Diel activity patterns in Metapenaeus and Penaeus juveniles   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Small (5–10.9 mm carapace length), medium (11–15.9 mm), and large (16–20.9 mm) juveniles of Metapenaeus anchistus, Metapenaeus sp., Penaeus monodon and P. merguiensis were stocked individually in glass tanks provided with sand substrate, sea water, artificial bamboo shelter, aeration and food. The seven activity types (recorded for each shrimp hourly for 24 h) were classified as below (burrowing) or above substrate (swimming, walking, stationary, in shelter, feeding and cleaning). Shrimp juveniles exhibited a strong diel periodicity — emergence and activity at night and burrowing in the day. The chi-square test showed that type of activity (above/below substrate) was associated with period (light/dark). Diurnal burrowing was greater among Metapenaeus than Penaeus; inversely, above substrate activities were more frequent for Penaeus species compared to Metapenaeus. Feeding was the major above substrate and nocturnal activity for M. anchistus, Metapenaeus sp. and P. monodon. Only P. Monodon used the shelter consistently. Frequency of the 7 activity types was dependent on juvenile size for Penaeus, e.g., the preference for shelters shifted to burrowing with increase in size in P. monodon. Results are discussed in relation to the importance of mangrove habitats in providing shelter to penaeids, in particular the mangrove-associated P. monodon and P. merguiensis.  相似文献

The horizontal and vertical distributions of two species of endemic, burrowing mud crabs Helice crassa Dana 1851 (Grapsidae) and Macrophthalmus hirtipes (Jacquinot 1853) (Ocypodidae) are described for the Avon-Heathcote Estuary (43°33′S: 172°44′E), Christchurch, New Zealand. Substratum preference is shown to be the most important factor influencing mud crab distribution, but lack of tolerance to salinities below 4‰ is also a significant factor preventing M. hirtipes from occurring at points close to freshwater input. Both species had similar sediment organic content and particle size requirements. Helice crassa was concentrated in well-drained, compacted sediments above mid-tide level, whilst Macrophthalmus hirtipeswas found in waterlogged areas below mid-tide level. This vertical separation is shown not to be caused by differential desiccation tolerances, but by feeding and burrowing adaptations related to these different substrata.  相似文献

Diel rhythms of oxygen uptake are described for P. brassicae and P. machaon. The rhythms are bimodal in both species at 10°C, with a main midday peak, a smaller peak in the afternoon or early evening and low nocturnal uptake rates under natural and artificial (LD 9:15) light regimes. In P. brassicae, the rhythm of oxygen uptake is linked with a diel rhythm of the incidence of short-term oxygen uptake cycles. Summated batch curves for both species contain significant elements of individual variation. In P. machaon, the timing of daily peaks in oxygen uptake is related directly to the level of metabolism.  相似文献

Lembos websteri Bate and Corophium bonnellii Milne Edwards are tubicolous. The morphology of tubes collected from Laminaria holdfasts is described and contrasted with that of tubes built amongst filamentous algae in a wave-sheltered environment. In both species tube length is a function of animal length. Corophium build tubes with openings raised above the substratum more commonly than Lembos, and will construct mats of tubes away from solid surfaces; Lembos tend to build against solid surfaces. Tube construction appears to depend upon the ‘knitting’ activity of the first two pairs of peraeopods, utilizing a secretion containing acid and sulphated mucopolysaccharides. The process of tube construction on substrata of known granulometry and the morphology of tubes built in the laboratory are described. The burrowing capabilities of both species are compared. On sand, Lembos tend to build on the sediment surface, whilst Corophium tend to burrow into the substratum. Corophium begin tube building after transference to a new situation much sooner than Lembos, with female Lembos starting to build sooner than male Lembos, Corophium can build a covering tube in < 15 min. In the absence of extraneous material, both species line glass tubes with a meshwork of mucoid filaments. In empty dishes, mucoid tubes are rarely built. The ability of Lembos to colonize wave-exposed sites may be related to its preference for more sheltered spaces within kelp holdfasts.  相似文献

