Timing of birth and food availability may select for biased offspring sex ratios when they differentially affect the reproductive value of male and female young. Here we show that early hatching date enhances more the probability of male Eurasian kestrels (Falco tinnunculus) to breed as one-year-old than that of females in a Finnish population. This rarely documented phenomenon has been previously observed in a kestrel population in the Netherlands. As kestrels in the Finnish population are migratory, our results refute the hypothesis that early-fledged males would have an advantage for early breeding only in resident populations. Contrary to the predictions, the Finnish population showed no change in brood sex ratio during the breeding season in a long-term data from 8years. As far as we know, this is the first demonstration that biased sex allocation may not occur even when it would appear to be adaptive. This result is different from the Dutch kestrel population, in which the season began with a bias towards males and ended with a bias in favour of females. We suggest that high inter-annual variation in food abundance in Finland might reduce selection for a sex ratio trend.  相似文献

The Mauritius Kestrel Falco punctatus, once the rarest kestrel worldwide, became an icon of bird conservation after it recovered from four to six individuals in 1974 to some 800 by 2005 following intense conservation management. Its population however then halved within about a decade prompting a re-evaluation of the IUCN status and up listing of the species in 2014 and an increased conservation attention. Drivers of this new decline are unclear and the influence of habitat structure and diet on breeding success may be important contributors but have received relatively little attention, particularly in the way they may interact to influence production of new fledglings. We address this knowledge gap by studying whether breeding success is influenced by habitat structure (in terms of cover of the invasive Ravenala in native habitats, an alien plant causing strong structural shift in the forests that it invades, and extent of cleared area), diet composition and food pass frequency (as a proxy for food intake) and food quality at 28 nests of a re-introduced kestrel population in south east Mauritius during the 2015–2016 breeding season. The kestrel’s diet comprised native and alien birds, reptiles, insects, and small alien mammals, with a disproportionately high proportion of Phelsuma gecko. A higher frequency of food provisioning and percentage cover of Ravenala both contributed to higher breeding success. Ravenala may increase gecko density or increase gecko detectability and predation by the kestrel, or both, while changed land use (pasture and sugar cane fields) may increase prey diversity in the form of non-forest prey known to be eaten by Kestrels (e.g. alien agamids, small mammals and birds). These prey related influences on breeding suggest that the Bambou mountain range provides a human-generated novel ecosystem altering food availability and increasing the kestrel’s breeding success. However, Ravenala is an invasive alien species harmful to the wider forest biodiversity. Progressive weeding of Ravenala and concurrent re-introduction and augmentation of native palms and Pandanus species which geckos can use at comparable densities to Ravenala, is recommended. This would likely improve the kestrel’s hunting habitat quality and maintain high gecko density or detectability and the vegetation structure required for hunting manoeuvrability and prey availability without the negative consequences of invasive Ravenala.  相似文献

Mate retention frequencies and correlations between mate changeand reproductive performance were estimated in a populationof barnacle geese, Branta leucopsis, breeding on the islandof Gotland in the Baltic. About 90% of the pairs remained togetherfrom one breeding season to the next. Only 2.4% of the pairsdivorced, most mate changes being consequences of the deathof one partner. Divorces were not forecast by low reproductivesuccess, and seemed to be accidental. In the season before matechange, there was no difference in reproductive performance,measured as clutch size, hatching date, and number of fledgedyoung, between faithful pairs and pairs where one partner wassubsequently changed. However, in the first season with a newpartner, clutch size and number of fledged young decreased onaverage. Hence, because mate change led to a reduction in reproductivesuccess, it was concluded that mate retention is advantageous.Our results suggest that this reduction is more likely due tothe lower average age or breeding experience of new partnersthan to the benefits of breeding experience with one particularpartner. The pollination biology, fruit set and breeding system of Anagallisarvensis, A. parviflora andA. monelli were studied in the fieldand glasshouse. No pollinators were observed at flowers of A.arvensis andA. parviflora , and hand pollinations indicatedthat these species are self-compatible taxa which automaticallyself-pollinate as the petals close at the end of the first day.Flowers of A. monelli were visited by several small halictidbee pollinators and a field diallel with seven plants indicatedthat this species is self-incompatible. Fruit set inA. monelliis correlated with distance to the nearest conspecific neighboursuch that beyond 2 m fruit set is relatively low. Data on the first appearance of species in the field season are widely used in phenological studies. However, there are probabilistic arguments for bias in estimates of phenological change if sampling methods or population abundances change. We examined the importance of bias in three measures of phenological change: (1) the date of the first X appearances, (2) the date of the first Y% of all first appearances and (3) the date of the first Z% of the individuals observed during the entire flight period. These measures were tested by resampling the data of the Dutch Butterfly Monitoring Scheme and by simulations using artificial data. We compared datasets differing in the number of sampling sites, population abundance and the start of the observation period. The date of the first X appearances proved to be sensitive to the number of sampling sites. Both the date of the first X appearances and the date of the first Y% of all first appearances were sensitive to population trend. No such biases were found for estimates of the first Z% of the flight period, but all three measures were sensitive to changes in the start of the observation period. The conclusions were similar for both the study on butterfly data and the simulation study. Bias in phenology assessments based on first appearance data may be considerable and should no longer be ignored in phenological research.  相似文献

