The potential importance of CO2 derived from host tree respiration at night as a substrate for night time CO2 uptake during CAM was investigated in the subtropical and tropical epiphytic vine Hoya carnosa in a subtropical rainforest in north-eastern Taiwan. Individuals were examined within the canopies of host trees in open, exposed situations, as well as in dense forests. Although night time CO2 concentrations were higher near the epiphytic vines at night, relative to those measured during the day, presumably the result of CO2 added to the canopy air by the host tree, no evidence for substantial use of this CO2 was found. In particular, stable carbon isotope ratios of H. carnosa were not substantially lower than those of many other CAM plants, as would be expected if host-respired CO2 were an important source of CO2 for these CAM epiphytes. Furthermore, laboratory measurements of diel CO2 exchange revealed a substantial contribution of daytime CO2 uptake in these vines, which should also result in lower carbon isotope values than those characteristic of a CAM plant lacking daytime CO2 uptake. Overall, we found that host-respired CO2 does not contribute substantially to the carbon budget of this epiphytic CAM plant. This finding does not support the hypothesis that CAM may have evolved in tropical epiphytes in response to diel changes in the CO2 concentrations within the host tree canopy.  相似文献

The carbon isotope ratios (δ13C values) of samples of Kalanchoë species collected in Africa were compared with previous data obtained with species from Madagascar. In contrast to the Malagasy species which cover the whole range of δ13C values from ?10 to ? 30%o, indicating high inter- and intraspecific diversity of CAM performance, in the African species nearly all δ13C values were less negative than ?18%0. Thus, in the African species the CAM behaviour is characterized by CO2 uptake proceeding mainly during the night. The distribution of δ13C values among the species clearly mirrors the taxonomic groups and the three sections of the genus Kalanchoë sensu lato. The Kitchingia section comprises only groups having CAM with a high proportion of carbon acquisition by the C3-pathway of photosynthesis. The same holds true for the first three groups of the Bryophyllum section, whereas in the following groups of the section CAM with CO2 proceeding mainly during the night is common. The latter CAM mode is typical also for the majority of groups and species in the section Eukalanchoë. The African Kalanchoë species belong to the Eukalanchoë section, whereas in Madagascar all three sections are abundant. The data support the view that the centre of adaptive radiation of the genus is located in Madagascar. They also suggest that high CAM variability is abundant in the more primitive taxa of the genus, whereas the phylogenetically more derived taxa show a stereotype CAM with CO2 uptake taking place only during the night.  相似文献

Photosynthesis of Crassula helmsii, an amphibious aquatic macrophyte weed species, has been measured with respect to pH and irradiance. C. helmsii shows a marked diel fluctuation in titratable acidity, which can be accounted for by changing levels of malic acid. C. helmsii is unable to use HCO inf3 sup- for photosynthesis and exhibits generally low photosynthetic rates when CO2 is not limiting. The photon flux density at which the onset of light saturation of photosynthesis is reached (E K ) is low for aquatic macrophytes. Some advantages conferred on C. helmsii by the possession of crassulacean acid metabolism are an extension of the period of assimilation of dissolved inorganic carbon, resulting in a reduction in the limitation imposed on photosynthesis in aquatic environments by a very high CO2 diffusion resistance.  相似文献