Caging experiments were undertaken in the field to test if competition occurs within and between the limpet Cellana tramoserica (Sowerby) and the starfish Patiriella exigua (Lamarck). Both species suffer from intraspecific competition, even at natural densities, and increased density reduces body weight and survival in Cellana tramoserica and growth rate in Patiriella exigua. Cellana tramoserica depresses the growth of Patiriella exigua, while the starfish unexpectedly seems beneficial to Cellana tramoserica, increasing its body weight. The difference in these effects may be due to the divergent methods of feeding used by the two species. C. tramoserica digs into the substratum and removes most available microflora, while Patiriella exigua everts its stomach onto the rock face and can only remove superficial or loosely attached microflora and detritus, and leaves a mucous web which may supplement the diet of Cellana tramoserica. Even at low densities C. tramoserica can completely prevent macroalgae from developing, while Patiriella exigua is unable to do so, although it shows the rate of development. Macroalgae grew in all the cages which contained only P. exigua, but in spite of this the starfish still suffered from intraspecific competition, probably because they cannot feed on macroalgae. Cellana tramoserica also competes by interference, and on contact with Patiriella exigua it extends its mantle and pallial tentacles, both of which may release mucus. P. exigua retreats from Cellana tramoserica, and those parts of its body that have been touched by the limpet may temporarily be immobilised and become wrinkled up. It is suggested that this interference behaviour by C. tramoserica is derived from a similar but more intense reaction that it has to invertebrate predators. Patiriella exigua lacks a pelagic larva and does not have a refuge outside the range of Cellana tramoserica. Other factors must thus be sought to explain the continued coexistence of Patiriella exigua with Cellana tramoserica. It is suggested that although C. tramoserica has a competitive effect on Patiriella exigua, it (and other grazers) may be necessary for P. exigua, preventing macroalgal growth and maintaining a surface suitable for P. exigua to feed on.  相似文献

Callianassa kraussi Stebbing in southern Africa has been recorded in salinities down to 1‰ Experiments suggest that because of the burrowing activities of the prawns, the substratum is unlikely to provide insulation against transient low surface salinities. Investigation of osmotic and ionic regulation in this species has shown that hyper-osmoregulation occurs in salinities below $?20 ‰: hyper-osmoregulatory ability decreases in salinities below $?3.5 ‰ Previous work on the genus Callianassa suggested that there was no osmo-regulatory ability in this group and a possible reason for the development of this faculty in the southern African species is discussed.  相似文献

The settling behaviour and substratum preferences of the planulae of the Red Sea soft corals Xenia macrospiculata Gohar and Parerythropodium fulvum fulvum (Forskl) were examined in the laboratory. The planulae of the two species have a short pelagic phase and they tend to settle immediately upon leaving the parent colonies. Mucous secretion is used by the larvae for crawling and adhering to the substratum. They exhibit an aggregated pattern of settlement. The developing polyps are found in depressions or pits of the substratum. The planulae preferentially settle on rough substrata and avoid smooth surfaces. They search for substrata covered with an organic coating, composed of turf or crustose coralline algae. Such substrata create better conditions for larval settlement and metamorphosis. The planulae of P. f. fulvum exhibit a striking preference for upside-down attachment on undersides of the substrata, while Xenia macrospiculata utilizes both substratum faces for settlement. Light intensity seems insignificant in determining attachment sites. The findings of the experiments correspond well with the distributional patterns of juveniles of the two species as found in the natural environment. The specific requirements for settling of both species increase their chances of successful development and thus enhance their survival.  相似文献

In constant conditions and continuous darkness, the burrowing species Nebalia bipes (Fabricius) exhibits a clear circadian rhythm of emergence from the substratum and of swimming activity. The rhythm, in which activity occurs during the ‘expected night’, is obvious in both males and females and can remain overt for several weeks.The ‘free-running period’, although variable, is ≈ 24 h 20 min in a calm environment and at 18 °C. During the first day of the experiments, the swimming activity of freshly collected animals increases abruptly at dusk and then decreases gradually towards dawn. It has been possible to change the phase of the rhythm by subjecting the animals to a reversed LD schedule.The synchronization seems to result from the high photonegativity of Nebalia in normal daylight. The results of some experiments carried out with young juvenile animals suggests that the synchronization may possibly take place during the incubation period.  相似文献