Sylleptic branching of main axes was investigated in three peachtree cultivars ('Armking', 'Flavorcrest' and 'Silvergem') duringthe first year of growth. An axis was considered as made upof a series of metamers (internode, node, leaf and associatedbud) and its growth was divided into two components: the increaseof the number of metamers and the lengthening of the metamersthemselves (elongation). The relationship between branchingprobability, type of cultivar, growth components and date ofmetamer production was studied by logistic regression. Branchingprobability varied according to the cultivar, increased whenthe growth components did, and decreased if metamers appearedlate in the season. The logistic model fitted the data closelyand was validated on a data set that had not been used for estimatingthe parameters. Ninety-four percent of branched and 70% of unbranchedmetamers were correctly predicted by the logistic model. In some species, females sequentially mate with different maleswithin a single mating period, store sperm until the eggs areeventually fertilized, and gain no other resources from themales. Halliday hypothesized that, for such species, a femalecould ensure fertilization of her eggs by mating with the firstmale that she encounters; thereafter, she can maximize the qualityof her progeny by sampling further males and by mating onlywith males of higher quality than previously mated males. Thishypothesis predicts that females' choosiness will increase asthe breeding season progresses. We tested this prediction ofHalliday's hypothesis by examining mate choice by female smoothnewts (Triturus vulgaris vulgaris). Males of this species developa dorsal crest during the courtship season. Crest height variesbetween males and is potentially an indicator of male quality.Initially, female smooth newts were equally willing to matewith males with low or high crests. However, in their secondmating, females remated only with high-crested males. Theseresults support our prediction and are consistent with Halliday'shypothesis. If crest height in smooth newts is an indicatorof quality, this change in females' mate choice criterion allowsfemales both to initiate egg-laying very early in the seasonand, subsequently, to mate preferentially with higher qualitymates  相似文献

We developed a dynamic program of optimal sperm allocation for group-breeding species. Using the small-mouthed salamander,Ambystoma texanum, as a model organism, we considered how spermatophoredeposition is affected by sperm reserves, male and female numberin breeding aggregations, and time during the breeding season.Parameters for part of the model were based on field data ofbreeding-pond arrival times for both sexes and on laboratoryspermatophore deposition data. Our model included simulationsof three different seasonal patterns of female arrival rate: decreasing (as in A. texanum), increasing, and uniform. General predictions are (1) Increased male competitor numbers at breedingaggregations should cause a reduction in spermatophore allocation.(2) Increased female numbers at breeding aggregations shouldincrease spermatophore allocation. (3) The effect of currentsperm reserve levels on sperm allocation depends on the seasonaldistribution of the mean number of females per male during the breeding season: (3a) If relative female availability decreasesover time, males with low sperm reserves should limit allocationearly in the season but should deposit maximal sperm loadslate in the season; (3b) if female availability increases overtime, males with low sperm loads should limit allocation throughoutthe entire breeding season; and (3c) if female availabilityis constant, sperm reserves are predicted to have little effect on spermatophore allocation tactics. The little penguin Eudyptula minor is unique among penguin species in being able to fledge chicks from two clutches in one breeding season. Pairs laying two clutches in a given season make a higher reproductive investment, and may be rewarded by a higher reproductive success as they may raise twice as many chicks as pairs laying one clutch. The higher effort made by pairs laying two clutches could correlate negatively with survival, future reproductive performance or offspring survival, indicating a cost of reproduction. Conversely, a positive relationship between the number of clutches produced in a given breeding season and survival, future reproductive performance or offspring survival would indicate that birds laying two clutches belonged to a category of birds with higher fitness, compared to birds laying only one clutch in the season. In this study we used a long‐term data set taken from an increasing population of little penguins in Otago, SE New Zealand. We modelled the relationship between the number of clutches laid in a breeding season and survival probability, reproductive performance in the next breeding season and first year survival of offspring using capture‐recapture modelling.
Birds laying two clutches produced 1.7 times more fledglings during a breeding season than pairs laying one clutch. We found that birds laying two clutches had a higher probability of breeding in the following breeding season, a higher probability of laying two clutches in the following breeding season and a higher survival probability. There was no overall difference in post‐fledging survival between the young of birds producing one clutch and the young of birds producing two clutches. However, the survival of young of single clutch breeders declined with laying date, whereas the young of double clutch breeders had the same survival rate irrespective of laying date. For a subset of data with birds of known age, we found evidence that the probability of laying two clutches increased with age. However, there were also indications for differences among birds in the tendency to lay two clutches that could not be attributed to age. We tentatively interpret our results as evidence of quality difference among little penguin breeders.  相似文献

