Evolutionary biology is distinctively forward looking or 'teleological' in its way of thought. In this, it distinguishes itself from the physical sciences. One can ask for the purpose or function of the stegoseaur's fins. One would never ask for the function of a planet. Many, including biologists, worry that such teleology is an unhappy legacy of a Christian past. Although teleology does have its roots in pre-evolutionary thought, there are good reasons why it has persisted, and there are equally good reasons why it should be cherished.  相似文献

The definition of homology and its application to reproductive structures, external genitalia, and the physiology of sexual pleasure has a tortuous history. While nowadays there is a consensus on the developmental homology of genital and reproductive systems, there is no agreement on the physiological translation, or the evolutionary origination and roles, of these structural correspondences and their divergent histories. This paper analyzes the impact of evolutionary perspectives on the homology concept as applied to the female orgasm, and their consequences for the biological and social understanding of female sexuality and reproduction. After a survey of the history of pre-evolutionary biomedical views on sexual difference and sexual pleasure, we examine how the concept of sexual homology was shaped in the new phylogenetic framework of the late 19th century. We then analyse the debates on the anatomical locus of female pleasure at the crossroads of theories of sexual evolution and new scientific discourses in psychoanalysis and sex studies. Moving back to evolutionary biology, we explore the consequences of neglecting homology in adaptive explanations of the female orgasm. The last two sections investigate the role played by different articulations of the homology concept in evolutionary developmental explanations of the origin and evolution of the female orgasm. These include the role of sexual, developmental homology in the byproduct hypothesis, and a more recent hypothesis where a phylogenetic, physiological concept of homology is used to account for the origination of the female orgasm. We conclude with a brief discussion on the social implications for the understanding of female pleasure derived from these different homology frameworks.  相似文献

中尺度区域生态安全的研究针对区域的实际生态安全问题展开,处于各尺度生态安全概念的核心地位.作为特殊的区域,以生态基础设施建设为核心的城市区域生态安全格局的构建成为城市可持续发展的基础内容.基于土地利用分析的定性、定量相结合的景观格局研究,生态价值评估以及社会经济驱动分析为城市区域生态安全格局的构建提供了一种可能.兰州市区域生态安全格局由生态保障体系、生态缓冲体系以及生态过滤体系所构成,经过分析,认为生态缓冲体系的建设成为兰州市区域生态安全格局构建的关键.城市未来扩展格局的定量分析成为兰州市区域生态安全格局安全级别的判别函数,根据不同的响应,把区域生态安全格局化分为低级、中级和高级3个级别.  相似文献

The discrimination of pattern disruption in freely flying honeybees (Apis mellifera) was examined. Bees were trained to discriminate at a fixed distance between a regularly repeated black/white pattern and the same pattern at a different magnification in targets of the same angular size. The locations of areas of black were regularly shuffled to make them useless as cues. The results of the experiments indicate that the bees discriminate the disruption of the pattern as a whole, irrespective of the actual pattern. Bees trained to prefer a larger period transfer to an even larger period, when given a forced choice with a pair of patterns of differing disruption from those they were trained on, as if their spontaneous preference has not been overcome. Bees trained to prefer a smaller period, however, prefer the former negative pattern rather than transfer to an even smaller period. These results show that the bees do not rely solely on learning the absolute period of a pattern nor the relative disruption of two patterns, and they are confused when these two cues conflict in tests with unfamiliar targets. Bees can discriminate between fields of view that differ in average disruption as a generalized cue, irrespective of pattern. Accepted: 7 April 1997  相似文献

基于理论分析与实证研究的结合,探讨了农业景观中潜在景观格局的概念、潜在格局分析单元等理论问题;并以新疆石河子垦区的150团场为例,用景观多样性、均匀度、嵌块体伸长度、聚集度、形状破碎化、分维数等量化指数,对其潜在格局进行了分析,与以1982和1995两个年度的土地利用现状为分类基础的现实格局进行了比较。结果表明,从潜在格局到现状格局均呈现出有规律的变化。因此,用土壤类型的不同分类单元完全可以作为现  相似文献

