The abundance of parasites of public health significance in pen-reared salmon and wild-caught salmon was compared. Two hundred eighty-seven salmon from Puget Sound, Washington, were examined for third-stage larvae of Anisakis simplex. Of these fish, 237 Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and chinook salmon (O. tshawytscha) were reared in commercial salmon pens and 50 sockeye salmon (O. nerka) were caught during their spawning migration. All wild-caught salmon were found to be infected with larval A. simplex; conversely, all pen-reared fishes lacked such infections. Edible musculature of wild salmon were infected with 581 (87%) nematode larvae. Of other salmon parasites known to infect humans, one Diphyllobothrium sp. plerocercoid was collected from each of three of the 50 wild-caught salmon. The study showed that farmed salmon may increase the margin of safety for consumers of raw seafood.  相似文献

Marine fishes represent the important components of the diet in the coastal areas of China and they are also natural hosts of various parasites. However, to date, little is known about the occurrence of ascaridoid parasites in the frequently consumed marine fishes in China. In order to determine the presence of ascaridoid parasites in the frequently consumed marine fishes in the coastal town Huizhou, Guangdong Province, China, 211 fish representing 45 species caught from the South China Sea (off Daya Gulf) were examined. Five species of ascaridoid nematodes at different developmental stages were detected in the marine fishes examined herein, including third-stage larva of Anisakis typica (Diesing, 1860), third and fourth-stage larvae of Hysterothylacium sp. IV-A of Shamsi, Gasser & Beveridge, 2013, adult and third-stage larvae of Hysterothylacium zhoushanense Li, Liu & Zhang, 2014, adults and third-stage larvae of Raphidascaris lophii (Wu, 1949) and adults of Raphidascaris longispicula Li, Liu & Zhang, 2012. The overall prevalence of infection is 18.0%. Of them, Hysterothylacium sp. IV-A with the highest prevalence (17.5%) and intensity (mean = 14.6) of infection was the predominant species. The prevalence and intensity of A. typica were very low (1/211 of marine fish infected with an intensity of one parasite per fish). The morphological and molecular characterization of all nematode species was provided. A cladistic analysis based on ITS sequence was constructed in order to determine the phylogenetic relationships of these ascaridoid parasites obtained herein. The present study provided important information on the occurrence and diagnosis of ascaridoid nematodes in the commercially important marine fishes from the South China Sea. The low level of infection and the species composition of ascaridoid nematodes seem to indicate the presence of low risk of human anisakidosis when local population consumed these marine fishes examined herein.  相似文献

The pelagic larval stage is a critical component of the life cycle of most coral reef fishes, but the adaptive significance of this stage remains controversial. One hypothesis is that migrating through the pelagic environment reduces the risk a larval fish has of being parasitised. Most organisms interact with parasites, often with significant, detrimental consequences for the hosts. However, little is known about the parasites that larval fish have upon settlement, and the factors that affect the levels of parasitism. At settlement, coral reef fishes vary greatly in size and age (pelagic larval duration), which may influence the degree of parasitism. We identified and quantified the parasites of pre-settlement larvae from 44 species of coral reef fishes from the Great Barrier Reef and explored their relationship with host size and age at settlement, and phylogeny. Overall, less than 50% of the larval fishes were infected with parasites, and over 99% of these were endoparasites. A Bayesian phylogenetic regression was used to analyse host-parasite (presence and intensity) associations. The analysis showed parasite presence was not significantly related to fish size, and parasite intensity was not significantly related to fish age. A phylogenetic signal was detected for both parasite presence and intensity, indicating that, overall, closely related fish species were likely to have more similar susceptibility to parasites and similar levels of parasitism when compared to more distantly related species. The low prevalence of infection with any parasite type and the striking rarity of ectoparasites is consistent with the ‘parasite avoidance hypothesis’, which proposes that the pelagic phase of coral reef fishes results in reduced levels of parasitism.

