Stages of Metaseiulus occidentalis sensitive to photoperiod induction of diapause were determined by transferring various stadia into diapause-inducing conditions, and rearing them until adult females could be scored for reproductive condition. When eggs were transferred to 10 hr light at 19°C from 24 hr light at 25°C and the mites reared to adults, 92 per cent entered diapause. When larvae and all subsequent stages were kept under the inductive conditions, 62 per cent of adult females diapaused. Mites transferred as protonymphs into inductive conditions yielded only 10 per cent in diapause, and mites transferred as deutonymphs or newly emerged females did not enter diapause.However, adult females reared from eggs at 19°C under 12 hr light (which is near the critical photophase of 11·2 hr at 19°C) showed an unexpected sensitivity to photoperiod. Some newly emerged females oviposited upon transfer to an 8 hr photophase at 19°C. Some then stopped ovipositing and apparently entered diapause; these females resumed ovipositing after intervals ranging from 34 to 100 days. This was termed ‘switching’ into diapause. Some females reared under a 16 hr photophase at 19°C ‘switched’ also upon transfer as adults to shorter photophases—either 8 or 12 hr at 19°C. Thus, ‘switching’ may be due to transfer to shorter photophases. Promptness of mating vs delayed mating allowed ‘switching’ to be more easily detected. 相似文献

亚洲玉米螟Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenée)属兼性滞育昆虫, 其滞育特性与种群利用适生境的最大化和季节性活动密切相关。解析季节性因素如光周期和温度对其滞育的诱导作用可为预测种群发生动态提供科学依据。本实验在HPS 500型和HPG-320H型自动控制环境气候箱中, 测定了RH 80%下温度20℃, 27℃和30℃与11个光周期组合对吉林农安(NA)、 河北衡水(HS)、 广东惠州(HZ)和海南海口(HK)等4个地理种群的滞育诱导作用。结果表明: 光周期、 温度及其交互作用均对亚洲玉米螟滞育诱导具有重要影响, 其中光周期在滞育诱导中起主导作用。在20℃条件下, 其光周期反应曲线属典型的长日照反应型, 临界光周期随种群分布的地理纬度降低而缩短, 4个地理种群NA, HS, HZ和HK的临界日昼长依次为14 h 3 min, 13 h 59 min, 13 h 32 min和13 h 7 min, 最有效的滞育诱导光周期是日昼长12 h。另一方面, 随种群分布纬度升高, 其对光周期诱导滞育的敏感性降低。温度为27℃时, 其光周期反应曲线为短日照 长日照反应型, 各种群有两个临界光周期, 临界日昼长依次为12 h 50 min和13 h 32 min, 11 h 35 min和13 h 8 min, 12 h 58 min和13 h 1 min, 以及11 h 50 min和12 h 26 min, 且最有效的滞育诱导光周期范围的滞育率明显低于20℃。一定温度范围内(20℃~27℃), 随温度升高, 临界光周期缩短; 温度达到30℃时则滞育显著被抑制, 滞育率仅为4.3%或更低。这些结果说明温度对亚洲玉米螟滞育的光周期诱导具有很强的补偿作用。因此, 在自然界亚洲玉米螟的滞育属具有温度补偿作用的长日照反应型昆虫, 临界光周期随地理纬度北移而增长; 种群滞育的短日照 长日照反应型特性可能是产生局部世代种群的重要内因。 相似文献

The effect of photoperiod on diapause induction, developmental time and body size was examined in Melanoplus sanguinipes, the lesser migratory grasshopper. Contrary to what is found in most insects, facultative diapause-egg production is found to be controlled by changing rather than constant photoperiods. In addition, developmental time is shown to be faster under short-day photoperiods than long-day photoperiods. And finally, body size is larger under long-day photoperiods and smaller under short-day photoperiods. Implications of these results for the regulation of the seasonal life cycle of M. sanguinipes in the field are discussed. 相似文献