The mechanism of burrowing in Nereis diversicolor O.F. Müller is described. Proboscis eversion in order to make a hole in the substratum is accompanied by a coelomic pressure pulse of 1.2–7.5 kPa, compared with a value of ≈0.3 kPa during ambulatory activity. Forward movement of the tail in the later stages of burial is by longitudinal contraction, usually accompanied by a pulse of about 2 kPa. The septa appear to act as effective hydrostatic pressure barriers during burrowing.In the flange-proboscis sequences of Arenicola marina (L.) the coelomic pressure in the trunk during erection of the flanges is generally slightly higher than that in the head, while the reverse applies during the low-volume proboscis eversion. Major progression of the anterior usually occurs during the first flange-proboscis sequence of each cycle and that of the posterior early in the dilation sequence. External pressure recordings of irrigation-defaecation cycles are given.Nereis uses a similar method of burrowing to that of the free-moving Nephtys but the coelomic pulses of the former are lower, as in the rate of burial (about 0.02 cm s?1) which is similar to that of Arenicola. Closure of the septa of Nereis during burial suggests that its burrowing mechanism is not as versatile as that of Nephtys.  相似文献

Behavioral adaptations to the severe nature and high faunal densities of hydrothermal vent habitats have received little attention from researchers. In this study, video and digital still imagery were analyzed to document the feeding and general behavior of the polychaete Paralvinella sulfincola at deep-sea vents on the Juan de Fuca ridge (North-East Pacific). This worm lives in mucous tubes on the actively growing portions of sulphide mineral chimneys and is considered to be the pioneering macrofaunal species in this habitat. We identified 6 recurrent behavior patterns, including antagonistic territoriality between neighboring conspecifics. The latter likely explains the regular spatial distribution of P. sulfincola populations on the substratum they colonize, and the observed confinement of feeding and exploration activities to a definable territory around the tube opening. Territory size, territorial overlap and density were significantly related to body weight, further supporting the importance of size and aggressive encounters in the maintenance of the worm's feeding area. During feeding, P. sulfincola uses its buccal tentacles to gather particles from the substratum using two different capture modes: seizing single macro-particles and aggregation of small particles.  相似文献

Activity patterns, feeding and burrowing behaviour of the economically important semi-terrestrial mangrove crab Ucides cordatus (Ucididae, L. 1763) was studied in a high intertidal Rhizophora mangle forest stand in Bragança, North Brazil. Video observations in the rainy and dry season were conducted over 24 h cycles at different lunar phases to investigate the behaviour of these litter-feeding crabs outside their burrows. During the rainy season, crabs stayed inside their burrows for 79% and 92% of the time during day and night, respectively. Time spent for feeding, burrowing and other activities outside their burrows was significantly longer during the day with 9.9% (night: 1.7%) and at waning and waxing moon with 9% (full and new moon: 0.9%). At neap tides (no tidal inundation) foraging and feeding activities outside burrows were clearly light-dependent, increasing at dawn and decreasing at dusk. Highest activities during daytime relate to the visual localisation of food. During the dry season, crabs spent less time inside burrows at neap tides than during the rainy season (80% and 91%, respectively). However, time spent for feeding activities was similar during both seasons. During almost all observation periods crabs collected leaf litter, but rarely fed on it outside burrows. At neap tides nearly all available litter was collected, suggesting that the U. cordatus population is litter-limited during these times. At spring tides (regular tidal inundation) the surface activity of U. cordatus was tide-dependent. Crabs closed their burrow entrances 2-3 h before flooding and re-emerged as soon as the tide retreated. During the day, burrow maintenance was the second most frequent behaviour after feeding. Agonistic interactions were regularly observed and were mainly related to burrow defence. The mean foraging radius of the crabs was only 19 cm (max: 1 m) underneath high Rhizophora mangle trees where crab densities were high. The results point to a high competition for burrows and show that U. cordatus is territorial. It is concluded that several exogenous factors, in particular light, leaf litter availability, flooding of burrows and the presence of conspecifics are important in controlling the crabs' activity patterns.  相似文献

