry sediment ha−1 day−1) in Acton Lake, gizzard shad can process < 4% of the freshly deposited sediments each day, and therefore are likely to have little effect on benthic community dynamics in the system.  相似文献

The production of juvenile Atlantic salmon ( Sulmo salur L.) was investigated in 16 study sites in the upper Wye catchment during the period February 1975 to November 1976. The population structure was characterised by large numbers of 0+ fish whose abundance decreased with respect to time so that the numbers of each of the older year-classes was a function of the year-class strength of the original fry. The range of parr densities was similar to that recorded for other rivers: the estimates of 2+ smolts did not exceed about 0.04 m−2. Production ranged from 0.3 to 11.0 gm−2 a−l; Of and 1+ fish contributed over 72% and 3+ fish less than 1 % of the total annug production. The relationship between production P (gm−2 a−1) and mean biomass B (gm−2) for all yeatclasses considered separately and in combination can be expressed by the relationship P=ab . The values for a vary with age-composition and season but the values for b are not significantly different. Differences in growth rate of salmon between sites are small and differences in production result principally from differences in standing crop (biomass density). In most cases low values for salmon production can be attributed to poor spawning.  相似文献

1. To evaluate the spatial extent of the effects of forest cover on stream ecosystems, we measured algae, invertebrate, and fish biomass and invertebrate and fish community structure in 38 small first- to third-order streams in the National Capital Region of Canada along with forest cover at different spatial scales.
2. We considered 55 spatial scales of forest cover including several buffer widths (doubling 10–320 m) and lengths (doubling 10–1280 m, entire riparian distance upstream from sampling area) and entire catchments to determine which spatial scale maximized the correlation with biomass and metrics of community structure.
3. The proportion of variability in biomass and structural metrics explained by forest cover generally increased with increasing scale, suggesting that catchment-wide disturbances are the most influential determinants of benthic and fish communities.
4. Catchment forest cover explained more variation in algal (adjusted r 2   =   0.54), invertebrate (adjusted r 2   =   0.51) and fish (adjusted r 2   =   0.33) biomass than structural metrics of invertebrates and fish (adjusted r 2   =   0.08–0.27).
5. Analyses of the partial effects of forest cover at three scales (reach, riparian and the entire catchment) on biomass and community structure metrics identified catchment and reach scales as being most influential and never detected a significant partial effect of forest cover at the riparian scale.
6. These results suggest that maintenance or protection of reach and riparian buffers alone will not sufficiently protect stream function and structure from catchment-wide impacts.  相似文献

The impact of the crayfish Orconectes virilis on aquatic macrophytes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
SUMMARY. 1. The impact of crayfish on the biomass, density and shoot morphology of four submersed plant species was examined under semi-natural conditions. Male or female crayfish ( Orconectes virilis ) were held for 5 weeks at biomasses of 0, 5, 10 or 18 g m−2 (live weight) in twelve plastic pools (4.67 m2, surface area) containing Potamogeton richardsonii, Myriophyllum exalbescens, Nuphar variegatum and Sparganium eurycarpum .
2. Crayfish significantly affected biomass, density and/or shoot morphology of all four macrophyte species. Differences in the effect of crayfish on macrophyte growth were related to plant species, crayfish sex and activity, and the abundance of alternative foods.
3. The effect of female crayfish on macrophyte growth was generally stimulatory. Myriophyllum and Potamogeton biomass, Potamogeton density and Myriophyllum length increased in the presence of female crayfish, possibly due to the reduction in herbivorous snails as a result of crayfish predation. In contrast, plant growth decreased in the presence of male crayfish: Myriophyllum, Nuphar and Potamogeton biomass, Myriophyllum and Sparganium density, and Sparganium and Poiamogeton length were reduced at male crayfish biomasses between 5 and 18 g m−2.
4. These results indicate that even relatively low densities of crayfish can greatly affect the growth of submersed aquatic plants. Because of their ability to modify aquatic macrophyte, macroinvertebrate and, ultimately, fish communities, the introduction of crayfish into lakes where they do not occur could have a major effect on the structure and composition of the littoral zone.  相似文献

Scales were valid for age determination of pike-cichlid Crenicichla lepidota Heckel in two Brazilian streams, since, for every age-class, annual rings (annuli) were formed once a year, in August. Back-calculated Jengths-for-age coincided with those obtained by inspecting the monthly length-frequency distributions. Only 11 reproductive females were captured (length range 9.6–16 cm, age 1+ and 2 + ) and their fecundity ( F ) increased with fish length ( L ) according to: F= 2.4027 L2.3631. Average annual density and biomass in four localities of Zanga do Campus were 2194, 1676, 1824 and 1071 individuals ha−1 and 17.2, 12.1, 13.8 and 18.7 kg ha−1and about 1000 individuals ha−1 and 8.5 kg ha−1 in three combined sites of Zanga do Barbará. The annual production ranged between 18.5 and 32.7 kg ha−1 a −1 in the first stream and 8.7 kg ha −1a −1 in the other. Feeding tactics differed between streams and age-classes (0+ v . 1+/2+). In winter, the 0+ age-class in Zanga do Campus fed mainly upon Ephemeroptera (Baetidae) but in other months also fed on zooplankton. In winter, these age-classes in Zanga do Barbara preyed upon benthic species but the contribution of different taxa varied between months. In January, these fish preyed exclusively upon Chydoridae and fish. The effects of a severe drought (November-February) upon these parameters are discussed.  相似文献