Synopsis The fishes occurring in a subtropical Australian saltmarsh were studied from January to December 1984 to determine the seasonal abundance and feeding of the most common species. Wide variations in pool water levels and salinity were recorded. Eight species of fish were collected, four of which are of economic importance to fisheries. Three taxa, Gambusia affinis, Pseudomugil signifer, and gobiids predominated in terms of abundance and occurrence. The abundance of fishes fluctuated markedly on a seasonal basis with few fish being taken in winter and spring (June–November) when pool water levels were low. Diets of the most common species were similar with terrestrial foods forming an important component of all diets. Feeding activity was highest in summer (December to February) when mosquito larvae, copepods, and larval coleopterans formed a large proportion of the fishes' diets. Results from the present study indicate that fish important to commercial fisheries rarely utilise the upper littoral saltmarsh habitat and that resident fishes are unlikely to effectively control mosquito larvae in saltmarsh.  相似文献

We present the first in situ observations of the pelagic larvae of coral-reef fishes feeding, schooling and being preyed upon. In addition, we report on their behavioural interactions with adult and juvenile fishes. Observations on over 500 larvae of over 50 species (mostly from four families) near the end of their pelagic interval were made in both open water (> 1 km offshore) and near-reef environments. Nearly 10% of larvae were seen to feed in open water, but < 1% fed near the reef. Presettlement schooling was observed in five species of four families. We observed no predation upon larvae in open water except near the bottom. Near the reef, 8.5% of larvae were eaten. The main predators near and on the reef were a species of wrasse and lizardfishes. Rates of predation seem to differ among genera of pomacentrids, perhaps related to differences in behaviour when settling. When confronted with adult fishes, which happened largely near the reef, larvae reacted with a limited range of behaviours, including sheltering near the observer, swimming to the surface, slowing or stopping, or swimming offshore. The frequency of these behaviours differed among larvae of three pomacentrid genera. Interactions with reef residents, particularly pomacentrids, were common, and usually involved aggression by the resident toward settling larvae. This may act to discourage settlement during the day when such residents are active. These data show that behaviour of late larvae of coral-reef fishes is complex and can greatly influence survival and recruitment. Further, behaviour differs among taxa, showing that not only are larvae not passive, but also that a generalised behaviour of larvae does not exist.  相似文献

From February 1987 to February 1989, the populational biology of Contraceacum sp. (larvae) in its paratenic host, the fish Serrasalmus spilopleura Kner, 1860, was studied in two ponds in a subtropical permanent habitat northeastern of Argentina. Fishes from Ramada Paso pond presented 80% of prevalence and 1 to 132 larvae per fish while fishes from Aeroclub pond presented 63% of prevalence and 1 to 184 larvae per fish. Fishes collected from Aeroclub pond have shown a high prevalence of infection during the first period of study (1987), diminishing the following year. In fishes from Ramada Paso pond the prevalence varied not significatively during the two years. Prevalence and mean intensity of infection increase with body length and weight of the hosts. Sex of hosts is not an influential factor in parasitic level. The lenitic "closed" environmental (Ramada Paso pond) evidenced the greatest larvae mean intensity and prevalence. Although, the lenitic "open" environmental (Aeroclub pond) showed the greatest parasitic number of individuals in an infrapopulation. The spatial dispersion in both ponds were aggregated and fit well a negative binomial model. Nevertheless, the Aeroclub pond presented the greatest overdispersion.  相似文献

Three hundred and thirty-seven specimens of the zoarcid fish, Melanostigma pammelas, collected between December, 1950 and December, 1969 from bathypelagic waters off southern California, were examined for their parasites. Incidences of infection were: digentic Trematoda 61%, Myxosporida 39%, larval Nematoda 9%. Two adult trematodes are described: Fellodistomum melanostigmum nov. sp. from the intestine, and Aponurus pacificus nov. sp. from the stomach. This parasite record is markedly unlike the typical record reported for eastern Pacific mesopelagic fishes in which many larval nematodes and few, if any, adult trematodes were found. Our long-term objective is to explain parasite pattern differences in the deep ocean in terms of their biological and physical environments. A total of 668 specimens representing 18 species of meso- and bathypelagic fishes collected from the western North Atlantic were examined for parasites. Seventeen species and 39.1% of the specimens harboured at least one type of parasite. The highest number of parasite taxa recovered from a single fish species was seven. Host species had overall infection prevalences ranging from 10.0 to 88.9% of the specimens examined. Cestodes were most common (22.8% of all specimens examined), followed by fungi (6.6%), nematodes (6.1%) and digenetic trematodes (4.9%). Mesopelagic fishes showed a greater prevalence of infection (49.1%) than bathypelagic fishes (28.9%). Most parasites recovered were immature; however, based on the presence of adult and postlarval stage parasites, definitive and second intermediate host status is suggested for at least three fish species (Nemichthys scolopaceus, Nessorhamphus ingolfianus and Eurypharynx pelecanoides ). The presence of the cestode Nybelinia and Anisakis-lype nematodes among a number of host species may have been due to predation on the euphausiid Nematoscelis , which was found in the stomachs of all host species infected by these two parasite taxa. Higher overall infection prevalences among host species were found than have been previously reported for mid-water fishes and it is possible that this may be a function of near-bottom presence of the fishes over the continental slope. It is suggested that the low prevalence of parasites within meso- and bathypelagic fishes when compared to benthic and shallow-water species reflects the lower overall energy of, and reduced probability of host-to-host transfer in, the deep-sea pelagic ecosystem.  相似文献