During the larval development of the subantarctic king crab, Lithodes santolla, and stone crab, Paralomis granulosa, we compared changes in the carbon, fatty acid and protein contents of larvae reared under constant conditions from hatching to metamorphosis, either in presence or absence of food (Artemia spp. nauplii). In both species the feeding condition had no influence on any of the chemical parameters studied, indicating a fully lecithotrophic (i.e. non-feeding) mode of development from hatching of the first zoea to metamorphosis of the late megalopa. Dry mass and carbon contents at hatching were similar in the larvae of both species, but L. santolla contained initially higher total amounts of fatty acids and protein than P. granulosa. Both species utilized considerable portions of their total fatty acid pool which decreased logarithmically throughout the time of development. At metamorphosis, it was almost exhausted in P. granulosa, while L. santolla had consumed only about 60%. Protein utilization, in contrast, was higher in L. santolla (40%) than in P. granulosa (20%). Triacylglycerol was the principal storage lipid in both species, accounting initially for about 75% of the lipid fraction; it was strongly utilized during larval development. Phospholipid constituted the second largest lipid class; it also decreased in P. granulosa, but to a lesser extent in L. santolla. The major fatty acids of both species were 18:1(n−9), 20:5(n−3) and 16:0 as well as, in lower proportions, 18:1(n−7), 22:6(n−3), 16:1(n−7) and 18:0. Monounsaturated fatty acids represented the dominant group in L. santolla, whereas P. granulosa contained similar amounts of mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids. In L. santolla, monounsaturated fatty acids, especially 16:1(n−7), were preferentially utilized as compared to polyunsaturates. Due to a particularly strong lipid utilization in P. granulosa, all individual fatty acids were largely depleted at metamorphosis, showing similar extents of consumption. L. santolla had higher initial lipid and protein stores that seem to be used more economically as compared to P. granulosa.  相似文献

The feeding ecology of Axiothella rubrocincta (Johnson) from Tomales Bay, California, is described. This worm inhabits a U-shaped tube of agglutinated sand grains and mucus. Morphological adaptations such as nuchal and anal plaques prevent the tube from becoming clogged. Foreign debris entering the tube is either consumed or incorporated into the tube wall. The proboscis and notosetae are probably used to clean the tube wall. A. rubrocincta combines feeding and burrowing activities to form the funnel and complete the tube: it does not ingest sediment while burrowing. Organic matter deposited into the funnel is buried there by sand slides originating at the rim of the funnel. The concentration of organic matter within the funnel is significantly higher than for non-funnel sediments. A. rubrocincta consumes food from the upper 2 cm of the substratum and is 4.6% efficient as a depositfeeder. It also feeds within the funnel and can ingest large quantities of food. This feeding process is described. A. rubrocincta irrigates its tube at a rate of 5.1 ml sea water/g/h while feeding, and briefly reverses this current to a rate of 0.1 ml/g/h when defaecating. The rhythmic activity patterns are integrated: the mean defaecation and inverse pumping time is 14.4 min at 15 ± 1 C.  相似文献

Male crickets of the species Teleogryllus commodus express circadian rhythms in both their stridulatory and locomotory behaviours. Both forms of activity show the same free-running period (τ) in either DD (23·4 hr) or LL (25·1 hr). Although some overlap is seen between periods of locomotion and stridulation, the majority of each activity is found in different phases of the circadian cycle: locomotion occurs mainly in the subjective day and stridulation in the subjective night. Entraining LD cycles with photoperiods of 12 hr produce exogenous effects that can obscure endogenous components of the rhythms. Red light (λ>600 nm) causes the period to lengthen and RD cycles can entrain both rhythms. Single white light pulses of 2 or 6 hr did not produce significant phase shifts, but did cause τ to shorten when given in the subjective night. The significance of these observations is discussed. Given the results obtained to date, it is not likely that each rhythm is under the control of a separate circadian pacemaker.  相似文献

