Synopsis Lake Malawi/Niassa is a permanently stratified lake, consisting of an oxygenated layer of 230 m depth that overlies an anoxic zone that extends to the lake bottom at a maximum depth of over 700 m. Some fish are found throughout the oxygenated zone of the offshore waters, and lead a pelagic existence, although many of the species form part of the demersal community in shallower waters where the lake-bed is oxygenated. This paper reports on the distribution of cyprinids and catfish at six offshore locations, sampled with a mid-water trawl and gillnets, along the north-south axis of the lake. These two groups formed, respectively, 5% and 13% of the offshore fish biomass in the trawl catches. The offshore cyprinids comprised the small lake-spawningEngraulicypris sardella, the only species to have pelagic larvae, and the larger river-spawningOpsaridium microcephalum andO. microlepis. These cyprinids occurred mainly in the upper 100 m of the water column. The biomass of both larvae and adults ofE. sardella showed considerable fluctuations over the two years of study. The spawning site ofE. sardella remains a mystery, but is no longer believed to be in the offshore pelagic zone. The most abundant catfish was the mochokidSynodontis njassae, that exhibited diurnal movements from just above the oxic-anoxic boundary layer during the day to the surface layers at night. The clariid catfish of the genusBathyclarias were caught infrequently offshore, but owing to their large size, they could form a significant part of the biomass. Their abundance was difficult to quantify, as it was believed that the majority are active in the near-surface layers and were under-sampled by the trawl and gillnets. Information on some aspects of the breeding biology is included in the paper, although our knowledge in this area is very incomplete.  相似文献

With more than 2000 fish species the Cyprinidae is the largest family of vertebrates. Lake Tana, a large lake (3050 km2) situated in the NW‐ highlands of Ethiopia, harbours, as far as we know the only remaining intact species flock of large (max. 100 cm FL) cyprinid fishes (15 Barbus spp.). One of the most intriguing aspects of this endemic Barbus species flock is the large number of piscivores (8). Cyprinid fishes seem not well designed for piscivory, they lack teeth in the oral jaw, have a small slit‐shaped pharyngeal cavity and all lack a stomach with low pH for digesting large prey. Many barbs are benthivorous species, like the ancestral barb in Lake Tana's isolated system. Why then is piscivory, which is rare among cyprinids, so common in Lake Tana Barbus? The aim of present study was to compare the performance and techniques of these piscivorous Barbus with known piscivores from other fish families. We studied prey handling times over prey size, prey capture using high‐speed movies, and assessed the effect of prey size on performance and prey selection in the field. Performances were explained by functional morphology of their feeding system. Overall, Lake Tana's piscivorous Barbus perform relatively 'poor', compared to piscivores from other fish families. For example, Lake Tana's piscivores are only able to handle prey fish smaller than 16% of their own body length. However, Lake Tana lacks potential piscivorous competitors, rendering the piscivorous Barbus by far the 'best' and apparently highly successful. They have adapted to all available macro‐habitats (littoral, offshore pelagic and offshore benthic), using different techniques (ambush, pursuit and cruising), a unique scenario for barbs.  相似文献

Detailed zooplankton records from a 26-cm sediment core with a time resolution of approximately 3–10 years were obtained from Lake Biwa, Japan, to examine the historical variations in the zooplankton community during the 20th century. In the sediments, selected zooplankton remains have fluctuated over the years. Daphnia – large zooplankton herbivores – did not occur from 1900 to 1920, and formed a very minor component of the zooplankton community in the following 30 years, while Bosmina – small zooplankton herbivores – were common during this period. In the mid-1960s, however, when eutrophication was noticeable in this lake, Daphnia numbers increased dramatically and became the dominant zooplankton thereafter. In contrast, Difflugia brevicolla and D. biwae, two amoeboid protozoans that live in connection with the lake bottom environment, occurred abundantly until the late 1950s, but gradually decreased after the mid-1960s. In particular, D. biwae, a species peculiar to this lake, was not found in sediment dated after 1980, suggesting its extinction. These results indicate that the zooplankton community structure changed greatly in the 1960s, and suggest that the eutrophication occurring at this time altered the relative strength of top-down and bottom-up forces on the zooplankton community in Lake Biwa.  相似文献

