The effects of algal mats on wintering wading bird distribution and behaviour were studied at two sites during 1998/99 to identify changes that occurred during the winter breakdown of the algal mat. Numbers of Black-tailed Godwit Limosa limosa did not increase as the algal mat reduced in extent but a significantly greater number of birds were observed in areas without algal cover than in areas with mats in most months. The use of clear spaces, created between the algal patches as the mat broke down, by Black-tailed Godwit increased across the winter. We suggest that algal mats may physically interfere with the deep probing action of this wader. In contrast, when algal mats were most dense in November 1998, significantly greater numbers of Redshank Tringa totanus were observed in algal areas at one site. Redshank appeared not to be deterred by algal cover and, at times, preferentially utilized the algal infauna as prey.  相似文献

Summary The flocculation of Chlorella vulgaris by Lactobacillus casei was studied to determine whether the latter could act as a suitable flocculant for the removal of Chlorella from algal ponds. The flocculating activity of the Lactobacilli was caused by the bacterial cells themselves, and not by diffusible products of bacterial metabolism. Diffusible products of algal metabolism inhibited flocculation. For algae resuspended in water, the best flocculation occurred at pH values less than 3.5 where the charges on the bacterial and algal cells were opposite. For flocculation at least one bacterium was required for every algal cell; in terms of cell concentrations,10 mg/l of bacteria were required to flocculate an algal suspension of 1,000 mg/l. The mechanism of flocculation implied by the results is that positively charged cells of L. casei adsorb to the surface of negatively charged cells of C. vulgaris neutralizing the charge and thus destabilizing the algal suspension. Because of the low pH required and because diffusible products of algal metabolism inhibit the flocculation, it is unlikely that L. casei could be usefully employed as a flocculant of Chlorella from algal ponds.  相似文献

Temporal changes of biomass and dominant species in benthic algal communities were investigated in a littoral sand-beach zone in the north basin of Lake Biwa from December 1999 to September 2000. Chlorophyll-a amounts of benthic algal communities per unit area of the sandy sediments rapidly increased from late April to June. Increases in biomass of the benthic algal communities are considered to result from the propagation of filamentous green algae Oedogonium sp. and Spirogyra sp. The cell numbers of filamentous green algae and chlorophyll-a amounts of benthic algal communities at depths of 30 and 50cm at a station protected by a breakwater in May were significantly higher than those of a station exposed directly to wave activity. Thus, the biomass accumulation of the benthic algal communities seems to be regulated strongly by wave disturbance. The development of filamentous green algae may contribute to the increase in biomass of the benthic algal community and to the changes in seasonal patterns of biomass in the sand-beach zone of Lake Biwa. We consider that the development of the filamentous green algal community in the littoral zone of Lake Biwa is the result of eutrophication.  相似文献

The photosynthetic activity of different algal communities at the outer edge of an Equisetum fluviatile L. stand in an oligotrophic lake (Pääjärvi, in southern Finland) was investigated. Production by the algal communities was measured simultaneously using a modified 14C-method, and the results were related to the volume of algae and the available irradiance. The relative production rate (P/B quotient) of phytoplankton was ca. 3 × that of epiphyton and ca. 20 × that of epipelon. Epiphyton productivity remained almost constant although the algal volume varied greatly, suggesting that the surface layer of the algal community was mainly responsible for the photosynthetic activity. In the littoral area (at 1 m depth) primary production/m2 of lake surface by phytoplankton, epiphyton and epipelon was similar but in the littoriprofundal area (2–4 m) phytoplankton production was twice that of epipelon. Primary productivity of epiphyton and epipelon/m2 of substratum was about equal to phytoplankton productivity/m3 of water at the same irradiance. This relation provided a means of estimating the relative contributions of the different algal communities to the total algal production in the lake.  相似文献

Suspended clay reduces Daphnia feeding rate   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
SUMMARY. 1. Suspended sediments often reduce cladoceran abundance in the field, and reduce the algal feeding rates of cladocerans in the laboratory. This paper explores the behavioural mechanisms by which suspended clay reduces Daphnia feeding rates. Feeding experiments using radiolabelled Cryptomonas cells showed that 50–200 mg 1-?1 coarse suspended clay (particle size<2 μm) reduced the algal ingestion rate of Daphnia ambigua by 29–87%, but fine suspended clay (<1 μm) had no effect. Suspended clay decreased feeding rate by 60–70% at low algal concentrations (≤5×103 cells ml?1), but by only 27% at high algal concentrations (20×103 cells ml?1). Thus, the inhibitory effects of suspended clay are greater at low algal concentrations. The sudden addition (or removal) of suspended clay caused immediate reductions (or increases) in algal ingestion rate. 2. Observations of the feeding behaviour of tethered D.pulex showed that the frequency of postabdominal rejections increased greatly in the presence of suspended clay. The rejected boluses contained both algae and clay. Thoracic feeding appendage beat frequency decreased in the presence of suspended clay, decreasing the volume of water searched for food particles. 3. These behavioural responses indicate that clay reduces cladoceran feeding rate by mechanically interfering with both the collection and ingestion of algal cells. Both inhibitory effects are caused because cladocerans collect and ingest suspended clay particles. The behavioural mechanisms by which cladocerans regulate their feeding rate in very high concentrations of algal cells (rejection of excess food and reduction in thoracic limb pumping movements) are the same mechanisms responsible for the inhibition of algal ingestion rate in the presence of high concentrations of suspended clay particles.  相似文献

