Correlation between extreme frequencies of the electrocorticogram and firing rate of visual cortical neurons were studied in rabbits in three qualitatively different cases. First, with synchronized recordings, coincidence in the time and direction of changes in these values, which were comparatively infrequent during recording and prolonged in duration (to about 1–10 min). Second, in the absence of appreciable changes in levels correlation between the fluctuating values of the mean firing rates and extreme values of the electrocorticograms, calculated for 5 sec intervals, was determined by the use of cross-correlation coefficients. Finally, the fastest changes in mean extreme frequencies and firing rates connected with a change in the phases of the delta-waves, the duration of which was 0.1–1.0 sec, were studied. In all three cases significant positive correlation was found on the average between the extreme frequencies and firing rates. It is concluded that the extreme frequencies of the electrocorticogram are an indicator of the averaged unit activity and can be used for its evaluation.Medical Institute, Kaunas, Lithuania. In acute experiments on cats the cortical projection connections of one hemisphere were divided, and the principal characteristics of spontaneous unit activity were studied in the lateral geniculate bodies (LGB) and visual cortex (area 17). After the operation the same types of spontaneous activity were found in these structures as in the intact structures. However, the number of spontaneously active cells in the structures on the side of the operation was considerably reduced. In the isolated visual cortex there was a redistribution of the relative percentage of neurons with spontaneous activity in the various layers: these cells were most numerous in layers IV–V, whereas in the normal cortex they are more numerous in layers III–IV. The mean firing rate of all types of cells was reduced in the isolated cortex. In LGB on the side of the operation a relative decrease in the number of cells with a high firing rate was observed.Institute of Experimental Medicine, Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, Leningrad. The neuronal and total surface activity of the cortical representation of the motor analyzer in the region of the posterior sigmoid gyrus of the cat brain in response to rhythmical light, sound, and electrical stimuli and their complexes was analyzed. Two groups of neurons were found, of which the first is characterized by a gradual decrease in the number of peaks in the response and by their subsequent disappearance and the second by the absence of a discharge in response to stimulation and by its development before the application of the next stimulus. The first group was comprised of neurons which do not have background activity and the second was made up of neurons with a background activity of 0.4–3.7 imp/sec. This reorganization of the activity of cortical neurons in response to rhythmical stimulation is considered to be a habituation phenomenon.A. A. Zhdanov Leningrad State University. Motor unit (MU) potentials were recorded from the human rectus femoris and biceps brachii muscles during prolonged isometric contraction. Interspike intervals and intervals between adjacent discharges of 2 MUs (cross-intervals of MU pairs) were measured. Synchronization was expressed by the following criteria: the cross-interval histogram; comparison of the number of coincidences between discharges of 2 MUs observed experimentally with the mean probable number of coincidences; the frequency of appearance of N successive coincidences of spikes from different MU pairs; comparison of the mean duration of interspike intervals preceding a synchronized discharge with the mean duration of the remaining interspike intervals for the same MU. For some MU pairs the number of coinciding spikes was greater than the expected number of random coincidences. Synchronized spikes could form a train of consecutive coincidences. The mean duration of interspike intervals preceding a synchronized discharge was somewhat less than the mean duration of the remaining interspike intervals for MUs forming a synchronously firing pair.Institute of Problems of Information Transmission, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Moscow. In acute experiments on anesthetized rabbits we investigated the spike activity of cold fibers of the infraorbital nerve during a steady decrease in skin temperature from 39 to 7°C at a rate of 0.8 ± 0.05°/min. Analysis of interspike intervals (ISI) in the firing of receptors demonstrated that in the investigated range of skin temperatures the ISI histograms changed significantly several times, reflecting a shift in the pattern of firing. In addition, the reactions of each cold thermoreceptor had individual aspects, which lays the foundation for discussion of the perception of various characteristics of the temperature stimulus of the set of thermoreceptors.I. Responses of 246 auditory cortical neurons to paired and repetitive stimulation of geniculo-cortical fibers were studied in experiments on cats immobilized with tubocurarine. The refractory period (RP) varied from 1 to 200 msec in different neurons. For neurons excited antidromically it varied from 1 to 3 msec. Among neurons excited monosynaptically there were some with a short (1.3–6 msec), medium, (8–16 msec) or long (30–100 msec) refractory period. Most neurons excited polysynaptically had a RP of mean length. RPs 30–200 msec in length were due to inhibition arising in the neuron after conditioning stimulation. In some neurons, after a short (1.5–2.0 msec) initial period of refractoriness there was a temporary (for 2–3 msec) recovery of responsiveness, followed by another period of ineffectiveness of the testing stimulus lasting 30–100 msec. Barbiturates selectively inhibited long-latency unit responses in the auditory cortex and during their action the number of responding neurons with a mean RP decreased sharply. The results demonstrate functional heterogeneity of auditory cortical neurons responding to an incoming volley of afferent impulses.A. A. Responses of 251 neurons in the anterior part of the middle suprasylvian gyrus to stimulation of primary sensory (auditory, visual, somatosensory) areas and also to acoustic, visual, and somatosensory stimuli were studied in acute experiments on cats anesthetized with chloralose (40 mg/kg) and pentobarbital (20 mg/kg). Three groups of neurons were distinguished by their responses to stimulation of the primary sensory areas: those responding by an increased firing rate (117) or by inhibition (35) and those not responding (99). Responses of 193 neurons to stimulation of the peripheral afferent systems were analyzed. Neurons of the parietal associative cortex responded more frequently to cortical stimulation than to peripheral. By the duration of the latent period of their response to cortical stimulation the neurons were divided into three groups: those with short (less than 20 msec), medium (20–30 msec), and long latent periods (over 30 msec). The first group was the largest.Kemerovo State Medical Institute. Translated from Neirofiziologiya, Vol. 4, No. 5, pp. 524–530, September–October, 1972.  相似文献