An Ameriflux site was established in mid 1996 to study the exchange of CO2 in a native tallgrass prairie of north‐central Oklahoma, USA. Approximately the first 20 months of measurements (using eddy covariance) are described here. This prairie, dominated by warm season C4 grasses, is typical of the central Kansas/northern Oklahoma region. During the first three weeks of the measurement period (mid‐July–early August 1996), moisture‐stress conditions prevailed. For the remainder of the period (until March 1998), however, soil moisture was nonlimiting. Mid‐day net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE), under well‐watered conditions, reached a maximum magnitude of 1.4 mg CO2 m?2 s?1 (flux toward the surface is positive) during peak growth (mid‐July 1997), with green leaf area index of 2.8. In contrast, under moisture‐stress conditions in the same growth stage in 1996, mid‐day NEE was reduced to near‐zero. Average night NEE ranged from near‐zero, during winter dormancy, to ? 0.50 mg CO2 m?2 s?1, during peak growth. Most of the variance in average night NEE was explained by changes in soil temperature (0.1 m depth) and green leaf area. The daytime NEE measurements were examined in terms of a rectangular hyperbolic relationship with incident photosynthetically active radiation. The analysis showed that the quantum yield during peak growth was similar to those measured in other prairies and the y‐intercept, so obtained, can be potentially used as an estimate of night‐time CO2 emissions when eddy covariance data are unavailable. Daily integrated NEE reached its peak magnitude of 30.8 g CO2 m?2 d?1 (8.4 g C m?2 d?1) in mid‐July when the green LAI was the largest (about 2.8). In general, the seasonal trend of daily NEE (on relatively clear days) followed that of green LAI. Annually integrated carbon exchange, between prescribed burns in 1997 and 1998, was 268 g C m?2 y?1. After incorporating carbon loss during the prescribed burn , the net annual carbon exchange in this prairie was near‐zero in 1998.  相似文献

We aimed to quantify the separate effects of photosynthetic and postphotosynthetic carbon isotope discrimination on δ13C of the fast‐turn‐over carbon pool (water soluble organic carbon and CO2 emitted from heterotrophic tissues), including their diel variation, along the pathway of carbon transport from the foliage to the base of the stem. For that purpose, we determined δ13C in total and water‐soluble organic matter of the foliage plus δ13C and δ18O in phloem organic matter of twigs and at three heights along the stem of Pinus sylvestris over a nine‐day period, including four measurements per day. These data were related to meteorological and photosynthesis parameters and to the δ13C of stem‐emitted CO2. In the canopy (foliage and twigs), the δ13C of soluble organic matter varied diurnally with amplitudes of up to 1.9‰. The greatest 13C enrichment was recorded during the night/early morning, indicating a strong influence of starch storage and remobilization on the carbon isotope signatures of sugars exported from the leaves. 13C enrichment of soluble organic matter from the leaves to the twig phloem and further on to the phloem of the stem was supposed to be a result of carbon isotope fractionation associated with metabolic processes in the source and sink tissues. CO2 emitted from the stem was enriched by 2.3–5.2‰ compared with phloem organic matter. When day‐to‐day variation was addressed, water‐soluble leaf δ13C and twig phloem δ18O were strongly influenced by ci/ca and stomatal conductance (Gs), respectively. These results show that both photosynthetic and postphotosynthetic carbon isotope fractionation influence δ13C of organic matter over time, and over the length of the basipetal transport pathway. Clearly, these influences on the δ13C of respired CO2 must be considered when using the latter for partitioning of ecosystem CO2 fluxes or when the assessment of δ13C in organic matter is applied to estimate environmental effects in ci/ca.  相似文献

In the leaves (but not corms) of the submerged aquatic plant Isoetes howellii, malic acid concentration fluctuates from 1–3 mg g–1 FW in the evening to 7–13 mg g–1 FW in the morning. Associated with this is a change in pH (a.m. pH 3–4 vs. p.m. pH 5–6) and titratable acidity (75–200 μ eq g–1 FW change in acidity between morning and evening) of the plant extract. 14CO2-fixation experiments indicate that carbon is fixed in both the light and the dark, though the amount of carbon fixed in the light is more than double that fixed in the dark. Autoradiographs show 89% of dark-fixed CO2 ends up in malic acid and the remainder in citric acid, whereas these two acids constitute less than 5% of the light-fixation products. It is suggested that CAM metabolism in this aquatic species may be related to the lower availability of CO2 for photosynthesis during the day than during the night in its aquatic environment.  相似文献

