Mortality rates in insects, including grasshoppers (Acrididae), are often stage- or size-specific. We estimated stage-specific mortality rates for three common grasshopper species from a Nebraska (USA) sandhills grassland (Ageneotettix deorum, Melanoplus sanguinipes and Phoetaliotes nebrascensis), and partitioned the impact due to wandering spider predation from remaining sources. Survivorship was estimated for multiple developmental stages (3rd instar through adult) under experimental conditions that either prevented or permitted predation from free-living, wandering spiders (primarily Schizocosa species). Total stage-specific mortality, including spider predation, examined over the period of single stages was greatest for the youngest stages (91% for 3rd instar, 73% for 4th instar, 63.5% for 5th instar and 30.4% for adults). For the developmental stages considered and averaged for all species, the contribution to total mortality from spider predation over the 10-d period (approximately the length of a developmental stage) ranged from 17% for 3rd instar nymphs to 23% for 4th and 5th instars, and an undetectable level for adults. While spiders may depress grasshopper numbers, contributions from spider predation to grasshopper population dynamics are uncertain.  相似文献

1. Prey interact with multiple kinds of enemies such as predators, parasites, and pathogens. Interactions among enemies can alter prey dynamics but they are often studied separately. 2. During the summers of 2005–2006, we conducted a field experiment to examine interactions among grasshoppers, spider predators, and a lethal fungal pathogen of grasshoppers. Grasshopper nymphs were stocked into field enclosures. Predation was manipulated by adding spiders to enclosures on day 1, day 5, or day 10 of the experiment, or no spiders were added. We monitored grasshopper survival and grasshopper mortality from fungal pathogens for 4 weeks. 3. Fungal pathogens were abundant in 2005 but not in 2006, probably because of favourable weather conditions in 2005. When fungal pathogens were abundant, spider presence reduced grasshopper mortality from fungal pathogens, but only when spiders were present early in the experiment (added on day 1 or day 5). 4. The outcome of predator–prey interactions varied between years, probably as a result of differences in pathogen prevalence. In 2005, spider presence reduced the number of deaths from the pathogen, leading to a slight trend of increased grasshopper density. However, in 2006, when pathogens were not an important source of mortality, spider predation was compensatory.  相似文献

Cornops aquaticum (Bruner) has Eichhornia crassipes, E. azurea, Pontederia cordata and P. lanceolata (Pontederiaceae) as the known host plants. This grasshopper species is cited as a possible agent of biological control for native aquatic macrophytes E. azurea and E. crassipes. This study, carried out from March, 2006 to February, 2007, aimed to evaluate the phenology and age structure of the population of C. aquaticum associated with E. azurea in Piuval bay, Pantanal of Poconé, MT, and to identify possible relationships of its life cycle to abiotic factors such as insolation, temperature and precipitation. Monthly collections of 50 individuals were carried out according to the protocol defined by the "Host - Insect Coevolution on Waterhyacinth" project. Adults and nymphs were separated and the females dissected in order to evaluate ovary maturation. The population presented adults and nymphs during the whole year, suggesting the occurrence of more than one reproductive period. The nymphs from the first stage predominated in August 2006 and the adults in September and October 2006, synchronized with the dry period and beginning of the flooding period, respectively. The highest relative abundance of the females with mature ovaries occurred in July 2006 (50%), indicating that this may be a more propitious period for reproduction. The data suggest that C. aquaticum is a species in continual reproduction in Piuval bay and its cycle is associated with the environmental conditions guided by the flood pulse in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso.  相似文献

Color polymorphism in insects as well as factors contributing to its occurrence and maintenance have been of a great interest. Pea aphid (A. pisum) exhibits a noteworthy color polymorphism which occurs as red and green. The preference of the predatory gall midge Aphidoletes aphidimyza (Rondani) for the two color morphs of pea aphid at two life stages (adult and second instar) was investigated. Red adults, red nymphs, green adults, and green nymphs were offered to the larvae of the predator in different sets. The larvae attacked red aphids more than green ones of a same size. But whenever adults were offered along with nymphs, the nymphs experienced significantly more attacks. Although visual cues could result in more predation on red aphids, our findings showed that the size of aphids was the more important factor. The results showed that previous findings, suggesting more predation on the red morph, are valid when the same size of aphids is used. The ovipositing females exhibited no differences in oviposition choice between stalks infested with either of two colors.  相似文献