Seven healthy subjects were investigated in cyclic ramp-and-hold long lasting isometric contractions. Wire branched electrodes were used for selective recording of single motor unit (MU) potentials from m. biceps brachii. MU behaviour was defined in terms of recruitment/derecruitment thresholds (RT and DT) and the duration of interspike intervals (ISI). A total of 63 MUs was investigated: 40 units were active from the beginning of the task performance and another 23 were recruited later. There were no changes in the recruitment pattern of MUs with fatigue development - a short first ISI followed by a very long second one and an almost constant firing rate after this transient phase. The tendency of RT to gradually decrease dominates the results. Thus, the required constant rate of force increase with fatigue development was maintained mostly by the mechanisms of space coding (i.e., decrease of RT and recruitment of additional MUs). Oppositely, the time behaviour of the DT changes was not uniform and rate coding was an essential mechanism in the adaptation of MU activity to muscle fatigue during relaxation phases. The recruitment pattern and fatigue related behaviour of the additionally recruited MUs were similar to those of MUs active from the first cycle of the motor task performance.  相似文献

Dependence of the temporal structure of the spike discharge of a neuron in a weakly interacting network on the characteristics of excitatory and inhibitory input flows and on cell parameters was analyzed by a mathematical model. The intensity of communication between individual neurons corresponded to the intensity of synaptic communication between real spinal neurons. The temporal course of trace and accommodation processes in the model was similar to that of these processes in real spinal neurons. Connection of inhibitory inputs and an increase in the intensity of their influences were shown to be equivalent to a decrease in the intensity of excitatory input flows. Changes in cell parameters had a significant effect on the spike discharge only in the case of weak input influences (the ratio of the amplitude of the combined ESP evoked by the input spike train to the threshold value of membrane potential at rest was about 1.2:1.0 to 1.4:1.0). An increase in the input flow intensity led to considerable reorganization of the firing pattern: Mean values of interspike intervals and their fluctuations were reduced, histograms of interspike intervals became more symmetrical, and periodic waves appeared on the autocorrelation histograms. It is concluded on the basis of these results and of data in the literature that the main factor determining reorganization of the temporal structure of unit activity in a network of weakly interacting cells is the intensity of the input flow.A. Summary Cortical microtubules and cortical microfilaments were visualized in cells ofMicrasterias pinnatifida treated by freeze-substitution, and the pattern of their distribution was reconstructed from serial sections. Most cortical microtubules accompanied the long microfilaments that ran parallel to the microtubules. Cortical microfilaments not accompanied by the microtubules were also found. They were short and slightly curved. Both types of cortical microfilament were not grouped into bundles, and were 6–7 nm in diameter, a value that corresponds to the diameter of filaments of F-actin.  相似文献