Abstract: On the basis of δ13C‐values, genotypic diversity and phenotypic plasticity of CAM behaviour in plants of the Malagasy vegetation is surveyed. The study compares CAM patterns performed in the wild on the levels of genera (Kalanchoë [Crassulaceae], Angraecum [Orchidaceae], Lissochilus [Orchidaceae] and Rhipsalis [Cactaceae]), on the level of a family (Didiereaceae) and finally on the level of a common growth form, namely in leafless orchids. For Rhipsalis, also non‐Malagasy species were included in the comparison. The genus Kalanchoë was found to be dominated by species representing the CAM‐physiotype with CO2 fixation taking place only during the night, whereas the CAM/C3‐ and the C3‐physiotypes (with limited intrinsic CAM potential) were less frequent. The opposite holds true for Angraecum. In the genus Rhipsalis, in the Didiereacean family and in the leafless orchids only the CAM‐physiotype is represented. The photosynthetic physiotypes of CAM plants were found to be related to the environmental conditions of the habitat. That is, strong CAM performers are typically abundant in the dry climatic zones or at otherwise dry niches, species of the C3‐physiotype (possibly with weak intrinsic capability of CAM performance) are distributed at humid sites and those of the CAM/C3‐physiotype occupy sites with medium and changing exposure to stress. Phenotypic plasticity of CAM, as indicated by the intraspecific variability of the δ13C‐values, was lower in the CAM‐physiotype compared with the CAM/C3‐physiotype. Our data support the view that strong stress leads to the dominance of highly adapted specialists among the CAM plants, with low phenotypic plasticity of the photosynthetic behaviour, whereas medium stress advances the unfolding of plastic CAM behaviour. Moreover, the data suggest that genera comprising all three physiotypes (Kalanchoë, Angraecum) are dispersed all over Madagascar, whilst groups comprising only strong CAM performers are restricted to limited areas or special types of habitats. This suggests that both genotypic diversity and phenotypic plasticity are important factors for the ecophysiological success of CAM.  相似文献

Is the maximum rate of carbon sequestration reported for the CAM‐C3 plant Portulacaria afra (spekboom), viz. 15.4 t CO2 ha?1 yr?1, unusual in comparison with other plants with similar physioliogies, or could such rates be expected routinely in restoration with P. afra? Private sector investors in thicket restoration need an answer to this question in order to assess the feasibility of using carbon finance as the main income stream from their investments. A literature review showed that 15.4 t CO2 ha?1 yr?1 is not an unusual rate of carbon sequestration for CAM plants in arid and semi‐arid environments, which suggests that investors in thicket restoration should not consider this an outlier value. The results also suggest that carbon finance could be used to fund restoration using other CAM plants in degraded xeric thickets in countries such as Argentina, Chile, Mexico, and Madagascar.  相似文献

Biomass‐derived black carbon (biochar) is considered to be an effective tool to mitigate global warming by long‐term C‐sequestration in soil and to influence C‐mineralization via priming effects. However, the underlying mechanism of biochar (BC) priming relative to conventional biowaste (BW) amendments remains uncertain. Here, we used a stable carbon isotope (δ13C) approach to estimate the possible biochar effects on native soil C‐mineralization compared with various BW additions and potential carbon sequestration. The results show that immediately after application, BC suppresses and then increases C‐mineralization, causing a loss of 0.14–7.17 mg‐CO2–C g?1‐C compared to the control (0.24–1.86 mg‐CO2–C g?1‐C) over 1–120 days. Negative priming was observed for BC compared to various BW amendments (?10.22 to ?23.56 mg‐CO2–C g?1‐soil‐C); however, it was trivially positive relative to that of the control (8.64 mg‐CO2–C g?1‐soil‐C). Furthermore, according to the residual carbon and δ13C signature of postexperimental soil carbon, BC‐C significantly increased (P < 0.05) the soil carbon stock by carbon sequestration in soil compared with various biowaste amendments. The results of cumulative CO2–C emissions, relative priming effects, and carbon storage indicate that BC reduces C‐mineralization, resulting in greater C‐sequestration compared with other BW amendments, and the magnitude of this effect initially increases and then decreases and stabilizes over time, possibly due to the presence of recalcitrant‐C (4.92 mg‐C g?1‐soil) in BC, the reduced microbial activity, and the sorption of labile organic carbon (OC) onto BC particles.  相似文献