Summary A model, based on energy-flow considerations, is presented which describes the population dynamics of Brachionus rubens in the second stage of a two-stage algalrotifer chemostat. The rotifers are foodlimited with substrate-inhibition occurring at high algal densities. The model shows two stable states: steady state with constant density of rotifers and washout of the animals. Which one of the stable states is reached depends on the initial conditions.Empirical data are in general agreement with the model. Deviations may be explained by the fact that the data underlying the model calculations are based on a different food alga (Chlorella vulgaris) than the one used in the experiments (Monoraphidium minutum). The observed population growth rate reaches a maximum value of 0.84 (1/day) at algal densities of 3–4. 106 cells/ml. It decreases at higher algal densities. The egg ratio is related linearily to algal density without being reduced at high algal densities. This study is dedicated to the memory of Prof. Dr. Udo Halbach  相似文献

The influence of the initial composition of an algal-bacterial microcosm constituted of Chlorella sorokiniana and Ralstonia basilensis was tested for the fed-batch degradation of salicylate at 5 mM. Salicylate degradation was always limited by the O2 generation rate, which was initially proportional to the algal density, but rapidly became limited by the availability of light once the algae started to grow. The decrease of the salicylate removal rate observed at high algal densities was likely caused by mutual shading within the algal population and the increase of O2 consumption due to algal dark respiration. With repeated salicylate amendments, all systems converged towards the same characteristics, reaching an optimum rate of salicylate degradation at 1 mmol l–1 day.  相似文献

Nutrients, algae and grazers in some British streams of contrasting pH   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. The relationship between algal biomass accumulation, invertebrate colonization, and stream-water pH was investigated in seven streams in three regions of England and Wales. Possible nutrient limitation of algal production at all sites was examined with diffusion substrata. 2. Periphyton assemblages on experimental substrata after 30 days were dominated by diatoms, notably Eunotia spp., at all sites. Algal pigment concentration (chlorophyll a and phaeopigments) was not correlated with stream-water pH, and mean concentrations on control (unenriched) substrata ranged from 0.08 to 1.94 μg cm?2. 3. The growth response of periphyton to nutrient additions was site specific. Algal production was stimulated by nutrient additions at sites in the English Lake District and Llyn Brianne (south-west Wales), but not in the Ashdown Forest (southern England). 4. Larval Chironomidae were the main invertebrates retrieved from substrata at all sites. Within all three regions, larval abundance was positively related to algal pigment concentration (biomass). Abundance of the stonefly Nemurella pictetii was also positively correlated with algal biomass at the one site where it occurred. 5. Our results indicate that epilithic algal production in small, oligotrophic streams is unlikely to be determined primarily by pH. Neither do they support the view that an absence of grazers from acid streams is necessarily due to an inadequate food supply.  相似文献

We used field and mesocosm experiments to measure effects of southern redbelly dace (Phoxinus erythrogaster), a grazing minnow, on stream ecosystem structure and function. Ecosystem structure was quantified as algal filament length, algal biomass, size distribution of particulate organic matter (POM), algal assemblage structure, and invertebrate assemblage structure, whereas ecosystem function was based on gross and net primary productivity. Our experiments showed that moderate densities of Phoxinus temporarily reduced mean algal filament length and mean size of POM relative to fishless controls. However, there was no detectable effect on algal biomass or ecosystem primary productivity. Several factors could explain the lack of effect of Phoxinus on primary productivity including increased algal production efficiency in grazed treatments or increased grazing by other organisms in fishless treatments. The inability of Phoxinus to reduce algal biomass and system productivity contrasts with experimental results based on other grazing minnows, such as the central stoneroller (Campostoma anomalum), and questions the generality of grazer effects in stream ecosystems. However, environmental venue and the spatial and temporal scale of ecosystem measurements can greatly influence the outcome of these experiments. Electronic supplementary material Supplementary material is available in the online version of this article at and is accessible for authorized users. The experiments described herein comply with the current laws of the country in which the experiments were performed.  相似文献