Lovenia elongata (Gray), the Indo-West Pacific spatangoid, was studied in the Gulf of Elat ('Aqaba) at the northern end of the Red Sea. The occurrence and local distribution of this macrobenthic burrowing species was determined and related to the particle size distribution of the substrata in which it was found. Its habitat preference is for clean, grassless, sandy bottoms in intertidal areas (beaches and sandbars), and on sublittoral level bottoms of protected bays and lagoons sheltered from heavy wave action. The preferred sediments were found to range from medium to fine sand. The population density, size frequency distribution, growth, reproduction, recruitment, and mortality of a sublittoral population of L. elongata (at Wadi Taba, Sinai) were studied.The mode of life of this burrowing heart urchin was observed in situ and in aquaria. Its burrowing and emergence behaviour are described. Experiments were carried out on the effect of particle size on burrowing behaviour. There are significant differences in the ability of L. elongata to manipulate substrata of varying grain size. The burrowing process was found to be most rapid in natural sand of medium-fine composition, corresponding to the normal sediment of the urchin's habitat. Such sediments were also found to be suitable for successful larval settlement; juveniles did not survive in coarser sand.Differences in population density and spatial distribution between various size groups are attributed to differences in their ability to manipulate the substratum. L. elongata is found to be morphologically suited to sand, particularly medium-fine sand; however, it is restricted by its morphology to shallow burrowing, since it lacks specialized mechanisms for deeper burrowing and funnel building.  相似文献

The influence of the food content and the particle size of the substratum on the distribution and relative abundance of Metapenaeus macleayi (Haswell) has been investigated by periodic trawl sampling for prawns and laboratory studies of their food, feeding, and burrowing behaviour.M. macleayi are opportunistic omnivores; they pick up material from the bottom with their chelipeds and convey it to the mouthparts where edible matter is sorted and ingested. They burrow into the sediment with their pereopods and pleopods, and are usually totally buried beneath the surface. A respiratory water current enters a tube formed by the antennal scales and the antennules, flows over the gills and then out of the carapace; this current is regularly reversed with increased strength, presumably to carry away de-oxygenated water. The results of experiments on substratum preference with adequately nourished juveniles suggest that the particle size of the sediment is more important than the food in the substratum in determining the distribution; the apparent preference of juveniles for a fine sandy substratum both in the laboratory and in the natural habitat may be attributed to the minimum threshold velocity of the sand particles.Adults are most abundant in turbid coastal waters arising from estuarine discharge and here the size of the sediment particles appears to be less important than the food content of the substratum in determining the distribution. The mangrove and reed swamps in the Hunter region play an important rôle in the food requirements of juvenile and adult prawns.  相似文献

Along the Mediterranean sandy shores, Eurydice affinis Hansen, Gastrosaccus mediterraneus Bacescu and Gastrosaccus spinifer (Goës) are present during the day in the sand of the beaches, either near the limit of the wave wash or in the superficial fringe of the infralittoral. In the evening there is a general emergence and the animals rejoin the planktonic populations of the open sea.All the three species when kept in aktographs under constant conditions and continuous darkness exhibit a circadian rhythm of emergence and swimming activity of nocturnal frequency. The rhythm is clear and in the two Gastrosaccinae persists for ten days at least; it has been observed over about fifty days in G. spinifer. In E. affinis, the rhythm is only on some occasions clear; one frequently observes a permanent burying in the sediment, in which case the swimming rhythm can be brought to light by a mechanical disturbance or the withdrawal of the sediment.A study of the changes in the photokinetic reactions in a horizontal beam of white light, with intensities varying from 4000 to 10?6 lux, allow the synchronization of the rhythms to be ascribed to a slight photonegative tendency of the animals at intensities > 1000 lux and a photopositive tendency, often marked, at lower intensities. The variations in the intensity of the reactions in the three species allows an explanation of the autonomous rhythms.A comparison between the photokinetic reactions of these species and those of the infralittoral Peracarida, which migrate in the nocturnal plankton, shows great differences with respect to light intensity. In the latter, the phototaxis is strongly negative and frequently accompanied by a strong photo-inhibition while in the former the phototaxis is still often positive and the kinesis is high. The photopositive reaction allows the animals to rejoin their daytime habitat soon after dawn when the swimming activity decreases.  相似文献