Thus far, grassland ecosystem research has mainly been focused on low‐lying grassland areas, whereas research on high‐altitude grassland areas, especially on the carbon budget of remote areas like the Qinghai‐Tibetan plateau is insufficient. To address this issue, flux of CO2 were measured over an alpine shrubland ecosystem (37°36′N, 101°18′E; 325 above sea level [a. s. l.]) on the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau, China, for 2 years (2003 and 2004) with the eddy covariance method. The vegetation is dominated by formation Potentilla fruticosa L. The soil is Mol–Cryic Cambisols. To interpret the biotic and abiotic factors that modulate CO2 flux over the course of a year we decomposed net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE) into its constituent components, and ecosystem respiration (Reco). Results showed that seasonal trends of annual total biomass and NEE followed closely the change in leaf area index. Integrated NEE were ?58.5 and ?75.5 g C m?2, respectively, for the 2003 and 2004 years. Carbon uptake was mainly attributed from June, July, August, and September of the growing season. In July, NEE reached seasonal peaks of similar magnitude (4–5 g C m?2 day?1) each of the 2 years. Also, the integrated night‐time NEE reached comparable peak values (1.5–2 g C m?2 day?1) in the 2 years of study. Despite the large difference in time between carbon uptake and release (carbon uptake time < release time), the alpine shrubland was carbon sink. This is probably because the ecosystem respiration at our site was confined significantly by low temperature and small biomass and large day/night temperature difference and usually soil moisture was not limiting factor for carbon uptake. In general, Reco was an exponential function of soil temperature, but with season‐dependent values of Q10. The temperature‐dependent respiration model failed immediately after rain events, when large pulses of Reco were observed. Thus, for this alpine shrubland in Qinghai‐Tibetan plateau, the timing of rain events had more impact than the total amount of precipitation on ecosystem Reco and NEE.  相似文献

Carbon exchange of grazed pasture on a drained peat soil   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Land‐use changes have contributed to increased atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Conversion from natural peatlands to agricultural land has led to widespread subsidence of the peat surface caused by soil compaction and mineralization. To study the net ecosystem exchange of carbon (C) and the contribution of respiration to peat subsidence, eddy covariance measurements were made over pasture on a well‐developed, drained peat soil from 22 May 2002 to 21 May 2003. The depth to the water table fluctuated between 0.02 m in winter 2002 to 0.75 m during late summer and early autumn 2003. Peat soil moisture content varied between 0.6 and 0.7 m3 m?3 until the water table dropped below 0.5 m, when moisture content reached 0.38 m3 m?3. Neither depth to water table nor soil moisture was found to have an effect on the rate of night‐time respiration (ranging from 0.4–8.0 μmol CO2 m?2 s?1 in winter and summer, respectively). Most of the variance in night‐time respiration was explained by changes in the 0.1 m soil temperature (r2=0.93). The highest values for daytime net ecosystem exchange were measured in September 2002, with a maximum of ?17.2 μmol CO2 m?2 s?1. Grazing events and soil moisture deficiencies during a short period in summer reduced net CO2 exchange. To establish an annual C balance for this ecosystem, non‐linear regression was used to model missing data. Annually integrated (CO2) C exchange for this peat–pasture ecosystem was 45±500 kg C ha?1 yr?1. After including other C exchanges (methane emissions from cows and production of milk), the net annual C loss was 1061±500 kg C ha?1 yr?1.  相似文献