When considering a behavioral pattern as a specific type of mechanism, an inherent problem is that it is difficult to determine to what extent the mechanism is programmed to behave selectively in individual situations. To probe this question further, we investigated the orientation of the body axis of the young Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. The pattern of the substrate and the orientation of neighboring fish were recognized as the determining factors for orientation in P. olivaceus. It was expected, therefore, that a group of individuals would exhibit a definite orientation pattern with respect to the striped pattern. However, the global orientation patterns on the striped substrate based on ten individuals could be classified into two categories: perpendicular and cross to the stripe pattern. This suggests that the substrate pattern and the surrounding individuals operated as distinct temporal criteria as stimuli for orientation. Analysis based on the local and global viewpoints reveals the temporality quantitatively.  相似文献

The recovery of several specimens allows to have a good knowledge of australopithecine pelvic bone anatomy. But despite this, differences of opinion still exist regarding locomotory interpretations. The aim of this paper is to present results of a new morphometric analysis of australopithecine pelvic bones to try to understand the reasons of this situation. It appears that australopithecines exhibit the same overall architectural pattern as extant humans, the hominid pattern, just as all African apes also exhibit the same pongid pattern. But, in this pattern, it is possible to clearly depict two subpatterns corresponding to both generaAustralopithecus andHomo. Locomotory interpretations depend on the fact that some studies emphasize traits related to the hominid pattern (concluding then on modern bipedalism) and others focus on trains characterizing australopithecine sub-pattern (concluding then on non-modern bipedalism).  相似文献

Abstract. The interpretation of Hill's ‘Two Term Local Quadrat Variance’ analysis to detect the scale of spatial pattern in vegetation is improved by an equation that relates the block size of a variance peak to the scale of the pattern that gave rise to it. (Contrary to previous belief, the two are not the same, especially for large block sizes.) Deviations of pattern from a perfectly regular alternation of equally sized gaps and patches of uniform density cause changes in the variance. To aid in the interpretation of these changes, two indices of pattern regularity are proposed, one based on density and one based onpresence/absence, in orderte distinguish the effects of irregularities of patch density from irregularities of patch size and position. These methods are applied to a study of primary succession on glacial moraines near Mt. Robson, British Columbia, Canada, in order to evaluate certain hypotheses about the development of pattern. Other researchers have proposed that during succession, the pattern at first intensifies at the scales initially observed, then as succession proceeds some scales of pattern are lost due to coalescence of patches and eventually the intensity of those that remain decreases as the patterns become more and more irregular. The vegetation on the Mt. Robson moraines confirms this sequence of changes in vegetation pattern, only to the extent that patterns intensify initially in the chronosequence; the number of scales of pattern in the vegetation remains about the same throughout and there is no evidence that the patterns become more irregular. The variance-block size graphs derived from presence / absence data matched those from density data well, indicating that the simpler data, in this case, are almost as informative about pattern as the more detailed data.  相似文献

定量分析城市景观的空间格局,深入研究景观格局的形成机制,将有助于理解城市景观的格局与过程,分析城市化的社会、经济和生态学后果以及制定更有效的景观管理策略。研究以城市景观生态学途径,应用基于GIS的景观格局分析与人工神经网络(ANN)相结合的方法定量分析上海市城市景观格局(1994年)及其变化规律,建立了能够较好地模拟上海市景观格局对居住区用地、道路密度、人口密度、城市发展历史与黄浦江等自然、社会、经济因素响应的人工神经网络。结果表明,人工神经网络方法适于研究城市化驱动因素与城市景观格局的非线性对应关系,为景观格局形成机制和景观空间结构与生态学过程相互关系的深入研究提供了一条有效、实用的研究途径。  相似文献

A convoluted surface pattern of fine ridges, pits, and grooves characterized the brow ridges of Australopithecines and other very ancient fossil hominids. This vermiculate configuration terminated rather abruptly just below the fronto-zygomatic suture in Australopithecines. It was resistant to oriented cracking from weathering or fractures, contrasting with the smooth but structurally oriented zygomatic bone adjacent to it. The pattern apparently developed as individuals matured. The vermiculate pattern seems to have been a feature of brow surface in hominids through much of their identifiable history, despite substantial changes in shape and size of the supraorbital region during human evolution. Limitations on the area of vermiculate surface in Australopithecines suggest that the pattern was associated in some yet undetermined manner with overlying soft tissues. This gives evidence on the cause and functional significance of the vermiculate pattern in Neandertal and modern crania. Problems of describing surfaces as “vermiculate” are raised by observation of elaborations of surface relief on two individuals.  相似文献

