A field experiment was conducted at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) Center, Patancheru, India to study photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) interception and dry matter production relationships in pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke). Two pearl millet genotypes, BJ 104 (G1) and ICH 226 (G2) were sown at three planting geometries obtained by using combinations of row and plant spacings (S1: 37·5 cm × 26·6 cm; S2: 75·0 cm × 13·3 cm; S3: 150·0 cm × 6·6 cm) such that plant population was constant at 100 000 ha−1 in all treatments. Cumulative intercepted PAR was maximum (330 MJ m−2) in G2S2 and minimum (268 MJ m−2) in G1S3. Conversion efficiency values ranged from 1·87 g MJ−1 in G1S2 to 2·32 g MJ−1 in G2S3. Final above-ground dry matter followed the pattern of cumulative intercepted PAR and maximum dry matter (7·22 Mg ha−1) was produced by G2S2 while G1S3 produced minimum dry matter (4·97 Mg ha−1).  相似文献

Although aflatoxin (AFT) effects on Arachis hypogaea seed germination have been examined, there have been few, if any, investigations correlating germination capacity to field AFT levels for naturally contaminated peanuts. Here, we report this analysis for selected Federal samples containing 0–20 ppb AFT collected at intervals during both September and October 1981. Following the removal of both decoated and split seeds for screening, seeds were germinated for 5 days when both dead and severely infested seeds were discarded. The remaining seeds, normal (uninfested) ‘sprouted’, ‘sprouted’ with some infestation, ‘sprouted’ with morphological abnormalities and normal unsprouted, were both measured and transferred to fresh towels for germination and growth of seedlings. The hypocotyl and primary root lengths of the seedlings were measured. Whereas these lengths ranged from 58·0 ± 6·2 to 68·8 ± 5·6 mm for contaminated seedlings (control 72·5 ± 5·9) at 5 days, hypocotyl and root lengths were 210·0 ± 12·5–225·0 ± 23·0 for contaminated seedlings (control 226·7 ± 21·3) by day 12. Then, percentage germination was 75·0 ± 3·0−84·4 ± 2·5 for toxin seeds control 85·6 ± 1·8). These results suggest that neither the percentage germination nor hypocotyl/ root lengths could be strongly correlated with AFT levels (from natural contamination) for the selected seeds.  相似文献

The time sequence of various developmental processes at the end of larval life in Drosophila virilis larvae is reported. If reared at 25·3°C the larvae leave their food about 140 hr after oviposition; 6·6 hr later ecdysone release occurs, while 8·5 to 9 hr after leaving food the mucoprotein, synthesized and stored in the salivary gland cells, is extruded into the lumen of the gland. Puparium formation takes place 11·2 hr after leaving food. Changes in the puffing activity are correlated with these processes.  相似文献

Diapause in a predaceous mite, Metaseiulus occidentalis, from a Californian vineyard population is a photoperiodically induced, facultative, adult reproductive diapause in females. The laboratory-determined critical photophase at 19°C was estimated at 11·2 hr. At 16°C, the critical photophase under laboratory conditions was approximately 11·6 hr. Temperature influenced the photoresponse of M. occidentalis so that diapause was entirely averted at temperatures of 22, 25, and 30°C. Aestival diapause at higher temperatures and long photophases was lacking. Development was continuous under constant darkness at all the temperatures tested. Diapause termination in laboratory-reared mites occurred spontaneously under the inductive conditions. Under constant 19°C temperatures, females responded to photophases so that diapause was terminated most rapidly under a 16 hr photophase (in 18·6 days); the 12 and 8 hr photophases, at this temperature, were next in their effectiveness, with 27·9 and 73·0 days, respectively, required for termination.  相似文献