Studies have suggested that more carbon is fixed due to a large increase in photosynthesis in plant–soil systems exposed to elevated CO2 than could subsequently be found in plant biomass and soils –‐ the locally missing carbon phenomenon. To further understand this phenomenon, an experiment was carried out using EcoCELLs which are open‐flow, mass‐balance systems at the mesocosm scale. Naturally occurring 13C tracers were also used to separately measure plant‐derived carbon and soil‐derived carbon. The experiment included two EcoCELLs, one under ambient atmospheric CO2 and the other under elevated CO2 (ambient plus 350 μL L? 1). By matching carbon fluxes with carbon pools, the issue of locally missing carbon was investigated. Flux‐based net primary production (NPPf) was similar to pool‐based primary production (NPPp) under ambient CO2, and the discrepancy between the two carbon budgets (12 g C m? 2, or 4% of NPPf) was less than measurement errors. Therefore, virtually all carbon entering the system under ambient CO2 was accounted for at the end of the experiment. Under elevated CO2, however, the amount of NPPf was much higher than NPPp, resulting in missing carbon of approximately 80 g C m? 2 or 19% of NPPf which was much higher than measurement errors. This was additional to the 96% increase in rhizosphere respiration and the 50% increase in root growth, two important components of locally missing carbon. The mystery of locally missing carbon under elevated CO2 remains to be further investigated. Volatile organic carbon, carbon loss due to root washing, and measurement errors are discussed as some of the potential contributing factors.  相似文献

Tropical peatlands play an important role in the global carbon cycling but little is known about factors regulating carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) fluxes from these ecosystems. Here, we test the hypotheses that (i) CO2 and CH4 are produced mainly from surface peat and (ii) that the contribution of subsurface peat to net C emissions is governed by substrate availability. To achieve this, in situ and ex situ CO2 and CH4 fluxes were determined throughout the peat profiles under three vegetation types along a nutrient gradient in a tropical ombrotrophic peatland in Panama. The peat was also characterized with respect to its organic composition using 13C solid state cross‐polarization magic‐angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Deep peat contributed substantially to CO2 effluxes both with respect to actual in situ and potential ex situ fluxes. CH4 was produced throughout the peat profile with distinct subsurface peaks, but net emission was limited by oxidation in the surface layers. CO2 and CH4 production were strongly substrate‐limited and a large proportion of the variance in their production (30% and 63%, respectively) was related to the quantity of carbohydrates in the peat. Furthermore, CO2 and CH4 production differed between vegetation types, suggesting that the quality of plant‐derived carbon inputs is an important driver of trace gas production throughout the peat profile. We conclude that the production of both CO2 and CH4 from subsurface peat is a substantial component of the net efflux of these gases, but that gas production through the peat profile is regulated in part by the degree of decomposition of the peat.  相似文献

1. Temperature and many other physical and chemical factors affecting CO2 production in lake sediments vary significantly both seasonally and spatially. The effects of temperature and sediment properties on benthic CO2 production were studied in in situ and in vitro experiments in the boreal oligotrophic Lake Pääjärvi, southern Finland. 2. In in situ experiments, temperature of the water overlying the shallow littoral sediment varied seasonally between 0.5 and 15.7 °C, but in deep water (≥20 m) the range was only 1.1–6.6 °C. The same exponential model (r2 = 0.70) described the temperature dependence at 1.2, 10 and 20 m depths. At 2.5 and 5 m depths, however, the slopes of the two regression models (r2 = 0.94) were identical but the intercept values were different. Sediment properties (wet, dry, mineral and organic mass) varied seasonally and with depth, but they did not explain a significantly larger proportion of variation in the CO2 output rate than temperature. 3. In in vitro experiments, there was a clear and uniform exponential dependence of CO2 production on temperature, with a 2.7‐fold increase per 10 °C temperature rise. The temperature response (slope of regression) was always the same, but the basic value of CO2 production (intercept) varied, indicating that other factors also contributed to the benthic CO2 output rate. 4. The annual CO2 production of the sediment in Lake Pääjärvi averaged 62 g CO2 m?2, the shallow littoral at 0–3 m depth releasing 114 g CO2 m?2 and deep profundal (>15 m) 30 g CO2 m?2. On the whole lake basis, the shallow littoral at 0–3 m depth accounted for 53% and the sediment area in contact with the summer epilimnion (down to a depth c. 10 m) 75% of the estimated total annual CO2 output of the lake sediment, respectively. Of the annual production, 83% was released during the spring and summer. 5. Using the temperature‐CO2 production equations and climate change scenarios we estimated that climatic warming might increase littoral benthic CO2 production in summer by nearly 30% from the period 1961–90 to the period 2071–2100.  相似文献