Changes accompanying long-lasting intermittent muscle contractions (30%–50% of the maximal) were investigated by tracing the activity of 38 motor units (MU) of the human biceps brachii muscle recorded from fine-wire branched electrodes. The motor task was a continuous repetition of ramp-and-hold cycles of isometric flexion contractions. During ramp-up phases a significant decline in recruitment thresholds was found with no changes in the discharge pattern. During ramp-down phases the unchanged mean value of derecruitment thresholds during the task was accompanied by increased duration of the last two interspike intervals (ISI). These findings would suggest that during fatigue development the main compensatory mechanism during ramp-up contractions is space coding while for ramp-down contractions it is rate coding. During the steady-state phases the mean value of ISI, as well as the firing variability, had increased by the end of the task in most of the MU investigated . In addition 17 recruited MU were also investigated. These units revealed a lower initial discharge rate and a faster decrease in the mean discharge rate with the development of fatigue. The gradual reduction of the recruitment threshold of already active MU and the recruitment of new units demonstrated an increased excitability of the motorneuron pool during fatigue. A typical recruitment pattern (a first short ISI followed by a long one) was observed during ramp-up contractions in units active from the very beginning of the task, as well as during sustained contractions at the onset of the stable discharge of the additionally recruited MU. The pattern of neuronal spiking of cortical neurons was investigated in an awake nonimmobilized rabbit. Thecharacteristics of the interspike intervals (total numberof intervals, mean interval, mean-square deviation) and of the burst (group) activity (burst number, mean spikefrequency in a burst, mean spike number for a burst, meanburst duration) were considered. Nonlinear relationshipbetween the values of mean interspike intervals and thenumber of spike bursts was found. A number of functionswere applied to describe the observed phenomena. On thebasis of regression analysis two populations of corticalneurons with distinct neuronal spiking patterns wereidentified. Bursts occur at a higher rate in one populationthan the other, although both populations exhibit burstsand are otherwise indistinguishable.  相似文献

In cats, we studied the influences of stimulation of the periaqueductal gray (PAG) and locus coeruleus (LC) on postsynaptic processes evoked in neurons of the somatosensory cortex by stimulation of nociceptive (intensive stimulation of the tooth pulp) and non-nociceptive (moderate stimulations of the infraorbital nerve and ventroposteromedial nucleus of the thalamus) afferent inputs. Twelve cells activated exclusively by nociceptors and 16 cells activated by both nociceptive and non-nociceptive influences (hereafter, nociceptive and convergent neurons, respectively) were recorded intracellularly. In neurons of both groups, responses to nociceptive stimulation (of sufficient intensity) looked like an EPSP-spike-IPSP (the latter, of significant duration, up to 200 msec) complex. Electrical stimulation of the PAG (which could itself evoke activation of the cortical neurons under study) resulted in long-term suppression of synaptic responses evoked by excitation of nociceptors (inhibition reached its maximum at a test interval of 600 to 800 msec). We observed a certain parallelism between conditioning influences of PAG activation and effects of systemic injections of morphine. Isolated stimulation of LC by a short high-frequency train of stimuli evoked primary excitatory responses (complex EPSPs) in a part of the examined cortical neurons, while in other cells high-amplitude and long-lasting IPSP (up to 120 msec) were observed. Independently of the type of the primary response to PAG stimulation, the latter resulted in long-term (several seconds) suppression of the responses evoked in cortical cells by stimulation of the nociceptive inputs. The mechanisms of modulatory influences coming from opioidergic and noradrenergic brain systems to somatosensory cortex neurons activated due to excitation of high-threshold (nociceptive) afferent inputs are discussed.Neirofiziologiya/Neurophysiology, Vol. 37, No. 1, pp. 61–73, January–February, 2005.  相似文献

The effect of inhibition on the firing variability is examined in this paper using the biologically-inspired temporal noisy-leaky integrator (TNLI) neuron model. The TNLI incorporates hyperpolarising inhibition with negative current pulses of controlled shapes and it also separates dendritic from somatic integration. The firing variability is observed by looking at the coefficient of variation (C(V)) (standard deviation/mean interspike interval) as a function of the mean interspike interval of firing (delta tM) and by comparing the results with the theoretical curve for random spike trains, as well as looking at the interspike interval (ISI) histogram distributions. The results show that with 80% inhibition, firing at high rates (up to 200 Hz) is nearly consistent with a Poisson-type variability, which complies with the analysis of cortical neuron firing recordings by Softky and Koch [1993, J. Neurosci. 13(1) 334-530]. We also demonstrate that the mechanism by which inhibition increases the C(V) values is by introducing more short intervals in the firing pattern as indicated by a small initial hump at the beginning of the ISI histogram distribution. The use of stochastic inputs and the separation of the dendritic and somatic integration which we model in TNLI, also affect the high firing, near Poisson-type (explained in the paper) variability produced. We have also found that partial dendritic reset increases slightly the firing variability especially at short ISIs.  相似文献

Subcutaneous injection of substance P to rabbits in a dose of 250 mcg/kg elicited a transitory disappearance of motor reactions to painful reinforcing stimuli and a reduction of their probability to reinforced and inhibitory light flashes, as well as a protracted heart rate increase and decrease of respiration rate. One third of the neurones recorded decreased their background firing level and or excitatory components of the reactions to reinforcement and conditioned light flashes. The decrease was most distinctly seen in the sensorimotor cortex and less pronounced in the visual cortical area and hippocampus. The influence of the substance P on different types of cortical inhibition was not the same. Tonic inhibition of neuronal activity in response to reinforcement was enhanced. Bioelectrical parameters which reflect an enhancement of inhibitory hyperpolarization during elaboration of internal inhibition (i.e. inhibitory firing delays and corresponding background and evoked slow potentials oscillations) were not changed.  相似文献

