From "Rights" to "Ritual": AIDS Activism in South Africa   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this article, I investigate how the moral politics of HIV/AIDS activism in South Africa is contributing toward new forms of citizenship that are concerned with both rights-based struggles and with creating collectively shared meanings of the extreme experiences of illness and stigmatization of individual HIV/AIDS sufferers. I argue that it is precisely the extremity of the "near death" experiences of full-blown AIDS, and the profound stigma and "social death" associated with the later stages of the disease, that produce the conditions for HIV/AIDS survivors' commitment to "new life" and social activism. It is the activist mediation and retelling of these traumatic experiences that facilitates HIV/AIDS activist commitment and grassroots mobilization. It is also the profound negativity of stigma and social death that animates the activist's construction of a new positive HIV-positive identity and understanding of what it means to be a citizen–activist and member of a social movement.  相似文献

Bone densitometric data are often difficult to interpret in children and adolescents because of large inter- and intraindividual variations in bone size. Here, we propose a functional approach to bone densitometry that addresses two questions: is bone strength normally adapted to the largest physiological loads, that is, muscle force? Is muscle force adequate for body size? The theoretical background for this approach is provided by the mechanostat theory, which proposes that bones adapt their strength to keep the strain caused by physiological loads close to a set point. Because the largest physiological loads are caused by muscle contractions, there should be a close relationship between bone strength and muscle force or size. The proposed two-step diagnostic algorithm requires a measure of muscle force or size and a measure of bone mineral content (BMC) at a corresponding location. The results can be combined into four diagnostic groups. In the first situation, muscle force or size is adequate for height. If the skeleton is adapted normally to the muscle system, the result is interpreted as "normal". If it is lower than expected for muscle force or size, a "primary bone defect" is diagnosed. In the second situation, muscle force or size is too low for height. Even if the skeleton is adapted adequately to the decreased mechanical challenge, this means that bone mass and presumably strength are still too low for body height. Therefore, a "secondary bone defect" is diagnosed. It is hoped that the more detailed insights thus gained could help to devise targeted strategies for the prevention and treatment of pediatric bone diseases.  相似文献

The concept of "nerves" is an integral component of the language of distress found in a number of societies. Individuals, however, often extend its meaning well beyond the realm of suffering. In this article, I examine some Sicilian-Canadian uses of "nerves" from a Pirandellian perspective. This, I believe, gives us an insight into how people (1) make use of illness narratives to give meaning to their life experiences, and (2) attempt to influence the thought and behavior of significant others. In the process, I address the question how do we move away from anthropological definitions and explanations that tend to simplify or mask some of the rich complexities surrounding the meaning(s) of "folk" concepts?  相似文献

Introduction: From the "New Ecology" to the New Ecologies   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
An earlier ecological anthropology defined its project within the compass of the idealism v. materialism debate. Culture was an adaptive tool, instrumental rather than formal; it was intelligible with respect to its material effects, not—as the idealists would maintain—in terms of itself, as an autonomous, self-determining order of reality. This argument was mounted with respect to bounded, stable, self-regulating, local, or at best regional entities and the environment they inhabited. All of the premises of the earlier ecology have since been challenged, and today's ecologies—symbolic, historical, and political—radically depart from the reductions and elisions of the ecological anthropology of the past. In particular, the new ecologies override the dichotomies that informed and enlivened the debates of the past—nature/culture, idealism/materialism—and they are informed by the literature on transnationalist flows and local-global articulations. This introduction positions Rappaport's work within this historical shift from a polarized field of mutually exclusive frameworks to today's synthetic new ecologies and their antireductive materialism. Rappaport's work, produced over three decades, serves, in and through its own transformations, as a bridge between the reductive materialism of the past and a new-materialist ecology. Living organisms of all types produce a large repertoire of gene-encoded, net positively charged, antimicrobial peptides as part of their innate immunity to microbial invasion. Despite significant variations in composition, length and secondary structure most antimicrobial peptides are active in micromolar concentrations, suggesting a common general mechanism for their mode of action. Many antimicrobial peptides bind bacterial phospholipid membranes up to a threshold concentration, followed by membrane permeation/disintegration (the "carpet" mechanism). Recent data suggest that the details of the permeation pathways may vary for different peptides and are assigned to different modes of action. Accumulating data reveal that the molecular basis for cell selectivity is the ability of peptides to specifically bind the negatively charged bacterial membrane, as well as their oligomeric state in solution and in the membrane. Based on the "carpet" mechanism and the role of the peptide oligomeric state, a novel group of diastereomeric (containing D- and L-amino acids) antimicrobial peptides were developed. These peptides may serve as promising templates for the future designs of antimicrobial peptides.  相似文献

New ideas in science frequently arise from neglected or distorted antecedents. This essay deals with the idea of biochemical unity, encapsulated in Jacques Monod's well-known phrase, dating from 1954: "Anything found to be true of E. coli must also be true of elephants." An earlier version of this phrase,--"From the elephant to butyric acid bacterium--it is all the same!"--was coined in 1926 by the Dutch microbiologist Albert Jan Kluyver. In that year Kluyver and his associate Hendrick Jean Louis Donker published a celebrated paper, "Unity in Biochemistry." The concept of biochemical unity had many antecedents, but these had never caught on. The Kluyver-Donker paper has often been regarded to provide a boost to biochemical and especially to microbiological thinking. Its interpretations and misinterpretations represent an encapsulated history of biochemistry. The present paper examines the history of the concept of biochemical unity from before to beyond Kluyver, investigates the two "elephant" phrases and their possible relationships, and ends with a discussion of the attractiveness of unifying ideas in science.  相似文献

The Saint Petersburg Society of Naturalists has reinstated the Alexander O. Kowalevsky Medal. This article announces the winners of the first medals and briefly reviews the achievements of A.O. Kowalevsky, the Russian comparative embryologist whose studies on amphioxus, tunicates and germ layer homologies pioneered evolutionary embryology and confirmed the evolutionary continuity between invertebrates and vertebrates. In re-establishing this international award, the Society is pleased to recognize both the present awardees and the memory of Kowalevsky, whose work pointed to that we now call evolutionary developmental biology.  相似文献

A wide variety of proteins have been shown to recognize and bind to specific amino acid sequences on other proteins. These sequences can be readily identified using combinatorial peptide libraries. However, peptides containing these preferred sequences ("consensus sequence peptides") typically display only modest affinities for the consensus sequence-binding site on the intact protein. In this report, we describe a parallel synthesis strategy that transforms consensus sequence peptides into high affinity ligands. The work described herein has focused on the Lck SH2 domain, which binds the consensus peptide acetyl-Tyr(P)-Glu-Glu-Ile-amide with a K(D) of 1.3 micrometer. We employed a strategy that creates a series of spatially focused libraries that challenge specific subsites on the target protein with a diverse array of functionality. The final lead compound identified in this study displayed a 3300-fold higher affinity for the Lck SH2 domain than the starting consensus sequence peptide.  相似文献