Summary We discovered two kinds of parasites, i.e., a strepsipteran, possibly Xenos myrapetrus (Trois) and an undescribed gregarine in the Neotropical swarm-founding paper wasp, Polybia paulista (Ihering). Although proportions of workers that were infected by these parasites varied greatly among colonies analyzed, prevalence of infected workers was recognized. Five external characters were measured and compared among uninfected workers, stylopized (i.e., infected by Strepsiptera) workers and workers that were infected by gregarines. Uninfected workers were significantly larger than stylopized workers, while smaller than workers that were infected by gregarines. Nutrients of stylopized workers may be plundered during their growth period, and consequently their body size may be reduced. However, the gregarines may manipulate host larvae to solicit more food from adults or increase development time of larvae longer, and therefore produce more parasites from a larger host.Received 1 July 2003; revised 1 December 2003; accepted 4 December 2003.  相似文献

The behaviour of the carrot-fly population in the soil during autumn and winter has been investigated in East Anglia over the three seasons 1943-5. The results show that the pest overwinters in both the larval and pupal conditions, and that the proportion of the individuals in each stage varies from crop to crop and from season to season. Samples taken from a May (1943) sown plot showed that pupation, which was 452% complete in October, rose to 742% in March and was not complete until late April. From a June (1944) sown plot of carrots samples showed a rise in percentage pupation from 8-6% in October to 935% in March, the process probably being complete by early April. The changes in proportion of the soil larvae, carrot larvae and puparia in both the May and June plots were followed and are shown graphically. The changes in the size groups of the soil larvae and in the carrot larvae were also traced. The immature larvae persist longer in the carrots than in the soil. The size composition of the larvae from the soil of the June (1944) plot was recorded over the period September to April and the results are given graphically. Samples taken in October 1945 contained highly organized puparia from which flies emerged in a few days. These flies (third generation) gave rise to progeny which overwintered in the larval condition. The population in December 1945, composed chiefly of second generation puparia and third generation larvae, was very similar to that occuring in the previous two years. Mortality in the overwintering carrot-fly larvae and puparia varied considerably but was frequently heavy. The principal agencies concerned were an hymenopterous insect, Dacnusa gracilis Nees., and fungus and bacterial diseases. Other insect parasites occasionally important were Loxotropa tritoma Thorns, and Aleochara sparsa Heer. Nematode parasites were also recorded.  相似文献

Fluctuations of the population abundance of the rose bitterling,Rhodeus ocellatus (Kner) in a small pond, Shimizu-ike (700 m2), Osaka Prefecture, Japan, were estimated by the Petersen method from 1973 to 1977. The number of fish fluctuated between 12,600 and 46,700 during that period. In 1974, a large reproductive peak in May contributed mainly by 2- and 3-year-old spawners and a small peak in late July contributed by 1–2-year-old fish were observed. Average number of eggs laid in a bivalve,Anodonta woodiana Lea, in each month was estimated with field experiments from March to November, 1974. In total, 93,400 eggs were laid during the first reproductive peak, and 13,100 eggs during the second reproductive peak. The mortality of eggs and larvae incubated in the bivalve was less than 30%, and approximately 70 % of the larvae that had swum out from the host died in the following six months. Thus, it is estimated that approximately 20% of the eggs laid in the bivalves can survive and grow up to reach the first maturity. The high survival rate ofR. ocellatus among cyprinid fishes might be due to the fact that the eggs and larvae are protected from predation by being embedded in a bivalve, and to the fact that the larvae at the earliest free swimming stage have a good opportunity of surviving because they are much larger in size and more developed morphologically than those of other cyprinid fishes.  相似文献