A quantitative comparison of the incorporation of methyl-3H-thymidine and 6-3H-deoxyuridine into the DNA of Drosophila melanogaster in the presence and in the absence of 5-fluorouracil indicated that 5-fluorouracil inhibits the reaction converting dUMP to dTMP catalysed by thymidylate synthetase (methylenetetrahydrofolate:dUrd-5′-P C-methyltransferase, E.C. 2.1.1.b). The enzyme exhibits maximal activity at pH 7·5 to 8·0 and is protected from heat inactivation by deoxyuridine monophosphate. The addition of thiol compounds to the homogenization buffer results in the enhancement of synthetase activity. The Km values for deoxyuridine monophosphate and 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate are 6·8 × 10?6 M and 8·3 × 10?5 M, respectively. Fluorodeoxyuridine monophosphate, trifluoromethyldeoxyuridine monophosphate, and methotrexate are inhibitors of the enzyme. 5-Bromodeoxyuridine and 5-iododeoxyuridine have no inhibitory effect. The results support the contention that, under conditions which induce morphological lesions in Drosophila, fluorinated pyrimidines and methotrexate inhibit the de novo synthesis of thymidylate whereas thymidine analogues function in some other manner.  相似文献

Oxygen consumption by Dermatophagoides farinae was found to vary with temperature and water vapour activity. The relationship between temperature and O2 consumed/hr per mite was first order. Q10's were equal to exp (k 10°C) and were found to be 3·04 and 2·49 for 1 to 6 and 6 to 22 hr monitoring periods respectively. A significant difference between O2 consumed/hr per mite for 1 to 6 and 6 to 22 hr monitoring periods was found. Inactivity of mites explained 29·6 and 31·8 per cent of this reduction. Dehydrating conditions and reduced permeability of the water and gas exchange surface explained a further reduction to 58·7 and 60·8 per cent.  相似文献

Radioactive sucrose, supplied through the cut base to Pisum sativum epicotyls, was transported to the growing apex (plumule and hook) and used there for the synthesis mainly of uridine diphosphoglucose (UDP- glucose), fructose and cell wall glucan. Enzyme extracts of the apical tissue contained sucrose synthetase activity which was freely reversible, i.e. formed UDP-glucose and fructose from sucrose (pH optimum = 6·6 for the cleavage reaction, Km for sucrose = 63 mM). Particulate fractions of the same tissue contained a β-glucan synthetase which utilized UDP-glucose for formation of alkali-soluble and -insoluble products (pH optimum = 8·4, Km for UDP-glucose = 1·9 mM). Values for Vmax and yields of these two synthetase activities were sufficient to account for observed rates of cellulose deposition during epicotyl growth (15–25 μg/hr/epicotyl). When soluble pea enzyme was supplied with sucrose and UDP at pH 6·6 and then the preparation was supplemented with particles bearing β-glucan synthetase at pH 8·4, the glucose moiety of sucrose was converted to glucan in vitro. The results indicate that it is feasible for these synthetases to co-operate in vivo to generate β-glucan for expanding cell walls.  相似文献

A normal pregnancy in tsetse involves the successful integration of larval development with maternal activity. At 25°C, ovulation in Glossina morsitans occurs 1 hr after the previous larviposition, the egg hatches on day 3·8 (1·57 mm length, 0·09 mg dry wt.), ecdysis to second instar occurs on day 4·9 (2·3 mm, 0·30 mg), the third instar cuticle is formed on day 6·8 (4·5 mm, 5·0 mg), and parturition occurs on day 9·0 (6·0 mm, 10·0 mg). Melanization of the in utero third instar follows a regular sequence over a 2 day period. Parturition follows a circadian pattern with a peak 9 hr after lights on (12 hr daily photophase). All instars receive nutriment from the female's milk gland. During early pregnancy the rate of milk synthesis is greater than rate of uptake by the larva, thus causing expansion of the secretory reservoirs. After day 6, the volume of the secretory reservoirs decreases, but as is indicated by nuclear volume and larval growth the rate of synthesis remains high until day 8. Feeding activity of the adult female is maximal on day 1, levels off at 60 per cent up to day 6, and then declines sharply towards the end of pregnancy. Oöcyte development proceeds in phase with larval development and thus minimizes a lag period between successive pregnancies.  相似文献

