The asidine darkling beetles (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae: Asidini) are a diverse tribe of flightless tenebrionids found in many arid and sub‐arid habitats around the world. The 263 currently described North American species are contained in ten genera, all of which are restricted to the western half of the continent. The Asidini, like all members of the subfamily Pimeliinae, lack defensive glands. Instead, several phenotypic traits occur within the tribe that may help limit predation. These include the contrasting defensive strategies of crypsis, through either background matching or pattern disruption, and Batesian mimicry of the chemically defended genus Eleodes. Dorsal elytral morphology was assessed between 53 North American asidine species and 13 common Eleodes model species using multiple methodologies to assess similarities between species in the two groups that might indicate mimetic relationships. A phylogeny of the North American asidines is used to map the occurrence of differing defensive strategies within the tribe. Crypsis is reconstructed as the ancestral state, with two origins for Batesian mimicry and multiple reversals. The combination of strongly to weakly cryptic species and varying levels of mimetic fidelity to Eleodes model species make the asidines a promising lineage upon which to further explore the evolution of defensive phenotypes.  相似文献

The quinone secretions of 6 Tribolium species were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively by gas chromatography. Procedures were developed for collecting and weighing the secretion which prevented its contamination and oxidation of the quinones. Secretions of all species contained 2-methyl- and 2-ethyl-1,4-benzoquinones in amounts ranging from 50.5% in T. brevicornis to 73% in T. confusum. Ratios of 2-methyl- to 2-ethyl-1,4-benzoquinone were 1:1.7 in 2 species and 1:2.6 to 1:2.7 in 4 species. The most prevalent non-quinone in secretions of all species was 1-pentadecene, varying from 15.6% in T. confusum to 19.9% in T. brevicornis. Three unidentified compounds, probably long-chain hydrocarbons, were found and designated biosolvents. BS-2 was present in secretions of all species, BS-1a in 4 species and traces of BS-1b in 2 species. The primary function of 1-pentadecene, and probably the unidentified biosolvents, is quinone solvency. This is discussed in relation to other previously proposed functions and to the recently discovered activity as a sex pheromone.  相似文献

The defensive secretion of the tenebrionid beetle, Eleodes beameri, is quite unlike the benzoquinone and 1-alkene secretion of other species of Eleodes and Tenebrionidae. Twenty-three compounds were isolated from the secretion by gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) and 13 of these were identified by infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance, ultraviolet, and mass spectroscopy. Identified compounds were: 1-nonene (3·2%), 1-undecene (<0·5%), n-hexanal (15·6%), n-heptanal (0·9%), n-octanal (4·5%), trans-2-hexenal (2·0%), trans-2-heptenal (1·5%), trans-2-nonenal (28·6%), trans-2-decenal (3·4%), n-3-nonanone (0·5%), n-1-nonen-3-one (16·8%), methyl-1,4-benzoquinone (22·0%), and 1-hexanol (<0·5%). 1-Nonen-3-one is unique to E. beameri. A number of minor components remain unidentified. The morphology and ultrastructure of the glands were similar to other species of Eleodes. The gland reservoirs are a pair of strongly bilobed sacs with narrow exit ducts opening between abdominal sternites 7 and 8. There are two types of secretory cell units: Type 1 consisting of cells closely attached to the reservoir intima, with large, central vesicles drained by highly convoluted tubules. Type 2 units are composed of a pair of cells functioning together, the cuticular organelle from the microvilli-filled vesicle of the distal cell (2a) passing through the vesicle of the proximal one (2b) and then draining more or less directly into the reservoir via a cuticular tubule.  相似文献

Secretions of an eversible gland on the metathorax of larvae of Chlaenius cordicollis Kirby (Coleoptera: Carabidae) are investigated by headspace analysis using solid phase microextraction followed by gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry (GC‐MS). Larvae from Manitoba, Canada and Pennsylvania, U.S.A., are sampled. Nine presumed defensive compounds are detected when the gland is everted, and this represents the first characterization of defensive secretions of larvae of a carabid beetle. With the exception of a single component (2‐methoxy‐4‐methylphenol), these compounds are distinct from those found in the defensive secretion of adult C. cordicollis. However, seven are more oxidized versions of the alkylphenolic compounds secreted by adult beetles: three hydroquinones (hydroquinone, methylhydroquinone and 2,3‐dimethylhydroquinone) and four quinones (p‐benzoquinone, toluquinone, 2,3‐dimethylquinone and ethyl‐p‐benzoquinone). An additional alkoxyphenol (2‐methoxy‐4‐ethylphenol) is also detected. Two patterns of composition are observed: in one, p‐benzoquinone and hydroquinone are undetectable and the ratio of toluquinone : 2,3‐dimethylquinone is 1 : 4.6 ± 0.6 (mean ± SE); in the other, all nine compounds are detectable and the ratio of toluquinone : 2,3‐dimethylquinone is 1 : 1.0 ± 0.2. These differences in pattern do not appear to be related to geographical source, sex or age of the larvae.  相似文献