Parasitic disease in fishes is one of the most important factors limiting aquaculture production and its economic viability. Cymothoa indica, a cymothoid isopod, is reported here for the first time parasitizing cultured larvae of the Asian seabass Lates calcarifer in India. Fourteen-day-old L. calcarifer larvae of mean weight 8.73 +/- 0.03 mg were fed with wild zooplankton in the laboratory. On Day 14 of rearing, larvae were found parasitized by cymothoids. Infected larvae reached a mean (+/- SE) weight of 98.86 +/- 0.30 mg, while uninfected specimens weighed 117 +/- 0.43 mg at the end of the experiment (Day 21). C. indica occurred in the branchial and anterodorsal regions of infected fish, where resultant skin lesions were red, hemorrhagic, without scales and with abundant secreted mucus. The cumulative mortality over the 3 wk period was 16.54 %. These parasites are transferred to the host via the zooplankton used as food; this could easily be overcome, either by filtering wild zooplankton to remove the infectious swimming larvae of C. indica or by using cultured copepods.  相似文献

Interannual ichthyoplankton variation, was analyzed in Bahía de la Ascensión, Mexico, during December of four consecutive years (1994-1997). A total of 32 families, 35 genera and 21 species of fish larvae were identified. The most abundant fish larvae were the Gobiidae followed by the Callionymidae, Clupeidae and Tetraodontidae. Larval diversity was low when compared with other periods ("dry" and "rainy"). Three spatial associations (internal, medium and external) were found in December 1994 and 1995. In 1996-1997, stations of the inner and outer parts of the bay were mixed. The dominant families characterized most of the faunal associations. Egg density was highest in the external zone of the bay, whereas larvae were most abundant in the inner area. Major factors affecting the fish larval assemblages during December (1994-1997) in Bahía de la Ascensión seem to be related to the nursery areas location and to the tropical fishes reproductive period.  相似文献

Twenty-three species of metazoan parasites were recorded from adult spot and 26 from adult croaker. Of the 33 parasitic species found, 17 occurred in both spot and croaker. No significant differences in intensity of parasites occurred between sexes of either spot or croaker. All of the parasites had over-dispersed, or clumped, distributions among hosts. Adult spot and croaker collected offshore had much greater species-richness, diversity, and total number of individual parasites than juvenile fishes collected in adjoining estuaries during another study. The juvenile spot and croaker had less time to acquire parasites and inhabited less diverse and more confined habitats in inshore estuaries, which resulted in less diverse parasite communities than offshore fishes. The number of species and diversity of parasites in adult fish was greater in croaker than spot. However, when only gastrointestinal helminths were considered, spot had greater species-richness as well as greater numbers of individual helminths, suggesting that they had a more diverse diet and that they fed on more infected intermediate hosts than croaker. In both adult spot and croaker the mean number of parasitic species was greater than those of freshwater fishes and fewer than those for birds and mammals. The total number of individual parasites was similar to that of freshwater fishes. The opportunistic diet and the migratory habits of both spot and croaker contribute to their diverse parasite faunas. Comparison of adult spot and croaker parasite faunas collected offshore indicated that their respective parasite component communities were distinct and that similar parasite infracommunity variability existed in both hosts and that their communities were not ‘random’ samples, but restricted subsets of the compound community. Although the parasite dominance hierarchy in adults of both species varied slightly between areas and seasons sampled, there appeared to be a predictable dominant species that was accompanied by subordinate, less predictable species. However, the variability in both relative intensities and presence-absence of parasites within communities resulting from their diverse diets make them less predictable than those of other vertebrates with less diverse diets such as the lesser scaup duck and more like those of other marine fishes.  相似文献