Backcalculated lengths at the end of the first growth season in wild Atlantic salmon Salmo salar differed significantly between parr smolting at age 1, 2 and 3 years over a period of 11 years (i.e. 1983–1993). Mean body lengths of the respective age groups at the end of the first growth period were 11·1, 6·2 and 4·7 cm, respectively. The mean percentage distribution of fish smolting at age 1, 2 and 3 was 14, 78 and 7%, and the mean smolt age was 1·95 years. Mean lengths at smolting of age groups 1, 2 and 3 were 13·6, 15·8 and 17·5 cm, respectively. Females outnumbered males among the downstream migrating smolts with a mean sex ratio (females/ males) estimated at 1·61, with a significant female surplus in 7 of the 11 years sampled. Of the smolts sampled, 14% exhibited enlarged gonads indicative of parr maturation, and all were males (37% of the parr males sampled). Mean annual smolt density from 1975 to 1996 was 13·4 individuals 100 m−2 ranging between 0·3–31 smolts 100 m−2. Mean densities (100 m−2) of the smolts aged 1, 2 and 3 years were 1·5, 9·3 and 0·9 fish, respectively. Mean annual biomass for the 22-year period (1975–1996) was estimated at 437 g 100 m−2, with a range of variation from 136 to 683 g 100 m−2. Smolt age 2 made up 81% of the mean annual biomass (355 g 100 m−2) and smolt age 1 and 3, 8% (35 g 100 m−2) and 11% (47 g 100 m−2), respectively.  相似文献

The growth rate of 1980 eel Anguilla anguilla from 15 sites in the Severn system varied between 16·4 and 27·9 mm year-1, density from 0·12 to 1·14 m-2 and biomass from 2·56 to 25·24 g m-2. There was no significant relationship between growth rate and density or biomass ( P > 0·05).  相似文献

In terms of biomass, the three dominant fish species in the Huizache-Caimanero lagoon system during 1975–76 were the mullet Mugil curema , the anchovy, Anchoa panamensis and the catfish, Galeichthys caerulescens . Peaks in the abundance of the secondary predators occurred at the end of the wet season (September-October), while pelagic forms and members of the centropomid-gerreid association (Warburton 1968a ) were most common during November-February and December-February respectively. Twelve species, including the ten having the highest overall mean biomass, were selected for growth and production studies. Lagoon-specific differences in the patterns of growth and recruitment of several species were observed. The total estimated annual fish production in Caimanero lagoon was 34·48 g m−2 y−1, with M. curema contributing 9·36 g m−2, A. panamensis 9·24 g m−2 and G. caerulescens 6·15 g m−2 (maximum estimate). Mean turnover ratios (annual production: mean biomass) were 3·25 (demersal species), 8·44 (pelagic species) and 4·48 (all species). Implications for possible fishery and aquacultural expansion are discussed.  相似文献

The population density, age structure, biomass, growth and production of brown trout were investigated in four tributaries of the upper River Wye. The populations at each site were largely maintained by immigration from nursery areas. Abundance of separate year classes at sites on the three largest tributaries reached a peak at age 2+. On the smallest stream numbers reached a peak at 1+. Recruitment occurred throughout the year but decreased with age of year classes. Maximum O+ densities ranged from 0.04 to 0.89 m−2, and >0+ densities from 0.13 to 0.59 m−2. Average total biomass in 1975 ranged from 2.6 to 14.2 g m−2. Within the study sites annual trout production in 1975 ranged from 2.9–19.7 g m−2. Production values were dependent on age structure and population mobility at the study sites. In the three largest streams 2+ and 3+ fish contributed 66.3–88.3% of total production whilst 1+ and 2+ fish contributed 74.5–84.5 % of the total in the smallest stream. The mobile (non-resident) component of the population accounted for up to 60–70% of production at certain times of the year, but over the year (1976) accounted for =30 % of total production. The resident component of the highest annual production value (19.7 g m−2) was estimated to be between 15.0 and 18.2 g m−2.  相似文献