The volatile components present in the mandibular glands of a number of species of the attine genera Cyphomyrmex (1 species), Trachymyrmex (3 species), and Acromyrmex (2 species) were investigated and compared with those present in Atta. The extracts were found to consist of mixtures of a number of compounds. All but one of these mixtures contained some or all of the following compounds: 3-octanone, 4-methyl-3-heptanone, 3-octanol, and 4-methyl-3-heptanol. The behavioural responses of Trachymyrmex and Cyphomyrmex workers to these compounds were tested. A common chemical heritage based on 3-ketones and 3-alcohols appeared to exist among the genera studied. The chemical data were compared with an accepted phylogeny of these genera to see whether it supported the phylogeny.  相似文献

The soldier defense secretions of advanced neotropical termites of the genus Subulitermes (Isoptera, Nasutitermitinae) contain diterpenes identicalto those found in Nasutitermes species, while soldiers of the primitive mandibulate nasute genera Cornitermes, Armitermes and Rhynchotermes lack diterpenoid compounds. It now appears improbable that the elongate nasus and intimately associated terpenoid defense secretions evolved from a primitive mandibulate ancestor independently along two phyletic branches. An alternate hypothesis is proposed in which morphological divergence from a common diterpene-producing ancestor may have occurred.  相似文献

Forty-six volatile compounds were identified in the secretions from Dufour's gland of worker ants of the species Formica nigricans, F. rufa, and F. polyctena using combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and capillary gas chromatography. In both methods the natural volatile material has been driven off excised glands using a precolumn technique. The composition of the secretions from the three species are very similar but there are also some distinct differences, especially between F. nigricans on the one hand and F. rufa and F. polyctena on the other. Straight-chain, saturated hydrocarbons are the quantitatively dominating compounds, with undecane as the largest individual component, followed by tridecane, pentadecane, and heptadecane. Straight-chain, monounsaturated hydrocarbons and methyl-branched, saturated hydrocarbons are also present and a few straight-chain, doubly unsaturated hydrocarbons are present in trace amounts. In the region of lower volatility two isoprenoids identified as all-trans-geranylgeraniol and the corresponding acetate all-trans-geranylgeranyl acetate, have been found together with octadecyl acetate. The relative amounts between these compounds are the main difference between the secretions from the three species. Octadecyl acetate is thus present only in trace amounts in the secretion of F. nigricans. In addition to the compounds mentioned a few aliphatic acetates and alcohols present in small amounts have been identified. The secretions are thought to have many functions which are reflected in their complex composition. This is discussed in comparison with results from other formicine ants. The species specificity in the composition of the secretion from Dufour's gland and the taxonomic value of this specificity are also discussed.  相似文献

Sullivantia species were found to produce quercetin 3-O-glycosides, several of which contain glucuronic acid, as well as pedalitin (6-hydroxy-7-O-methyl luteolin), pedalitin 6-O-glycosides, and small amounts of luteolin. Sullivantia has a unique combination of compounds that distinguishes it from other genera in the Saxifraginae for which flavonoid data are available. The nature of the flavonoid compounds is in accordance with a general trend within the Saxifragaceae of reduction and replacement of flavonols by flavones.  相似文献

The exocrine compounds produced by several species of Hypoclinea were analysed and compared to those identified in species in other genera of the ant subfamily Dolichoderinae. Two new natural products, 2-hydroxy-6-methylaceto-phenone and 2-acetoxy-6-methylacetophenone, were identified as anal gland products of three Hypoclinea species. The significance of two “forms” of H. bidens possessing completely different glandular secretions is discussed, and the relationship of the genera Hypoclinea and Dolichoderus is explored in terms of the exocrine chemistry of species in these two dolichoderine taxa.  相似文献