Larval and juvenile fishes were collected at low tide from the surface of an intertidal salt marsh on Sapelo Island, Georgia every 6 days from 25 May through 20 December 1982. Larval fishes were present in shallow puddles of tidal water on the marsh from the beginning of the sampling period until the end of October. Juveniles were present throughout the year. Fundulus heteroclitus (Linnaeus) and F. luciae (Baird) accounted for 96.3% (67.0% and 29.3%, respectively) of the 4355 fishes collected. These fishes exhibited synchronous, temporal pulses in larval abundance, suggesting that reproduction was discontinuous and controlled by the same factor(s) in both species. Larval F. heteroclitus inhabited aquatic micro-habitats near the upland edge of the intertidal marsh, but as the larvae grew to juvenile size (≈ 10 mm standard length) they moved to lower elevations near a tidal creek. Large juveniles and adults of F. heteroclitus infrequently occurred in the samples, presumably because they leave the intertidal marsh as the tide ebbs. F. luciae were rarely found in low marsh areas, but all age classes (including adults) occurred at higher elevations, supporting previous suggestions that this species prefers high marsh habitats. The vegetated, intertidal salt marsh appears to be the principal nursery habitat for both of these cyprinodontid species.  相似文献

The Motile Aeromonas Septicemia (MAS) is an important disease of cultured catfishes (Heteropneustes fossilis, Clarias batrachus and Pangasius pangasius), caused by different species of Aeromonas bacteria which have been documented to be higher death rates (≤70%) in Bangladesh since 2016. Present study was conducted to develop bi-valent vaccine using A. hydrophila and A. veronii, and to validate their efficacy via intra-muscular (IM) and oral-routes of immunization in selected species of fishes. Brood fishes of the three species were immunized with three doses of inactivated vaccine (107 CFU /2.3 mg/ml). Hematological parameters of brood fishes and antibody levels (IgM) of broods, their larvae and eggs were determined by ELISA. Additionally, Relative Percent Survivability (RPS) and the IgM levels of the larvae after challenge with virulent A. hydrophila and A. veronii were also evaluated. Findings of this study showed that the lymphocytes, monocytes, granulocytes counts and antibody (IgM) titre of brood fishes, larvae and eggs from the vaccinated fishes were found significantly higher (p< 0.05) compared to the un-vaccinated control groups. Alternatively, antibody levels (IgM) in the larvae of vaccinated group of brood fishes fed with antigen coated feed was exhibited to be remarkably higher (p< 0.05) than the antigen non-fed group. The RPS of larvae of Shing (91.24 ± 2.00%), Magur (88.09 ± 2.88%) and Pangas (93.17 ± 1.52%) was found to be higher in the larvae at 20-day age of vaccinated group compared to non-vaccinated brood fishes group. Findings of this study indicated that the active immunization of brood fishes followed by oral immunization of their larvae feeding with antigen coated feed showed synergistic effect in protecting cultured Shing, Magur and Pangas fishes from frequent attack with Aeromonas spp at any age of their lifetime.  相似文献

A widely recognized pathway for uptake and accumulation of organic contaminants by demersal fishes is through consumption of infaunal organisms (i.e., those having direct contact with contaminated sediments). Recent studies indicate that demersal fishes near a large sewage outfall in southern California consume larvae of a terrestrial fly, Clogmia albipunctata, which are entrained with the treated effluent and discharged to the ocean. Fly larvae consumption represents a possible method for accumulation of organic contaminants that is unique to marine fishes with non-selective feeding habits that occur near the ocean outfall. An estimated 37–138kg (wet weight) of fly larvae are discharged daily during summer to the ocean via the Orange County Sanitation Districts (OCSD) wastewater outfall; winter discharges are expected to be lower due to lower production and temperature limitations of the fly life cycle. Fly larvae were present in the guts of ten demersal and pelagic fish species collected near the outfall between July 1993 and August 1998. The highest frequencies of fly larvae (up to 100%) occurred in the guts of white croaker, Genyonemus lineatus, and chub mackerel, Scomber japonicus. Because infauna are still abundant and diverse near the outfall, fly larvae consumption appears to represent a feeding preference instead of a response to lower prey abundances. Fly larvae tissues collected at the wastewater treatment plant contained sub-part-per-million levels of organochlorine compounds, including PCB and DDT. However, lipid-normalized organochlorine concentrations in fly larvae tissues were not appreciably higher than levels in infauna or zooplankton tissues. Although the study design provided only limited sample sizes for some sample types, this initial study suggests that fish consumption of fly larvae represents a mechanism for direct transfer of contaminants and may contribute to uptake and accumulation of lypophyllic organochlorines in fish near the outfall.  相似文献