Abstract Sericinus montelus overwinters as diapausing pupae. In the present study, the effects of photoperiod and temperature on diapause induction and termination of diapause are investigated. The results obtained demonstrate that high temperature can reverse the effect of short day‐lengths on diapause induction. Under an LD 12 : 12 h photoperiod, all pupae enter diapause at 15, 20 and 25 °C, whereas all pupae develop without diapause at 35 °C. No pupae enter diapause under an LD 14 : 10 h photoperiod when the temperature is above 20 °C. Photoperiodic response curves obtained at 25 and 30 °C indicate that S. montelus is a long‐day species and the critical day‐length is approximately 13 h at 25 °C. At 25 °C, the duration of diapause is shortest when the diapausing pupae are maintained under an LD 16 : 8 h photoperiod and increases under LD 14 : 10 h and LD 12 : 12 h photoperiods. Under an LD 16 : 8 h photoperiod, the duration of diapause is shortest when the diapausing pupae are maintained at 25 °C, followed by 20 and 30 °C, and then at 15 °C. These results suggest that a moderate temperature favours diapause development under a diapause‐averting photoperiod in this species. The duration of diapause induced by an LD 12 : 12 h photoperiod is significantly longer at 25 °C than those at 15, 20 and 30 °C, and is shortest at 15 °C. At 25 °C, the duration of diapause induced by LD 6 : 18, LD 12 : 12 and LD 13 : 11 h photoperiods is similar and longer than 90 days. Thus, the diapause‐inducing conditions may affect diapause intensity and a photoperiod close to the critical day‐length has significant influence on diapause intensity in S. montelus. 相似文献

Some diapause characteristics were studied in a strain of the spider mite. Tetranychus urticae. which had been reared on bean plants in the laboratory for over 15 yr. The diapause induction response curve was of the long-day type, showing a sharply defined critical daylength of 13 hr 50 min. In constant darkness no diapause induction occurred, but with a photoperiod of 1L:23D diapause incidence was already complete. A thermoperiod with a 5°C amplitude induced diapause in combination with a short-day photoperiod only when the low phase of the thermoperiod coincided with the scotophase. The same thermoperiod did not induce any diapause in constant darkness. The photoperiodic reaction of the laboratory strain used in these experiments appeared to remain constant over a very long period of time and to be independent of the diapause history of previous generations of mites.Although photoperiodic sensitivity was demonstrated during the whole postembryonic development, sensitivity was maximal at the end of the protonymphal instar and declined rapidly during the deutonymphal instar. Only 2 inductive cycles of 10L:14D were required to induce up to 62% diapause if the mites were kept in continuous darkness during the remainder of their development. Long days or continuous light could reverse the inductive effect of a sequence of short-day cycles previously applied to the mites.Light breaks of 1 hr duration applied at different times during the dark period of a 10L:14D photoperiod generated a sharp bimodal response curve with two discrete points of sensitivity to the light breaks at 10 hr after ‘dusk’ and 10 hr before ‘dawn’, thus showing a remarkable similarity with the results obtained in light break experiments with some species of insects. 相似文献

Daylength was shown to control embryonic diapause in Aedes atropalpus. A northern and southern strain were studied and their critical photoperiods reflected differences of latitude between the sources of the strains. The sensitive for light reception was the fourth larval instar and pupa of the maternal generation. This is the first instance of maternal induction of diapause to be reported in the family Culicidae. The effect of long photoperiods was shown to be independent from that of low temperature, thereby emphasizing that the deposition of diapausing eggs during fall is clearly an expression of the influence of shorter days on the mosquito.
Zusammenfassung Es wurde nachgewiesen, daß die embryonale Diapause von Aedes atropalpus von der Tageslänge beherrscht wird. Ein nördlicher, aus einer Wildpopulation von 42°N isolierter Stamm wurde mit einem südlichen, aus einer Population von 30° N isolierten, verglichen. Die kritischen Photoperioden der beiden Stämme spiegeln den Breiten-Unterschied ihrer Herkunft wider. Die kritische Photoperiode lag für den nördlichen Stamm zwischen 14 und 15 Stunden Licht pro Tag, die für den südlichen nahe 13 Stunden. Nondiapause-Eier wurden von dem nördlichen Stamm auch bei sehr kurzen Photophasen, von 6 Stunden Licht und weniger, abgelegt. Das sensible Stadium für die Photoperiode-Wahrnehmung lag im 4. Larven- und im Puppenstadium der mütterlichen Generation. Dies ist der erste Fall mütterlicher Vererbung der Diapause, der für Culiciden nachgewiesen wird. Die Wirkung langer Photophasen erwies sich als unabhängig von niederen Temperatur, wodurch deutlich wird, daß die Ablage diapausierender Eier während des Herbstes ein eindeutiger Ausdruck des Einflusses der Kurztage auf die Mücken ist.相似文献