A further quantitative analysis of the localization of the centromere on chromosomes was made using 16,817 individual chromosomes obtained from 723 mammalian species. Centromeric position was expressed quantitatively by the size of short arms as per cent weight (Sw) relative to the X-containing haploid set. When the class interval of Sw was 0·1 instead of the previous 0·2 (Imai, 1975), the frequency distribution of Sw showed an uneven (W-shaped) pattern with two distinct antimodes lying at Sw 0·6 (reconfirmation) and 0·1 (new finding). Two hypotheses, that are not mutually exclusive, are proposed to explain the non-random distribution of centromere position. One is that there are three structurally different short arms consisting of (1) centromere, (2) constitutive heterochromatin (as determined by C-banding), and (3) euchromatin, each arm-type being approximately characterized by the size of short arms (Sw) as Sw < 0·1, 0·1 ? Sw ? 0·6 and Sw > 0·6. The other possibility is concerned with an “orthogenetical” change of chromosome morphologies. When the chromosomes with Sw < 0·1, 0·1 ? Sw ? 0·6 and Sw > 0·6 are denoted as telocentric (T), acrocentric (A), and meta-, submeta- and subtelocentric (M, SM & ST), it was suggested that the chromosome morphologies tend to change orthogenetically (in a statistical sense) from T to M, SM & ST via A-chromosomes by rearrangements such as tandem growth of constitutive heterochromatic, pericentric inversions, and centric fusions.  相似文献

Ventilation was measured directly in the hagfish, Myxine glutinosa L., by means of an electro-magnetic blood flowmeter. Ventilatory flow and frequency increased from 0.86 ± 0.27 ml·min?, and 18.2 ± 5.1·min?, respectively, at 7°C to 1.70 ± 0.20 ml·min?, and 70.1 ± 9.5·min? at 15 ·C.Standard oxygen consumption,V?O2, was measured in non-buried hagfish. V?O2 was 0.57 ± 0.17μl O2·g?1·min?1 at 7°C, and 0.85 ± 0.12μl O2·g?1·min?1 at 15°C.  相似文献

An experimental study was carried out to compare the performance of selected anaerobic high rate reactors operated simultaneously at 37?°C. The three reactors, namely upflow anaerobic sludge bed reactor (UASB), hybrid of UASB reactor and anaerobic filter (anaerobic hybrid reactor – AHR) and anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR), were inoculated with the anaerobic digested sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plant and tested with synthetic wastewater. This wastewater contained sodium acetate and glucose with balanced nutrients and trace elements (COD 6000?mg?·?l?1). Organic loading rate (B v ) was increased gradually from an initial 0.5?kg?·?m?3?·?d?1 to 15?kg?·?m?3?·?d?1 in all the reactors. From the comparison of the reactors' performance, the lowest biomass wash-out resulted from ABR. In the UASB, significant biomass wash-out was observed at the B v 6?kg?·?m?3?·?d?1, and in the AHR at the B v 12?kg?·?m?3?·?d?1. The demand of sodium bicarbonate for pH maintenance in ABR was two times higher as for UASB and AHR. The efficiency of COD removal was comparable for all three reactors – 80–90%. A faster biomass granulation was observed in the ABR than in the other two reactors. This fact is explained by the kinetic selection of filamentous bacteria of the Methanotrix sp. under a high (over 1.5?g?·?l?1) acetate concentration.  相似文献

A procedure is described which unequivocally demonstrates the presence of adenosine 3′:5′-cyclic monophosphate in Phaseolus vulgaris. Its concentration was determined spectrophotometrically at 2·6–9·2 nmol g?1 of tissue (dry wt) for 6-day-old seedlings and about one-tenth of this in 13-day-old plants.  相似文献