The piscivorous Nile perch was introduced into Lake Victoria some 30 years ago, since when it has completely transformed the fishing industry and the species composition of the fish fauna of the lake. The original multispecies fishery, based mostly on cichlids (haplochromines, tilapias), cyprinids ( Barbus, Labeo, Rastrineobola ) and siluroids ( Bagrus, Clarias, Synodontis, Schilbe ), has changed dramatically to one based on three species: the introduced Nile perch, the cyprinids, Rastrineobola argenrea (Pellegrin), and the introduced Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus).
Within 25 years of its introduction the Nile perch became ubiquitous and now occurs in virtually every habitat with the exception of swamps and affluent rivers. It has preyed on all other species with profound effects, especially on the stocks of haplochromines. These originally comprised 80% of the total fish biomass in Lake Victoria, but have now decreased to less than 1% offish catches from the Kenyan waters of the lake. The fishermen of Lake Victoria have adjusted to this ecological crisis by using large-meshed nets to catch Nile perch, which has become the most important commercial species. For the first time in the history of Lake Victoria, fish fillets are now being exported to several overseas countries: the fillets are all from Nile perch.  相似文献

Employingin situ enclosures containing inocula of the lake zooplankton (mainlyDaphnia galeata, Daphnia cucullata andBosmina spp.) from a moderately eutrophic Lake Ros (Northern Poland) or large-bodiedDaphina magna, the following observations on succession of phytoplankton were made: 1) whereasD. magna could control the density of all the photoplankton size classes, the lake zooplankton could not suppress the large-sized phytoplankters or net phytoplankton; 2) the lake zooplankton was able to control the density of small algae (< 50μm), but its effect on large algae may be opposite: a promotion of net phytoplankton growth by removing small-sized algae which can out-compete net phytoplankton for limited PO4-P resources (<5μg P l−1). Since efficiency of phytoplankton density control byD. magna decreased with an increase in net phytoplankton abundance, biomanipulation could not be successful without introducing or maintaining a high population of large-bodied cladoceran species before high densities of large algae would make the control of phytoplankton inefficient.  相似文献

Algal communities were compared among benthic and net plankton samples from Cape Maclear, Lake Malai. In the cool mixing season (from May to August), rocks were overgrown byCladophora orCalothrix, accompanied by the diatomsRhopalodia, Cymbella, andNavicula. These diatoms, together withEpithemia andCocconeis, were epiphytic onCladophora and macrophytes. In sandy areas, the common diatoms wereRhopalodia, Fragilaria, Epithemia, Navicula, Surirella, andMelosira. In all phytoplankton samples, taken with a 10 µm mesh net, cyanophyte cells were the most common (70 to 80%), especially those ofOscillatoria. Biomass, however, was dominated byPeridinium from November to April and byAnabaena andOscillatoria from September to April when the mixolimnion was stratified. Among the chlorophytes,Oedogonium was the most common, especially from May into December whenPleodorina became more common.Diatoms dominated the biomass in the mixing season (May to September):Stephanodiscus in May, followed byMelosira nyassensis and lanceolateNitzschia species from mid-June through August. For the rest of the year the epilimnion was stratified and theseNitzschia species were virtually the only diatoms present.Benthic and planktonic communities share few taxa: benthic taxa never made up more than 2% of cells in offshore tows. This conclusion contrasts with previous reports, especially regardingSurirella. Consequently, an abundance of benthic taxa in sediment cores may be interpreted as lower lake level if sediment redistribution can be excluded. The seasonality of the planktonic diatoms is compatible with current ecological hypotheses, and therefore increases their value as paleolimnological indicators.  相似文献