Counter to expectations of coevolved parasite-host relationships, parasites frequently infect hosts that never contribute to their reproduction, making the identification of a parasite's true host-specificity problematic. Pseudodelphis oligocotti (Nematoda: Dracunculoidea) infects several coastal Pacific fishes, but its course of development appears highly variable, suggesting that incidence does not reflect effective host range. To determine the host range of P. oligocotti and describe its relationship to various potential hosts, 24 fish species were examined from several British Columbia localities for prevalence, intensity, and extent and tissue location of parasite development. Pseudodelphis oligocotti infects 9 species of fishes from 5 orders, of which penpoint gunnel, Apodichthys flavidus, showed the highest prevalence and intensity, up to 80% and 19 (+/- 17.1 SD) worms per host, respectively. Although subadult and adult P. oligocotti occurred in all 9 fishes, larvigerous P. oligocotti only occurred in A. flavidus and rarely in the northern clingfish, Gobiesox maeandricus. Infective first-stage larvae were recovered from gill tissue of A. flavidus. Thus, at most only 2 of the 9 host species infected by P. oligocotti actually contribute to its transmission. The occurrence of P. oligocotti in diverse hosts may be accounted for by the parasite's indiscriminant mode of transmission via ingestion of free-living intermediate copepod hosts, where highly exposed or more suitable fishes (or both) are closely related by diet and microhabitat. This study demonstrates how parasite transmission and host ecology can greatly affect observed host range and ultimately its potential for expansion.  相似文献

研究了斜纹夜蛾幼虫体内的斜纹夜蛾侧沟茧蜂存活率、发育历期、寄主感染病毒时间、病毒浓度之间的关系,并测定了斜纹夜蛾侧沟茧蜂的传毒效率.结果表明,病毒对寄主体内寄生蜂历期无明显影响,寄生在幼虫体内的寄生蜂能在寄主病死前完成发育,存活比例因寄主感染病毒的时间和浓度而异.斜纹夜蛾被寄生后接种病毒(SINPV),距离寄生时间越长,饲毒浓度越低,寄生蜂完成发育的比例越大,但饲毒时间是主要影响因素.从感病幼虫体内发育成的侧沟茧蜂或曾经在感病寄主上产过卵的寄生蜂,以及通过人工方式使产卵器被病毒污染的寄生蜂,均能携带一定数量的病毒.通过产卵活动,侧沟茧蜂成蜂能在寄主幼虫个体间传递病毒.当寄生蜂在感病的寄主幼虫上产卵带毒后,平均可传递病毒给2.14头幼虫;发育于感病幼虫体内的寄生蜂,平均可传递病毒给2.45头幼虫.通过用病毒液浸茧或用混有病毒的蜂蜜饲喂成蜂等方式使产卵器污染病毒的寄生蜂,传毒效率随饲毒浓度增加而提高,平均可传递病毒1.45头和0.94头幼虫  相似文献

The role of ecological and phylogenetic processes is fundamental to understanding how parasite communities are structured. However, for coral reef fishes, such information is almost nonexistent. In this study, we analyzed the structure of the parasite communities based on composition, richness, abundance, and biovolume of ecto- and endoparasites of 14 wrasse species (Labridae) from Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia. We determine whether the structure of the parasite communities from these fishes was related to ecological characteristics (body size, abundance, swimming ability, and diet) and/or the phylogenetic relatedness of the hosts. We examined 264 fishes from which almost 37,000 individual parasites and 98 parasite categories (types and species) were recorded. Gnathiid and cestode larvae were the most prevalent and abundant parasites in most fishes. Mean richness, abundance, and biovolume of ectoparasites per fish species were positively correlated with host body size only after controlling for the host phylogeny, whereas no such correlation was found for endoparasites with any host variable. Because most ectoparasites have direct transmission, one possible explanation for this pattern is that increased space (host body size) may increase the colonization and recruitment of ectoparasites. However, endoparasites generally have indirect transmission that can be affected by many other variables, such as number of prey infected and rate of parasite transmission.  相似文献