The phosphonate hexasodium N,N,N′,N′-ethylenediamine-tetramethylenephosphonate (EDITEMP · Na6) reduced alkaline phosphatase (Alp) activity and cAMP response to parathyroid hormone (PTH) in primary cultures of foetal rat calvaria cells in a dose-dependent manner, while not affecting culture DNA content. EDITEMP · Na6 also inhibited the mineralization of three-dimensional bone nodules formed in vitro, but not the number of nodules formed. Bone cell culture DNA content was also reduced by EDITEMP · Na6 but at concentrations in excess of those needed to modulate osteoblastic cell function. Withdrawal of EDITEMP · Na6 led to slow but complete recovery of Alp activity. At EDITEMP · Na6 concentrations of 25 μM and higher, recovery of Alp activity appeared to be independent of protein and/or DNA synthesis. Cell culture acid phosphatase (Acp) activity was not affected by EDITEMP · Na6. The results indicate that EDITEMP · Na6 has a direct inhibitory effect on (mature) osteoblastic cell function. In the presence of bone tissue this inhibition also occurred, although not at a relatively low dose level.  相似文献

The fatty acid composition of Pieris brassicae was measured from larvae reared on four different diets. Pieris can alter the composition of fatty acids in the diet through selective incorporation and synthesis. Oleate is preferentially accumulated on artificial diets (15·9 per cent in diet, 43·8 per cent in neutral lipid (NL) of fifth instar larvae), but not equally on natural diets (18·1 per cent in Brassica napus, 25·6 per cent in the NL of fifth instar larvae). Incorporation of linolenate appears to depend on the concentration of both linolenate and linoleate in the diet. With dietary levels of 35·7% linolenate and 32·2% linoleate, fifth instar larvae contain 12·2 and 16·0 per cent, respectively, of these acids. With 45·8% linolenate and 12·5% linoleate in the diet, fifth instar larvae contain 44·1 and 11·6 per cent of these acids, respectively, in the NL. Palmitoleate is actively synthetized on the artificial diets; with trace amounts of dietary palmitoleate, fifth instar larvae have 9·3 per cent of this acid in the NL. Pieris regulates the uptake of linoleate from the diet at the intestinal wall as was shown by linoleic acid-1-14C, and is unable to convert dietary linoleate to any of the 18-carbon analogues. The female apparently accumulates linolenate into egg phospholipids on the artificial diet, but in general the fatty acid composition of the eggs resembles that of the fat body.  相似文献

Absorption, fluorescence and fluorescence excitation spectra were determined for equimolar mixed micellar detergent solutions of lutein and chlorophyll-a in the concentration range from 9·10?6 to 1.8·10?4 M, with detergent (triton-X100) concentrations from 3·-10?4 to 7·10?3 M. In the range of detergent concentrations studied the pigments incorporated into the detergent micelles attained a high local concentration (0.1 to 0.01 M), reminiscent of pigment concentration within the chloroplast. A lutein → chlorophyll-a energy transfer with an efficiency of about 15% was found in these systems. In dilute (9·10?6 M) pigment solution with concentrated (7·10?3 M) detergent practically no transfer is observed. The extent of aggregation and the efficiency of transfer depend on the composition of the system. The aggregation of chlorophyll-a is partly inhibited by lutein molecules. It is shown that the energy transfer efficiency as function of distance follows anr ?3 relationship,R 0 being 22 å.  相似文献

The effect of reduction in particle size on the anthelmintic efficacy of mebendazole (methyl 5 (6)- benzoyle 1–2 benzimidazole carbamate) was studied in rats undergoing a primary infection with N. brasiliensis. A single oral treatment with fine ground mebendazole (particle size spectrum—54·95 per cent of particles less than 10·62 μ dia.; 86·06 per cent less than 21·27 μ) removed more than 98 per cent of adult worms from the intestine at a dose rate of 12·5 mg/kg body wt. On the other hand the best result achieved with coarse ground mebendazole (18·47 per cent of particles less than 10·62 μ dia; 42·26 per cent less than 21·27 μ dia) was 58 per cent of adult worms removed at a dose rate of 100 mg/kg body wt. It was also shown that fine ground mebendazole adversely affected migrating third stage larvae of N. brasiliensis.  相似文献