The effect of the photoperiod experienced maternally on the induction of an egg diapause was studied in the grashopper Chorthippus bornhalmi Harz (Acridoidea: Gomphocerinae), which lives on the southern Balkan peninsula. Photoperiods used ranged from L12:D12 to L20:D4 and were kept constant, or were increased or decreased after the imaginal ecdysis in other experiments. Under most conditions in the study, the females laid almost only diapause eggs (not less than 93%). Using constant day-lengths, only at L14:D10 the percentage of non-diapause eggs was somewhat higher (20%). An increase in day-length from moderately long (L14:D10) to long day (L16:D8) was necessary for non-diapause eggs to predominate. However, the percentage of non-diapause eggs decreased with the age of the females, except when the day-length was raised a second time. An increase from short day (L12:D12) to moderately long day (L14:D10) or from long day (L16:D8) to extremely long day (L18:D6) as well as a decrease of day-length, all resulted in the production of diapause eggs. The consequences for the life cycle are discussed.
Zusammenfassung Der einfluß der Photoperiode auf die maternelle Induktion einer Eidiapause beim Grashüpfer Chorthippus bornhalmi wurde untersucht. Die Art lebt auf der südöstlichen Balkanhalbinsel. Die getesteten Photoperioden reichten von L12:D12 bis L20:D4. In einem Teil der Versuche wurde die Photoperiode während des gesamten Lebens der Grashüpfer konstant gehalten, in anderen nach der Imaginalhäutung erhöht oder erniedrigt. Unter den meisten Bedingungen legten die Grashüpfer-Weibchen fast ausschließlich Diapause-Eier (mehr als 93%). Bei konstanten Tageslängen stieg der Anteil der Subitaneier lediglich nach einer Eiablage bei L14:D10 auf 20%. Eine Erhöhung der Photophase von 14 auf 16 Stunden war notwendig, damit der Anteil an Subitaneier überwog. Aber auch unter diesen Bedingungen nahm ihr Anteil mit dem Alter der Weibchen ab, außer wenn die Photophase noch ein zweites Mal (auf 18 Stunden) verlängert worden war. Eine Zunahme der Tageslänge von Kurztag (L12:D12) auf mäßigen Langtag (L14:D10) oder auch von Langtag (L16:D8) auf extremen Langtag (L18:D6) sowie eine Abnahme der Tageslänge hatten zur Folge, daß die Weibchen fast ausschließlich Diapause-Eier legten. Auf grund der spezialisierten Form der Diapause-Induktion können die Grashüpfer im Freiland nur im Frühjahr Subitaneier legen.相似文献

In the genus Trichogramma, the prepupal stage can survive the cold season in diapause. However, optimal conditions for the induction of this cessation of development during the process of mass production of the parasitoid in a biological control program depend on the species. In Trichogramma cacoeciae Marchal (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), diapause is induced more easily if the parents are reared under short‐day conditions (L10:D14), and if the temperature is 10 °C rather than 13 °C. However, the effect of parental photoperiod on diapause induction is weaker at lower temperatures (10 °C). Following diapause induction, individuals can be stored at 3 °C for several months, up to 1 year. Non‐optimal conditions led to the establishment of a quiescent state in some or all individuals. In such cases, it was necessary to reduce the storage period to 1 or 2 months only, to prevent high mortality rates and low fecundity. 相似文献