Concurrent with the spread of green algal mats on tidal flats, reports of macrofauna dieoffs under dense algal mats have increased in numbers. Bivalves seem to be particularly affected by persistent dense algal mats. Bivalve species with a long extendible siphon seem to be less affected underneath algal mats, but no distinction has been made in the past between species with short and those with long siphons,Mya arenaria andMacoma balthica, on an intertidal mudflat in New England. Abundances ofM. arenaria declined substantially during the study period when a thick green algal mat covered the mudflat for several months. Numbers of the small bivalveGemma gemma also decreased substantially, whereas abundances ofM. balthica showed minimal variation during the time of algal coverage. In algae removal/addition experiments numbers ofM. arenaria decreased, but effects were only significant in an algal addition to previously algal-free mudflat areas. Abundance ofM. balthica did not change significantly in the algal removal/additition experiments. Over the time period of the experiment (9 weeks),M. arenaria showed measurable size increase in uncovered mudflat areas, but not underneath algal mats. Similarly,M. balthica only increased in size in the uncovered mudflat area. From these results it is concluded thatM. balthica can survive time periods of dense algal coverage because it is able to penetrate through the algal mat with its long extendible siphon, and thus can reach well-oxygenated water layers above the mat.M. arenaria with its thick, less extendible, siphon cannot push through dense algal mats and therefore is more likely to die underneath persistent algal mats.  相似文献

The physical properties of substrata significantly influence benthic algal development. We explored the relationships among substratum surface texture and orientation with epilithic microphytobenthic biomass accumulation at the whole‐substratum and micrometer scales. Unglazed clay tiles set at three orientations (horizontal, vertical, and 45°), and six substrata of varying surface roughness were deployed in a prairie stream for 3 weeks. Substrata were analyzed for loosely attached, adnate, and total benthic algal biomass as chl a, and confocal laser scanning microscopy was used to measure substrata microtopography (i.e., roughness, microscale slope angles, and three‐dimensional surface area). At the whole‐substratum level, vertical substrata collected significantly (P < 0.05) less algal biomass, averaging 34% and 36% less than horizontal and 45° substrata, respectively. Benthic algal biomass was also significantly less on smoother surfaces; glass averaged 29% less biomass than stream rocks. At the microscale level, benthic algal biomass was the greatest at intermediate values, peaking at a mean roughness of approximately 17 μm, a mean microscale slope of 50°, and a projected/areal surface area ratio of 2:1. The proportion of adnate algae increased with surface roughness (26% and 67% for glass and brick, respectively), suggesting that substratum type changes the efficiency of algal removal by brushing. Individual substrata and microsubstrata characteristics can have a strong effect on benthic algae development and potentially affect reach scale algal variability as mediated by geomorphology.  相似文献

Massive growth of sub-ice algal assemblages was recorded at two stations under first-year ice off northeast Greenland using a Remotely Operated Vehicle equipped with cameras. The assemblages mainly consisted of the diatom Melosira arctica (Ehr.) Dickie. A station sampled at the beginning of June 1993 revealed two forms of growth, curtain-like and rope-like, but with many intermediate types along the entire 150 m transect. The algal distribution was patchy. No significant sympagic fauna was found close to the algal masses. At a station sampled in the middle of July, similar algal concentrations seemed to be disturbed by ice-melting processes. Two casts under multi-year ice flows failed to show any algal aggregations. The observation of algal assemblages under first-year ice is in contrast to earlier reports from the Barents Sea where they have been recorded exclusively under multi-year ice.  相似文献

Coral mortality and interaction with algae in relation to sedimentation   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The impact of sedimentation on coral–algal interactions was studied by monitoring tissue mortality and radial growth in two coral species, Colpophyllia natans and Siderastrea siderea, over a continuum of sediment input intensities. This study sets out to investigate (1) whether sedimentation can facilitate algal overgrowth of corals and (2) whether this was a significant cause of coral mortality. Over a 15-month period, 198 coral colonies were tagged and photographed at six sites along two replicate gradients of sediment input, spanning high inputs near river mouths to low inputs at exposed headlands. Photographs were taken so that they covered the interface between colonies and algae. Radial growth was measured along colony edges in contact with algae and unaffected by tissue loss from causes other than competition with algae. To establish whether algal overgrowth was a significant cause of coral mortality, tissue mortality on the colony surface area visible in the photographs was related to different causes, including sediment smothering, disease, and algal overgrowth. Radial growth became negative with increasing proximity to river mouths in C. natans and remained negative or close to zero throughout the gradients in S. siderea, overall suggesting that sedimentation can facilitate algal overgrowth on corals. However, the analysis of tissue mortality revealed that algal overgrowth was a relatively minor cause of tissue loss. In contrast, the most important cause of coral mortality in relation to sedimentation was from sediment smothering, probably during intense episodes of deposition associated with heavy rainfall. We conclude that sedimentation may lead to reef degradation by causing coral mortality through sediment smothering and burial, and then by suppressing the regrowth of surviving adult colonies through increased competition with algae.  相似文献