Hierarchically organized colonies of five male Mus musculus of strain LACA/CFW were transferred to complex arenas of 1·3, 2·6, 3·8 or 5·2 m2. Mice in the 1·3 m2 areas subsequently had their living space increased by removal of a partition to 2·6, 3·8 or 5·2 m2. Changes in dominance occurred in eight out of thirteen of the colonies; the dominant mouse occupied the majority of the floor area, but some subordinates formed small territories. The number of territories held by subordinates was greater in the larger areas. In colonies in which the living area was expaded, however, there was no increase in the number of territories formed.  相似文献

The defensive secretion of the tenebrionid beetle, Eleodes beameri, is quite unlike the benzoquinone and 1-alkene secretion of other species of Eleodes and Tenebrionidae. Twenty-three compounds were isolated from the secretion by gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) and 13 of these were identified by infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance, ultraviolet, and mass spectroscopy. Identified compounds were: 1-nonene (3·2%), 1-undecene (<0·5%), n-hexanal (15·6%), n-heptanal (0·9%), n-octanal (4·5%), trans-2-hexenal (2·0%), trans-2-heptenal (1·5%), trans-2-nonenal (28·6%), trans-2-decenal (3·4%), n-3-nonanone (0·5%), n-1-nonen-3-one (16·8%), methyl-1,4-benzoquinone (22·0%), and 1-hexanol (<0·5%). 1-Nonen-3-one is unique to E. beameri. A number of minor components remain unidentified. The morphology and ultrastructure of the glands were similar to other species of Eleodes. The gland reservoirs are a pair of strongly bilobed sacs with narrow exit ducts opening between abdominal sternites 7 and 8. There are two types of secretory cell units: Type 1 consisting of cells closely attached to the reservoir intima, with large, central vesicles drained by highly convoluted tubules. Type 2 units are composed of a pair of cells functioning together, the cuticular organelle from the microvilli-filled vesicle of the distal cell (2a) passing through the vesicle of the proximal one (2b) and then draining more or less directly into the reservoir via a cuticular tubule.  相似文献

The net utilization of a meridic diet by Sitophilus oryzae from the newly hatched larva to the pupa was more efficient compared with that of S. granarius. The artificial diet was highly digestible to both species, but S. oryzae converted 24·1 per cent of the ingested food into body substance compared with 12·4 per cent converted by S. granarius. The mean pupal weight of S. granarius (1·402 mg) was greater than that of S. oryzae (1·012 mg); however, larvae of S. granarius consumed 2·6 times as much food and excreted 8·1 times as much faecal material to obtain that weight. Even though S. granarius consumed the diet at a greater rate, the relative growth rate of S. oryzae was faster. The intracellular symbiotes present in S. oryzae may have a rôle in the species' faster development and more efficient utilization of its food.  相似文献

The ability of mebendazole and fenbendazole to bind to tubulin in cytosolic fractions from 8-day Ascaris suum embryos was determined by inhibition studies with [3H]colchicine. Colchicine binding in the presence of 1·10?6 M mebendazole was completely inhibited during a 6 h incubation period at 37°C. Inhibition of colchicine binding to A. suum embryonic tubulin by mebendazole and fenbendazole appeared to be noncompetative. The inhibition constants of mebendazole and fenbendazole for A. suum embryonic tubulin were 1.9·10?8 M and 6.5·10?8 M, respectively. Mebendazole and fenbendazole appeared to be competitive inhibitors of colchicine binding to bovine brain tubulin. The inhibition constants of mebendazole and fenbendazole for bovine brain tubulin were 7.3·10?6 M and 1.7·10?5 M, respectively. These values are 250–400 times greater than the inhibition constants of fenbendazole and mebendazole for A. suum embryonic tubulin. Differential binding affinities between nematode tubulin and mammalian tubulin for benzimidazoles may explain the selective toxicity. The importance of tubulin as a receptor for anthelmintic benzimidazoles in animal parasitic nematodes is discussed.  相似文献