The invertebrate fauna of many Antarctic ice-free areas, even those close to permanent research stations, can be poorly known. Here we describe some nematodes from freshwater and saline, marine-derived lakes of the Vestfold Hills, East Antarctica. The freshwater lakes contained the widespread East Antarctic endemic species, Plectus frigophilus Kirjanova, 1958. The saline lakes were inhabited by two recently described species, Halomonhystera halophila Andrássy, 2006 and Halomonhystera continentalis Andrássy, 2006, and by a new species described in this report, Hypodontolaimus antarcticus sp. n. Originally marine but now brackish Highway Lake contained a nematode fauna with both freshwater and marine-derived components. The nematode fauna of Antarctica now consists of 54 named species, 22 of which are found in East Antarctica.  相似文献

The population dynamics of two small cichlid fishes (Pharyngochromis darlingi andPseudocrenilabrus philander) were studied in Lake Kariba, a very large African man-made lake. They are of no economic importance but make up about 14% and 7% respectively of the inshore fish population and are the major components of the diet of fish-eating birds on the lake.P. darlingi isthe larger species (L = 156.5 mm) and is found on both shelving and steep, eroding shores. Its mortality rate differs in each habitat (Z = 0.44 and 0.72 month–1 respectively), only 0.79% survive for 12 months and its % MathType!MTEF!2!1!+-% feaafiart1ev1aaatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbuLwBLn% hiov2DGi1BTfMBaeXatLxBI9gBaerbd9wDYLwzYbItLDharqqtubsr% 4rNCHbGeaGqiVu0Je9sqqrpepC0xbbL8F4rqqrFfpeea0xe9Lq-Jc9% vqaqpepm0xbba9pwe9Q8fs0-yqaqpepae9pg0FirpepeKkFr0xfr-x% fr-xb9adbaqaaeGaciGaaiaabeqaamaabaabaaGcbaGaamiuaiaac+% cadaqdaaqaaiaadkeaaaaaaa!384D!\[P/\overline B \] ratio is 5.45 (on shelving shores).Ps. philander is smaller (L = 83.9 mm) and is restricted to shelving areas with abundant vegetation. Its monthly mortality rate was high (Z = 7.69), only 0.05% survive to 12 months whilst its % MathType!MTEF!2!1!+-% feaafiart1ev1aaatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbuLwBLn% hiov2DGi1BTfMBaeXatLxBI9gBaerbd9wDYLwzYbItLDharqqtubsr% 4rNCHbGeaGqiVu0Je9sqqrpepC0xbbL8F4rqqrFfpeea0xe9Lq-Jc9% vqaqpepm0xbba9pwe9Q8fs0-yqaqpepae9pg0FirpepeKkFr0xfr-x% fr-xb9adbaqaaeGaciGaaiaabeqaamaabaabaaGcbaGaamiuaiaac+% cadaqdaaqaaiaadkeaaaaaaa!384D!\[P/\overline B \] ratio was very high (7.69). The estimates of growth obtained forP. darlingi differ considerably from those given in an earlier study in Lake Kariba and some possible reasons for this are discussed. In suitable habitats, the combined production of both species could be 40 kg ha–1 yr–1 which indicates their potential importance to the ecology of the lake.  相似文献

Models predict that sympatric speciation depends on restrictive parameter ranges, such as sufficiently strong disruptive selection and assortative mating, but compelling examples in nature have rarely been used to test these predictions. I measured the strength of assortative mating within a species complex of Tilapia in Lake Ejagham, Cameroon, a celebrated example of incipient sympatric adaptive radiation. This species complex is in the earliest stages of speciation: morphological and ecological divergence are incomplete, species differ primarily in breeding coloration, and introgression is common. I captured 27 mated pairs in situ and measured the diet, color, size, and morphology of each individual. I found strong assortative mating by color, size, head depth, and dietary source of benthic or pelagic prey along two independent dimensions of assortment. Thus, Ejagham Tilapia showed strong assortative mating most conducive to sympatric speciation. Nonetheless, in contrast to a morphologically bimodal Sarotherodon cichlid species pair in the lake, Ejagham Tilapia show more limited progress toward speciation, likely due to insufficient strength of disruptive selection on morphology estimated in a previous study (γ = 0.16). This supports the predicted dependence of sympatric speciation on strong assortment and strong disruptive selection by examining a potentially stalled example in nature.  相似文献