We document a seasonal shift in the sex ratios of broods produced by resident southeastern American kestrels (Falco sparverius paulus) breeding in nest boxes in Florida. Early in the breeding season, most biased broods were biased towards males, whereas later in the season, most biased broods were biased towards females. Computer-simulated broods subjected to sex-biased egg and/or nestling mortality demonstrate that it is possible that differential mortality produced the pattern of bias that we observed. However, these simulations do not exclude the possibility that female kestrels were manipulating the primary sex ratio of the broods. We present evidence that this sex ratio shift is adaptive: for males we detected breeding as yearlings, all had fledged early the previous season. No such relationship between season and the probability of breeding as a yearling was found for females. We propose the Early Bird Hypothesis as the ecological basis for the advantage of fledg ing early in males. We hypothesize that pre-emptive competition among post-fledging, dispersing males for breeding sites confers an advantage to males fledged early in the season. This hypothesis may explain why a non-migratory population of the Eurasian kestrel (F. tinnunculus) and non-migratory American kestrels breeding in Florida (F. s. paulus) exhibit this seasonal shift in sex ratios, whereas migratory American kestrels (F. s. sparverius) breeding in Saskatchewan, Canada, do not. We discuss the relevance of the Early Bird Hypothesis for other animal species.  相似文献

Brood size manipulations were carried out to test whether clutchsize variation in individual great tits (Parus major) controlledfor laying date was tuned to their phenotypic quality and/orlocal food abundance (individual optimization hypothesis; IOH).Broods with different original clutch sizes, but equal hatchingdates, were manipulated to a common brood size. A third broodwas kept as a control. Under the IOH, we expected a positiveassociation between reproductive success and original clutchsize. Fledgling production varied in an inconclusive way aftermanipulation, with data from 1 out of 3 years favoring the IOH.The effect of manipulation on the probability of a second clutchwas consistent with the IOH in another 1 out of the 3 years.When fitness accrued to second broods was also taken into considerationin terms of annual fledgling production, results from 2 outof 3 years tended to support the IOH. There was no effect ofthe manipulation on fitness (estimated as the number of recruitsplus parents breeding in the next season). Both the clutch component(local recruitment) and the parental component (survival tillnext breeding season) varied inconclusively with respect tothe IOH. On the basis of fitness measurements, the IOH couldnot be confirmed as an explanation for clutch size variationin this population. In 2 out of 3 years one of the three fitnesscomponents measured varied in accordance with the IOH. Overallthe evidence for the IOH in this data set is therefore weak.  相似文献