To characterize the urbanization pattern quantitatively,a study on the mechanisms of the landscape pattern formation could facilitate the understanding on urban landscape patterns and processes,the ecological and socioeconomic consequences of urbanization,as well as the establishment of more effective strategies for landscape management.In this study,we integrated a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based analysis on landscape pattern with an artificial neural network (ANN) to quantitatively characterize the urbanization pattern of the metropolitan area of Shanghai,China,and to establish an ANN model that could preferably simulate the responses of urban landscape pattern to the natural and socioeconomic factors such as residence area,road density,population density,urban development history and the Huangpu River as an element of economic change.Our results showed that the ANN model seems appropriate for studying the nonlinear relationship among the forcing factors of urbanization and the urban landscape patterns,which provided an effective and practical approach for further understanding the mechanisms of the landscape formation pattern and the reciprocal relationship between landscape spatial pattern and ecological process.  相似文献

Some interesting properties on pattern separation have been shown through researches by neural models of cerebellar cortex. It seems to us that those results are a part of the properties of pattern separation. A two layer random nerve net with inhibitory connections is given as a model of the cerebellar cortex. The model is composed of threshold elements there. A more general theory of pattern separation than those studied earlier is given, and the pattern separability of the model is considered. It is revealed that the standard deviation of threshold values of threshold elements has a great effect on the pattern separability and the control of the firing rate. The present study is also intended to investigate the pattern separability in such a case that the firing rate of input patterns are not equal, and a pattern includes the other pattern. It is assumed there that the standard deviation is small. Some properties of the degree of pattern separation are cleaned up.  相似文献

Bilateral palmar prints of 604 male individuals from 12 Iranian groups, six Mongoloid and six Caucasoid, have been analyzed for palmar pattern ridge counts (PPRC). Highly significant variation has been observed in the size of the palmar patterns in all the configurational areas among the Iranian groups. The distance analysis based on PPRCs differentiated the Iranian Mongoloid from the Iranian Caucasoid groups into distinct clusters. The pattern of differentiation based on PPRCs explained the ethnohistoric relationships between the Iranian groups as well as between the Iranian and the 20 Caucasoid groups from India much better than the palmar pattern frequencies. The results of this study demonstrate the existence of variation in the size of the palmar patterns across different populations within an ethnic group, as well as that among different ethnic groups, and seems to be a better indicator of interpopulational diversity than the palmar pattern frequencies.  相似文献

Fifteen thousand consecutive electrocardiograms on R.C.A.F. aircrew applicants aged 18 to 24 were studied from the standpoint of incidence, clinical findings and follow-up of the WPW pattern discovered because the ECG was taken as part of the selection procedure. Forty-six cases were discovered (0.3%). All were reviewed and passed as clinically fit except for one with asymptomatic rheumatic heart disease. Two others gave a history suggestive of paroxysmal rapid heart action. None of the 43 men on follow-up have developed evidence of arrhythmia. Thirteen of the 46 showed an intermittent pattern initially or on subsequent follow-up. Fifty to 80% of people with the WPW pattern experience tachycardia, according to the literature. The incidence of tachycardia in this study was much lower (2 in 46 or 4.3%). The WPW pattern is not synonymous with the WPW syndrome, and iatrogenic heart disease must be avoided in fit young men in whom the WPW pattern is discovered because of routine electrocardiography.  相似文献

针对拟平鳅(Liniparhomaloptera disparis)的两个亚种(L.disparis disparis和L.disparis qiongzhongensis)现有形态分类特征的含糊,通过观察标本室保存的15条水系441尾标本,首次提出利用下唇结构类型作为拟平鳅亚种的补充形态鉴别依据,结合头背部斑纹特征,能有效地鉴别拟平鳅各地理种群和亚种,为拟平鳅的分类和鉴定提供参考依据。依据头背部斑纹差异归纳出4种类型,分别为小斑块型(云开山脉以东的7条水系及海南岛万泉河),虫蚀纹型(云开山脉以西的5条水系),混合斑纹型(海南岛的万泉河、南渡江、昌化江共3条水系),大斑块型(海南岛的昌化江)。依据下唇结构变化情况总结出3种下唇类型,分别是半圆型(云开山脉以西的5条水系),几字型(云开山脉以东的7条水系),马蹄型(海南岛的3条水系)。依据头背部斑纹特征结合下唇结构特征,对照模式标本的描述,重新定义了拟平鳅原有的两个亚种,将分布于云开山脉以东水系的种群鉴定为指名亚种,拟平鳅L.disparis disparis,其鉴别特征为:头背部斑纹为小斑块型并且下唇类型为几字型;将海南岛种群鉴定为琼中拟平鳅L.disparis qiongzhongensis,它们都具有独特的马蹄型下唇类结构,且头背部斑纹以混合斑纹型为主。重要的发现是,分布于云开山脉以西的种群与已命名的2个亚种在形态上有明显的差异,其头背部斑纹为独特的虫蚀纹型且下唇类型为半圆型。这可能是一个新亚种。分子生物学方法也许能证明云开山脉以西的种群在遗传上的独特性以及形成新亚种的可能性。云开山脉东、西两侧以及海南岛不同水系的拟平鳅的种群分化问题值得进一步探究。  相似文献