Sex-specific predation on adult individuals is often predicted by different behaviour in males and females resulting from different reproductive strategies and social systems. High predation pressure and the need for biparental care are considered a possible ecological basis for the evolution of monogamy, the most puzzling social system in mammals. In species where adults and offspring are vulnerable to the same predators, males and females may protect their offspring to different extents because of conflicting demands of investment in current and future offspring. I present the first empirical data on age- and sex-specific predation pressure by top predators on a monogamous rodent and the sex-specific behavioural responses of the prey species to different rates of predation. During an annual predation peak, only offspring and adult males were killed but no females. Whereas males and females travelled similar distances at night before the period of high predation on offspring, males moved further during this period. At the same time, males and females increased their distance from their offspring but males stayed closer to them than females. As a consequence, the distance between the members of the pair increased during the predation peak. The males' behaviour could lead to their encountering predators more frequently which would reduce survival prospects. The different behaviour of males and females provides empirical evidence that males invest in the welfare of current offspring at the cost of higher predation risk whereas females protect their residual reproductive value. Nilaparvata lugens (St?l) (Hemiptera:Delphacidae) is a serious migratory pest of rice in Asia. Pest resurgence often occurs because of insecticide overuse. Using both susceptible (TN1) and moderately resistant (Xieyou 963) cultivars, we studied the effect of foliar insecticides on the percentage of brachypterous adults, female reproductive rate, and crude fat and soluble sugar contents in third- and fifth-instar nymphs and adults. The percentage of brachypterous adults and reproductive rate of adult females developed from nymphs that fed on insecticide-treated plants varied significantly with rice cultivar, type of insecticide, and its concentration. Feeding on susceptible plants increased the percentage of brachypterous adults and reproductive rate of adult females. Also, deltamethrin increased brachypterous production relative to imidacloprid and triazophos. The highest reproductive rate was on plants treated with triazophos. All insecticide treatments in both cultivars resulted in increase of soluble sugar contents in third- and fifth-instar nymphs and adults developed from nymphs feeding on insecticide-treated rice plants. This effect was stronger on the susceptible cultivar. Changes of crude fat content after N. lugens feeding on insecticide-treated plants were related to its feeding duration. Crude fat content in adult developed from nymphs feeding on treated plants was significantly higher that on control plants. These studies showed that plant and insecticide influences on physiological ecology of this planthopper will influence its population dynamics under commercial production of rice in Asia.  相似文献

Equal investment within broods does not always maximize parental reproductive value if the reproductive value of some of the young is low. We examined maternal investment in terms of offspring size in relation to the prospects of survival from predation within broods of the shield bug Elasmucha ferrugata Fabr. (Heteroptera; Acanthosomatidae). Shield bug females guard eggs and first instar nymphs against invertebrate predators by covering the clutch with their body and by behaving aggressively towards their enemies. Survival of eggs was not possible without maternal care. When females were allowed to guard their brood, eggs at the periphery were more vulnerable to predators than eggs at the centre. We found that females laid significantly larger eggs in the safest, central part of the clutch. There seems to be an advantage of large nymph size, since when nymphs were reared separately with low food resources, the larger ones were more likely to survive. Larger nymphs were also more likely to push themselves to the safest, central part of the clutch. Females seem to allocate their resources more to the offspring with the highest probability of avoiding predation. Thus our study supports unequal maternal investment within broods of E.ferrugata.  相似文献