Abstract. The grape berry moth, Lobesia botrana Denn. & Sciff. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), one of the most injurious pest of grape berries in Greece, is a multivoltine species that overwinters as diapausing pupae. The effects of several diel and non-diel photoperiods and of temperature, experienced by eggs and larvae, on pupal diapause induction were investigated. The diapause response curve was of Type I (long day type) and the determining factor was the duration of scotophase (> 11 h), regardless of the duration of photophase. However, at very short (< 4 h) photoperiods, the incidence of diapause was also high. Diapause was positively and significantly correlated with the egg-larval developmental time, pupal mortality and the duration of the pupal stage. Eggs and larvae reared under LD 12 : 12 h photoperiod and various temperatures (from 12 to 30 °C) produced diapausing pupae (almost 100%), but the duration of the pupal stage (intensity of diapause) increased with increasing temperature. Under continuous darkness, however, the percentage diapause decreased with increasing temperature. Single and double 1-h light pulses were applied systematically at various times during the scotophase of six diapause-inducing diel photoperiods. Two photosensitive points in time (called A and B) were revealed, during which illumination resulted in a significant decrease of diapause induction. The yellow peach moth, Conogethes punctiferalis (Guenée), a multivoltine species that overwinters as diapausing larvae, is one of the most serious insect pests on maize in China. Effect of photoperiod and temperature on larval diapause was examined under empirical laboratory conditions. Short‐day treatments caused larval diapause at 25°C, and the critical photoperiod was between 12 and 13 h (or 12 h 51 min) light per day. No sensitive instar was identified for diapause induction under alternated short‐ (L : D 11 : 13 h) and long‐day (L : D 14 : 10 h) treatments at different larval stages. However, accumulative treatment of three instars and 10 d under short‐day treatment was required for the induction of 50% larval diapause. All larvae entered diapause at 20°C, whereas less than 3% did so at 30°C, irrespective of the long‐ or short‐day treatment. Furthermore, under the short‐day treatment, more than 90% of larvae went into diapause with temperatures ≤ 25°C, but less than 17% did so at 28°C. In contrast, under the long‐day treatment, less than 19% of larvae went into diapause with temperatures ≥ 23°C. The forward shift (5°C) of critical temperature under the long‐day regime demonstrated the compensatory effect of temperature and photoperiod on diapause induction. In conclusion, C. punctiferalis had a temperature‐dependent type I photoperiodic diapause response; there was no sensitive instar for diapause determination, but the photoperiodic accumulation time countermeasures both of the short‐day cycles and the number of instars exposed, and the photoperiodic diapause response, was a temperature‐compensated phenomenon. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. Embryonic diapause of the silkworm, Bombyx mori , is generally induced by temperature and photoperiod during the egg stage of the previous generation and not in the larval stage. However, when silkworm larvae are reared on an artificial diet instead of mulberry leaves, their diapause is strongly affected by temperature and photoperiod experienced in the larval stage, with a distinct long-day response for diapause induction. Moreover when larvae which have been reared on artificial diet under long-day condition are fed mulberry leaves even for a short period of time, most of the resultant female adults lay diapause eggs. These results suggest that the photoperiodic response of larvae for diapause induction may be strongly suppressed by some components in mulberry leaves. 相似文献