Knema andamanica is a red-listed endemic medicinal species of Myristicaceae restricted to Andaman and Nicobar (A&N) Islands, India. This species is used in tribal medicines and has immense bioprospective potential. With a view to generate suitable genomic markers for classification and identification, we have generated RAPD, SCAR and conserved 18S rDNA markers from K. andamanica. A unique 585 bp fragment, that distinguished it from seven other related species of Myristicaceae was first amplified using the random primer OPE 06 and converted to SCAR marker (GenBank accession # JN228256). The conserved sequences of 18S rDNA loci from K. andamanica were also amplified and sequenced (GenBank accession #JN228265). The sequence revealed deviations including 18 variable regions and 15 indels that were unique to K. andamanica. These markers can help in definite identification of K. andamanica even at the juvenile stages.  相似文献

Sterols and fatty acids were extracted and identified from three parasitic angiosperms, Cuscuta campestris, Monotropa uniflora and M. hypopitys. Each plant contained the typical 16 and 18-carbon fatty acids of angiosperms, but the partially-photosynthetic Cuscuta contained much larger quantities of linolenic acid than the non-green Monotropa species which had smaller amounts of linolenic acid characteristic of non-photosynthetic tissue. Sterol quantity was three times higher in Cuscuta than in the Monotropa species. Sitosterol was the major sterol in all species with smaller amounts of campesterol and cholesterol.  相似文献

Pericarp structure is investigated in 143 specimens belonging to 59 out of ca. 65 genera and 134 out of ca. 2,000 species of Lamiaceae subfamily Nepetoideae tribe Mentheae. Some of the data presented by earlier authors are believed to be incorrect. The variation in pericarp structure has been found to be strongly correlated to the variations in DNA and gross morphological characters. The groups of two-staminate genera (Salvia, etc.) and four-staminate genera of Salviinae (Lepechinia and Chaunostoma) can be distinguished from each other and from other labiates by differences in pericarp structure. The other two subtribes, Menthinae and Nepetinae, differ considerably, but their variations strongly overlap. The differences in pericarp structure also suggest that Menthinae can be divided into three main monophyletic groups based on other data: (1) the main bulk of the tribe, (2) a group of Prunella and Cleonia and perhaps also Horminum, and (3) the characteristic genus Lycopus. Pericarp data disagree with a suggestion that the genus Melissa should be included in the subtribe Salviinae. Modifications of the subtribal classification of Mentheae are discussed.  相似文献

Nineteen monoterpenes and 13 diterpenes were distinguished in soldier defensive secretions of four species of Nasutitermes. Samples of N. columbicus, N. corniger, N. ephratae and N. nigriceps were collected in Costa Rica and Panama. Interspecifically, these species can be differentiated by monoterpenes, which exhibit a complex pattern. Intraspecifically, there is detectable variation in monoterpenes and diterpenes, each of which allows discrimination of four populations of N. corniger. Similarity between two Pacific populations of N. corniger from different environments, a tropical dry forest and a rainforest, suggests there is no climatic influence on chemical compositions of defensive secretions. In addition, results from Costa Rica provide evidence that the Atlantic population of N. corniger is derived from Pacific populations.  相似文献

A halophilic, aerobic Gram-negative bacterium, designated strain CVS-6T, was isolated from a sea salt evaporation pond on the Island of Sal in the Cape Verde Archipelago. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed a clear affiliation of the organism with members of the family Idiomarinaceae. Sequence similarities between CVS-6T and the type strains of the species of the genera Pseudidiomarina and Idiomarina ranged from 93.7% to 96.9%. The major isoprenoid quinone was ubiquinone 8 (Q-8). The major cellular fatty acids were 15:0 iso (21.8%), 17:0 iso (12.5%), 17:1 iso ω9c (10.7%), and 16:1 ω7c (10.6%). The DNA G+C content was 51.6 mol%. The species represented by strain CVS-6T could be distinguished from the species of the genera Pseudidiomarina and Idiomarina; however, it was not possible to distinguish both genera from each other using the phenotypic or chemotaxonomic characteristics examined. Consequently, we propose that the species classified in the genus Pseudidiomarina should be transferred to the genus Idiomarina. We also propose that, on the basis of physiological and biochemical characteristics, strain CVS-6T (=LMG 23123=CIP 108836) represents a new species which we name Idiomarina insulisalsae.  相似文献

Thirty-eight moss species from four families of the order Dicranales were analysed for the fatty acid composition of their acyl lipids. In the Ditrichaceae and the Dicranaceae numerous species were found to contain acetylenic fatty acids in their triglycerides, 9,12,15-Octadecatrien-6-ynoic acid was the major component, often accounting for more than 80 mol%, whereas 9,12-octadecadien-6-ynoic acid was found in small amounts of less than 5 mol%. In some genera, all the species examined contained acetylenic fatty acids, e.g.Dicranella andDicranum, whereas in the genusCampylopus all five species tested were free of acetylenic compounds. Two genera, Ditrichum andDicranoweisia, were found to have a non-homogeous distribution of acetylenic fatty acids. The chemotaxonomic significance of the fatty acid composition in relation to morphological characters is discussed.  相似文献