Abstract The effect of the dark-colour-inducing neurohormone (DCIN = [His7]-corazonin) of locusts was investigated in field-collected young and old adults of the grasshopper, Oedipoda miniata (Pallas) (Orthoptera: Acrididae). This species shows homochromy, but neither green-brown, nor phase-dependent colour polymorphism. By injecting graded doses of synthetic DCIN in 2 µL of olive oil, young adults were tested within a week of their last moult, and old adults 3.5 months later, a few weeks before natural termination of their reproductive summer diapause. Colour changes were followed for 28 days after injection. Darkening of the young adults was considerable, but their response to DCIN is more moderate than that of conspecific nymphs, by exhibiting a higher threshold, slower response and weaker maximal response. Old adults also show a clear effect, but their response is even slower and less marked than the response of the young adults. It is concluded that the response to DCIN decreases from nymphs to young adults and it is further decreasing with ageing of the adults.  相似文献

Comparative studies on the reproductive biology of closely related plant species have provided valuable information to understand the causes and consequences of common-rare differences with possible applications for the management of threatened populations. The magnitude and spatiotemporal variability of seed production and pre-dispersal reproductive losses were studied for 3 years in the rare endemic Euphorbia welwitschii and in its widespread congener E. characias. The factors responsible for a decrease in potential seed production in these species were the lack of a functional ovary in the cyathium, ovary and fruit abortion, seed predation by insects and seed abortion. In E. characias, the moth Acroclita subsequana was also responsible for minor reproductive losses. The proportion of male cyathia varied significantly between seasons, populations and species, being consistently higher in E. characias than in E. welwitschii. Reproductive losses that resulted in ovary, fruit and seed abortion affected mostly the endemic species and were heavier in the populations located near the sea due to local adverse climatic conditions. Seed predators inflicted higher reproductive losses to the endemic species than to its widespread congener and their impact was particularly heavy at Risco. The two Euphorbia species differed markedly in cyathia production, with E. welwitschii producing systematically a lower number of cyathia than its widespread congener and this, together with higher levels of ovary, fruit and seed abortion, seemed to be the main reasons for the low reproductive output of this rare species.  相似文献

In many environments land use intensification is likely to result in a decrease in species richness and in an increase in eutrophication. Although the importance of both factors for higher trophic levels such as insect herbivores is well documented, their impact has rarely been studied in combination. Herbivorous insects have a strong impact on the functioning of ecosystems and it is therefore important to understand how they are affected by eutrophication in high or low diversity environments. We used a grassland biodiversity experiment to investigate the combined effect of fertilization and plant diversity loss on the fitness of the generalist grasshopper Chorthippus parallelus by rearing grasshopper nymphs for four weeks in cages on unfertilized or fertilized (NPK) subplots across a species richness gradient from 1 to 60 plant species. Survival, the number of oothecae, body mass and the number of hatchlings were measured separately for each cage. Plant diversity had no effect on any of the grasshopper fitness measures, neither in unfertilized nor in fertilized plots. NPK-fertilization reduced grasshopper survival but increased body mass of males and reproductive success of the surviving females. Fertilization effects were not mediated by plant community structure, productivity or composition, suggesting that higher food plant quality was one of the main drivers. There was no interaction between plant diversity and fertilization on any of the measures. In conclusion, an increase in eutrophication, in both species-rich and species-poor grasslands, could lead to higher reproductive success and therefore higher abundances of herbivorous insects including insect pests, with fertilization effects dominating plant diversity effects.  相似文献