To study the question whether photoperiodic time measurement in the spider mite Tetranychus urticae is based on a qualitative or quantitative principle, the duration of diapause development was determined in individual females at various constant photoperiods at 19 degrees C. Diapause duration at all four long-night treatments fluctuated around 64.5 days, varying from 62.2 at LD 12:12h to 66.4 at LD 10:14h. The within-treatment variation in diapause duration of the long-night groups appeared to be significantly correlated to the nightlength of the photoperiods used; the longer the nightlength, the higher the within-treatment variation. Frequency distributions of females completing diapause under the two regimes with nightlengths near the critical nightlength were skewed to the right. Mean diapause durations at these regimes, LD 13:11h and LD 14:10h, were 25.4 and 11.9 days, respectively. Mites completed diapause rapidly and synchronously under the three short-night photoperiods tested; within two weeks after transfer from cold storage at 4 degrees C to the diapause terminating regimes at 19 degrees C all females started reproduction. Mean diapause durations were 8.1, 6.4 and 6.5 days for the short-night treatments LD 15:9h, LD 17:7h and LD 19:5h, respectively. The coefficients of variation of diapause duration (variability within groups relative to the mean) of the short-night and the long-night groups varied from 18 to 42%; the coefficients of the two intermediate groups were 69and 81%. There was a clear difference in diapause duration between long-night and short-night groups, but no significant difference was present in this characteristic between different long-night groups on the one hand and only a small difference between different short-night groups on the other. These results support the hypothesis that photoperiodic time measurement in the spider mite is based on a qualitative principle; photoperiods are classified as either 'long' or 'short' in relation to a 'critical' photoperiod. However, around the critical nightlength, intermediate responses were observed which might hint at the quantitative nature of the underlying mechanism. Therefore, although most results are in agreement with the hypothesis of a qualitative mechanism, it cannot be excluded that photoperiodic time measurement in the spider mite is based on a quantitative principle. 相似文献

Prefeeding exposure of female Argas (Persicargas) arboreus to short photoperiod (SP) induces diapause, expressed as oviposition delay for more than 40 days postfeeding. Diapause incidence increases as prefeeding SP exposure periods increase. Postfeeding SP exposure is not essential to maintain diapause. Postfeeding exposure to SP without prefeeding SP exposure does not induce diapause. A 2 week prefeeding exposure to long photoperiod (LP) terminates diapause in two-thirds of the females exposed to LP after feeding. The remaining one-third, which may differ genetically, require a 6 week LP prefeeding exposure to terminate diapause. An 8 week prefeeding exposure to LP is required to terminate diapause in females exposed to SP after feeding. 相似文献

【目的】为明确诱导管侧沟茧蜂Microplitis tuberculifer 滞育的主要因子,在田间和室内研究了不同温度和光周期下管侧沟茧蜂的滞育率和滞育茧的最佳冷藏温度。【方法】田间实验分别从8月31日到9月25日每隔5 d在室外罩笼内释放管侧沟茧蜂寄生的粘虫幼虫,待寄生蜂结茧后统计子代蜂的滞育率。室内实验共设5个不同温度(16℃, 18℃, 20℃, 22℃和24℃)和7个不同光周期(6L:18D, 8L:16D, 10L:14D, 12L:12D, 14L:10D, 16L:8D和18L:6D),分别统计寄生蜂在各个处理条件下的滞育率。【结果】在河北中部地区秋季自然条件下,8月底当日平均气温为24.4℃,日平均光照时间为12 h 51 min 时,少数蛹(5.08%)开始进入滞育;9月25日,当日平均气温为17.2℃,日平均光照时间为11 h 36 min以下时,几乎所有蛹个体进入滞育,滞育率达到99.70%。在室内人工控制条件下,当温度为22℃以上,无论光周期如何变化,管侧沟茧蜂不能进入滞育,所结茧全部为非滞育茧。温度为22℃以下存在光周期反应,在温度16℃, 18℃和20℃,光周期10L:14D时形成滞育茧数量最多,滞育率分别为100%, 89.75% 和 29.58%。可见温度和光周期二者共同影响管侧沟茧蜂的滞育。滞育茧在0℃左右条件下冷藏 240 d 和5℃左右环境条件下冷藏180 d, 成虫的羽化率和寄生能力与发育茧差异不显著(P>0.05);0℃条件下冷藏300 d,滞育茧仍有79%可以正常羽化。【结论】该寄生蜂在秋季进入滞育主要是低温条件和短光照反应相互作用的结果,滞育茧在0℃和5℃温度下至少可以保存240 d。这些结果对管侧沟茧蜂的大规模繁殖和滞育茧的保存具有重要参考价值。 相似文献