Extracellular recordings were made from the cat intact neocortex and guinea-pig neocortical slices during microiontophoretic application of amino acid neurotransmitters. Spike train autocorrelation analysis showed a high stability of firing patterns in the intact neocortex. When excitation of a cell was increased in a step-wise manner with glutamate iontophoresis only an enhancement of the rate of firing was observed. The rhythmic component, which was mainly due to periodic multiple discharges, remained up to the highest firing frequencies. In contrast to the in vivo observation, glutamate, aspartate or K+ iontophoresis in cortical slices resulted in firing pattern alternations (always from bursts or irregular activity to regular spike firing) as well as an increase in firing rate. In slices the periodic component was typically due to single-spike regularity and its frequency rose with an increase of firing rate. The comparison of autocorrelogram alternations in vivo and in vitro suggests that the temporal organization of spike trains in the intact cortex is under tight external control and is defined mainly by neuronal interactions, whereas virtually all the neurons in vitro are very sensitive to the same iontophoretic influences and their individual outputs easily change according to the excitation (depolarization) level. The coincidence of the lowest frequencies of single-spike regularity in the in vitro preparation (5–7 Hz and 8–10 Hz) with theta- and alpha-rhythms in the electroencephalogram (EEG), and with single unit firing rhythmicity in the whole brain, may represent the basis of a unit-circuit resonance and provide a high stability of these EEG-rhythms.Abbreviations ACF autocorrelation function - BFA background firing activity - EEG electroencephalogram  相似文献

Background firing activity was examined in 240 neurons belonging to the thalamic nucleus reticularis (Rt) in the unanesthetized human brain by extracellular microelectrode recording techniques during stereotaxic surgery for dyskinesia. The cellular organization of Rt was shown to be nonuniform, and distinguished by the presence of three types of neuron: one with arrhythmic single discharge (A-type, 40%), another with rhythmic (2–5 Hz) generation of short high-frequency (of up to 500/sec) burster discharges (B-type, 49%) and a third with aperiodic protracted high-frequency (of up to 500/sec) bursting discharges separated by "silent" intervals of a constant duration of 80–150 msec (i.e., C-type, 11%). Differences between the background activity pattern of these cell types during loss of consciousness under anesthesia are described. Tonic regulation of neuronal type was not pronounced but a tendency was noticed in the cells towards a consistent rise in firing rate, rhythmic frequency and variability, etc. in both A and B units, especially in the latter. Findings pointing to the absence of a direct relationship between rhythmic activity in the Rt and parkinsonian tremor were confirmed. Background activity in B-type cells was found to increase and then stabilize with a rise in the degree of tremor. The nature of regular bursting activity patterns in B and C neurons is discussed in the light of our findings.Institute of Chemical Physics, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Moscow. Several developmental stages of primary roots of 13 species of Linum were studied. The basic pattern of root apex organization in three species consisted of a single tier of cortical initials. Ten species had a basic pattern of two tiers of cortical initials. Variations, manifested by either an increase or a decrease in the tiers of cortical initials, were observed in some roots in those species that had a basic pattern of two tiers of cortical initials. Although these variations were interpreted as being ontogenetic, there was no total reorganization of the root apex. There was anatomical and cytological evidence that a quiescent center is established in Linum roots.  相似文献

The results of a computerized statistical analysis of 366 realizations of spontaneous spike activity of 181 neurons in the primary auditory cortex (area 50) of waking cats at rest and during defensive conditioning are described. In both situations the parameters of spontaneous activity of most neurons differed from those of a random flow. Conditioning led, on the one hand, to a stable increase in the frequency of spontaneous activity in intertrial periods and, on the other hand, judging from changes in the mean firing rate, the coefficients of variation of the length of the interspike intervals, the histograms of their distribution, and also the increase in the number of neurons with different forms of correlation between interspike intervals, to an increase in its stability (degree of organization).A. The background activity of a cortical neural network is modeled by a homogeneous integrate-and-fire network with unreliable inhibitory synapses. For the case of fast synapses, numerical and analytical calculations show that the network relaxes into a stationary state of high attention. The majority of the neurons has a membrane potential just below the threshold; as a consequence the network can react immediately – on the time scale of synaptic transmission- on external pulses. The neurons fire with a low rate and with a broad distribution of interspike intervals. Firing events of the total network are correlated over short time periods. The firing rate increases linearly with external stimuli. In the limit of infinitely large networks, the synaptic noise decreases to zero. Nevertheless, the distribution of interspike intervals remains broad. Action Editor: Misha Tsodyks  相似文献