Intraspecific microhabitat segregation is expected to arise when there are age- or sex-specific differences in predation risk. The degree to which conspecific predation (cannibalism) can generate this risk, however, is poorly understood. In this paper, we examine microhabitat use, cannibalism, and individual responses to the presence of conspecifics in Thermosphaeroma thermophilum, an endangered isopod crustacean species that is endemic to a single, thermal spring in Socorro, N.M. USA. In samples from the natural habitat, juveniles (mancas) were found mainly on vegetation, whereas adults were found predominantly on bottom sediments. Females were found on vegetation more often than males. In laboratory containers without refuges, males cannibalized females, males and females cannibalized mancas, and mancas cannibalized each other, even in the presence of alternative food. When placed in containers provided with refuges, mancas actively avoided adults. We suggest, therefore, that cannibalism in T. thermophilum generates age-, size-, and sex-specific predation risks which are responsible for microhabitat segregation between mancas and adults, and between males and females. Since interspecific predation in the spring is negligible, cannibalism appears to play a significant role in population regulation and behavioral evolution in this species. We recommend, given the current “endangered” status of this species, that microhabitat heterogeneity be maintained in its native spring because it provides refuges from cannibalism and may support a larger and more viable natural population. Increasingly, ecologists emphasize that prey frequently change behaviour in the presence of predators and these behavioural changes can reduce prey survival and reproduction as much or more than predation itself. However, the effects of behavioural changes on survival and reproduction may vary with prey density due to intraspecific competition. In field experiments, we varied grasshopper density and threat of avian predation and measured grasshopper behaviour, survival and reproduction. Grasshopper behaviour changed with the threat of predation and these behavioural changes were invariant with grasshopper density. Behavioural changes with the threat of predation decreased per capita reproduction over all grasshopper densities; whereas the behavioural changes increased survival at low grasshopper densities and then decreased survival at high densities. At low grasshopper densities, the total reproductive output of the grasshopper population remained unchanged with predation threat, but declined at higher densities. The effects of behavioural changes with predation threat varied with grasshopper density because of a trade-off between survival and reproduction as intraspecific competition increased with density. Therefore, resource availability may need to be considered when assessing how prey behavioural changes with predation threat affect population and food web dynamics.  相似文献

A microsporidium Nosema sp. was isolated from the grasshopper Chorthippus brunneus (Thunberg) collected in Spain. Infected individuals were found throughout most of the season when nymphs and adults of C. brunneus were present (March-June). Other acridoids collected in the same area were not found to be infected, indicating that this microsporidium is probably host specific. Attempts to artificially infect Dociostarus maroccanus (Thunberg) nymphs failed.  相似文献

Effects of inbreeding on the development and reproduction of the predatory pentatomid Podisus maculiventris were assessed throughout 30 generations following introduction in the laboratory. Developmental and reproductive fitness of two mildly inbred lines did not differ dramatically from that of a reference population. In most generations, egg weight, egg hatch and developmental rate of nymphs were greater in the reference strain than in both inbred strains, but fecundity and longevity did not differ among strains. In the 30th generation, fecundity of all strains had dropped to about half of that observed in the 15th generation, which was presumably related to non-genetic factors. There were consistent differences among strains for adult body weight and size, indicating heritable variation. A positive relationship between weight at day 14 and humeral width of P. maculiventris females was found, but neither of these parameters was associated with total fecundity. In the 30th generation, predators from both inbred lines had generally similar predation capacities to those from the reference population. No significant relationship could be detected between body weights and predation rates of either nymphs or adults. The use of inbreeding to minimize selective adaptation during rearing or to select for favourable traits in P. maculiventris is discussed.  相似文献

Zonocerus variegatus is a common grasshopper in parts of west and equtorial Africa. The distribution in Nigeria extends from the lowland rainforest zone to the savannah in the north. The influence of lure on the behaviour of grasshopper inside cages (120 insect per cage) was investigated. Nymphs and adults of Zonocerus variegatus responded positively to intact leaves, crushed leaves and inflorescence of the common compositae weed Chromolaena odorata inside muslin bags, and intact plants. There were significant differences in the attraction recorded for starved nymphs, fed nymphs and starved adults. Attraction was more to intact leaves and is by olfaction. The increase in the attraction of starved nymphs is time dependent. Attraction to plant parts ceased after the plants were dried for 24 and 48 hours at room temperature and when plants were placed in transparent polythene bags. Gut motility and gut activity were higher during the day than at night. Nymphs, adults and egg pods placed separately inside muslin bags were not attractive to adults or nymphs.  相似文献