Cantinoa althaeifolia, C. heterodon, C. mutabilis, C. stricta and C. sylvularum were investigated for the essential oil and exudate composition. The essential oils of these species, previously placed in the genus Hyptis, demonstrated the presence of at least 46 compounds, being β-pinene, δ-3-carene, β-caryophyllene, bicyclogermacrene, caryophyllene oxide and globulol the compounds present in higher amounts. Besides monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, three species presented diterpenes. Kaurenoic acid was isolated from C. heterodon exudate and detected by gas chromatography in C. stricta and C. mutabilis. Although kaurane diterpenes are widely found in nature, their occurrence in Lamiaceae seems to be restricted to few genera.  相似文献

Red soils, which are widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of southern China, are characterized by low organic carbon, high content of iron oxides, and acidity and, hence, are likely to be ideal habitats for acidophilic actinomycetes. However, the diversity and biosynthetic potential of actinomycetes in such habitats are underexplored. Here, a total of 600 actinomycete strains were isolated from red soils collected in Jiangxi Province in southeast China. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed a high diversity of the isolates, which were distributed into 26 genera, 10 families, and 7 orders within the class Actinobacteria; these taxa contained at least 49 phylotypes that are likely to represent new species within 15 genera. The isolates showed good physiological potentials for biosynthesis and biocontrol. Chemical screening of 107 semirandomly selected isolates spanning 20 genera revealed the presence of at least 193 secondary metabolites from 52 isolates, of which 125 compounds from 39 isolates of 12 genera were putatively novel. Macrolides, polyethers, diketopiperazines, and siderophores accounted for most of the known compounds. The structures of six novel compounds were elucidated, two of which had a unique skeleton and represented characteristic secondary metabolites of a putative novel Streptomyces phylotype. These results demonstrate that red soils are rich reservoirs for diverse culturable actinomycetes, notably members of the families Streptomycetaceae, Pseudonocardiaceae, and Streptosporangiaceae, with the capacity to synthesize novel bioactive compounds.  相似文献

In a survey of the higher plants for families with rosmarinic acid-accumulating species we could show for the first time, that some species of the family Marantaceae of the order Zingiberales accumulate rosmarinic acid. Other compounds detected in Marantaceae are chlorogenic acid and rutin (quercetin 3-O-rutinoside). Out of 35 species coming from 9 different genera extracted and analysed, two species of Maranta (Maranta leuconeura, Maranta depressa) and one Thalia species (Thalia geniculata) showed the presence of rosmarinic acid. The two Maranta species additionally contained chlorogenic acid, which was also present in Stromanthe amabilis. Rutin was detected in the genera Calathea, Ctenanthe, Maranta, Pleiostachya and Thalia. For a comparison, species from six other families of the Zingiberales were analysed as well.  相似文献

Floral volatiles play an important role in plant communication with both pollinators and antagonists, but remain poorly explored for many plant groups. Asclepiads (Apocynaceae: Asclepiadoideae subtribe Asclepiadinae) represent a diverse group in South African grasslands, but the scents of most species remain unexplored and few genera are sufficiently sampled to allow comparisons between congeners. I used dynamic headspace extraction methods and coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) to examine the scent chemistry of three unusually scented asclepiads in the genus Xysmalobium and then combined these data with previously published data to explore inter- and intraspecific variation in the genus. A total of 74 compounds (33–44 per species) from various compound classes were detected in the species examined here. The sweet but faintly foetid scent of Xysmalobium asperum was dominated by epoxy oxoisophorone in combination with various other terpenoids and aromatics, and small amounts of p-cresol. The sweat-like scent of Xysmalobium tysonianum was dominated by a few aromatics in combination with isovaleric acid and several aliphatic compounds normally associated with microbial degradation or fermentation. The semen-like scent of Xysmalobium parviflorum flowers examined here contained large relative amounts of 1-pyrroline, and comparison with previously published data for dung-scented flowers from a different population revealed clear divergence in the relative amounts of this compound and p-cresol. I also detected 25 compounds that were not shared between the two X. parviflorum populations. Comparison of scent data for eight Xysmalobium species revealed very distinct chemical profiles with limited overlap between species. These results are discussed in relation to the possible roles of these volatiles as pollinator attractants and the evolution of floral scents within the genus.  相似文献