SUMMARY. The algal flora of the Rivers Hayle and Gannel. whieh drain copper and lead mining regions of Cornwall, are described and compared. Although fluctuations in the rarer members of the algal communities were observed, the dominant filamentous algae at most sites did not change over the year of study. Both the total algal abundance and the number of species were depressed at high metal sites. Associations of species that were evident in field samples were confirmed and correlated with water metal levels by principal component analysis. The close similarity between the flora of similar sites on the copper-polluted River Hayle and the lead-polluted River Gannei implies that the degree of metal pollution, rather than the polluting metal per se, determines the species present. All mine sites were characterized by a Microspora -community whereas a Zygnemales community of Spirogyra and Mougeotia species was typical of low metal pollution. Moderately polluted sites downsteam of the mines had an intermediate flora of Zygnemaies, Microsporales. Ulotrichales and gelatinous Volvocales and Tetrasporales species. No species could be said to invariably indicate metal pollution; the most abundant species at highly contaminated sites were also those with the widest distributions. Field samples of filamentous algae (mainly Spirogyra, Zygogonium, Mougeotia and Microspora species) contained metal concentrations several orders of magnitude greater than ambient levels. For copper and iron, both algal metal contents and concentration ratios (μg g-1 algae/μg ml-1 water) were positive functions of water metal levels, although algal iron appeared to plateau at water concentrations of about 1 mg ml-1. Algal lead concentrations, but not the concentration ratios, also were positively correlated with water lead levels. Thus, for these three metals, the algal metal contents were indicative of ambient conditions. In contrast, algal zinc concentrations were nearly constant and consequently the concentration ratios for this metal were inversely related to water levels. This result suggests that unlike the uptake of other metals, uptake of zinc by these aigae may be strictly regulated.  相似文献

The territorial damselfish, Stegastes nigricans, maintains algal farms by excluding invading herbivores and weeding unpalatable algae from its territories. In Okinawa, Japan, S. nigricans farms are exclusively dominated by Polysiphonia sp., a highly digestible filamentous rhodophyte. This study was aimed at determining the diet of S. nigricans in Okinawa and its dependency on these almost-monoculture algal farms based on stomach content and chemical analyses. Stomach content analyses revealed that all available food items in the algal farms (i.e., algae, benthic animal inhabitants, trapped detritus) were contained in fish stomachs, but amorphous organic matter accounted for 68% of the contents. Therefore, carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios and fatty acid (FA) compositions were analyzed to trace items actually assimilated in their bodies. Stable isotope analyses showed that benthic animals were an important food source even for this farmer fish. Two essential fatty acids (EFAs), 20:4n6 and 20:5n3, which are produced only by rhodophytes among available food items, were rich in the muscle tissue of S. nigricans as well as in algal mats and detritus, suggesting that algal mats contribute EFAs to S. nigricans directly and indirectly through the food web. In conclusion, S. nigricans ingested algal mats, detritus, and benthic animals maintained within its farm. Algae and detritus were original sources of EFAs, and benthic animals, which were much more abundant in the farms than in outside territories, provided a nitrogen-rich dietary source for the fish.  相似文献

Summary The blue tilapia, Tilapia aurea, consumes the green alga, Ankistrodesmus falcatus, with some algal cells passing through the gut in viable condition. Grazing fish grew and the grazed algal populations had enhanced densities compared to ungrazed populations. Algal growth enhancement was not produced by either bacteria or fish excreting an algal limiting nutrient. Possible ingestion and digestion of bacterial cells by the fish might release nutrients to the algal cells that were otherwise unavailable. Blue tilapia may be affecting algal communities in ways other than by passive size selection. Enhancement of algal growth by the blue tilapia could have important implications for understanding the phytoplankton dynamics in waters containing blue tilapia.  相似文献