A member of the Cyprinidae family, the Chalcalburnus tarichi is a fish species that only inhabits the Lake Van Basin. The Lake Van represents an interesting ecosystem in the world, known as the biggest soda lake in the world, in that its water is highly alkaline with a pH of 9.8. C. tarichi has bright-silver color, its back is grayish green, and the abdominal region is silver. Its body is covered with small scales, and its eyes are large. It feeds on phyto and zooplanktons. Its average life span is 7 years, and the fish reaches reproductive maturity at 3 years old. C. tarichi is an diadrom fish that lives in the lake, but during the reproduction period it immigrates to the surrounding freshwater rivers returning after the reproduction period of April–July. In the past, pearl mullet was an attractive fresh fish for the local people and was easily caught during the spawning migration, resulting in over-fishing. The species was one of the highly endangered animals of Turkey before conservation studies, some 10 years ago, have started. At present, illegal fishing activities declined, although some locals are continuing to fish during the spawning season.  相似文献

The term house-dust mite usually refers to those species of the mite family Pyroglyphidae, that are known to commonly occur, although sometimes regionally, in the dust of human dwellings. These species belong to five genera:Dermatophagoides, Euroglyphus, Hirstia, andMalayoglyphus. Related species ofDermatophagoides have the most world-wide occurrence, the commonest being:D. farinae, D. microceras, andD. pteronyssinus. A correct taxonomic identification of house-dust mites is very important, not only from a biological stand point, but also regarding the consequences of their respective allergenical properties. Several immuno-chemical studies revealed differences between the products of two hard to distinguish sibling species. A preliminary practical taxonomic key for the most common and important house-dust mites is presented.  相似文献

Chironomidae were collected in floating emergence traps on 27.5 m deep Findley Lake in the coniferous forest of the Cascade Mountains, USA, from 1972 to 1975. There was considerable yearly variation in the date of thaw, the total number of Chironomidae that emerged and the relative abundance of each species. In 1972, 1973 and 1975 when there were early thaws, Tanytarsus and Procladius were the most common Chironomidae. Many of the common species started to emerge before the lake had completely thawed. In 1973 when most of the lake thawed June 7 and the surface water reached a maximum temperature of 19.25 °C in July, the Tanytarsus chinyensis group, Stictochironomus and Chironomus started to emerge from deep water when there was still ice along shore. Procladius nr gretis and Orthocladius started to emerge two days after the last ice had melted. In 1974 when most of the lake did not thaw until July 30–31, the surface water reached a maximum temperature of only 12.5 °C in August. Only a fifth as many Chironomidae emerged as in 1973. Most of these were Procladius and Orthocladius which had their maximum emergence when most of the lake was still frozen. The emergence of each species was reduced except Orthocladius. Procladius contributed the greatest biomass that emerged each year, but the second greatest biomass was contributed by different genera each year.  相似文献

Lake Superior receives a disproportionate number of ballast water discharges from transoceanic ships operating on the Laurentian Great Lakes. Although this provides dispersal opportunities for nonindigenous species (NIS), relatively few NIS were initially discovered in this lake prior to being recorded elsewhere in the basin. A lack of NIS records from this lake may be an artefact of sampling bias. We tested this hypothesis by sampling benthos and plankton from littoral and deepwater habitats around the perimeter of Lake Superior during June and August 2001. Using morphological analysis techniques, we identified a total of 230 invertebrate taxa representing planktonic, benthic and nektonic lifestyles. Five species with invasion histories in the lower Great Lakes, the bivalves Sphaerium corneum, Pisidium amnicum and P. moitessierianum, gastropod Potamopyrgus antipodarum and amphipod Echinogammarus ischnus, were identified for the first time in Lake Superior. In addition, records of expanded distributions within this lake are presented for the amphipod Gammarus fasciatus and oligochaetes Ripistes parasita and Vejdovskyella intermedia. Recently introduced NIS in Lake Superior were found near international ports, implicating shipping as the vector of their introduction. Intrinsic physical-chemical aspects of Lake Superior may account for the scarcity of NIS in this lake as compared to the lower Great Lakes.  相似文献