The identification of the source–sink status of a population is critical for the establishment of conservation plans and enacting smart management decisions. We developed an integrated population model to formally assess the source status of a kestrel Falco tinnunculus population breeding in nest boxes in Switzerland. We estimated juvenile and adult survival, reproduction and net dispersal (emigration/immigration) by jointly analyzing capture–recapture, dead recovery, breeding monitoring and population survey data. We also investigated the role of nest boxes on kestrel demography and assessed the contributions of vital rates to realized population growth rates. The results indicate that the kestrel population breeding in nest boxes has acted as a source over the 15 years of the study duration. A quantitative approach suggests that a substantial number of individuals have emigrated annually from this population likely affecting the population dynamics outside the management area. Variation in fecundity explained 34% of the temporal variability of the population growth rate. Moreover, a literature review suggests that kestrel pairs produce on average 1.4 chicks more per breeding attempt in nest boxes compared to natural open nests. Together, these findings suggest that fecundity was an important driver for the dynamics of this population and that nest boxes have contributed to its raise. Nest boxes are regularly used as an efficient tool for conservation management. We suggest that such a conservation action can result in the establishment of a source population being beneficial for populations both inside and outside the managed area.  相似文献

We measured the selection pressure on brood size in a recentlyestablished population of great tits (Parus major L.) in thenorthern Netherlands by manipulating brood size in three years(1995: n = 51, 1997: n = 66, 1998: n = 51), and we estimatedfitness consequences in terms of local survival of both offspringand parents. Enlarged broods had highest fitness; the offspringfitness component was positively affected by manipulation andthe parental fitness component was unaffected. Parental survivaland the probability that parents produced a second clutch werenot affected by the treatment. However, parents that had raisedenlarged broods produced their second clutch later in the season.Clutch size, brood size, and laying date of birds recapturedin the next breeding season were largely independent of thetreatment. We conclude that there is strong evidence for selectionfor larger brood size and reject the individual optimizationhypothesis for this population because the number of young inthe nest predicts fitness independently of the manipulationhistory.  相似文献

The shell morphology and population dynamics of the five BritishUnionidae are compared within a sympatric population. Pseudanodontacomplanata is distinguished from Anodonta anatina and A. cygneaby the hinge length–shell length relationship; this morphologicaldistinction may serve as a useful tool in the identificationof this threatened species. The shell length at a given annuluswas remarkably similar for all five species, although the asymptoticlength is reached most quickly in P. complanata and Unio pictorum.P. complanata is relatively short-lived and attains the lowest maximumlength, while A. cygnea lives more than twice as long and attainsalmost double the length of P. complanata. Unio spp. have ashort gravid season over the summer, while Anodonta spp. havea long gravid period, lasting from Autumn through to Spring.Unlike other members of the Anodontinae, P. complanata has ashort breeding season, overlapping with that of the Unio spp. (Received 4 March 1998; accepted 23 April 1998)  相似文献

The lesser kestrel Falco naumanni is a globally threatened species, whose breeding populations seem to have declined due to recent agricultural changes. However, nothing is known about habitat requirements during winter, despite the fact that several populations are overwintering in areas affected by agricultural transformations. We studied population size and habitat selection by wintering lesser kestrels in a Spanish pseudosteppe (Los Monegros), where traditional fallow systems for cereals are rapidly being replaced by intensive and/or irrigated crops. About 15% of the adult population wintered in the study area, as determined by systematic roadside counts compared with accurate censuses made during the breeding season. Wintering lesser kestrels preferred to forage on field margins and stubble, while avoiding abandoned fields, ploughs, scrubland, growing cereals and, mainly, the expanding irrigated crops. This work confirms the need to incorporate the habitat requirements of threatened species over their complete annual cycles; while breeding lesser kestrels scarcely use fallow (ploughed at that time), during the winter, fallow (stubble at that time) is their main foraging habitat. Both fallow land and the present agricultural calendar should be maintained to assure the conservation of wintering lesser kestrel populations.  相似文献

Capsule: We assess biometric variation in the threatened Dupont’s Lark along a wide fraction of its distribution area analysing the largest data set for this bird species available to date, comprising a 28-year period and including birds captured in Spain, Morocco and Tunisia.

Aims: To analyse Dupont’s Lark morphology evaluating five potential sources of divergence: (I) sexual dimorphism, (II) macro-regional differences, (III) climate, (IV) isolation and (V) intraspecific competition.

Methods: Multivariate analysis was used to summarize biometric data. Sexual dimorphism and macro-regional divergence were assessed by generalized linear mixed models. Climate, isolation and intraspecific competition effects on phenotype were explored by means of model averaging.