Yolk-sac pike fry were stocked at densities of 0.74 – 81.4 m−2 in two ponds, each divided into eight sectors (mean area 155.8 m2). Growth and survival were recorded from May to December 1985. The growth rates were variable within each sector. The size-range of sampled fish increased throughout the year, but showed no significant correlation with density. Fry survival was initially density-independent but switched by late June/July to density-dependence, ranging from 0.5 to 43.6% of initial stocking numbers. The highest mean daily mortality rates occurred during May-July. The final survival in December ranged between sectors from 0.059 to 11.25% of the starting stock densities. The final biomass per unit area of pike surviving in December was not related to initial stocking density. In Pond 1 the mean biomass produced was 2.21 gm−2 and in Pond 2 was 3.49gm−2.
Pike fry < 30 mm fed only on invertebrates; those 30–100 mm took a wide range of invertebrates, cyprinids. sticklebacks and other pike. Cannibalism occurred at most densities between 5.45 and 81.4 fish m−2.
Where attempts are made to increase pike production in managed populations by releasing small fry, an upper stock density of 5 fry m−2 is advised if large, density-dependent mortalities are to be avoided.  相似文献

The collapse of Caribbean coral reefs has been attributed in part to historic overfishing, but whether fish assemblages can recover and how such recovery might affect the benthic reef community has not been tested across appropriate scales. We surveyed the biomass of reef communities across a range in fish abundance from 14 to 593 g m−2, a gradient exceeding that of any previously reported for coral reefs. Increased fish biomass was correlated with an increased proportion of apex predators, which were abundant only inside large marine reserves. Increased herbivorous fish biomass was correlated with a decrease in fleshy algal biomass but corals have not yet recovered.  相似文献

Salaria fluviatilis in the Júcar river basin was found only in the Júcar River itself, the tributaries Cabriel and Escalona, and the irrigation channel Acequia Real. Blenny density varied from 0·2 to 3·1 ind m−2. Sites with blennies had significantly lower coliform counts than those without blennies.  相似文献

Standard lengths of cyprinids at several sites in the River Great Ouse, England, were compared between catches taken using a conventional 15 × 3 m micromesh seine (pore diameter 2 mm) and using point sampling by electrofishing (PSE). No statistically significant differences in sites were found in six out of 10 trials. In nine out of 10 trials, the difference between the mean lengths differed by <1 mm. No serial bias was found between PSE and seine netting for cyprinid fishes between 14 and 100 mm SL, although variation between size classes was high, owing to small sample sizes. The coefficient of variation in fish length with size tended to increase with the age of 0+ Rutilus rutilus . The relationship between sample size (n) and variance ( s2 ) was explained by s 2=13·9 n −1·24. Sampling more than 30 fish resulted in little increase in precision. The relationship between the mean catch per site (̄) and the variance of the mean estimate was log s 2=1·6039 log ̄ +0·973. The number of samples required to estimate density within a given variance range was: n =9·33 ̄ 1·6–2 CV̄ −2. Given the high variance-mean ratio, great care should be taken when interpreting density data collected using PSE, and 50 point samples is the minimum required for density estimation.  相似文献

In the oxidative muscles (musculi laterales superficiales) of crucian carp Carassius carassius acclimated for 6 weeks to either 5 or 25° C, the volume density and the surface density of fibres per tissue did not differ significantly between the control and experimental groups. The correlation ratio (μ2) for these values was below 50, 39·3 and 43·9 respectively. After acclimation to 5° C, the surface density of outer mitochondrial membrane per fibre increased significantly from 0·93 to 1·23m2 cm−3 in the summer population but dropped from 0·94 to 0·67 m2 cm−3 in the winter population. The surface density of outer mitochondrial membrane per mitochondrion increased from 3·24 to 4·52 m2 cm−3 in summer fish. After acclimation to 25° C, the surface density of inner mitochondrial membranes per muscle fibre decreased from 4·04 to 1·79 m2 cm−3 in summer fish and from 3·86 to 1·07 m2 cm−3 in winter fish. The surface density of inner mitochondrial membranes per mitochondrion increased from 14·17 to 15·60 m2cm−3 in summer fish but dropped from 13·91 to 10·67 m2 cm−3 in winter fish. Correlation matrices demonstrate a negative correlation of the surface density of outer mitochondrial membrane per mitochondrion with the volume density of mitochondria per fibre and temperature, suggesting cold-induced proliferation of small mitochondria. It was concluded that short-term cold acclimation increased surface area of the inner mitochondrial membranes in summer fish.  相似文献

During this study, anglers caught over 580 kg of fish, comprising over 29 500 individuals of 14 species. Nine times as many gudgeon, Gobio gobio , as roach, Rutilus rutilus , were caught. Gudgeon represented 35.94% of the total catch weight compared with 44.64% for roach. The mean total catch per man-hour was 8.9 fish and the mean catch rate was 176 g per man-hour. Population estimates for fish longer than 12 cm for all species other than gudgeon and bleak, Alburnus alburnus , gave fish densities of 0.21 fish m−2, the roach population was 0.15 m−2, and that for dace Leuciscus leuciscus , 0.02 m−2. The population density for all sizes of all species caught was estimated to be 2.25 fish m−2.
The fish biomass available to the angler was 447 kg ha−2. The rate of exploitation of the fishery over the period of sampling was high at 17%, representing an annual exploitation rate of 94%.  相似文献