Abstract The regulation of crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) under controlled environmental conditions has been investigated for two tropical epiphytes, relating plant water and carbon balance to growth form and habitat preference under natural conditions. Aechmea fendleri is restricted to wet, upper montane regions of Trinidad, while A. nudicaulis has a wider distribution extending into more arid regions of the island. Morphological characteristics of these plants are related to habitat preference in terms of leaf succulence (0.44 and 0.94 kg m?2 for the two species respectively) and a distinct layer of water storage parenchyma in A. nudicaulis In contrast, the thinner leaves of A. fendleri contain little water-storage parenchyma and less chlorenchyma per unit area, but the plants have a more open leaf rosette. The two species differ in expression of CAM, since the proportion of respiratory CO2 recycled as part of CAM had been found to be much lower in A. fendleri This study compared the efficiency of water use and role of respiratory CO2 recycling under two PAR regimes (300 and 120 μnol m?2 s?1) and three night temperatures (12, 18 and 25 °C). Dark CO2 uptake rates for both species were comparable to plants in the field (maximum of 2.3 ± 0.2 μmol m?2s?1± SD, n= 3). Total net CO2 uptake at night increased on leaf area basis with temperature for both species under higher PAR, although under the low PAR regime CO2 uptake was maximal at 18 °C. Water-use efficiency (WUE) increased at 18 °C and 25 °C during dark CO2 uptake (Phase I) and also during late afternoon photosynthesis (Phase IV) in both species. For A. fendleri, dawn to dusk changes in titrable acidity (ΔH +) were similar under high and low PAR, although ΔH+ was correlated to night temperature and PAR in A. nudicaulis. The proportion of ΔH+ derived from respiratory CO2 also varied with experimental conditions. Thus percentage recycling was lower in A. fendleri under high PAR (0–10%), but was only reduced at 18 °C under low PAR. Recycling by A. nudicaulis ranged from 32–42% under high PAR, but was also reduced to 6% under low PAR at 18 °C; at 12 °C and 25 °C, recycling was 37% and 52% respectively. Previous studies have suggested a relationship between the proportion of recycling and degree of water stress. This study indicated that CAM as a CO2 concentrating mechanism regulates both water-use efficiency and plant carbon balance in these epiphytes, in response to PAR and night temperature. However, the precise relationship between respiratory processes and the balance between external and internal sources of CO2 is as yet unresolved.  相似文献

Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM), an advanced photosynthetic pathway conferring water conservation to plants in arid habitats, has enigmatically been reported in some species restricted to extremely wet tropical forests. Of these, epiphytic Bromeliaceae may possess absorbent foliar trichomes that hinder gas‐exchange when wetted, imposing further limitations on carbon dioxide (CO2) uptake. The hypothesis that the metabolic plasticity inherent to CAM confers an ecological advantage over conventional C3 plants, when constant rainfall and mist might inhibit gas‐exchange was investigated. Gas‐exchange, fluorometry and organic acid and mineral nutrient contents were compared for the bromeliads Aechmea dactylina (CAM) and Werauhia capitata (C3) in situ at the Cerro Jefe cloud forest, Panama (annual rainfall > 4 m). Daily carbon gain and photosynthetic nutrient use efficiencies were consistently higher for A. dactylina, due to a greater CO2 uptake period, recycling of CO2 from respiration and a dynamic response of CO2 uptake to wetting of leaf surfaces. During the dry season CAM also had water conserving and photoprotective roles. A paucity of CAM species at Cerro Jefe suggests a recent radiation of this photosynthetic pathway into the wet cloud forest, with CAM extending diversity in form and function for epiphytes.  相似文献