Results: Sexes differed in wing shape suggesting a sexual selection pressure on males for aerial displays. Males showed longer bills after controlling for body size. We found an increasing Spain?Conclusion: We found convincing results for wing morphology variation in relation to intrasexual competition, as males seem to be subjected to a sexual selection pressure for aerial display and this adaptation strengthens when intraspecific competition increases. We also found solid support for Allen’s rule, with results suggesting that bill size plays an important role in the bird’s thermoregulation, which does not occur in the case of tarsus. Although Bergmann’s rule is not supported in relation to minimum annual temperature, we found a relationship with thermal conditions in the breeding season, as well as water availability.  相似文献

The unique flavour of a tomato fruit is the sum of a complexinteraction among sugars, acids, and a large set of volatilecompounds. While it is generally acknowledged that the flavourof commercially produced tomatoes is inferior, the biochemicaland genetic complexity of the trait has made breeding for improvedflavour extremely difficult. The volatiles, in particular, presenta major challenge for flavour improvement, being generated froma diverse set of lipid, amino acid, and carotenoid precursors.Very few genes controlling their biosynthesis have been identified.New quantitative trait loci (QTLs) that affect the volatileemissions of red-ripe fruits are described here. A populationof introgression lines derived from a cross between the cultivatedtomato Solanum lycopersicum and its wild relative, S. habrochaites,was characterized over multiple seasons and locations. A totalof 30 QTLs affecting the emission of one or more volatiles weremapped. The data from this mapping project, combined with previouslycollected data on an IL population derived from a cross betweenS. lycopersicum and S. pennellii populations, were used to constructa correlational database. A metabolite tree derived from thesedata provides new insights into the pathways for the synthesisof several of these volatiles. One QTL is a novel locus affectingfruit carotenoid content on chromosome 2. Volatile emissionsfrom this and other lines indicate that the linear and cyclicapocarotenoid volatiles are probably derived from separate carotenoidpools. Lesser kestrel, Falco naumanni, is a colonial and migratory species breeding in part of the Mediterranean Basin and part of central Asia and north-east of China and Mongolia. This species is catalogued in IUCN red list category as vulnerable. Twenty microsatellite loci were selected from libraries enriched in AC or AG tandem repeats and specific PCR were devised from their flanking sequences. Most microsatellites (14) were found polymorphic among 30 individuals of F. naumanni representing 20 reproduction areas of the species in the region of Extremadura, Spain. Polymorphisms were detected by size variation of the amplified loci, which allele number and observed heterozygosity ranged from 3 to 20 and from 0.300 to 0.933, respectively. Cross-species amplification showed that 13 of selected loci were also found polymorphic in common kestrel species (Falco tinnunculus). Novel polymorphic microsatellites will serve to conservation studies in lesser kestrel.  相似文献

The breeding activity, sex ratio and variation in body lengthof a number of cyclopoid copepod species from the upper 450mof the Red Sea were analyzed. In most species the body lengthof adult specimens was in the lower range or less than thosereported from other pelagic regions. In the central Red Seamost species had some individuals actively breeding, duringboth autumn and winter. To the north, breeding was observedin fewer species. Only two species, Paroithona sp. and Agetuslimbatus, however, seemed to find conditions for reproductionbetter in the north than in the central area. The sex ratioswere quite consistent for all species within the families Sapphirinidaeand Corycaeidae (high percentage of males) and Oithonidae (lowpercentage of males). Within the Oncaeidae, the percentage ofmales varied from a few percent to >60% of adults. Thereappears to be a relationship between sex ratio and size. Populationsof the very small Oncaea species, O.ivlevi, O.prendeli and O.zernovi,include far fewer males than those of their larger congeners.The available information on the biology of Oncaea is summarized.Peculiarities in their life histories and reproduction are discussed.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. We develop a simple single dimension model incorporatingthe time and energy commitments of breeding altricial birdsin an effort to understand the evolutionary constraints on parentalcare. We chose time as the dimension of preference, becauseit is a naturally bounded constraint, e.g., length of day orbreeding season. The utility of the model was evaluated by comparingsimulations of time allocation of various breeding scenariosfor the European starling (Sturnus vulgaris) to field data.The structure of the model may prove useful in determining theevolutionary constraints on parental care imposed by the developmentalpattern of chicks.  相似文献