Observations of adult and subadult yellow baboons (Papio cynocephalus) revealed class differences in spatial pattern both during movement and when at rest. males tended to spend slightly more time on the periphery than did females, and travelled more at the front. Positions of males reflected their association with females: younger and older adults were more peripheral, while prime adults were focal. Positions of adult females reflected their reproductive state: mothers of young infants were gregarious, but pregnant females were peripheral and travelled at the sides. Lower-ranking females were also more peripheral. These patterns are discussed in relation to male and female reproductive differences as well as to predation.  相似文献

In this paper, we address the question of whether the presence of the burrowing crab Chasmagnathus granulatus affects the habitat use of the fiddler crab Uca uruguayensis. Field samples showed that the species have a disjoint spatial distribution. Male fiddler crab density decreased in zones with C. granulatus, however, female density increased. Male fiddler crabs avoided feeding on sediment affected by C. granulatus and were more preyed. Predation was higher during the fiddler crab reproductive season and, probably due to predation risk, males showed lower reproductive display in shared zones. Field experiments shows that when C. granulatus were excluded, densities of U. uruguayensis increased mainly due to an increase in density of males. Habitat differentiation of these species may be because C. granulatus affects U. uruguayensis in several ways, including direct predation, disturbance and behavioural changes associated to predation risk. Males and females are affected differentially probably because of the extreme sexual dimorphism of this crab species. Coloration on enlarged claw and waving activities are all factors that increase predation risk for male and the presence of only one feeding claw may increase sediment-mediated effects.  相似文献

Influences of photoperiod, temperature and melatonin were examined on development and color patterns of nymphs, and sternum color and reproductive fate of adults in Halyomorpha halys (brevis). Short-day accelerated nymphal development, whereas long-day accelerated reproductive maturation. The two types of photoperiodic responses at different stages may help maintain the univoltinism of this species in the field, assuring the right timing for diapause and reproduction. The pronotum of fifth instar nymphs reared under LD 11:13 shows a brown-marbled color pattern darker, with less creamy-yellowish speckles, than that of nymphs reared under LD 16:8. Short-day-reared fifth instar nymphs, which are destined to diapause in adults, had shorter white stripes on the pronotum, smaller body size, less frequent feeding and more lipid accumulation than the long-day-reared. The longer the exposure to LD 13:11 at 20 degrees C during the nymphal stage, the greater the expression of short-day associated characteristics observed in the fifth nymphal instar and adult stage. Melatonin orally administered (500 microg/ml) to insects under LD 16:8 produced slightly reduced body size, suppressed feeding, extended nymphal period and increased accumulation of lipid compared to the untreated bugs, but did not affect the incidence of diapause in females. In males, melatonin retarded gonadal development under LD16:8. These results may suggest a possible role of melatonin for the control of seasonal polyphenism and development.  相似文献

Several greenhouse experiments were used to measure how high levels of antibiosis resistance to nymphs in two interspecific Brachiaria (brachiariagrass) hybrids affect life history parameters of the spittlebugs Aeneolamia varia (F.) and Zulia carbonaria (Lallemand), two of the most important spittlebug (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) species affecting Brachiaria production in Colombia. The A. varia-resistant hybrid CIAT 36062, the Z. carbonaria-resistant hybrid SX01NO/0102, and the susceptible accession CIAT 0654 were used to compare the effect of all possible combinations of food sources for nymphs and adults. Calculation of growth indexes showed a significant impact of antibiosis resistance on the biology of immature stages of both species. Median survival times of adults feeding on resistant genotypes did not differ from those recorded on the susceptible genotype, suggesting that factors responsible for high mortality of nymphs in the resistant hybrids did not affect adult survival. Rearing nymphs of A. varia on CIAT 36062 and of Z. carbonaria on SX01NO/0102 had deleterious sublethal effects on the reproductive biology of resulting adult females. It is concluded that high nymphal mortality and subsequent sublethal effects of nymphal antibiosis on adults should have a major impact on the demography of the two spittlebug species studied.  相似文献