Abstract. The interactive effects of temperature (20 °C or 25 °C) and photoperiod (LD 12 : 12 h or LD 15 : 9 h) on diapause induction and termination are investigated in the west‐Japan type yellow‐spotted longicorn beetle, Psacothea hilaris (Pascoe) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae). Larval diapause of P. hilaris is induced under three diapause‐inducing conditions (20 °C–SD, 20 °C–LD and 25 °C–SD), and the diapause larvae are transferred to one of four conditions (20 °C–SD, 20 °C–LD, 25 °C–SD or 25 °C–LD) for observation of pupation, which indicates termination of diapause. The intensity of diapause induced under the three conditions increases in the order 20 °C–SD < 25 °C–SD < 20 °C–LD, when assessed by the time course of pupation after the transfer. On the other hand, the effectiveness of the temperature–photoperiod combinations to terminate diapause is in the order 25 °C–SD (ineffective) < < 20 °C–LD < 25 °C–LD < 20 °C–SD. Among the temperatures (5, 10, 15 and 20 °C) examined, 15 °C is the most effective in terminating diapause under the short day; diapause in most larvae appears to have been completed in 15 days. 相似文献

Abstract. Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) shows a facultative diapause in the third, and final larval, instar after the cessation of feeding. The effects of photoperiod and temperature on the induction and duration of diapause were examined in parental (G0) and current (G1) generations. Insects of the G0 generation were reared under four combinations of conditions, involving two photoperiods, LD 16 : 8 and LD 12 : 12 h, and two temperatures, 25 and 20 °C. The G1 generation, present in the eggs laid by these insects, were transferred to 10 combinations of conditions, involving the above two photoperiods and five temperatures, 25, 20, 17.5, 15 and 12.5 °C. In the G1 generation, the time from hatching to cessation of feeding was significantly affected by temperature only, whereas the induction of diapause was influenced by both photoperiod and temperature experienced by the G0 as well as the G1 generation. Short-day and low-temperature conditions in the G0 and in the G1 generation had diapause-inducing effects. In this species, it is likely that, for purposes of acquiring reliable seasonal information, induction of diapause is sensitive to environmental factors both in the G0 and G1 generations. The function of high-intensity diapause, induced by short-day conditions and high temperature in the parental generation, appeared to be the prevention of accidental pupariation in warm autumn weather. 相似文献

in Ontario, Canada.P. blancardella exhibited a long-day response to photoperiod: long daylengths resulted in uninterrupted development whereas short daylengths
induced diapause. The estimated critical photoperiod for diapause induction was L14.25∶D9.75. The larvae of leafminers destined
to enter diapause took ca. 3× longer to complete development than the larvae of non-diapausing leafminers. The development
prolonging effect of photoperiod decreased with decreasing daylength. Temperature modified the diapause inducing effect of
photoperiod. At L14.25∶D9.75, diapause incidence was similar at 15 and 20°C but was lower at 25°C. Photoperiod also altered
the normal relationship between development rate and temperature. At L14.25∶D9.75, the duration of larval development of diapausing
leafminers was similar at 15, 20 and 25°C. Temperature alone is unlikely to have a role in the induction of diapause because

Critical daylength varied only little at temperatures between 15.0 and 22.5°C.All post-embryonic and possibly even late-embryonic stages of development were found to be sensitive to photoperiod; sensitivity appeared to be maximal during the protonymphal stage.It is shown that -carotene is necessary for some early step in the physiological mechanism of photoperiodic induction, and not (or not exclusively) for the expression of the diapause response.Two points of sensitivity to light could be demonstrated in the nights ofld 1311 andld 1212 long-night regimes, using 1-h night interruptions. These results are similar to those obtained in lightbreak experiments with spider mites and insects. However, no effect was found with light interruptions applied during the dark phase of anld 1014 long-night regime.In resonance experiments with a constant photophase (12 h) and a variable scotophase, a weak rhythmic response was found at 22.5°C; at 19.0°C this effect was completely absent.The relative humidity experienced by the mites during diapause induction as well as during diapause development influenced the rate of diapause completion under long days (ld 168). Diapause duration appeared to be shortest when the mites experienced low relative humidity (35±5%) during diapause induction and high relative humidity (75±5%) during diapause termination, and longest under the reverse conditions. 相似文献