In this paper we propose a model of visual perception in which a positive feedback mechanism can reproduce the pattern stimulus on a neurons screen. The pattern stimulus reproduction is based on informations coming from the spatial derivatives of visual pattern. This information together with the response of the feature extractors provides to the reproduction of the visual pattern as neuron screen electric activity. We simulate several input patterns and prove that the model reproduces the percept.  相似文献

The insect wing is formed from an epithelial sheet that folds during development to establish a saclike tissue with an upper and a lower epithelial monolayer. The adult cuticle formed by the upper and lower monolayers has a distinctive pattern of thickened regions called veins. The venation pattern on the lower surface matches that on the upper surface. As demonstrated by transposition of grafts from the upper monolayer, determination of venation pattern occurs prior to pupation in both wing monolayers. However, the pattern is not expressed until later in adult development. Expression of this determined pattern occurs autonomously in most circumstances. One circumstance in which the pattern fails to be expressed is in pieces of the upper monolayer that are isolated from the lower monolayer before adult cuticle deposition and expression of venation pattern. The only evident interaction between the two monolayers of the wing occurs during a 3-day period, 6–8 days after pupation. During this time, the basal laminae segregating upper monolayer from lower monolayer disappear, and the basal ends of cells form desmosomal junctions at the interface between upper and lower monolayer. Transposition as well as isolation of tissue fragments from the upper monolayer suggest that this interaction between the basal surfaces of the two monolayers is a prerequisite for evocation of venation pattern.  相似文献

通过边界数量的长度谱分布分析。探讨了边界数量-长度特征与景观和组分碎裂化程度之间的相互关系;基于边界的数量和累积长度计算了景观多样性,均匀度、异质性和空间复杂性,并与基于斑快面积比重的传统格局指数计算结果进行了对比分析。研究表明,研究区内的快速城市化过程导致组分界面特征复杂化,空间分布的圈层结构简化;边界总体的数量谱分布方程系数α对于景观整体碎裂化程度有良好的指示意义,基于边界特征的景观格局指数对于传统的格局分析方法可以形成有益的补充。  相似文献

植被恢复与建设是控制水土流失的重要措施.在干旱半干旱地区,植被在空间上的分布呈现离散特征,在坡面上形成的裸地-植被镶嵌和植被条带分布等覆被格局对水土流失过程具有重要影响.覆被格局与水土流失关系研究是景观生态学格局与过程研究的重要内容.从植被斑块、坡面覆被格局对水土流失的影响与耦合覆被格局与水土流失的手段和方法三个方面对国内外相关研究进行总结分析.从中发现,植被类型、层次结构和形态特征是植被斑块尺度上影响径流泥沙的关键因素;不同覆被类型的产流产沙特征与覆被格局的准确描述是研究覆被格局水土流失效应的重要基础;坡面覆被格局对水土流失的影响关键在于其改变了径流泥沙运移和汇集的连续性,应重点关注径流泥沙源汇区的连通性和空间分布在水土流失中的作用;以坡面的精确覆被制图为基础,建立基于水土流失过程的覆被格局指数和耦合格局信息的径流与侵蚀模型是定量研究覆被格局影响的有效手段.今后应加强以下研究:以动态系统的观点研究覆被格局的变化对水土流失的影响,系统理解覆被格局与水土流失之间的相互联系与反馈机制,探讨两者间动态关系随尺度变化的规律性并发展尺度上推方法;构建过程意义明确且简单实用的格局指数,将覆被格局与水土流失过程有机联系起来;发展覆被格局的动态信息与产流产沙过程相结合的水文模型,加强对格局与径流泥沙反馈系统的耦合,建立真正意义上的覆被格局-水土流失过程耦合模型.  相似文献