Synopsis In seasonally flooding fresh waters, dissolved oxygen and fluctating water levels combine to create strong seasonal changes in habitat availability and dispersal pathways for fishes. In this study we demonstrate how respiratory mode can affect the use of and dispersal through hypoxic papyrus swamps for a small cyprinid fish, Barbus neumayeri, a species which uses aquatic surface respiration (ASR) in response to severe hypoxia. Monthly records of the distribution and relative abundance of B. neumayeri across 28 stations in a papyrus swamp in Uganda were used to examine seasonal patterns of habitat use and movement. The distribution of B. neumayeri was very restricted during the drier months. Most fish were captured in open pools and channels with large areas of open water surface and higher oxygen. Movement of B. neumayeri was limited to short periods during the wet season when peak water levels produced high levels of oxygen and pathways for movement. Three lines of evidence suggest that these patterns relate to its respiratory mode. These include: the positive :relationship between dissolved oxygen and the number of stations used per month, the positive relationship between fish density at dry season stations and dissolved oxygen, and the absence of fish from stations with. little open water surface area during the dry season. Significant differences in the gill morphology between B. neumayeri from the papyrus swamp and those from the main river suggest that papyrus swamps may contribute to the diversification of B. neumayeri by limiting movement and demanding specialization for extremely hypoxic waters.  相似文献

Summary A study has been made on changes which have occurred in the fish fauna as a result of the formation of the Volta Lake in Ghana. The data on the relative abundance of fish in the Lake were compared with those obtained from fish landings on the Black Volta and from the Niger river survey, as no observations of fish abundance were made on the Volta River before the Akosombo dam was closed. General changes in the relative abundance of the most important families of fish are described and the changes in the relative abundance of six feeding types in the Volta Lake and Black Volta, based on more than 700 stomach and gut analyses of 50 species of fish, are compared with those of the fish found in the Zambezi River and Lake Kariba in Central Africa. The most characteristic features of the changes in fish fauna are an increase in plankton feeders, so that these are becoming dominant in some areas; a great decrease in mormyrids in the Lake as compared with the river, and a similar drop in the characid Alestes, while Tilapia has increased. These changes are not uniform throughout the lake, and differences are most marked along the North-South axis.Department of Zoology and Volta Basin Research Project, University of Ghana  相似文献

African diploid barbs (‘Barbus’, Clypeobarbus, Barboides, etc.) are a group of small cyprinids with a body size less than 20 cm and widely distributed in drainages across Africa. These species constitute a significant component of African freshwater fish fauna. This study is the first to focus on the molecular systematics and biogeography of African diploid barbs ‘Barbus’ and its African and Asian allies using both mitochondrial and nuclear genes. We test for monophyly of groups, determine interspecific relationships and estimate the time of divergence of 52 species of ‘Barbus’ and allies using two mitochondrial and four nuclear genes. Resulting trees demonstrate that ‘Barbus’ and allies (Systomus, Barboides, Clypeobarbus and African tetraploid barbs) form a strongly supported clade; however, ‘Barbus’ is not resolved as monophyletic. Divergence time analyses identify the separation between Systomus and ‘Barbus’ plus African allies may have occurred around 26 MYA. In addition to the phylogenetic results, these findings highlight the need for more thorough taxonomic and systematic studies on ‘Barbus’ and allies using morphological and additional molecular data and greater taxon sampling, including the type species of the genus Enteromius, ‘Barbus’ potamogalis.  相似文献

This study reports length–weight relationships for 10 species of fish encountered in the only two freshwater lakes wholly in the Rift Valley of Kenya, Naivasha and Baringo. In Lake Naivasha, none of the species analysed was native to the lake. Two were introduced species non‐native to East Africa (Micropterus salmoides, Cyprinus carpio), with three native to East Africa but not to the lake (Tilapia zillii, Oreochromis leucostictus, Barbus paludinosus). In Lake Baringo, all species were native (Oreochromis niloctictus baringoensis, Labeo cylindricus, Barbus intermedius autralis, Barbus lineomaculatus, Clarias gariepinus). Specimens were collected by gill netting in September 2004 and October 2005. With the exception of B. lineomaculatus, the b values in the relationship W = aLb were between 2.90 and 3.22.  相似文献