A study was carried out to investigate the daily rhythms of locomotor and feeding activity of Khajoo, Schizothorax pelzami, a candidate species for freshwater aquaculture. Using self-feeder juvenile Khajoo were exposed to a 12/12 LD cycle to determine the rhythms of locomotor and feeding activity. The effects of feeding on locomotor and feeding activity of fish were also examined. Finally, the endogenous rhythmicity under different lighting condition tested. Fish displayed a strictly diurnal feeding and locomotor activities with 98% and 84% of the total activity occurred in the photophase, respectively. In scheduled feeding, both the L-group (fed in light) and the D-group (fed in the dark) showed a diurnal locomotor activity pattern. However, the L-group had a peak of locomotor activity near the feeding time, but the D-group had a scarce locomotor activity in the scatophase with no significant change at the mealtime. Most of the individuals display free-running rhythms when exposed to different lighting condition including, constant darkness, ultradian 45:45 min LD cycle and reversed DL photo cycle. Taken together the results of this study showed that both locomotor and feeding activity have diurnal rhythms in Khajoo S. pelzami, even fish feeding had taken place at night. Additionally, the free-running locomotor activity of the fish in the absence of external light stimuli, suggests the existence of an endogenous timing mechanism in this fish species.  相似文献

The structure of the brachiolar arms and adhesive disk of the brachiolaria larvae of Stichaster australis (Verrill) and Coscinasterias calamaria (Gray) was determined from light microscopy and from scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The structure of these organs was very similar in both species.The brachiolar arms are comprised of a stem region terminating in a crown of adhesive papillae which are made up of a variety of secretory cell types. Principal among these are elongated cells producing very electron-dense secretory particles, which are released at the free cell surface attached to cilia. Secretory particles appear to be important in temporary attachment of the brachiolar arms to the substratum. Ciliary sense cells, possibly used in the recognition of specific substrata are located at the tip of adhesive papillae.The adhesive disk is comprised of large cells packed with secretory droplets and elongated intracellular fibres. In the attached adhesive disk, secretory droplets are lost, having formed the cement that attaches the disk to the substratum. It appears that adhesive papillae lateral to the adhesive disk hold the disk in position close to the substratum during secretion and hardening of the cement. The intracellular fibres are the principal anchoring structures running from microvilli (locked into the attachment cement) on the surface of the disk to the underlying connective tissue of the attachment stalk.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to determine whether locally abundant crab species prefer co-occurring littleneck clams, Protothaca staminea (Conrad, 1837) and Tapes philippinarum (A. Adams and Reeve, 1850), relative to a recently introduced species, the varnish clam, Nuttallia obscurata, (Reeve, 1857). Prey preference, handling time, pick-up success, profitability and consumption rates were investigated for two crab species, Dungeness crab, Cancer magister (Dana, 1852) and red rock crab, Cancer productus (Randall, 1839) crabs. Both crab species preferred varnish clams over the native species. This may be attributable to the lower handling time, higher pick-up success and increased profitability of consuming varnish clams. Handling time appeared to be a factor not only in species preference, but also in the degree of preference, with shorter handling times corresponding to stronger preference values. Both native and introduced bivalves burrow into the substratum, with the varnish clam burrowing deepest. When feeding on clams in limited substratum both crab species preferred the varnish clam. In the unlimited substratum trials Dungeness crabs preferred varnish clams (although to a lesser degree) while red rock crabs preferred littleneck clams. This was likely due to the significantly deeper burial of the varnish clam, making it less accessible. Although the morphology (i.e. thin shell, compressed shape) of the invader increases its vulnerability to predation, burial depth provides a predation refuge. These results demonstrate how interactions between native predators and the physical characteristics and behaviour of the invader can be instrumental in influencing the success of an invasive species.  相似文献