Changes in a hydropsychid guild downstream from a eutrophic impoundment   总被引:7,自引:6,他引:1
The production of unicellular algae is laborious and is a major constraint for the culturing of aquatic filter-feeders. Because of their small particle size and their high protein content yeasts are considered as a promising substitute for micro-algae. Furthermore, recent work has shown that baker's yeast can be converted into a digestible diet for Artemia by chemical treatment. The present study documents the use at laboratory scale of this manipulated yeast as an algal substitute for the culture of two anostracan species. The experiments were conducted with the brine shrimp artemia franciscana and the fairy shrimp Streptocephalus proboscideus. A similar experimental set-up was used for both species. The algal diet, consisting of Dunaliella tertiolecta for A. franciscana and Selenastrum capricornutum for S. proboscideus, was substituted at various levels by two types of treated baker's yeast: a fresh form and a dried product which was rich in highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA). The chemically-treated yeast offers promising possibilities as an algal substitute for Artemia; i.e. replacing 75% of the algae by the dried yeast resulted in similar survival and even higher growth rates in comparison with the reference algal diet; for the treated fresh yeast similar results could be achieved by up to 95% substitution. For S. proboscideus, a substitution of 75% by either of the yeast products resulted in good survival, though growth did not exceed 80% of the observed growth in the algal control. A diet consisting solely of yeast resulted in poor survival for larvae of both species. Experiments were run to investigate whether this was due to a sub-optimal feeding regime, nutritional deficiencies, or deterioration of the water quality.  相似文献

An algal ridge system discovered along the Exuma Cays, Bahamas constructs bioherms to a thickness of at least 1.5 m and is associated with modern intertidal stromatolites. These algal ridges are unique because they grow in atypical environments characterized by relatively low wave energy, high rates of sedimentation and low rates of herbivory. They also are composed primarily of the branching crustose coralline alga, Neogoniolithon strictum, which heretofore was not known to form algal ridges. Lateral growth rates of crusts, vertical growth rates of branches and survivorship of transplanted N. strictum were greatest in the shallow fore reef zone of the algal ridge. The alga is also capable of surviving and growing when covered with sediment for at least 100 days. Under such conditions it transforms from a branched to an unbranched morphology. Parrotfish grazing, which is said to limit the abundance of branched corallines and algal ridges, was two orders of magnitude lower than in published accounts from other reef systems of the Caribbean and one order of magnitude less than that found on nearby coral reefs of the west Exuma Sound. Neogoniolithon strictum, a delicate and open-branched coralline, persisted for over a year without grazing damage when transplanted to a depth of 2.3 m. This algal ridge-building coralline becomes a well-indurated limestone following submarine lithification of sediment that infills the open branch framework. As a result, N. strictum ridges are comparable to the dense frameworks associated with most algal ridges. Observations of N. strictum -associated bioherms along Central America suggest this ridge system may exist elsewhere under conditions similar to those described for the Bahamas. Summary Rates of algal production were measured at 6 rocky intertidal sites on the southwestern Cape coast, South Africa, where populations of the limpet Patella granularis occur. Rates of algal production and limpet mortality were recorded at each site and both factors affected limpet reproductive fitness. Limpet growth rates and biomass at different sites were significantly correlated with rates of algal production, and limpet mortality was related to the density of African Black Oystercatchers, important predators of P. granularis. Life-time gametic output of a hypothetical cohort of limpets at each site was modelled using the measurements of growth, reproduction and mortality made at each site. Limpet cohorts at sites with rapid rates of algal production were predicted to have a larger life-time production of gametic material than cohorts at sites with slow algal production rates, except in instances of acute predatory pressure. In the light of the overriding influence of food supply on the expression of limpet life-history parameters, it is imperative that researchers consider food availability before assuming that local, population-specific differences in life-history patterns are due to genetic differences.  相似文献

The effect of grazing minnows (Campostoma) on spatial and temporal heterogeneity of the vertical height of attached filamentous algae (Spirogyra and Rhizoclonium) was measured in natural and artificial streams. Measurements were made at 1-m intervals across natural-stream pools during April–May, and at 0.3-m intervals longitudinally in smaller artificial streams during February–May. Spatial heterogeneity was calculated weekly, as the mean standardized difference in algal height (spatial MDH) between adjacent fixed points. Temporal MDH was calculated as the mean standardized difference in algal height at fixed points between adjacent weeks. Reduction in spatial and temporal MDH, detected only in artificial streams, suggested that grazing by Campostoma promoted and maintained more uniform algal height in contrast to ungrazed algae. Heterogeneity of algal export was greater for ungrazed algae, and decreased over time after sloughing, but that for grazed algae was lower and increased after sloughing. The contrasting experimental systems suggested that Campostoma can reduce spatial and temporal heterogeneity of algae, but that additional variation in depth, substratum characteristics, or presence of other biota may modify effects in natural streams.