The high-arctic environment is an environment where the consequences of global warming may be significant. In this paper we report on findings on carbon dioxide and water vapour fluxes above a sedge-dominated fen at Zackenberg (74°28′N, 20°34′ W) in The National Park of North and East Greenland. Eddy covariance measurements were initiated at the start of the growing season and terminated shortly before its end lasting 45 days. The net CO2 flux during daytime reaches a high of 10 μmol m–2s–1, and around the summer solstice, net CO2 assimilation occurred at midnight, resulting in net carbon gain during the night. The measured carbon dioxide fluxes compare well to estimates based on the photosynthesis model by Collatz et al. (1991 ). The total growing-season net ecosystem CO2 exchange was estimated to be 96 g C m–2 based on the carbon dioxide model and micrometeorological data. Finally, the combined CO2 assimilation and soil respiration models are used for examining the dependence of the carbon dioxide budget on temperature. The ecosystem is found to function optimally given the present temperature conditions whereas either an increase or a decrease in temperature would reduce the ecosystem CO2 accumulation. An increase in temperature by 5 °C would turn the ecosystem into a carbon dioxide source.  相似文献

Abstract A method is described in which 1 year-old chestnut coppice was fed in situ with air highly enriched in 13CO2 (23%). After 3 days, 13C concentration increases in shoots were measured by mass spectrometry. Respiratory losses between 13C feeding and harvest were estimated using two different methods: (i) a model involving the temperature response of respiration and (ii) direct measurement of 13C content of the CO2 respired by the shoots during the night. Carbon allocation to roots was deduced by subtracting from the given amount of 13C, the amount remaining in shoots and the 13C respired by the shoots. The method was tested twice during the growing season. Very little carbon was allocated to roots in late July, but over 80% of assimilated 13C went to roots at the end of September. Despite some approximations in the 13C respiratory losses estimations, the method allowed evaluation of carbon allocation to roots with an error of about 5%.  相似文献

Species in the Miscanthus genus have been proposed as biofuel crops that have potential to mitigate elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels and nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) emissions. Miscanthus sinensis is widespread throughout Japan and has been used for biomass production for centuries. We assessed the carbon (C) budget and N2O and CH4 emissions over the growing season for 2 years in a M. sinensis‐dominated grassland that was naturally established around 1972 in Tomakomai, Hokkaido, Japan, which is near the northern limit for M. sinensis grassland establishment on Andisols. Average C budget was ?0.31 Mg C ha?1, which indicates C was released from the grassland ecosystem to the atmosphere. Dominant components in the C budget appeared to be aboveground net primary production of plants (1.94–2.80 Mg C ha?1) and heterotrophic respiration (2.27–3.11 Mg C ha?1). The measurement of belowground net primary production (BNPP) of plants in the M. sinensis grassland was extremely variable, thus only an approximate value could be calculated. Mean C budget calculated with the approximated BNPP value was 1.47 and ?0.23 Mg C ha?1 for 2008 and 2009, respectively. Given belowground biomass (9.46–9.86 Mg C ha?1) was 3.1–6.5 times higher than that of aboveground biomass may provide additional evidence suggesting this grassland represents a C sink. Average CH4 emissions across years of ?1.34 kg C ha?1 would indicate this grassland acts as an atmospheric CH4 sink. Furthermore, average N2O emissions across years were 0.22 kg N ha?1. While the site may contribute N2O to the atmosphere, this value is lower compared with other grassland types. Global warming potential calculated with the approximated BNPP value was ?5.40 and 0.95 Mg CO2 Eq ha?1 for 2008 and 2009, respectively, and indicates this grassland could contribute to mitigation of global warming.  相似文献
